by_o more_o than_o one_o obligation_n engage_v so_o to_o do_v to_o appear_v in_o defence_n of_o the_o royal_a supremacy_n it_o be_v indeed_o very_o strange_a to_o consider_v after_o what_o manner_n a_o certain_a writer_n have_v of_o late_o deliver_v his_o sense_n as_o to_o both_o these_o 2._o and_o such_o as_o will_v hardly_o be_v credit_v except_o i_o repeat_v it_o in_o his_o own_o word_n it_o be_v natural_a say_v he_o to_o expect_v the_o insurrection_n of_o infidel_n and_o heretic_n against_o the_o proposal_n and_o power_n of_o a_o convocation_n but_o who_o will_v have_v dream_v that_o any_o clergy_n man_n of_o the_o church_n shall_v lift_v up_o his_o heel_n against_o she_o when_o the_o great_a luminary_n of_o the_o church_n shall_v sign_v the_o theta_n upon_o her_o right_n liberty_n and_o authority_n divine_a and_o humane_a and_o this_o voluntary_o and_o without_o any_o bribe_n offer_v or_o menace_v denounce_v the_o concession_n be_v take_v for_o sincere_a and_o for_o that_o cause_n just._n king_n henry_n the_o viii_o of_o famous_a memory_n 3._o notwithstanding_o all_o his_o claim_n at_o common-law_n and_o his_o interest_n in_o his_o parliament_n through_o power_n and_o the_o reward_n by_o abbey_n and_o church-land_n can_v not_o have_v make_v himself_o so_o absolute_a in_o eccesiasticals_n have_v he_o not_o procure_v before_o the_o submission_n of_o the_o clergy_n nor_o can_v he_o have_v compass_v that_o 4._o but_o by_o the_o terror_n of_o a_o praemunire_n under_o which_o they_o have_v fall_v and_o upon_o which_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o follow_v his_o blow_n and_o so_o to_o bend_v or_o break_v they_o and_o yet_o this_o act_n of_o a_o popish_a unreformed_a and_o will_v nigh_o outlaw_v convocation_n extort_a for_o fear_n of_o ruin_n and_o through_o ignorance_n and_o non-suspition_n of_o the_o act_n consequent_a upon_o it_o prejudge_n more_o against_o our_o liberty_n than_o all_o secular_a constitution_n can_v possible_o have_v do_v without_o it_o and_o must_v we_o now_o consecrate_v all_o these_o procedure_v the_o result_v of_o which_o we_o feel_v in_o the_o total_a ruin_n of_o ecclesiastical_a discipline_n and_o christian_a piety_n by_o our_o voluntary_a plea_n and_o acclamation_n and_o to_o gratify_v the_o civil_a power_n to_o a_o arbitrary_a utmost_a violate_v the_o most_o important_a truth_n of_o principle_n and_o history_n treat_v the_o synod_n of_o the_o church_n with_o spite_n and_o contumely_n and_o recommend_v the_o great_a slavery_n of_o she_o to_o the_o appetite_n of_o civil_a power_n this_o be_v a_o severe_a charge_n and_o a_o man_n have_v need_n have_v a_o very_a good_a cause_n or_o a_o very_a impregnable_a face_n who_o treat_v king_n and_o parliament_n convocation_n and_o clergyman_n after_o such_o a_o rate_n for_o when_o all_o be_v do_v it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o what_o that_o convocation_n do_v and_o that_o king_n and_o parliament_n enact_v be_v after_o two_o intermediate_v reign_n again_o repeat_v in_o the_o first_o of_o queen_n elizabeth_n be_v at_o this_o day_n approve_v of_o by_o the_o canon_n of_o king_n james_n the_o first_o and_o allow_v of_o in_o the_o nine_o and_o thirty_o article_n of_o religion_n to_o which_o this_o author_n himself_o have_v more_o than_o once_o subscribe_v and_o methinks_v the_o consideration_n of_o that_o if_o nothing_o else_o may_v have_v induce_v he_o to_o have_v be_v more_o temperate_a in_o his_o charge_n against_o i_o who_o have_v defend_v no_o other_o authority_n