least_o that_o there_o be_v some_o extraordinary_a virtue_n in_o those_o thing_n to_o make_v a_o man_n happy_a there_o be_v many_o character_n that_o do_v evident_o discover_v the_o relic_n of_o this_o disease_n that_o it_o be_v not_o full_o cure_v even_o where_o grace_n begin_v his_o work_n but_o i_o shall_v better_o touch_v on_o this_o afterward_o and_o shall_v therefore_o pass_v it_o now_o that_o make_v i_o happy_a but_o yet_o alas_o when_o all_o come_v to_o all_o they_o go_v as_o gaudy_a and_o as_o fantastic_a as_o any_o other_o and_o make_v so_o much_o of_o it_o and_o be_v as_o ready_a and_o as_o foolish_a to_o run_v to_o the_o same_o excess_n of_o riot_n as_o though_o god_n be_v not_o their_o ornament_n and_o their_o happiness_n if_o they_o do_v believe_v this_o and_o remember_v this_o that_o their_o happiness_n and_o excellency_n lie_v all_o in_o god_n though_o they_o may_v make_v use_n of_o other_o thing_n in_o a_o sober_a and_o a_o modest_a and_o exemplary_a way_n such_o as_o be_v fit_a to_o give_v a_o example_n to_o the_o world_n of_o extraordinary_a piety_n and_o sobriety_n in_o this_o course_n and_o with_o this_o caution_n i_o say_v though_o they_o may_v make_v use_n of_o any_o sober_a and_o modest_a way_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o go_v so_o vain_o and_o fond_o and_o gaudy_o and_o place_n so_o much_o happiness_n in_o these_o thing_n do_v they_o believe_v this_o that_o their_o happiness_n lie_v in_o god_n and_o sure_o it_o argue_v that_o they_o have_v not_o that_o high_a esteem_n of_o god_n and_o that_o they_o repose_v so_o much_o confidence_n in_o he_o as_o in_o their_o only_a happiness_n they_o will_v not_o else_o be_v so_o fond_a of_o so_o foolish_a thing_n for_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n incompatible_a with_o a_o mind_n that_o be_v full_o possess_v with_o the_o excellency_n of_o god_n which_o if_o we_o have_v it_o will_v make_v we_o look_v a_o squint_a on_o all_o other_o thing_n even_o the_o best_a thing_n and_o much_o more_o on_o thing_n of_o a_o inferior_a nature_n yet_o i_o say_v this_o folly_n of_o many_o professor_n that_o they_o place_v so_o much_o in_o these_o poor_a thing_n and_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v bewail_v 3_o but_o to_o come_v to_o that_o which_o i_o aim_v at_o most_o weak_a exhortation_n to_o the_o weak_a and_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o principal_a viz._n the_o matter_n of_o exhortation_n that_o we_o will_v every_o one_o of_o we_o see_v the_o main_a of_o our_o happiness_n lie_v in_o god_n and_o so_o much_o of_o it_o that_o he_o alone_o can_v make_v we_o happy_a if_o we_o not_o save_v knowledge_n but_o they_o that_o have_v the_o least_o degree_n of_o knowledge_n so_o it_o be_v such_o as_o have_v a_o influence_n to_o draw_v the_o heart_n and_o affection_n along_o with_o it_o to_o love_n god_n and_o obey_v god_n though_o it_o be_v i_o say_v in_o a_o lesser_a degree_n and_o a_o weak_a light_n yet_o it_o be_v indeed_o solid_a and_o save_a knowledge_n such_o a_o knowledge_n as_o that_o which_o i_o can_v say_v it_o be_v a_o substantial_a and_o a_o penetrative_a knowledge_n that_o it_o do_v not_o swim_v in_o the_o brain_n but_o that_o it_o do_v comprehend_v those_o thing_n not_o only_o slab_a they_o over_o but_o it_o be_v official_a and_o operative_a and_o that_o indeed_o be_v the_o most_o characteristical_a and_o intrinsical_a difference_n and_o it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v indeed_o save_v knowledge_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o a_o great_a or_o lesser_a measure_n so_o it_o be_v operative_a and_o effectual_a on_o the_o affection_n and_o action_n of_o man_n this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n in_o the_o explication_n and_o belong_v to_o the_o first_o branch_n