people_n take_v in_o error_n than_o their_o harbour_v of_o unmortified_a lusts._n so_o in_o 2_o timoth_n cap._n 3._o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o those_o who_o shall_v be_v carry_v away_o with_o mind_n with_o they_o so_o say_v i_o you_o will_v guard_v yourself_o against_o the_o fair_a pretence_n which_o error_n may_v have_v and_o look_v not_o only_o to_o the_o out_o side_n but_o to_o the_o inside_n of_o they_o and_o then_o you_o will_v find_v most_o bitter_a serpent_n lurk_v under_o fair_a flower_n as_o for_o example_n the_o mother_n of_o all_o error_n toleration_n have_v a_o fair_a pretence_n for_o it_o viz._n that_o good_a man_n may_v err_v and_o so_o in_o suppress_v error_n you_o may_v suppress_v piety_n a_o fair_a pretence_n but_o it_o have_v afoul_a end_n for_o by_o this_o wonderful_a that_o god_n shall_v desire_v or_o delight_n in_o truth_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n or_o that_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v in_o we_o or_o proceed_v from_o we_o shall_v be_v lovely_a to_o he_o there_o be_v such_o a_o mixture_n of_o unlovely_a sinful_a dross_n in_o every_o thing_n of_o that_o sort_n but_o we_o think_v it_o do_v rather_o serve_v here_o as_o often_o elsewhere_o for_o a_o note_n of_o attention_n only_o take_v it_o so_o you_o must_v consider_v that_o david_n design_n and_o aim_v hereby_o be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o stir_v up_o god_n as_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o the_o but_o his_o conscience_n will_v challenge_v he_o if_o he_o stay_v aback_o but_o as_o to_o the_o qualification_n of_o the_o call_v and_o what_o be_v require_v of_o you_o for_o come_v acceptable_o it_o be_v a_o wonder_n to_o see_v with_o what_o a_o careless_a ear_n the_o most_o part_n do_v hear_v any_o thing_n of_o that_o sort_n as_o if_o the_o communion_n be_v a_o charm_n to_o work_v upon_o people_n whether_o they_o be_v fit_v to_o receive_v it_o or_o not_o so_o that_o sermon_n for_o preparation_n do_v serve_v as_o to_o many_o for_o no_o other_o use_n but_o for_o a_o customary_a ceremony_n and_o to_o fill_v up_o so_o much_o time_n these_o necessary_a direction_n which_o be_v give_v you_o to_o come_v in_o the_o right_a manner_n and_o the_o warning_n you_o get_v tell_v you_o how_o dreadful_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v to_o come_v wrong_a be_v mind_v no_o long_o by_o the_o most_o part_n than_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o hear_v they_o and_o by_o some_o scarce_o so_o long_o hence_o certain_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o so_o familiar_a with_o the_o heart_n of_o people_n at_o his_o own_o feast_n as_o sometime_o he_o have_v be_v it_o be_v no_o wonder_n because_o we_o come_v not_o as_o prepare_v guest_n with_o a_o wedding_n garment_n to_o meet_v with_o he_o yea_o doubtless_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v threaten_v so_o hard_o to_o draw_v his_o table_n and_o to_o suffer_v man_n to_o impose_v upon_o we_o a_o dead_a lifeless_a formal_a way_n of_o worship_n that_o therein_o we_o may_v see_v the_o copy_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n who_o if_o they_o get_v the_o outward_a form_n go_v about_o they_o care_v little_a for_o the_o inward_a life_n power_n and_o substance_n and_o sure_o if_o ever_o it_o come_v to_o this_o as_o god_n know_v how_o soon_o it_o may_v that_o all_o our_o religion_n shall_v consist_v in_o threadbare_a impose_v form_n and_o that_o more_o pain_n be_v take_v by_o minister_n to_o press_v upon_o people_n the_o observance_n of_o these_o form_n than_o the_o very_a life_n and_o substance_n of_o religious_a performance_n we_o must_v justify_v the_o lord_n in_o it_o for_o that_o be_v the_o very_a copy_n of_o our_o formal_a heart_n our_o love_n to_o and_o rest_v on_o formality_n may_v provoke_v the_o lord_n to_o wreathe_v the_o yoke_n of_o a_o dead_a lifeless_a and_o formal_a service_n on_o our_o neck_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o shake_v it_o off_o though_o we_o will_v the_o lord_n ofttimes_o shape_v out_o cross_a dispensation_n in_o the_o public_a according_a to_o these_o sinful_a distemper_n which_o be_v common_a and_o prevalent_a in_o the_o heart_n of_o people_n that_o therein_o they_o may_v see_v the_o unlovely_a representation_n and_o idea_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n jer_n 5._o 31._o he_o will_v suffer_v even_o the_o prophet_n to_o prophesy_v false_o and_o the_o priest_n to_o bear_v rule_n by_o their_o mean_n if_o his_o people_n love_n to_o have_v it_o so_o but_o second_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o your_o dulness_n and_o averseness_n to_o hear_v what_o be_v the_o lord_n mind_n concern_v the_o right_a and_o acceptable_a manner_n of_o go_v about_o command_v duty_n shall_v make_v you_o so_o much_o the_o more_o to_o stir_v up_o yourselves_o to_o give_v diligent_a heed_n unto_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v speak_v to_o that_o purpose_n for_o truth_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n it_o be_v true_a not_o only_o what_o you_o hear_v from_o the_o former_a note_n but_o your_o own_o experience_n at_o such_o
time_n do_v show_v your_o heart_n be_v woeful_o backward_o to_o hear_v and_o lay_v to_o heart_n any_o thing_n that_o be_v speak_v to_o this_o purpose_n but_o see_v the_o thing_n be_v needful_a and_o so_o needful_a as_o that_o all_o your_o other_o pain_n without_o come_v up_o to_o what_o you_o hear_v to_o this_o purpose_n will_v be_v to_o no_o good_a purpose_n therefore_o you_o ought_v to_o bestir_v yourselves_o strive_v in_o earnest_n against_o your_o own_o backwardness_n and_o if_o you_o serious_o set_v yourselves_o to_o strive_v against_o it_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o you_o will_v get_v it_o overcome_v at_o least_o in_o part_n this_o much_o for_o the_o note_n of_o attention_n behold_v i_o come_v next_o to_o that_o which_o be_v subjoin_v to_o this_o behold_v viz._n the_o lord_n complacency_n and_o delight_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o sincerity_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o it_o as_o that_o without_o which_o david_n present_a address_n can_v not_o be_v savory_n or_o acceptable_a to_o god_n thou_o desire_v truth_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n we_o will_v find_v three_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n for_o clear_v what_o it_o be_v which_o make_v our_o performance_n accept_v of_o god_n 1._o in_o general_n it_o be_v somewhat_o which_o god_n desire_v approve_v or_o love_n thou_o desire_v etc._n etc._n 2._o it_o be_v somewhat_o in_o the_o inward_a part_n not_o so_o much_o that_o which_o be_v external_n and_o see_v by_o man_n as_o what_o be_v internal_a and_o know_v only_o to_o god_n and_o the_o man_n be_v own_o self_n 3._o one_o main_a particular_a hereof_o be_v condescend_v on_o to_o wit_n truth_n the_o grace_n of_o sincerity_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o that_o grace_n thou_o desire_v truth_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n of_o all_o which_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v so_o to_o speak_v as_o that_o therein_o you_o may_v see_v both_o your_o bypast_a fail_n for_o your_o humiliation_n and_o also_o may_v see_v a_o rule_n to_o which_o you_o ought_v to_o conform_v yourselves_o
