truth_n i_o will_v only_o express_v it_o thus_o if_o christ_n suffer_v all_o the_o plague_n which_o divine_a justice_n require_v then_o there_o be_v neither_o the_o punishment_n of_o hell_n nor_o purgatory_n to_o be_v suffer_v by_o the_o faithful_a but_o our_o saviour_n suffer_v whatsoever_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n require_v and_o therefore_o neither_o sin_n nor_o hell_n nor_o purgatory_n have_v any_o thing_n to_o lay_v to_o the_o charge_n of_o god_n choose_v second_o it_o not_o only_o meet_v with_o they_o but_o it_o dash_v in_o sunder_o another_o conceit_n that_o seem_v to_o find_v acceptance_n with_o other_o for_o hence_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o all_o the_o trouble_n and_o misery_n and_o affliction_n either_o anguish_n of_o heart_n inward_o or_o misery_n outward_o they_o can_v proper_o be_v call_v punishment_n inflict_v upon_o the_o faithful_a be_v they_o never_o so_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a in_o themselves_o be_v lay_v upon_o the_o faithful_a they_o lose_v that_o property_n and_o they_o become_v correction_n christ_n have_v suffer_v all_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o god_n the_o father_n will_v not_o require_v a_o double_a payment_n for_o one_o debt_n and_o therefore_o howsoever_o their_o grievance_n be_v many_o and_o great_a yet_o they_o be_v but_o chasticement_n at_o the_o worst_a and_o they_o lose_v that_o venom_n of_o plague_n and_o of_o punishment_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sea_n water_n it_o be_v salt_n of_o itself_o and_o have_v a_o brinish_a saltness_n fret_v wonderful_o yet_o when_o it_o pass_v through_o the_o vein_n of_o the_o earth_n all_o the_o saltness_n be_v go_v and_o it_o become_v fresh_a and_o be_v of_o a_o cool_a nature_n just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o affliction_n that_o be_v sometime_o inflict_v upon_o the_o godly_a howsoever_o in_o themselves_o they_o be_v sharp_a and_o brinish_a and_o fret_v yet_o the_o heavy_a affliction_n though_o never_o so_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a yet_o when_o they_o pass_v through_o the_o merit_n and_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n they_o retain_v only_o their_o cool_n cleanse_a and_o refresh_a nature_n object_n but_o some_o will_v say_v do_v not_o these_o thing_n befall_v alike_o to_o all_o as_o david_n say_v psalm_n 88.15_o thy_o terror_n have_v i_o suffer_v from_o my_o youth_n upward_o do_v not_o these_o thing_n come_v alike_o to_o all_o the_o same_o poverty_n the_o same_o misery_n the_o same_o anguish_n of_o heart_n do_v not_o these_o fall_n alike_o to_o all_o as_o in_o 1_o chron._n 21.12_o 13_o 14._o be_v there_o not_o much_o misery_n befall_v david_n and_o do_v not_o the_o same_o plague_n that_o befall_v the_o one_o befall_v the_o other_o the_o holy_a man_n and_o the_o profane_v man_n partake_v alike_o in_o these_o wherein_o lie_v the_o difference_n then_o answer_n i_o answer_v the_o difference_n lie_v in_o two_o particular_n first_o the_o judgement_n that_o be_v lay_v on_o the_o wicked_a they_o come_v from_o god_n anger_n and_o god_n require_v they_o in_o way_n of_o satisfaction_n unto_o divine_a justice_n but_o all_o the_o correction_n and_o chastisement_n and_o terror_n and_o trouble_n that_o befall_v the_o godly_a they_o come_v from_o god_n love_n and_o from_o his_o fatherly_a care_n a_o physician_n cut_v a_o man_n and_o a_o enemy_n stab_v a_o man_n the_o knife_n be_v all_o alike_o but_o to_o the_o one_o it_o come_v from_o a_o friend_n and_o to_o the_o other_o it_o come_v from_o a_o enemy_n so_o god_n do_v send_v affliction_n to_o the_o godly_a and_o to_o he_o they_o come_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o father_n and_o to_o the_o other_o they_o come_v as_o from_o a_o judge_n there_o be_v no_o judgement_n