receive_v any_o foil_n at_o his_o hand_n which_o be_v a_o point_n of_o singular_a comfort_n to_o god_n church_n and_o child_n for_o be_v christ_n jesus_n able_a in_o this_o low_a and_o base_a estate_n of_o a_o servant_n be_v disaduantage_v also_o by_o a_o desert_n place_n and_o bodily_a hunger_n be_v he_o then_o i_o say_v able_a to_o encounter_v with_o satan_n and_o to_o overcome_v he_o in_o his_o most_o violent_a and_o subtle_a assault_n then_o how_o much_o more_o be_v he_o now_o able_a even_o in_o all_o his_o member_n to_o give_v satan_n the_o foil_n have_v spoil_v he_o in_o his_o death_n see_v he_o be_v advance_v to_o the_o throne_n of_o majesty_n and_o glory_n and_o set_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o his_o father_n have_v a_o name_n above_o all_o name_n give_v unto_o he_o at_o which_o every_o knee_n shall_v bow_v both_o of_o thing_n in_o heaven_n and_o in_o the_o earth_n and_o under_o the_o earth_n we_o therefore_o may_v now_o say_v with_o that_o loud_a voice_n 10._o now_o be_v salvation_n in_o heaven_n and_o strength_n and_o power_n and_o the_o kingdom_n of_o our_o god_n and_o the_o power_n of_o his_o christ_n for_o the_o accuser_n of_o the_o brethren_n be_v cast_v down_o the_o second_o point_n here_o note_v be_v whence_o christ_n borrow_v his_o answer_n namely_o from_o the_o scripture_n it_o be_v write_v it_o have_v be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o christ_n be_v flight_n the_o use_n i._o this_o fact_n of_o christ_n do_v discover_v and_o condemn_v the_o damnable_a practice_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o lock_n up_o the_o word_n of_o god_n from_o their_o people_n in_o a_o unknowen_a tongue_n and_o commend_v unto_o they_o for_o their_o defence_n against_o spiritual_a enemy_n other_o device_n of_o their_o own_o as_o holy_a water_n cross_v cross_n etc._n etc._n which_o they_o high_o commend_v as_o mean_n of_o special_a strength_n and_o force_n to_o vanquish_v the_o devil_n when_o as_o indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o only_a true_a and_o trusty_a weapon_n whereof_o while_o they_o deprive_v their_o people_n they_o send_v they_o forth_o naked_a and_o unarmed_a to_o encounter_v with_o satan_n second_o here_o also_o behold_v the_o miserable_a estate_n of_o all_o those_o that_o either_o through_o covetousness_n or_o any_o other_o profaneness_n be_v draw_v to_o neglect_v or_o contemn_v the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n their_o case_n be_v most_o fearful_a for_o they_o cast_v away_o those_o weapon_n whereby_o they_o shall_v defend_v themselves_o against_o the_o devil_n and_o quench_v all_o his_o fiery_a dart_n and_o so_o betray_v their_o own_o soul_n into_o his_o hand_n and_o doubtless_o all_o contemner_n and_o neglecter_n of_o the_o word_n be_v guilty_a of_o their_o own_o damnation_n because_o god_n have_v give_v we_o his_o word_n for_o our_o defence_n and_o for_o the_o confound_a of_o satan_n so_o as_o without_o guilt_n of_o wilful_a murder_n not_o of_o our_o body_n but_o of_o our_o soul_n we_o can_v neglect_v this_o heavenly_a weapon_n three_o hereby_o we_o may_v see_v the_o cause_n why_o sin_n so_o much_o abound_v in_o all_o estate_n every_o where_o namely_o the_o want_n of_o love_n unto_o &_o knowledge_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n whereupon_o the_o most_o be_v ignorant_a of_o it_o or_o else_o know_v not_o how_o to_o handle_v this_o spiritual_a weapon_n whereby_o satan_n be_v resist_v and_o foil_v hosea_n 4._o 2._o the_o lord_n complain_v of_o lie_v swear_v kill_a steal_v and_o whore_v yea_o of_o blood_n touch_v blood_n and_o the_o cause_n be_v lay_v down_o in_o the_o first_o manner_n to_o beware_v of_o presumption_n this_o be_v the_o common_a snare_n