in_o the_o prince_n than_o what_o both_o he_o and_o i_o and_o every_o other_o clergyman_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v solemn_o declare_v our_o assent_n to_o can._n and_o be_v oblige_v to_o our_o power_n to_o maintain_v can._n but_o our_o author_n do_v not_o intend_v to_o leave_v this_o point_n so_o easy_o his_o zeal_n carry_v he_o yet_o far_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o king_n supremacy_n to_o say_v nothing_o of_o his_o fresh_a invective_n against_o that_o king_n 107._o and_o that_o convocation_n which_o first_o begin_v to_o assert_v the_o royal_a authority_n against_o the_o invasion_n which_o have_v so_o notorious_o be_v make_v upon_o it_o pag._n 110._o he_o affirm_v the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n in_o the_o convention_n freedom_n and_o act_n of_o synod_n to_o be_v of_o divine_a right_n this_o he_o again_o insist_o upon_o pag._n 115._o and_o in_o the_o next_o page_n call_v they_o divine_a privilege_n give_v by_o god_n and_o grant_v to_o priest_n for_o the_o conduct_n and_o conservation_n of_o the_o church_n and_o in_o the_o same_o page_n speak_v of_o the_o prince_n break_v in_o upon_o these_o suppose_a right_n he_o say_v not_o only_o the_o romish_a church_n but_o all_o other_o sectary_n and_o the_o scotch_a kirk_n illustrious_o scorn_v to_o admit_v any_o servitude_n notwithstanding_o not_o only_o national_a protection_n but_o promotion_n be_v sensible_a that_o a_o liberty_n of_o religion_n government_n and_o church-discipline_n be_v more_o valuable_a than_o all_o worldly_a wealth_n or_o interest_n and_o without_o which_o they_o can_v apprehend_v any_o protection_n to_o religion_n or_o the_o society_n that_o profess_v it_o from_o which_o last_o word_n i_o suppose_v i_o shall_v not_o injure_v his_o sense_n if_o i_o infer_v that_o then_o according_a to_o his_o notion_n the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v real_o at_o present_a in_o a_o persecute_a state_n and_o have_v be_v so_o ever_o since_o the_o reformation_n and_o can_v be_v look_v upon_o so_o much_o as_o a_o protect_v church_n till_o this_o act_n of_o the_o submission_n of_o the_o clergy_n shall_v be_v repeal_v a_o strange_a reflection_n certain_o and_o very_o unbecoming_a those_o manifold_a blessing_n our_o church_n have_v enjoy_v under_o its_o reform_a prince_n and_o do_v at_o this_o time_n enjoy_v under_o her_o glorious_a preserver_n who_o great_a crime_n i_o be_o afraid_a it_o be_v in_o some_o man_n opinion_n that_o he_o have_v deliver_v we_o from_o that_o slavery_n into_o which_o we_o be_v run_v though_o such_o as_o our_o new_a disciplinarian_n seem_v to_o think_v the_o only_a way_n to_o a_o canonical_a liberty_n i_o must_v transcribe_v a_o great_a part_n of_o his_o book_n shall_v i_o here_o repeat_v all_o that_o this_o author_n have_v say_v in_o the_o most_o spiteful_a manner_n that_o he_o know_v how_o to_o express_v it_o against_o all_o that_o plead_v for_o or_o speak_v well_o of_o this_o part_n of_o the_o king_n supremacy_n see_v how_o he_o harangue_n his_o brethren_n of_o the_o clergy_n upon_o this_o occasion_n 155._o p._n 119._o we_o we_o only_o say_v he_o be_v the_o poor_a tame_n dis-spirited_n drowsy_a body_n that_o be_v in_o love_n with_o our_o own_o fetter_n and_o this_o be_v the_o only_a scandalous_a part_n of_o our_o passive_a obedience_n to_o be_v not_o only_o silent_a but_o content_v with_o a_o oc_n n_o of_o our_o p_o r_n which_o be_v not_o forfeit_v nor_o forfeitable_a to_o any_o worldly_a power_n