be_v send_v upon_o the_o wicked_a but_o they_o come_v in_o part_n of_o satisfaction_n and_o divine_a justice_n faith_n thou_o must_v to_o hell_n for_o all_o those_o sin_n of_o thou_o and_o i_o will_v have_v something_o in_o part_n of_o payment_n before_o thou_o come_v there_o but_o to_o the_o godly_a the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v satisfy_v to_o the_o full_a and_o the_o debt_n be_v full_o pay_v and_o therefore_o god_n never_o lay_v any_o thing_n upon_o the_o saint_n so_o much_o to_o satisfy_v divine_a justice_n as_o to_o correct_v and_o amend_v they_o second_o all_o the_o punishment_n and_o correction_n that_o come_v upon_o the_o godly_a the_o lord_n so_o order_n and_o temper_n and_o sweeten_v they_o by_o his_o save_a grace_n and_o by_o the_o work_n of_o his_o spirit_n that_o they_o all_o work_n and_o turn_v to_o their_o good_a the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v so_o far_o shed_v abroad_o into_o their_o heart_n by_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n merit_n and_o so_o show_v therein_o that_o they_o procure_v good_a and_o comfort_n to_o their_o soul_n for_o ever_o but_o in_o the_o punishment_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o wicked_a they_o come_v from_o under_o the_o cross_n more_o harden_v and_o more_o blind_v and_o more_o fierce_a and_o rebellious_a against_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n but_o the_o godly_a come_v from_o under_o the_o cross_n more_o holy_a and_o more_o meek_a and_o more_o patient_a and_o reform_v in_o their_o life_n and_o conversation_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o poison_n that_o be_v take_v in_o hand_n by_o a_o skilful_a physician_n he_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o know_v how_o to_o correct_v it_o and_o to_o take_v away_o the_o malignant_a quality_n of_o it_o either_o of_o the_o cold_a or_o of_o the_o heat_n so_o affliction_n of_o themselves_o be_v plague_n and_o judgement_n and_o they_o be_v able_a to_o harden_v the_o heart_n and_o to_o blind_v the_o mind_n this_o be_v that_o ahaz_n say_v the_o text_n even_o wicked_a ahaz_n this_o be_v the_o punishment_n and_o poison_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o it_o bring_v punishment_n upon_o they_o it_o blind_v their_o mind_n and_o harden_v their_o heart_n and_o therefore_o whensoever_o a_o wicked_a man_n do_v come_v forth_o from_o under_o the_o curse_n he_o be_v far_o worse_a than_o he_o be_v before_o his_o heart_n more_o dead_a and_o more_o fierce_a and_o he_o walk_v more_o rebellious_o against_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n but_o when_o they_o be_v lay_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o god_n the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n take_v away_o the_o malignant_a quality_n of_o they_o and_o all_o the_o poison_n of_o punishment_n and_o poverty_n and_o take_v away_o all_o the_o venom_n of_o sickness_n and_o disgrace_n and_o it_o be_v now_o a_o preservative_n and_o it_o be_v good_a to_o be_v afflict_v as_o david_n say_v and_o to_o have_v the_o poison_n thus_o correct_v and_o to_o humble_v he_o and_o to_o purge_v he_o and_o to_o do_v he_o good_a in_o his_o latter_a end_n they_o be_v the_o same_o in_o nature_n that_o they_o be_v unto_o the_o wicked_a but_o the_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o quality_n of_o they_o therefore_o the_o conclusion_n be_v thus_o much_o that_o all_o affliction_n come_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o love_a father_n upon_o the_o godly_a and_o though_o they_o come_v in_o anger_n to_o their_o sin_n yet_o they_o work_v for_o their_o good_a and_o salvation_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o point_n of_o speculation_n and_o for_o the_o information_n of_o the_o judgement_n now_o let_v we_o come_v home_o