A64939 A review and examination of a book bearing the title of The history of the indulgence wherein the lawfulness of the acceptance of the peaceable exercise of the ministry granted by the Acts of the magistrates indulgence is demonstrated, contrary objections answered, and the vindication of such as withdraw from hearing indulged ministers is confuted : to which is added a survey of the mischievous absurdities of the late bond and Sanquhair declaration. authority_n and_o official_a power_n to_o be_v keeper_n of_o both_o table_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o defend_v the_o gospel_n and_o to_o command_v the_o preacher_n and_o synod_n to_o fulfil_v their_o charge_n and_o to_o see_v that_o the_o officer_n do_v their_o duty_n and_o to_o punish_v dumb_a dog_n idolater_n excommunicate_a person_n to_o drive_v away_o with_o the_o sword_n false_a teacher_n from_o the_o flock_n he_o have_v i_o say_v the_o same_o magistratical_a power_n while_o he_o be_v a_o heathen_a as_o when_o he_o be_v convert_v to_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o he_o be_v equal_o head_n of_o man_n when_o heathenish_a as_o when_o christian_n i_o shall_v add_v no_o more_o of_o this_o but_o that_o as_o the_o magistrate_n have_v retract_v the_o act_n of_o intercommune_v make_v against_o several_a of_o the_o subject_n so_o i_o wish_v that_o the_o author_n of_o this_o new_a act_n of_o intercommune_v against_o the_o magistrate_n may_v retract_v it_o also_o in_o the_o four_o page_n of_o the_o preface_n he_o say_v of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n that_o they_o be_v man_n in_o as_o ill_a case_n to_o have_v make_v or_o meddle_v in_o the_o concern_v of_o christ_n and_o his_o church_n with_o the_o man_n with_o who_o they_o have_v to_o do_v in_o their_o circumstance_n as_o ever_o any_o godly_a man_n in_o our_o church_n be_v answ_n i_o see_v this_o author_n have_v a_o way_n of_o judge_v the_o inward_a frames_n and_o case_n of_o other_o and_o even_o of_o those_o who_o live_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o he_o not_o only_o in_o regard_n of_o place_n but_o also_o of_o time_n by_o what_o evidence_n he_o know_v the_o ill_a case_n of_o these_o indulge_v minister_n at_o the_o time_n of_o the_o indulgence_n and_o by_o what_o evidence_n he_o know_v the_o case_n of_o all_o the_o godly_a man_n which_o have_v be_v in_o this_o church_n for_o this_o he_o must_v know_v or_o else_o he_o can_v not_o determine_v that_o the_o indulge_v be_v in_o as_o ill_a case_n as_o ever_o any_o godly_a man_n in_o this_o church_n be_v i_o can_v conjecture_v he_o shall_v either_o have_v hold_v his_o peace_n of_o their_o ill_a case_n or_o else_o he_o shall_v have_v instance_a it_o for_o as_o he_o have_v leave_v it_o in_o this_o uncharitable_a time_n some_o people_n may_v suspect_v much_o worse_a than_o any_o thing_n he_o have_v to_o say_v it_o may_v be_v his_o information_n and_o reason_n may_v be_v false_a or_o not_o concludent_fw-la and_o it_o may_v be_v his_o reason_n if_o he_o have_v any_o conclude_v only_o against_o some_o of_o the_o indulge_v whereas_o he_o have_v now_o leave_v it_o upon_o they_o all_o that_o they_o be_v in_o as_o ill_a case_n as_o ever_o any_o godly_a man_n in_o this_o church_n be_v but_o suppose_v they_o be_v in_o a_o ill_a case_n will_v that_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v unlawful_a for_o they_o to_o go_v and_o preach_v in_o these_o parish_n which_o be_v either_o their_o own_o or_o else_o be_v destitute_a invite_v they_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n may_v be_v through_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n a_o excellent_a mean_n to_o better_v their_o case_n i_o have_v hear_v it_o of_o some_o who_o can_v well_o judge_v that_o he_o have_v hear_v some_o of_o these_o minister_n before_o affirm_v that_o they_o preach_v much_o better_a since_o their_o return_n than_o they_o do_v before_o they_o be_v put_v out_o if_o he_o know_v his_o brethren_n to_o be_v in_o a_o ill_a case_n he_o shall_v have_v tell_v they_o of_o it_o and_o have_v hear_v they_o what_o they_o have_v to_o say_v and_o then_o have_v