abuse_n of_o the_o sabbath_n than_o affirm_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o man_n do_v surmise_v to_o these_o former_a reason_n we_o may_v add_v that_o which_o be_v matth._n 24._o 20._o pray_o whether_o they_o contain_v any_o sound_a truth_n for_o their_o purpose_n howsoever_o they_o be_v think_v to_o have_v some_o hold_n in_o show_n these_o allegation_n be_v either_o out_o of_o the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n or_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrews_n out_o of_o the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n which_o he_o write_v to_o the_o roman_n to_o the_o galatian_n or_o to_o the_o colossian_n the_o think_v nothing_o worthy_a to_o be_v know_v or_o covet_v no_o knowledge_n as_o excellent_a in_o respect_n and_o in_o comparison_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o he_o crucify_v and_o therefore_o whereas_o there_o be_v some_o among_o the_o corinthian_n a_o people_n very_o famous_a for_o their_o learning_n and_o knowledge_n who_o please_v themselves_o in_o a_o conceit_n of_o their_o great_a gift_n and_o science_n the_o apostle_n not_o want_v these_o thing_n protest_v unto_o they_o that_o he_o never_o make_v this_o humane_a knowledge_n the_o full_a scope_n drift_n and_o foundation_n of_o his_o labour_n and_o that_o he_o never_o use_v they_o as_o the_o treasure_n of_o his_o heart_n although_o he_o can_v tell_v how_o far_o to_o give_v they_o their_o reverence_n their_o man_n be_v not_o so_o much_o overwise_a and_o benumb_a in_o judgement_n in_o this_o behalf_n but_o most_o man_n on_o the_o contrary_a rejoice_n either_o as_o much_o or_o more_o in_o these_o thing_n than_o in_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o evil_a wherewith_o most_o man_n have_v surfeit_v this_o be_v the_o evil_a whereat_o the_o apostle_n strike_v for_o though_o man_n will_v grant_v that_o christ_n be_v to_o be_v rejoice_v in_o yet_o their_o work_n do_v show_v that_o they_o rejoice_v in_o some_o thing_n more_o than_o in_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n and_o if_o they_o show_v any_o joy_n to_o religion_n it_o be_v rather_o do_v to_o countenance_v their_o own_o gift_n than_o to_o gain_v any_o credit_n to_o christ._n how_o many_o i_o pray_v you_o in_o our_o day_n manifest_o as_o covetousness_n &_o ambition_n creep_v under_o the_o cloak_n of_o virtue_n plead_v for_o ability_n and_o maintenance_n for_o place_n and_o countenance_n without_o which_o as_o they_o say_v a_o man_n can_v do_v good_a but_o these_o man_n that_o thus_o labour_v more_o for_o promotion_n profit_n and_o pleasure_n than_o to_o find_v christ_n crucify_v and_o can_v find_v the_o uncomparable_a joy_n if_o they_o be_v new_a creature_n may_v happy_o carry_v the_o face_n of_o christian_n but_o sure_o by_o outward_a call_n as_o yet_o they_o belong_v not_o unto_o christ._n and_o what_o be_v these_o outward_a thing_n to_o be_v rejoice_v in_o admit_v that_o a_o man_n have_v all_o learning_n authority_n riches_n and_o credit_n be_v they_o not_o common_a as_o well_o to_o the_o wicked_a as_o to_o the_o godly_a be_v they_o not_o so_o transitory_a and_o insufficient_a that_o the_o more_o a_o man_n have_v of_o they_o the_o more_o he_o may_v have_v do_v they_o make_v the_o possessor_n the_o better_a can_v they_o keep_v evil_a from_o he_o can_v they_o minister_v comfort_n to_o the_o afflict_a conscience_n can_v they_o make_v we_o rejoice_v in_o the_o hour_n of_o death_n or_o can_v they_o save_v we_o from_o confusion_n before_o god_n his_o judgement_n seat_n sure_o this_o be_v not_o in_o wit_n eloquence_n learning_n friend_n glory_n riches_n and_o authority_n all_o which_o the_o wicked_a know_v better_a to_o abuse_v than_o the_o godly_a to_o use_v but_o in_o christ_n which_o be_v accurse_v and_o in_o his_o cross_n which_o be_v a_o blessing_n unto_o us._n see_v it_o be_v so_o well_o do_v the_o apostle_n to_o rejoice_v in_o this_o above_o all_o for_o be_v a_o man_n never_o so_o good_a so_o glorious_a so_o learned_a