schoolman_n give_v a_o good_a reason_n of_o it_o and_o we_o may_v take_v it_o from_o they_o because_o spiritual_a light_n be_v above_o we_o it_o transcend_v we_o we_o have_v not_o enough_o in_o we_o to_o see_v spiritual_a object_n for_o they_o be_v supernatural_a and_o above_o our_o reach_n but_o other_o thing_n be_v proportionable_a to_o we_o bat_n and_o owl_n in_o the_o night_n can_v see_v well_o because_o the_o glimmer_a light_n and_o their_o weak_a eye_n agree_v well_o together_o so_o can_v we_o discern_v vain_a thing_n but_o thing_n true_o spiritual_a we_o do_v not_o 1_o cor._n 2.14_o spiritual_a thing_n must_v be_v discern_v by_o spiritual_a light_n a_o natural_a man_n can_v conceive_v of_o they_o why_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v that_o be_v they_o be_v above_o he_o and_o his_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o reach_v they_o consider_v that_o blindness_n in_o the_o understanding_n that_o unaptnesse_n how_o quick_a and_o ready_a man_n be_v to_o bring_v their_o own_o end_n to_o pass_v how_o wise_a be_v they_o for_o other_o thing_n but_o they_o desire_v not_o to_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o when_o they_o apply_v themselves_o to_o it_o they_o profit_v not_o by_o it_o add_v to_o this_o blindness_n the_o unteachablenesse_n of_o the_o understanding_n it_o the_o resistance_n that_o be_v in_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o a_o simple_a blindness_n but_o a_o resistance_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o a_o unaptnesse_n to_o receive_v it_o now_o this_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o second_o which_o you_o may_v see_v by_o this_o comparison_n the_o air_n be_v dark_a but_o it_o be_v fit_a to_o receive_v light_n if_o the_o sun_n cast_v light_a into_o it_o but_o the_o understanding_n of_o a_o man_n be_v not_o so_o it_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o receive_v light_n but_o resist_v it_o philosopher_n be_v wont_a to_o say_v that_o the_o soul_n the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n be_v rasa_fw-la tabula_fw-la that_o have_v nothing_o write_v on_o it_o it_o be_v a_o table_n of_o wax_n to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a and_o will_v receive_v a_o quick_a impression_n but_o a_o table_n of_o flint_n of_o adamant_n to_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a therefore_o the_o mighty_a god_n must_v write_v his_o law_n in_o our_o heart_n for_o we_o want_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o be_v of_o ourselves_o unteachable_a and_o therefore_o this_o disadvantage_n we_o have_v that_o preach_v the_o gospel_n above_o other_o if_o a_o astronomer_n come_v and_o tell_v a_o countryman_n that_o a_o star_n be_v big_a than_o the_o earth_n it_o will_v seem_v a_o strange_a position_n at_o the_o first_o hear_n but_o if_o he_o may_v have_v liberty_n to_o deal_v with_o he_o and_o to_o demonstrate_v his_o ground_n he_o may_v make_v he_o to_o believe_v it_o and_o to_o see_v reason_n for_o it_o but_o we_o can_v do_v so_o we_o can_v only_o propound_v thing_n to_o faith_n and_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o blindness_n in_o man_n but_o a_o unteachablenesse_n and_o resistance_n against_o the_o truth_n add_v to_o this_o the_o incredulity_n of_o the_o understanding_n how_o unapt_a it_o be_v to_o believe_v it_o in_o other_o thing_n it_o be_v too_o credulous_a and_o apt_a to_o believe_v and_o to_o be_v deceive_v with_o false_a tale_n and_o idle_a story_n but_o come_v to_o the_o scripture_n doubt_n and_o question_n arise_v therefore_o this_o unaptnesse_n of_o the_o mind_n to_o believe_v be_v to_o be_v consider_v this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o 2_o cor._n 4.4_o where_o it_o be_v say_v the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n have_v blind_v the_o mind_n of_o they_o which_o believe_v not_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v clear_a you_o may_v as_o well_o see_v the_o light_n of_o it_o as_o you_o see_v the_o light_n of_o the_o sun_n at_o noonday_n but_o the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n have_v blind_v your_o eye_n not_o by_o a_o privative_a extinction_n of_o the_o light_n for_o that_o be_v more_o than_o the_o devil_n can_v do_v but_o by_o a_o positive_a blindness_n a_o positive_a ignorance_n that_o be_v the_o devil_n tell_v you_o something_o against_o it_o and_o that_o you_o believe_v and_o that_o be_v our_o nature_n we_o be_v more_o ready_a to_o believe_v the_o devil_n than_o god_n this_o may_v seem_v strange_a yet_o eve_n you_o know_v do_v it_o and_o that_o sin_n be_v transmit_v to_o all_o our_o nature_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o believe_v false_a suggestion_n against_o the_o truth_n which_o weaken_v faith_n rather_o than_o the_o sure_a word_n of_o god_n it_o last_o of_o all_o add_v to_o all_o this_o the_o enmity_n of_o the_o understanding_n which_o be_v more_o than_o all_o the_o rest_n rom._n 8.7_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v enmity_n against_o god_n