I. 1 S Paul certifieth them of the good opinion which he had of their faith love and patience 11 and therewithal useth divers reasons for the comforting of them in persecution whereof the châ—efest is taken from the righteous judgement of God PAul and Silvanus and Timotheus unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 2 Grace unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 3 * â— Thes 3.2 3. We are bound to thank God always for you brethren as it is meet because that your faith groweth exceedingly and the charity of every one of you all towards each other aboundeth 4 So that we our selves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience faith in all your persecutions tribulations that ye endure 5 Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgement of God that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God for which ye also suffer 6 Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you 7 And to you who are troubled rest with us when * 1 Th. 4. â—6 the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with †Gr. the angels of his power his mighty angels 8 In flaming fire ‖ Or yeelding taking vengeance on them that know not God and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power 10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints and to be admired in all them that beleeve because our testimony among you was beleeved in that day 11 Wherefore also we pray always for you that our God would ‖ Or woâ—hsafâ— count you worthy of this calling and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness and the work of faith with power 12 That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you and ye in him according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ CHAP. II. 1 He willeth them to continue stedfast in the truth received 3 sheweth that there shall â—e a departure from the faith 9 and a discovery of Antichrist before the day of the Lord come 15 and thereupon repeateth his former exhortation and praâ—eth for them NOw we beseech you brethren by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and by our gathering together unto him 2 That ye be not soon shaken in minde or be troubled neither by spirit nor by word nor by letter as from us as that the day of Christ is at hand 3 Let no man deceive you by any means for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God shewing himself that he is God 5 Remember ye not that when I was yet with you I told you these things 6 And now ye know what ‖ Or â—â—â—â—eth withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work onely he who now letteth will let until he be taken out of the way 8 And then shall that wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume * Isa 11.4 Hos 6.5 Rev. 2 16. with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming 9 Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should beleeve a lie 12 That they all might be damned who beleeved not the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness 13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you brethren beloved of the Lord because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit belief of the truth 14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Therefore brethren stand fast and hold the traditions which ye have been taught whether by word or our epistle 16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God even our Father which hath loved us and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace 17 Comfort your hearts and stablish you in every good word work CHAP. VIII 1 Christ delivereth the woman taken in adultery 12 He preacheth himself the light of the world and justifieth his doctrine 33 answereth the Jews that boasted of Abraham 59 and conveyeth himself from their cruelty JEsus went unto the mount of Olives 2 And early in the morning he came again into the temple and all the people came unto him and he sat down and taught them 3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery and when they had set her in the midst 4 They say unto him Master this woman was taken in adultery in the very act 5 * Levit. 2â— 10 Now Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned but what sayest thou 6 This they said tempting him that they might have to accuse him But Jesus stooped down and with his finger wrote on the ground as though he heard them not 7 So when they continued asking him he lift up himself and said unto them * Deu. 17.7 He that is without sin among you let him first cast a stone at her 8 And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground 9 And they which heard it being convicted by their own conscience went out one by one beginning at the eldest even unto the last and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in the midst 10 When Jesus had lift up himself and saw none but the woman he said unto her Woman where are those thine accusers hath no man condemned thee 11 She said No man Lord. And Jesus said unto her Neither do I condemn thee go and sin no more 12 ¶ Then spake Jesus again unto them saying * Chap. 1.5 and 9.3 I am the light of the world he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life 13 The Pharisees therefore said unto him Thou bearest record of thy self thy record is not true 14 Jesus answered and said unto them * Cha. 5.31 Though I hear record of my self yet my record is true for I know whence I came and whither I go but ye cannot â—ell whence I come and whither I go 15 Ye judge after the flesh I judge no man 16 And yâ—t if I judge my judgement is true for I am not alone but I and the Father that sent me 17 * Deu. 17.6 Mat. 18 1â— It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true 18 I am one that bear witness of my self and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me 19 Then said they unto him Where is thy Father Jesus answered Ye neither know me nor my Father if ye had known me ye should have known my Father also 20 These words spake Jesus in the treasury as he taught in the temple and no man laid hands on him for his hour was not yet come 21 Then said Jesus again unto them I go my way and ye shall seek me and shall die in your sins whither I go ye cannot come 22 Then said the Jews Will he kill himself because he saith Whither I go ye cannot come 23 And he said unto them Ye are
