they_o this_o doctrine_n will_v dash_v all_o their_o vain_a hope_n they_o that_o believe_v will_v submit_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n they_o that_o believe_v be_v effectual_o persuade_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o father_n in_o the_o promise_n and_o they_o be_v pluck_v away_o from_o their_o lust_n and_o corruption_n but_o these_o take_v up_o arm_n and_o be_v in_o open_a defiance_n for_o their_o sin_n they_o that_o believe_v be_v humble_v for_o faith_n will_v not_o grow_v but_o in_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v humble_v and_o content_v to_o part_v with_o sin_n and_o self_n and_o all_o but_o these_o keep_v both_o sin_n and_o self_n and_o all_o they_o that_o have_v faith_n rest_n upon_o the_o freeness_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o depart_v from_o their_o corruption_n and_o only_o cleave_v unto_o and_o rest_n upon_o christ_n but_o these_o rest_n upon_o their_o corruption_n and_o go_v from_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o grace_n few_o of_o these_o people_n come_v into_o the_o godliness_n in_o his_o life_n he_o have_v practice_n without_o any_o pith_n and_o a_o course_n without_o any_o kernel_n and_o he_o perform_v superficial_a duty_n without_o any_o strength_n all_o his_o duty_n be_v as_o dry_a as_o a_o chip_n only_o he_o carry_v all_o out_o with_o this_o he_o be_v wise_a and_o learned_a and_o judicious_a and_o this_o answer_v all_o if_o he_o do_v omit_v or_o neglect_v and_o yet_o all_o fall_v short_a of_o this_o bless_a work_n of_o faith_n first_o the_o temporary_a believer_n we_o take_v he_o as_o the_o low_a form_n a_o man_n be_v call_v a_o temporary_a bleever_n that_o believe_v for_o a_o time_n and_o be_v hot_a at_o first_o hand_n and_o admirable_a fierce_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o truth_n for_o the_o present_a push_n but_o he_o slide_v off_o and_o because_o the_o thorn_n choke_v it_o so_o this_o man_n have_v his_o full_a ear_n and_o be_v as_o green_a as_o a_o leek_n you_o will_v fast_o and_o pray_v so_o will_v he_o you_o will_v profess_v so_o heart_n be_v naught_o then_o say_v he_o all_o the_o minister_n under_o heaven_n shall_v not_o make_v i_o believe_v it_o but_o when_o he_o can_v say_v nothing_o against_o the_o truth_n he_o will_v keep_v his_o hold_n still_o and_o he_o will_v not_o believe_v it_o thus_o you_o see_v this_o man_n at_o his_o full_a breadth_n and_o height_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o plough_n that_o go_v to_o plough_v up_o a_o thorny_a tree_n they_o tug_v and_o pull_v and_o make_v the_o trace_n fly_v and_o break_v the_o plough_n but_o the_o tree_n stand_v still_o it_o will_v not_o yield_v so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o wretched_a hypocrite_n all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n and_o all_o the_o truth_n can_v prevail_v with_o he_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o stand_v to_o it_o and_o not_o to_o believe_v it_o will_v thou_o not_o now_o believe_v it_o well_o thou_o shall_v believe_v it_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o hell_n past_a hope_n past_a help_n thou_o will_v believe_v it_o then_o thus_o the_o thorn_n choke_v the_o word_n that_o be_v strangle_v the_o truth_n and_o stop_v the_o breath_n of_o the_o truth_n so_o he_o say_v i_o pass_v not_o i_o believe_v it_o not_o this_o stifle_v all_o reason_n and_o the_o power_n of_o all_o scripture_n that_o all_o prevail_v not_o with_o he_o nor_o take_v no_o place_n in_o he_o to_o make_v he_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o be_v a_o grower_n in_o the_o truth_n when_o he_o come_v after_o he_o and_o that_o he_o may_v not_o fail_v as_o the_o former_a have_v do_v the_o fail_v of_o this_o man_n appear_v in_o two_o particular_n first_o he_o fail_v in_o the_o point_n of_o humiliation_n he_o be_v not_o right_o humble_v as_o in_o that_o place_n of_o the_o parable_n he_o have_v horror_n of_o heart_n enough_o for_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o but_o not_o enough_o for_o the_o uprightness_n and_o sincerity_n of_o it_o he_o plough_v deep_a enough_o but_o he_o leave_v some_o thorn_n stand_v