a_o angel_n among_o the_o phrisee_n absolute_a in_o all_o other_o perfection_n yet_o without_o the_o inward_a power_n of_o grace_n to_o give_v they_o life_n he_o be_v but_o a_o spectacle_n of_o commiseration_n to_o angel_n &_o to_o man_n even_o as_o that_o body_n be_v which_o adorn_v with_o sundry_a other_o exquisite_a beauty_n want_v eyesight_n the_o chief_a grace_n that_o nature_n have_v in_o that_o kind_a to_o bestow_v or_o as_o a_o cunning_a organist_n skilful_a in_o the_o outward_a touch_n of_o his_o instrument_n yet_o without_o wind_n inspire_v can_v possible_o strike_v the_o care_n or_o please_v the_o heart_n with_o any_o melodious_a noise_n so_o though_o his_o action_n be_v flourish_v over_o with_o a_o fair_a tincture_n of_o outward_a religiousnesse_n and_o he_o exact_v in_o moral_a honesty_n yet_o without_o the_o breath_n and_o life_n of_o grace_n infuse_v there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a spiritual_a harmony_n in_o his_o affection_n woâ—ds_n or_o conversation_n thâ—t_o either_o will_v beget_v sound_a joy_n and_o spiritual_a delight_n in_o the_o soul_n or_o be_v please_v in_o the_o â—ares_n of_o almighty_a god_n you_o see_v then_o belove_v in_o christ_n jesus_n that_o the_o performance_n of_o outward_a duty_n of_o religion_n even_o the_o best_a sâ—â—h_v as_o be_v prayer_n hear_n the_o word_n of_o god_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n almsdeed_n and_o the_o like_a though_o they_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o command_v of_o god_n necessary_a to_o be_v do_v of_o every_o christian_a yet_o if_o they_o be_v divide_v from_o inward_a sanctification_n and_o sincerity_n of_o heart_n be_v so_o farâ—e_n from_o put_v we_o into_o possession_n of_o true_a happiness_n that_o they_o be_v odious_a and_o abominable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n i_o tell_v you_o in_o the_o beginning_n if_o you_o remember_v that_o beside_o outward_a righteousness_n the_o formal_a hypocrite_n may_v believe_v for_o a_o time_n and_o therefore_o by_o the_o inward_a though_o more_o general_a and_o inferior_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v have_v a_o temporary_a faith_n beget_v in_o he_o and_o this_o faith_n may_v bring_v forth_o some_o fruit_n and_o some_o kind_n of_o inward_a grace_n but_o that_o all_o this_o come_v short_a of_o salvation_n appear_v in_o the_o parable_n for_o there_o the_o hearer_n compare_v to_o the_o stony_a ground_n which_o i_o call_v the_o formal_a hypocrite_n be_v one_o of_o the_o reprobate_a hearer_n upon_o who_o the_o word_n be_v not_o the_o power_n of_o god_n to_o salvation_n as_o for_o those_o five_o degree_n add_v out_o of_o the_o six_o to_o the_o hebrews_n of_o which_o i_o tell_v you_o the_o formal_a hypocrite_n may_v be_v partaker_n it_o be_v manifest_a out_o of_o the_o same_o chapter_n that_o they_o come_v short_a of_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n for_o a_o man_n but_o so_o furnish_v may_v not_o only_o fall_v bâ—cke_n to_o a_o worse_o and_o more_o ordinary_a state_n of_o a_o reprobate_n but_o even_o to_o the_o depth_n of_o all_o impiety_n and_o apostasy_n he_o may_v not_o only_o have_v his_o measure_n of_o inward_a illumination_n all_o his_o light_a joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o god_n word_n quite_o extinguish_v but_o become_v a_o wilful_a and_o malicious_a scorner_n of_o true_a godliness_n he_o may_v not_o only_o grieve_v and_o quench_v the_o spirit_n but_o he_o may_v tread_v under_o foot_n the_o son_n of_o god_n count_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o testament_n as_o a_o unholy_a thing_n and_o despite_o the_o very_a spirit_n of_o grace_n so_o that_o it_o may_v be_v impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v be_v renew_v again_o by_o repentance_n in_o the_o last_o place_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o beside_o all_o these_o the_o formal_a hypocrite_n may_v entertain_v a_o persuasion_n of_o his_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o true_a happiness_n and_o so_o with_o contentment_n and_o security_n walk_v in_o the_o path_n that_o lead_v to_o eternal_a death_n but_o how_o weak_a and_o false_a the_o reason_n and_o motive_n to_o this_o persuasion_n be_v i_o have_v before_o large_o deliver_v it_o remain_v therefore_o that_o i_o shall_v now_o lay_v down_o certain_a mark_n and_o property_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o state_n of_o formal_a hypocrisy_n and_o save_a grace_n but_o i_o must_v refer_v a_o large_a prosecution_n and_o distinct_a treatise_n of_o they_o to_o some_o other_o place_n and_o time_n yet_o at_o this_o time_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o shall_v deliver_v so_o much_o that_o any_o man_n that_o will_v deal_v faithful_o with_o his_o own_o conscience_n and_o follow_v i_o with_o attention_n to_o the_o end_n may_v in_o some_o good_a measure_n be_v inform_v whether_o he_o lie_v yet_o in_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n or_o live_v in_o the_o light_n of_o grace_n some_o difference_n then_o first_o may_v arise_v out_o of_o the_o distinction_n of_o the_o degree_n and_o work_n of_o faith_n which_o that_o you_o may_v better_o conceive_v you_o must_v remember_v three_o sort_n of_o faith_n historical_a temporary_a save_v or_o justify_v faith_n historical_a faith_n be_v not_o only_o a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o also_o a_o assent_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o the_o