consider_v whether_o it_o be_v fit_a to_o have_v print_v their_o case_n and_o publish_v it_o to_o the_o world_n whatever_o truth_n may_v appear_v in_o his_o dilate_v this_o further_o there_o be_v no_o great_a appearance_n of_o parallel_n of_o their_o case_n and_o the_o case_n of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n or_o else_o he_o must_v know_v that_o the_o case_n of_o these_o indulge_v minister_n be_v so_o ill_o that_o no_o godly_a man_n can_v be_v in_o a_o worse_a case_n and_o how_o he_o can_v certain_o know_v the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o except_o he_o have_v it_o by_o revelation_n which_o i_o think_v he_o will_v not_o pretend_v unto_o i_o can_v imagine_v i_o think_v it_o will_v not_o be_v rashness_n to_o say_v that_o his_o confidence_n in_o this_o matter_n have_v go_v further_a than_o his_o evidence_n can_v carry_v it_o for_o as_o fearless_a and_o untender_a as_o he_o think_v these_o indulge_v minister_n i_o suppose_v they_o will_v have_v be_v afraid_a to_o have_v intrude_v so_o far_o in_o the_o comparative_a judge_v of_o the_o illness_n of_o the_o case_n of_o any_o one_o godly_a minister_n let_v be_v of_o so_o many_o in_o this_o next_o section_n he_o charge_v the_o indulge_v minister_n with_o this_o new_a step_n of_o defection_n and_o say_v that_o it_o have_v have_v most_o deplorable_a effect_n and_o that_o it_o be_v like_a to_o be_v more_o fatal_a to_o the_o poor_a languish_a remnant_n than_o any_o step_n of_o defection_n to_o which_o ever_o any_o godly_a man_n be_v leave_v in_o the_o church_n of_o scotland_n if_o it_o be_v find_v that_o the_o indulge_v minister_n have_v not_o make_v defection_n in_o their_o go_v to_o exercise_v their_o ministry_n in_o the_o place_n to_o which_o they_o be_v indulge_v nor_o in_o their_o act_n that_o be_v previous_a to_o their_o go_v to_o these_o congregation_n his_o charge_n will_v be_v find_v false_a and_o he_o must_v find_v out_o some_o other_o cause_n of_o these_o deplorable_a effect_n of_o which_o he_o speak_v than_o the_o practice_n of_o these_o indulge_v minister_n there_o be_v many_o good_a effect_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n in_o these_o congregation_n several_a have_v be_v convert_v many_o edify_v and_o build_v up_o in_o their_o most_o holy_a faith_n the_o rent_v and_o ruin_n of_o the_o church_n which_o he_o speak_v of_o afterward_o will_v be_v find_v to_o have_v proceed_v from_o other_o cause_n which_o i_o love_v not_o to_o name_v and_o not_o from_o the_o ministry_n of_o these_o minister_n in_o these_o place_n or_o from_o their_o practice_n which_o go_v before_o their_o preach_v in_o these_o congregation_n the_o first_o degree_n of_o their_o defection_n as_o we_o hear_v before_o be_v this_o that_o they_o make_v or_o meddle_v with_o the_o ruler_n at_o all_o he_o be_v against_o all_o address_n to_o they_o and_o therefore_o according_a to_o his_o opinion_n when_o the_o magistrate_n call_v for_o these_o minister_n who_o they_o intend_v to_o indulge_v they_o shall_v have_v send_v they_o word_n we_o will_v neither_o make_v nor_o meddle_v with_o you_o nor_o can_v we_o make_v any_o address_n to_o you_o except_o it_o be_v to_o tell_v you_o we_o can_v make_v none_o now_o
something_o if_o it_o have_v be_v but_o to_o have_v restrain_v the_o volatile_a thing_n of_o which_o he_o be_v immediate_o speak_v that_o they_o may_v not_o get_v away_o for_o if_o you_o hold_v not_o these_o subtle_a bird_n by_o the_o head_n it_o be_v folly_n to_o think_v of_o lay_v salt_n on_o their_o tail_n if_o they_o once_o slip_v the_o bridle_n and_o to_o follow_v they_o when_o they_o be_v fly_v be_v the_o wild_a of_o all_o wild-goose_n chase_n for_o if_o they_o once_o get_v out_o of_o your_o hand_n you_o will_v never_o more_o get_v your_o eye_n upon_o they_o again_o let_v be_v your_o hand_n for_o they_o evanish_v and_o turn_v to_o that_o which_o be_v next_o to_o nothing_o and_o whether_o they_o be_v good_a for_o any_o thing_n or_o nothing_o after_o they_o be_v go_v i_o leave_v the_o chemist_n to_o inquire_v who_o be_v take_v up_o with_o these_o whitty_n whatty_n as_o the_o historian_n term_v they_o