viz._n of_o understanding_n which_o comprehend_v knowledge_n and_o belief_n now_o the_o second_o follow_v as_o there_o must_v be_v solid_a knowledge_n and_o belief_n love_n sovereign_a fear_n and_o love_n so_o there_o must_v be_v sovereign_a fear_n and_o love_n of_o god_n which_o depend_v on_o the_o former_a for_o than_o i_o know_v knowledge_n have_v do_v his_o work_n save_o when_o it_o have_v raise_v up_o and_o wrought_v on_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n and_o among_o other_o affection_n to_o speak_v only_o of_o those_o two_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o master_n of_o all_o our_o affection_n and_o which_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o relation_n between_o we_o and_o god_n be_v most_o predominant_a and_o which_o be_v most_o frequent_o use_v and_o name_v in_o scripture_n though_o i_o do_v not_o exclude_v any_o other_o for_o if_o the_o heart_n be_v win_v it_o be_v wisdom_n he_o be_v uncapable_a of_o learn_v any_o thing_n he_o let_v we_o slip_v the_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n which_o otherwise_o he_o may_v have_v only_o upon_o a_o vain_a conceit_n that_o he_o be_v wise_a enough_o already_o and_o therefore_o as_o they_o use_v to_o observe_v the_o ground_n on_o which_o the_o peacock_n use_v to_o sit_v be_v ordinary_o note_v to_o be_v even_o by_o that_o hindrance_n to_o his_o own_o knowledge_n or_o from_o receive_v any_o knowledge_n and_o therefore_o as_o i_o have_v sometime_o note_v in_o another_o case_n which_o be_v appliable_a here_o you_o know_v in_o a_o dish_n there_o be_v a_o inside_n of_o it_o which_o be_v hollow_a and_o a_o outside_n which_o be_v convex_a now_o if_o you_o will_v pour_v any_o thing_n in_o it_o you_o must_v not_o pour_v it_o on_o the_o outside_n which_o be_v convex_a for_o that_o convex_a superficies_n by_o reason_n of_o its_o convexity_n can_v hold_v nothing_o but_o all_o run_v over_o but_o if_o you_o pour_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o inside_n it_o will_v hold_v just_a according_a to_o its_o proportion_n as_o you_o can_v pour_v in_o the_o humble_a spirit_n be_v like_o the_o concave_n and_o hollow_a of_o the_o it_o it_o have_v emptiness_n and_o can_v hold_v it_o but_o now_o the_o proud_a spirit_n be_v like_o the_o convex_a superficies_n and_o every_o thing_n be_v but_o spill_v that_o be_v pour_v on_o it_o for_o there_o be_v no_o hollowness_n no_o concave_a no_o capaciousnesse_n to_o hold_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o familiar_a similitude_n of_o the_o mountain_n and_o the_o valley_n the_o rain_n fall_v on_o the_o mountain_n and_o make_v it_o nothing_o fruitful_a because_o all_o the_o rain_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o proclivity_n and_o the_o height_n of_o the_o mountain_n slip_n and_o slide_v down_o from_o the_o mountain_n and_o the_o mountain_n shelf_n it_o off_o as_o it_o be_v from_o its_o self_n and_o not_o only_o cast_v off_o the_o rain_n but_o itself_o also_o at_o least_o the_o best_a of_o itself_o with_o the_o rain_n and_o so_o much_o more_o fatten_v the_o low_a ground_n so_o that_o the_o valley_n have_v not_o only_o the_o fruitfulness_n that_o come_v by_o the_o rain_n but_o also_o that_o which_o come_v by_o the_o soil_n which_o fall_v on_o they_o from_o the_o hill_n by_o the_o rain_n and_o true_o it_o be_v the_o valley_n the_o lowly_a spirit_n that_o be_v make_v capable_a of_o any_o thing_n but_o the_o lofty_a spirit_n drive_v all_o from_o itself_o and_o so_o make_v itself_o uncapable_a to_o receive_v any_o thing_n and_o unfit_a to_o attain_v any_o thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o will_v get_v knowledge_n attain_v to_o this_o first_o step_n in_o the_o ladder_n that_o reach_v to_o happiness_n we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o