kind_n viz._n 1._o incentives_n and_o temptation_n from_o it_o that_o be_v apt_a to_o bring_v the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n into_o the_o evil_n of_o sin_n and_o offence_n againft_v god_n such_o as_o be_v evil_a example_n evil_a command_n evil_a counsel_n evil_a persuasion_n and_o solicitation_n 2._o the_o trouble_n and_o injury_n and_o vexation_n and_o persecution_n and_o oppression_n and_o calumny_n and_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_n that_o be_v inflict_v by_o they_o and_o the_o evil_a that_o arise_v from_o these_o be_v of_o two_o kind_n viz._n such_o as_o they_o immediate_o cause_n which_o be_v great_a uneasiness_n and_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n and_o again_o such_o as_o consequential_o arise_v from_o these_o namely_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n as_o impatience_n discontent_n unquietness_n of_o mind_n murmur_n against_o the_o divine_a providence_n doubt_n of_o let_v go_v our_o confidence_n in_o god_n distur_v unbelief_n and_o put_v forth_o our_o hand_n to_o iniquity_n to_o deliver_v ourselves_o from_o these_o inconvenience_n either_o by_o unlawful_a or_o forbid_a mean_n by_o sinful_a compliance_n with_o the_o sinful_a world_n by_o fall_v in_o with_o they_o to_o deliver_v ourselves_o from_o their_o oppression_n persecution_n or_o wrong_n by_o raise_v commotion_n engage_v in_o party_n and_o infinite_a more_o unhappy_a consequence_n and_o three_o there_o be_v man_n in_o this_o world_n as_o health_n of_o body_n comfort_n of_o friend_n and_o relation_n affluence_n or_o at_o least_o competency_n of_o wealth_n power_n honour_n applause_n good_a report_n and_o the_o like_a the_o danger_n that_o steal_v upon_o mankind_n in_o this_o condition_n be_v pride_n haughtiness_n of_o mind_n arrogance_n vainglory_n insolence_n oppression_n security_n contempt_n of_o other_o love_v of_o the_o world_n fear_v of_o death_n and_o desire_n of_o diversion_n from_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o luxury_n intemperance_n ambition_n covetousness_n neglect_n and_o forgetfulness_n and_o a_o low_a esteem_n of_o god_n the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o our_o duty_n 2._o adversity_n as_o sickness_n and_o disease_n poverty_n loss_n of_o friend_n and_o estate_n public_a or_o private_a disturbance_n or_o calamity_n and_o the_o like_a and_o though_o oftentimes_o these_o be_v occasion_v by_o the_o evil_a or_o malignant_a world_n yet_o many_o time_n they_o seem_v to_o come_v accidental_o and_o be_v apt_a to_o breed_v impatience_n discontent_n unquietness_n of_o mind_n distrust_v of_o providence_n murmur_a envy_n at_o the_o external_a felicity_n of_o other_o and_o that_o common_a discomposure_n which_o we_o ordinary_o find_v in_o ourselves_o and_o other_o upon_o like_a occasion_n iv._o the_o four_o considerable_a be_v what_o be_v this_o faith_n which_o thus_o overcome_v the_o world_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o deep_a real_a full_a sound_a persuasion_n of_o and_o assent_n unto_o those_o great_a truth_n reveal_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o they_o be_v true_o the_o word_n and_o will_n of_o the_o eternal_a god_n who_o be_v truth_n itself_o and_o can_v neither_o deceive_v nor_o be_v deceive_v and_o herein_o these_o two_o matter_n be_v considerable_a 1._o what_o be_v those_o divine_a truth_n which_o be_v real_o and_o sound_o believe_v do_v enable_v the_o victory_n over_o the_o world_n or_o the_o special_a object_n of_o that_o victorious_a faith_n 2._o what_o be_v that_o act_n of_o faith_n or_o belief_n of_o these_o excellent_a object_n which_o thus_o overcome_v the_o world_n 1._o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o although_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o divine_a truth_n be_v the_o adequate_a object_n of_o faith_n yet_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v certain_a special_a head_n or_o part_n of_o divine_a truth_n that_o have_v the_o great_a influence_n into_o this_o victory_n over_o the_o world_n i_o shall_v mention_v some_o of_o they_o namely_o 1._o that_o there_o be_v one_o most_o powerfyl_n wise_a gracious_a bountiful_a just_a and_o all-seeing_a god_n the_o author_n of_o all_o be_v that_o be_v present_a in_o
indeed_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v these_o write_n do_v not_o obscure_o speak_v their_o author_n be_v a_o most_o lively_a representation_n of_o he_o that_o be_v of_o his_o mind_n and_o soul_n and_o of_o that_o learning_n wisdom_n piety_n and_o virtue_n which_o be_v very_o eminent_a and_o conspicuous_a in_o he_o particular_o that_o of_o the_o great_a audit_n which_o i_o use_v to_o look_v upon_o as_o his_o very_a picture_n wherein_o represent_v the_o good_a steward_n pass_v his_o account_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o not_o to_o give_v a_o lively_a representation_n of_o himself_o as_o every_o character_n of_o a_o true_o wise_a and_o virtuous_a person_n must_v needs_o agree_v with_o he_o who_o be_v real_o such_o and_o they_o who_o be_v eminent_o such_o can_v