kill_v thousand_o security_n ten_o thousand_o and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v note_v that_o when_o the_o devil_n have_v in_o the_o former_a temptation_n labour_v to_o bring_v christ_n to_o despair_v of_o his_o father_n providence_n now_o he_o labour_v the_o clean_a contrary_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n providence_n and_o here_o we_o may_v see_v the_o devil_n exceed_v cunning_a that_o he_o fight_v to_o carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o one_o extreme_a to_o another_o and_o thus_o do_v the_o devil_n deal_v with_o all_o man_n he_o seek_v to_o draw_v man_n either_o to_o presumption_n or_o else_o to_o despair_v and_o labour_n to_o carry_v they_o from_o one_o extreme_a to_o another_o as_o from_o covetousness_n to_o prodigality_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o avoid_v both_o the_o extreme_n use_v neither_o to_o presume_v too_o much_o nor_o yet_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o by_o despair_n but_o to_o keep_v the_o golden_a man_n be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n more_o to_o regard_v and_o desire_v a_o miracle_n then_o to_o hear_v the_o bless_a doctrine_n of_o jesus_n christ._n cast_v thyself_o down_o the_o devil_n have_v prove_v before_o the_o faith_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v most_o constant_a that_o he_o will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o doubt_v of_o his_o father_n providence_n in_o his_o great_a need_n now_o he_o take_v he_o see_v in_o we_o to_o make_v we_o presume_v as_o often_o he_o prevail_v by_o this_o mean_n to_o make_v man_n swell_v and_o think_v high_o of_o themselves_o for_o some_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v of_o learning_n wit_n eloquence_n etc._n etc._n to_o puff_n man_n up_o with_o satanical_a pride_n and_o overween_a oâ—_n themselves_o then_o cast_v thyself_o down_o the_o lord_n give_v the_o be_v real_o and_o local_o transport_v from_o the_o city_n to_o the_o mountain_n the_o reason_n why_o the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o mountain_n be_v these_o first_o because_o the_o devil_n in_o all_o thing_n desireâ—_n to_o imitate_v god_n and_o to_o become_v as_o it_o be_v god_n ape_n now_o we_o read_v that_o the_o lord_n carry_v moses_n to_o the_o mount_n nebo_n 1._o to_o show_v he_o all_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n so_o the_o devil_n to_o imitate_v god_n and_o by_o imitate_v god_n to_o match_v he_o and_o so_o to_o disgrace_v the_o lord_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o the_o mountain_n as_o it_o be_v likely_a to_o imitate_v god_n deal_v with_o moses_n second_o the_o devil_n carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o this_o high_a mountain_n as_o a_o most_o fit_a and_o convenient_a place_n to_o broach_v this_o his_o three_o and_o last_o temptation_n now_o in_o hand_n in_o that_o the_o devil_n do_v carry_v our_o saviour_n christ_n from_o jerusalem_n to_o this_o hill_n local_o hence_o we_o learn_v that_o he_o may_v by_o god_n permission_n have_v like_o power_n over_o the_o dear_a child_n of_o god_n not_o once_o but_o twice_o nay_o thrice_o &_o oftentimes_o we_o see_v this_o true_a in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n the_o head_n therefore_o if_o the_o lord_n permit_v satan_n and_o by_o his_o permission_n give_v the_o devil_n liberty_n to_o he_o can_v but_o see_v the_o one_o half_a of_o the_o earth_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v know_v he_o show_v they_o in_o a_o counterfeit_a vision_n now_o these_o vision_n of_o the_o devil_n they_o be_v either_o of_o the_o outward_a sense_n or_o else_o of_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o outward_a sense_n as_o the_o delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n make_v man_n think_v they_o see_v that_o they_o do_v not_o see_v indeed_o so_o the_o devil_n be_v say_v to_o show_v samuel_n to_o saul_n in_o a_o vision_n in_o his_o proper_a habit_n and_o this_o be_v indeed_o but_o a_o counterfeit_a samuel_n 28._o not_o that_o true_a samuel_n who_o rest_v in_o the_o grave_n concern_v his_o body_n and_o remain_v in_o heaven_n concern_v his_o soul_n second_o there_o be_v false_a vision_n and_o deluding_n of_o the_o understanding_n as_o the_o lord_n speak_v 4._o that_o he_o will_v make_v the_o false_a