with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a herein_o we_o propose_v to_o be_v consider_v first_o what_o this_o advocateship_n of_o christ_n be_v and_o how_o christ_n do_v manage_v this_o office_n of_o advocateship_n second_o who_o cause_n it_o be_v that_o christ_n do_v here_o plead_v three_o how_o christ_n be_v gift_v and_o qualify_v for_o this_o office_n of_o advocateship_n last_o what_o the_o issue_n of_o this_o advocateship_n of_o christ_n be_v propose_v in_o the_o last_o word_n of_o the_o text_n he_o be_v the_o propitiation_n for_o our_o sin_n concern_v the_o first_o what_o this_o office_n of_o advocateship_n be_v the_o sum_n be_v brief_o this_o the_o office_n of_o a_o advocate_n be_v to_o plead_v out_o the_o cause_n of_o a_o man_n as_o it_o be_v in_o justice_n and_o right_n so_o that_o the_o advocateship_n of_o christ_n consist_v in_o plead_v forth_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o people_n even_o from_o the_o principle_n of_o right_n and_o justice_n whereas_o it_o be_v object_v and_o indeed_o seem_v a_o thing_n unreconcilable_a namely_o that_o
be_v jesus_n christ_n the_o righteous_a we_o have_v therefore_o propose_v to_o be_v consider_v first_o how_o clear_a the_o scripture_n be_v in_o this_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v his_o righteousness_n that_o carry_v the_o cause_n of_o a_o poor_a believer_n when_o he_o have_v sin_v and_o get_v the_o discharge_n for_o his_o sin_n after_o it_o be_v commit_v i_o say_v the_o plea_n lie_v in_o his_o righteousness_n i_o can_v insist_v upon_o the_o scripture_n mention_v they_o be_v very_o plentiful_a we_o come_v further_o to_o consider_v what_o this_o righteousness_n of_o he_o be_v that_o have_v such_o a_o strength_n of_o plea_n in_o it_o the_o resolution_n of_o this_o i_o distribute_v into_o two_o head_n first_o negative_a second_o affirmative_a first_o the_o righteousness_n which_o carry_v away_o the_o cause_n and_o obtain_v the_o discharge_n of_o a_o believer_n sin_n be_v no_o righteousness_n of_o our_o own_o no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v our_o act_n of_o believe_v here_o we_o leave_v the_o last_o day_n i_o will_v give_v you_o a_o touch_n of_o the_o impossibility_n that_o faith_n shall_v so_o plead_v for_o the_o discharge_n from_o sin_n in_o its_o own_o name_n or_o strength_n as_o to_o carry_v away_o the_o cause_n on_o the_o side_n of_o this_o person_n sin_v it_o be_v true_a the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o 10._o to_o the_o roman_n about_o the_o 4._o verse_n a_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n there_o be_v indeed_o but_o that_o righteousness_n which_o be_v here_o give_v and_o ascribe_v unto_o faith_n be_v afterward_o appropriate_v to_o the_o word_n that_o be_v unto_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n speak_v on_o this_o wise_a say_v not_o in_o thy_o heart_n who_o shall_v ascend_v up_o into_o heaven_n that_o be_v to_o bring_v christ_n from_o thence_o or_o who_o shall_v descend_v into_o the_o deep_a but_o what_o say_v it_o the_o word_n be_v nigh_o thou_o in_o thy_o heart_n &_o in_o thy_o mouth_n that_o be_v in_o the_o word_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o in_o the_o mouth_n that_o be_v the_o word_n of_o faith_n and_o so_o not_o the_o righteousness_n of_o a_o man_n own_o act_n of_o believe_v i_o can_v dwell_v upon_o what_o i_o have_v deliver_v before_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n brief_o to_o be_v consider_v even_o about_o our_o believe_v as_o it_o have_v a_o stroke_n in_o the_o discharge_n from_o sin_n or_o in_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n the_o truth_n be_v belove_v some_o hand_n faith_n have_v in_o this_o business_n but_o it_o be_v not_o any_o righteousness_n in_o the_o act_n of_o believe_v that_o carry_v any_o stroke_n in_o it_o if_o you_o will_v consider_v it_o well_o you_o shall_v easy_o see_v there_o be_v no_o more_o righteousness_n in_o our_o believe_v as_o we_o do_v act_n believe_v than_o there_o be_v in_o any_o other_o gracious_a act_n whatsoever_o we_o do_v there_o be_v no_o more_o righteousness_n in_o the_o act_n of_o our_o beleve_v then_o be_v in_o our_o love_n of_o god_n nay_o more_o there_o be_v as_o much_o sinfulness_n in_o our_o act_n of_o believe_v