nature_n to_o receive_v contrary_a impression_n and_o nothing_o so_o much_o as_o converse_v expose_v we_o to_o the_o reception_n of_o they_o so_o that_o this_o be_v like_o a_o ill_a air_n to_o the_o body_n which_o often_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o it_o 4._o four_o as_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n be_v hinder_v by_o some_o disease_n the_o growth_n of_o a_o plant_n by_o some_o canker_n or_o some_o ill_a wind_n or_o by_o the_o check_n which_o it_o may_v have_v by_o the_o bite_n of_o some_o beast_n so_o may_v the_o growth_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v much_o hinder_v 1._o by_o the_o prevailing_n of_o some_o particular_a corruption_n 2._o or_o by_o the_o wound_n which_o the_o soul_n receive_v from_o some_o temptation_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v some_o sickness_n in_o which_o person_n shoot_v out_o and_o by_o which_o they_o be_v rather_o advantage_v than_o hinder_v in_o their_o growth_n but_o there_o be_v other_o habituate_v distemper_n which_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o young_a person_n there_o be_v no_o prevail_a corruption_n but_o give_v a_o check_n to_o a_o growth_n in_o grace_n though_o sometime_o the_o prevail_a of_o it_o do_v by_o accident_n promote_v grace_n in_o its_o exercise_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o corinthian_n 2_o cor._n 7.11_o but_o prevail_a lust_n do_v wonderful_o hinder_v proficiency_n in_o grace_n to_o instance_n but_o in_o that_o one_o lust_n of_o earthly_a mindedness_n let_v but_o a_o earthly_a covetous_a mind_n prevail_v upon_o any_o it_o be_v a_o wonderful_a thing_n to_o observe_v how_o it_o check_v all_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o grace_n yea_o and_o long_a and_o violent_a temptation_n do_v also_o much_o hinder_v the_o soul_n growth_n they_o be_v like_o cold_a wind_n or_o the_o bite_n of_o beast_n to_o the_o plant_n which_o discourage_n the_o growth_n of_o they_o though_o they_o be_v not_o internal_a cause_n yet_o they_o be_v external_a cause_n of_o the_o plant_n unthriftiness_n so_o it_o be_v with_o long_a and_o violent_a temptation_n they_o indeed_o do_v not_o work_v as_o internal_a cause_n i_o mean_v such_o temptation_n as_o be_v ab_fw-la host_n from_o our_o grand_a adversary_n to_o hinder_v a_o christian_n growth_n but_o they_o be_v great_a external_a cause_n discourage_v the_o soul_n in_o almost_o all_o its_o exercise_n of_o communion_n with_o that_o the_o lord_n never_o withdraw_v what_o of_o his_o spiritual_a influence_n upon_o the_o soul_n be_v necessary_a to_o uphold_v and_o maintain_v the_o spiritual_a union_n and_o life_n but_o no_o soul_n flourish_v and_o increase_v much_o under_o such_o a_o dispensation_n it_o stand_v in_o the_o shadow_n and_o want_v those_o beam_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o its_o bear_n and_o bring_v think_v madam_n i_o discern_v two_o great_a error_n in_o the_o world_n 1._o the_o judgement_n of_o truth_n 2._o of_o the_o love_n and_o hatred_n of_o god_n from_o motion_n and_o issue_n of_o providence_n hence_o because_o god_n in_o his_o providence_n have_v order_v the_o production_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n give_v they_o life_n and_o be_v and_o his_o gospel_n to_o be_v preach_v in_o their_o hear_n so_o as_o they_o be_v external_o call_v to_o repent_v and_o to_o believe_v man_n conclude_v there_o be_v no_o election_n of_o person_n that_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o all_o and_o every_o man_n that_o every_o man_n have_v a_o power_n to_o repent_v believe_v love_n god_n hate_v sin_n etc._n etc._n and_o i_o wish_v a_o modest_a denial_n of_o divine_a truth_n be_v the_o worst_a but_o we_o be_v fall_v into_o a_o rude_a and_o ill_o manner_a age_n when_o every_o puny_a have_v boldness_n enough_o to_o say_v if_o this_o be_v so_o then_o god_n be_v a_o impostor_n and_o mock_n and_o delude_v he_o be_v unjust_a cruel_a i_o tremble_v to_o recite_v it_o when-as_a the_o truth_n be_v it_o be_v neither_o so_o nor_o so_o let_v what_o will_v be_v conclude_v concern_v these_o proposition_n no_o such_o thing_n will_v follow_v i_o have_v madam_n endeavour_v to_o reconcile_v these_o providence_n of_o god_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o these_o proposition_n which_o some_o not_o know_v how_o to_o expound_v some_o word_n of_o god_n but_o as_o we_o be_v teach_v the_o meaning_n of_o they_o by_o his_o providential_a dispensation_n in_o the_o fulfil_n of_o it_o god_n dispensation_n in_o the_o world_n both_o towards_o his_o church_n and_o