word_n and_o sacrament_n to_o which_o we_o must_v join_v meditation_n all_o these_o i_o say_v we_o must_v use_v 1._o constant_o that_o be_v without_o omission_n or_o neglect_n of_o they_o in_o their_o due_a season_n 2._o devout_o always_o endeavour_v to_o come_v to_o they_o with_o due_a temper_n and_o then_o engage_v our_o heart_n in_o they_o and_o 3._o wisely_n remember_v our_o christian_a want_n and_o apply_v these_o as_o the_o outward_a mean_n which_o god_n have_v put_v in_o our_o power_n and_o whereby_o he_o have_v command_v we_o to_o address_v ourselves_o to_o he_o for_o all_o grace_n and_o aid_n we_o can_v want_v but_o it_o may_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o touch_v in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o upon_o each_o particular_o first_o as_o to_o prayer_n both_o public_a and_o private_a as_o we_o will_v either_o bring_v or_o keep_v our_o heart_n under_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n let_v none_o of_o the_o state_v opportunity_n of_o it_o be_v neglect_v and_o when_o we_o come_v thereto_o let_v we_o before_o we_o open_v our_o mouth_n set_v god_n before_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o soul_n as_o then_o more_o especial_o present_a and_o take_v care_n we_o seek_v to_o he_o with_o our_o soul_n or_o mean_n to_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n let_v we_o i_o say_v remember_v in_o what_o of_o the_o particular_n so_o often_o mention_v we_o be_v deficient_a or_o whether_o not_o in_o all_o do_v we_o want_v knowledge_n of_o what_o we_o be_v to_o believe_v or_o do_v in_o order_n to_o salvation_n let_v we_o earnest_o supplicate_v to_o god_n that_o he_o will_v inlighten_v our_o mind_n strengthen_v our_o power_n assist_v and_o bless_v our_o endeavour_n after_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o holy_a he_o give_v wisdom_n liberal_o to_o all_o who_o ask_v and_o upbraid_v none_o jam._n 1._o 5._o do_v we_o know_v enough_o but_o find_v it_o difficult_a to_o believe_v faith_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n let_v we_o beseech_v he_o he_o will_v both_o furnish_v we_o with_o more_o press_v evidence_n of_o his_o truth_n than_o haply_o be_v yet_o to_o come_v to_o our_o knowledge_n and_o more_o deep_o affect_v our_o heart_n with_o those_o we_o have_v that_o be_v true_o persuade_v in_o our_o whole_a christianity_n our_o faith_n may_v never_o fail_v do_v we_o want_v attentive_a and_o heedful_a mind_n let_v we_o beg_v of_o he_o that_o he_o will_v both_o set_v and_o keep_v his_o law_n to_o a_o considerative_a heedful_a state_n of_o mind_n to_o honest_a resolution_n and_o endeavour_n of_o integrity_n or_o walk_v in_o all_o good_a conscience_n before_o god_n and_o in_o a_o word_n to_o the_o due_a christian_a temper_n hereof_o the_o cxix_o psalm_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n throughout_o a_o ample_a proof_n and_o 3._o no_o less_o must_v i_o say_v of_o the_o sacrament_n reflect_v upon_o our_o own_o baptismal_a vow_n when_o we_o be_v present_a at_o the_o baptism_n of_o other_o and_o frequent_a renew_n it_o at_o the_o lord_n table_n as_o it_o lead_v we_o to_o a_o more_o strict_a solemn_a and_o mature_a examination_n of_o ourselves_o so_o certain_o above_o all_o other_o mean_n strengthen_v the_o interest_n of_o godliness_n in_o our_o heart_n i_o may_v confident_o say_v one_o great_a reason_n of_o the_o christian_a multitude_n not_o live_v in_o better_a conscience_n towards_o god_n be_v their_o have_v be_v accustom_v to_o so_o much_o neglect_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o blood_n of_o christ_n will_v both_o warm_a and_o awe_n man_n heart_n 4._o but_o we_o can_v always_o pray_v hear_v or_o communicate_v think_v or_o meditate_v we_o may_v often_o and_o this_o aught_o to_o go_v in_o conjunction_n general_o with_o all_o those_o other_o duty_n a_o man_n never_o pray_v as_o he_o shall_v except_o he_o spend_v some_o thought_n beforehand_o in_o examine_v his_o conscience_n the_o same_o may_v i_o say_v much_o more_o