that_o be_v the_o understanding_n be_v not_o only_o vain_a ready_a to_o pitch_v on_o idle_a speculataion_n and_o not_o only_o blind_a ready_a to_o resist_v and_o not_o only_o slow_a and_o backward_o to_o believe_v but_o it_o be_v a_o enemy_n and_o fight_v against_o the_o truth_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v in_o these_o word_n it_o be_v enmity_n and_o why_o it_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n neither_o indeed_o can_v be_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o enemy_n that_o be_v when_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n look_v on_o the_o exactness_n and_o strictness_n of_o holiness_n and_o pureness_n that_o god_n require_v he_o do_v not_o mean_a to_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o and_o see_v he_o will_v not_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o he_o resist_v it_o fight_v against_o it_o as_o a_o enemy_n look_v on_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n contrary_n to_o he_o do_v it_o give_v more_o liberty_n he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o embrace_v it_o and_o think_v well_o of_o it_o but_o because_o it_o be_v too_o strict_a he_o break_v these_o cord_n and_o cast_v they_o away_o and_o fight_v against_o the_o truth_n and_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o every_o man_n now_o when_o we_o say_v the_o wisdom_n of_o thâ—_n flesh_n be_v enmity_n we_o do_v not_o say_v that_o man_n oppose_v the_o truth_n for_o there_o be_v not_o any_o truth_n in_o divinity_n but_o a_o man_n may_v full_o embrace_v and_o assent_v to_o it_o and_o yet_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o holiness_n to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n stamp_v therein_o to_o the_o save_a knowledge_n that_o be_v the_o save_a manner_n of_o know_v the_o truth_n he_o assent_v to_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v many_o know_v much_o but_o nothing_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o know_v so_o many_o may_v know_v these_o spiritual_a truth_n and_o confess_v they_o to_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o yet_o may_v have_v a_o reluctance_n against_o they_o a_o distaste_n of_o they_o they_o savour_v not_o the_o thing_n they_o understand_v tit._n 1._o ult_n they_o be_v to_o every_o good_a work_n reprobate_a which_o i_o take_v not_o to_o be_v mean_v passive_o but_o active_o that_o be_v man_n that_o can_v judge_v aright_o of_o any_o work_n that_o look_v not_o on_o it_o with_o a_o right_a eye_n as_o a_o thing_n lovely_a and_o imitable_a as_o right_a and_o good_a but_o in_o this_o regard_n they_o strive_v against_o it_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o some_o that_o exalt_v themselves_o against_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o be_v that_o fight_n and_o defend_v themselves_o against_o it_o that_o speak_v evil_a of_o the_o thing_n they_o know_v for_o they_o know_v they_o else_o they_o will_v never_o speak_v of_o they_o but_o they_o know_v they_o not_o so_o as_o to_o love_v they_o and_o delight_n in_o they_o therefore_o they_o resist_v and_o fortify_v themselves_o against_o the_o way_n of_o god_n against_o the_o strictness_n and_o holiness_n that_o god_n require_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o to_o think_v amiss_o of_o they_o that_o they_o need_v not_o to_o be_v so_o exact_a this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o every_o man_n and_o the_o enmity_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o now_o my_o brethren_n if_o the_o understanding_n be_v thus_o bad_a think_v it_o be_v no_o small_a matter_n if_o the_o light_n that_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v darkness_n how_o great_a be_v that_o darkness_n the_o understanding_n be_v that_o that_o must_v guide_v thou_o and_o when_o the_o stern_a be_v out_o of_o order_n when_o the_o auriga_fw-la the_o waggoner_n be_v blind_a or_o amiss_o and_o see_v not_o the_o right_a way_n think_v what_o a_o case_n you_o be_v in_o but_o you_o will_v say_v this_o be_v ignorance_n but_o be_v not_o this_o of_o great_a consequence_n when_o a_o man_n be_v blind_a he_o know_v not_o whither_o he_o go_v he_o
and_o no_o way_n to_o escape_v it_o christ._n then_o go_v to_o christ_n for_o these_o two_o thing_n we_o must_v do_v first_o we_o must_v have_v our_o mouth_n stop_v that_o so_o all_o man_n may_v be_v culpable_a before_o he_o second_o we_o must_v be_v shut_v up_o in_o prison_n he_o shut_v up_o all_o under_o sin_n that_o the_o promise_n may_v be_v to_o they_o that_o believe_v when_o a_o man_n be_v shut_v up_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o evasion_n this_o will_v bring_v he_o in_o indeed_o if_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n can_v find_v any_o way_n to_o get_v out_o he_o will_v never_o come_v in_o to_o christ_n but_o when_o he_o shall_v not_o tell_v how_o to_o escape_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n if_o he_o sin_n against_o man_n man_n shall_v judge_v he_o but_o who_o shall_v when_o he_o