pride_n the_o proud_a lofty_a spirit_n be_v not_o in_o the_o way_n to_o attain_v knowledge_n nor_o in_o any_o way_n to_o profit_n by_o the_o mean_n which_o may_v be_v good_a for_o that_o purpose_n but_o the_o humble_a spirit_n that_o find_v a_o emptiness_n in_o itself_o a_o hunger_a and_o thirst_v after_o knowledge_n such_o a_o spirit_n be_v fit_a to_o gain_v by_o all_o advantage_n and_o all_o that_o be_v of_o a_o ingenuous_a spirit_n will_v interpret_v what_o i_o mean_v by_o that_o though_o at_o the_o first_o those_o that_o be_v not_o learn_v understand_v it_o not_o yet_o that_o all_o may_v i_o comprehend_v in_o it_o these_o two_o thing_n 1_o a_o man_n must_v be_v free_a from_o partiality_n and_o prejudice_n 2_o and_o a_o man_n must_v be_v full_a of_o a_o estimacie_n and_o good_a opinion_n and_o good_a affection_n towards_o knowledge_n and_o such_o ingenuity_n of_o spirit_n prepare_v a_o man_n exceed_o for_o thrive_a by_o the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n and_o so_o for_o attain_v the_o thing_n itself_o prejudice_n freedom_n from_o partiality_n and_o prejudice_n 1_o for_o the_o former_a freedom_n from_o prejudice_n and_o partiality_n that_o be_v necessary_a for_o if_o a_o man_n be_v partially-minded_n it_o will_v hinder_v he_o in_o profit_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n as_o for_o example_n such_o partiality_n whereby_o one_o esteem_v of_o man_n and_o so_o that_o he_o disesteem_v all_o other_o perhaps_o this_o man_n may_v get_v a_o little_a by_o that_o man_n who_o he_o do_v esteem_v but_o lose_v a_o great_a deal_n for_o it_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o partiality_n and_o why_o because_o he_o can_v always_o hear_v one_o he_o therefore_o never_o come_v to_o hear_v any_o other_o and_o if_o he_o do_v his_o partiality_n choke_v the_o benefit_n and_o so_o for_o prejudice_n to_o come_v with_o a_o prejudicate_a opinion_n to_o the_o hear_n of_o any_o man_n or_o the_o read_n of_o any_o thing_n to_o have_v the_o mind_n possess_v and_o anticipate_v with_o prejudice_n it_o will_v hinder_v a_o man_n from_o attain_v to_o that_o knowledge_n which_o otherwise_o he_o may_v gain_v by_o that_o man_n or_o that_o thing_n as_o if_o a_o man_n now_o have_v a_o and_o aim_v which_o you_o know_v i_o do_v touch_v in_o the_o explication_n and_o will_v therefore_o but_o brief_o touch_v here_o in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o it_o 2_o i_o shall_v suggest_v some_o mean_n in_o the_o use_n of_o which_o we_o may_v come_v to_o attain_v this_o knowledge_n 2_o i_o will_v propound_v some_o consideration_n that_o may_v whet_v we_o on_o unto_o it_o but_o all_o very_a brief_n 1_o for_o the_o first_o therefore_o what_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n shall_v a_o man_n aim_v at_o the_o get_n of_o now_o i_o shall_v circumscribe_v that_o in_o these_o three_o particular_n 1_o mystery_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o man_n those_o essential_a thing_n that_o god_n have_v signify_v unto_o we_o in_o his_o covenant_n for_o our_o guidance_n to_o happiness_n the_o knowledge_n of_o these_o thing_n especial_o i_o know_v there_o be_v no_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n but_o be_v precious_a even_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mean_a thing_n the_o knowledge_n even_o of_o the_o base_a thing_n may_v be_v of_o very_o good_a use_n but_o what_o be_v all_o the_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n that_o make_v the_o world_n and_o of_o christ_n that_o redeem_v the_o world_n that_o be_v the_o knowledge_n which_o do_v immediate_o conduce_v towards_o our_o attain_n of_o happiness_n and_o salvation_n man_n may_v swell_v themselves_o in_o vain_a conceit_n of_o other_o kind_n of_o literature_n and_o look_v big_a and_o scornful_a