as_o in_o our_o act_n of_o other_o gift_n there_o be_v no_o man_n under_o heaven_n have_v attain_v unto_o that_o height_n of_o believe_v or_o that_o strength_n of_o faith_n but_o there_o be_v still_o something_o want_v some_o imperfection_n and_o sinfulness_n in_o it_o and_o as_o there_o be_v weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o believe_v so_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o this_o believe_v shall_v give_v forth_o such_o a_o righteousness_n as_o to_o constitute_v a_o person_n who_o be_v unrighteous_a in_o himself_o to_o be_v righteous_a before_o god_n that_o which_o can_v set_v itself_o complete_a and_o righteous_a before_o god_n can_v never_o set_v another_o righteous_a before_o god_n faith_n must_v be_v first_o just_a itself_o or_o else_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a it_o shall_v be_v imagine_v it_o can_v ever_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o its_o own_o act_n justify_v another_o belove_a what_o ever_o the_o scripture_n speak_v concern_v faith_n justify_v it_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v objective_o or_o declarative_o one_o of_o these_o two_o way_n either_o faith_n be_v say_v to_o be_v our_o righteousness_n in_o respect_n of_o christ_n only_o who_o be_v believe_v on_o and_o so_o it_o be_v not_o the_o righteousness_n of_o his_o own_o act_n of_o believe_v but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o he_o that_o be_v apprehend_v by_o that_o act_n of_o believe_v or_o else_o you_o must_v understand_v it_o declarative_o that_o be_v whereas_o all_o our_o righteousness_n and_o all_o our_o discharge_n from_o sin_n flow_v only_o from_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n alone_o be_v a_o hide_a thing_n that_o which_o in_o itself_o be_v hide_v to_o man_n do_v become_v evident_a by_o believe_v and_o as_o faith_n do_v make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n evident_a to_o the_o believer_n so_o it_o be_v say_v to_o justify_v by_o its_o own_o act_n declarative_o and_o no_o otherwise_o and_o whereas_o in_o the_o 5._o chapter_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o the_o 1._o verse_n the_o apostle_n there_o say_v be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n in_o rom._n 8._o vers_fw-la 33._o the_o apostle_n say_v it_o be_v god_n that_o justifi_v now_o i_o beseech_v you_o compare_v these_o text_n together_o then_o tell_v i_o whether_o the_o act_n of_o believe_v except_o it_o have_v reference_n to_o the_o object_n which_o be_v christ_n of_o itself_o do_v justify_v justify_v it_o speak_v of_o faith_n as_o lay_v hold_n upon_o god_n for_o our_o justification_n and_o therefore_o though_o faith_n do_v here_o appear_v as_o that_o which_o do_v lay_v hold_n upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n yet_o faith_n here_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v that_o righteousness_n that_o do_v justify_v we_o ob._n but_o i_o know_v some_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v as_o if_o say_v have_v any_o innate_a power_n of_o its_o own_o to_o procure_v the_o discharge_n or_o pardon_v from_o sin_n but_o say_v be_v to_o be_v understand_v as_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n that_o lay_v hold_v upon_o that_o justification_n and_o so_o it_o go_v before_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o person_n and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v no_o otherwise_o answ_n i_o shall_v desire_v to_o keep_v in_o the_o plain_a path_n for_o the_o clear_n up_o of_o this_o truth_n and_o so_o far_o as_o possible_a may_v be_v i_o abhor_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o cloud_n in_o a_o truth_n that_o so_o high_o concern_v the_o comfort_n and_o establish_v the_o conscience_n and_o spirit_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o i_o say_v that_o faith_n as_o it_o lay_v hold_v upon_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n it_o do_v not_o bring_v this_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n to_o the_o soul_n but_o only_o do_v declare_v the_o presence_n of_o this_o righteousness_n in_o the_o 〈◊〉_d that_o be_v there_o even_o before_o faith_n be_v i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v i_o well_o i_o know_v belove_v i_o