sin_n against_o god_n if_o he_o consider_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n wrath_n if_o he_o shut_v up_o and_o his_o mouth_n stop_v and_o he_o leave_v inexcusable_a and_o shall_v see_v himself_o a_o miserable_a man_n i_o say_v this_o will_v make_v he_o go_v home_o to_o christ_n and_o that_o be_v the_o use_n you_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o and_o be_v sure_a he_o will_v receive_v you_o if_o you_o go_v to_o he_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n like_o the_o sting_n when_o you_o be_v wound_v therewith_o then_o know_v there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o be_v heal_v but_o to_o look_v up_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n the_o brazen_a serpent_n and_o if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o wound_v he_o will_v not_o look_v up_o god_n promise_n be_v general_a he_o have_v free_o let_v these_o drive_v thou_o to_o the_o lord_n christ_n and_o thou_o shall_v certain_o be_v accept_v and_o so_o much_o shall_v serve_v for_o that_o point_n the_o end_n of_o the_o four_o sermon_n certain_a sermon_n upon_o humiliation_n the_o five_o sermon_n roman_n 1.18_o for_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v from_o heaven_n against_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n which_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n and_o now_o we_o have_v almost_o go_v through_o these_o word_n unrighteousness_n the_o last_o part_n of_o they_o remain_v that_o be_v which_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n wherein_o after_o the_o apostle_n have_v declare_v the_o corruption_n of_o man_n nature_n in_o general_a he_o now_o pitch_v on_o one_o particular_a especial_o that_o be_v such_o as_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v considerable_a in_o these_o word_n mark_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o that_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n which_o god_n have_v write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o natural_a man_n second_o that_o this_o truth_n be_v withheld_a by_o they_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d signify_v keep_v it_o in_o prison_n it_o be_v keep_v down_o not_o suffer_v to_o rise_v up_o and_o show_v itself_o in_o practice_n and_o action_n three_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v out_o of_o love_n to_o unrighteousness_n or_o delight_v therein_o that_o be_v of_o unrighteous_a lust_n but_o we_o will_v put_v all_o these_o into_o this_o one_o proposition_n doctr._n it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o best_a man_n before_o regeneration_n to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n that_o be_v the_o point_n paul_n speak_v not_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o some_o few_o but_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n in_o general_n and_o these_o be_v the_o man_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v chief_o reveal_v these_o be_v the_o man_n that_o of_o all_o other_o think_v themselves_o the_o free_a civil_a man_n that_o carry_v themselves_o sober_o deal_v just_o with_o man_n that_o do_v well_o in_o many_o thing_n that_o indeed_o know_v much_o but_o practise_v not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n these_o i_o say_v be_v the_o man_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n etc._n etc._n object_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v object_v here_o that_o be_v strange_a that_o the_o more_o truth_n be_v reveal_v to_o man_n the_o more_o knowledge_n they_o have_v the_o more_o moral_a virtue_n they_o practise_v the_o worse_a it_o shall_v be_v with_o they_o answ._n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o have_v of_o this_o truth_n the_o bestow_n of_o any_o of_o these_o common_a grace_n put_v no_o man_n into_o a_o better_a condition_n it_o be_v god_n work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o reckon_n only_o indeed_o the_o use_v or_o abuse_v of_o they_o be_v his_o own_o work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o own_o reckon_n and_o therefore_o in_o regard_n he_o may_v abuse_v they_o they_o may_v do_v he_o hurt_v and_o those_o that_o have_v much_o of_o these_o truth_n but_o use_v they_o not_o or_o that_o if_o they_o do_v use_v some_o of_o they_o yet_o do_v it_o for_o their_o own_o end_n and_o not_o simple_o for_o god_n glory_n be_v as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o those_o that_o run_v into_o the_o great_a outrage_n man_n that_o be_v more_o civil_a be_v like_o wolf_n tie_v up_o other_o be_v like_o wolf_n at_o liberty_n it_o be_v true_a other_o man_n do_v more_o mischief_n that_o be_v they_o commit_v more_o sinful_a action_n and_o consequent_o run_v into_o more_o guilt_n and_o their_o condemnation_n shall_v be_v great_a but_o those_o that_o be_v tie_v up_o that_o by_o civility_n have_v their_o lust_n restrain_v be_v no_o less_o abominable_a in_o god_n sight_n than_o other_o a_o wolf_n tie_v up_o be_v as_o hateful_a to_o a_o sheep_n as_o one_o that_o