now_o to_o sum_n up_o all_o in_o a_o word_n which_o have_v be_v speak_v and_o to_o bring_v it_o brief_o to_o a_o head_n we_o have_v hear_v that_o there_o be_v many_o thought_n which_o many_o people_n be_v exercise_v withal_o thought_n of_o perplexity_n and_o distraction_n and_o that_o even_o to_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o concern_v their_o own_o particular_n as_o concern_v the_o good_a of_o the_o public_a and_o church_n of_o god_n and_o that_o these_o be_v comfort_n from_o god_n which_o do_v not_o only_o satisfy_v but_o also_o delight_v in_o such_o condition_n now_o what_o remain_v to_o ourselves_o but_o that_o we_o observe_v and_o take_v notice_n of_o these_o truth_n and_o improve_v they_o to_o own_o best_a advantage_n we_o see_v here_o our_o duty_n and_o privilege_n both_o at_o once_o and_o the_o one_o follow_v from_o the_o other_o forasmuch_o as_o there_o be_v comfort_n from_o god_n to_o his_o servant_n in_o their_o great_a uncertainty_n and_o distraction_n of_o thought_n therefore_o it_o lie_v upon_o we_o so_o to_o carry_v and_o to_o demean_v ourselves_o as_o that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o this_o comfort_n and_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n especial_o which_o do_v much_o conduce_v and_o tend_v to_o this_o purpose_n the_o one_o be_v the_o improve_n and_o lay_v out_o our_o thought_n for_o god_n and_o the_o other_o be_v the_o refer_v and_o commit_v of_o our_o thought_n to_o he_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o either_o of_o these_o rule_n and_o observation_n still_o we_o find_v this_o truth_n make_v good_a unto_o we_o that_o in_o the_o multitude_n of_o thought_n within_o we_o his_o comfort_n delight_v my_o soul_n first_o we_o must_v be_v careful_a to_o lay_v out_o our_o thought_n for_o god_n we_o must_v remember_v this_o as_o we_o desire_v to_o have_v thought_n of_o comfort_n so_o we_o must_v be_v careful_a to_o have_v thought_n of_o improvement_n which_o will_v reflect_v so_o much_o the_o more_o sweet_o upon_o we_o alas_o what_o be_v these_o what_o be_v we_o able_a to_o think_v of_o for_o he_o who_o of_o ourselves_o can_v think_v nothing_o or_o if_o we_o can_v what_o need_v we_o to_o do_v it_o he_o be_v absolute_a and_o all-sufficient_a in_o himself_o it_o be_v true_a he_o be_v please_v to_o desire_v thus_o much_o from_o we_o which_o we_o shall_v not_o think_v much_o to_o yield_v unto_o he_o as_o god_n have_v give_v the_o more_o shall_v we_o still_o be_v careful_a to_o do_v for_o he_o and_o set_v our_o thought_n on_o work_n how_o to_o be_v useful_a and_o serviceable_a to_o he_o in_o the_o place_n in_o which_o he_o set_v we_o and_o that_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o as_o his_o thought_n be_v so_o strong_o exercise_v about_o ourselves_o whether_o as_o consider_v in_o our_o own_o person_n or_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o land_n and_o nation_n in_o which_o we_o live_v whereunto_o i_o may_v fit_o apply_v that_o place_n of_o the_o prophet_n jeremiah_n jer._n 29.11_o i_o know_v the_o thought_n that_o i_o think_v of_o his_o he_o think_v of_o we_o when_o we_o do_v not_o think_v of_o he_o nor_o think_v of_o his_o think_n of_o we_o nay_o sometime_o when_o we_o have_v thought_n against_o he_o or_o not_o every_o way_n so_o full_a for_o he_o all_o this_o shall_v persuade_v we_o and_o engage_v we_o in_o this_o direct_n of_o our_o thought_n to_o he_o whereof_o we_o now_o speak_v and_o that_o in_o order_n question_n that_o all_o that_o come_v to_o heaven_n they_o shall_v have_v enough_o and_o shall_v have_v nothing_o want_v to_o they_o but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v some_o that_o shall_v have_v more_o than_o other_o according_a as_o they_o have_v either_o do_v or_o suffer_v more_o in_o this_o life_n those_o that_o have_v do_v or_o suffer_v more_o for_o god_n they_o shall_v present_o enjoy_v and_o receive_v more_o from_o god_n the_o degree_n of_o glory_n shall_v be_v