hardly_o be_v unknown_a and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a that_o some_o even_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o work_n may_v discover_v the_o work_n man_n beside_o many_o other_o occasion_n of_o discovery_n which_o may_v happen_v but_o as_o i_o think_v this_o too_o weak_a and_o insufficient_a so_o i_o can_v not_o but_o think_v it_o altogether_o needless_a and_o unworthy_a both_o the_o excellent_a author_n and_o these_o his_o pious_a and_o excellent_a meditation_n to_o be_v make_v use_n of_o to_o that_o end_n and_o shall_v much_o rather_o have_v abstain_v from_o publish_v they_o at_o all_o than_o have_v rely_v upon_o such_o a_o shift_n if_o i_o have_v think_v that_o they_o have_v stand_v in_o any_o need_n thereof_o but_o as_o it_o be_v only_o their_o â—â—al_a worth_n and_o excellence_n and_o usefulness_n which_o move_v i_o to_o desire_v their_o publication_n so_o i_o be_v very_o persuade_v and_o as_o well_o assure_v as_o i_o can_v be_v in_o any_o write_n of_o my_o own_o and_o that_o not_o upon_o my_o own_o opinion_n only_o but_o upon_o the_o judgement_n of_o other_o also_o that_o nothing_o liable_a to_o exception_n do_v occur_v in_o they_o or_o any_o thing_n considerable_a that_o be_v questionable_a which_o have_v not_o other_o approve_a author_n who_o say_v the_o same_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o subject_n of_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v not_o like_a to_o afford_v much_o matter_n of_o that_o nature_n these_o be_v moral_a and_o practical_a thing_n whereas_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n matter_n of_o speculation_n and_o of_o curious_a i_o have_v almost_o say_v presumptuous_a and_o unnecessary_a if_o not_o undeterminable_a specntation_n which_o make_v the_o great_a stir_n and_o be_v the_o matter_n and_o occasion_n of_o great_a controversy_n especial_o among_o they_o of_o the_o reform_a religion_n and_o though_o these_o write_n never_o undergo_v the_o last_o hand_n or_o pencil_n of_o the_o judicious_a author_n and_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o that_o perfection_n which_o he_o can_v have_v give_v to_o they_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o complete_a as_o otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v yet_o if_o we_o consider_v they_o in_o themselves_o or_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o write_n which_o be_v daily_o publish_v even_o of_o learned_a man_n and_o publish_v by_o the_o author_n themselves_o these_o will_v be_v find_v to_o be_v such_o as_o may_v not_o only_o very_o well_o pass_v in_o the_o crowd_n but_o such_o as_o be_v of_o no_o vulgar_a or_o common_a strain_n the_o subject_n of_o they_o indeed_o be_v common_a theme_n but_o yet_o such_o as_o be_v of_o most_o weight_n and_o moment_n in_o the_o life_n of_o man_n and_o of_o great_a concernment_n as_o in_o nature_n those_o thing_n which_o be_v of_o great_a use_n and_o concernment_n be_v most_o common_a but_o the_o matter_n of_o his_o meditation_n upon_o these_o subject_n be_v not_o common_a for_o as_o he_o be_v a_o man_n that_o think_v close_o and_o deep_o of_o thing_n not_o after_o a_o common_a rate_n so_o his_o write_n his_o most_o ex_fw-la tempore_fw-la write_n have_v a_o certain_a genius_n and_o energy_n in_o they_o much_o above_o the_o common_a rate_n of_o writer_n and_o though_o these_o be_v write_v ex_fw-la tempore_fw-la and_o in_o such_o manner_n as_o have_v be_v say_v before_o yet_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n such_o as_o he_o have_v before_o well_o digest_v and_o as_o a_o scribe_n instruct_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n have_v treasure_v up_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o out_o of_o this_o good_a treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o the_o abundance_n of_o it_o be_v produce_v these_o good_a thing_n thing_n which_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o of_o great_a concern_n and_o most_o worth_a his_o serious_a consideration_n and_o have_v according_o weigh_v and_o consider_v and_o for_o the_o style_n it_o be_v suitable_a to_o the_o matter_n significant_a perspicuous_a and_o manly_a his_o word_n be_v spirit_n and_o life_n and_o carry_v evidence_n and_o demonstration_n with_o they_o moral_a and_o experimental_a demonstration_n vox_fw-la non_fw-la ex_fw-la ore_fw-la sed_fw-la ex_fw-la pectore_fw-la emissa_fw-la and_o if_o we_o take_v these_o write_n all_v together_o and_o weigh_v they_o due_o and_o candid_o without_o any_o vain_a humour_n of_o critical_a and_o pedantic_a censeriâ—usness_n we_o may_v therein_o no_o less_o observe_v the_o worth_n and_o excellence_n of_o their_o author_n especial_o consider_v in_o what_o manner_n they_o be_v write_v than_o in_o his_o more_o elaborate_a work_n and_o be_v write_v and_o publish_v in_o this_o manner_n they_o do_v more_o evident_o demonstrate_v the_o reality_n of_o his_o honest_a virtuous_a and_o pious_a principle_n than_o have_v they_o be_v design_v to_o be_v publish_v and_o be_v publish_v by_o himself_o which_o perhaps_o