have_v many_o very_a catch_a ear_n about_o i_o i_o speak_v it_o the_o rather_o that_o there_o may_v be_v the_o more_o wariness_n because_o there_o be_v frequent_a misunderstanding_n &_o mistaking_n of_o the_o thing_n i_o deliver_v especial_o by_o those_o that_o come_v to_o catch_v i_o say_v again_o there_o be_v no_o pâ—â—son_n under_o heaven_n reconcile_v unto_o god_n justify_v by_o god_n through_o â—he_n righteousness_n of_o christ_n but_o this_o person_n be_v justify_v and_o reconcile_v unto_o god_n before_o he_o do_v believe_v and_o therefore_o faith_n be_v not_o the_o instrument_n radical_o to_o unite_v christ_n and_o the_o soul_n together_o but_o rather_o be_v the_o fruit_n that_o follow_v &_o flow_v from_o christ_n the_o root_n be_v unite_v before_o hand_n to_o the_o person_n that_o do_v believe_v so_o that_o the_o efficacy_n and_o power_n of_o believe_v be_v to_o be_v instrumental_a for_o the_o declaration_n of_o a_o act_n that_o be_v do_v before_o only_o it_o be_v hide_v for_o the_o clear_n up_o of_o this_o to_o you_o belove_v consider_v that_o expression_n in_o the_o 12._o chapter_n to_o the_o hebrew_n vers_fw-la 1._o i'faith_o say_v the_o apostle_n

unite_v unto_o christ_n receive_v this_o faith_n of_o they_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o unite_v unto_o christ_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v come_v from_o he_o for_o we_o can_v have_v nothing_o of_o christ_n but_o by_o virtue_n of_o union_n and_o then_o it_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n neither_o for_o we_o partake_v of_o that_o only_a by_o virtue_n of_o union_n with_o he_o and_o flow_v out_o into_o the_o branch_n from_o the_o root_n but_o this_o you_o will_v say_v be_v but_o a_o parabolicall_a expression_n and_o parable_n preve_n nothing_o i_o answer_v whereas_o christ_n be_v please_v to_o apply_v the_o parabie_n his_o application_n of_o the_o parable_n have_v as_o full_a a_o proof_n in_o itself_o as_o any_o scripture_n whatsoever_o now_o in_o this_o place_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o christ_n do_v make_v exact_a application_n of_o it_o himself_o to_o the_o purpose_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o as_o we_o sinde_v in_o these_o word_n as_o the_o branch_n can_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n except_o it_o abide_v in_o the_o vine_n no_o more_o can_v you_o exceptye_v abide_v in_o i_o i_o be_o the_o vine_n you_o be_v the_o branch_n etc._n etc._n you_o can_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n except_o you_o abide_v in_o the_o vine_n and_o do_v you_o abide_v in_o the_o vine_n when_o you_o be_v not_o unit_v unto_o christ_n no_o man_n can_v say_v it_o can_v you_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n before_o you_o be_v in_o the_o vine_n can_v you_o believe_v before_o you_o be_v in_o christ_n belove_a it_o be_v as_o great_a a_o absurdity_n to_o say_v you_o can_v as_o to_o say_v a_o branch_n can_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n without_o a_o root_n so_o that_o belove_v you_o must_v hold_v this_o for_o a_o undeniable_a truth_n you_o can_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n except_o you_o abide_v whereas_o he_o come_v of_o purpose_n to_o open_v the_o blind_a eye_n and_o be_v give_v for_o this_o very_a thing_n to_o open_v the_o blind_a eye_n the_o eye_n be_v open_v already_o and_o this_o work_n be_v do_v before_o he_o come_v and_o so_o his_o come_n and_o the_o end_n thereof_o be_v make_v frustrate_a &_o in_o vain_a in_o that_o respect_n in_o brief_a suppose_v that_o our_o faith_n do_v act_n towards_o the_o discharge_n of_o our_o transgression_n than_o it_o must_v follow_v it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n that_o plead_v by_o way_n of_o advocateship_n with_o the_o father_n for_o this_o discharge_n if_o thou_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n &_o plead_v out_o that_o for_o thyself_o by_o virtue_n of_o thy_o faith_n which_o his_o righteousness_n alone_o be_v appoint_v for_o to_o do_v and_o do_v not_o whole_o cast_v thyself_o upon_o that_o as_o that_o which_o will_v bear_v thou_o out_o in_o all_o thy_o approach_n to_o god_n but_o join_v thy_o faith_n withal_o in_o the_o manner_n i_o have_v speak_v and_o say_v in_o thy_o heart_n