in_o the_o great_a city_n where_o weekly_o there_o be_v take_v away_o ordinary_o three_o hundred_o person_n the_o monument_n and_o grave_n in_o every_o church_n and_o church-yard_n do_v not_o only_o evince_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o whereof_o no_o man_n of_o understand_a doubt_n but_o do_v incessant_o inculcate_v the_o remembrance_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v strange_a to_o see_v that_o this_o great_a truth_n whereof_o in_o the_o theory_n no_o man_n doubt_n be_v little_o consider_v or_o think_v upon_o by_o the_o most_o of_o mankind_n but_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o monition_n and_o remembrance_n of_o mortality_n the_o live_a lay_v 〈◊〉_d not_o to_o heart_n and_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o buâ—â—ness_n that_o little_o concern_v they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o concern_v in_o this_o common_a condition_n of_o mankind_n and_o as_o if_o the_o condition_n of_o mortality_n only_o concern_v they_o that_o actual_o die_v or_o be_v under_o the_o immediate_a harbinger_n of_o it_o some_o desperate_a or_o acute_a disease_n but_o concern_v not_o they_o that_o be_v at_o present_a in_o health_n or_o not_o under_o the_o stroke_n of_o a_o mortal_a sickness_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o inconsiderateness_n seem_v principal_o these_o 1._o that_o man_n be_v not_o willing_a to_o entertain_v this_o unwelcome_a thought_n of_o their_o own_o latter_a end_n the_o thought_n whereof_o be_v so_o unwelcome_a and_o troublesome_a a_o guest_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o blast_v and_o disparage_v all_o those_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o sense_n that_o this_o life_n afford_v whereby_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o death_n itself_o be_v unwelcome_a when_o it_o draw_v near_o so_o the_o thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o become_v as_o unwelcome_a as_o the_o thing_n itself_o 2._o a_o vain_a foolish_a conceit_n that_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o latter_a end_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o presage_n and_o invitation_n of_o it_o and_o upon_o this_o account_n i_o have_v know_v many_o superstitious_o and_o foolish_o to_o forbear_v the_o make_n of_o their_o will_n because_o it_o seem_v to_o they_o ominous_a and_o a_o presage_n of_o death_n whereas_o this_o consideration_n though_o it_o fit_v and_o prepare_v man_n for_o death_n it_o do_v no_o way_n hasten_v or_o presage_v it_o 3._o a_o great_a difficulty_n that_o ordinary_o attend_v our_o humane_a condition_n to_o think_v otherwise_o concern_v our_o condition_n than_o what_o at_o present_a we_o feel_v and_o find_v we_o be_v now_o in_o health_n and_o we_o can_v hardly_o bring_v our_o self_n to_o think_v that_o a_o time_n must_v and_o will_v come_v wherein_o we_o shall_v be_v sick_a we_o be_v now_o in_o life_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v hardly_o cast_v our_o thought_n into_o such_o a_o mould_n to_o think_v we_o shall_v die_v and_o hence_o it_o be_v true_a as_o the_o common_a proverb_n be_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n so_o old_a but_o he_o think_v he_o shall_v live_v a_o year_n long_o it_o be_v true_a this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o mankind_n to_o put_v far_o from_o we_o the_o evil_a day_n and_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o but_o this_o our_o way_n be_v our_o folly_n and_o one_o of_o the_o great_a occasion_n of_o those_o other_o folly_n that_o common_o attend_v our_o life_n and_o therefore_o the_o great_a mean_n to_o care_v this_o folly_n and_o to_o make_v we_o wise_a be_v wise_o to_o consider_v our_o latter_a end_n this_o wisdom_n appear_v in_o those_o excellent_a effect_n it_o produce_v which_o be_v general_o these_o two_o 1._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o live_v well_o 2._o it_o teach_v we_o to_o die_v easy_o for_o the_o former_a of_o these_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o latter_a end_n