upon_o this_o divine_a knowledge_n but_o yet_o one_o drachm_n of_o this_o one_o grain_n of_o this_o be_v worth_n more_o than_o all_o the_o knowledge_n in_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o remember_v this_o that_o we_o may_v not_o mistake_v our_o scope_n and_o aim_n i_o do_v not_o interdict_v any_o other_o knowledge_n subordinate_a in_o its_o place_n and_o rank_n but_o i_o set_v this_o in_o the_o high_a place_n and_o high_a rank_n the_o divine_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o apprehend_v the_o promise_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o to_o know_v what_o the_o happiness_n be_v to_o be_v in_o conjunction_n with_o god_n to_o have_v a_o glorify_a body_n and_o a_o glorify_a soul_n far_o beyond_o that_o excellency_n that_o be_v here_o but_o it_o be_v a_o other_o thing_n to_o apprehend_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v real_o promise_v shall_v be_v real_o perform_v by_o god_n and_o so_o to_o set_v a_o man_n soul_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n by_o faith_n that_o these_o be_v not_o only_o mere_a word_n but_o such_o as_o indeed_o shall_v be_v exhibit_v to_o all_o god_n servant_n many_o apprehend_v these_o thing_n and_o understand_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o they_o but_o yet_o they_o have_v a_o root_n of_o atheism_n in_o their_o heart_n so_o that_o they_o think_v they_o be_v but_o devise_v thing_n to_o keep_v man_n in_o awe_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o reality_n in_o they_o to_o have_v no_o subsistence_n it_o be_v therefore_o a_o knowledge_n of_o apprehension_n join_v with_o a_o full_a assent_n of_o faith_n rest_v on_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n promise_v but_o in_o this_o place_n i_o shall_v use_v the_o word_n no_o further_o 3_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o main_a of_o all_o degree_n degree_n viz._n in_o regard_n of_o the_o degree_n or_o manner_n i_o desire_v every_o one_o to_o be_v industrious_a after_o knowledge_n divine_a knowledge_n especial_o and_o careful_a to_o join_v assent_n of_o faith_n to_o their_o knowledge_n to_o mix_v and_o temper_v they_o together_o and_o last_o to_o aim_v at_o a_o soundness_n of_o knowledge_n and_o a_o soundness_n of_o believe_v that_o they_o be_v solid_a and_o not_o superficial_a that_o they_o have_v not_o mere_o flashing_n or_o glimmering_n of_o light_n like_a lightning_n which_o do_v not_o guide_v a_o man_n in_o the_o way_n but_o rather_o lead_v a_o man_n out_o of_o the_o way_n many_o man_n may_v have_v a_o flash_n of_o knowledge_n and_o assent_n but_o this_o be_v not_o bottom_v nor_o ground_v it_o be_v substantial_a and_o solid_a not_o some_o catching_n and_o snatching_n at_o some_o thing_n in_o religion_n extensively_n extensively_n here_o to_o get_v a_o scrap_n and_o there_o to_o get_v a_o scrap_n and_o in_o the_o other_o place_n another_o scrap_n still_o scrape_v at_o a_o little_a like_o a_o garment_n make_v up_o of_o patch_n but_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o know_v the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n and_o all_o thing_n necessary_a at_o least_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n to_o be_v ignorant_a in_o none_o of_o they_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o near_a connexion_n and_o that_o necessary_a influence_n that_o they_o must_v have_v in_o the_o form_n and_o fashion_v of_o a_o right_n and_o faithful_a receive_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n which_o will_v not_o be_v without_o such_o a_o solid_a knowledge_n as_o be_v apprehensive_a of_o all_o that_o be_v necessary_a intensively_n intensively_n 2_o it_o must_v be_v intensive_o solid_a and_o substantial_a not_o only_o to_o know_v and_o give_v assent_n to_o