we_o may_v know_v more_o of_o god_n especial_o of_o his_o love_n and_o of_o his_o mercy_n to_o his_o people_n in_o his_o son_n than_o they_o do_v or_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o to_o what_o end_n be_v the_o pain_n that_o christ_n have_v take_v to_o manifest_v his_o father_n name_n to_o we_o oh_o let_v we_o be_v ashamed_a to_o come_v behind_o the_o saint_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o name_n who_o come_v behind_o we_o in_o the_o mean_n of_o this_o knowledge_n be_v it_o so_o that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v make_v a_o absolute_a etc._n etc._n then_o let_v we_o satisfy_v use_v 4_o ourselves_o with_o the_o discovery_n he_o have_v make_v and_o let_v we_o not_o attempt_v or_o undertake_v to_o know_v more_o of_o the_o father_n than_o he_o have_v make_v know_v to_o we_o indeed_o if_o jesus_n christ_n have_v fall_v short_a in_o this_o discovery_n it_o be_v but_o reason_n that_o we_o shall_v exceed_v and_o go_v beyond_o it_o if_o he_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o all_o that_o be_v fit_a for_o we_o to_o know_v it_o be_v a_o congruous_a thing_n that_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o know_v more_o but_o see_v the_o discovery_n he_o have_v make_v be_v so_o complete_a and_o absolute_a in_o all_o respect_n so_o that_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o add_v to_o it_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o rest_v in_o it_o and_o to_o content_v ourselves_o with_o so_o much_o knowledge_n of_o the_o father_n as_o he_o have_v reveal_v to_o we_o indeed_o there_o be_v a_o itch_n in_o nature_n to_o search_v into_o those_o thing_n especial_o concern_v god_n which_o be_v conceal_v and_o hide_v from_o we_o fain_o we_o will_v see_v his_o face_n when_o christ_n have_v manifest_v but_o his_o backpart_n to_o we_o we_o will_v know_v more_o of_o his_o nature_n of_o his_o counsel_n and_o decree_n the_o order_n of_o they_o the_o measure_n of_o they_o the_o object_n of_o they_o than_o he_o have_v think_v expedient_a to_o reveal_v to_o we_o we_o will_v approach_v too_o nigh_o to_o gaze_v we_o will_v intrude_v on_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o have_v not_o see_v for_o which_o we_o have_v no_o revelation_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v col._n 2.18_o and_o this_o my_o brethren_n be_v reveal_v in_o the_o word_n but_o to_o clear_v those_o to_o we_o if_o any_o spirit_n bring_v we_o any_o thing_n cross_v with_o or_o but_o so_o much_o as_o diverse_a from_o the_o scripture_n if_o a_o angel_n drop_v from_o heaven_n teach_v we_o any_o other_o doctrine_n he_o must_v not_o be_v believe_v but_o accurse_v to_o the_o law_n and_o to_o the_o testimony_n say_v the_o prophet_n isa_n 8.20_o if_o any_o man_n or_o angel_n speak_v not_o according_a to_o this_o word_n let_v he_o pretend_v what_o light_n he_o will_v it_o be_v because_o there_o be_v no_o light_n in_o he_o and_o therefore_o day_n as_o long_o as_o man_n make_v no_o account_n and_o reckon_n of_o the_o word_n as_o long_o as_o they_o profess_v it_o only_o but_o be_v not_o very_o zealous_a for_o it_o nor_o very_o careful_a to_o walk_v in_o every_o thing_n exact_o by_o it_o they_o may_v live_v pretty_a quiet_a with_o their_o neighbour_n but_o if_o they_o come_v once_o to_o contend_v and_o that_o with_o earnestness_n for_o every_o truth_n that_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o word_n if_o they_o will_v not_o in_o any_o case_n by_o any_o mean_n depart_v in_o any_o thing_n from_o that_o rule_n the_o world_n will_v be_v about_o their_o ear_n upon_o a_o sudden_a and_o show_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o malignity_n and_o rage_n against_o they_o but_o why_o shall_v this_o exasperate_v the_o world_n against_o they_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o i_o can_v tell_v you_o why_o it_o shall_v but_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o why_o it_o do_v for_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o cross_v the_o world_n and_o they_o condemn_v and_o shame_v the_o world_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o set_v the_o world_n