proportinable_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o grace_n this_o among_o other_o consideration_n may_v serve_v so_o much_o the_o more_o to_o enlarge_v our_o desire_n after_o it_o and_o teach_v we_o to_o endeavour_v after_o the_o great_a perfection_n of_o holiness_n that_o we_o be_v possible_o capable_a of_o can_v etc._n etc._n he_o speak_v it_o of_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o ministerial_a authority_n among_o they_o which_o he_o signify_v to_o be_v in_o he_o not_o for_o himself_o so_o much_o as_o for_o they_o nor_o for_o his_o own_o respect_n and_o advancement_n but_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o good_a of_o the_o church_n and_o the_o advancement_n of_o the_o truth_n which_o be_v chief_o and_o especial_o and_o principal_o regard_v by_o he_o and_o therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o be_v more_o sharp_a and_o severe_a with_o they_o whether_o in_o the_o reprove_v or_o punish_v of_o offender_n he_o do_v still_o desire_v herein_o to_o approve_v himself_o as_o one_o that_o aim_v at_o justice_n and_o piety_n and_o virtue_n in_o that_o administration_n as_o the_o main_a ground_n and_o end_n for_o which_o that_o power_n be_v indeed_o bestow_v upon_o he_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a and_o genuine_a and_o direct_a sense_n of_o these_o word_n as_o they_o here_o lie_v before_o we_o again_o twofold_a first_o as_o consider_v in_o the_o office_n and_o ministry_n itself_o and_o second_o as_o consider_v in_o the_o person_n namely_o himself_o and_o his_o fellow-apostle_n and_o minister_n which_o be_v then_o the_o subject_n of_o it_o for_o the_o first_o viz._n the_o office_n and_o ministry_n itself_o there_o be_v here_o in_o these_o word_n a_o limitation_n fasten_v upon_o that_o while_o it_o be_v say_v we_o can_v do_v nothing_o etc._n etc._n and_o thereby_o signify_v thus_o much_o that_o ministerial_a authority_n be_v not_o extend_v beyond_o christian_a edification_n the_o apostle_n can_v do_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v consonant_a and_o consistent_a with_o religiou_n whether_o consider_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o or_o the_o practice_n this_o be_v that_o which_o be_v here_o exhibit_v to_o we_o and_o it_o be_v agreeable_a likewise_o to_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o in_o 2_o cor._n 10.8_o for_o though_o i_o shall_v boast_v more_o of_o our_o authority_n which_o the_o lora_n have_v give_v we_o for_o edification_n and_o not_o for_o your_o destruction_n this_o be_v the_o end_n for_o which_o that_o authority_n which_o he_o have_v be_v this_o be_v true_a as_o to_o either_o part_n of_o the_o ministry_n whether_o of_o doctrine_n or_o censure_n first_o if_o we_o take_v it_o of_o doctrine_n that_o be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o this_o minister_n they_o have_v a_o didactical_a authority_n and_o authority_n of_o teach_v god_n have_v commit_v this_o unto_o they_o and_o to_o they_o alone_o there_o be_v none_o have_v authority_n of_o dispense_n the_o mystery_n of_o faith_n and_o religion_n but_o those_o only_o who_o be_v especial_o call_v and_o design_v thereunto_o but_o yet_o this_o authority_n even_o to_o such_o and_o such_o person_n it_o be_v limit_v and_o restrain_v to_o the_o truth_n we_o can_v here_o do_v nothing_o against_o the_o truth_n but_o for_o the_o truth_n minister_n have_v not_o power_n to_o impose_v any_o doctrine_n or_o maxim_n whatsoever_o upon_o the_o people_n to_o be_v believe_v by_o they_o but_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o will_n of_o god_n lay_v down_o in_o of_o all_o serve_v as_o a_o good_a discovery_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o any_o ministry_n and_o the_o authority_n of_o it_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v if_o it_o be_v such_o as_o be_v of_o god_n and_o be_v true_o give_v of_o he_o then_o consider_v how_o far_o forth_o it_o keep_v close_o to_o this_o present_a rule_n which_o we_o