of_o receive_v the_o lord_n supper_n this_o undoubted_o require_v more_o thought_n forego_v and_o very_o little_a will_v be_v our_o benefit_n by_o hear_v except_o afterward_o we_o recollect_v and_o by_o some_o meditation_n endeavour_n to_o fix_v upon_o our_o spirit_n what_o we_o have_v hear_v most_o touch_a our_o own_o condition_n i_o may_v not_o stand_v here_o to_o discourse_v that_o meditation_n be_v either_o occasional_a or_o solemn_a both_o of_o they_o certain_o in_o their_o season_n ought_v to_o exercise_v every_o christian_n as_o godly_a man_n character_n as_o it_o be_v indeed_o his_o great_a preservative_n against_o both_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o ungodly_a and_o the_o way_n of_o sinner_n that_o he_o meditate_v in_o the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n and_o night_n it_o be_v according_o very_o much_o david_n own_o practice_n as_o we_o may_v observe_v through_o the_o whole_a book_n of_o psalm_n many_o of_o which_o be_v certain_o compose_v in_o part_n or_o in_o whole_a by_o he_o upon_o his_o bed_n by_o night_n as_o well_o as_o other_o by_o day_n and_o it_o be_v very_o well_o if_o more_o of_o the_o wake_a part_n of_o our_o repose_n be_v spend_v in_o commune_v with_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o god_n upon_o our_o bed_n then_o general_o we_o be_v or_o may_v be_v still_o and_o free_a from_o outward_a disturbance_n but_o as_o man_n that_o be_v wise_a in_o this_o generation_n employ_v and_o catch_v all_o season_n of_o get_v so_o shall_v those_o who_o be_v or_o will_v be_v child_n of_o light_n all_o opportunity_n for_o holy_a thought_n as_o be_v singular_o serviceable_a to_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o thus_o as_o to_o the_o private_a directory_n part_n both_o particular_a and_o general_a §_o 4._o something_o may_v be_v do_v as_o to_o the_o public_a and_o for_o propagate_a the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o other_o by_o magistrate_n minister_n parent_n or_o head_n of_o family_n first_o all_z these_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v happy_o join_v in_o promote_a the_o due_a observation_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n magistrate_n in_o aw_v and_o drive_v idler_n or_o such_o who_o devotion_n lead_v they_o not_o to_o church_n morning_n and_o evening_n minister_n in_o be_v diligent_a and_o zealous_a in_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n discreet_o suit_v both_o their_o sermon_n and_o catechise_n to_o this_o end_n of_o affect_v man_n heart_n with_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o as_o they_o see_v fit_a comply_v with_o such_o method_n as_o those_o above_o propound_v thereto_o parent_n and_o master_n of_o family_n in_o be_v aid_v and_o assistant_n to_o the_o magistrate_n and_o minister_n in_o see_v their_o child_n and_o servant_n due_o and_o orderly_o frequent_v the_o church_n come_v as_o require_v to_o catechism_n or_o the_o sacrament_n
36._o not_o a_o just_a man_n upon_o earth_n that_o do_v good_a and_o sin_v not_o eccles_n seven_o 20._o and_o the_o like_a passage_n of_o st._n james_n and_o st._n john_n so_o well_o know_v that_o they_o need_v not_o to_o be_v cite_v and_o further_o they_o may_v say_v if_o there_o be_v any_o man_n of_o such_o excellent_a temper_n as_o just_a now_o describe_v what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o we_o find_v some_o who_o we_o take_v to_o be_v of_o the_o best_a of_o man_n and_o in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n have_v undoubted_o have_v good_a effect_n complain_v notwithstanding_o of_o the_o dulness_n hardness_n and_o worldliness_n of_o their_o heart_n though_o too_o many_o be_v all_o be_v not_o hypocrite_n in_o these_o complaint_n nor_o be_v the_o complaint_n mere_o cant._n my_o answer_n hereto_o shall_v be_v first_o by_o desire_v my_o expression_n before_o may_v be_v careful_o consider_v and_o not_o strain_v beyond_o their_o import_n or_o my_o intention_n i_o have_v say_v man_n