i_o believe_v and_o in_o that_o plead_v thy_o discharge_n if_o you_o put_v this_o into_o your_o plea_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o sin_n christ_n only_o be_v not_o your_o sole_a advocate_n but_o your_o faith_n also_o do_v concur_v with_o christ_n in_o this_o office_n of_o advocateship_n and_o so_o you_o make_v it_o your_o saviour_n than_o which_o what_o can_v be_v more_o dishonourable_a and_o more_o derogatory_n unto_o this_o glorious_a office_n of_o he_o for_o if_o we_o must_v believe_v before_o god_n will_v justify_v we_o than_o the_o simple_a and_o only_a plea_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n alone_o be_v not_o all-sufficient_a for_o god_n to_o pardon_n or_o to_o discharge_v sin_n for_o suppose_v i_o have_v not_o yet_o believe_v now_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n it_o seem_v have_v not_o strength_n enough_o till_o my_o believe_v come_v in_o and_o join_v with_o that_o righteousness_n but_o it_o be_v only_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n that_o plead_v out_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o person_n and_o not_o the_o concurrence_n of_o our_o believe_v that_o plead_v it_o out_o our_o believe_v i_o confess_v give_v comfortable_a testimony_n that_o god_n have_v free_o justify_v person_n in_o and_o through_o the_o alone_a righteousness_n of_o his_o son_n christ_n our_o believe_v do_v conduce_v to_o the_o declaration_n and_o manifestation_n of_o that_o which_o god_n for_o christ_n righteousness_n sake_n do_v do_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v evidence_n of_o this_o thing_n but_o it_o be_v not_o our_o believe_v that_o work_v the_o thing_n itself_o now_o it_o remain_v we_o go_v on_o and_o consider_v further_o affirmative_o what_o this_o righteousness_n of_o he_o be_v that_o carry_v the_o whole_a strength_n of_o the_o plea_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n from_o their_o sin_n which_o they_o have_v commit_v i_o say_v it_o be_v his_o righteousness_n and_o his_o alone_a now_o this_o righteousness_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v in_o the_o quality_n quantity_n and_o nature_n of_o it_o concern_v the_o quality_n and_o quantity_n of_o it_o in_o brief_a that_o righteousness_n that_o have_v the_o strength_n of_o plea_n for_o the_o discharge_n charge_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o god_n own_o people_n both_o for_o quantity_n and_o quality_n it_o must_v be_v so_o powerful_a and_o so_o large_a and_o spacious_a that_o it_o may_v serve_v to_o cover_v the_o whole_a nakedness_n of_o the_o person_n who_o it_o do_v concerâ—â—_n i_o â—ay_v this_o righteousness_n of_o he_o have_v so_o
clear_n up_o of_o this_o truth_n that_o a_o soul_n must_v be_v unite_v unto_o christ_n by_o christ_n own_o power_n before_o can_v there_o be_v believe_v on_o he_o but_o belove_v whereas_o we_o have_v think_v the_o truth_n have_v be_v clear_v up_o sufficient_o i_o have_v find_v it_o otherwise_o i_o find_v that_o many_o stick_n and_o stumble_v at_o this_o assertion_n there_o must_v be_v believe_v faâ—_n some_o before_o there_o can_v be_v union_n with_o christ_n and_o it_o be_v believe_v itself_o that_o make_v up_o the_o firâ—â—_n union_n with_o he_o since_o the_o last_o time_n i_o speak_v unto_o you_o i_o have_v receive_v and_o i_o suppose_v from_o a_o ingenuous_a spirit_n for_o under_o such_o a_o stile_n it_o come_v a_o objection_n against_o this_o assertion_n and_o weigh_v the_o objection_n i_o sinde_v it_o of_o weight_n enough_o to_o require_v a_o answer_n beside_o i_o find_v that_o divers_a other_o person_n exceed_o stick_v and_o stumble_v at_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v desire_v to_o clear_v up_o this_o one_o thing_n both_o by_o answer_v such_o objection_n that_o may_v be_v make_v against_o it_o as_o also_o by_o let_v you_o see_v what_o danger_n necessary_o follow_v upon_o the_o contrary_n i_o shall_v and_o do_v commend_v the_o candidnesse_n and_o ingenuity_n of_o those_o that_o seek_v to_o be_v inform_v in_o thing_n they_o not_o yet_o so_o clear_o understand_v while_o they_o do_v it_o with_o a_o spirit_n rather_o seek_v satisfaction_n then_o to_o maintain_v contention_n object_n the_o objection_n propose_v be_v brief_o this_o our_o saviour_n