but_o enough_o if_o not_o too_o much_o of_o this_o the_o historian_n unworthy_a abuse_v of_o so_o worthy_a and_o deserve_a a_o person_n and_o his_o treat_v of_o so_o grave_a a_o person_n in_o so_o ridiculous_a a_o way_n do_v not_o deserve_v any_o serious_a answer_n if_o that_o reverend_a and_o learned_a minister_n have_v speak_v his_o mind_n in_o subtle_a evanish_v word_n have_v no_o sensible_a sense_n or_o a_o sense_n not_o easy_o perceptible_a or_o if_o he_o have_v use_v term_n of_o art_n or_o word_n borrow_v from_o physic_n or_o chemistry_n or_o speak_v latin_a before_o the_o council_n there_o may_v have_v be_v some_o pretext_n for_o this_o ridiculous_a drollery_n but_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o all_o these_o in_o his_o speech_n the_o first_o part_n of_o his_o speech_n be_v the_o same_o upon_o the_o matter_n with_o mr._n b_n and_o large_a as_o plain_a if_o not_o more_o plain_a than_o his_o speech_n and_o it_o have_v this_o advantage_n that_o it_o be_v more_o comprehensive_a for_o mr._n b_n speech_n do_v only_o exclude_v the_o magistrate_n from_o make_v rule_n to_o regulate_v minister_n in_o their_o ministerial_a act_n this_o speech_n exclude_v the_o magistrate_n from_o make_v all_o ecclesiastical_a canon_n now_o there_o be_v many_o ecclesiastical_a canon_n beside_o these_o which_o regulate_v the_o exercise_n of_o the_o ministry_n as_o for_o example_n if_o the_o magistrate_n will_v make_v a_o act_n that_o no_o person_n shall_v bring_v a_o child_n to_o be_v baptise_a by_o a_o presbyterian_a minister_n or_o out_v minister_n this_o will_v be_v a_o ecclesiastical_a canon_n lay_v a_o undue_a restraint_n upon_o minister_n who_o have_v child_n to_o be_v baptise_a not_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n but_o in_o that_o which_o be_v common_a to_o they_o with_o other_o christian_n who_o have_v child_n to_o be_v present_v to_o baptism_n this_o speech_n exclude_v this_o and_o in_o general_a all_o ecclesiastic_a canon_n the_o historian_n allege_v that_o it_o be_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n sure_o he_o will_v not_o have_v say_v so_o of_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o speech_n if_o the_o second_o part_n have_v not_o be_v add_v now_o the_o addition_n of_o the_o second_o part_n be_v very_o much_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o remove_v the_o mistake_n which_o the_o magistrate_n have_v conceive_v from_o mr._n b_n speech_n and_o the_o word_n be_v in_o my_o opinion_n more_o apposite_a than_o if_o he_o have_v say_v civil_a law_n or_o statute_n for_o the_o instruction_n which_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o in_o this_o part_n of_o his_o speech_n be_v neither_o proper_o law_n nor_o statute_n such_o as_o the_o confinement_n and_o it_o may_v be_v the_o act_n for_o pay_v the_o clerk_n fe_n it_o be_v hard_a to_o find_v a_o more_o apposite_a and_o more_o short_a designation_n of_o act_n of_o that_o nature_n than_o that_o which_o he_o use_v to_o wit_n civil_a signification_n of_o the_o magistrate_n pleasure_n under_o the_o hazard_n of_o civil_a penalty_n and_o if_o i_o know_v not_o the_o historian_n prejudice_n against_o indulge_v minister_n i_o can_v not_o but_o wonder_v that_o he_o make_v such_o tragical_a out-cry_n against_o so_o plain_a and_o apposite_a word_n the_o brother_n who_o have_v answer_v this_o history_n in_o his_o answer_n to_o this_o part_n of_o it_o show_n that_o it_o be_v uncontroverted_a among_o these_o brethren_n that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o these_o instruction_n be_v ecclesiastic_a canon_n he_o show_v also_o that_o the_o paper_n offer_v to_o they_o by_o the_o council_n contain_v injunction_n one_o at_o least_o of_o a_o civil_a nature_n the_o first_o sort_n be_v refuse_v the_o last_o he_o do_v not_o either_o direct_o refuse_v or_o accept_v resolve_v to_o do_v as_o he_o shall_v all_o thing_n consider_v find_v best_a what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_a or_o ingenuous_a yet_o say_v the_o historian_n 1._o by_o this_o distinction_n little_o better_a than_o a_o mental_a reservation_n they_o may_v