so_o much_o against_o they_o by_o this_o mean_n they_o cross_v the_o world_n and_o this_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o endure_v it_o make_v their_o very_a heart_n to_o rise_v against_o they_o and_o they_o cross_v they_o three_o way_n they_o cross_v they_o in_o their_o judgement_n and_o they_o cross_v they_o in_o their_o will_n and_o they_o cross_v they_o in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n 1._o first_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o cross_v they_o in_o their_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n till_o man_n receive_v the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o can_v in_o every_o thing_n conform_v their_o judgement_n and_o opinion_n to_o the_o world_n they_o can_v think_v as_o they_o do_v and_o they_o can_v speak_v as_o they_o do_v they_o can_v agree_v and_o hold_v with_o they_o in_o every_o point_n and_o so_o they_o walk_v on_o lovingly_z together_o there_o grow_v no_o difference_n or_o debate_n between_o they_o but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o entertain_v the_o word_n to_o be_v their_o rule_n in_o every_o thing_n both_o in_o opinion_n and_o in_o conversation_n now_o they_o be_v force_v to_o differ_v from_o the_o world_n to_o clash_v with_o they_o in_o many_o thing_n to_o contradict_v and_o oppose_v they_o and_o gainsay_v they_o and_o this_o breed_v disaffection_n and_o dislike_n yea_o enmity_n and_o hatred_n against_o they_o nay_o they_o be_v force_v sometime_o if_o they_o will_v keep_v exact_o to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o cross_v the_o world_n in_o those_o opinion_n which_o they_o be_v most_o intent_n upon_o and_o for_o which_o they_o be_v most_o eager_a and_o this_o they_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n bear_v from_o they_o as_o they_o that_o entertain_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o saviour_n of_o the_o world_n when_o he_o be_v conversant_a upon_o the_o earth_n and_o in_o the_o time_n that_o follow_v next_o after_o his_o incarnation_n passion_n and_o ascension_n they_o do_v exceed_o enrage_v the_o world_n against_o they_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n will_v not_o endure_v to_o heat_n of_o christ_n or_o the_o religion_n that_o embrace_v and_o worship_v he_o and_o therefore_o whosoever_o undertake_v to_o own_v he_o and_o profess_v he_o be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o all_o the_o violence_n and_o rage_n and_o malice_n that_o the_o world_n can_v pour_v upon_o he_o he_o may_v have_v cross_v the_o world_n in_o many_o other_o truth_n and_o not_o have_v find_v so_o ill_a measure_n but_o this_o draw_v out_o their_o rage_n and_o malice_n to_o the_o utmost_a and_o this_o be_v that_o as_o i_o conceive_v which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n aim_v particular_o at_o in_o my_o text_n i_o have_v give_v they_o thy_o word_n thy_o gospel_n word_n of_o that_o he_o speak_v and_o they_o have_v entertain_v it_o and_o embrace_v it_o and_o therefore_o the_o world_n hate_v they_o and_o if_o you_o look_v into_o the_o story_n of_o the_o church_n you_o shall_v observe_v that_o whosoever_o close_v with_o the_o gospel_n in_o those_o early_a time_n and_o profess_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n from_o which_o the_o world_n be_v so_o exceed_o averse_a he_o be_v expose_v thereby_o to_o all_o the_o misery_n that_o humane_a cruelty_n etc._n etc._n can_v devise_v to_o inflict_v but_o after_o when_o this_o gospel-truth_n come_v to_o be_v better_o settle_v and_o digest_v in_o the_o world_n about_o his_o ear_n and_o so_o in_o every_o age_n there_o be_v some_o passage_n of_o holy_a scripture_n and_o the_o truth_n deliver_v in_o they_o against_o which_o the_o world_n be_v violent_o bend_v and_o whosoever_o stick_v to_o these_o the_o world_n hate_v he_o out_o of_o measure_n and_o do_v he_o all_o the_o mischief_n that_o it_o can_v and_o therefore_o this_o be_v call_v the_o word_n of_o god_n patience_n apoc._n 3.10_o thou_o have_v keep_v the_o word_n of_o my_o patience_n that_o be_v thou_o have_v not_o only_o keep_v my_o word_n in_o general_n but_o more_o particular_o