clear_a and_o distinct_a idea_n be_v more_o in_o the_o right_n than_o i_o for_o they_o who_o place_n certainty_n where_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v have_v can_v in_o that_o be_v no_o more_o in_o disagreement_n of_o idea_n weaken_v the_o credibility_n of_o this_o fundamental_a article_n of_o faith_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n what_o be_v your_o lordship_n proof_n of_o it_o just_o this_o 27._o let_v we_o now_o suppose_v a_o person_n by_o natural_a reason_n to_o attain_v to_o a_o certainty_n as_o to_o the_o be_v of_o god_n and_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o he_o proceed_v upon_o j._n l_n general_a ground_n of_o certainty_n from_o the_o agreement_n or_o disagreement_n of_o idea_n and_o so_o from_o the_o idea_n of_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n he_o be_v make_v certain_a of_o these_o two_o point_n before_o mention_v but_o let_v we_o again_o suppose_v that_o such_o a_o person_n upon_o a_o far_a examination_n of_o j._n l_n method_n of_o proceed_v find_v that_o the_o the_o place_n of_o certainty_n in_o the_o perception_n of_o the_o agreement_n or_o disagreement_n of_o idea_n be_v the_o cause_n that_o there_o can_v be_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o the_o assurance_n whatever_o i_o be_o at_o a_o loss_n about_o the_o determine_a sense_n of_o in_o any_o of_o your_o lordship_n expression_n only_o i_o will_v crave_v leave_n to_o beg_v my_o reader_n to_o observe_v that_o in_o this_o first_o head_n 27-31_a which_o we_o be_v upon_o your_o lordship_n have_v use_v the_o term_n certain_a and_o certainty_n near_o twenty_o time_n but_o without_o determine_v in_o any_o of_o they_o whether_o you_o mean_v knowledge_n or_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n or_o any_o degree_n of_o believe_v though_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o in_o these_o page_n your_o lordship_n use_v certainty_n for_o all_o these_o three_o which_o ambiguous_a use_n of_o the_o main_a word_n in_o that_o discourse_n can_v but_o render_v your_o lordship_n sense_n clear_a and_o perspicuous_a and_o your_o argument_n very_o cogent_a and_o no_o doubt_n will_v do_v so_o to_o any_o one_o who_o will_v be_v but_o at_o the_o pain_n to_o reduce_v that_o one_o word_n to_o a_o clear_a determine_a sense_n all_o through_o these_o few_o paragraph_n your_o lordship_n say_v 23._o have_v not_o all_o mankind_n who_o have_v talk_v of_o matter_n of_o faith_n allow_v a_o certainty_n of_o faith_n as_o unbelief_n or_o any_o one_o who_o be_v weak_a in_o faith_n or_o of_o little_a faith_n be_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v certain_a or_o de_fw-fr dubio_fw-la certus_fw-la of_o what_o he_o believe_v the_o soul_n can_v be_v material_a because_o then_o the_o evidence_n of_o its_o be_v immortal_a will_v be_v very_o much_o lessen_v which_o be_v to_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o as_o credible_a upon_o divine_a revelation_n that_o a_o material_a substance_n shall_v be_v immortal_a as_o a_o immaterial_a or_o which_o be_v all_o one_o that_o god_n be_v not_o equal_o to_o be_v believe_v when_o he_o declare_v that_o a_o material_a substance_n shall_v be_v immortal_a as_o when_o he_o declare_v that_o a_o immaterial_a shall_v be_v so_o because_o the_o immortality_n of_o a_o material_a substance_n and_o body_n to_o eternity_n and_o i_o persuade_v myself_o that_o the_o man_n of_o sense_n to_o who_o your_o lordship_n appeal_v in_o the_o case_n do_v not_o find_v their_o belief_n of_o this_o fundamental_a point_n much_o weaken_v by_o that_o difficulty_n i_o think_v heretofore_o and_o by_o your_o lordship_n permission_n will_v think_v so_o still_o that_o the_o union_n of_o part_n of_o matter_n one_o with_o another_o be_v as_o much_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n as_o the_o union_n of_o a_o material_a and_o immaterial_a substance_n and_o that_o it_o do_v not_o take_v off_o very_o much_o or_o at_o all_o from_o the_o evidence_n of_o immortality_n which_o depend_v on_o that_o union_n that_o it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n what_o it_o be_v that_o shall_v keep_v they_o together_o though_o its_o depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o gift_n and_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n where_o the_o manner_n create_v great_a difficulty_n in_o the_o understanding_n and_o our_o reason_n can_v discover_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n how_o it_o be_v be_v that_o which_o your_o lordship_n so_o positive_o say_v lessen_v the_o credibility_n of_o the_o fundamental_a article_n of_o the_o resurrection_n and_o immortality_n but_o my_o lord_n to_o remove_v this_o objection_n a_o little_a and_o to_o show_v of_o how_o small_a force_n it_o be_v even_o with_o yourself_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o presume_v that_o your_o lordship_n as_o firm_o believe_v the_o immortality_n of_o the_o body_n after_o the_o resurrection_n as_o any_o other_o article_n of_o faith_n if_o so_o than_o it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n what_o it_o be_v that_o shall_v keep_v together_o the_o part_n of_o a_o material_a soul_n to_o one_o that_o believe_v it_o be_v material_a can_v no_o more_o weaken_v the_o credibility_n of_o its_o immortality_n than_o