their_o hand_n and_o paul_n that_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o convert_v so_o many_o thousand_o he_o ascribe_v nothing_o to_o himself_o but_o it_o be_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o be_v with_o he_o so_o samson_n be_v strong_a but_o yet_o he_o have_v his_o strength_n from_o god_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v write_v by_o holy_a man_n inspire_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n see_v we_o have_v such_o just_a ground_n to_o believe_v use_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o make_v heaven_n and_o earth_n principle_n and_o that_o this_o word_n which_o testify_v of_o he_o be_v indeed_o the_o word_n of_o god._n this_o use_n we_o be_v to_o make_v of_o it_o that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o we_o it_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o confirm_v this_o first_o principle_n and_o make_v it_o sure_a see_v all_o the_o rest_n be_v build_v upon_o it_o therefore_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o weigh_v it_o that_o we_o may_v give_v full_a consent_n to_o it_o and_o not_o a_o weak_a one_o object_n but_o you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v a_o principle_n that_o need_v not_o to_o be_v thus_o urge_v or_o make_v question_n of_o therefore_o what_o need_v so_o many_o reason_n to_o prove_v it_o answ._n even_o the_o strong_a among_o we_o have_v still_o need_v to_o increase_v our_o faith_n in_o this_o point_n and_o therefore_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o attend_v to_o it_o and_o that_o for_o these_o two_o reason_n reason_n because_o these_o principle_n though_o they_o be_v so_o common_a 1._o yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n in_o the_o belief_n of_o the_o saint_n principle_n and_o that_o with_o which_o common_a man_n believe_v they_o the_o difference_n be_v in_o these_o four_o thing_n both_o of_o they_o do_v believe_v and_o they_o speak_v as_o they_o think_v yet_o you_o shall_v find_v this_o difference_n a_o regenerate_a man_n have_v a_o further_a and_o a_o deep_a insight_n into_o these_o truth_n he_o give_v a_o more_o through_o and_o a_o strong_a assent_n to_o they_o 1._o but_o another_o man_n give_v a_o more_o slight_a and_o overly_o assent_n that_o faith_n with_o which_o they_o believe_v they_o be_v a_o faith_n that_o want_v depth_n of_o earth_n therefore_o if_o any_o strong_a temptation_n come_v upon_o they_o as_o fear_v of_o be_v put_v to_o death_n etc._n etc._n they_o be_v soon_o shake_v off_o and_o do_v often_o fall_v away_o when_o they_o be_v put_v to_o it_o they_o shrink_v away_o in_o time_n of_o persecution_n for_o their_o faith_n want_v depth_n of_o earth_n that_o be_v the_o assent_n they_o give_v to_o the_o scripture_n be_v but_o a_o overly_o and_o superficial_a assent_n it_o do_v not_o take_v deep_a root_n in_o their_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o wither_v in_o time_n of_o temptation_n they_o do_v not_o so_o ponder_v they_o as_o other_o do_v and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o so_o ground_v in_o these_o first_o principle_n as_o other_o be_v though_o they_o have_v some_o hold_n 〈◊〉_d yet_o not_o so_o great_a a_o hold_n as_o the_o godly_a have_v so_o as_o they_o be_v not_o so_o firm_o establish_v so_o ground_v in_o the_o present_a truth_n they_o be_v not_o so_o root_v as_o the_o saint_n be_v 2._o that_o which_o breed_v this_o assent_n in_o they_o be_v but_o a_o common_a gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o that_o with_o which_o the_o saint_n believe_v they_o be_v a_o special_a grace_n infuse_v wrought_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n now_o that_o which_o have_v a_o weak_a cause_n must_v needs_o have_v a_o weak_a effect_n that_o which_o be_v wrought_v by_o a_o common_a can_v be_v so_o strong_a a_o assent_n as_o that_o which_o be_v wrought_v by_o a_o infuse_a habit_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n therefore_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o saint_n be_v strong_a than_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o saint_n the_o regenerate_a man_n 3_o build_v their_o hope_n comfort_n and_o happiness_n upon_o the_o truth_n of_o these_o principle_n as_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o rule_v heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v his_o word_n and_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o