now_o suppose_v this_o limner_n to_o have_v two_o son_n both_o excellent_o breed_v up_o in_o art_n and_o science_n etc._n etc._n but_o the_o one_o a_o rude_a debauch_a fellow_n rebellious_a to_o his_o father_n yet_o a_o man_n
of_o part_n and_o as_o he_o show_v his_o breed_n and_o education_n upon_o any_o subject_n he_o honour_v his_o father_n but_o the_o other_o son_n be_v dutiful_a love_v his_o parent_n make_v it_o his_o business_n to_o commend_v he_o to_o all_o you_o will_v say_v that_o this_o limner_n though_o he_o receive_v some_o honour_n from_o his_o mute_a and_o dead_a picture_n and_o some_o honour_n from_o his_o rude_a and_o rebellious_a son_n yet_o the_o dutiful_a son_n be_v he_o who_o bring_v most_o honour_n and_o repute_v to_o the_o father_n this_o be_v the_o case_n betwixt_o god_n and_o his_o creature_n god_n have_v make_v the_o sun_n the_o moon_n the_o star_n the_o earth_n the_o sea_n the_o whale_n the_o lion_n and_o elephant_n the_o eagle_n the_o little_a silkworm_n all_o these_o be_v piece_n of_o the_o divine_a workmanship_n all_o give_v honour_n and_o glory_n to_o god_n but_o it_o be_v do_v mute_o and_o passive_o the_o vile_a and_o wicked_a man_n of_o the_o world_n that_o be_v rebel_n against_o god_n yet_o give_v a_o glory_n to_o god_n the_o structure_n of_o their_o body_n the_o endowment_n of_o their_o mind_n honour_n god_n who_o make_v they_o and_o give_v they_o those_o excellent_a feature_n quality_n and_o endowment_n god_n use_v they_o some_o of_o their_o vile_a and_o malicious_a action_n to_o bring_v about_o his_o wise_a and_o glorious_a end_n but_o god_n do_v but_o as_o it_o be_v extort_v his_o glory_n from_o they_o but_o now_o the_o people_n of_o god_n out_o of_o choice_n and_o design_n and_o by_o a_o voluntary_a act_n and_o constant_a study_n give_v understand_v that_o the_o way_n all_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v mercy_n and_o truth_n towards_o his_o own_o people_n who_o can_v read_v the_o lovingkindness_n of_o the_o lord_n towards_o israel_n while_o they_o be_v in_o egypt_n serve_v at_o the_o brick-kilns_a and_o under_o their_o great_a oppression_n there_o but_o he_o who_o observe_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n thus_o work_v to_o make_v they_o willing_a to_o go_v out_o and_o take_v possession_n of_o the_o promise_a land_n he_o may_v understand_v this_o it_o be_v not_o every_o motion_n of_o providence_n but_o the_o issue_n of_o it_o that_o demonstrate_v all_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o be_v mercy_n and_o truth_n and_o this_o evince_v to_o we_o that_o a_o observation_n of_o the_o motion_n of_o divine_a come_v now_o to_o the_o application_n of_o what_o you_o have_v hear_v upon_o this_o argument_n this_o in_o the_o first_o place_n show_v we_o one_o great_a reason_n of_o that_o ignorance_n which_o be_v be_v the_o first_o precedent_n this_o be_v necessary_a that_o god_n may_v justify_v his_o promise_n of_o this_o nature_n you_o have_v such_o psal_n 128.1_o 2_o 3._o and_o in_o many_o other_o text_n of_o holy_a writ_n they_o may_v be_v necessary_a to_o uphold_v the_o interest_n of_o god_n in_o the_o world_n the_o world_n must_v sometime_o say_v very_o there_o be_v a_o reward_n for_o the_o righteous_a god_n own_o people_n shall_v sometime_o have_v healthy_a body_n numerous_a family_n plentiful_a comfort_n in_o their_o relation_n many_o left_a hand-mercy_n add_v to_o those_o spiritual_a blessing_n with_o which_o god_n have_v bless_v they_o all_o in_o jesus_n christ_n 2._o other_o now_o god_n do_v not_o reward_v this_o way_n but_o he_o reward_v they_o in_o their_o soul_n and_o inward_a man_n and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o constant_a reward_n of_o they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o there_o be_v a_o variety_n in_o these_o too_o god_n do_v not_o measure_v out_o the_o same_o kind_n nor_o the_o same_o proportion_n unto_o all_o some_o be_v bless_v with_o a_o quiet_a conscience_n possible_o they_o have_v not_o ecstasy_n of_o joy_n as_o other_o but_o their_o heart_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o and_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o usual_a reward_n of_o the_o man_n that_o work_v righteousness_n the_o work_n of_o righteousness_n shall_v be_v peace_n say_v the_o prophet_n isa_n 32.17_o if_o god_n bring_v they_o to_o a_o sickbed_n or_o into_o any_o other_o straight_o they_o can_v say_v with_o hezekiah_n 2_o king_n 20.3_o i_o beseech_v thou_o o_o lord_n remember_v i_o now_o how_o i_o have_v walk_v before_o thou_o in_o truth_n and_o with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n that_o be_v a_o upright_a sincere_a heart_n or_o with_o nehemiah_n 13_o 14._o remember_v great_a a_o torture_n to_o a_o sinner_n as_o this_o