have_v now_o before_o we_o whether_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o doctrine_n it_o be_v the_o ministry_n only_o of_o truth_n or_o whether_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o censure_n it_o be_v the_o dispensation_n only_o of_o righteousness_n and_o christian_a benefit_n and_o edification_n of_o christ_n and_o close_v with_o it_o forasmuch_o as_o in_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o it_o consider_v in_o itself_o and_o according_a to_o god_n own_o institution_n however_o sometime_o it_o may_v be_v abase_v and_o pervert_v by_o man_n it_o be_v for_o edification_n and_o not_o for_o destruction_n not_o for_o man_n hurt_n or_o prejudice_n but_o their_o advantage_n as_o the_o apostle_n will_v it_o all_o we_o can_v again_o on_o the_o other_o side_n whatever_o may_v prove_v to_o the_o contrary_a and_o be_v a_o hindrance_n and_o impediment_n thereunto_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v shy_a and_o wary_a of_o we_o shall_v not_o stretch_v ourselves_o beyond_o our_o measure_n and_o rule_v and_o line_n in_o
this_o particular_a we_o shall_v do_v nothing_o against_o the_o truth_n but_o for_o the_o truth_n for_o a_o close_a and_o conclusion_n of_o all_o at_o this_o present_a time_n we_o may_v further_o advance_v it_o but_o the_o apostle_n paul_n here_o be_v of_o another_o mind_n he_o be_v not_o shy_a or_o afraid_a here_o to_o tell_v they_o of_o such_o a_o truth_n as_o do_v in_o a_o manner_n restrain_v he_o and_o qualify_v his_o authority_n over_o they_o he_o tell_v they_o here_o plain_o hat_n he_o can_v not_o do_v as_o well_o as_o what_o he_o can_v we_o can_v do_v nothing_o against_o be_v not_o as_o it_o be_v the_o fashion_n especial_o of_o many_o of_o our_o new_a upstart_n nowadays_o to_o be_v always_o treat_v of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o argument_n and_o still_o upon_o the_o same_o song_n that_o if_o you_o know_v who_o be_v the_o preacher_n you_o may_v guess_v what_o will_v be_v the_o sermon_n before_o you_o hear_v it_o run_v about_o city_n and_o country_n with_o two_o especial_o in_o temptation_n of_o itself_o it_o be_v unable_a to_o do_v minister_n may_v be_v able_a to_o bear_v witness_n of_o the_o promise_n in_o general_a but_o christ_n he_o be_v able_a to_o glory_n of_o god_n by_o we_o and_o what_o be_v there_o say_v of_o the_o promise_n it_o hold_v good_a of_o the_o whole_a word_n at_o large_a it_o be_v no_o other_o than_o truth_n itself_o as_o proceed_v from_o he_o who_o name_n be_v faithful_a and_o true_a second_o from_o the_o universality_n of_o it_o christ_n faithfulness_n be_v see_v in_o this_o likewise_o not_o only_o in_o deliver_v the_o truth_n but_o the_o whole_a truth_n there_o be_v many_o witness_n sometime_o in_o the_o world_n who_o be_v partial_a and_o imperfect_a in_o their_o testimony_n somewhat_o they_o will_v be_v content_a to_o witness_v but_o other_o thing_n they_o will_v desire_v to_o conceal_v this_o be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o unfaithfulness_n but_o now_o with_o christ_n it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o he_o reveal_v and_o declare_v whatsoever_o be_v to_o be_v reveal_v by_o he_o not_o reserve_v or_o conceal_v any_o thing_n joh._n 8.26_o he_o that_o have_v send_v i_o be_v true_a and_o i_o speak_v to_o to_o do_v the_o same_o still_o his_o hand_n be_v not_o shorten_v that_o it_o can_v save_v nor_o his_o ear_n heavy_a that_o it_o can_v hear_v power_n and_o strength_n be_v he_o he_o be_v the_o rock_n of_o age_n our_o almighty_a god_n and_o mighty_a to_o save_v you_o know_v a_o spring_n or_o fountain_n it_o issue_v out_o stream_n continual_o in_o omne_fw-la volubilis_fw-la as_o you_o see_v water_n be_v enough_o and_o sufficient_a for_o they_o now_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v a_o person_n of_o skill_n as_o man_n be_v for_o their_o part_n skilful_a to_o destroy_v so_o be_v he_o for_o his_o part_n skilful_a to_o deliver_v and_o then_o further_o here_o