whatsoever_o it_o may_v perhaps_o be_v here_o no_o improper_a question_n to_o ask_v what_o this_o gentleman_n mean_v by_o so_o warm_a a_o application_n to_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o clergy_n whether_o he_o will_v have_v they_o take_v heart_n upon_o the_o matter_n and_o have_v so_o redoubt_a a_o champion_n to_o lead_v they_o on_o like_o true_a missionary_n see_v what_o they_o can_v do_v to_o raise_v up_o a_o crusade_n against_o these_o wicked_a magistrate_n who_o so_o unwarrantable_o usurp_v upon_o the_o church_n neither_o forfeit_v nor_o forfeitable_a power_n at_o least_o thus_o far_o it_o be_v plain_a he_o have_v go_v towards_o it_o that_o as_o he_o have_v before_o show_v the_o church_n to_o be_v out_o of_o the_o protection_n of_o the_o prince_n so_o he_o will_v by_o and_o by_o declare_v the_o prince_n to_o be_v out_o of_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n and_o by_o both_o authentical_o qualify_v for_o a_o holy_a war_n to_o be_v make_v upon_o he_o for_o thus_o he_o go_v on_o p._n 122._o can_v a_o claim_n of_o a_o oppressive_a supremacy_n be_v deem_v a_o glorious_a jewel_n in_o a_o christian_a crown_n which_o if_o exercise_v must_v of_o necessity_n forfeit_v the_o king_n salvation_n and_o be_v it_o not_o a_o dangerous_a complaisance_n in_o priest_n to_o fan_v such_o a_o ambition_n as_o must_v end_n in_o the_o ruin_n of_o the_o church_n the_o priesthood_n and_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o prince_n which_o the_o liberty_n and_o power_n hierarchical_a be_v design_v to_o convert_n direct_v and_o preserve_v but_o still_o it_o may_v be_v doubt_v how_o far_o he_o account_v the_o king_n supremacy_n to_o be_v oppressive_a that_o the_o whole_a act_n of_o the_o submission_n of_o the_o clergy_n to_o king_n henry_n the_o viiith_o fall_v under_o this_o censure_n we_o have_v already_o see_v in_o short_a all_o that_o he_o think_v fit_a to_o be_v allow_v to_o the_o christian_a prince_n 124._o be_v this_o that_o the_o church_n be_v
oblige_v to_o acquaint_v he_o with_o her_o desire_n reason_n place_n season_n and_o necessary_n of_o convening_n to_o petition_v his_o leave_n and_o favour_n his_o inspection_n assistance_n and_o succour_n to_o the_o piety_n of_o her_o design_n to_o secure_v he_o of_o her_o fidelity_n to_o all_o his_o proper_a honour_n and_o interest_n that_o they_o will_v keep_v within_o ecclesiastical_a concern_v and_o do_v all_o thing_n open_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o good_a of_o soul_n in_o the_o unity_n order_n and_o purity_n of_o the_o church_n preserve_v by_o the_o rule_n of_o catholic_n and_o canonical_a communion_n and_o this_o under_o the_o guard_n and_o watch_n of_o temporal_a power_n well_o but_o what_o if_o the_o prince_n shall_v not_o approve_v of_o the_o reason_n that_o be_v offer_v to_o he_o for_o their_o assemble_v nor_o think_v either_o the_o time_n convenient_a or_o the_o place_n proper_a and_o shall_v thereupon_o refuse_v they_o the_o leave_v they_o petition_v for_o what_o if_o he_o shall_v think_v their_o design_n not_o to_o be_v so_o pious_a as_o they_o pretend_v but_o rather_o to_o have_v a_o great_a alloy_n of_o humane_a passion_n and_o prejudice_n in_o they_o what_o if_o he_o shall_v differ_v with_o they_o in_o his_o notion_n of_o what_o be_v his_o proper_a honour_n and_o interest_n may_v he_o in_o such_o a_o case_n forbid_v they_o to_o meet_v may_v he_o assign_v they_o some_o other_o time_n or_o place_n or_o command_v they_o not_o to_o meddle_v with_o