and_o he_o have_v some_o lust_n that_o his_o heart_n be_v more_o so_o that_o he_o leave_v some_o kind_n of_o dew_n and_o some_o remembrance_n of_o those_o glorious_a thing_n which_o be_v thus_o let_v in_o upon_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n insomuch_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v marvellous_o tickle_v and_o ravish_v with_o it_o i_o express_v it_o thus_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o water_n in_o a_o stand_a pool_n and_o the_o water_n that_o run_v through_o a_o pipe_n the_o stand_a water_n soak_v and_o go_v downward_o and_o settle_v inward_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o the_o water_n that_o pass_v by_o sudden_o leave_v only_o a_o little_a dew_n as_o namely_o that_o jesus_n christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n and_o that_o christ_n come_v to_o take_v away_o the_o iniquity_n of_o his_o servant_n this_o do_v pass_v by_o sudden_o and_o leave_v a_o little_a dew_n behind_o it_o so_o that_o he_o say_v oh_o this_o be_v good_a this_o be_v sweet_a i_o may_v be_v save_v too_o may_v i_o not_o oh_o i_o never_o hear_v a_o man_n speak_v so_o comfortable_o this_o word_n bedew_v the_o heart_n a_o little_a but_o it_o soak_v not_o down_o it_o go_v not_o to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o soul_n &_o therefore_o observe_v it_o this_o be_v a_o work_n which_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v have_v only_o observe_v thus_o much_o he_o sip_v of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n and_o make_v a_o meal_n of_o his_o corruption_n but_o the_o gracious_a man_n only_o sip_v of_o his_o corruption_n and_o make_v a_o meal_n of_o grace_n of_o holiness_n &_o mercy_n in_o christ_n look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o seed_n that_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o womb_n of_o a_o woman_n the_o seed_n be_v enough_o to_o beget_v some_o fruit_n but_o if_o the_o womb_n be_v a_o miscarry_v womb_n it_o come_v to_o nothing_o so_o it_o be_v between_o the_o stir_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a saint_n and_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n by_o the_o word_n and_o be_v able_a to_o moisten_v he_o but_o the_o heart_n miscarry_v in_o the_o work_n and_o resist_v and_o gainsay_v and_o never_o come_v to_o any_o good_a he_o never_o come_v to_o be_v a_o faithful_a man_n right_o proportion_v whereas_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n work_v right_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n it_o make_v he_o a_o very_a proportionable_a christian_a the_o other_o remain_v but_o a_o confuse_a lump_n now_o see_v what_o this_o man_n may_v do_v when_o he_o come_v to_o this_o let_v he_o be_v thus_o bedew_v with_o this_o taste_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o faith_n and_o never_o have_v faith_n strengthen_v and_o root_v in_o he_o yet_o he_o will_v be_v very_o eager_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o marvellous_a constant_a in_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n because_o it_o be_v his_o delight_n and_o he_o will_v be_v marvellous_a painful_a to_o get_v the_o word_n for_o a_o man_n will_v do_v any_o thing_n to_o get_v his_o delight_n and_o he_o may_v be_v angry_a with_o such_o as_o will_v hinder_v he_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v his_o delight_n this_o a_o man_n may_v do_v and_o yet_o all_o come_v to_o nothing_o and_o so_o may_v perish_v everlasting_o for_o look_v what_o joy_n and_o delight_n will_v do_v for_o a_o push_n the_o same_o a_o carnal_a temporary_a may_v do_v but_o that_o this_o man_n will_v do_v all_o yet_o be_v damn_v when_o he_o have_v do_v thus_o much_o for_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o by_o scripture_n the_o reason_n that_o do_v confirm_v it_o beside_o many_o other_o the_o main_a argument_n be_v this_o there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o wretched_a man_n which_o will_v make_v he_o die_v rather_o than_o forgo_v his_o profession_n a_o man_n sturdy_o proud_a may_v give_v way_n to_o be_v burn_v and_o to_o die_v for_o faction_n etc._n etc._n he_o die_v only_o to_o