in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n prevail_v general_o that_o be_v for_o the_o main_a attend_v unto_o the_o christian_a doctrine_n and_o examine_v and_o judge_v such_o action_n as_o occur_v thereby_o that_o they_o comply_v with_o such_o judgement_n and_o endeavour_v constancy_n in_o such_o compliance_n that_o hereby_o they_o arrive_v at_o this_o pitch_n not_o to_o allow_v themselves_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o any_o know_a sin_n or_o in_o the_o neglect_n of_o any_o know_a duty_n and_o thence_o follow_v general_o or_o habitual_o such_o a_o temper_n of_o heart_n as_o describe_v i_o do_v not_o say_v nor_o do_v i_o mean_v that_o in_o some_o one_o or_o few_o single_a instance_n it_o be_v never_o otherwise_o in_o any_o of_o the_o particular_n there_o come_v a_o traveller_n 2_o sam._n twelve_o 4._o that_o be_v there_o enter_v a_o act_n of_o lust_n which_o be_v a_o stranger_n there_o unto_o david_n and_o he_o be_v afterward_o for_o a_o considerable_a time_n in_o a_o very_a strange_a temper_n but_o i_o do_v say_v now_o 2._o such_o lapse_n miscarriage_n or_o crime_n and_o any_o internal_a distemper_n consequent_a thereupon_o in_o good_a man_n proceed_v not_o doubtless_o from_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o they_o but_o from_o the_o defect_n interruption_n or_o some_o violent_a obstruction_n of_o it_o and_o if_o very_o good_a man_n too_o little_o express_v or_o not_o constant_o enough_o comply_v with_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n that_o will_v not_o warrant_v any_o person_n either_o who_o be_v to_o teach_v it_o for_o state_v it_o too_o low_a or_o who_o be_v to_o practise_v it_o for_o not_o aim_v above_o the_o fault_n of_o such_o precedent_n and_o as_o to_o david_n case_n it_o be_v sure_a david_n do_v live_v and_o be_v general_o what_o i_o have_v describe_v and_o though_o this_o practice_n and_o this_o temper_n be_v for_o a_o while_n by_o that_o dreadful_a fall_n interrupt_v yet_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n prevail_v again_o and_o final_o so_o that_o he_o recover_v and_o remaintain_v both_o but_o as_o far_o forth_o as_o either_o fail_v so_o far_o forth_o at_o that_o time_n or_o time_n come_v he_o short_a of_o approve_v himself_o a_o person_n actuate_v by_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o in_o the_o great_a instance_n mention_v there_o be_v no_o doubt_n till_o his_o recovery_n he_o forfeit_v both_o god_n favour_n and_o all_o claim_n he_o can_v lay_v to_o be_v a_o godly_a man_n though_o i_o do_v not_o think_v the_o internal_a principle_n of_o holiness_n be_v thereby_o in_o he_o quite_o extinct_a nor_o be_v habit_n raze_v out_o of_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n but_o as_o they_o be_v introduce_v that_o be_v by_o frequent_a practice_n or_o repetion_n of_o act_n last_o and_o distincty_a as_o to_o what_o sin_n may_v be_v conceive_v consistent_a with_o the_o general_a prevalence_n of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o man_n for_o my_o own_o part_n i_o take_v sin_n of_o ignorance_n and_o of_o error_n even_o under_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v sin_n true_o so_o call_v and_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n as_o well_o on_o our_o hand_n of_o a_o general_a repentance_n or_o repentance_n of_o they_o in_o the_o lump_n if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o of_o a_o pardon_n on_o god_n now_o that_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a man_n these_o be_v frequent_a there_o be_v no_o doubt_n and_o as_o to_o sin_n of_o surprisal_n common_a inadvertency_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o infirmity_n of_o passion_n seize_v we_o together_o with_o the_o distemper_n of_o mind_n dulness_n flatness_n hardness_n in_o some_o measure_n discomposedness_n and_o what_o else_o may_v flow_v from_o such_o original_n not_o allow_v there_o can_v be_v no_o question_n but_o they_o may_v be_v and_o be_v incident_a unto_o those_o man_n in_o