so_o well_o bring_v up_o of_o such_o authority_n he_o must_v stoop_v at_o god_n his_o judgement_n seat_n and_o there_o fall_v like_o a_o miserable_a caitiff_n unless_o he_o use_v these_o thing_n to_o god_n his_o glory_n and_o above_o suffer_v for_o the_o profession_n of_o christ_n because_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o another_o place_n how_o he_o do_v bear_v about_o with_o he_o the_o mark_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o his_o body_n but_o this_o sense_n be_v too_o hard_o to_o be_v brook_v that_o we_o shall_v rejoice_v in_o nothing_o but_o in_o affliction_n albeit_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o those_o affliction_n which_o we_o suffer_v for_o christ_n his_o sake_n again_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n take_v for_o affliction_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o principal_a cause_n of_o the_o world_n part_n well_o away_o with_o a_o ordinary_a course_n in_o preach_v and_o so_o long_o as_o it_o fall_v into_o a_o oratory_n stile_n and_o just_a proportion_n of_o word_n or_o so_o long_a as_o a_o man_n show_v a_o witty_a invention_n and_o comely_a compose_v of_o the_o matter_n but_o if_o a_o man_n press_v into_o the_o conscience_n of_o man_n and_o with_o some_o vehemency_n speak_v against_o their_o familiar_a sin_n straight_a way_n they_o say_v sure_o this_o kind_n of_o teach_v bewray_v he_o to_o be_v brainesick_a and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o more_o weary_a herein_o let_v we_o consider_v who_o they_o be_v that_o invey_v thus_o against_o the_o apostle_n be_v they_o not_o man_n out_o of_o every_o nation_n fear_v god_n and_o such_o as_o be_v somewhat_o religious_a yes_o sure_o and_o who_o nowadays_o will_v soon_o and_o sore_a open_a their_o mouth_n against_o zealous_a preacher_n than_o man_n claborate_v in_o art_n and_o skilful_a in_o precept_n who_o not_o be_v able_a by_o reason_n to_o see_v into_o this_o vehemency_n judge_v they_o that_o use_v it_o too_o austere_o wherefore_o as_o this_o must_v correct_v judgement_n in_o hearer_n lest_o they_o just_o offend_v god_n in_o be_v unjust_o offend_v at_o they_o that_o be_v zealous_a for_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n sake_n so_o also_o it_o must_v teach_v the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n patience_n if_o sometime_o they_o be_v wrong_o construe_v &_o so_o recompense_v their_o fury_n with_o meekness_n as_o the_o lord_n may_v humble_v their_o adversary_n the_o more_o even_o by_o their_o meek_a deal_n of_o who_o they_o that_o these_o man_n see_v the_o apostle_n meekness_n be_v far_o more_o win_v and_o soon_o humble_v than_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v breathe_v out_o furious_a speech_n and_o so_o have_v cease_v from_o his_o holy_a business_n and_o we_o shall_v see_v by_o experience_n that_o man_n think_v one_o to_o be_v curious_a singular_a or_o precise_a after_o the_o lord_n have_v sanctify_v some_o cross_n upon_o they_o and_o humble_v they_o in_o some_o measure_n underneath_o his_o hand_n they_o be_v more_o humble_v at_o the_o meekness_n and_o long_o suffer_v of_o he_o who_o they_o offend_v than_o by_o any_o other_o mean_n because_o they_o then_o perceive_v they_o have_v resist_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o persecute_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o he_o in_o the_o last_o day_n that_o be_v when_o christ_n shall_v be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n preach_v unto_o the_o gentile_n believe_v on_o in_o the_o world_n and_o receive_v up_o in_o glory_n shall_v these_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n confess_v the_o scripture_n of_o god_n to_o be_v perfect_a and_o absolute_a to_o salvation_n join_v none_o other_o thing_n with_o they_o but_o say_v that_o we_o live_v in_o the_o last_o day_n wherein_o christ_n leave_v the_o fullness_n of_o doctrine_n of_o prayer_n of_o sacrament_n and_o discipline_n to_o the_o church_n by_o his_o apostle_n