condition_n of_o her_o communion_n a_o acknowledgement_n and_o profession_n of_o that_o for_o a_o truth_n which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v a_o error_n 2._o when_o she_o require_v of_o we_o as_o a_o obedience_n to_o the_o church_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o sin_n that_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n now_o this_o be_v our_o very_a case_n in_o the_o point_n of_o baptism_n it_o will_v justify_v that_o distinction_n which_o we_o hold_v needful_a between_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o those_o of_o the_o baptize_v believer_n but_o much_o more_o when_o there_o be_v some_o other_o thing_n as_o press_v perhaps_o as_o this_o but_o now_o let_v we_o hear_v the_o doctor_n consider_v say_v he_o what_o i_o have_v say_v upon_o the_o former_a question_n this_o question_n must_v be_v answer_v in_o the_o negative_a whether_o we_o consider_v infant-baptism_n as_o a_o thing_n lawful_a or_o allowable_a only_a or_o as_o a_o thing_n high_o requisite_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v do_v and_o as_o a_o foundation_n on_o which_o to_o build_v infant-baptism_n as_o a_o thing_n at_o least_o lawful_a and_o allowable_a he_o direct_o deny_v this_o principle_n that_o nothing_o be_v to_o be_v appoint_v in_o religious_a matter_n but_o what_o be_v warrant_v by_o precept_n and_o example_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n account_v this_o rule_n a_o absurdity_n and_o inconsistent_a with_o the_o free_a and_o manly_a nature_n of_o the_o christian_n religion_n and_o that_o it_o be_v a_o impracticable_a principle_n etc._n etc._n p._n 49_o 50._o but_o that_o this_o great_a principle_n well_o understand_v shall_v be_v speak_v against_o by_o a_o protestant_n be_v something_o strange_a and_o especial_o that_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o take_v place_n in_o that_o which_o be_v essential_a in_o a_o church-state_n as_o who_o be_v and_o who_o be_v not_o to_o be_v baptize_v be_v such_o a_o case_n but_o he_o will_v have_v infant-baptism_n to_o be_v admit_v as_o lawful_a and_o allowable_a though_o it_o be_v not_o warrant_v by_o precept_n nor_o example_n to_o free_v this_o principle_n from_o abuse_n as_o here_o suggest_v against_o it_o we_o will_v explain_v it_o as_o we_o and_o the_o good_a will_n of_o god_n towards_o they_o mat._n 18._o 14._o and_o if_o infant_n be_v uncapable_a of_o these_o as_o they_o be_v the_o end_v of_o baptism_n so_o they_o will_v be_v uncapable_a of_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o be_v annex_v to_o baptism_n as_o the_o end_n of_o that_o ordinance_n as_o we_o will_v propose_v two_o viz._n the_o wash_n of_o regeneration_n and_o incorporate_n into_o christ_n infant_n be_v capable_a of_o neither_o of_o these_o as_o they_o be_v the_o end_v of_o baptism_n for_o baptism_n be_v but_o demonstrative_a or_o a_o sign_n of_o the_o new_a birth_n because_o god_n will_v have_v those_o that_o come_v to_o be_v baptize_v therein_o to_o testify_v that_o they_o have_v and_o therein_o symbolical_o do_v put_v off_o the_o body_n of_o baptism_n do_v necessary_o presuppose_v a_o be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o tree_n that_o be_v wild_a by_o nature_n or_o out_o of_o our_o degenerate_a estate_n and_o plant_v contrary_a to_o that_o nature_n by_o a_o willing_a resignation_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n to_o christ_n in_o that_o solemn_a ministration_n of_o baptism_n and_o how_o incapable_a infant_n be_v of_o this_o all_o man_n must_v needs_o see_v to_o be_v short_a if_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o find_v true_a by_o experience_n that_o infant_n be_v capable_a of_o any_o good_a or_o that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v wrought_v by_o baptise_v they_o i_o can_v yield_v to_o the_o doctor_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v capable_a of_o none_o of_o the_o end_n of_o baptism_n as_o god_n have_v annex_v they_o to_o baptism_n and_o therefore_o his_o argument_n must_v come_v to_o nothing_o and_o how_o easy_a be_v it_o to_o turn_v this_o argument_n against_o he_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n but_o that_o may_v be_v more_o sit_v in_o another_o place_n but_o the_o doctor_n say_v p._n 28._o that_o infant_n be_v capable_a of_o all_o the_o end_n of_o baptism_n as_o baptism_n be_v institute_v for_o a_o sign_n from_o god_n towards_o we_o to_o assure_v we_o of_o his_o