shall_v name_v you_o but_o one_o text_n more_o and_o that_o be_v in_o the_o 2_o thes_n 1.7_o 8._o when_o the_o lord_n jesus_n shall_v be_v reveal_v from_o heaven_n with_o his_o mighty_a angel_n in_o flame_a fire_n take_v vengeance_n on_o they_o that_o know_v not_o god_n take_v notice_n i_o pray_v you_o that_o one_o of_o the_o two_o great_a sin_n which_o christ_n will_v come_v to_o punish_v with_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o confidence_n be_v the_o name_n of_o god_n you_o know_v that_o in_o a_o very_a great_a number_n of_o place_n the_o lord_n have_v manifest_v himself_o a_o god_n of_o mercy_n and_o love_n yea_o a_o sin-for-giving_a god_n and_o a_o gracious_a god_n but_o i_o shall_v name_v you_o but_o one_o text_n for_o this_o exod._n 34.6_o the_o lord_n there_o proclaim_v his_o own_o name_n by_o which_o he_o will_v be_v know_v for_o ever_o jehova_n strong_a merciful_a and_o gracious_a etc._n etc._n and_o you_o must_v know_v that_o god_n be_v not_o one_o thing_n &_o his_o name_n another_o neither_o be_v he_o one_o and_o his_o mind_n intention_n and_o decree_n or_o desire_n another_o but_o he_o be_v unchangeable_o &_o eternal_o the_o same_o for_o ever_o now_o i_o pray_v you_o consider_v it_o grace_n and_o mercy_n be_v not_o quality_n in_o god_n but_o in_o he_o it_o be_v nature_n and_o it_o be_v his_o essence_n and_o unchangeable_a be_v and_o therefore_o he_o do_v not_o name_n and_o be_v and_o therefore_o such_o person_n as_o will_v not_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o that_o choose_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_v and_o turn_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n into_o soul_n stand_v in_o need_n of_o thus_o belove_v a_o know_a soul_n will_v be_v able_a to_o rest_v up_o on_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n although_o he_o see_v nothing_o at_o all_o but_o unworthiness_n in_o himself_o i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o every_o one_o that_o know_v a_o little_a can_v do_v it_o but_o he_o that_o know_v what_o may_v be_v know_v with_o diligent_a search_n and_o therefore_o when_o you_o see_v your_o soul_n in_o distress_n and_o anguish_n of_o spirit_n and_o dare_v not_o believe_v you_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o although_o all_o that_o which_o they_o say_v against_o themselves_o be_v never_o so_o true_a and_o much_o more_o yet_o that_o be_v not_o the_o cause_n wherefore_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o their_o ignorance_n of_o god_n be_v great_a number_n among_o we_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o thing_n altogether_o but_o further_o this_o add_v to_o the_o sin_n that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o mean_n now_o more_o than_o have_v be_v former_o to_o bring_v man_n to_o knowledge_n and_o it_o be_v altogether_o neglect_v or_o else_o hearken_v to_o so_o careless_o that_o the_o word_n be_v preach_v to_o the_o most_o of_o man_n altogether_o in_o vain_a i_o be_o persuade_v that_o if_o there_o be_v never_o a_o word_n of_o god_n write_v at_o all_o nor_o any_o other_o mean_v to_o know_v the_o lord_n by_o leave_v we_o but_o only_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n if_o that_o these_o work_n of_o his_o be_v humble_o and_o wise_o consider_v of_o they_o will_v reveal_v more_o of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n than_o the_o most_o part_n among_o we_o do_v know_v notwithstanding_o the_o light_n of_o the_o glorious_a gospel_n of_o christ_n shine_v a_o among_o we_o o_o therefore_o consider_v you_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n how_o inexcusable_a and_o horrible_a your_o sin_n be_v what_o mean_v you_o to_o let_v the_o love_n of_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n sin_n and_o vanity_n eat_v out_o the_o love_n of_o god_n yea_o and_o of_o your_o own_o soul_n to_o o_o how_o will_v you_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n one_o day_n that_o have_v slight_v the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o well_o let_v we_o pity_v these_o man_n and_o mourn_v for_o they_o if_o we_o can_v persuade_v they_o to_o seek_v after_o god_n i_o be_o afraid_a the_o saint_n