who_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n most_o prevail_v for_o we_o be_v here_o man_n have_v flesh_n and_o blood_n about_o we_o and_o not_o angel_n but_o as_o to_o deliberate_v sin_v though_o the_o time_n of_o deliberation_n shall_v be_v but_o short_a still_o i_o stand_v to_o it_o the_o allow_v a_o man_n self_n in_o any_o know_a sin_n whether_o of_o commission_n or_o omission_n be_v contrary_a to_o irreconcilable_a with_o and_o in_o tantum_fw-la for_o so_o much_o destructive_a of_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n nor_o may_v any_o person_n so_o allow_v himself_o conclude_v while_o he_o so_o allow_v or_o have_v not_o recover_v himself_o by_o mature_a repentance_n that_o he_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n or_o conduct_v of_o god_n spirit_n or_o indeed_o in_o a_o savable_a condition_n for_o know_v you_o not_o to_o who_o you_o yield_v yourselves_o servant_n to_o obey_v his_o servant_n you_o be_v to_o who_o you_o obey_v whether_o of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o observe_v this_o yield_a ourselves_o to_o obey_v sin_n be_v in_o itself_o unto_o death_n and_o ver_fw-la 20._o be_v servant_n of_o sin_n you_o be_v free_a from_o righteousness_n out_o of_o a_o justify_v estate_n for_z v._n 21._o the_o end_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o v._n 23._o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n nor_o do_v i_o doubt_v but_o in_o this_o doctrine_n i_o be_o faithful_a as_o well_o as_o tender_v to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n §_o 6._o now_o of_o these_o thing_n which_o on_o this_o head_n we_o have_v say_v the_o sum_n be_v godliness_n at_o least_o as_o the_o world_n now_o stand_v do_v not_o usual_o get_v power_n over_o man_n but_o by_o several_a degree_n we_o be_v first_o bring_v to_o the_o understanding_n of_o then_o to_o a_o conviction_n and_o belief_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christian_a faith_n and_o manner_n hereby_o conscience_n awaken_v as_o well_o as_o enlighten_v attend_v its_o office_n judge_n and_o dictate_v aright_o with_o these_o dictate_v the_o man_n comply_v as_o sway_v by_o what_o he_o be_v before_o suppose_a to_o believe_v which_o belief_n sway_v not_o to_o comply_v only_o in_o some_o few_o single_a instance_n but_o to_o endeavour_v a_o universal_a conformity_n to_o good_a conscience_n and_o the_o evangelical_n law_n the_o sense_n of_o both_o which_o be_v suppose_v by_o this_o time_n to_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o from_o this_o constant_a and_o honest_a endeavour_n of_o such_o conformity_n the_o rule_n of_o our_o duty_n proceed_v a_o facility_n and_o cheerfulness_n in_o holy_a practice_n and_o from_o thence_o a_o general_a seriousness_n tenderness_n and_o heavenliness_n of_o mind_n now_o in_o as_o many_o as_o lead_v this_o life_n though_o with_o a_o multitude_n of_o infirmity_n to_o which_o flesh_n and_o blood_n be_v subject_a i_o say_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n appear_v or_o godliness_n have_v obtain_v its_o due_a power_n for_o it_o have_v transform_v such_o man_n life_n and_o heart_n and_o though_o it_o have_v not_o set_v they_o above_o all_o sin_n and_o all_o disorder_n of_o mind_n which_o to_o do_v in_o this_o life_n be_v not_o the_o pretence_n of_o christianity_n yet_o have_v it_o wrought_v out_o all_o the_o old_a leaven_n of_o malice_n and_o wickedness_n 1_o cor._n v._o 8._o of_o vicious_a self_n love_n of_o covetousness_n pride_n disobedience_n formality_n and_o the_o other_o evil_n tax_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o famous_a 2_o tim._n three_o 2_o 3_o etc._n etc._n and_o replenish_v their_o soul_n with_o sincerity_n and_o truth_n of_o holiness_n with_o a_o amiable_a and_o heavenly_a temper_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n godliness_n here_o be_v to_o effect_v therefore_o in_o and_o on_o such_o godliness_n through_o divine_a grace_n have_v its_o due_a power_n and_o into_o this_o estate_n may_v every_o one_o who_o read_v this_o find_v himself_o transform_v amen_n chap._n iii_o of_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n sect._n 1_o the_o practice_n by_o which_o man_n deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n reduce_v to_o two_o head_n sect