the_o enemy_n and_o persecutor_n help_v we_o to_o understand_v both_o his_o promise_n and_o his_o threaten_n 2._o he_o who_o observe_v the_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n will_v also_o know_v better_o how_o to_o order_v and_o direct_v his_o life_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o wisdom_n strict_o take_v be_v a_o practical_a church_n and_o with_o particular_a soul_n i_o shall_v lay_v down_o my_o first_o observation_n thus_o 1._o observe_v the_o actual_a providence_n of_o god_n in_o bring_v about_o that_o word_n to_o which_o it_o be_v a_o certain_a servant_n do_v rare_o move_v in_o a_o direct_a line_n but_o sometime_o oblique_o sometime_o to_o our_o appearance_n quite_o contrary_a but_o at_o last_o it_o fulfil_v the_o word_n and_o be_v all_o the_o while_n faithful_o execute_v the_o eternal_a counsel_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o this_o observation_n each_o of_o which_o i_o will_v open_v in_o a_o few_o word_n and_o then_o endeavour_v to_o justify_v the_o observation_n by_o particular_a instance_n after_o which_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o some_o reasonable_a account_n of_o it_o and_o then_o make_v some_o short_a application_n first_o i_o say_v the_o providence_n of_o god_n be_v a_o certain_a servant_n to_o the_o word_n the_o word_n either_o of_o promise_n or_o of_o threaten_v for_o providence_n serve_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o they_o both_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v so_o have_v we_o see_v in_o the_o city_n of_o our_o god_n say_v the_o psalmist_n psal_n 48.8_o the_o promise_n be_v but_o providentia_fw-la occultata_fw-la and_o providence_n be_v but_o promissio_fw-la explicata_fw-la the_o promise_n full_o explain_v and_o open_v and_o this_o be_v no_o more_o than_o you_o shall_v find_v recognize_v by_o the_o holy_a servant_n of_o god_n both_o in_o all_o their_o thanksgiving_n for_o mercy_n they_o have_v receive_v and_o in_o all_o their_o humiliation_n upon_o any_o judgement_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v bring_v on_o they_o as_o also_o in_o all_o the_o narrative_a part_n of_o scripture_n declare_v any_o great_a motion_n of_o providence_n how_o often_o do_v you_o meet_v with_o it_o in_o the_o gospel_n such_o or_o such_o a_o thing_n be_v
to_o heaven_n ordinary_o with_o break_a bone_n and_o a_o bleed_a heart_n so_o that_o you_o see_v that_o god_n get_v himself_o glory_n from_o his_o people_n sin_n give_v no_o man_n a_o ground_n of_o presumption_n to_o go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o sin_n against_o god_n use_v 4._o in_o the_o last_o place_n let_v this_o observation_n mind_v we_o in_o this_o case_n to_o be_v worker_n together_o with_o god_n have_v we_o sin_v and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n let_v we_o do_v our_o endeavour_n to_o make_v our_o sin_n to_o turn_v to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n let_v we_o endeavour_n to_o make_v the_o best_a of_o our_o own_o bad_a market_n what_o be_v do_v we_o can_v recall_n let_v we_o endeavour_v if_o possible_a to_o make_v a_o advantage_n of_o our_o former_a miscarriage_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v that_o be_v answ_n 1._o let_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o sin_n hasten_v your_o pace_n to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n god_n have_v a_o great_a apostle_n because_o i_o persecute_v the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o be_o that_o i_o be_o and_o his_o grace_n which_o be_v bestow_v on_o i_o be_v not_o in_o vain_a but_o i_o labour_v more_o abundant_o than_o they_o all_o o_o this_o will_v be_v a_o excellent_a improvement_n even_o of_o your_o sin_n if_o your_o former_a unholiness_n shall_v now_o help_v to_o make_v you_o more_o holy_a your_o former_a unrighteousness_n shall_v help_v to_o make_v you_o more_o righteous_a for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v your_o reflection_n upon_o how_o much_o you_o have_v reasonableness_n of_o this_o motion_n of_o divine_a providence_n and_o last_o make_v some_o suitable_a application_n 1._o my_o observation_n as_o you_o see_v concern_v the_o motion_n of_o actual_a providence_n as_o to_o its_o distribution_n of_o the_o portion_n of_o this_o life_n the_o pagan_a philosopher_n distribute_v all_o the_o good_a thing_n they_o have_v any_o knowledge_n of_o into_o three_o sort_n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o body_n among_o which_o they_o reckon_v long-life_n health_n strength_n beauty_n etc._n etc._n the_o good_a