gracious_a favour_n and_o to_o consign_v unto_o we_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n now_o if_o this_o doctrine_n be_v true_a than_o either_o baptism_n be_v a_o sure_a sign_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n to_o all_o infant_n or_o to_o some_o few_o of_o they_o only_o the_o former_a the_o doctor_n will_v not_o allow_v and_o yet_o he_o can_v but_o know_v when_o christ_n say_v teach_v all_o nation_n baptise_v they_o he_o make_v no_o difference_n between_o one_o person_n and_o another_o all_o be_v equal_o to_o be_v teach_v and_o baptize_v equal_o upon_o the_o same_o term_n and_o if_o the_o doctor_n will_v have_v some_o infant_n only_o to_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o but_o some_o only_o have_v right_a to_o baptism_n which_o consign_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n we_o shall_v desire_v he_o to_o prove_v this_o well_o and_o therewithal_o to_o let_v as_o know_v how_o he_o know_v one_o sort_n of_o these_o infant_n from_o another_o he_o say_v indeed_o that_o infant_n may_v be_v member_n of_o a_o church_n their_o childhood_n notwithstanding_o as_o well_o as_o of_o a_o family_n etc._n etc._n but_o to_o be_v of_o a_o family_n be_v equal_o natural_a to_o all_o infant_n so_o that_o if_o this_o argument_n prove_v any_o thing_n it_o prove_v all_o infant_n church-member_n as_o much_o as_o any_o nor_o say_v he_o do_v childhood_n hinder_v or_o incapacitate_v they_o for_o be_v adopt_v the_o child_n of_o god_n more_o than_o the_o child_n of_o any_o other_o person_n but_o god_n be_v not_o like_a man_n to_o adopt_v or_o receive_v into_o favour_n some_o poor_a infant_n and_o let_v all_o the_o rest_n perish_v without_o favour_n we_o affirm_v that_o god_n have_v in_o mercy_n take_v care_n of_o all_o infant_n as_o we_o have_v prove_v but_o this_o do_v not_o teach_v we_o to_o do_v that_o to_o some_o of_o they_o which_o he_o never_o command_v and_o to_o reject_v the_o rest_n as_o if_o god_n have_v no_o mercy_n for_o they_o these_o notion_n be_v so_o partial_a and_o so_o uncertain_a that_o no_o no_o more_o for_o the_o infant_n of_o a_o english_a man_n than_o of_o a_o indian_a god_n may_v be_v as_o kind_a to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o the_o other_o 2._o here_o be_v the_o king_n act_n of_o grace_n peculiar_a to_o this_o child_n and_o to_o no_o other_o 3._o here_o be_v the_o king_n express_a command_n to_o cut_v off_o a_o bit_n of_o the_o child_n flesh_n or_o to_o wash_v it_o with_o water_n and_o thus_o the_o whole_a of_o the_o matter_n be_v beg_v but_o not_o any_o proof_n for_o infant_n baptism_n minister_v from_o hence_o for_o we_o grant_v that_o the_o thing_n here_o suppose_v to_o be_v do_v do_v sufficient_o capacitate_v the_o beggar_n be_v child_n for_o the_o mercy_n and_o favour_n of_o the_o prince_n but_o than_o it_o as_o much_o incapacitates_fw-la other_o child_n to_o who_o the_o king_n have_v extend_v no_o such_o pity_n and_o concern_v who_o he_o have_v give_v no_o such_o order_n for_o shall_v the_o doctor_n now_o without_o any_o order_n from_o the_o king_n fetch_v all_o the_o beggar_n child_n in_o the_o city_n and_o country_n and_o pass_v all_o these_o solemnity_n upon_o they_o that_o they_o all_o may_v be_v receive_v into_o the_o royal_a family_n etc._n etc._n i_o suppose_v he_o will_v have_v but_o little_a thanks_o for_o his_o labour_n even_o so_o to_o cross_v sprinkle_v or_o dip_v all_o the_o infant_n in_o the_o world_n and_o either_o all_o of_o christ_n or_o of_o the_o gospel_n to_o such_o a_o sense_n the_o doctor_n reply_v it_o be_v unreasonable_a to_o presume_v that_o the_o gospel_n will_v not_o extend_v the_o subject_a of_o baptism_n as_o far_o as_o the_o jewish_a church_n extend_v the_o subject_a both_o of_o circumcision_n and_o baptism_n but_o i_o answer_v if_o this_o be_v grant_v yet_o the_o doctor_n gain_v nothing_o for_o 1._o the_o jewish_a church_n have_v no_o baptism_n at_o all_o of_o divine_a institution_n and_o therefore_o can_v not_o extend_v that_o she_o have_v not_o 2._o her_o circumcision_n be_v limit_v to_o abraham_n family_n and_o perhaps_o not_o extend_v to_o much_o above_o a_o three_o part_n of_o that_o family_n neither_o see_v all_o female_n and_o all_o male_n that_o die_v before_o the_o eight_o day_n be_v debar_v of_o it_o whereas_o the_o gospel_n extend_v holy_a baptism_n to_o all_o nation_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n to_o both_o male_a and_o female_a as_o they_o be_v qualify_v
