a_o epistle_n to_o the_o true_o religious_a and_o loyal_a gentry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n written_a by_o edmund_n ellis_n rector_n of_o east_n arlington_n in_o the_o county_n of_o devon._n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d greg._n nazianz._n orat._n 9_o london_n print_v in_o the_o year_n mdclxxxvii_o a_o epistle_n to_o the_o true_o religious_a and_o loyal_a gentry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n etc._n etc._n my_o honour_a brethren_n if_o i_o think_v the_o address_n i_o here_o make_v unto_o you_o have_v need_n of_o a_o apology_n it_o will_v be_v uncapable_a of_o any_o my_o confidence_n i_o confess_v be_v utter_o inexcusable_a if_o it_o be_v not_o ground_v upon_o reason_n what_o i_o desire_v therefore_o be_v only_o this_o that_o you_o will_v be_v please_v to_o condescend_v to_o the_o most_o serious_a consideration_n of_o what_o be_v say_v by_o so_o obscure_a a_o person_n i_o do_v not_o pretend_v to_o any_o skill_n in_o the_o letter_n of_o our_o common_a law_n but_o that_o law_n which_o all_o mankind_n ought_v to_o be_v and_o that_o law_n which_o all_o christian_n profess_v they_o be_v govern_v by_o have_v be_v my_o study_n above_o thirty_o year_n and_o in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o charity_n or_o divine_a love_n to_o which_o all_o my_o speculation_n natural_o tend_v i_o find_v it_o my_o duty_n to_o endeavour_v with_o all_o my_o might_n to_o communicate_v the_o knowledge_n i_o have_v of_o this_o truth_n that_o if_o the_o parliament_n shall_v comply_v with_o his_o majesty_n most_o just_a and_o equitable_a desire_n of_o the_o abrogation_n of_o all_o such_o law_n against_o the_o papist_n which_o be_v more_o rigorous_a than_o any_o of_o those_o against_o the_o other_o nonconformist_n it_o will_v most_o certain_o conduce_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o men._n if_o any_o man_n shall_v say_v what_o impudence_n be_v this_o be_v not_o such_o a_o proposal_n contrary_a to_o the_o present_a government_n i_o shall_v confident_o answer_v it_o be_v not_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o confidence_n i_o shall_v here_o as_o well_o as_o i_o can_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o a_o letter_n in_o all_o humility_n tender_a to_o your_o consideration_n by_o those_o word_n of_o the_o bless_a apostle_n do_v we_o then_o make_v void_a the_o law_n yea_o we_o establish_v the_o law._n i_o be_o prompt_v to_o say_v to_o our_o adversary_n in_o this_o case_n do_v we_o subvert_v yea_o we_o establish_v the_o present_a government_n that_o this_o may_v be_v clear_o perceive_v i_o shall_v desire_v that_o it_o may_v be_v due_o consider_v that_o whatsoever_o tend_v to_o the_o establish_n of_o the_o right_n of_o our_o monarchy_n do_v most_o certain_o tend_v to_o the_o establish_n of_o our_o civil_a government_n and_o what_o be_v it_o to_o establish_v the_o right_n of_o monarchy_n but_o to_o secure_v all_o due_a obedience_n to_o our_o monarch_n and_o his_o successor_n throughout_o all_o generation_n though_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o all_o subject_n enjoin_v by_o the_o five_o commandment_n to_o retain_v a_o filial_a affection_n for_o their_o prince_z the_o father_n of_o their_o country_n whatsoever_o he_o do_v or_o design_n yet_o alas_o since_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n be_v lead_v more_o by_o the_o love_n of_o life_n and_o estate_n than_o a_o sense_n of_o duty_n towards_o god_n and_o the_o hope_n of_o glory_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v and_o since_o so_o many_o of_o those_o who_o be_v habitual_o heavenly-minded_n often_o fall_v from_o their_o better_a temper_n and_o be_v carry_v in_o the_o stream_n of_o secular_a interest_n how_o can_v it_o be_v suppose_v that_o subject_n shall_v be_v unite_v in_o their_o affection_n to_o their_o prince_n and_o to_o one_o another_o whilst_o there_o be_v law_n stand_v against_o so_o great_a a_o number_n of_o they_o that_o be_v person_n very_o ingenious_a very_o well_o breed_v and_o of_o great_a estate_n many_o of_o they_o of_o our_o most_o ancient_a nobility_n and_o many_o exceed_o learned_a law_n i_o say_v which_o if_o put_v in_o execution_n will_v deprive_v they_o of_o their_o life_n or_o estate_n and_o what_o do_v those_o man_n intimate_v that_o be_v so_o eager_a against_o the_o abrogate_a of_o such_o law_n but_o that_o they_o hope_v for_o a_o time_n when_o they_o shall_v