thing_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o rich_a endowment_n of_o it_o such_o as_o knowledge_n invention_n judgement_n wit_n memory_n and_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n and_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o birth_n ingenuous_a education_n honour_n riches_n all_o these_o have_v a_o goodness_n in_o they_o which_o lie_v in_o their_o suitableness_n to_o the_o use_n of_o humane_a life_n or_o society_n the_o blind_a heathen_a not_o see_v the_o fountainhead_n of_o these_o beautiful_a stream_n ascribe_v they_o to_o fortune_n but_o they_o be_v all_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o providence_n that_o give_v to_o one_o a_o long_o to_o another_o a_o short_a life_n to_o one_o great_a to_o another_o lesser_a measure_n of_o health_n and_o strength_n etc._n etc._n to_o one_o more_o judgement_n wit_n etc._n etc._n than_o to_o another_o but_o i_o chief_o understand_v my_o observation_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o the_o heathen_a call_v bona_fw-la fortunae_fw-la the_o good_a thing_n of_o fortune_n such_o as_o honour_n riches_n etc._n etc._n these_o also_o be_v the_o lord_n he_o it_o be_v say_v moses_n that_o give_v we_o power_n to_o get_v wealth_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o another_o penman_n tell_v we_o that_o promotion_n come_v neither_o from_o the_o east_n nor_o from_o the_o west_n but_o god_n pull_v down_o one_o and_o set_v up_o another_o promotion_n do_v most_o depend_v upon_o the_o favour_n of_o the_o great_a man_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o you_o shall_v observe_v the_o scripture_n everywhere_o make_v god_n the_o author_n of_o the_o favour_n and_o grace_n which_o person_n have_v find_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o world_n 2._o now_o i_o observe_v in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o the_o wheel_n of_o providence_n in_o make_v this_o distribution_n do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n move_v circular_o my_o meaning_n be_v that_o good_a and_o evil_n of_o this_o nature_n have_v as_o all_o humane_a thing_n its_o turn_n and_o vicissitude_n sometime_o to_o good_a man_n sometime_o to_o bad_a man_n the_o heathen_a have_v some_o prospect_n of_o this_o though_o what_o we_o call_v providence_n they_o ascribe_v to_o fortune_n to_o who_o they_o give_v a_o wheel_n to_o signify_v the_o rotation_n of_o all_o these_o sublunary_a contentment_n in_o which_o you_o know_v the_o same_o spoke_n be_v not_o always_o up_o nor_o down_o but_o sometime_o these_o spoke_n be_v uppermost_a by_o and_o by_o they_o be_v at_o the_o ground_n and_o those_o that_o but_o now_o be_v below_o be_v up_o in_o their_o place_n and_o this_o be_v most_o perspicuous_a in_o body_n of_o people_n which_o be_v make_v up_o of_o those_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n that_o divide_v the_o world_n godly_a
do_v do_v this_o for_o to_o say_v that_o these_o be_v second_o thought_n about_o man_n salvation_n when_o he_o be_v lapse_v and_o fall_v be_v to_o blaspheme_v by_o attribute_v change_n of_o mind_n and_o purpose_n to_o god_n and_o a_o successive_a knowledge_n of_o thing_n such_o as_o we_o have_v upon_o the_o event_n so_o ascribe_v humane_a imperfection_n to_o a_o most_o holy_a god_n if_o god_n from_o all_o eternity_n do_v settle_v the_o business_n of_o man_n salvation_n as_o the_o apostle_n say_v he_o do_v ephes_n 1.4_o 5_o 6_o 7._o cousin_n we_o in_o he_o before_o the_o foundation_n of_o will_v never_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n these_o be_v two_o thing_n which_o some_o make_v a_o great_a pother_n with_o that_o they_o may_v establish_v their_o universality_n and_o obtain_v against_o the_o election_n of_o grace_n they_o think_v that_o if_o god_n have_v determine_v the_o certain_a number_n of_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v save_v or_o for_o who_o christ_n die_v other_o shall_v not_o be_v call_v to_o or_o require_v to_o believe_v or_o repent_v nor_o a_o promise_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n and_o life_n make_v to_o they_o in_o case_n of_o their_o repent_v and_o believe_v for_o they_o apprehend_v it_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o truth_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n to_o require_v that_o of_o man_n which_o it_o be_v not_o his_o will_n or_o purpose_n they_o shall_v do_v or_o to_o offer_v they_o life_n and_o salvation_n upon_o a_o condition_n from_o the_o performance_n of_o which_o they_o be_v preclude_v by_o the_o purpose_n of_o god_n we_o