prophet_n ashamed_a of_o their_o lie_a vision_n and_o some_o of_o these_o vision_n come_v unto_o man_n sleep_v call_v dream_n deut._n 13._o 1._o some_o come_v wake_v as_o to_o such_o as_o have_v their_o brain_n craze_a they_o oftentimes_o have_v vision_n and_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v king_n or_o prophet_n as_o john_n baptist_n etc._n etc._n now_o concern_v this_o vision_n of_o christ_n offer_v by_o the_o devil_n he_o do_v it_o not_o only_o to_o the_o mind_n of_o christ_n but_o also_o to_o his_o out_o ward_n eye_n and_o visible_o by_o this_o practice_n of_o the_o devil_n we_o may_v behold_v his_o wonderful_a skill_n and_o power_n in_o that_o he_o can_v resemble_v to_o the_o outward_a sense_n in_o such_o a_o strange_a manner_n even_o as_o he_o list_v so_o great_a and_o wonderful_a matter_n and_o the_o like_a be_v do_v by_o magician_n and_o conjurer_n who_o by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o devil_n can_v reveal_v and_o show_v thing_n do_v in_o a_o far_a country_n or_o thing_n that_o be_v lose_v in_o a_o glass_n or_o for_o thing_n long_o pass_v can_v resemble_v they_o to_o outward_a sense_n in_o a_o glass_n or_o in_o the_o air_n so_o that_o those_o be_v deceive_v who_o be_v of_o mind_n that_o they_o can_v do_v this_o for_o if_o the_o devil_n can_v show_v christ_n all_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o they_o in_o so_o short_a a_o time_n then_o much_o more_o can_v he_o show_v some_o one_o particular_a thing_n to_o the_o eye_n and_o sense_n of_o man_n now_o let_v we_o mark_v the_o devil_n drift_n in_o this_o temptation_n &_o set_v before_o christ_n eye_n this_o goodly_a and_o glorious_a sight_n sure_o it_o be_v to_o this_o end_n that_o the_o like_v it_o they_o to_o desire_v and_o lust_n after_o it_o and_o so_o in_o the_o end_n to_o taste_v of_o it_o and_o thus_o he_o deal_v with_o christ_n first_o he_o show_v this_o glorious_a sight_n and_o the_o beauty_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n that_o if_o he_o can_v he_o may_v have_v move_v he_o to_o desire_v they_o and_o so_o make_v his_o temptation_n take_v place_n see_v this_o be_v satan_n ancient_a subtlety_n use_v it_o must_v warn_v we_o to_o take_v great_a heed_n of_o our_o outward_a sense_n especial_o the_o two_o sense_n of_o learning_n namely_o see_v and_o hear_v the_o eye_n and_o the_o â—ares_n be_v the_o two_o window_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o if_o the_o devil_n can_v get_v in_o his_o head_n there_o he_o will_v easy_o wind_v in_o all_o his_o body_n and_o poison_v our_o soul_n the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o tempt_v man_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o embrace_v heresy_n schism_n idolatry_n that_o he_o may_v destroy_v the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o he_o become_v a_o lie_a spirit_n in_o the_o mouth_n of_o four_o hundred_o false_a prophet_n at_o one_o time_n 22._o and_o when_o jehosuah_n the_o high_a priest_n come_v into_o the_o temple_n to_o perform_v the_o worship_n and_o popish_a jesuit_n which_o lurk_v common_o in_o king_n court_n and_o in_o the_o place_n of_o mighty_a man_n then_o see_v the_o devil_n be_v so_o painful_a to_o stop_v the_o course_n of_o the_o it_o behoove_v all_o christian_n not_o only_o to_o pray_v for_o themselves_o but_o see_v the_o devil_n labour_v the_o ruin_n of_o the_o church_n special_o in_o prevail_a with_o prince_n and_o great_a man_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o the_o good_a of_o god_n church_n and_o child_n and_o every_o member_n of_o it_o by_o name_n for_o king_n &_o queen_n &c_n &c_n &_o good_a reason_n be_v there_o that_o we_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o in_o the_o good_a and_o flourish_a estate_n of_o the_o church_n we_o all_o receive_v benefit_n by_o it_o and_o fare_v the_o better_a for_o it_o three_o if_o satan_n dare_v set_v upon_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o tempt_v he_o to_o idolatry_n and_o to_o worship_v the_o devil_n then_o much_o more_o will_v he_o be_v tempt_v we_o to_o the_o like_a sin_n and_o set_v upon_o true_a god_n the_o jew_n worship_v god_n the_o father_n but_o not_o by_o jesus_n christ_n who_o they_o deny_v the_o papist_n worship_n a_o false_a and_o counterfeit_a christ_n forge_v by_o themselves_o and_o never_o read_v