of_o the_o devil_n wherein_o he_o entangle_v many_o a_o soul_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o he_o oft_o prevail_v by_o bring_v man_n to_o desperation_n but_o a_o thousand_o perish_v through_o presumption_n almost_o for_o one_o by_o desperation_n for_o despair_n be_v a_o painful_a thing_n to_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o as_o the_o devil_n know_v well_o do_v sometime_o turn_v to_o a_o man_n more_o sound_a conversion_n but_o to_o presume_v be_v sweet_a and_o pleasant_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o most_o agreeable_a to_o man_n corrupt_a nature_n in_o regard_n whereof_o we_o ought_v to_o keep_v out_o heart_n with_o all_o watch_n &_o ward_n as_o david_n pray_v keep_v thy_o servant_n from_o presumptuous_a sin_n ps._n 19_o 13._o again_o observe_v the_o order_n of_o satan_n temptation_n by_o compare_v this_o with_o the_o former_a there_o he_o seek_v to_o overthrow_v christ_n faith_n &_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o unto_o another_o and_o look_v as_o he_o deal_v here_o with_o christ_n the_o head_n so_o do_v he_o continue_v towards_o all_o his_o member_n if_o he_o can_v bring_v they_o to_o one_o extreme_a he_o will_v assay_v they_o hard_o in_o the_o other_o if_o he_o can_v bring_v a_o man_n to_o covetousness_n and_o keep_v his_o heart_n to_o the_o love_n of_o money_n then_o let_v he_o beware_v of_o riot_n and_o prodigality_n be_v a_o man_n give_v to_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n and_o a_o length_n be_v deprive_v of_o they_o then_o let_v he_o beware_v the_o devil_n swallow_v he_o not_o up_o with_o overmuch_o grief_n as_o he_o seek_v to_o do_v with_o the_o 11._o incestuous_a person_n of_o corinth_n do_v a_o man_n come_v to_o love_v religion_n that_o former_o be_v give_v to_o looseness_n of_o life_n then_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a the_o devil_n will_v carry_v he_o to_o schism_n &_o heresy_n the_o devil_n can_v abide_v that_o a_o man_n shall_v keep_v the_o mean_a according_a to_o god_n word_n isaiah_n 30._o 21._o he_o will_v have_v our_o first_o parent_n to_o be_v god_n or_o no_o body_n gene._n 3._o 5._o and_o so_o still_o he_o labour_v to_o bring_v a_o man_n to_o some_o extreme_a we_o therefore_o in_o all_o estate_n during_o life_n must_v labour_v to_o keep_v the_o golden_a mean_n as_o christ_n here_o do_v neither_o doubt_v on_o the_o one_o hand_n nor_o presume_v on_o the_o other_o but_o retain_v still_o that_o bless_a faith_n whereby_o his_o bless_a heart_n be_v firm_o settle_v in_o these_o assault_n thus_o much_o for_o satan_n drift_n now_o come_v to_o the_o word_n of_o this_o temptation_n if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n then_o cast_v thyself_o down_o that_o be_v show_v by_o this_o miracle_n that_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n mark_v here_o the_o devil_n persuade_v he_o not_o to_o show_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o doctrine_n in_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o ministry_n but_o cast_v thyself_o down_o show_v a_o miracle_n wherein_o we_o may_v behold_v the_o very_a lively_a image_n of_o that_o natural_a disposition_n which_o be_v in_o all_o impenitent_a person_n they_o affect_v christ_n miracle_n but_o they_o care_v not_o for_o his_o doctrine_n herod_n long_v to_o see_v christ_n 8._o and_o be_v glad_a of_o his_o come_n when_o pilate_n send_v he_o yet_o not_o to_o hear_v his_o doctrine_n for_o that_o he_o can_v not_o endure_v else_o he_o will_v not_o have_v imprison_v john_n and_o also_o put_v he_o to_o death_n but_o he_o hope_v to_o see_v a_o miracle_n the_o wicked_a jew_n desire_v a_o sign_n that_o put_v christ_n to_o death_n for_o his_o doctrine_n yet_o if_o be_v