do_v in_o no_o sort_n make_v our_o life_n the_o short_a but_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mean_n to_o make_v our_o life_n the_o better_a 1._o it_o be_v a_o great_a monition_n and_o warning_n of_o we_o to_o avoid_v sin_n and_o a_o great_a mean_n to_o prevent_v it_o when_o i_o shall_v consider_v that_o certain_o i_o must_v die_v and_o i_o know_v not_o how_o soon_o why_o shall_v i_o commit_v those_o thing_n that_o if_o they_o hasten_v not_o my_o latter_a end_n yet_o they_o will_v make_v it_o more_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a by_o the_o reflection_n upon_o what_o i_o have_v do_v amiss_o i_o may_v die_v to_o morrow_n why_o shall_v i_o commit_v that_o evil_a that_o will_v then_o be_v gall_n and_o bitterness_n unto_o i_o will_v i_o do_v it_o if_o i_o be_v to_o die_v to_o morrow_n why_o shall_v i_o then_o do_v it_o to_o day_n perchance_o it_o may_v be_v the_o last_o moderation_n and_o sobriety_n the_o provision_n for_o our_o family_n relation_n and_o dependence_n without_o covetousness_n or_o anxiety_n the_o diligent_a and_o faithful_a walk_v in_o our_o calling_n and_o discharge_v thereof_o but_o there_o be_v also_o other_o business_n of_o great_a importance_n which_o yet_o be_v attainable_a without_o injure_v ourselves_o in_o those_o common_a concern_v of_o our_o life_n namely_o our_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o will_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o christ_n our_o repentance_n of_o sin_n past_a make_v and_o keep_v our_o peace_n with_o god_n acquaint_v ourselves_o with_o he_o live_v to_o his_o glory_n walk_v as_o in_o his_o presence_n pray_v to_o he_o learn_v to_o depend_v upon_o he_o rejoice_v in_o he_o walk_v and_o work_v while_o we_o have_v time_n and_o opportunity_n lest_o the_o night_n overtake_v we_o when_o we_o can_v work_v to_o gain_v oil_n in_o our_o lamp_n before_o the_o door_n be_v shut_v and_o if_o man_n will_v wise_o consider_v their_o latter_a end_n they_o may_v do_v this_o great_a business_n this_o one_o thing_n
year_n in_o a_o week_n in_o a_o day_n in_o a_o hour_n in_o a_o unthought_a of_o moment_n before_o a_o man_n have_v opportunity_n to_o consider_v to_o bethink_v himself_o or_o to_o repent_v and_o then_o the_o door_n of_o life_n and_o happiness_n be_v shut_v again_o there_o be_v a_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o consider_v this_o great_a proposal_n and_o choose_v the_o fear_n of_o almighty_n god_n and_o with_o it_o eternal_a life_n and_o be_v content_a to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o thing_n unlawful_a to_o obey_v almighty_a god_n to_o keep_v his_o favour_n to_o walk_v humble_o with_o he_o to_o accept_v of_o the_o tender_a of_o life_n and_o salvation_n upon_o the_o term_n propound_v by_o almighty_a god_n and_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o fear_n they_o enjoy_v his_o favour_n and_o presence_n and_o love_n and_o after_o this_o life_n spend_v whether_o it_o be_v long_a or_o short_a and_o whether_o their_o death_n be_v linger_a or_o sudden_a be_v sure_o the_o next_o moment_n after_o death_n to_o enjoy_v a_o immortal_a life_n of_o glory_n and_o happiness_n judge_v then_o which_o of_o these_o be_v the_o true_o wise_a man_n whether_o this_o be_v not_o a_o truth_n beyond_o dispute_n the_o fear_n of_o god_n that_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o to_o depart_v from_o evil_n be_v underâ—anaâ—â—_n of_o affliction_n the_o best_a preparation_n for_o they_o and_o improvement_n of_o they_o and_o of_o our_o delivery_n out_o of_o they_o job_n v._n 6_o 7._o although_o affliction_n come_v not_o forth_o of_o the_o dust_n neither_o do_v trouble_v spring_n out_o of_o the_o ground_n yet_o man_n be_v bear_v unto_o trouble_n as_o the_o spark_n fly_v upward_o job_n friend_n though_o in_o the_o particular_a case_n of_o job_n they_o be_v mistake_v yet_o they_o be_v certain_o very_o wise_a godly_a and_o observe_v man_n and_o many_o of_o their_o sentence_n be_v full_a of_o excellent_a and_o useful_a truth_n and_o particular_o this_o speech_n of_o eliphaz_n