content_v his_o own_o proud_a heart_n not_o because_o god_n require_v it_o and_o that_o god_n may_v be_v honour_v but_o only_o in_o sturdiness_n of_o heart_n and_o because_o he_o will_v die_v in_o that_o profession_n wherein_o he_o have_v be_v bring_v up_o second_o his_o falseness_n do_v appear_v in_o this_o howsoever_o affliction_n and_o persecution_n can_v pull_v he_o from_o the_o truth_n yet_o case_n and_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n and_o lust_n will_v suck_v out_o the_o heart_n these_o trouble_v he_o not_o because_o he_o have_v they_o not_o but_o when_o he_o have_v have_v they_o and_o feel_v the_o sweetness_n of_o they_o he_o be_v thereby_o overcome_v and_o so_o forsake_v religion_n and_o all_o thus_o the_o devil_n hit_v he_o in_o the_o right_a nick_n the_o devil_n can_v not_o damp_n he_o with_o trouble_n and_o with_o persecution_n and_o disgrace_n but_o the_o devil_n provide_v dainty_n for_o he_o and_o there_o he_o eat_v and_o surfeit_n and_o kill_v himself_o these_o take_v off_o the_o soul_n from_o christ_n when_o all_o the_o persecution_n in_o the_o world_n can_v daunt_v his_o hook_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o man_n the_o bait_n catch_v he_o when_o the_o hook_n can_v not_o we_o have_v a_o old_a parable_n of_o a_o traveller_n the_o wind_n though_o it_o blue_a and_o bluster_v yet_o it_o can_v not_o pull_v away_o his_o cloak_n but_o he_o hold_v it_o so_o much_o the_o fast_o but_o when_o the_o sun_n shine_v hot_a upon_o he_o he_o throw_v off_o his_o cloak_n and_o coat_n and_o all_o when_o a_o man_n have_v no_o honour_n than_o persecution_n make_v he_o hold_v the_o close_o to_o the_o truth_n but_o when_o the_o fine_a gleam_n of_o honour_n and_o profit_n come_v and_o a_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o into_o fool_n paradise_n he_o put_v off_o all_o religion_n and_o honesty_n the_o sturdy_a hypocrite_n may_v die_v for_o the_o truth_n and_o yet_o all_o out_o of_o a_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o a_o man_n that_o have_v be_v very_o forward_o in_o profession_n and_o have_v suffer_v much_o for_o the_o truth_n yet_o one_o man_n be_v pluck_v off_o from_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o truth_n by_o the_o world_n and_o he_o prove_v a_o muck-worme_n and_o the_o world_n eat_v out_o the_o power_n of_o that_o grace_n which_o he_o seem_v to_o have_v and_o another_o man_n be_v take_v by_o his_o base_a lust_n of_o adultery_n or_o the_o like_a their_o heart_n be_v as_o bad_a before_o but_o they_o never_o have_v these_o temptation_n before_o and_o therefore_o they_o abide_v trouble_n because_o these_o temptation_n come_v not_o and_o therefore_o when_o these_o come_v they_o decline_v and_o fall_v away_o and_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o those_o hindrance_n that_o do_v disinable_a a_o man_n from_o come_v to_o christ_n as_o have_v no_o title_n to_o he_o no_o interest_n in_o his_o mercy_n some_o hindrance_n do_v real_o withhold_v a_o man_n that_o he_o can_v rely_v upon_o and_o repair_v unto_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n other_o there_o be_v again_o that_o do_v not_o take_v away_o our_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n they_o do_v not_o hinder_v our_o title_n we_o have_v to_o christ_n but_o we_o hinder_v ourselves_o from_o come_v to_o christ_n because_o we_o be_v not_o wise_a to_o prevent_v these_o hindrance_n as_o we_o shall_v that_o make_v way_n for_o this_o conceit_n as_o first_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o spiritual_a thing_n between_o god_n and_o thy_o own_o soul_n to_o pray_v and_o reform_v belong_v to_o the_o outward_a practice_n but_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o closure_n of_o the_o heart_n with_o a_o entertain_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n and_o the_o give_a way_n of_o our_o soul_n thereunto_o now_o because_o man_n can_v see_v their_o faith_n therefore_o no_o man_n will_v yield_v but_o he_o do_v believe_v second_o man_n conceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o take_v of_o mercy_n from_o christ_n and_o say_v they_o be_v there_o any_o man_n that_o will_v not_o have_v mercy_n