do_v not_o with_o jeremiah_n weep_v in_o secret_a for_o these_o man_n nor_o with_o david_n gush_v out_o river_n of_o tear_n for_o the_o sin_n they_o live_v in_o and_o the_o misery_n that_o will_v come_v upon_o they_o o_o let_v we_o pray_v for_o they_o and_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o earnest_a by_o how_o much_o they_o be_v less_o sensible_a of_o there_o misery_n use_v 2._o second_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n have_v so_o gracious_a a_o tendency_n to_o bring_v a_o person_n to_o eternal_a life_n then_o be_v sure_a you_o make_v your_o child_n and_o those_o that_o be_v under_o your_o charge_n know_v the_o lord_n beloved_n i_o speak_v to_o those_o that_o know_v he_o themselves_o i_o say_v to_o you_o make_v he_o know_v to_o all_o you_o can_v or_o to_o all_o you_o have_v a_o opportunity_n to_o speak_v to_o let_v your_o child_n and_o servant_n know_v what_o a_o god_n of_o mercy_n he_o be_v yea_o of_o free_a grace_n that_o look_v to_o find_v no_o holiness_n nor_o repentance_n no_o nor_o one_o good_a qualification_n in_o those_o he_o seek_v to_o save_v but_o he_o will_v work_v all_o these_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o those_o that_o come_v unto_o he_o although_o they_o be_v never_o so_o bad_a that_o will_v not_o hinder_v their_o acceptation_n with_o god_n if_o so_o be_v they_o be_v but_o willing_a to_o be_v
knowledge_n of_o god_n for_o if_o you_o will_v have_v grace_n and_o strength_n to_o mortify_v sin_n you_o must_v go_v to_o christ_n for_o it_o and_o if_o you_o go_v to_o he_o it_o must_v be_v by_o child_n of_o god_n and_o that_o all_o the_o promse_n belong_v unto_o he_o but_o then_o when_o his_o old_a lust_n appear_v again_o and_o take_v hold_v on_o he_o than_o he_o fall_v to_o utter_v despair_n and_o conclude_v that_o he_o be_v but_o a_o hypocrite_n at_o the_o best_a and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o he_o and_o one_o day_n he_o think_v it_o be_v a_o duty_n to_o believe_v and_o another_o day_n he_o think_v there_o be_v no_o ground_n for_o he_o so_o to_o do_v and_o thus_o the_o poot_n soul_n be_v unstable_a and_o toss_v like_o a_o ship_n in_o a_o tempest_n one_o while_o mount_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o another_o while_n throw_v down_o into_o the_o deep_a and_o melt_v a_o way_n with_o trouble_n but_o now_o the_o soul_n that_o know_v god_n and_o do_v see_v in_o he_o a_o ground_n to_o believe_v at_o the_o first_o without_o any_o work_n of_o righteousness_n do_v beforehand_o and_o that_o know_v jesus_n christ_n come_v to_o save_v from_o sin_n and_o to_o give_v repentance_n as_o well_o as_o eternal_a life_n and_o do_v at_o the_o first_o cast_v himself_o upon_o he_o not_o as_o a_o saint_n but_o as_o a_o sinner_n this_o man_n if_o he_o shall_v fall_v as_o though_o some_o shall_v wrest_v it_o to_o their_o own_o destruction_n three_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n will_v carry_v a_o man_n through_o the_o worst_a of_o trouble_n if_o he_o shall_v come_v into_o job_n case_n that_o his_o wife_n shall_v be_v strange_a and_o his_o child_n and_o estate_n sweep_v away_o and_o his_o godly_a friend_n turn_v his_o enemy_n yet_o will_v he_o be_v able_a to_o say_v with_o he_o though_o he_o kill_v i_o yet_o i_o will_v and_o i_o can_v trust_v in_o he_o for_o i_o know_v my_o redeemer_n live_v thus_o when_o a_o man_n can_v say_v with_o paul_n i_o know_v who_o i_o have_v believe_v by_o be_v able_a to_o see_v the_o power_n wisdom_n truth_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n it_o will_v be_v such_o a_o rock_n for_o he_o to_o set_v his_o foot_n upon_o that_o will_v keep_v he_o from_o sink_v in_o the_o worst_a of_o time_n four_o a_o man_n that_o know_v god_n will_v serve_v he_o with_o that_o delight_n that_o another_o man_n can_v do_v a_o ignorant_a man_n may_v be_v convince_v that_o it_o be_v a_o duty_n to_o hear_v and_o to_o pray_v and_o the_o like_a but_o he_o have_v no_o comfort_n in_o these_o ordinance_n but_o yet_o he_o use_v they_o because_o he_o dare_v do_v no_o otherwise_o but_o a_o man_n that_o know_v god_n see_v such_o a_o beauty_n in_o god_n that_o he_o go_v to_o seek_v he_o with_o much_o delight_n he_o know_v