may_v render_v they_o not_o less_o acceptable_a to_o some_o reader_n not_o of_o the_o low_a rank_n so_o that_o consider_v the_o write_n themselves_o i_o can_v not_o think_v that_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n therein_o whether_o of_o matter_n or_o form_n which_o can_v render_v the_o publication_n of_o they_o injurious_a or_o prejudicial_a to_o the_o author_n in_o the_o least_o in_o any_o of_o the_o respect_n afore_o mention_v yet_o notwithstanding_o for_o the_o great_a security_n i_o think_v it_o may_v be_v fit_a and_o but_o just_a to_o give_v this_o true_a and_o ingenuous_a account_n both_o of_o the_o occasion_n and_o manner_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o of_o the_o publication_n of_o of_o they_o without_o his_o privity_n or_o knowledge_n and_o this_o i_o conceive_v may_v be_v a_o just_a and_o sufficient_a mean_n to_o secure_v the_o author_n against_o all_o exception_n as_o that_o which_o will_v whole_o acquit_v he_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o all_o reasonable_a man_n and_o transferr_v the_o blame_n if_o any_o shall_v be_v to_o myself_o which_o yet_o be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o i_o must_v have_v resolve_v to_o have_v undergo_v have_v they_o be_v my_o own_o write_n which_o i_o have_v publish_v it_o remain_v therefore_o only_o to_o consider_v this_o great_a truth_n whereof_o in_o the_o theory_n no_o man_n doubt_n be_v little_o consider_v or_o think_v upon_o by_o the_o most_o of_o mankind_n but_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o monition_n and_o remembrance_n of_o mortality_n the_o live_a lay_v 〈◊〉_d not_o to_o heart_n and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o buâ—â—ness_n that_o little_o concern_v they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o concern_v this_o inconsiderateness_n seem_v principal_o these_o 1._o that_o man_n be_v not_o willing_a to_o entertain_v this_o unwelcome_a thought_n of_o their_o own_o latter_a end_n the_o thought_n whereof_o be_v so_o unwelcome_a and_o troublesome_a a_o guest_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o blast_v and_o disparage_v all_o those_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o sense_n that_o this_o life_n afford_v whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o death_n itself_o be_v unwelcome_a when_o it_o draw_v near_o so_o the_o thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o become_v as_o unwelcome_a as_o the_o thing_n itself_o 2._o a_o vain_a foolish_a conceit_n that_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o latter_a end_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o presage_n and_o invitation_n of_o it_o and_o upon_o this_o account_n i_o have_v know_v many_o superstitious_o and_o foolish_o to_o forbear_v the_o make_n of_o their_o will_n because_o it_o seem_v to_o they_o ominous_a and_o a_o presage_n of_o death_n whereas_o this_o consideration_n though_o it_o fit_v and_o prepare_v man_n for_o death_n it_o do_v no_o way_n hasten_v or_o presage_v it_o 3._o a_o great_a difficulty_n that_o ordinary_o attend_v our_o humane_a condition_n to_o think_v otherwise_o concern_v our_o condition_n than_o what_o at_o present_a we_o feel_v and_o find_v we_o be_v now_o in_o health_n and_o we_o can_v hardly_o bring_v our_o self_n to_o think_v that_o a_o time_n must_v and_o will_v come_v wherein_o we_o shall_v be_v sick_a we_o be_v now_o in_o life_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v hardly_o cast_v our_o thought_n into_o such_o a_o mould_n to_o think_v we_o shall_v die_v and_o hence_o it_o be_v true_a as_o the_o common_a proverb_n be_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n so_o old_a but_o he_o think_v he_o shall_v live_v a_o year_n long_o it_o be_v true_a this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o mankind_n to_o put_v far_o from_o we_o the_o evil_a day_n and_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o but_o this_o our_o way_n be_v our_o folly_n and_o one_o of_o the_o great_a occasion_n of_o those_o other_o folly_n that_o common_o attend_v our_o life_n and_o therefore_o the_o great_a mean_n to_o care_v this_o folly_n and_o to_o make_v we_o wise_a be_v wise_o to_o consider_v our_o latter_a end_n this_o wisdom_n appear_v in_o those_o excellent_a effect_n it_o produce_v which_o be_v general_o these_o two_o 1._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o live_v well_o 2._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o die_v easy_o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o latter_a end_n do_v in_o no_o sort_n make_v our_o life_n the_o short_a but_o it_o be_v a_o great_a consider_v that_o certain_o i_o must_v die_v and_o i_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o why_o shall_v i_o commit_v those_o thing_n that_o if_o they_o hasten_v not_o my_o latter_a end_n yet_o they_o will_v make_v it_o more_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a by_o the_o reflection_n upon_o what_o i_o have_v do_v amiss_o i_o may_v die_v to_o morrow_n why_o shall_v i_o commit_v that_o evil_a that_o will_v