from beneath I am from above ye are of this world I am not of this world 24 I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for if ye beleeve not that I am he ye shall die in your sins 25 Then said thâ—y unto him Who art thou And Jesus saith unto them Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning 26 I have many things to say and to judge of you but he that sent me is true and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him 27 They understood not that he spake to them of the Father 28 Then said â—esâ—â— unto them When ye haâ—e lift up the Son of man then shall ye know that I am he and that I do nothing of myself but as my Father hath taught me I speak these things 29 And he that sent me is with me the Father hath not left me alone for I do always those things that please him 30 As he sâ—ake these words many beleeved on him Then said Jesus to those Jews which beleeved on him If ye continue in my word then are ye my disciples indeed 32 And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free 33 ¶ They answered him We be Abrahams seed and were never in bondage to any man how sayest thou Ye shall be made free 34 Jesu answered them Verily verily I say unto you * Rom. 6.20 1 Pet. 2.19 Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever but the Son abideth ever 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free ye shall be free indeed 37 I know that ye are Abrahams seed but ye seek to kill me because my word hath no place in you 38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father and ye do that which ye have seen with your father 39 They answered and said unto him Abraham is our father Jesus saith unto them If ye were Abrahams children ye would do the works of Abraham 40 But now ye seek to kill me a man that hath told you the truth which I have heard of God this did not Abraham 41 Ye do the deeds of your father Then said they to him We be not born of fornication we have one Father even God 42 Jesus said unto them If God were your Father ye would love me for I proceeded forth and came from God neither came I of my self but he sent me 43 Why do ye not understand my speech even because ye cannot hear my word 44 * 1 John 3.8 Ye are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father ye will do he was a murderer from the beginning and abode not in the truth because there is no truth in him When he speaketh a lie he speaketh of his own for he is a liar and the father of it 45 And because I tell you the truth ye beleeve me not 46 Which of you convinceth me of sin And if I say the truth why do ye not beleeve me 47 * 1 John 4.6 He that is of God heareth Gods words ye therefore hear them not because ye are not of God 48 Then answered the Jews and said unto him Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan and hast a devil 49 Jesus answered I have not a devil but I honour my Father and ye do dishonour me 50 And I seek not mine own glory there is one that seeketh judgeth 51 Verily verily I say unto you If a man keep my saying he shall never see death 52 Then said the Jews unto him Now we know that thou hast a devil Abraham is dead and the prophets and thou sayest If a man keep my saying he shall never taste of death 53 Art thou greater then our father Abraham which is dead and the prophets are dead whom makest thou thy self 54 Jesus answered If I honour my self my honour is nothing it is my Father that honoureth me of whom ye say that he is your God 55 Yet ye have not known him but I know him and if I should say I know him not I shall be a liar like unto you but I know him and keep his saying 56 Your father Abraham rejoyced to see my day and he saw it and was glad 57 Then said the Jews unto him Thou art not yet fifty years old and hast thou seen Abraham 58 Jesus said unto them Verily verily I say unto you Before Abraham was I am 59 Then took they up stones to cast at him but Jesus hid himself went out of the temple going through the midst of them so passed by CHAP. IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. He went his way therefore and washed and came seeing 8 ¶ The neighbours therefore and they which before had seen him that he was blinde said Is not this he that sat and begged 9 Some said This is he others said He is like him but he said I am he 10 Therefore said they unto him How were thine eyes opened 11 He answered and said A man that is called Jesus made clay and anointed mine eyes and said unto me Go to the pool of Siloam and wash and I went and washed and I received sight 12 Then said they unto him Where is he He said I know not 13 ¶ They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blinde 14 And it was the sabbath-day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes 15 Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight He said unto them He put clay upon mine eyes and I washed and do see 16 Therefore said some of the Pharisees This man is not of God because he keepeth not the sabbath-day Others said How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles And there was a division among them 17 They say unto the blinde man again What sayest thou of him