all_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v necessary_a not_o mere_o catch_v at_o one_o act_n or_o some_o piece_n of_o it_o but_o to_o join_v to_o this_o a_o penetration_n of_o knowledge_n not_o only_o to_o have_v it_o swim_v in_o the_o brain_n but_o that_o it_o penetrate_v and_o sink_v into_o the_o understanding_n and_o make_v a_o deep_a impression_n there_o a_o man_n may_v have_v sometime_o a_o swim_a notion_n in_o the_o brain_n float_v aloft_o on_o the_o top_n which_o never_o penetrate_v nor_o enter_v in_o a_o man_n which_o i_o desire_v we_o will_v most_o aim_v at_o not_o to_o content_v ourselves_o with_o a_o mere_a swim_a notion_n to_o lick_v on_o the_o outside_n as_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o fable_n of_o the_o fox_n when_o the_o crane_n invite_v the_o fox_n to_o the_o feast_n he_o provide_v gruel_n for_o he_o in_o a_o narrow_a mouth_a vessel_n so_o that_o he_o himself_o can_v put_v in_o his_o long_a bill_n and_o suck_v it_o out_o but_o the_o and_o penetrate_v it_o thorough_o make_v a_o deep_a impression_n that_o it_o be_v receive_v there_o and_o such_o a_o impression_n as_o may_v put_v a_o tincture_n on_o the_o heart_n and_o affection_n too_o for_o indeed_o that_o be_v never_o a_o perfect_a dye_n of_o knowledge_n do_v not_o redound_v and_o overflow_v to_o the_o affection_n and_o draw_v they_o leave_v a_o tincture_n on_o they_o and_o therein_o indeed_o be_v the_o crisis_n of_o knowledge_n when_o it_o be_v save_v and_o solid_a namely_o then_o when_o it_o be_v penetrate_v when_o it_o so_o far_o fill_v the_o understanding_n and_o enter_v so_o deep_o into_o it_o that_o there_o be_v a_o resultance_n to_o overflow_v from_o it_o on_o the_o affection_n to_o inflame_v and_o draw_v they_o that_o will_v give_v the_o through_o die_v which_o be_v in_o grain_n which_o will_v never_o out_o but_o true_o save_v 3_o let_v every_o one_o endeavour_n after_o a_o proportioble_a knowledge_n proportionable_o proportionable_o proportionable_a to_o his_o part_n and_o mean_n proportionable_a to_o the_o place_n in_o which_o god_n have_v set_v he_o and_o proportionable_a to_o the_o opportunity_n that_o god_n have_v give_v he_o where_o god_n bestow_v much_o he_o require_v much_o a_o lesser_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n may_v be_v save_v where_o god_n afford_v a_o lesser_a measure_n of_o light_n in_o time_n of_o superstition_n and_o darkness_n without_o all_o doubt_n many_o do_v get_v to_o heaven_n with_o a_o very_a weak_a light_n yet_o it_o be_v such_o that_o make_v a_o impression_n on_o their_o heart_n but_o far_o short_a of_o that_o glitteringnesse_n of_o light_n that_o be_v in_o our_o time_n therefore_o we_o shall_v for_o this_o be_v one_o branch_n of_o the_o exhortation_n labour_v every_o one_o to_o make_v his_o knowledge_n go_v hand_n in_o hand_n in_o a_o equipage_n with_o the_o mean_n that_o he_o enjoy_v with_o the_o opportunity_n he_o have_v afford_v he_o by_o god_n and_o with_o the_o part_n he_o have_v to_o make_v he_o capable_a they_o that_o have_v more_o mean_n let_v not_o they_o content_v themselves_o to_o have_v so_o much_o as_o some_o have_v have_v that_o live_v in_o time_n of_o darkness_n they_o that_o have_v part_n and_o better_a understanding_n let_v they_o not_o content_v themselves_o to_o have_v so_o much_o as_o a_o poor_a ignoramus_fw-la have_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o they_o though_o the_o thing_n itself_o be_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n and_o so_o be_v not_o necessary_a absolute_o yet_o god_n require_v more_o of_o they_o because_o he_o have_v give_v more_o to_o they_o god_n exact_v more_o at_o their_o hand_n because_o they_o have_v receive_v more_o at_o his_o hand_n god_n require_v that_o they_o shall_v keep_v proportion_n it_o how_o shall_v we_o attain_v