they_o be_v mean_n appoint_v of_o god_n to_o bring_v he_o into_o near_a communion_n with_o he_o and_o to_o give_v he_o a_o more_o glorious_a sight_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o work_n well_o pease_v to_o he_o and_o he_o go_v about_o it_o with_o as_o much_o content_a as_o man_n use_v to_o go_v to_o their_o recreation_n but_o the_o other_o go_v to_o the_o same_o work_n as_o one_o go_v to_o a_o trade_n that_o he_o be_v set_v to_o against_o his_o will_n he_o do_v it_o untoward_o and_o unwilling_o and_o will_v get_v from_o it_o if_o he_o can_v and_o so_o will_v the_o man_n from_o duty_n that_o know_v not_o god_n if_o he_o can_v but_o find_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v the_o rebuke_n of_o his_o own_o conscience_n now_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o make_v it_o your_o first_o &_o great_a work_n to_o get_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n with_o all_o diligence_n seek_v for_o it_o for_o the_o prize_n thereof_o be_v great_a than_o silver_n choice_a gold_n or_o ruby_n therefore_o search_v for_o it_o more_o than_o for_o hide_a treasure_n there_o be_v two_o mean_n that_o i_o will_v direct_v you_o to_o make_v use_n of_o for_o the_o get_n of_o this_o knowledge_n the_o first_o be_v the_o consideration_n of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n if_o a_o man_n do_v but_o humble_o and_o wise_o observe_v his_o great_a work_n they_o will_v show_v forth_o much_o of_o his_o glory_n if_o you_o look_v to_o the_o heaven_n and_o consider_v what_o a_o great_a distance_n they_o be_v spread_v above_o the_o earth_n and_o compass_v it_o round_o about_o and_o see_v those_o glorious_a creature_n the_o sun_n moon_n and_o star_n roll_n about_o to_o serve_v poor_a worm_n and_o lump_n of_o clay_n how_o plain_o will_v they_o teach_v you_o that_o the_o creator_n of_o they_o be_v a_o god_n of_o infinite_a goodness_n for_o before_o ever_o he_o do_v create_v either_o they_o or_o the_o man_n for_o who_o sake_n they_o be_v create_v the_o lord_n do_v perfect_o understand_v all_o the_o wickedness_n that_o will_v in_o time_n be_v commit_v by_o every_o one_o of_o they_o and_o yet_o it_o do_v not_o hinder_v he_o in_o this_o great_a work_n but_o he_o have_v do_v it_o and_o continue_v to_o uphold_v it_o notwithstanding_o all_o that_o unworthiness_n that_o be_v find_v among_o the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o if_o you_o look_v to_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o sea_n and_o see_v they_o hang_v in_o a_o round_a lump_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o heaven_n cleave_v together_o and_o the_o water_n not_o overflow_n the_o earth_n this_o great_a work_n will_v tell_v you_o that_o the_o creator_n thereof_o be_v infinite_a in_o power_n wisdom_n and_o goodness_n and_o if_o you_o consider_v how_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o sea_n be_v store_v with_o variety_n of_o creature_n with_o several_a host_n of_o creature_n and_o yet_o not_o a_o man_n nor_o a_o beast_n nor_o a_o fish_n nor_o a_o fowl_n no_o worm_n nor_o any_o creature_n more_o nor_o less_o but_o god_n take_v care_v every_o day_n how_o they_o shall_v be_v feed_v the_o wild_a beast_n of_o the_o wilderness_n that_o no_o man_n take_v care_n of_o have_v there_o meat_n and_o there_o drink_v every_o day_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n oh_o how_o do_v these_o gracious_a act_n of_o his_o every_o day_n preach_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o great_a name_n to_o all_o consider_v man_n that_o will_v but_o set_v themselves_o to_o mind_n the_o great_a wisdom_n patience_n power_n truth_n