they_o be_v truth_n they_o build_v all_o upon_o these_o therefore_o if_o any_o doubt_n arise_v they_o can_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o faith_n have_v resolve_v they_o and_o wrought_v they_o out_o with_o another_o man_n it_o be_v not_o so_o he_o take_v these_o thing_n upon_o trust_n and_o believe_v they_o as_o other_o do_v but_o he_o do_v not_o much_o trouble_v himself_o about_o they_o and_o therefore_o if_o any_o doubt_n come_v against_o they_o he_o suffer_v they_o to_o lie_v there_o and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o careless_a manner_n but_o with_o the_o saint_n it_o be_v not_o so_o they_o build_v their_o hope_n upon_o they_o do_v therefore_o resolve_v to_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o god_n they_o will_v be_v content_a to_o lose_v all_o for_o he_o if_o occasion_n require_v and_o therefore_o they_o be_v upon_o sure_a ground_n but_o the_o other_o they_o do_v but_o receive_v upon_o trust_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v not_o cleave_v to_o he_o in_o that_o manner_n that_o the_o saint_n do_v regenerate_v man_n have_v a_o lively_a and_o experimental_a knowledge_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n 4._o and_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v his_o word_n from_o the_o communion_n that_o they_o have_v have_v with_o this_o god_n and_o from_o the_o experience_n they_o have_v have_v of_o the_o truth_n deliver_v in_o the_o scripture_n they_o know_v very_o well_o and_o that_o experimental_o what_o difference_n there_o be_v between_o what_o they_o be_v once_o and_o what_o they_o be_v now_o what_o it_o be_v to_o envy_v the_o saint_n and_o what_o it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o affection_n of_o love_n to_o they_o they_o know_v the_o time_n when_o they_o slight_v sin_n when_o they_o make_v no_o reckon_n of_o it_o they_o know_v again_o the_o bitterness_n and_o sorrow_n of_o sin_n when_o the_o commandment_n come_v and_o show_v it_o unto_o they_o in_o its_o colour_n they_o know_v a_o time_n when_o they_o judge_v perverse_o of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n when_o they_o have_v a_o bad_a opinion_n of_o they_o and_o how_o now_o they_o be_v change_v beside_o they_o know_v how_o that_o once_o they_o do_v admire_v and_o magnify_v worldly_a excellency_n and_o preferment_n but_o since_o they_o be_v enlighten_v their_o opinion_n be_v otherwise_o i_o say_v they_o know_v all_o this_o experimental_o take_v the_o whole_a work_n of_o regeneration_n they_o know_v it_o in_o themselves_o and_o so_o for_o god_n himself_o as_o he_o be_v describe_v in_o the_o scripture_n such_o have_v they_o find_v he_o to_o themselves_o now_o where_o a_o man_n do_v know_v thing_n thus_o experimental_o it_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n than_o that_o which_o be_v by_o hearsay_n so_o that_o though_o there_o be_v a_o belief_n in_o they_o both_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o they_o 2._o we_o must_v labour_v to_o confirm_v our_o faith_n in_o these_o principle_n because_o they_o be_v of_o exceed_v great_a moment_n and_o consequence_n in_o the_o life_n of_o man_n life_n though_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v remote_a yet_o they_o be_v of_o more_o moment_n than_o any_o other_o as_o of_o a_o house_n you_o see_v a_o fair_a top_n but_o yet_o the_o foundation_n be_v of_o more_o moment_n and_o that_o can_v be_v see_v the_o stream_n be_v see_v but_o the_o wellhead_n can_v so_o all_o the_o action_n of_o the_o life_n of_o man_n be_v build_v upon_o these_o principle_n and_o as_o they_o be_v more_o strong_o or_o weak_o believe_v so_o have_v they_o more_o or_o less_o influence_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o life_n of_o man_n as_o take_v a_o man_n that_o believe_v full_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v his_o word_n this_o breed_v a_o unresistable_a resolution_n to_o serve_v and_o please_v he_o notwithstanding_o all_o opposition_n he_o meet_v with_o take_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o use_v to_o daunt_v man_n as_o take_v a_o man_n well_o provide_v for_o himself_o but_o then_o he_o be_v hardly_o entertain_v put_v into_o prison_n and_o send_v bind_v to_o caesarea_n and_o afterward_o be_v in_o many_o peril_n upon_o the_o sea_n and_o this_o be_v the_o prosperous_a journey_n that_o paul_n have_v and_o sure_o it_o be_v happy_a