thou_o have_v keep_v those_o portion_n of_o my_o word_n and_o those_o parcel_n of_o my_o truth_n which_o must_v have_v patience_n to_o the_o keep_n of_o they_o a_o man_n may_v keep_v some_o truth_n deliver_v in_o the_o word_n without_o patience_n as_o be_v universal_o receive_v by_o all_o oppose_v by_o none_o but_o there_o be_v other_o which_o if_o a_o man_n maintain_v and_o hold_v they_o he_o shall_v why_o they_o be_v so_o exasperate_v and_o enrage_v against_o they_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o which_o they_o be_v resolve_v to_o yield_v obedience_n they_o may_v comply_v in_o every_o thing_n and_o so_o the_o world_n and_o they_o may_v be_v very_o good_a friend_n but_o when_o the_o word_n forbid_v what_o the_o world_n require_v &_o that_o most_o vehement_o too_o perhaps_o they_o be_v force_v to_o cross_v the_o world_n and_o and_o so_o the_o word_n bring_v the_o world_n and_o they_o out_o these_o man_n say_v they_o be_v so_o precise_a and_o holy_a that_o they_o must_v have_v scripture_n for_o every_o thing_n they_o say_v or_o do_v they_o will_v do_v nothing_o but_o what_o they_o have_v a_o warrant_n for_o out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o we_o will_v make_v restraint_n upon_o they_o they_o curb_v they_o and_o they_o hold_v they_o in_o and_o hence_o they_o be_v enrage_v against_o it_o they_o endeavour_v what_o they_o can_v to_o break_v the_o bond_n of_o god_n asunder_o they_o be_v always_o contradict_v and_o oppose_v and_o gainsay_v and_o raise_v quarrel_n and_o dispute_v against_o the_o word_n because_o they_o hate_v it_o but_o now_o the_o saint_n not_o worthy_a the_o keep_n any_o long_o there_o be_v no_o care_n at_o all_o to_o walk_v by_o it_o when_o there_o be_v gross_a and_o horrid_a deviation_n from_o it_o they_o be_v not_o look_v upon_o though_o false_o and_o corrupt_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v where_o have_v be_v the_o jew_n or_o turk_n who_o for_o his_o talmud_n or_o his_o koran_n which_o be_v the_o scripture_n they_o receive_v and_o use_v have_v put_v himself_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o tormentor_n these_o and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o do_v make_v it_o in_o itself_o extreme_o credible_a that_o that_o which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o they_o may_v not_o so_o take_v hold_v upon_o we_o to_o convince_v we_o notwithstanding_o they_o may_v not_o chase_v our_o scruple_n all_o away_o nor_o clear_v up_o all_o doubt_n unless_o some_o further_a thing_n be_v do_v to_o make_v it_o credit_v by_o we_o and_o to_o make_v we_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o we_o receive_v no_o other_o mean_n will_v do_v without_o this_o but_o this_o and_o this_o alone_a will_v do_v it_o this_o be_v a_o absolute_a and_o satisfy_a testimony_n of_o itself_o which_o carry_v all_o before_o it_o and_o put_v the_o matter_n out_o of_o question_n where_o it_o come_v other_o thing_n may_v make_v it_o credible_a but_o this_o this_o assurance_n and_o second_o by_o give_v we_o those_o gift_n and_o grace_n which_o make_v we_o able_a to_o receive_v it_o first_o by_o remove_v those_o impediment_n that_o hinder_v this_o assurance_n there_o be_v a_o double_a hindrance_n or_o impediment_n in_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n first_o ignorance_n whereby_o our_o eye_n be_v close_v as_o it_o be_v the_o word_n have_v light_a second_o hindrance_n be_v corruption_n by_o mean_n of_o which_o although_o we_o see_v it_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o but_o hate_n it_o and_o dislike_v it_o and_o reject_v it_o these_o two_o the_o holy_a spirit_n cure_v and_o remove_v by_o a_o double_a remedy_n the_o first_o illumination_n restore_v our_o decay_a understanding_n to_o some_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o their_o first_o light_n may_v understand_v the_o scripture_n and_o see_v those_o admirable_a ray_n and_o beam_n of_o divine_a and_o heavenly_a light_n that_o shine_v in_o they_o and_o also_o rectify_v our_o corrupt_a affection_n that_o we_o may_v love_v they_o and_o embrace_v they_o we_o come_v to_o be_v