such_o cause_n or_o person_n as_o he_o shall_v judge_v his_o honour_n or_o interest_n to_o be_v concern_v in_o what_o if_o what_o they_o call_v ecclesiastical_a concern_v shall_v chance_v to_o have_v a_o influence_n upon_o civil_a affair_n and_o that_o instead_o of_o preserve_v they_o shall_v act_n so_o as_o to_o divide_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o church_n may_v he_o by_o the_o temporal_a power_n which_o be_v still_o leave_v to_o he_o put_v a_o stop_n to_o their_o proceed_n or_o annul_v their_o act_n or_o receive_v and_o appeal_v from_o their_o sentence_n on_o the_o contrary_a he_o flat_o tell_v we_o 109._o that_o all_o the_o power_n of_o call_v moderate_v at_o and_o dissolve_v synod_n of_o confirm_v their_o act_n or_o suspend_v their_o sentence_n be_v negative_a of_o those_o liberty_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n which_o she_o once_o claim_v as_o of_o divine_a right_n and_o of_o which_o he_o before_o affirm_v that_o they_o be_v neither_o forfeit_v nor_o forfeitable_a and_o here_o then_o we_o have_v a_o plain_a account_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o this_o author_n in_o the_o case_n before_o us._n i_o be_v willing_a the_o rather_o to_o put_v it_o together_o in_o this_o place_n that_o so_o by_o compare_v it_o with_o what_o be_v say_v in_o the_o follow_a collection_n the_o reader_n may_v be_v the_o better_o enable_v to_o judge_v who_o have_v act_v more_o sincere_o upon_o the_o church_n of_o england_n principle_n i_o in_o assert_v the_o king_n supremacy_n as_o by_o law_n establish_v or_o he_o in_o his_o violent_a and_o impetuous_a oppose_v of_o it_o or_o if_o this_o shall_v not_o be_v think_v enough_o to_o convince_v those_o who_o have_v be_v dissatisfy_v with_o my_o undertake_n how_o close_o i_o have_v keep_v to_o our_o church_n doctrine_n let_v i_o then_o for_o a_o final_a proof_n desire_v this_o author_n in_o his_o next_o attempt_n to_o satisfy_v the_o world_n in_o these_o 3_o point_n one_a let_v he_o show_v wherein_o i_o have_v ascribe_v any_o more_o or_o great_a power_n to_o the_o prince_n than_o our_o law_n have_v give_v he_o and_o our_o convocation_n and_o clergy_n have_v either_o express_o or_o by_o a_o plain_a consequence_n approve_v of_o and_o declare_v to_o be_v his_o right_n 2_o let_v he_o tell_v we_o wherein_o the_o opinion_n here_o advance_v by_o he_o differ_v from_o that_o of_o our_o missionary_n papist_n and_o jesuit_n who_o have_v write_v against_o the_o supremacy_n and_o against_o who_o our_o divine_n have_v so_o learned_o maintain_v the_o king_n prerogative_n 3_o let_v he_o inform_v we_o whether_o any_o writer_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n since_o the_o pass_n of_o this_o convocation_n act_n have_v ever_o make_v any_o such_o exception_n as_o he_o have_v here_o do_v against_o it_o and_o charge_v it_o as_o destructive_a of_o the_o divine_a right_n and_o power_n of_o the_o church_n and_o who_o those_o writer_n be_v and_o in_o what_o book_n they_o have_v do_v it_o this_o be_v do_v if_o it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o any_o thing_n i_o have_v run_v into_o a_o undue_a extreme_a and_o by_o that_o mean_n derogate_a from_o the_o church_n authority_n i_o shall_v then_o be_v ready_a to_o comply_v with_o the_o advice_n he_o have_v give_v i_o and_o not_o only_o humble_v myself_o before_o god_n for_o the_o wrong_n i_o have_v do_v the_o church_n 177._o but_o public_o make_v a_o reparation_n of_o they_o but_o if_o upon_o the_o