to_o the_o affection_n and_o cheer_v up_o our_o heart_n a_o little_a in_o the_o application_n of_o the_o point_n use_v 2_o in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o be_v a_o word_n of_o comfort_n to_o all_o you_o that_o be_v believer_n you_o that_o have_v hear_v the_o treasure_n of_o mercy_n and_o the_o death_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n lay_v open_a view_v they_o &_o take_v they_o all_o to_o yourselves_o for_o your_o comfort_n be_v your_o heartâ—_n persuade_v that_o jesus_n christ_n suffer_v all_o the_o punishment_n and_o drink_v off_o all_o the_o cup_n and_o have_v leave_v none_o for_o you_o then_o i_o think_v this_o may_v make_v you_o go_v away_o cheer_v there_o be_v no_o death_n no_o hell_n no_o divine_a justice_n for_o you_o to_o undergo_v go_v your_o way_n cheer_v and_o so_o you_o may_v for_o you_o be_v deliver_v from_o wrath_n hell_n and_o punishment_n this_o be_v a_o incomparable_a cheer_v of_o soul_n to_o all_o the_o faithful_a of_o god_n be_v their_o condition_n never_o so_o mean_a and_o their_o estate_n never_o so_o low_a come_v all_o hither_o and_o take_v that_o grace_n and_o mercy_n that_o be_v purchase_v and_o offer_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n object_n but_o i_o think_v i_o hear_v some_o begin_v to_o cavil_n against_o this_o truth_n and_o say_v let_v they_o take_v mercy_n that_o have_v a_o right_a to_o it_o and_o thank_v god_n for_o it_o those_o that_o
have_v a_o title_n to_o it_o and_o that_o have_v great_a part_n and_o ability_n and_o answerable_a obedience_n let_v those_o take_v it_o and_o bless_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o see_v the_o day_n but_o what_o i_o have_v i_o any_o share_n in_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o what_o do_v christ_n suffer_v the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n for_o i_o my_o sin_n so_o many_o and_o my_o condition_n so_o bad_a and_o i_o can_v tell_v whether_o i_o have_v any_o faith_n or_o no_o it_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o feeble_a be_v all_o punishment_n remove_v i_o can_v think_v it_o this_o be_v your_o own_o fault_n for_o this_o mercy_n be_v for_o thou_o for_o every_o faithful_a believe_a soul_n be_v his_o estate_n never_o so_o low_a be_v thy_o say_v never_o so_o weak_a have_v thou_o faith_n but_o as_o a_o grain_n of_o mustard_n seed_n that_o thou_o can_v scarce_o know_v whether_o thou_o have_v faith_n or_o no_o yet_o if_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n there_o be_v grace_n and_o mercy_n enough_o for_o thou_o in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n therefore_o come_v and_o draw_v the_o water_n of_o life_n and_o comfort_n out_o of_o the_o well_n of_o salvation_n that_o be_v out_o of_o the_o suffering_n and_o obedience_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n you_o have_v hear_v that_o the_o heart_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v amaze_v and_o astonish_v it_o be_v for_o thou_o therefore_o be_v thou_o cheer_v christ_n suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o the_o father_n and_o come_v from_o under_o it_o and_o that_o be_v thy_o victory_n be_v thou_o for_o ever_o cheer_v our_o saviour_n be_v imprison_v that_o thou_o may_v be_v deliver_v he_o be_v accuse_v that_o thou_o may_v be_v acquit_v he_o be_v condemn_v and_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n to_o thy_o soul_n he_o suffer_v death_n that_o thou_o may_v live_v for_o evermore_o therefore_o go_v your_o way_n and_o go_v cheary_o and_o the_o god_n of_o heaven_n go_v with_o you_o fear_v not_o any_o punishment_n now_o for_o why_o shall_v you_o fear_v they_o when_o you_o shall_v not_o feel_v they_o you_o may_v here_o have_v a_o ground_n of_o double_a comfort_n in_o the_o time_n of_o thy_o great_a distress_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o