assure_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v indeed_o and_o truth_n the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o you_o see_v the_o spirit_n work_v not_o this_o assurance_n in_o we_o by_o add_v any_o thing_n to_o god_n word_n by_o cure_v any_o fail_n or_o defect_n in_o it_o but_o only_o by_o bring_v it_o into_o the_o light_n and_o represent_v it_o unto_o we_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n do_v not_o make_v it_o credible_a for_o it_o be_v so_o in_o itself_o abundant_o beyond_o all_o possibility_n even_o of_o the_o best_a addition_n but_o it_o make_v it_o so_o to_o we_o by_o cure_v and_o remove_v the_o impediment_n and_o supply_v the_o defect_n which_o be_v in_o we_o by_o mean_n of_o which_o we_o can_v apprehend_v it_o as_o it_o be_v and_o i_o mention_v this_o the_o rather_o because_o some_o have_v be_v apt_a to_o say_v of_o late_a the_o word_n without_o the_o spirit_n be_v no_o more_o to_o they_o then_o any_o other_o book_n or_o any_o other_o piece_n of_o writing_n now_o if_o their_o meaning_n be_v to_o blame_v themselves_o in_o this_o and_o to_o import_v that_o their_o corruption_n and_o their_o ignorance_n be_v such_o that_o unless_o the_o spirit_n help_v they_o they_o can_v come_v to_o understand_v it_o or_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o better_a than_o another_o book_n it_o may_v receive_v a_o pretty_a fair_a construction_n but_o if_o their_o intention_n be_v to_o undervalue_v and_o abase_v the_o scripture_n as_o if_o the_o proper_a and_o innate_a and_o real_a worth_n thereof_o depend_v whole_o on_o the_o spirit_n revelation_n it_o be_v a_o horrid_a derogation_n from_o the_o precious_a word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o without_o the_o spirit_n it_o may_v be_v no_o more_o to_o we_o then_o any_o other_o book_n such_o be_v the_o darkness_n and_o profaneness_n of_o our_o heart_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v more_o in_o itself_o whether_o the_o spirit_n show_v it_o we_o or_o no._n the_o spirit_n in_o this_o work_n of_o he_o do_v not_o make_v it_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o only_o to_o appear_v so_o it_o make_v no_o alteration_n in_o the_o word_n but_o in_o ourselves_o when_o first_o it_o tell_v we_o and_o assure_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v clear_o so_o before_o or_o else_o it_o certify_v we_o of_o a_o falsehood_n and_o untruth_n only_o it_o be_v not_o apprehend_v and_o believe_v to_o be_v so_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o spirit_n work_v to_o make_v we_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v without_o it_o and_o therefore_o that_o we_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o persuasion_n we_o must_v do_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o we_o must_v cry_v to_o god_n to_o send_v down_o his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o give_v in_o this_o assurance_n to_o we_o to_o set_v his_o seal_n and_o testimony_n to_o it_o that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o so_o to_o put_v the_o matter_n out_o of_o all_o question_n to_o satisfy_v we_o without_o any_o further_a scruple_n that_o all_o that_o be_v deliver_v in_o it_o be_v of_o god_n 2._o we_o must_v take_v in_o and_o cherish_v all_o the_o light_n that_o from_o the_o spirit_n shine_v upon_o the_o soul_n sometime_o a_o beam_n break_v in_o upon_o we_o on_o a_o sudden_a it_o make_v we_o see_v and_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o it_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o that_o all_o doubt_n be_v banish_v quite_o in_o that_o particular_a but_o we_o neglect_v it_o and_o permit_v our_o thought_n to_o be_v mislead_v to_o other_o thing_n before_o we_o fix_v and_o settle_v upon_o this_o persuasion_n and_o so_o our_o assurance_n fail_v and_o our_o doubt_n return_v again_o the_o spirit_n offer_v clear_a illumination_n and_o conviction_n and_o we_o take_v no_o notice_n of_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v just_a it_o shall_v be_v withdraw_v again_o and_o thus_o far_o of_o our_o saviour_n declaration_n of_o his_o apostle_n and_o disciple_n due_a and_o ready_a entertainment_n of_o the_o word_n which_o he_o deliver_v together_o with_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v