and_o therefore_o we_o mind_v no_o revelation_n justice_n and_o recompense_v vengeance_n to_o the_o wicked_a and_o restore_v the_o godly_a to_o their_o joy_n and_o yet_o show_v they_o that_o here_o be_v no_o place_n of_o rest_n but_o that_o they_o must_v lift_v up_o their_o head_n to_o heaven_n where_o they_o shall_v have_v rest_n without_o trouble_n now_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o these_o affliction_n work_v in_o the_o wicked_a and_o to_o what_o end_n they_o be_v send_v unto_o they_o sure_o to_o plague_v they_o and_o to_o leave_v they_o without_o excuse_n they_o be_v send_v to_o god_n his_o child_n to_o humble_v they_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o repentance_n to_o keep_v they_o from_o evil_a to_o encourage_v they_o in_o good_a and_o to_o recover_v they_o be_v fall_v but_o they_o be_v send_v to_o root_v out_o the_o wicked_a &_o to_o consume_v they_o from_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o therefore_o he_o pour_v out_o all_o the_o vial_n of_o his_o wrath_n upon_o the_o wicked_a remnant_n and_o these_o manifold_a plague_n have_v often_o come_v to_o pass_v where_o the_o gospel_n have_v be_v preach_v because_o as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a mercy_n &_o treasure_n if_o it_o be_v receive_v so_o the_o unnatural_a refusal_n of_o it_o do_v cause_v the_o great_a judgement_n so_o the_o israelite_n in_o the_o wilderness_n be_v punish_v first_o by_o idolatry_n then_o by_o plague_n &_o be_v root_v out_o of_o the_o land_n and_o after_o christ_n have_v speak_v the_o apostle_n preach_v &_o the_o jew_n remain_v unprofitable_a the_o lord_n in_o his_o justice_n in_o that_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o true_a christ_n suffer_v they_o to_o be_v delude_v by_o false_a christ_n and_o that_o they_o that_o will_v not_o profit_v by_o the_o true_a apostle_n shall_v be_v deceive_v by_o false_a apostle_n and_o then_o be_v punish_v with_o famine_n and_o sickness_n they_o be_v by_o the_o roman_n subdue_v when_o the_o gospel_n come_v to_o be_v preach_v among_o the_o gentile_n and_o be_v contemn_v the_o lord_n first_o punish_v they_o by_o suffer_v they_o to_o fall_v into_o vile_a sin_n and_o then_o after_o give_v they_o over_o to_o the_o turk_n we_o see_v how_o in_o the_o west-countrie_n where_o the_o gospel_n be_v preach_v and_o refuse_v the_o pope_n be_v send_v to_o they_o so_o likewise_o must_v we_o make_v our_o profit_n herein_o when_o god_n his_o spirit_n fall_v plentiful_o in_o we_o &_o yet_o man_n by_o his_o word_n will_v not_o be_v reform_v the_o lord_n will_v send_v heretic_n and_o wicked_a man_n to_o corrupt_v they_o and_o will_v the_o lord_n thus_o censure_v his_o own_o people_n and_o will_v he_o spare_v the_o wicked_a no_o when_o we_o think_v all_o be_v quiet_a the_o lord_n will_v send_v plague_n for_o refuse_v the_o health_n of_o our_o soul_n the_o lord_n will_v send_v famine_n for_o type_n in_o that_o the_o gospel_n never_o continue_v quiet_a or_o uncorrupt_a in_o any_o one_o place_n above_o the_o space_n of_o a_o hundred_o year_n well_o if_o we_o see_v not_o the_o beginning_n experience_n will_v teach_v we_o our_o miserable_a estate_n we_o see_v how_o needful_a affliction_n â—s_v whether_o we_o look_v to_o god_n his_o child_n or_o to_o the_o wicked_a misery_n make_v mercy_n sweet_a and_o trouble_n make_v grace_n gracious_a christ_n be_v then_o sweet_a and_o jesus_n be_v then_o a_o saviour_n when_o we_o feel_v no_o comfort_n at_o hand_n be_v drive_v and_o draw_v out_o of_o ourselves_o to_o seek_v some_o relief_n abroad_o and_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o in_o prosperity_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o nestle_v ourselves_o here_o below_o and_o forget_v the_o life_n to_o come_v we_o be_v blind_v with_o the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n &_o so_o we_o become_v worldling_n stay_v whole_o in_o these_o inferior_a thing_n now_o that_o god_n may_v by_o evidence_n prove_v how_o who_o he_o once_o love_v