get_v the_o blood_n of_o some_o of_o their_o loyal_a fellow-subject_n to_o be_v shed_v or_o their_o estate_n take_v from_o they_o because_o they_o can_v do_v what_o their_o conscience_n support_v by_o the_o concur_v judgement_n of_o thousand_o of_o sober_a and_o learned_a man_n oblige_v they_o not_o to_o do_v if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v what_o signify_v a_o oath_n to_o a_o papist_n &_o c._n i_o shall_v most_o humble_o beg_v that_o it_o may_v be_v consider_v whether_o such_o a_o objection_n can_v have_v any_o thing_n in_o it_o of_o natural_a conscience_n or_o common_a honesty_n since_o few_o or_o none_o that_o we_o know_v of_o the_o papist_n who_o take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n do_v ever_o break_v it_o but_o all_o the_o world_n know_v it_o be_v break_v in_o the_o most_o heinous_a manner_n that_o possible_o can_v be_v by_o thousand_o of_o that_o sort_n of_o people_n who_o be_v and_o ever_o have_v be_v most_o bloody_o set_v against_o the_o papist_n and_o as_o for_o this_o sort_n of_o people_n who_o murder_v the_o father_n of_o our_o gracious_a sovereign_n attempt_v the_o murder_v of_o his_o brother_n and_o the_o exclude_v of_o himself_o from_o his_o royal_a inheritance_n and_o who_o be_v i_o think_v i_o may_v say_v all_o of_o they_o in_o their_o person_n or_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o affection_n so_o late_o in_o open_a rebellion_n against_o himself_o let_v we_o observe_v his_o majesty_n most_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a deal_n with_o they_o and_o admire_v the_o benignity_n of_o that_o wisdom_n which_o have_v hitherto_o govern_v he_o since_o the_o divine_a providence_n bring_v he_o to_o be_v our_o governor_n next_o and_o imemediate_o under_o the_o great_a and_o glorious_a monarch_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o since_o he_o be_v so_o kind_a to_o they_o how_o crooked_a and_o perverse_a will_v it_o seem_v if_o we_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o obstruct_v the_o current_n of_o his_o sacred_a clemency_n when_o it_o flow_v towards_o person_n of_o his_o own_o persuasion_n in_o a_o way_n so_o just_a and_o equitable_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o all_o man_n how_o much_o it_o will_v contribute_v to_o the_o peace_n and_o tranquillity_n the_o ease_n and_o comfort_n of_o a_o protestant_a successor_n if_o the_o papist_n be_v free_v from_o the_o terror_n of_o those_o dreadful_a law_n i_o can_v speak_v large_o but_o i_o shall_v hasten_v to_o my_o other_o point_n to_o show_v that_o this_o lenity_n to_o the_o papist_n can_v be_v no_o disadvantage_n to_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o rather_o a_o great_a advantage_n in_o as_o much_o as_o we_o shall_v thereby_o declare_v to_o all_o the_o world_n the_o sincerity_n of_o our_o profession_n to_o be_v meek_a and_o lowly_a in_o heart_n and_o that_o we_o will_v not_o be_v affright_v by_o the_o pharisaical_a multitude_n from_o acknowledge_v all_o the_o truth_n we_o find_v profess_a and_o all_o the_o uirtue_n we_o find_v practise_v by_o papist_n the_o holy_a father_n and_o the_o four_o first_o general_n council_n next_o to_o the_o holy_a scripture_n our_o church_n be_v found_v upon_o and_o how_o many_o learned_a man_n in_o this_o kingdom_n begin_v to_o make_v light_n of_o these_o bless_a record_n of_o christian_a antiquity_n which_o grow_v evil_a the_o course_n which_o his_o majesty_n have_v take_v will_v most_o undoubted_o suppress_v if_o these_o dreadful_a law_n be_v repeal_v certain_o it_o will_v take_v off_o the_o edge_n of_o the_o animosity_n which_o can_v but_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o some_o learned_a papist_n against_o the_o church_n of_o england_n which_o must_v needs_o make_v they_o in_o their_o write_n more_o pungent_a than_o otherwise_o they_o will_v be_v for_o poor_a man_n they_o may_v just_o apprehend_v that_o the_o stand_v of_o our_o church_n tend_v to_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o life_n if_o our_o church_n can_v stand_v without_o those_o severe_a law_n that_o have_v be_v make_v against_o they_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o no_o further_o trouble_v at_o present_a but_o shall_v commend_v you_o to_o the_o the_o protection_n and_o instruction_n of_o the_o almighty_a and_o only_o wise_a god_n the_o god_n of_o peace_n and_o love_n and_o shall_v ever_o remain_v your_o affectionate_a philotheus_n