horror_n of_o heart_n within_o or_o trouble_v without_o in_o both_o these_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n will_v pity_v you_o and_o will_v rescue_v you_o from_o all_o in_o his_o own_o season_n therefore_o lift_v up_o your_o head_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o trouble_n whatsoever_o first_o in_o all_o outward_a trouble_n and_o in_o the_o heavy_a trial_n thou_o shall_v be_v pity_v in_o they_o though_o christ_n be_v go_v up_o to_o heaven_n yet_o he_o have_v his_o bowel_n of_o pity_n and_o of_o mercy_n with_o he_o and_o his_o bowel_n of_o mercy_n in_o heaven_n earn_v over_o a_o poor_a dismay_a creature_n that_o be_v dismay_v either_o because_o of_o thy_o sin_n or_o because_o of_o those_o punishment_n which_o thou_o fear_v for_o sin_n hebrew_n 4.15_o we_o have_v not_o a_o high_a priest_n that_o can_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n but_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n tempt_v in_o like_a sort_n we_o have_v not_o a_o high_a priest_n that_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o cross_n and_o trouble_n neither_o have_v we_o a_o high_a priest_n like_o gallio_n that_o care_v nothing_o for_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v he_o be_v not_o trouble_v with_o the_o persecution_n of_o other_o as_o their_o cup_n be_v full_a and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v with_o the_o poverty_n of_o other_o they_o be_v at_o rest_n and_o ease_n and_o they_o be_v not_o trouble_v with_o those_o that_o be_v in_o misery_n but_o he_o be_v tempt_v in_o all_o thing_n like_v unto_o we_o and_o so_o hebrew_n 2.13_o wherefore_o in_o all_o thing_n it_o behove_v he_o to_o be_v make_v like_o unto_o his_o brethren_n that_o he_o may_v be_v merciful_a and_o a_o faithful_a high_a priest_n because_o he_o suffer_v and_o be_v tempt_v he_o be_v also_o able_a to_o succour_v those_o that_o be_v tempt_v when_o the_o poor_a do_v cry_v oh_o pity_n and_o compassion_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n oh_o you_o know_v not_o what_o belong_v to_o a_o hungry_a belly_n nor_o to_o a_o naked_a back_n so_o i_o say_v you_o know_v not_o what_o it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o distress_a conscience_n and_o therefore_o you_o have_v no_o remorse_n to_o they_o that_o be_v such_o but_o you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o christ_n be_v not_o touch_v with_o our_o infirmity_n though_o he_o sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o father_n yet_o he_o have_v not_o forget_v his_o people_n but_o he_o have_v leave_v his_o love_n and_o his_o compassion_n with_o we_o and_o he_o be_v touch_v when_o we_o be_v trouble_v paul_n persecute_v the_o church_n and_o christ_n say_v saul_n saul_n why_o persecute_v thou_o i_o the_o foot_n be_v prick_v in_o earth_n and_o the_o head_n complain_v of_o it_o in_o heaven_n he_o feel_v the_o rage_n and_o malice_n of_o paul_n persecution_n though_o haply_o poor_a goodman_n such_o a_o one_o and_o poor_a goody_n such_o a_o one_o be_v persecute_v yet_o our_o saviour_n be_v touch_v and_o trouble_v with_o it_o therefore_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o how_o to_o succour_v yourselves_o when_o you_o find_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n lie_v heavy_a upon_o you_o and_o the_o anguish_n of_o soul_n lie_v sore_o upon_o you_o i_o may_v also_o speak_v of_o the_o rage_n and_o malice_n of_o the_o wicked_a but_o when_o the_o arrow_n of_o god_n wrath_n seize_v upon_o the_o soul_n and_o god_n seem_v to_o be_v displease_v and_o to_o go_v away_o from_o the_o soul_n and_o mercy_n and_o love_n and_o the_o sweetness_n of_o he_o have_v do_v these_o be_v trouble_n indeed_o now_o learn_v you_o to_o look_v up_o to_o christ_n and_o look_v to_o be_v pity_v