have_v scruple_v at_o nothing_o that_o the_o magistrate_n may_v attempt_v to_o prescribe_v in_o church-matter_n no_o not_o at_o his_o give_a rule_n intrinsical_o and_o formal_o ecclesiastical_a for_o these_o may_v also_o pass_v as_o civil_a signification_n of_o their_o pleasure_n etc._n etc._n answ_n his_o parenthesis_n about_o mental_a reservation_n which_o be_v a_o jesuitical_a cheat_n and_o trick_n confirm_v the_o suspicion_n that_o his_o latin_a sentence_n be_v a_o periphrasis_n of_o cheatry_n the_o historian_n can_v hardly_o have_v do_v the_o author_n a_o great_a injury_n than_o to_o have_v charge_v he_o with_o one_o of_o the_o worst_a of_o the_o jesuit_n lie_v trick_n but_o his_o ingenuity_n be_v so_o well_o know_v to_o all_o who_o know_v he_o that_o the_o historian_n tongue_n and_o pen_n will_v not_o make_v this_o slander_n stick_v to_o he_o the_o historian_n may_v rather_o have_v allege_v that_o it_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o oratory_n a_o aposiopesis_fw-la for_o the_o person_n of_o who_o he_o speak_v be_v a_o good_a orator_n and_o they_o say_v supprimit_fw-la orator_n quod_fw-la rusticus_n edit_v inepte_v but_o to_o make_v it_o little_o better_a than_o a_o mental_a reservation_n which_o even_o some_o popish_a writer_n as_o scotus_n and_o covarruvias_n condemn_v as_o a_o lie_n be_v a_o very_a injurious_a slander_n they_o who_o make_v use_v of_o these_o mental_a reservation_n speak_v that_o which_o be_v false_a and_o which_o they_o know_v to_o be_v false_a and_o think_v they_o shun_v lie_v by_o add_v in_o their_o mind_n somewhat_o to_o what_o they_o speak_v to_o make_v it_o a_o truth_n as_o when_o they_o be_v interrogate_v by_o a_o judge_n even_o upon_o oath_n if_o they_o speak_v or_o do_v this_o or_o that_o they_o will_v swear_v that_o they_o neither_o do_v nor_o speak_v it_o the_o judge_n hear_v no_o more_o from_o they_o but_o then_o they_o think_v they_o have_v not_o lie_v nor_o perjure_v themselves_o because_o they_o have_v this_o thought_n in_o their_o mind_n i_o do_v not_o say_v or_o do_v this_o or_o that_o to_o tell_v it_o to_o you_o who_o question_v i_o so_o that_o what_o they_o speak_v be_v manifest_o a_o lie_n but_o what_o that_o brother_n speak_v be_v truth_n and_o i_o believe_v he_o speak_v the_o last_o word_n in_o great_a simplicity_n and_o singleness_n as_o not_o know_v what_o he_o will_v do_v when_o put_v to_o it_o by_o such_o civil_a signification_n of_o the_o magistrate_n pleasure_n and_o so_o can_v not_o give_v any_o determinate_a answer_n what_o he_o will_v do_v he_o speak_v like_o a_o wise_a and_o conscientious_a man_n with_o great_a ingenuity_n what_o will_v the_o historian_n have_v he_o say_v shall_v he_o have_v say_v i_o will_v obey_v no_o civil_a act_n by_o which_o you_o signify_v your_o pleasure_n whatever_o be_v the_o hazard_n or_o penalty_n or_o will_v he_o have_v have_v he_o say_v i_o will_v obey_v all_o the_o civil_a act_n whereby_o you_o signify_v your_o pleasure_n both_o these_o have_v be_v rash_a and_o unwarrantable_a answer_n which_o no_o conscientious_a man_n who_o understand_v what_o he_o say_v can_v give_v to_o any_o magistrate_n who_o have_v civil_a authority_n over_o he_o and_o i_o suppose_v if_o the_o historian_n have_v be_v in_o his_o case_n and_o have_v absolute_o refuse_v to_o keep_v the_o confinement_n or_o pay_v the_o clerk_n fee_n if_o the_o magistrate_n have_v certify_v he_o that_o if_o he_o keep_v not_o his_o confinement_n he_o will_v lay_v he_o by_o the_o heel_n in_o a_o prison_n and_o see_v the_o magistrate_n do_v allow_v he_o the_o stipend_n and_o yet_o he_o will_v not_o pay_v a_o little_a money_n at_o their_o command_n that_o they_o will_v authorize_v the_o clerk_n to_o take_v he_o with_o caption_n i_o suppose_v in_o this_o case_n the_o historian_n will_v have_v be_v in_o some_o swither_v what_o to_o say_v or_o do_v and_o will_v have_v take_v some_o time_n to_o advise_v and_o it_o be_v very_o strange_a
prescription_n and_o that_o they_o can_v receive_v no_o other_o prescription_n beside_o christ_n prescription_n to_o regulate_v they_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n 4._o they_o