be_v a_o argument_n likewise_o from_o the_o great_a to_o the_o less_o he_o that_o have_v do_v the_o one_o he_o can_v do_v the_o other_o too_o he_o that_o have_v deliver_v from_o so_o great_a a_o death_n he_o can_v much_o more_o deliver_v from_o a_o less_o or_o small_a danger_n where_o it_o happen_v unto_o we_o and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o foundation_n of_o this_o confidence_n viz._n god_n ability_n and_o power_n second_o there_o be_v in_o god_n a_o perpetuity_n of_o affection_n too_o it_o be_v of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n that_o succession_n and_o

will_v yet_o further_o deliver_v we_o as_o it_o be_v here_o in_o this_o present_a text_n before_o we_o and_o thus_o do_v we_o see_v the_o ground_n of_o this_o present_a point_n the_o improvement_n of_o it_o may_v be_v in_o a_o double_a way_n of_o application_n either_o in_o reference_n first_o of_o all_o to_o private_a person_n in_o particular_a or_o else_o second_o to_o the_o whole_a church_n and_o state_n consider_v in_o general_n either_o of_o these_o may_v make_v a_o very_a profitable_a use_n and_o improvement_n of_o this_o point_n which_o we_o now_o have_v be_v here_o upon_o all_o this_o while_n and_o to_o bring_v it_o home_o a_o little_a to_o each_o first_o for_o our_o own_o private_a and_o particular_a we_o shall_v learn_v from_o this_o present_a doctrine_n to_o treasure_n up_o unto_o ourselves_o ground_n of_o expectation_n of_o more_o from_o god_n in_o a_o way_n of_o deliverance_n and_o preservation_n by_o consider_v what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o we_o heretofore_o in_o like_a exigency_n and_o strait_n we_o may_v make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o all_o the_o several_a passage_n and_o occurrence_n and_o turn_n of_o our_o life_n thus_o the_o mariner_n or_o traveller_n by_o sea_n may_v reason_v god_n have_v deliver_v i_o in_o such_o a_o storm_n and_o such_o a_o tempest_n i_o be_o now_o in_o the_o same_o lawful_a way_n and_o he_o will_v deliver_v i_o again_o thus_o the_o warrior_n and_o soldier_n may_v reason_v god_n have_v deliver_v i_o in_o such_o a_o battle_n and_o in_o such_o a_o battle_n and_o he_o will_v also_o deliver_v i_o in_o this_o which_o be_v undertake_v upon_o the_o same_o warrantable_a ground_n as_o the_o former_a be_v thus_o the_o travel_a woman_n may_v reason_v god_n have_v deliver_v i_o of_o such_o a_o child_n and_o such_o a_o child_n when_o i_o be_v in_o as_o great_a anguish_n and_o extremity_n i_o be_o now_o in_o the_o same_o way_n of_o his_o providence_n and_o i_o trust_v he_o will_v yet_o deliever_n i_o still_o thus_o shall_v we_o still_o upon_o all_o occasion_n get_v ground_n as_o it_o be_v upon_o god_n and_o fortify_v ourselves_o against_o distrust_n from_o the_o consideration_n of_o his_o former_a goodness_n towards_o we_o the_o first_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o thing_n second_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o fountain_n and_o three_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o experiment_n first_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o that_o be_v a_o natural_a sweetness_n and_o such_o as_o be_v competent_a to_o sense_n which_o any_o natural_a or_o carnal_a man_n may_v find_v and_o have_v in_o the_o deliverance_n he_o partake_v of_o second_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o fountain_n or_o principle_n that_o be_v such_o a_o sweetness_n as_o consist_v in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n and_o such_o and_o such_o blessing_n as_o flow_v in_o to_o we_o from_o this_o ground_n and_o conveyance_n of_o they_o to_o we_o three_o we_o have_v the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o experiment_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o those_o mercy_n and_o deliverance_n which_o at_o present_a we_o partake_v of_o serve_v to_o teach_v we_o to_o expect_v as_o much_o again_o at_o another_o time_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o