particular_a dependence_n of_o one_o of_o they_o upon_o the_o other_o if_o you_o consider_v they_o and_o look_v upon_o they_o in_o a_o joint_a dependence_n upon_o that_o which_o go_v before_o so_o that_o which_o come_v of_o it_o and_o follow_v it_o among_o his_o hearer_n their_o good_a reception_n of_o 〈◊〉_d message_n they_o receive_v his_o word_n their_o good_a persuasion_n of_o himself_o the_o messenger_n they_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o be_v come_v from_o god_n and_o where_o do_v ever_o any_o messenger_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v faithful_a in_o his_o place_n miss_v altogether_o of_o success_n and_o good_a esteem_n among_o the_o people_n it_o be_v true_a some_o will_v dislike_v he_o and_o oppose_v he_o and_o hate_v he_o for_o his_o faithfulness_n as_o ahab_n do_v micaiah_n but_o the_o wise_a and_o the_o best_a will_v value_v he_o and_o love_v he_o and_o respect_v he_o for_o it_o there_o be_v a_o special_a blessing_n of_o the_o lord_n on_o the_o fidelity_n of_o his_o ambassador_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n and_o reason_n that_o they_o seldom_o fail_v of_o do_v some_o good_a and_o of_o find_v some_o fruit_n and_o of_o have_v some_o regard_n from_o those_o who_o they_o be_v send_v to_o and_o there_o be_v something_o in_o their_o faithfulness_n itself_o when_o it_o come_v once_o to_o be_v observe_v by_o the_o people_n to_o gain_v their_o heart_n and_o to_o win_v their_o good_a affection_n and_o submission_n to_o themselves_o and_o to_o their_o preach_n when_o they_o be_v once_o persuade_v and_o convince_v that_o their_o minister_n be_v faithful_a this_o have_v a_o mighty_a operation_n on_o they_o if_o they_o be_v not_o very_o stupid_a and_o profane_a to_o make_v they_o hear_v he_o and_o respect_v he_o and_o obey_v he_o so_o that_o to_o give_v you_o but_o a_o word_n of_o application_n use_v this_o point_v we_o with_o the_o finger_n to_o the_o true_a and_o real_a cause_n why_o many_o that_o pretend_v themselves_o at_o least_o to_o be_v the_o messenger_n of_o god_n and_o the_o messenger_n of_o christ_n do_v find_v no_o better_a entertainment_n with_o the_o people_n their_o person_n be_v despise_v their_o ministry_n be_v slight_v themselves_o and_o their_o word_n be_v not_o regard_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n the_o people_n find_v they_o be_v unfaithful_a and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o they_o have_v no_o opinion_n of_o they_o no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o that_o will_v be_v well_o esteem_v among_o their_o hearer_n that_o will_v have_v their_o ministry_n find_v some_o success_n and_o fruit_n and_o efficacy_n in_o they_o must_v show_v all_o good_a fidelity_n in_o the_o discharge_n and_o execution_n of_o their_o office_n but_o you_o will_v ask_v i_o how_o may_v this_o be_v do_v and_o wherein_o do_v this_o consist_v i_o will_v show_v you_o in_o a_o word_n and_o pass_v on_o to_o another_o point_n of_o observation_n the_o messenger_n of_o jesus_n christ_n if_o he_o will_v be_v well_o receive_v and_o well-approved_n must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n especial_o two_o way_n 1._o in_o a_o active_a way_n he_o must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n in_o two_o respect_n first_o in_o a_o right_a delivery_n of_o his_o message_n as_o he_o receive_v it_o from_o his_o master_n and_o second_o in_o a_o delivery_n of_o it_o too_o for_o a_o right_a end_n that_o be_v for_o his_o master_n end_n and_o not_o his_o own_o 1._o he_o must_v show_v it_o in_o a_o right_a delivery_n of_o his_o message_n just_a as_o he_o receive_v it_o from_o his_o master_n he_o must_v not_o alter_v it_o or_o change_v it_o in_o the_o least_o degree_n to_o make_v it_o suit_n with_o the_o genius_n of_o the_o time_n or_o the_o pleasure_n of_o superior_n or_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o people_n for_o if_o they_o once_o perceive_v that_o he_o will_v serve_v the_o word_n to_o any_o interest_n and_o make_v it_o to_o comply_v with_o