man_n design_v such_o life_n resolve_v never_o to_o trouble_v their_o head_n with_o the_o understanding_n or_o comprehend_v such_o doctrine_n which_o so_o much_o disturb_v they_o and_z as_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o embroil_n the_o world_n these_o man_n study_v ignorance_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o a_o stupid_a quiet_n and_o design_o abandon_v and_o defy_v all_o mean_n of_o religious_a knowledge_n a_o desperate_a sort_n of_o blind_a man_n indeed_o now_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o both_o and_o all_o these_o our_o church_n ignorant_o and_o our_o outlying-ignorants_a and_o that_o whether_o through_o supine_n negligence_n and_o sloth_n or_o through_o resolute_a design_n and_o obstinacy_n all_o of_o they_o i_o say_v deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n whatsoever_o they_o may_v have_v or_o retain_v of_o the_o form_n for_o they_o stop_v the_o very_a first_o passage_n by_o which_o godliness_n can_v come_v at_o their_o heart_n or_o ever_o have_v any_o power_n over_o they_o namely_o they_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o enter_v into_o their_o understanding_n 2._o man_n obstruct_v and_o so_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n by_o voluntary_a unbelief_n and_o i_o must_v here_o say_v the_o same_o of_o the_o unbelief_n of_o this_o age_n which_o i_o do_v just_a now_o of_o its_o ignorance_n there_o be_v speak_v only_o of_o such_o who_o have_v their_o sense_n little_a or_o no_o gross_a unbelief_n to_o be_v find_v among_o we_o which_o be_v not_o voluntary_a it_o be_v general_o matter_n of_o man_n choice_n either_o in_o itself_o direct_o or_o indirect_o in_o its_o cause_n if_o man_n affect_v ignorance_n and_o so_o believe_v not_o either_o because_o they_o understand_v not_o the_o doctrine_n to_o be_v believe_v or_o see_v not_o the_o evidence_n which_o persuade_v they_o who_o shall_v say_v that_o unbelief_n be_v not_o choose_v when_o the_o ignorance_n whence_o it_o derive_v be_v apparent_o such_o but_o if_o any_o who_o both_o understand_v the_o christian_a doctrine_n and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o evidence_n upon_o which_o it_o be_v pretend_v to_o be_v believe_v do_v yet_o withstand_v and_o cavil_v at_o those_o evidence_n endeavour_v to_o find_v or_o make_v flaw_n in_o they_o whereas_o in_o truth_n there_o be_v none_o and_o then_o dispute_v touch_v their_o insufficiency_n expose_v they_o and_o demand_v evidence_n either_o impossible_a that_o be_v such_o which_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o cause_n admit_v not_o or_o unreasonable_a if_o i_o say_v any_o man_n in_o these_o circumstance_n and_o thus_o act_v believe_v not_o it_o be_v plain_a such_o man_n unbelief_n be_v matter_n of_o industry_n endeavour_v and_o design_n and_o so_o not_o only_o of_o deliberate_a but_o obstinate_a choice_n now_o such_o perverse_a spirit_n may_v be_v find_v now_o adays_o too_o rife_o as_o well_o as_o those_o more_o lazy_a unbeliever_n before_o mention_v and_o both_o sort_n undoubted_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n for_o both_o obstruct_v the_o persuasion_n of_o its_o reality_n in_o their_o heart_n without_o which_o persuasion_n it_o be_v plain_a religion_n must_v be_v but_o a_o insignificant_a pretence_n of_o no_o prevalence_n or_o force_n last_o man_n may_v hinder_v and_o so_o deny_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n by_o a_o voluntary_a heedlessness_n it_o will_v look_v somewhat_o hard_o perhaps_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o most_o to_o call_v all_o the_o inadvertency_n and_o incogitancy_n which_o in_o common_a conversation_n betray_v man_n into_o sin_n voluntary_a one_o inasmuch_o as_o many_o seem_v