enquiry_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o i_o have_v affirm_v nothing_o but_o what_o the_o law_n establish_v our_o convocation_n have_v agree_v to_o and_o our_o most_o eminent_a clergy_n man_n have_v constant_o defend_v i_o must_v then_o be_v excuse_v if_o i_o look_v upon_o myself_o to_o have_v do_v no_o more_o than_o in_o duty_n i_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v and_o by_o oppose_v whereof_o i_o take_v this_o gentleman_n not_o only_o to_o have_v act_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n and_o the_o article_n and_o canon_n of_o the_o church_n can._n but_o to_o have_v actual_o incur_v a_o excommunication_n for_o such_o his_o offence_n have_v say_v thus_o much_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o subject_a of_o my_o late_a treatise_n i_o shall_v add_v but_o little_o more_o concern_v the_o design_n which_o be_v here_o lay_v for_o the_o answer_v of_o it_o as_o this_o author_n have_v order_v the_o matter_n it_o be_v become_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o he_o to_o go_v on_o with_o it_o for_o have_v charge_v i_o with_o violate_v the_o most_o important_a truth_n of_o principle_n and_o history_n preface_n have_v tell_v the_o world_n that_o i_o have_v treat_v the_o synod_n of_o the_o church_n with_o spite_n and_o contumely_n and_o recommend_v the_o great_a slavery_n of_o she_o to_o the_o appetite_n of_o the_o civil_a power_n and_o every_o part_n of_o which_o charge_n do_v i_o conceive_v accuse_v i_o of_o no_o small_a crime_n the_o weight_n of_o this_o accusation_n must_v fall_v very_o heavy_a either_o upon_o he_o or_o i_o and_o i_o look_v upon_o myself_o as_o concern_v to_o tell_v he_o that_o i_o do_v expect_v he_o shall_v make_v it_o good_a or_o honest_o own_o that_o he_o can_v do_v it_o only_o for_o his_o own_o sake_n as_o well_o as_o i_o and_o which_o be_v yet_o more_o for_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o those_o who_o shall_v think_v fit_a to_o interest_n themselves_o in_o this_o controversy_n some_o few_o thing_n there_o be_v which_o i_o will_v here_o recommend_v to_o he_o and_o they_o be_v such_o as_o in_o my_o apprehension_n ought_v not_o to_o be_v think_v at_o all_o unreasonable_a by_o he_o and_o one_a since_o this_o debate_n however_o manage_v must_v be_v likely_a to_o run_v out_o into_o a_o considerable_a length_n i_o will_v desire_v he_o not_o to_o increase_v the_o necessary_a bulk_n of_o it_o by_o allege_v passage_n out_o of_o the_o ancient_a father_n to_o prove_v that_o which_o neither_o of_o we_o make_v any_o doubt_n of_o thus_o p._n 160._o he_o produce_v the_o authority_n of_o athanasius_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o nicene_n father_n be_v not_o constrain_v by_o any_o force_n that_o be_v lay_v upon_o they_o to_o condemn_v arius_n but_o do_v it_o free_o and_o of_o their_o own_o accord_n now_o this_o i_o allow_v to_o be_v very_o true_a but_o can_v help_v think_v it_o to_o be_v in_o our_o present_a case_n very_o little_a to_o the_o purpose_n and_o p._n 162._o he_o cite_v a_o much_o large_a proof_n out_o of_o gregory_n nazianzen_n the_o appositeness_n of_o which_o to_o our_o debate_n i_o can_v yet_o imagine_v unless_o it_o be_v that_o he_o think_v all_o greek_a to_o be_v equal_o pertinent_a to_o most_o reader_n in_o which_o he_o be_v certain_o in_o the_o right_n 2_o i_o will_v entreat_v he_o not_o to_o insist_v upon_o any_o testimony_n of_o antiquity_n which_o have_v be_v already_o allege_v again_o and_o again_o by_o harding_n and_o stapleton_n