the_o like_a difficulty_n weaken_v the_o credibility_n of_o the_o immortality_n of_o the_o body_n for_o when_o your_o lordship_n shall_v find_v it_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n what_o it_o be_v beside_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v keep_v together_o the_o part_n of_o our_o material_a body_n to_o eternity_n or_o even_o soul_n and_o body_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o any_o one_o who_o shall_v think_v the_o soul_n material_a will_v also_o find_v it_o as_o easy_a to_o wonder_v to_o find_v your_o lordship_n to_o argue_v that_o because_o it_o be_v a_o difficulty_n to_o understand_v what_o shall_v keep_v together_o the_o minute_n part_v of_o a_o material_a soul_n when_o life_n be_v go_v and_o because_o it_o be_v not_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n how_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v capable_a of_o immortality_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o immaterial_a substance_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o so_o credible_a as_o if_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o give_v a_o account_n by_o natural_a reason_n how_o it_o can_v be_v for_o to_o this_o it_o be_v that_o all_o this_o your_o discourse_n tend_v as_o be_v evident_a by_o what_o be_v already_o set_v down_o out_o of_o page_n 55_o and_o will_v be_v more_o full_o make_v out_o by_o what_o your_o lordship_n say_v in_o other_o place_n though_o there_o need_v no_o such_o proof_n since_o it_o will_v all_o be_v nothing_o against_o i_o in_o any_o other_o sense_n i_o think_v your_o lordship_n have_v in_o other_o place_n assert_v and_o insist_v on_o this_o truth_n that_o no_o part_n of_o divine_a revelation_n be_v the_o less_o to_o be_v believe_v because_o the_o thing_n itself_o oreat_v great_a difficulty_n in_o the_o understanding_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v explain_v and_o it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n how_o it_o be_v this_o as_o i_o take_v it_o your_o lordship_n condemn_v in_o other_o as_o a_o very_a unreaonable_a principle_n and_o such_o as_o will_v subvert_v all_o the_o article_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n that_o be_v mere_a matter_n of_o faith_n as_o i_o think_v it_o will_v and_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o you_o shall_v make_v use_n of_o it_o here_o yourself_o against_o the_o article_n of_o life_n and_o immortality_n that_o christ_n have_v bring_v to_o light_v through_o the_o gospel_n and_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v make_v out_o by_o natural_a reason_n without_o revelation_n but_o you_o will_v say_v you_o speak_v only_o of_o the_o soul_n and_o your_o word_n be_v that_o it_o be_v no_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o account_n how_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v capable_a of_o immortality_n unless_o it_o and_o which_o therefore_o according_a to_o your_o principle_n must_v be_v less_o credible_a than_o other_o article_n that_o create_v less_o difficulty_n to_o the_o understanding_n for_o your_o lordship_n say_v 28._o that_o you_o appeal_v to_o any_o man_n of_o sense_n whether_o to_o a_o man_n who_o think_v by_o his_o principle_n he_o can_v from_o natural_a ground_n demonstrate_v the_o immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o find_v the_o uncertainty_n of_o those_o principle_n he_o go_v upon_o in_o point_n of_o reason_n i._n e._n the_o find_n he_o can_v not_o certain_o prove_v it_o here_o make_v it_o as_o impossible_a to_o come_v to_o certain_a clear_a and_o distinct_a notion_n of_o these_o thing_n i._n e._n extension_n and_o motion_n as_o to_o discourse_n into_o a_o blind_a man_n the_o idea_n of_o light_n and_o colour_n answ._n what_o clear_a and_o distinct_a notion_n or_o idea_n be_v i_o do_v understand_v but_o what_o your_o lordship_n mean_v by_o certain_a notion_n speak_v here_o as_o you_o do_v of_o simple_a idea_n i_o must_v own_v i_o do_v not_o understand_v that_o for_o the_o attain_v those_o simple_a idea_n i_o send_v man_n to_o their_o sense_n i_o shall_v think_v i_o be_o in_o the_o right_n till_o i_o hear_v from_o your_o lordship_n better_a argument_n to_o convince_v i_o of_o my_o mistake_n than_o these_o 127._o be_v we_o not_o now_o in_o the_o true_a way_n to_o certainty_n be_v not_o this_o a_o rare_a way_n of_o certainty_n and_o if_o your_o lordship_n have_v a_o better_a way_n to_o get_v clear_a and_o distinct_a simple_a idea_n than_o by_o the_o sense_n you_o will_v oblige_v i_o and_o i_o think_v the_o world_n too_o by_o a_o discovery_n of_o it_o till_o then_o i_o shall_v continue_v in_o the_o same_o mind_n i_o be_v of_o when_o i_o write_v that_o passage_n 6._o viz._n that_o word_n can_v do_v nothing_o towards_o it_o and_o that_o for_o the_o reason_n which_o i_o there_o promise_v and_o be_v to_o be_v find_v essay_n b._n 3._o c._n 4._o from_o these_o word_n of_o i_o that_o most_o of_o our_o simple_a idea_n be_v not_o the_o likeness_n of_o thing_n without_o we_o yet_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o to_o come_v in_o here_o a_o little_a out_o of_o season_n because_o the_o proposition_n to_o be_v prove_v be_v as_o i_o humble_o conceive_v not_o that_o our_o idea_n deceive_v we_o but_o that_o i_o have_v not_o a_o criterion_n to_o