it be known what is spoken for ye shall speak into the air 10 There are it may be so many kinds of voices in the world and none of them is without signification 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me 12 Even so ye forasmuch as ye are zealous †Gr. of spirits of spiritual gifts seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue my spirit prayeth but my understanding is unfruitful 15 What is it then I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest 17 For thou verily givest thanks well but the other is not edified 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more then you all 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding that by my voice I might teach others also then ten thousand words in an unknown tongue 20 Brethren be not children in understanding howbeit in malice * Matth. 18.3 be ye children but in understanding be †Gr. perfect or of a ripe age men 21 In the law it is * Isa 28.11 written With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people and yet for all that will they not hear me saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a signe not to them that beleeve but to them that beleeve not but prophesying serveth not for them that beleeve not but for them which beleeve 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place and all speak with tongues there come in those that are unlearned or unbeleevers will they not say that ye are mad 24 But if all prophesie and there come in one that beleeveth not or one unlearned he is convinced of all he is judged of all 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest and so falling down on his face he will worship God and report that God is in you of a truth 26 How is it then brethren when ye come together every one of you hath a psalm hath a doctrine hath a tongue hath a revelation hath an interpretation Let all things be done to edifying 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue let it be by two or at the most by three and that by course and let one interpret 28 But if there be no interpreter let him keep silence in the church and let him speak to himself and to God 29 Let the prophets speak two or three and let the other judge 30 If any thing be revealed to another that fitteth by let the first hold his peace 31 For ye may all prophesie one by one that all may learn and all may be comforted 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets 33 For God is not the authour of †Gr. tumult or unquietness confusion but of peace as in all churches of the saints 34 * 1 Tim. 2.12 Let your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the * Gen. 3.16 law 35 And if they will learn any thing let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for women to speak in the church 36 What came the word of God out from you or came it unto you onely 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant let him be ignorant 39 Wherefore brethren covet to prophesie and forbid not to speak with tongues 40 Let all things be done decently and in order CHAP. XV. 3 By Christs resurrection 12 he proveth the necessity of our resurrection against all such as deny the resurrection of the body 21 The fruit 35 and manner thereof 51 and of the changing of them that shall be found alive at the last day MOreover brethren I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you which also you have received and wherein ye stand 2 By which also ye are saved if ye ‖ Or bold fast keep in memory †Gr. by what speech what I preached unto you unless ye have beleeved in vain 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for our sins * Isa 53.5 6 c. according to the scriptures 4 And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day * Psal 16.10 according to the scriptures 5 * John 20.19 And that he was seen of Cephas then of the twelve 6 After that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once of whom the greater part remain unto this present but some are faln asleep 7 After that he was seen of James then of all the apostles 8 * Acts 9.4 Chap. 9.1 And last of all he was seen of me also as of ‖ Or an â—â—ortive one born out of due time 9 For I am the least of the apostles that am not meet to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain but I laboured more abundantly then they all yet not I but the grace of God which was with me 11 Therefore whether it were I or they so we preach and so ye beleeved 12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead then is Christ not risen 14 And if Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain and your faith is also vain 15 Yea and we are found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ whom he raised not up if so he that the dead rise not 16 For if the dead rise not then is not Christ raised 17 And if Christ be not raised your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins 18 Then they also which are faln asleep in Christ are perished 19 If in this life onely we have hope in Christ we are of all men most miserable 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead and become * Col. 1.28 Rev. 1.5 the first-fruits of them that slept 21 For since by man came death by man came also the
justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. The just shall live by faith 12 And the law is not of faith but * Lev. 18.5 the man that doeth them shall live in them 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written * Deu. 21.23 Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith 15 Brethren I speak after the manner of men Though it be but a mans ‖ Or testament covenant yet if it be confirmed no man disanulleth or addeth thereto 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made He saith not And to seeds as of many but as of one And to thy seed which is Christ 17 And this I say that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disanul that it should make the promise of none effect 18 For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise but God gave it to Abraham by promise 19 Wherefore then serveth the law It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediatour 20 Now a mediatour is not a mediatour of one but God is one 21 Is the law then against the promises of God God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life verily righteousness should have been by the law 22 But the scripture hath concluded * Rom. 3.9 all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that beleeve 23 But before faith came we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed 24 Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a school-master 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus 27 For * Rom. 6. ◠as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus 29 And if ye be Christs then are ye Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise CHAP. be blameless the husband of one wife vigilant sober ‖ Or modest of good behaviour given to hospitality apt to teach 3 ‖ Or Not ready to quarrel and offer wrong as one in wine Not given to wine no striker not greedy of filthy lucre but patient not a brawler not covetous 4 One that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity 5 For if a man know not how to rule his own house how shall he take care of the church of God 6 Not I a novice lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave not double-tongued not given to much wine not greedy of filthy lucre 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience 10 And let these also first be proved then let them use the office of a deacon being found blameless 11 Even to must their wives be grave not slanderers sober faithful in all things 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife ruling their children and their own houses well 13 For they that have ‖ Or ministreâ—â— used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus 14 These things write I unto thee hoping to come unto thee shortly 15 But if I tarry long that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God which is the church of the living God the pillar and ‖ Or stay ground of the truth 16 And without controversie great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh justified in the Spirit seen of angels preached unto the Gentiles beleeved on in the world received up into glory CHAP. IV. 1 He foretelleth that in the latter times there shall be a departure from the faith 6 And to the end that Timothy might not fail in doing his duty be furnisheth him with divers precepts belonging thereto NOw the Spirit speaketh expresly that * 2 Tim. 3.1 in the latter times some shall depart from the saith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisie having their conscience seared with a hot iron 3 Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which beleeve and know the truth 4 For every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine whereunto thou hast attained 7 But refuse profane and old wives fables and exercise thy self rather unto godliness 8 For bodily exercise profiteth ‖ Or for a little time little but godliness is profitable unto all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God who is the Saviour of all men specially of those that beleeve 11 These things command and teach 12 Let no man despise thy youth but be thou an example of the beleevers in word in conversation in charity in spirit in faith in purity 13 Till I come give attendance to reading to exhortation to doctrine 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee which was given thee by prophesie with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery 15 Meditate upon these things give thy self wholly to them that thy profiting may appear ‖ Or in all things to all 16 Take heed unto thy self and unto thy doctrine continue in them for in doing this thou shalt both save thy self and them that hear thee CHAP. V. 1 Rules to be observed in reproving 3 Of widows 17 Of elders 23 A precept for Timothies health 24 Some mens sins go before unto judgement and some mens do follow after REbuke not an elder but intreat him as a father and the younger men as brethren 2 The elder women as mothers the younger as sisters with all purity 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed 4 But if any widow have children or nephews let them learn first to shew ‖ Or kindness piety at home and to requite their parents for that is good and acceptable before God 5 Now she that is a widow indeed and desolate trusteth in God and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day 6 But she that liveth ‖ Or delicately in pleasure is dead while she liveth 7 And these things give in charge that they may be blameless 8 But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own ‖ Or kindred house he hath denied the faith and is worse then an infidel 9 Let not a widow be ‖ Or chosen taken into the number under threescore years old having been the wife of one man 10 Well reported of for good works if she have brought up children if she have lodged strangers if she have washed the saints feet if she have relieved the afflicted if she have diligently followed every good work 11 But the younger widows refuse for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ they will marry 12 Having damnation because they have cast off their first faith 13 And withal they learn to be idle wandring about from house to house and not onely idle but tattlers also and busie-bodies speaking things which they ought not 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry bear children guide the house give none occasion to the adversary †Gr. for their railing to speak reproachfully 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan 16 If any man or woman that beleeveth have widows let them relieve them and let not the church be charged that it may relieve them that are widows indeed 17 * 1 Cor. 9 14. devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