and_o pursue_v he_o for_o his_o life_n with_o open_a violence_n and_o this_o must_v other_o man_n expect_v as_o well_o as_o david_n if_o they_o be_v man_n of_o knowledge_n and_o walk_v wise_o and_o be_v like_a to_o be_v of_o use_n either_o in_o church_n or_o commonwealth_n those_o that_o be_v not_o sound_v at_o the_o core_n will_v endeavour_v to_o work_v they_o sorrow_n if_o this_o man_n say_v they_o know_v the_o people_n right_a so_o well_o and_o the_o magistrate_n duty_n so_o well_o and_o begin_v to_o talk_v thus_o he_o will_v soon_o get_v the_o power_n out_o of_o our_o hand_n down_o with_o he_o and_o so_o likewise_o if_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o speak_v of_o god_n or_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n to_o the_o comfort_n and_o edification_n of_o other_o a_o bad_a ministry_n will_v soon_o be_v devise_v something_o to_o work_v this_o man_n grief_n oh_o say_v they_o if_o this_o man_n get_v into_o credit_n with_o the_o people_n we_o shall_v soon_o grow_v into_o contempt_n therefore_o let_v we_o remove_v he_o further_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a and_o yet_o although_o this_o and_o much_o more_o than_o this_o be_v true_a knowledge_n though_o it_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o cross_n yet_o be_v it_o a_o jewel_n worth_a get_n with_o labour_n and_o travel_n which_o although_o it_o may_v cost_v a_o man_n dear_a yet_o it_o will_v bear_v its_o own_o charge_n when_o it_o be_v get_v another_o objection_n may_v arise_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o some_o from_o the_o 1_o cor._n 8.1_o knowledge_n puff_v up_o but_o charity_n edifi_v this_o may_v seem_v to_o cast_v some_o contempt_n upon_o knowledge_n therefore_o i_o must_v take_v a_o little_a time_n to_o open_v this_o text_n unto_o you_o i_o therefore_o entreat_v you_o to_o look_v into_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o 7_o chapter_n and_o there_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o corinth_n write_v a_o epistle_n or_o letter_n to_o paul_n for_o satisfaction_n in_o some_o case_n of_o conscience_n among_o other_o this_o be_v one_o that_o some_o of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o corinth_n go_v to_o the_o idol_n temple_n &_o together_o with_o the_o idolater_n do_v eat_v of_o the_o the_o meat_n sacrifice_v to_o idol_n to_o the_o offence_n of_o some_o and_o seandal_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o as_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o the_o apostle_n in_o that_o 8_o chapter_n lay_v down_o their_o argument_n which_o they_o make_v use_v of_o for_o the_o defence_n of_o this_o practice_n and_o there_o in_o that_o place_n he_o answer_v they_o first_o upon_o their_o own_o ground_n that_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v they_o that_o indeed_o they_o do_v proceed_v upon_o ground_n of_o knowledge_n as_o it_o be_v suppose_v by_o they_o they_o do_v to_o eat_v of_o that_o meat_n yet_o there_o practice_n must_v needs_o be_v evil_a the_o unbelieved_a corinth_n still_o be_v harden_v by_o this_o mean_n in_o their_o old_a sinful_a way_n of_o eat_v it_o to_o the_o defile_n of_o their_o conscience_n and_o the_o weak_a brethren_n likewise_o will_v be_v draw_v upon_o doubtful_a ground_n to_o do_v it_o to_o the_o wound_n of_o their_o conscience_n and_o this_o paul_n tell_v they_o can_v not_o stand_v with_o charity_n and_o give_v they_o to_o understand_v that_o a_o knowledge_n separate_v from_o charity_n or_o that_o act_v in_o opposition_n to_o charity_n will_v prove_v of_o no_o better_a use_n but_o to_o puff_n up_o the_o heart_n of_o he_o in_o who_o it_o be_v for_o when_o man_n will_v imply_v their_o part_n to_o outwit_n the_o weak_a and_o bring_v crafty_a argument_n to_o defend_v sinful_a action_n it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o such_o a_o knowledge_n as_o this_o tend_v to_o swell_v and_o puff_n up_o the_o heart_n of_o he_o that_o thus_o abuse_v his_o wit_n now_o although_o the_o corinth_n do_v plead_v ground_n of_o knowledge_n for_o their_o practice_n and_o the_o apostle_n there_o give_v it_o the_o same_o name_n yet_o you_o may_v see_v by_o what_o follow_v in_o the_o 9_o &_o 10_o chapter_n that_o he_o do_v not_o account_v their_o practice_n their_o light_n and_o their_o knowledge_n but_o their_o sin_n and_o their_o error_n for_o say_v he_o in_o the_o 10_o chap._n flee_v from_o idolatry_n and_o if_o it_o be_v idolatry_n it_o can_v not_o be_v knowledge_n and_o there_o the_o apostle_n bring_v clear_a instance_n to_o prove_v it_o so_o one_o from_o the_o lord_n supper_n there_o he_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v that_o together_o be_v one_o communion_n one_o bread_n and_o that_o whosoever_o