any_o humour_n though_o they_o may_v like_v it_o well_o enough_o who_o humour_n and_o corruption_n he_o comply_v with_o yet_o they_o will_v never_o like_v he_o nor_o think_v the_o better_a of_o he_o but_o the_o worse_o no_o they_o will_v look_v upon_o he_o as_o a_o man_n of_o no_o fidelity_n of_o no_o conscience_n and_o so_o according_o will_n suspect_n and_o undervalue_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o deliver_v whereas_o if_o he_o deliver_v what_o he_o have_v receive_v without_o fear_n without_o favour_n and_o will_v not_o vary_v in_o the_o least_o degree_n to_o comply_v with_o any_o man_n they_o must_v take_v it_o as_o it_o come_v they_o will_v say_v of_o he_o as_o ahab_n of_o micaiah_n 1_o king_n 22.8_o i_o hate_v he_o for_o he_o prophecy_v against_o i_o still_o but_o yet_o he_o be_v a_o prophet_n of_o the_o lord_n he_o cross_v i_o and_o meet_v with_o i_o continual_o but_o yet_o i_o must_v confess_v he_o be_v a_o honest_a and_o a_o faithful_a man_n 2._o as_o he_o must_v show_v his_o faithfulness_n in_o a_o right_n and_o just_a delivery_n of_o his_o message_n so_o in_o the_o second_o place_n in_o a_o delivery_n of_o it_o too_o for_o right_a end_n conceive_v it_o for_o his_o master_n end_n and_o not_o his_o own_o to_o advance_v christ_n glory_n to_o build_v up_o christ_n church_n to_o save_v the_o soul_n of_o christ_n people_n if_o we_o will_v be_v well_o receive_v and_o entertain_v our_o hearer_n must_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o distrust_v that_o that_o which_o we_o deliver_v though_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o right_a and_o sound_a be_v to_o satisfy_v our_o own_o passion_n or_o to_o promote_v our_o own_o end_n first_o not_o to_o satisfy_v our_o own_o passion_n they_o must_v not_o think_v that_o our_o seem_a heat_n and_o zeal_n be_v for_o ourselves_o and_o not_o for_o christ_n and_o this_o we_o must_v be_v very_o wary_a of_o in_o the_o great_a difference_n that_o be_v on_o foot_n at_o this_o time_n corruption_n will_v be_v apt_a enough_o if_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o to_o make_v we_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a against_o those_o and_o their_o opinion_n who_o be_v it_o may_v be_v violent_a against_o we_o and_o if_o they_o apprehend_v we_o so_o we_o shall_v never_o do_v they_o good_a and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o carry_v matter_n so_o that_o we_o may_v satisfy_v they_o and_o convince_v they_o that_o we_o speak_v nothing_o out_o of_o spleen_n against_o they_o and_o to_o this_o end_n it_o will_v be_v prudence_n to_o forbear_v loose_a fling_n and_o bitter_a gird_n at_o they_o we_o must_v in_o no_o wise_n betray_v any_o truth_n of_o jesus_n christ_n by_o our_o neglect_v to_o appear_v and_o show_v ourselves_o for_o it_o who_o ever_o set_v themselves_o against_o it_o but_o we_o shall_v rather_o do_v it_o in_o a_o way_n of_o reason_n and_o solid_a conviction_n then_o in_o a_o way_n of_o passion_n and_o bitter_a opposition_n and_o in_o this_o way_n undoubted_o we_o shall_v do_v christ_n and_o it_o most_o service_n second_o our_o hearer_n must_v have_v no_o occasion_n to_o distrust_v that_o that_o which_o we_o deliver_v aim_v at_o our_o own_o respect_n that_o we_o seek_v ourselves_o in_o it_o our_o own_o honour_n by_o vain_a ostentation_n of_o wisdom_n and_o eloquence_n and_o secular_a learning_n our_o own_o advantage_n by_o insinuation_n and_o please_a and_o flattery_n so_o make_v merchandise_n of_o those_o that_o hear_v we_o as_o the_o apostle_n phrase_n be_v we_o must_v be_v able_a to_o appeal_v for_o this_o as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 1_o thes_n 2.3_o our_o exhortation_n be_v not_o of_o deceit_n or_o guile_n but_o as_o we_o be_v allow_v of_o shall_v not_o his_o authority_n and_o power_n be_v yield_v and_o allow_v to_o be_v as_o great_a upon_o the_o creature_n which_o he_o make_v of_o nothing_o as_o the_o potter_n on_o the_o clay_n which_o he_o can_v never_o make_v and_o yet_o what_o ever_o god_n decree_v concern_v any_o man_n may_v be_v which_o he_o reserve_v in_o his_o own_o breast_n and_o bosom_n he_o never_o damn_v or_o destroy_v a_o