be_v at_o large_a and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o these_o man_n for_o it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o best_a man_n before_o regeneration_n to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n now_o in_o this_o point_n we_o will_v handle_v three_o thing_n first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v second_o how_o it_o be_v withheld_a three_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o withhold_a the_o truth_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o threefold_a kind_n of_o truth_n first_o a_o natural_a truth_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o who_o the_o scripture_n be_v never_o reveal_v second_o a_o common_a truth_n or_o common_a knowledge_n such_o as_o they_o have_v that_o live_v in_o the_o church_n but_o be_v not_o sanctify_v three_o a_o spiritual_a knowledge_n which_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n of_o they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v the_o two_o first_o whereof_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o common_a knowledge_n natural_a man_n may_v have_v now_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v to_o do_v be_v to_o show_v you_o what_o this_o knowledge_n here_o mean_v be_v because_o the_o difference_n be_v not_o very_o apparent_a now_o as_o to_o understand_v what_o a_o accident_n be_v you_o consider_v the_o subject_n the_o author_n and_o efficient_a and_o the_o extent_n thereof_o so_o consider_v you_o these_o three_o thing_n and_o then_o you_o shall_v know_v what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n first_o where_o this_o truth_n be_v now_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n place_v in_o the_o speculative_a part_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o be_v that_o by_o which_o we_o know_v and_o judge_v aright_o concern_v god_n and_o moral_a virtue_n what_o be_v good_a and_o what_o be_v bad_a what_o be_v just_a and_o what_o be_v unjust_a whereby_o many_o man_n can_v discourse_v learned_o and_o clear_o as_o seneca_n and_o tully_n and_o other_o of_o the_o heathen_a in_o who_o we_o find_v many_o glimmering_n and_o sparkle_n of_o true_a light_n as_o we_o may_v find_v flower_n in_o the_o waste_n though_o the_o proper_a place_n be_v the_o garden_n the_o church_n be_v the_o garden_n of_o god_n as_o in_o canticle_n my_o sister_n my_o spouse_n be_v as_o a_o garden_n enclose_v and_o it_o be_v true_a these_o flower_n proper_o grow_v there_o and_o if_o you_o will_v have_v they_o you_o must_v seek_v they_o in_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o we_o may_v likewise_o find_v they_o abroad_o second_o this_o truth_n be_v place_v in_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o that_o be_v when_o we_o judge_v of_o good_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v and_o of_o ill_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v do_v and_o that_o as_o have_v reference_n to_o god_n that_o judge_n or_o reward_n and_o this_o be_v it_o divine_v call_v conscience_n and_o it_o differ_v from_o the_o other_o in_o this_o that_o that_o judge_v simple_o whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a but_o this_o give_v law_n and_o rule_n and_o edict_n of_o life_n it_o
therefore_o since_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n shall_v in_o such_o a_o manner_n be_v reveal_v against_o such_o as_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n you_o need_v no_o other_o argument_n to_o show_v that_o the_o sin_n be_v great_a again_o one_o evidence_n more_o be_v in_o this_o very_a chapter_n that_o be_v from_o the_o kind_n of_o punishment_n for_o punishment_n you_o know_v where_o the_o judge_n be_v just_a be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o sin_n now_o mark_v god_n punish_v this_o with_o give_v they_o up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n for_o this_o cause_n say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 1.26_o god_n give_v they_o up_o unto_o vile_a affection_n and_o afterward_o in_o the_o eight_o and_o twenty_o verse_n as_o they_o regard_v not_o to_o know_v god_n even_o so_o or_o therefore_o god_n deliver_v they_o up_o to_o a_o reprobate_a mind_n that_o be_v a_o mind_n without_o knowledge_n a_o injudicious_a mind_n that_o can_v judge_v of_o thing_n and_o look_v in_o all_o the_o book_n of_o god_n among_o all_o the_o army_n of_o sorrow_n there_o be_v not_o any_o like_o this_o to_o be_v give_v up_o to_o vile_a affection_n to_o lust_n to_o a_o injudicious_a mind_n in_o matter_n of_o god_n and_o thing_n belong_v to_o their_o salvation_n this_o punishment_n show_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n but_o man_n slight_a this_o as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a judgement_n so_o it_o be_v the_o least_o feel_v man_n lie_v at_o rest_n they_o be_v cast_v into_o a_o dead_a sleep_n but_o it_o be_v like_o the_o sleep_n of_o they_o that_o have_v crazy_a brain_n they_o wake_v in_o a_o frenzy_n so_o these_o shall_v wake_v in_o a_o horrible_a astonishment_n