A77941 A declaration of the sad and great persecution and martyrdom of the people of God, called Quakers, in New--England for the worshipping of God. Wherof 22 have been banished upon pain of death. 03 have been martyred. 03 have had their right-ears cut. 01 hath been burned in the hand with the letter H. 31 persons have received 650 stripes. 01 was beat while his body was like a jelly. Several were beat with pitched ropes. Five appeals made by them to England, were denied by the rulers of Boston. One thousand forty four pounds worth of goods hath been taken from them (being poor men) for meeting together in the fear of the Lord, and for keeping the commands of Christ. One now lyeth in iron-fetters, condemned to dye. Also, some considerations, presented to the King, which is in answer to a petition and address, which was presented unto him by the general court at Boston : subscribed by J. Endicot, the chief persecutor there; thinking thereby to cover themselves from the blood of the innocent. Burrough, Edward, 1634-1662. 1661 (1661) Wing B5994; Thomason E1086_4; ESTC R13926 22,607 32

be_v not_o work_v contrary_a to_o the_o scripture_n and_o the_o spirit_n that_o give_v they_o forth_o and_o contrary_a to_o a_o good_a conscience_n i_o be_o yet_o ignorant_a and_o must_v leave_v it_o to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o king_n before_o who_o this_o matter_n be_v bring_v to_o receive_v his_o judgement_n 2._o let_v the_o king_n consider_v how_o they_o have_v ignorant_o condemn_v themselves_o in_o the_o same_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o have_v judge_v other_o for_o while_o they_o seem_v to_o complain_v of_o the_o imposi●ions_n of_o the_o bishop_n which_o they_o style_v prevail_a hierarchy_n if_o it_o be_v transgression_n in_o the_o bishop_n in_o day_n past_a to_o impose_v upon_o these_o petitioner_n and_o to_o persecute_v they_o for_o nonconformist_n how_o much_o more_o be_v these_o man_n guilty_a of_o imposition_n and_o persecution_n of_o tender_a conscience_n nay_o they_o have_v exceed_v in_o the_o same_o transgression_n and_o become_v sevenfold_a guilty_a of_o the_o sin_n themselves_o which_o they_o complain_v against_o in_o other_o for_o they_o have_v go_v further_o in_o cruelty_n and_o persecution_n towards_o the_o innocent_a quaker_n than_o ever_o the_o bishop_n proceed_v against_o they_o even_o so_o far_o further_o as_o the_o murder_n of_o a_o man_n be_v more_o than_o cut_v off_o his_o ear_n and_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o quaker_n towards_o these_o petitioner_n have_v be_v as_o innocent_a as_o ever_o they_o be_v towards_o the_o bishop_n oh_o hypocritical_a generation_n who_o be_v condemn_v of_o other_o for_o that_o whereof_o themselves_o be_v guilty_a and_o impose_v upon_o other_o in_o a_o far_o high_a degree_n than_o ever_o the_o bishop_n impose_v on_o they_o witness_v their_o law_n in_o new-england_n which_o judge_v every_o man_n to_o pay_v 5_o s._n per_fw-la day_n who_o come_v not_o to_o their_o assembly_n and_o impose_v fine_n of_o 40_o s._n and_o 50_o s._n a_o piece_n on_o such_o as_o meet_v together_o to_o worship_n the_o lord_n which_o be_v evident_a sign_n of_o a_o evil_a conscience_n as_o themselves_o speak_v the_o next_o thing_n that_o i_o note_v upon_o which_o the_o king_n ought_v to_o consider_v the_o petitioner_n say_v concern_v the_o quaker_n open_v capital_a blasphemer_n open_a seducer_n from_o the_o glorious_a trinity_n the_o lord_n christ_n the_o bless_a gospel_n and_o from_o the_o holy_a scripture_n as_o the_o rule_n of_o life_n open_a enemy_n to_o government_n itself_o as_o establish_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o any_o but_o man_n of_o their_o own_o principle_n malignant_a promoter_n of_o doctrine_n direct_o tend_v to_o subvert_v both_o our_o church_n and_o state_n by_o way_n of_o answer_n to_o this_o let_v the_o king_n consider_v 1._o the_o envious_a and_o detestable_a spirit_n of_o maliciousness_n of_o these_o accuser_n and_o how_o vehement_a and_o fervent_a their_o persecute_v spirit_n be_v draw_v forth_o with_o reproachful_a term_n in_o the_o high_a degree_n like_a as_o if_o they_o can_v not_o utter_v sufficient_o the_o envy_n of_o their_o heart_n or_o as_o if_o they_o want_v word_n to_o demonstrate_v their_o malignity_n and_o devour_a malice_n against_o that_o people_n who_o they_o in_o scorn_n call_v quaker_n and_o all_o this_o to_o present_v we_o odious_a and_o abominable_a before_o thou_o o_o king_n i_o say_v but_o this_o of_o they_o unto_o thou_o the_o lord_n forgive_v they_o if_o they_o have_v not_o sin_v unto_o death_n and_o unpardonable_o i_o have_v no_o desire_n of_o revenge_n towards_o they_o but_o i_o leave_v vengeance_n to_o the_o lord_n who_o will_v recompense_v in_o his_o season_n neither_o do_v i_o desire_v to_o provoke_v or_o incense_v the_o king_n against_o they_o only_a duty_n to_o god_n and_o the_o king_n teach_v i_o and_o love_n constrain_v i_o and_o a_o absolute_a necessity_n press_v much_o upon_o i_o to_o spread_v our_o denial_n of_o their_o bitter_a and_o malicious_a accusation_n against_o we_o before_o the_o king_n unto_o who_o we_o be_v thus_o foul_o accuse_v and_o i_o