man_n till_o he_o deserve_v it_o the_o potter_n break_v a_o vessel_n it_o may_v be_v for_o no_o fault_n at_o all_o but_o to_o satisfy_v his_o fancy_n or_o to_o manifest_v his_o power_n and_o to_o show_v what_o he_o can_v do_v but_o god_n the_o great_a creator_n of_o the_o world_n do_v never_o so_o with_o any_o creature_n if_o he_o dash_v any_o man_n to_o piece_n it_o be_v because_o he_o have_v deserve_v it_o very_o just_o by_o his_o sin_n if_o he_o condemn_v he_o there_o be_v a_o meritorious_a cause_n and_o he_o may_v true_o say_v to_o such_o a_o person_n thy_o destruction_n be_v of_o thyself_o but_o in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o will_v be_v say_v perhaps_o by_o some_o object_n if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o god_n in_o his_o eternal_a counsel_n and_o decree_n have_v appoint_v and_o disign_v some_o certain_a special_a person_n to_o destruction_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o such_o to_o hear_v and_o pray_v and_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o attain_v to_o salvation_n they_o be_v as_o good_a to_o fit_v still_o and_o do_v nothing_o for_o all_o will_v be_v to_o no_o purpose_n if_o they_o be_v reprobate_v they_o must_v be_v destroy_v the_o counsel_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v stand_v if_o they_o be_v reprobate_v but_o who_o be_v reprobate_v can_v they_o tell_v sol._n sol._n have_v thou_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v thou_o assure_v that_o thou_o be_v reprobate_v and_o appoint_v to_o destruction_n if_o so_o indeed_o there_o be_v some_o colour_n for_o thou_o to_o neglect_v the_o mean_n of_o attainment_n to_o salvation_n but_o know_v my_o brethren_n that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o be_v infallible_o assure_v of_o his_o reprobation_n without_o immediate_a revelation_n as_o perhaps_o saul_n be_v it_o be_v true_a he_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o his_o election_n never_o of_o his_o reprobation_n the_o scripture_n urge_v and_o persuade_v man_n to_o assure_v the_o one_o never_o to_o assure_v the_o other_o it_o give_v mark_n and_o evidence_n of_o the_o one_o it_o give_v no_o evidence_n of_o the_o other_o indeed_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n where_o it_o be_v find_v follow_v after_o of_o reprobation_n but_o who_o be_v able_a to_o determine_v whether_o he_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o no_o as_o for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o be_o confident_a that_o god_n have_v order_v matter_n so_o that_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o determine_v that_o he_o be_v reject_v by_o he_o and_o that_o to_o this_o intent_n that_o all_o man_n may_v be_v hold_v in_o diligent_a attendance_n on_o the_o mean_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o atonement_n with_o he_o not_o know_v what_o the_o issue_n and_o event_n may_v be_v and_o what_o then_o will_v thou_o take_v that_o to_o be_v certain_a which_o be_v very_o doubtful_a and_o on_o so_o weak_a a_o ground_n as_o this_o neglect_n and_o slight_a the_o mean_n which_o may_v for_o aught_o thou_o know_v be_v powerful_a to_o the_o issue_n and_o event_n may_v be_v i_o will_v attend_v upon_o they_o be_v careful_a in_o the_o use_n and_o practice_n of_o they_o to_o the_o utmost_a of_o my_o power_n i_o know_v if_o i_o neglect_v ourselves_o how_o slender_a the_o degree_n and_o measure_n of_o our_o grace_n be_v so_o that_o we_o know_v not_o where_o to_o find_v comfort_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v in_o such_o a_o case_n to_o keep_v our_o spirit_n from_o despondency_n why_o true_o among_o many_o other_o way_n this_o be_v a_o very_a special_a one_o to_o fix_v our_o thought_n upon_o the_o intercession_n of_o our_o saviour_n so_o strong_o now_o he_o be_v in_o heaven_n at_o so_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o we_o i_o mean_v as_o he_o be_v man_n that_o he_o be_v always_o take_v all_o advantage_n to_o further_o and_o that_o all_o his_o people_n may_v have_v recourse_n thereto_o on_o all_o occasion_n for_o their_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o when_o