their_o sleep_n be_v such_o a_o calm_a as_o will_v end_v in_o a_o tempest_n and_o such_o a_o tempest_n as_o shall_v never_o be_v blow_v over_o therefore_o let_v no_o man_n bless_v himself_o in_o this_o i_o feel_v none_o of_o these_o thing_n for_o thou_o have_v the_o great_a judgement_n on_o thou_o when_o thou_o which_o it_o may_v be_v say_v as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n let_v it_o rule_v in_o your_o soul_n that_o where_o by_o man_n shall_v be_v act_v be_v by_o man_n imprison_v therefore_o rom._n 2.9_o the_o apostle_n denounce_v tribulation_n and_o anguish_n upon_o every_o one_o that_o disobeye_n the_o truth_n intimate_v that_o truth_n be_v our_o king_n that_o shall_v it_o into_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v appear_v heinous_a by_o the_o law_n of_o man_n it_o be_v death_n to_o kill_v child_n that_o be_v beget_v by_o man_n but_o this_o truth_n be_v beget_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v put_v in_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o to_o extinguish_v this_o truth_n not_o to_o suffer_v it_o to_o live_v not_o to_o nourish_v it_o not_o to_o bring_v it_o forth_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n of_o all_o even_o the_o heathen_a shall_v rise_v in_o judgement_n against_o christian_n for_o this_o who_o maintain_v the_o vestal_a fire_n because_o they_o conceive_v it_o to_o come_v from_o heaven_n they_o for_o that_o cause_n never_o suffer_v it_o to_o go_v out_o but_o this_o truth_n be_v a_o fire_n which_o come_v from_o heaven_n a_o spark_n put_v into_o the_o chief_a thing_n in_o a_o man_n in_o a_o ship_n a_o wise_a man_n will_v have_v a_o eye_n to_o the_o rudder_n for_o that_o turn_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o ship_n of_o all_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o we_o look_v to_o our_o eye_n the_o guide_n of_o the_o body_n so_o we_o shall_v learn_v to_o watch_v and_o be_v tender_a over_o this_o truth_n as_o over_o our_o eye_n for_o the_o one_o be_v the_o light_n but_o of_o this_o life_n the_o other_o be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o eternal_a life_n in_o micah_n 3.5_o it_o be_v threaten_v as_o a_o great_a judgement_n when_o god_n shall_v turn_v their_o vision_n into_o night_n and_o their_o divination_n into_o darkness_n when_o the_o sun_n shall_v go_v down_o on_o their_o prophet_n and_o the_o day_n shall_v be_v dark_a on_o they_o and_o will_v you_o bring_v this_o judgement_n on_o yourselves_o they_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o that_o have_v not_o use_v this_o truth_n but_o imprison_v it_o and_o labour_v as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v to_o cause_v the_o sun_n to_o go_v down_o and_o rise_v no_o more_o to_o turn_v the_o day_n into_o night_n let_v they_o consider_v what_o the_o sin_n be_v when_o you_o read_v the_o story_n of_o the_o king_n and_o hear_v they_o say_v to_o the_o prophet_n prophesy_v not_o imprison_v they_o as_o ahab_n do_v micaiah_n and_o slay_v they_o as_o joash_n do_v zecharial_a you_o will_v little_o think_v you_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n but_o when_o this_o truth_n come_v as_o a_o prophet_n from_o god_n and_o tell_v you_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n ought_v to_o thou_o and_o it_o have_v god_n on_o its_o side_n it_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o almighty_a who_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o execute_v upon_o thou_o whatsoever_o this_o truth_n shall_v allege_v against_o thou_o though_o he_o do_v it_o not_o present_o yet_o all_o the_o while_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o damnation_n as_o it_o be_v with_o judas_n and_o achitophel_n or_o restrain_v it_o thou_o shall_v find_v it_o will_v be_v revenge_v on_o thou_o for_o it_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n five_o 5._o if_o this_o be_v the_o miserable_a condition_n of_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n rule_v thus_o to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o there_o have_v be_v word_n of_o humiliation_n and_o reproof_n so_o let_v i_o shut_v up_o with_o a_o word_n of_o exhortation_n be_v exhort_v therefore_o from_o hence_o to_o give_v this_o truth_n leave_v to_o rule_v and_o govern_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o life_n do_v not_o make_v a_o bank_n against_o it_o or_o a_o hedge_n about_o it_o restrain_v it_o not_o fetter_v it_o not_o but_o suffer_v it_o to_o walk_v free_o in_o every_o part_n of_o thy_o conversation_n to_o rectify_v and_o cover_v when_o you_o be_v in_o darkness_n thus_o god_n enlighten_v man_n he_o kindle_v a_o certain_a light_n in_o their_o mind_n for_o so_o the_o word_n signify_v he_o put_v a_o light_n into_o their_o heart_n by_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o evil_a of_o that_o which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o will_n and_o contrary_a to_o his_o will_n of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o way_n to_o happiness_n and_o that_o which_o be_v