and_o do_v much_o good_a to_o his_o own_o soul_n whereby_o he_o do_v good_a to_o other_o a_o journey_n that_o lead_v he_o into_o many_o experiment_n of_o god_n providence_n and_o goodness_n towards_o he_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v according_a to_o the_o outside_n or_o that_o which_o the_o world_n account_v of_o and_o appear_v to_o be_v evil_a for_o they_o may_v be_v cause_n of_o much_o good_a to_o we_o therefore_o saint_n james_n will_v we_o james_n 1.2_o 3._o to_o blessing_n to_o another_o and_o be_v carry_v with_o a_o prosperous_a wind_n and_o find_v no_o change_n in_o any_o thing_n this_o may_v also_o tend_v to_o his_o hurt_n and_o destruction_n as_o the_o other_o to_o his_o salvation_n these_o slay_v the_o foolish_a even_o as_o the_o other_o save_o the_o godly_a for_o these_o oftentime_o do_v make_v the_o soul_n foul_a and_o foul_a and_o make_v it_o to_o be_v more_o rusty_a this_o want_n of_o change_n make_v man_n to_o depart_v from_o god_n and_o fall_v into_o evil_n whereas_o the_o other_o make_v we_o the_o more_o careful_o to_o cleanse_v our_o holy_a life_n which_o they_o lead_v object_n but_o if_o you_o will_v say_v that_o indeed_o for_o the_o declare_v of_o thing_n and_o for_o the_o confirmr_n of_o truth_n there_o be_v more_o evidence_n immortality_n of_o the_o soul_n answ._n if_o this_o be_v so_o you_o see_v that_o man_n have_v rise_v from_o the_o dead_a as_o when_o christ_n do_v arise_v than_o many_o arise_v from_o the_o dead_a the_o three_o sermon_n hebrew_n 11.6_o he_o that_o come_v to_o god_n must_v believe_v that_o god_n be_v etc._n etc._n now_o we_o proceed_v to_o that_o which_o remain_v argument_n we_o will_v show_v this_o second_o proof_n differ_v from_o the_o former_a answ._n 1_o i_o answer_v after_o this_o manner_n there_o be_v a_o double_a assent_n one_o be_v a_o doubtful_a assent_n which_o we_o call_v opinion_n that_o be_v when_o we_o assent_v to_o the_o one_o part_n so_o as_o we_o fear_v the_o contrary_a to_o be_v true_a the_o other_o be_v a_o firm_a assent_n and_o this_o be_v twofold_a either_o it_o be_v ground_v upon_o reason_n which_o we_o call_v knowledge_n or_o else_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o authority_n of_o he_o that_o reveal_v it_o and_o this_o we_o call_v faith_n and_o the_o difference_n of_o they_o stand_v in_o this_o the_o object_n of_o the_o first_o which_o we_o call_v knowledge_n be_v natural_a thing_n such_o as_o god_n do_v not_o reveal_v himself_o but_o they_o lie_v before_o we_o and_o reason_n can_v find_v they_o out_o but_o faith_n believe_v thing_n that_o be_v reveal_v by_o god_n yet_o so_o as_o that_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n for_o they_o as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o other_o for_o if_o one_o come_v and_o tell_v you_o any_o thing_n and_o if_o you_o believe_v it_o you_o can_v give_v a_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o why_o you_o believe_v it_o aswell_o as_o of_o any_o other_o natural_a conclusion_n as_o that_o he_o be_v a_o wise_a man_n and_o one_o that_o i_o know_v will_v tell_v the_o truth_n
no_o deputy_n for_o the_o use_n of_o deputy_n argue_v a_o defect_n as_o the_o use_n of_o spectacle_n or_o crutch_n do_v if_o the_o eye_n or_o leg_n be_v well_o and_o sound_a enough_o a_o man_n will_v not_o use_v they_o so_o a_o man_n will_v not_o write_v letter_n or_o use_v other_o mean_n to_o do_v his_o business_n but_o from_o a_o defect_n he_o be_v not_o large_a enough_o to_o do_v his_o business_n immediate_o but_o almighty_a god_n he_o be_v every_o where_o present_a and_o in_o his_o govern_v all_o thing_n be_v do_v by_o his_o own_o almighty_a power_n good_a governor_n may_v have_v allege_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n have_v much_o falsehood_n mix_v with_o they_o which_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o he_o never_o read_v they_o himself_o but_o that_o he_o have_v they_o by_o relation_n but_o only_o he_o speak_v to_o a_o very_a ignorant_a people_n they_o receive_v it_o of_o he_o and_o have_v enlarge_v themselves_o by_o the_o sword_n and_o so_o they_o continue_v to_o this_o day_n the_o impurity_n of_o his_o doctrine_n he_o cut_v off_o what_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v believe_v life_n and_o whatsoever_o be_v difficult_a to_o practice_v and_o he_o propound_v that_o to_o the_o people_n wherein_o there_o be_v no_o hardness_n no_o difficulty_n