he_o always_o love_v &_o to_o admonish_v other_o a_o far_o off_o he_o send_v correction_n to_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o may_v not_o stay_v here_o below_o for_o if_o judgement_n begin_v at_o the_o house_n of_o god_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o the_o wicked_a if_o the_o lord_n so_o hamper_v the_o godly_a how_o shall_v the_o wicked_a look_n to_o escape_v now_o in_o these_o distress_n and_o misery_n it_o shall_v be_v that_o whosoever_o call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v save_v for_o so_o the_o lord_n offer_v grace_n in_o wrath_n mercy_n in_o judgement_n so_o will_v the_o lord_n move_v his_o choose_a and_o elect_a to_o desire_v these_o grace_n and_o will_v cause_v these_o judgement_n threaten_v to_o fructify_v while_o they_o that_o they_o need_v not_o to_o boast_v of_o any_o thing_n do_v see_v it_o be_v do_v in_o secret_a which_o who_o so_o do_v let_v he_o assure_v himself_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o so_o secret_a but_o it_o shall_v be_v reveal_v whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n if_o we_o do_v this_o then_o shall_v we_o not_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o those_o which_o beginning_n in_o the_o spirit_n end_n in_o the_o flesh_n or_o of_o those_o which_o serve_v god_n for_o a_o season_n and_o in_o the_o end_n fall_v away_o from_o he_o and_o his_o service_n doubtless_o it_o be_v a_o strange_a thing_n to_o see_v some_o who_o have_v be_v themselves_o a_o light_n unto_o other_o so_o now_o to_o shrink_v from_o god_n truth_n as_o that_o they_o shall_v become_v papist_n or_o of_o the_o family_n of_o love_n or_o of_o some_o other_o heresy_n the_o cause_n of_o this_o be_v because_o their_o inward_a stuff_n be_v corrupt_v and_o not_o full_o cure_v by_o effectual_a repentance_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o gross_a sin_n now_o of_o the_o infirmity_n of_o nature_n which_o remain_v ever_o in_o the_o best_a this_o inward_a infirmity_n corruption_n must_v be_v sell_v also_o for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o leave_v outward_a and_o gross_a sin_n except_o also_o we_o beat_v down_o the_o inward_a corruption_n of_o our_o own_o nature_n and_o although_o corruption_n we_o can_v altogether_o blot_v out_o this_o our_o natural_a corruption_n yet_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n may_v be_v so_o resident_a and_o dwell_v in_o we_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o only_o keep_v we_o from_o gross_a outward_a outrage_n and_o offence_n but_o also_o will_v hold_v down_o &_o keep_v short_a our_o natural_a corruption_n neither_o must_v we_o think_v it_o enough_o to_o sell_v the_o fruit_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n but_o we_o must_v also_o sell_v the_o corruption_n itself_o for_o as_o we_o see_v so_o long_o as_o the_o tree_n remain_v there_o will_v always_o spring_v forth_o some_o bud_n even_o so_o of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o long_o as_o the_o corruption_n of_o the_o nature_n reign_v in_o they_o so_o long_o do_v they_o burst_v out_o into_o some_o offence_n or_o other_o but_o most_o man_n make_v either_o little_a or_o no_o conscience_n at_o all_o of_o these_o little_a fault_n but_o it_o must_v be_v otherwise_o with_o we_o or_o else_o we_o can_v but_o displease_v god_n great_o for_o as_o a_o river_n dry_v up_o unto_o the_o fountain_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v rest_n from_o all_o empty_n of_o it_o it_o will_v increase_v again_o so_o except_o the_o child_n of_o god_n do_v keep_v down_o their_o natural_a corruption_n although_o they_o offend_v not_o corruption_n as_o the_o reprobate_n and_o wicked_a in_o monstrous_a sin_n against_o god_n yet_o they_o can_v but_o have_v great_a downfal_n wherefore_o we_o must_v not_o with_o the_o woman_n whereof_o the_o poet_n speak_v see_v and_o behold_v good_a and_o lawful_a thing_n and_o follow_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a neither_o