will_v come_v down_o from_o the_o cross_n and_o so_o miraculous_o save_v himself_o than_o they_o will_v believe_v mark_n 15._o 32._o and_o this_o venom_n of_o the_o old_a serpent_n have_v poison_v the_o heart_n of_o many_o student_n in_o the_o scripture_n who_o care_v not_o at_o all_o to_o ground_n themselves_o in_o the_o fundamental_a point_n of_o religion_n as_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o yet_o be_v wonder_a eager_a after_o quidditle_n and_o difficulty_n wherein_o may_v appear_v some_o outward_a show_n of_o wit_n and_o learning_n like_o the_o hypocritical_a pharisy_n that_o will_v tithe_v mint_n and_o rue_v and_o yet_o pass_v over_o judgement_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n luk._n 11._o 42._o and_o the_o cause_n hereof_o be_v the_o want_n of_o sound_a grace_n for_o natural_a man_n indeed_o can_v not_o savour_v the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n crucify_v seem_v foolishness_n unto_o they_o second_o the_o devil_n take_v occasion_n of_o his_o former_a temptation_n from_o christ_n infirmity_n of_o hunger_n but_o perceive_v christ_n sure_a faith_n in_o his_o father_n word_n by_o his_o gracious_a answer_n to_o that_o assault_n here_o he_o borrow_v his_o temptation_n from_o that_o profession_n of_o his_o faith_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v thou_o seem_v to_o be_v resolve_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o thy_o father_n word_n that_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o if_o that_o be_v true_a indeed_o then_o show_v it_o by_o this_o miracle_n cast_v thyself_o down_o here_o then_o behold_v another_o trick_n of_o satan_n if_o he_o can_v prevail_v by_o assault_n draw_v from_o our_o infirmity_n then_o will_v he_o assay_v we_o by_o temptation_n draw_v from_o god_n good_a gift_n and_o grace_n in_o we_o if_o he_o can_v keep_v a_o man_n in_o ignorance_n that_o have_v good_a gift_n of_o wit_n &_o memory_n then_o will_v he_o seek_v from_o his_o knowledge_n to_o puff_n he_o up_o with_o pride_n and_o so_o mingle_v his_o poison_n with_o god_n good_a gift_n do_v cause_n many_o a_o one_o to_o become_v a_o bane_n to_o god_n church_n that_o otherwise_o may_v have_v prove_v a_o excellent_a instrument_n therein_o as_o may_v easy_o be_v show_v in_o sundry_a particular_n three_o restrain_v here_o mark_v how_o satan_n malice_n be_v restrain_v and_o his_o power_n limit_v by_o god_n permission_n he_o be_v able_a to_o carry_v christ_n from_o the_o wilderness_n to_o jerusalem_n and_o there_o to_o set_v he_o in_o a_o most_o dangerous_a place_n on_o a_o wing_n of_o the_o temple_n the_o thing_n he_o now_o desire_v be_v his_o destruction_n by_o cast_v down_o head_n long_o but_o that_o he_o can_v not_o do_v and_o therefore_o persuade_v christ_n to_o cast_v himself_o down_o wherein_o we_o see_v the_o special_a providence_n of_o god_n over_o christ_n jesus_n in_o all_o these_o temptation_n restrain_v his_o enemy_n in_o the_o thing_n he_o most_o desire_a and_o the_o same_o providence_n do_v he_o still_o continue_v over_o his_o church_n for_o the_o effectual_a preservation_n of_o christ_n member_n in_o all_o their_o temptation_n the_o devil_n unwearied_a desire_n &_o drift_n be_v to_o bring_v contention_n hurliburly_n and_o ruin_n into_o all_o society_n in_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n therefore_o the_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n of_o these_o be_v and_o so_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v a_o notable_a fruit_n of_o god_n bless_a providence_n restrain_v the_o spite_n and_o malice_n of_o satan_n again_o hence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o in_o temptation_n satan_n can_v go_v beyond_o the_o permission_n of_o