eat_v of_o israel_n sacrifice_n be_v partaker_n of_o their_o altar_n and_o tell_v they_o it_o be_v the_o table_n of_o devil_n that_o they_o eat_v of_o and_o that_o they_o can_v not_o eat_v of_o it_o and_o of_o the_o lord_n table_n both_o bid_v they_o not_o to_o provoke_v the_o lord_n ask_v they_o if_o they_o be_v strong_a than_o he_o so_o that_o whosoever_o mind_v these_o argument_n and_o consider_v wherefore_o they_o be_v bring_v will_v see_v that_o here_o be_v nothing_o against_o knowledge_n but_o against_o a_o proud_a conceit_n of_o it_o for_o indeed_o the_o more_o any_o man_n know_v of_o god_n the_o humble_a he_o will_v be_v and_o when_o you_o see_v any_o man_n proud_a and_o puff_v up_o with_o his_o knowledge_n you_o may_v be_v sure_a he_o be_v no_o more_o indeed_o &_o intruth_o but_o a_o conceit_a fool_n therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o take_v heed_n to_o use_v all_o the_o mean_v the_o scripture_n do_v prescribe_v for_o the_o get_n of_o knowledge_n hear_v pray_v read_v and_o make_v the_o word_n your_o daily_a meditation_n david_n have_v more_o understanding_n than_o his_o teacher_n by_o this_o mean_n therefore_o use_v it_o and_o whatsoever_o you_o can_v find_v in_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n to_o be_v a_o mean_v prescribe_v for_o the_o get_n and_o increase_v of_o it_o i_o beseech_v you_o use_v with_o all_o faithfulness_n diligence_n and_o humility_n and_o he_o that_o thus_o seek_v it_o shall_v find_v it_o and_o he_o that_o find_v it_o findeth_z the_o ready_a way_n to_o eternal_a life_n and_o so_o much_o for_o this_o use_n use_v 4._o i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o the_o next_o use_n and_o that_o must_v be_v a_o word_n of_o exhortation_n to_o all_o those_o that_o know_v god_n or_o profess_v to_o know_v he_o belove_v there_o be_v many_o duty_n lie_v upon_o you_o wherein_o you_o be_v eminent_o concern_v i_o shall_v lay_v some_o few_o of_o they_o before_o you_o at_o this_o time_n the_o first_o be_v this_o if_o you_o know_v much_o or_o any_o thing_n at_o all_o take_v heed_n of_o abuse_v your_o knowledge_n to_o the_o service_n of_o any_o sin_n there_o be_v several_a way_n by_o which_o this_o may_v be_v do_v first_o beware_v you_o do_v not_o use_v your_o knowledge_n to_o defend_v sin_n or_o to_o make_v fair_a pretence_n for_o it_o when_o man_n pervert_v there_o knowledge_n for_o so_o base_a a_o end_n as_o that_o be_v and_o endeavour_v to_o turn_v the_o simple-bearted_n out_o of_o the_o way_n by_o make_v excuse_n either_o for_o bad_a principle_n or_o for_o evil_a practice_n it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a sin_n when_o a_o man_n use_v knowledge_n to_o corrupt_v himself_o or_o other_o and_o by_o that_o very_a mean_n that_o tend_v to_o lead_v he_o to_o eternal_a life_n he_o post_v the_o fast_a towards_o hell_n how_o sinful_a and_o provoke_a must_v this_o need_v be_v to_o the_o lord_n the_o more_o precious_a any_o thing_n be_v the_o more_o abominable_a it_o be_v to_o abuse_v it_o next_o take_v heed_n you_o make_v not_o knowledge_n a_o stalk_a horse_n for_o pride_n or_o covetousness_n or_o any_o other_o curse_a lust_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v preach_v christ_n gospel_n never_o so_o painful_o and_o yet_o his_o secret_a end_n be_v the_o advanemcent_a of_o his_o own_o honour_n this_o man_n serve_v pride_n and_o vain_a glory_n in_o what_o he_o do_v and_o not_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o so_o likewise_o if_o a_o man_n preach_v the_o truth_n never_o so_o diligent_o all_o his_o day_n but_o do_v it_o for_o a_o live_n sake_n and_o not_o for_o the_o work_v sake_n he_o will_v be_v find_v in_o what_o he_o have_v do_v a_o servant_n of_o covetousness_n and_o not_o of_o christ_n and_o when_o man_n can_v go_v from_o place_n to_o place_n for_o tenor_n twenty_o pound_n a_o year_n more_o wage_n it_o be_v in_o my_o judgement_n such_o a_o sad_a sell_v of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n for_o money_n if_o gift_a they_o be_v that_o it_o will_v make_v a_o man_n tremble_v to_o think_v of_o it_o i_o do_v not_o speak_v as_o if_o wage_n be_v altogether_o unlawful_a if_o it_o be_v christ_n wage_n a_o reward_n