we_o here_o now_o speak_v of_o every_o new_a blessing_n and_o deliverance_n it_o carry_v another_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o it_o and_o be_v a_o pledge_n and_o forerunner_n of_o more_o which_z according_o we_o shall_v look_v for_o from_o it_o as_o soldier_n which_o have_v get_v one_o victory_n they_o be_v hearten_v to_o make_v account_n of_o another_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v here_o with_o we_o o_o passi_fw-la graviora_fw-la dabit_fw-la deus_fw-la his_fw-la quoque_fw-la finem_fw-la we_o shall_v learn_v from_o hence_o by_o answer_v god_n in_o his_o goodness_n towards_o we_o in_o our_o obedience_n and_o as_o we_o have_v obey_v former_o so_o to_o obey_v still_o but_o here_o it_o may_v be_v haply_o interpose_v that_o this_o do_v not_o always_o seem_v to_o hold_v so_o good_a as_o for_o we_o to_o found_v this_o confidence_n thereupon_o we_o find_v by_o many_o experience_n that_o god_n do_v deliver_v his_o people_n from_o some_o evil_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o deliver_v they_o from_o other_o from_o this_o sickness_n and_o not_o from_o that_o from_o this_o danger_n and_o not_o from_o that_o from_o these_o enemy_n and_o not_o from_o other_o yea_o for_o this_o very_a instance_n here_o in_o the_o text_n though_o paul_n be_v deliver_v from_o this_o great_a danger_n in_o asia_n and_o escape_v death_n at_o this_o time_n yet_o afterward_o he_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o his_o enemy_n and_o take_v away_o by_o they_o how_o can_v we_o then_o make_v former_a deliverance_n to_o be_v ground_n for_o trust_v and_o expect_v of_o future_a as_o here_o we_o do_v for_o answer_v hereunto_o thus_o much_o this_o hold_v good_a in_o regard_n of_o god_n though_o it_o do_v not_o so_o well_o in_o regard_n of_o we_o or_o the_o thing_n themselves_o which_o do_v here_o make_v the_o difference_n as_o to_o god_n dispensation_n as_o for_o god_n himself_o he_o have_v the_o same_o power_n still_o that_o ever_o he_o have_v he_o be_v as_o able_a to_o deliver_v his_o people_n at_o one_o time_n as_o he_o be_v at_o another_o from_o one_o evil_a as_o well_o as_o from_o another_o from_o the_o great_a as_o well_v as_o from_o the_o less_o and_o further_o he_o have_v the_o same_o bowel_n in_o he_o still_o as_o ever_o the_o same_o love_n and_o affection_n to_o his_o servant_n now_o as_o he_o have_v have_v heretofore_o and_o in_o former_a time_n so_o that_o upon_o these_o consideration_n they_o may_v very_o well_o make_v these_o conclusion_n but_o it_o fall_v out_o otherwise_o sometime_o in_o these_o regard_n first_o that_o those_o which_o shall_v be_v the_o subject_n of_o these_o deliverance_n do_v vary_v and_o alter_v in_o their_o carriage_n and_o behaviour_n towards_o god_n perhaps_o neglect_v to_o seek_v unto_o he_o and_o to_o maintain_v their_o communion_n with_o he_o and_o give_v themselves_o liberty_n in_o some_o evil_a course_n and_o then_o as_o god_n tell_v the_o israelite_n though_o he_o have_v deliver_v they_o former_o yet_o he_o will_v now_o deliver_v they_o no_o more_o they_o way_n go_v to_o the_o god_n who_o they_o have_v serve_v judg._n 10.13_o 14._o second_o it_o be_v not_o always_o so_o conduce_v either_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n himself_o or_o the_o great_a good_a of_o the_o person_n in_o particular_a to_o be_v deliver_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n and_o way_n as_o it_o may_v be_v former_o they_o have_v be_v and_o then_o he_o do_v deal_v otherwise_o with_o they_o god_n still_o in_o all_o his_o deal_n with_o his_o servant_n look_v at_o the_o main_a chance_n which_o be_v to_o advance_v his_o own_o glorious_a name_n and_o to_o save_v their_o precious_a and_o immortal_a soul_n and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o heaven_n at_o last_o and_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o any_o deliverance_n may_v best_o consist_v with_o either_o of_o these_o so_o far_o forth_o they_o be_v