we_o be_v in_o any_o trouble_n when_o sorrow_n seize_v deep_a i_o of_o these_o two_o particular_n first_o the_o thing_n desire_v sanctification_n sanctify_v they_o say_v our_o saviour_n and_o then_o the_o outward_a instrumental_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o pray_v they_o may_v be_v sanctify_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n that_o be_v the_o word_n as_o he_o explain_v it_o afterward_o sanctify_v they_o through_o thy_o truth_n both_o yield_v we_o our_o this_o observation_n doctrine_n the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n by_o which_o he_o sanctify_v his_o people_n it_o be_v the_o instrument_n in_o god_n hand_n by_o which_o he_o do_v this_o the_o conversion_n of_o their_o hearer_n and_o to_o the_o work_n of_o unfeigned_a faith_n and_o grace_n in_o they_o you_o may_v behold_v three_o thousand_o sinner_n wrought_v upon_o by_o one_o sermon_n act_v 2.41_o and_o yet_o again_o as_o if_o these_o have_v be_v a_o few_o five_o thousand_o by_o another_o sermon_n act_v 4.4_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v my_o brethren_n that_o the_o word_n be_v call_v the_o word_n of_o grace_n because_o it_o work_v grace_n in_o god_n people_n but_o whether_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n whether_o one_o or_o both_o of_o they_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n by_o which_o god_n sanctify_v his_o people_n will_v need_v to_o be_v a_o little_a further_o open_v and_o resolve_v and_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o from_o the_o scripture_n that_o both_o of_o they_o be_v instrument_n in_o god_n hand_n by_o which_o he_o sanctify_v his_o people_n 1._o god_n sanctify_v his_o people_n preparative_o by_o the_o law_n the_o law_n convert_v and_o work_v grace_n by_o way_n of_o preparation_n it_o show_v a_o man_n his_o sin_n and_o his_o trangression_n it_o empti_v he_o of_o all_o opinion_n of_o himself_o it_o humble_v he_o and_o lay_v he_o low_a in_o apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o so_o indeed_o it_o make_v he_o fit_a to_o entertain_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o he_o will_v give_v his_o grace_n unto_o the_o humble_a john_n baptist_n rough_a and_o rigid_a preach_v of_o the_o law_n you_o know_v my_o brethren_n must_v prepare_v the_o way_n for_o christ_n he_o must_v be_v like_o a_o pioneer_n to_o go_v before_o he_o to_o bring_v down_o every_o high_a exalt_a thought_n to_o make_v the_o mountain_n level_v with_o the_o valley_n he_o must_v be_v like_o a_o harbinger_n to_o ride_v before_o and_o take_v up_o room_n for_o jesus_n christ_n to_o write_v his_o name_n upon_o the_o heart_n this_o heart_n be_v take_v up_o for_o christ_n to_o cause_v these_o everlasting_a door_n to_o be_v set_v open_a to_o he_o when_o he_o come_v and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v thus_o prepare_v thus_o empty_v and_o thus_o open_v once_o than_o it_o be_v fit_a for_o jesus_n christ_n with_o all_o the_o grace_n of_o his_o grace_n of_o god_n neither_o that_o grace_n which_o be_v in_o god_n i_o mean_v his_o free_a and_o undeserved_a favour_n nor_o yet_o that_o grace_n which_o be_v communicate_v and_o dispense_v from_o he_o to_o we_o i_o mean_v the_o gift_n of_o his_o spirit_n whether_o they_o be_v such_o as_o appertain_v to_o edification_n or_o sanctification_n but_o effective_a as_o the_o schoolman_n speak_v the_o gospel_n be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n because_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v the_o effect_n and_o issue_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o gospel_n be_v the_o instrumental_a mean_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n which_o it_o effect_v under_o god_n and_o work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o people_n and_o under_o this_o expression_n it_o be_v set_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o law_n for_o as_o the_o law_n do_v not_o reveal_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n the_o mediator_n and_o redeemer_n as_o the_o gospel_n do_v so_o neither_o do_v it_o work_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o mean_v