be_v it_o such_o a_o hard_a matter_n to_o receive_v favour_n offer_v or_o to_o take_v a_o gift_n when_o shall_v observe_v only_o what_o be_v foul_a on_o one_o man_n side_n and_o go_v no_o further_o the_o most_o upright_a man_n may_v be_v cast_v in_o the_o best_a case_n therefore_o the_o course_n of_o the_o court_n be_v he_o will_v hear_v the_o reason_n and_o witness_n on_o both_o side_n if_o there_o be_v any_o bond_n or_o evidence_n bring_v in_o or_o any_o argument_n to_o be_v make_v he_o will_v grief_n to_o thy_o soul_n and_o do_v it_o not_o lie_v heavy_a upon_o thy_o heart_n that_o thou_o can_v not_o walk_v exact_o before_o god_n oh_o say_v the_o soul_n it_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n that_o ever_o befall_v i_o and_o i_o will_v be_v content_a almost_o not_o to_o be_v that_o i_o may_v not_o be_v so_o sinful_a why_o then_o thou_o be_v a_o upright_a heart_a man_n now_o take_v thy_o soul_n on_o this_o side_n and_o hear_v the_o best_a of_o it_o look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n hand_n the_o back_n of_o his_o hand_n can_v take_v hold_n of_o a_o staff_n but_o his_o palm_n can_v if_o a_o man_n complain_v that_o he_o can_v hold_v a_o staff_n and_o turn_v the_o back_n of_o his_o hand_n no_o wonder_n turn_v the_o right_a side_n of_o your_o hand_n and_o then_o you_o will_v grasp_v it_o and_o hold_v it_o easy_o so_o turn_v the_o right_a side_n of_o your_o soul_n to_o the_o promise_n the_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v the_o staff_n that_o uphold_v our_o soul_n and_o our_o soul_n shall_v rest_v thereupon_o and_o trust_v thereunto_o now_o we_o turn_v the_o backside_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o the_o promise_n stubbornness_n great_a and_o doubt_n many_o and_o corruption_n fierce_a the_o wrong_a side_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v to_o the_o promise_n and_o this_o will_v hinder_v thou_o from_o come_v to_o and_o receive_v good_a from_o the_o word_n but_o thy_o soul_n see_v these_o and_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v free_v from_o these_o thy_o soul_n hate_v these_o and_o thyself_o for_o these_o this_o be_v the_o right_a side_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o lie_v level_v to_o the_o promise_n therefore_o attend_v the_o word_n and_o repair_v daily_o thereto_o and_o attend_v the_o better_a side_n do_v not_o attend_v to_o weakness_n and_o feebleness_n but_o to_o soundness_n and_o sincerity_n that_o be_v the_o first_o rule_n rule_n 2_o the_o second_o rule_n be_v this_o labour_v to_o have_v thy_o conscience_n settle_v and_o convict_o establish_v of_o that_o truth_n of_o that_o grace_n which_o reason_n now_o inform_v do_v entertain_v and_o the_o word_n do_v witness_v to_o be_v in_o thou_o labour_v to_o get_v thy_o conscience_n settle_v and_o establish_v powerful_o touch_v the_o truth_n that_o out_o of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o evidence_n thereof_o thou_o have_v see_v mark_v i_o say_v if_o there_o be_v any_o want_n of_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n and_o settle_v thereof_o to_o thy_o soul_n so_o that_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n do_v not_o come_v powerful_o in_o upon_o thy_o heart_n but_o there_o be_v some_o guilt_n of_o sin_n still_o remain_v and_o conscience_n still_o begin_v to_o accuse_v thou_o and_o condemn_v thou_o the_o truth_n be_v though_o reason_n be_v inform_v yet_o haply_o conscience_n will_v breed_v new_a broil_n at_o every_o turn_n and_o put_v in_o new_a plea_n and_o so_o nip_v disquiet_a and_o torment_v our_o heart_n in_o stagger_v our_o heart_n therefore_o as_o we_o must_v have_v our_o judgement_n inform_v out_o of_o the_o word_n that_o there_o be_v some_o good_a and_o soundness_n in_o our_o soul_n so_o we_o must_v get_v conscience_n persuade_v of_o it_o that_o conscience_n may_v be_v on_o our_o side_n and_o speak_v for_o we_o a_o man_n must_v deal_v in_o this_o case_n as_o a_o debtor_n if_o he_o be_v engage_v to_o many_o creditor_n the_o only_a way_n to_o get_v safety_n be_v to_o agree_v not_o with_o some_o but_o with_o all_o for_o if_o he_o agree_v with_o all_o but_o one_o that_o one_o may_v imprison_v