by_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n it_o may_v be_v thy_o husband_n or_o thy_o wife_n or_o thy_o friend_n will_v not_o pity_v thou_o but_o will_v say_v he_o be_v turn_v a_o precise_a fellow_n and_o see_v now_o what_o good_a he_o have_v get_v by_o run_v to_o sermon_n thus_o they_o add_v sorrow_n to_o sorrow_n and_o persecution_n to_o persecution_n because_o god_n have_v smite_v thou_o therefore_o they_o smite_v thou_o too_o but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o look_v thou_o up_o to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o know_v that_o thou_o shall_v find_v favour_n he_o will_v have_v a_o fellow-feeling_n with_o thou_o in_o all_o thy_o misery_n and_o know_v how_o to_o deliver_v such_o as_o be_v tempt_v he_o that_o bear_v up_o the_o frame_n of_o the_o heaven_n and_o never_o groan_v under_o the_o pillar_n of_o the_o earth_n yet_o when_o he_o be_v to_o bear_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o shrink_v at_o it_o and_o say_v father_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a let_v this_o cup_n pass_v from_o i_o he_o that_o bear_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o thou_o he_o will_v certain_o pity_v thou_o second_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v pity_v in_o outward_a sorrow_n only_o but_o go_v your_o way_n for_o ever_o cheer_v you_o shall_v be_v free_a from_o all_o will_v be_v clamour_v up_o to_o heaven_n against_o you_o and_o complain_v of_o you_o at_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n do_v you_o fear_v they_o so_o you_o may_v just_o because_o of_o that_o secret_a slide_n off_o from_o the_o truth_n oh_o say_v thou_o my_o errand_n be_v do_v in_o heaven_n before_o this_o time_n and_o my_o sin_n knock_v at_o heaven_n gate_n and_o say_v justice_z lord_z i_o have_v take_v they_o in_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o thou_o be_v a_o god_n of_o justice_n execute_v justice_n upon_o a_o rebellious_a soul_n now_o therefore_o remember_v that_o jesus_n christ_n have_v suffer_v he_o have_v take_v thy_o sin_n upon_o he_o and_o have_v suffer_v the_o punishment_n of_o they_o 1_o john_n 2.1_o little_a child_n sin_v not_o at_o all_o it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v always_o humble_a and_o poor_a in_o spirit_n and_o do_v all_o good_a against_o the_o evil_n do_v to_o he_o and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v that_o a_o man_n can_v walk_v exact_o before_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a so_o long_o as_o we_o have_v this_o body_n of_o death_n it_o will_v show_v itself_o but_o if_o we_o do_v sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o just_a he_o be_v go_v to_o heaven_n to_o tell_v the_o father_n that_o all_o be_v full_o answer_v and_o he_o say_v father_n save_o all_o those_o poor_a soul_n who_o thou_o have_v give_v i_o i_o have_v pay_v all_o and_o answer_v all_o for_o they_o and_o therefore_o father_n i_o will_v that_o all_o that_o thou_o have_v give_v i_o may_v be_v with_o i_o where_o i_o be_o that_o they_o may_v behold_v my_o glory_n thus_o he_o plead_v for_o he_o do_v not_o plead_v as_o we_o do_v but_o he_o say_v father_n i_o will_v now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o cry_n against_o the_o soul_n by_o reason_n of_o sin_n christ_n stop_v it_o sin_n plead_v and_o christ_n plead_v and_o who_o will_v prevail_v think_v you_o therefore_o be_v not_o discourage_v we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n the_o sin_n of_o your_o dream_n this_o last_o night_n they_o have_v do_v your_o errand_n in_o heaven_n before_o you_o do_v awake_a but_o let_v they_o plead_v what_o they_o can_v we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o plead_v our_o cause_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o will_v prevail_v in_o whatsoever_o he_o plead_v for_o he_o will_v