when_o he_o say_v unto_o his_o conscience_n be_v it_o peace_n and_o his_o conscience_n tell_v he_o what_o peace_n so_o long_o as_o thy_o drunkenness_n thy_o whoredom_n thy_o lie_n and_o oath_n and_o blasphemy_n thy_o cheat_a and_o cozen_v thy_o oppression_n and_o violence_n remain_v there_o be_v no_o peace_n to_o the_o wicked_a say_v my_o god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n there_o be_v nothing_o so_o refresh_v unto_o a_o spirit_n tire_v with_o the_o crossness_n of_o the_o world_n than_o to_o find_v a_o peace_n within_o himself_o now_o this_o be_v the_o general_a reward_n of_o the_o righteous_a man_n if_o he_o miss_v rapture_n and_o ecstasy_n of_o joy_n yet_o he_o come_v not_o short_a ordinary_o of_o a_o quiet_a and_o serenity_n of_o a_o waky_a and_o awaken_v conscience_n i_o know_v there_o be_v hour_n of_o melancholy_a and_o darkness_n and_o desertion_n to_o which_o the_o best_a of_o god_n people_n be_v expose_v but_o these_o be_v but_o rare_a example_n in_o comparison_n of_o those_o multitude_n of_o godly_a one_o that_o walk_v in_o some_o bless_a view_n of_o their_o own_o sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n some_o he_o reward_v in_o their_o inward_a man_n with_o rapture_n and_o ecstasy_n of_o god_n they_o know_v and_o be_v persuade_v that_o nothing_o shall_v separate_v they_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n they_o defy_v death_n and_o hell_n and_o challenge_v the_o fatal_a stroke_n which_o other_o tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o they_o complain_v of_o time_n and_o be_v it_o not_o for_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o the_o case_n will_v dismiss_v their_o soul_n of_o their_o prison_n and_o lie_v like_o man_n wait_v for_o a_o wind_n long_v for_o that_o happy_a gale_n that_o shall_v carry_v their_o soul_n into_o the_o wide_a sea_n of_o eternity_n but_o this_o be_v but_o the_o portion_n of_o a_o few_o and_o scarce_o the_o abide_a temper_n of_o they_o neither_o but_o such_o hour_n the_o people_n of_o god_n have_v have_v some_o again_o he_o reward_v inward_o with_o strength_n confirm_v habit_n of_o grace_n and_o contentment_n with_o their_o portion_n etc._n etc._n their_o outward_a man_n decrease_v but_o their_o inward_a man_n increase_v day_n by_o day_n they_o be_v poor_a in_o purse_n but_o rich_a in_o grace_n they_o have_v but_o little_a but_o they_o be_v content_a with_o what_o they_o have_v and_o tell_v all_o the_o world_n they_o have_v enough_o and_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o that_o as_o punishment_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v the_o great_a punishment_n so_o these_o spiritual_a reward_n be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o great_a reward_n which_o be_v matter_n of_o easy_a demonstration_n if_o we_o will_v but_o allow_v our_o soul_n to_o be_v our_o noble_a part_n and_o the_o jewel_n to_o be_v better_a than_o the_o cabinet_n whatsoever_o tend_v to_o the_o debase_v and_o ruine_v the_o soul_n must_v be_v the_o great_a evil_n and_o whatsoever_o conduce_v to_o its_o ennoble_n or_o felicity_n must_v be_v the_o great_a reward_n and_o good_a beside_o this_o spiritual_a judgement_n be_v the_o continual_a forerunner_n of_o such_o as_o be_v temporal_a and_o spiritual_a mercy_n draw_v after_o they_o at_o least_o a_o proportion_n and_o sufficiency_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n all_o these_o thing_n shall_v be_v add_v thing_n which_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v accompany_v salvation_n and_o make_v man_n meet_v for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n 3._o but_o god_n sometime_o reward_v his_o people_n with_o suffering_n this_o you_o may_v think_v a_o strange_a reward_n but_o yet_o a_o reward_n it_o be_v christ_n promise_v to_o the_o loser_n for_o he_o that_o they_o shall_v receive_v child_n house_n land_n with_o that_o apprehend_v not_o himself_o lose_v or_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o any_o salvation_n god_n therefore_o ordinary_o in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n lay_v the_o law_n to_o he_o sheweth_z him_z what_o god_n have_v require_v of_o he_o how_o much_o he_o be_v a_o debtor_n to_o god_n how_o much_o he_o lie_v open_a to_o wrath_n and_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o curse_n this_o let_v he_o see_v what_o need_n he_o have_v of_o salvation_n by_o a_o redeemer_n and_o induce_v he_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o go_v unto_o christ_n for_o life_n now_o this_o motion_n and_o work_n of_o providence_n as_o to_o particular_a soul_n bear_v a_o just_a proportion_n to_o god_n first_o revelation_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o world_n god_n first_o give_v