not_o and_o this_o be_v make_v know_v the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v mark_v in_o this_o proposition_n know_v be_v to_o show_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n work_n second_o god_n make_v it_o know_v by_o his_o work_n special_o by_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n by_o his_o work_n of_o providence_n which_o be_v ordinary_a and_o extraordinary_a as_o miracle_n that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n look_v on_o the_o great_a volume_n of_o the_o world_n there_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n will_v have_v know_v be_v write_v in_o capital_a letter_n and_o such_o letter_n as_o every_o one_o may_v understand_v and_o read_v so_o as_o that_o which_o the_o papist_n say_v of_o image_n they_o be_v layman_n book_n and_o ignorant_a man_n book_n so_o and_o in_o a_o much_o better_a sense_n this_o book_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o heathen_a man_n book_n wherein_o
ought_v to_o pray_v fervent_o and_o frequent_o i_o ought_v to_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n sabbath_n but_o out_o of_o a_o unlistinesse_n to_o it_o out_o of_o love_n to_o ease_v and_o pleasure_n that_o carry_v he_o another_o way_n he_o neglect_v it_o and_o so_o the_o duty_n lie_v undo_v this_o be_v the_o commission_n of_o a_o know_a sin_n so_o again_o i_o know_v i_o ought_v not_o to_o remember_v a_o injury_n i_o ought_v to_o forgive_v my_o enemy_n yet_o thou_o invite_v he_o to_o do_v thou_o a_o new_a injury_n when_o this_o be_v know_v and_o not_o practise_v in_o this_o case_n man_n commit_v a_o know_a sin_n so_o again_o do_v thou_o not_o know_v that_o thou_o ought_v not_o to_o use_v any_o dalliance_n any_o touch_n of_o uncleanness_n any_o chamber_a or_o wantonness_n if_o a_o man_n know_v sin_n so_o in_o many_o other_o thing_n in_o case_n of_o election_n or_o in_o do_v of_o business_n this_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v choose_v and_o business_n ought_v to_o be_v carry_v thus_o but_o yet_o out_o of_o some_o by-respect_n a_o man_n will_v have_v it_o carry_v otherwise_o this_o be_v commit_v of_o a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o envy_n this_o man_n preferment_n may_v be_v profitable_a but_o because_o his_o eminency_n may_v be_v hurtful_a to_o i_o i_o can_v affect_v he_o this_o be_v a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o the_o sacrament_n do_v you_o not_o know_v you_o ought_v to_o receive_v often_o and_o not_o to_o neglect_v it_o in_o the_o congregation_n where_o you_o be_v be_v you_o not_o bind_v to_o that_o you_o think_v it_o a_o sin_n not_o to_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o be_v it_o not_o so_o not_o to_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n if_o he_o shall_v be_v cut_v off_o that_o come_v not_o to_o the_o passeover_n shall_v not_o he_o be_v cut_v off_o that_o come_v not_o to_o the_o sacrament_n so_o you_o know_v you_o must_v renew_v your_o repentance_n be_v not_o these_o truth_n know_v and_o yet_o will_v you_o commit_v these_o sin_n go_v through_o any_o know_a sin_n and_o in_o this_o case_n you_o do_v withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n but_o what_o be_v it_o to_o commit_v a_o know_a sin_n because_o it_o may_v be_v i_o be_o not_o convince_v sufficient_o of_o that_o by_o this_o thou_o may_v know_v it_o if_o thou_o find_v thy_o conscience_n to_o give_v a_o secret_a intimation_n that_o it_o be_v naught_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n it_o be_v a_o know_a sin_n though_o thou_o have_v get_v many_o argument_n for_o it_o and_o can_v dispute_v for_o it_o for_o thy_o conscience_n shall_v witness_v against_o thou_o as_o in_o case_n of_o usury_n and_o desire_v god_n to_o try_v he_o another_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o search_v because_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lie_v in_o some_o sin_n or_o because_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o conscience_n trouble_v with_o it_o this_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o false_a heart_n though_o they_o do_v not_o know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sin_n yet_o it_o have_v the_o shadow_n of_o a_o sin_n and_o they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o examine_v it_o to_o the_o full_a it_o show_v it_o be_v no_o less_o 2._o second_o the_o second_o case_n wherein_o a_o man_n withhold_v this_o knowledge_n knowledge_n and_o detain_v this_o truth_n which_o god_n have_v make_v manifest_a be_v when_o he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o enlarge_v it_o a_o man_n that_o have_v already_o some_o knowledge_n as_o every_o man_n have_v some_o and_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o add_v to_o this_o knowledge_n to_o increase_v it_o that_o man_n proper_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n for_o he_o that_o withhold_v fuel_n put_v out_o the_o fire_n as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o cast_v water_n on_o it_o and_o he_o that_o take_v away_o