say_v i_o be_o confident_a that_o the_o king_n have_v better_a experience_n of_o we_o than_o to_o believe_v these_o our_o malicious_a accuser_n and_o i_o do_v appeal_n to_o he_o from_o the_o knowledge_n which_o he_o have_v already_o of_o we_o that_o he_o believe_v we_o be_v innocent_a and_o not_o guilty_a of_o those_o thing_n thus_o unjust_o charge_v upon_o we_o and_o i_o question_v not_o but_o he_o will_v right_o understand_v that_o these_o accusation_n be_v more_o out_o of_o hatred_n and_o envy_n against_o we_o than_o out_o of_o desire_n to_o benefit_v the_o king_n by_o such_o presentation_n 2._o i_o do_v testify_v unto_o the_o king_n and_o before_o the_o whole_a world_n that_o we_o do_v profess_v and_o believe_v concern_v the_o father_n son_n and_o spirit_n and_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o bless_a gospel_n and_o the_o holy_a scripture_n i_o say_v we_o do_v believe_v and_o make_v profession_n in_o truth_n and_o righteousness_n concern_v all_o these_o thing_n and_o by_o our_o doctrine_n and_o instruction_n do_v persuade_v all_o people_n to_o believe_v and_o not_o seduce_v any_o from_o these_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o this_o be_v know_v through_o these_o kingdom_n concern_v we_o though_o we_o stand_v now_o accuse_v false_o concern_v these_o matter_n before_o the_o king_n but_o as_o for_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o rule_n of_o life_n we_o say_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o give_v forth_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o rule_n of_o life_n and_o faith_n unto_o the_o saint_n and_o lead_v not_o contrary_a but_o according_a unto_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o beleif_n and_o practice_n of_o whatsoever_o the_o scripture_n say_v and_o if_o these_o petitioner_n do_v make_v the_o scripture_n the_o rule_n of_o their_o life_n and_o practice_n for_o the_o denial_n of_o which_o they_o here_o accuse_v we_o they_o will_v not_o have_v cut_v off_o ear_n banish_v and_o put_v to_o death_n for_o the_o cause_n of_o conscience_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o scripture_n and_o proceed_v from_o another_o spirit_n than_o that_o which_o give_v forth_o the_o scripture_n 3._o concern_v government_n our_o principle_n and_o practice_n be_v know_v to_o many_o and_o partly_o to_o the_o king_n we_o be_v not_o enemy_n unto_o government_n itself_o as_o these_o our_o accuser_n do_v charge_n we_o but_o it_o be_v our_o principle_n and_o have_v ever_o be_v and_o be_v our_o practice_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o whatsoever_o government_n be_v set_v up_o over_o we_o either_o by_o do_v or_o suffer_v and_o neither_o to_o vilify_v nor_o rebel_v against_o any_o government_n or_o governor_n by_o any_o malicious_a plot_n or_o contrivance_n but_o to_o walk_v in_o meekness_n and_o humility_n towards_o all_o be_v subject_a for_o conscience_n sake_n as_o i_o have_v say_v either_o by_o do_v or_o suffer_v and_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o the_o king_n be_v sufficient_o inform_v hereof_o and_o believe_v this_o testimony_n 4._o as_o for_o our_o doctrine_n tend_v to_o subvert_v both_o church_n and_o state_n this_o be_v also_o a_o false_a accusation_n and_o slander_n for_o our_o doctrine_n be_v to_o convert_v and_o not_o to_o subvert_v even_o to_o convert_v to_o god_n and_o truth_n and_o righteousness_n that_o man_n shall_v live_v in_o these_o thing_n and_o forsake_v all_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a and_o this_o effect_n our_o doctrine_n have_v wrought_v in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o testimony_n of_o many_o conscience_n shall_v bear_v witness_n oh_o let_v the_o king_n consider_v of_o our_o defence_n as_o well_o as_o of_o our_o enemy_n charge_n who_o have_v think_v it_o not_o enough_o to_o whip_v most_o cruel_o banish_v cut_v ear_n and_o put_v to_o death_n the_o innocent_a but_o must_v still_o accuse_v they_o false_o and_o seek_v to_o cover_v themselves_o by_o fawn_v and_o flatter_a address_n unto_o the_o king_n like_a as_o if_o they_o have_v do_v no_o evil_n when_o as_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n be_v witness_n to_o who_o we_o can_v appeal_v that_o our_o brethren_n suffer_v the_o torture_n of_o shameful_a death_n in_o new-england_n through_o their_o unjust_a law_n and_o sentence_n as_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o the_o live_a god_n for_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n jesus_n and_o for_o his_o truth_n which_o they_o hold_v until_o death_n and_o not_o for_o evildoing_a and_o the_o executioner_n of_o these_o inhuman_a cruelcy_n seem_v so_o far_o from_o repentance_n for_o their_o evil_n do_v that_o they_o rather_o justify_v themselves_o in_o what_o they_o have_v do_v and_o cease_v not_o to_o smite_v and_o wound_v and_o reproach_v the_o innocent_a and_o that_o before_o the_o king_n and_o that_o after_o they_o have_v martyr_v they_o again_o these_o petitioner_n say_v after_o all_o other_o mean_n for_o a_o long_a time_n use_v in_o vain_a we_o be_v at_o last_o constrain_v for_o our_o own_o safety_n say_v they_o to_o pass_v a_o sentence_n of_o