unto_o adam_n a_o law_n of_o work_n and_o make_v a_o covenant_n with_o he_o and_o then_o permit_v he_o to_o violate_v this_o law_n to_o break_v this_o covenant_n and_o then_o discover_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o redemption_n which_o to_o this_o time_n lie_v hide_v with_o god_n although_o as_o to_o the_o paction_n of_o it_o it_o be_v eternal_a and_o hence_o also_o appear_v a_o easy_a answer_n to_o that_o question_n whether_o man_n and_o woman_n unregenerate_v be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n or_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n that_o all_o man_n since_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n be_v not_o under_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o under_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v out_o of_o doubt_n for_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n expire_v with_o adam_n fall_n but_o thus_o far_o they_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n viz._n that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n for_o they_o but_o by_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n which_o be_v a_o state_n sad_a and_o miserable_a enough_o it_o be_v that_o which_o no_o man_n in_o his_o lapse_v estate_n be_v able_a to_o do_v adam_n indeed_o may_v have_v do_v it_o make_v weak_a through_o our_o flesh_n that_o god_n himself_o have_v do_v send_v his_o son_n in_o the_o likeness_n of_o sinful_a flesh_n and_o condemn_a sin_n in_o the_o flesh_n that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v fulfil_v in_o we_o they_o have_v no_o part_n nor_o portion_n in_o this_o matter_n no_o state_n nor_o interest_n in_o christ_n but_o be_v without_o christ_n and_o consequent_o during_o their_o present_a state_n incapable_a of_o any_o lively_a hope_n but_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o have_v speak_v to_o this_o first_o difficulty_n and_o the_o inference_n be_v content_a to_o regulate_v our_o philosophy_n so_o far_o as_o it_o relate_v to_o god_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o word_n and_o not_o to_o think_v to_o crook_v the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o our_o philosophy_n many_o rough_a way_n will_v be_v make_v plain_a and_o matter_n of_o question_n quick_o render_v out_o of_o question_n i_o be_o speak_v to_o such_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d of_o as_o they_o many_o way_n contribute_v to_o the_o happiness_n of_o those_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v 1._o i_o say_v first_o as_o they_o predicate_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n justice_n and_o holiness_n perfection_n of_o spirituality_n and_o heavenly_a duty_n which_o god_n require_v of_o you_o but_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o those_o that_o be_v weak_a and_o because_o there_o be_v some_o piece_n of_o holiness_n which_o do_v more_o proper_o and_o immediate_o trend_a towards_o the_o reception_n of_o these_o gradual_a manifestation_n and_o the_o omission_n of_o which_o may_v in_o a_o more_o peculiar_a and_o special_a manner_n hinder_v the_o reception_n of_o they_o and_o provoke_v god_n to_o deny_v they_o let_v i_o open_v this_o general_n in_o some_o few_o particular_n 1._o first_o take_v heed_n of_o all_o wilful_a sin_v for_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o with-drawing_n of_o these_o divine_a influence_n as_o punishment_n of_o sin_n as_o undoubted_o sometime_o they_o be_v it_o be_v hard_o to_o say_v what_o wilful_a sin_v god_n may_v not_o thus_o punish_v david_n sin_n of_o murder_n and_o adultery_n be_v act_n of_o unright_a ousness_n towards_o man_n yet_o god_n punish_v they_o in_o this_o manner_n as_o we_o may_v gather_v from_o his_o penitential_a psalm_n there_o be_v no_o sort_n of_o sin_n that_o i_o know_v but_o may_v for_o a_o time_n separate_v betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v he_o to_o hide_v his_o face_n from_o it_o that_o christian_a therefore_o that_o will_v have_v these_o manifestation_n of_o god_n unto_o he_o these_o abiding_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n with_o he_o must_v be_v holy_a in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n have_v a_o respect_n to_o all_o god_n commandment_n as_o well_o those_o of_o the_o second_o table_n as_o those_o of_o the_o first_o conscience_n may_v check_v and_o reflect_v sour_o upon_o the_o soul_n for_o any_o of_o they_o and_o where_o that_o do_v so_o reflect_v and_o check_v there_o will_v be_v little_a peace_n and_o comfort_n little_a life_n and_o vigour_n unto_o duty_n little_a growth_n and_o progress_n in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n herein_o therefore_o exercise_v yourselves_o to_o keep_v a_o conscience_n