food_n from_o a_o live_a creature_n kill_v it_o as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o take_v away_o its_o life_n with_o violence_n so_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o feed_v this_o with_o fuel_n with_o that_o which_o may_v make_v it_o grow_v and_o increase_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o labour_v to_o enlarge_v it_o thou_o do_v extinguish_v it_o those_o and_o of_o these_o man_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n first_o such_o as_o do_v not_o care_n for_o any_o knowledge_n at_o all_o or_o if_o they_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v yet_o they_o recall_v it_o not_o meditate_v not_o upon_o it_o and_o so_o as_o good_a never_o a_o whit_n as_o never_o the_o better_a some_o thing_n they_o must_v do_v for_o fashion_n sake_n but_o if_o they_o do_v hear_v they_o do_v it_o in_o a_o negligent_a manner_n they_o be_v ever_o learning_n and_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n these_o be_v the_o first_o sort_n of_o man_n but_o there_o be_v a_o second_o sort_n and_o that_o be_v those_o which_o have_v know_v much_o have_v hear_v much_o have_v go_v very_o far_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o truth_n yet_o will_v not_o go_v to_o the_o uttermost_a i_o may_v resemble_v they_o by_o felix_n he_o go_v not_o far_o but_o i_o use_v it_o as_o a_o resemblance_n when_o paul_n preach_v and_o begin_v to_o know_v some_o measure_n of_o this_o truth_n when_o some_o of_o these_o spark_n begin_v to_o be_v revive_v and_o stir_v up_o in_o he_o he_o bid_v he_o go_v away_o and_o say_v he_o will_v call_v for_o he_o another_o time_n but_o he_o be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o his_o word_n so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v loath_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o that_o strictness_n and_o exactness_n that_o be_v require_v as_o our_o duty_n when_o he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o be_v straight_o lace_v that_o live_v at_o liberty_n and_o think_v he_o will_v do_v it_o before_o he_o die_v but_o put_v it_o off_o this_o man_n imprison_v the_o truth_n when_o the_o truth_n be_v bring_v to_o their_o door_n to_o such_o a_o high_a degreee_v that_o it_o be_v almost_o loose_a yet_o they_o let_v it_o lie_v there_o still_o when_o they_o shall_v come_v to_o agrippa_n case_n to_o be_v almost_o a_o christian_n this_o be_v to_o withhold_v it_o the_o uttermost_a end_n and_o finish_n of_o the_o work_n be_v all_o and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n man_n be_v so_o rich_a of_o it_o so_o when_o we_o care_v not_o for_o admonition_n to_o live_v exact_o and_o perfect_o in_o all_o thing_n when_o there_o shall_v be_v little_a reservation_n when_o we_o will_v have_v a_o little_a liberty_n in_o this_o or_o that_o i_o say_v the_o not_o admit_v of_o this_o the_o not_o go_v through_o with_o the_o work_n be_v a_o imprison_n of_o the_o truth_n when_o man_n shall_v come_v to_o be_v unwilling_a to_o be_v call_v on_o it_o be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n shut_v the_o door_n and_o draw_v the_o curtain_n about_o he_o it_o show_v that_o he_o delight_v to_o sleep_v that_o he_o mean_v to_o sleep_v and_o to_o continue_v so_o when_o a_o man_n put_v off_o the_o truth_n and_o will_v not_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o uttermost_a this_o be_v the_o second_o way_n of_o imprison_a the_o truth_n when_o he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o add_v fuel_n to_o give_v that_o which_o may_v strengthen_v and_o increase_v it_o three_o i_o will_v name_v but_o the_o three_o and_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v pass_v this_o degree_n 3._o and_o be_v come_v to_o be_v willing_a to_o know_v all_o truth_n mean_n do_v not_o desire_v to_o have_v any_o conceal_v from_o he_o do_v not_o say_v to_o
the_o prophet_n prophesy_v not_o but_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v inform_v to_o the_o full_a yet_o when_o he_o have_v it_o he_o act_v it_o not_o he_o do_v not_o exercise_n nor_o practise_v this_o truth_n that_o be_v another_o degree_n of_o withhold_a it_o and_o this_o be_v a_o frequent_a case_n for_o a_o man_n may_v know_v and_o be_v inform_v in_o all_o truth_n yet_o they_o may_v lie_v there_o unused_a and_o unact_v they_o may_v lie_v there_o idle_a now_o when_o a_o man_n be_v not_o willing_a to_o practise_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o these_o truth_n be_v use_v he_o do_v proper_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o for_o example_n the_o way_n to_o act_v the_o truth_n we_o have_v to_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o blow_v up_o these_o coal_n to_o bring_v they_o to_o present_a memory_n so_o as_o they_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o present_a practice_n be_v the_o communion_n of_o saint_n the_o company_n of_o holy_a man_n that_o when_o a_o man_n have_v forget_v godly_a company_n may_v bring_v to_o mind_n again_o so_o frequent_a read_n and_o hear_v these_o do_v act_v