which_o import_v these_o two_o useful_a proposition_n 1._o that_o the_o general_a state_n of_o man_n in_o this_o world_n be_v a_o state_n of_o trouble_n and_o affiiction_n and_o it_o be_v so_o common_a to_o he_o so_o incident_a to_o all_o degree_n and_o condition_n of_o mankind_n that_o it_o seem_v almost_o as_o universal_a as_o that_o natural_a propension_n in_o the_o spark_n to_o fly_v upward_o no_o person_n of_o whatsoever_o age_n sex_n condition_n degree_n quality_n profession_n but_o have_v a_o part_n in_o this_o common_a state_n of_o mankind_n and_o although_o some_o seem_v to_o have_v a_o great_a portion_n of_o it_o than_o other_o some_o seem_v to_o have_v great_a and_o long_a vicissitude_n and_o intermission_n and_o allay_v thereof_o than_o other_o yet_o none_o be_v total_o exempt_a from_o it_o yea_o it_o be_v rare_a to_o find_v any_o man_n that_o have_v have_v the_o ordinary_a extent_n of_o the_o age_n of_o man_n but_o his_o trouble_n cross_n calamity_n affliction_n have_v overweigh_v and_o exceed_v the_o measure_n of_o his_o comfort_n and_o contentment_n in_o this_o life_n 2._o that_o yet_o those_o affliction_n and_o trouble_n do_v neither_o grow_v up_o by_o a_o certain_a regular_a and_o constant_a course_n of_o nature_n as_o plant_n and_o vegetable_n do_v out_o of_o the_o ground_n neither_o be_v they_o mere_o accidental_a and_o casual_a but_o they_o be_v send_v dispose_v direct_v and_o manage_v by_o the_o conduct_n and_o guidance_n of_o the_o most_o wise_a providence_n of_o almighty_n god_n and_o this_o he_o prove_v in_o the_o sequel_n of_o this_o chapter_n and_o as_o in_o all_o thing_n in_o nature_n the_o most_o wise_a god_n do_v nothing_o at_o random_n or_o at_o a_o venture_n so_o in_o this_o part_n of_o his_o providential_a dispensation_n towards_o mankind_n he_o do_v exercise_v the_o same_o with_o excellent_a wisdom_n and_o for_o excellent_a end_n even_o for_o the_o very_a good_a and_o advantage_n of_o mankind_n in_o general_n and_o particular_o of_o those_o very_a person_n that_o seem_v most_o to_o suffer_v and_o be_v afflict_v by_o they_o sometime_o to_o punish_v sometime_o to_o correct_v sometime_o to_o prevent_v sometime_o to_o heal_v sometime_o to_o prepare_v sometime_o to_o humble_a always_o to_o instruct_v and_o teach_v and_o better_a the_o child_n of_o man_n and_o indeed_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o end_n but_o these_o that_o follow_v this_o seem_a sharp_a providence_n of_o almighty_n god_n will_v be_v high_o justify_v namely_o first_o to_o keep_v man_n humble_a and_o disciplinable_a man_n be_v a_o proud_a vain_a creature_n and_o be_v that_o humour_n and_o little_a comfort_n of_o this_o life_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o trouble_n and_o cross_n with_o which_o they_o be_v interlard_v be_v apt_a to_o keep_v the_o heart_n even_o of_o good_a man_n in_o too_o great_a love_n of_o this_o world_n what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o if_o our_o whole_a life_n here_o shall_v be_v altogether_o prosperous_a and_o content_v without_o the_o intermixture_n of_o cross_n and_o affliction_n but_o of_o these_o thing_n more_o hereafter_o now_o since_o the_o state_n of_o mankind_n in_o this_o world_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n thus_o cloudy_a and_o to_o affliction_n of_o one_o kind_n or_o other_o at_o one_o time_n or_o another_o in_o one_o measure_n or_o another_o for_o man_n be_v certain_o bear_v to_o trouble_v as_o the_o spark_n sly_a upward_o for_o this_o can_v neither_o consist_v with_o the_o purity_n of_o his_o nature_n nor_o innocence_n nor_o dignity_n of_o his_o person_n nor_o the_o hypostatical_a union_n of_o both_o nature_n in_o he_o but_o he_o suffer_v as_o much_o as_o be_v consistent_a with_o these_o consideration_n and_o as_o consider_v the_o dignity_n of_o his_o person_n be_v equivalent_a to_o the_o sin_n and_o demerit_n of_o all_o mankind_n 2._o that_o his_o righteousness_n impute_v to_o we_o do_v not_o exempt_v we_o from_o acquire_v a_o righteousness_n inherent_a in_o we_o this_o be_v to_o disappoint_v the_o end_n of_o