promise_v they_o a_o paradise_n wherein_o they_o shall_v have_v all_o pleasure_n and_o shall_v enjoy_v woman_n and_o also_o they_o thorough_a performance_n for_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o old_a law_n a_o lame_a sacrifice_n be_v accept_v as_o none_o so_o a_o lame_a prayer_n a_o lame_a hear_v the_o word_n a_o lame_a performance_n of_o any_o exercise_n god_n reckon_v as_o none_o therefore_o in_o these_o thing_n god_n send_v they_o away_o empty_a as_o they_o come_v what_o better_a be_v they_o do_v their_o heart_n get_v any_o thing_n belove_a god_n be_v a_o fountain_n and_o if_o he_o meet_v with_o a_o fit_a pipe_n as_o be_v a_o ordinance_n right_o perform_v there_o he_o usual_o convey_v his_o grace_n but_o if_o he_o meet_v with_o a_o foul_a pipe_n and_o obstruct_v there_o he_o do_v not_o confer_v any_o blessing_n now_o if_o thou_o say_v i_o have_v thus_o behave_v myself_o and_o have_v not_o be_v answer_v do_v not_o man_n who_o we_o be_v to_o advertise_v in_o this_o case_n take_v heed_n though_o you_o pray_v every_o day_n yet_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o have_v not_o make_v a_o prayer_n all_o thy_o life_n yet_o and_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o many_o for_o if_o thou_o consider_v what_o a_o ordinance_n be_v indeed_o thou_o shall_v know_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o reckon_v all_o petition_v as_o a_o prayer_n nor_o set_v it_o down_o for_o the_o ordinance_n and_o it_o may_v be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o saint_n sometime_o though_o we_o speak_v not_o now_o to_o they_o they_o may_v pray_v often_o and_o yet_o the_o lord_n not_o register_n nor_o set_v it_o down_o for_o a_o prayer_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v never_o come_v into_o remembrance_n before_o he_o and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v david_n case_n in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o adultery_n the_o ground_n of_o which_o you_o shall_v see_v psal._n 51.16_o 17._o 17_o open_v thou_o my_o lip_n o_o lord_n and_o my_o mouth_n shall_v set_v forth_o thy_o a_o conceit_n that_o it_o may_v perform_v it_o the_o better_a than_o there_o be_v a_o liberty_n leave_v unto_o you_o to_o dispense_v with_o it_o as_o i_o say_v for_o prayer_n so_o for_o other_o duty_n when_o a_o man_n come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n he_o say_v my_o mind_n be_v intent_n enough_o though_o i_o make_v not_o such_o a_o show_n yet_o notwithstanding_o know_v this_o that_o thou_o must_v behave_v thyself_o reverent_o when_o thou_o come_v before_o god_n you_o shall_v see_v in_o luke_n 4._o when_o christ_n preach_v 4._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o the_o people_n be_v think_v they_o may_v worship_v the_o humanity_n of_o christ_n disjoin_v be_v deceive_v we_o be_v not_o to_o worship_v it_o as_o separate_v from_o his_o deity_n for_o we_o be_v to_o worship_v the_o trinity_n in_o the_o unity_n and_o the_o unity_n in_o trinity_n which_o we_o can_v do_v if_o we_o worship_v his_o humanity_n as_o separate_v from_o his_o deity_n therefore_o when_o you_o come_v to_o pray_v before_o god_n you_o must_v remember_v 34.6_o that_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n fill_v heaven_n and_o earth_n strong_a gracious_a merciful_a full_a of_o goodness_n and_o truth_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o soul_n of_o another_o man_n when_o thou_o speak_v to_o he_o thou_o never_o do_v see_v it_o yet_o thou_o know_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o spirit_n that_o fill_v the_o body_n and_o that_o do_v understand_v what_o thou_o say_v and_o speak_v to_o thou_o again_o so_o remember_v this_o of_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n compare_v jer._n 23.24_o with_o this_o 23.24_o can_v any_o man_n hide_v himself_o in_o secret_a place_n that_o i_o shall_v not_o see_v he_o say_v the_o lord_n do_v not_o i_o fill_v heaven_n and_o earth_n say_v the_o lord_n second_o that_o the_o lord_n fill_v heaven_n and_o earth_n as_o the_o soul_n fill_v the_o body_n so_o that_o thou_o must_v think_v that_o he_o see_v all_o thing_n and_o hear_v all_o thing_n indeed_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o body_n but_o in_o a_o incomprehensible_a manner_n which_o we_o can_v express_v to_o you_o yet_o this_o be_v a_o expression_n which_o we_o may_v help_v ourselves_o by_o and_o be_v use_v every_o where_o