the_o truth_n for_o the_o end_n of_o our_o ministry_n be_v not_o only_o to_o make_v you_o to_o know_v these_o thing_n but_o to_o bring_v those_o thing_n to_o mind_n which_o you_o have_v forget_v if_o we_o will_v not_o use_v but_o neglect_v the_o mean_n of_o act_v the_o truth_n than_o we_o withhold_v it_o so_o for_o private_a prayer_n whereas_o a_o man_n shall_v bring_v his_o heart_n to_o god_n every_o day_n shall_v do_v it_o thorough_o shall_v call_v himself_o to_o a_o reckon_n for_o every_o sin_n for_o all_o sort_n of_o omission_n or_o of_o commission_n this_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o act_v this_o truth_n this_o good_a purpose_n and_o inclination_n this_o spark_n which_o god_n have_v kindle_v be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o they_o will_v be_v rake_v up_o in_o the_o ash_n again_o now_o perform_v prayer_n in_o a_o devout_a and_o fervent_a manner_n do_v lve_v they_o whereas_o to_o do_v thing_n for_o of_o negligence_n how_o be_v it_o then_o a_o imprison_n yes_o answ._n it_o be_v a_o imprison_a a_o surprise_v of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v with_o fire_n if_o it_o have_v not_o a_o vent_n though_o you_o good_a motion_n not_o only_o reveal_v but_o stir_v up_o some_o truth_n which_o concern_v his_o salvation_n and_o he_o do_v endeavour_v to_o put_v it_o out_o to_o quench_v it_o and_o labour_n to_o lay_v that_o truth_n asleep_a and_o be_v glad_a when_o by_o any_o mean_n he_o can_v forget_v it_o lest_o it_o shall_v trouble_v he_o this_o be_v a_o great_a suppessing_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o by_o this_o we_o not_o only_o suppress_v this_o truth_n but_o we_o do_v harden_v our_o own_o heart_n exceed_o as_o in_o iron_n when_o we_o quench_v it_o we_o do_v not_o only_o put_v out_o the_o fire_n but_o harden_v the_o iron_n so_o when_o god_n stir_v up_o many_o truth_n as_o it_o be_v in_o hear_v the_o word_n in_o apprehension_n of_o death_n in_o suffer_v some_o calamity_n in_o a_o good_a mood_n the_o put_v out_o of_o these_o do_v harden_v the_o heart_n therefore_o when_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v good_a purpose_n and_o think_v with_o himself_o i_o will_v now_o begin_v to_o be_v another_o man_n and_o to_o change_v my_o course_n and_o yet_o shall_v go_v into_o ill_a company_n such_o as_o it_o may_v be_v he_o have_v keep_v before_o this_o be_v a_o evident_a suffocate_a of_o the_o truth_n a_o thing_n often_o speak_v of_o and_o blame_v i_o not_o that_o i_o speak_v of_o it_o again_o for_o it_o be_v the_o great_a quench-coale_n of_o religion_n a_o man_n can_v prosper_v therein_o if_o he_o look_v not_o to_o his_o company_n because_o it_o be_v as_o a_o continual_a drop_n on_o a_o firebrand_n which_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o put_v out_o the_o light_n and_o life_n and_o grace_n which_o one_o have_v chrysostome_n compare_v ill_a company_n to_o put_v in_o of_o swine_n when_o a_o man_n have_v plant_v a_o orchard_n with_o tender_a plant_n when_o he_o have_v sow_v it_o and_o the_o corn_n or_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v appear_v leave_v the_o hedge_n open_a and_o let_v the_o swine_n come_v in_o and_o they_o will_v overturn_v all_o by_o the_o root_n so_o when_o we_o minister_n have_v sow_v the_o seed_n and_o it_o begin_v to_o grow_v a_o little_a to_o put_v forth_o when_o ill_a company_n come_v in_o they_o spoil_v all_o they_o mar_v all_o they_o pull_v up_o all_o by_o the_o root_n so_o that_o we_o have_v lose_v our_o labour_n it_o be_v indeed_o so_o effectual_a to_o keep_v down_o the_o seed_n and_o to_o make_v we_o imprison_v the_o truth_n again_o custom_n in_o sin_n give_v yourselves_o liberty_n in_o any_o sin_n that_o keep_v down_o the_o truth_n and_o nothing_o more_o therefore_o of_o all_o other_o thing_n you_o must_v know_v nothing_o suppress_v that_o truth_n that_o knowledge_n those_o beginning_n of_o grace_n those_o good_a motion_n in_o we_o so_o much_o as_o actual_a sin_n because_o it_o be_v quite_o contrary_a to_o it_o fire_n be_v not_o quench_v so_o much_o with_o any_o thing_n as_o with_o water_n be_v quite_o contrary_a thereto_o and_o light_n be_v not_o hide_v so_o much_o in_o any_o thing_n as_o in_o darkness_n take_v heed_n then_o that_o you_o be_v out_o this_o truth_n that_o it_o help_v it_o forward_o for_o their_o fall_n do_v but_o discover_v such_o sin_n and_o so_o it_o cause_v they_o to_o search_v themselves_o by_o which_o mean_n they_o creature_n a_o law_n and_o so_o long_o as_o he_o keep_v to_o that_o he_o be_v in_o a_o good_a condition_n and_o state_n now_o the_o law_n give_v to_o we_o be_v this_o truth_n in_o observe_v it_o thou_o shall_v keep_v thy_o life_n thy_o happiness_n take_v heed_n therefore_o of_o depart_v from_o it_o whensoever_o a_o man_n depart_v from_o it_o he_o be_v deceive_v and_o no_o man_n will_v there_o be_v a_o fault_n in_o his_o reason_n and_o for_o that_o mistake_v a_o thing_n and_o so_o be_v eve_n only_o deceive_v she_o be_v the_o weak_a but_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n when_o a_o