must_v adhere_v to_o this_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o contingent_a to_o god_n no_o event_n which_o he_o do_v not_o from_o eternity_n foreknow_v and_o therefore_o foreknow_v because_o he_o will_v either_o to_o effect_v or_o to_o permit_v it_o we_o can_v neither_o allow_v of_o any_o ignorance_n to_o be_v impute_v unto_o god_n nor_o any_o succession_n in_o his_o knowledge_n nor_o apprehend_v it_o possible_a that_o god_n shall_v from_o all_o eternity_n know_v who_o will_v believe_v and_o repent_v which_o none_o can_v without_o his_o special_a grace_n without_o willing_a that_o grace_n to_o they_o by_o virtue_n of_o which_o they_o shall_v put_v forth_o these_o save_a act_n and_o therefore_o such_o to_o who_o he_o do_v not_o by_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n will_v those_o habit_n of_o grace_n must_v be_v pass_v over_o but_o then_o say_v they_o who_o have_v other_o apprehension_n how_o be_v it_o consistent_a with_o the_o truth_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n to_o call_v all_o man_n to_o believe_v and_o to_o repent_v and_o to_o promise_v they_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n upon_o the_o term_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n we_o ask_v they_o how_o it_o be_v consistent_a with_o the_o truth_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n to_o require_v of_o adam_n under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n not_o to_o eat_v of_o the_o tree_n of_o forbid_a fruit_n and_o to_o promise_v he_o life_n upon_o his_o not_o eat_v thereof_o when-as_a it_o be_v plain_a that_o god_n have_v purpose_v to_o permit_v he_o to_o eat_v thereof_o and_o foreknow_v that_o he_o will_v eat_v thereof_o and_o never_o intend_v that_o adam_n or_o any_o of_o his_o posterity_n shall_v come_v to_o heaven_n by_o the_o fulfil_n of_o that_o covenant_n but_o then_o say_v they_o to_o what_o purpose_n be_v these_o precept_n or_o promise_n divers_a answer_n be_v give_v by_o divine_n as_o to_o that_o question_n concern_v those_o who_o be_v call_v to_o repent_v and_o to_o believe_v which_o possible_o will_v hereafter_o fall_v in_o my_o way_n to_o touch_v upon_o at_o present_a as_o to_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v enough_o to_o say_v god_n end_n in_o make_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n with_o adam_n be_v to_o make_v way_n for_o the_o publication_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o exhibition_n and_o publication_n of_o which_o to_o the_o world_n there_o be_v no_o room_n until_o the_o law_n and_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v violate_v and_o man_n that_o be_v create_v in_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o state_n of_o holiness_n have_v fall_v from_o that_o state_n and_o become_v conclude_v under_o wrath_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n observe_v here_o be_v a_o precept_n give_v which_o god_n have_v never_o intend_v shall_v be_v obey_v a_o conditional_a promise_n make_v from_o which_o god_n never_o intend_v that_o any_o man_n shall_v have_v any_o advantage_n and_o in_o that_o appear_v the_o advantage_n of_o this_o instance_n for_o in_o the_o call_v of_o the_o gospel_n to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n though_o the_o lord_n have_v tell_v we_o many_o be_v call_v and_o few_o be_v choose_v although_o all_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v be_v not_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n and_o within_o his_o purpose_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n yet_o some_o be_v and_o some_o say_v non_fw-la proprie_fw-la &_o per_fw-la se_fw-la reprobos_fw-la hortato_n esse_fw-la ad_fw-la fidem_fw-la &_o poenitentiam_fw-la sed_fw-la per_fw-la concomitantiam_fw-la quatenus_fw-la electis_fw-la externa_fw-la societato_fw-la permiscentur_fw-la that_o be_v that_o reprobate_n be_v only_o call_v to_o faith_n and_o repentance_n which_o it_o be_v call_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n god_n in_o and_o by_o it_o relax_v the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n which_o require_v personal_a satisfaction_n to_o divine_a justice_n from_o the_o person_n offend_v and_o a_o perfect_a performance_n of_o the_o whole_a law_n and_o accept_v the_o satisfaction_n give_v to_o divine_a justice_n by_o the_o nature_n offend_v hypostatical_o unite_v to_o the_o person_n that_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o accept_v from_o we_o sincerity_n instead_o of_o perfect_a obedience_n the_o sincere_o willing_a mind_n instead_o of_o the_o