of_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o they_o make_v he_o a_o saviour_n in_o part_n &_o a_o priest_n to_o be_v creator_n or_o the_o maker_n of_o his_o creator_n that_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o these_o three_o sort_n of_o people_n do_v not_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n but_o even_o the_o devil_n himself_o let_v we_o mark_v these_o 2_o principle_n first_o that_o all_o doctrine_n set_v down_o and_o invent_v by_o man_n concern_v god_n service_n and_o worship_n be_v against_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o devil_n so_o say_v paul_n 1_o tim._n 4._o 1._o 3._o that_o there_o shall_v come_v false_a teacher_n which_o shall_v teach_v doctrine_n of_o devil_n and_o what_o be_v these_o vers._n 3._o he_o say_v such_o as_o forbid_v worship_n of_o the_o devil_n not_o of_o god_n now_o by_o these_o two_o principle_n it_o appear_v that_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n perform_v by_o the_o turk_n and_o by_o the_o jew_n it_o be_v no_o worship_n of_o god_n but_o the_o worship_n of_o devil_n see_v both_o of_o they_o worship_n the_o father_n out_o of_o the_o son_n and_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n in_o popery_n it_o be_v no_o better_a than_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o devil_n see_v they_o worship_v god_n out_o of_o the_o true_a christ_n and_o have_v forge_v to_o themselves_o a_o false_a counterfeit_a christ._n and_o if_o paul_n may_v true_o affirm_v of_o the_o gentile_n that_o they_o worship_v not_o the_o true_a god_n but_o offer_v to_o devil_n then_o mnch_v more_o may_v it_o be_v avouch_v of_o that_o abominable_a sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n that_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o devil_n see_v it_o be_v more_o vile_a idolatry_n then_o that_o of_o the_o gentile_n now_o it_o will_v be_v say_v objection_n though_o the_o devil_n prevail_v thus_o with_o they_o yet_o he_o can_v prevail_v so_o with_o protestant_n neither_o can_v they_o be_v say_v to_o worship_v the_o devil_n answer_n i_o answer_v that_o in_o truth_n there_o be_v thousand_o of_o protestant_n in_o the_o world_n who_o do_v worship_v the_o devil_n for_o all_o those_o which_o do_v only_o in_o outward_a show_n profess_v these_o thing_n they_o do_v not_o love_n god_n neither_o do_v they_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o rest_n upon_o he_o as_o their_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o make_v the_o world_n their_o god_n and_o so_o worship_v the_o devil_n four_o by_o this_o practice_n of_o the_o devil_n we_o see_v those_o man_n confute_v who_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n can_v make_v a_o league_n with_o man_n as_o with_o witch_n conjurer_n etc._n etc._n for_o we_o read_v and_o know_v such_o thing_n have_v be_v do_v and_o here_o we_o have_v a_o manifest_a proof_n of_o it_o for_o the_o devil_n offer_v a_o league_n to_o christ_n there_o be_v nothing_o want_v but_o our_o saviour_n christ_n his_o consent_n and_o if_o sinful_a man_n have_v be_v in_o christ_n stead_n questionless_a there_o have_v be_v a_o league_n and_o for_o so_o great_a gain_n he_o will_v have_v the_o devil_n his_o service_n then_o say_v jesus_n unto_o he_o 10._o avoid_v satan_n etc._n etc._n now_o follow_v the_o answer_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ._n and_o first_o in_o christ_n answer_n mark_v in_o propound_v of_o it_o he_o use_v first_o a_o speech_n of_o indignation_n and_o of_o defiance_n to_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o offer_n avoid_v satan_n as_o though_o christ_n shall_v have_v say_v i_o have_v hear_v thou_o blaspheme_v both_o i_o and_o my_o father_n &_o have_v thus_o long_o suffer_v thou_o but_o i_o will_v suffer_v thou_o no_o it_o when_o ahab_n and_o jezabel_n be_v both_o wicked_a hear_v that_o naboth_n have_v blaspheme_v god_n they_o rend_v their_o clothes_n in_o token_n of_o sorrow_n so_o when_o hezechiah_n hear_v the_o blasphemy_n of_o rabshekah_n 1_o he_o rend_v his_o clothes_n and_o be_v very_o much_o grieve_v for_o it_o when_o david_n hear_v the_o gentile_n say_v 3._o where_o be_v now_o their_o god_n this_o blasphemous_a speech_n do_v great_o affect_v he_o so_o as_o his_o very_a tear_n be_v his_o drink_n and_o the_o bad_a speech_n of_o the_o man_n of_o sodom_n do_v much_o affect_v lot_n &_o vex_v his_o
