because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o flat_a opposition_n between_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o man_n that_o they_o can_v both_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o time_n in_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o syllogysmo_n and_o then_o for_o the_o matter_n in_o the_o conclusion_n there_o be_v more_o then_o be_v in_o the_o promise_n for_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n teach_v we_o that_o obedience_n to_o christ_n i_o mean_v in_o that_o sense_n and_o meaning_n have_v be_v by_o his_o own_o word_n to_o have_v cross_v and_o thuart_v his_o own_o knowledge_n and_o to_o have_v speak_v more_o indeed_o then_o truth_n be_v why_o they_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v signify_v and_o set_v out_o unto_o we_o thereby_o sure_o this_o much_o that_o the_o care_n and_o conscience_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o obey_v his_o will_n and_o these_o good_a beginning_n and_o proceed_n that_o they_o have_v make_v therein_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o will_v accept_v they_o as_o absolute_a and_o cover_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n that_o be_v and_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o so_o present_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n neither_o do_v that_o dislike_n i_o that_o one_o answer_v hereto_o namely_o that_o this_o be_v a_o sentence_n or_o say_n of_o the_o gospel_n must_v not_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o perfect_a fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v a_o manner_n of_o speech_n belong_v rather_o to_o the_o law_n then_o to_o the_o gospel_n but_o of_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n or_o as_o we_o haur_n hear_v already_o the_o part_n and_o piece_n of_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o gospel_n these_o term_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n or_o word_n signify_v nothing_o else_o but_o by_o faith_n to_o embrace_v and_o to_o hold_v fast_o the_o truth_n and_o purity_n of_o that_o doctrine_n that_o in_o the_o gospel_n be_v commend_v unto_o we_o concern_v christ_n and_o as_o sound_a member_n of_o the_o church_n to_o profess_v it_o open_o and_o as_o faithful_a
therefore_o or_o fruit_n of_o my_o faith_n will_v i_o gather_v this_o truth_n against_o thou_o to_o the_o stay_n &_o uphold_v of_o my_o own_o heart_n and_o first_o because_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o it_o we_o may_v know_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v give_v unto_o we_o of_o god_n and_o though_o this_o be_v sufficient_a and_o indeed_o great_a than_o all_o exception_n yet_o have_v we_o beside_o the_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n frame_v we_o and_o fashion_v we_o to_o sound_v conversion_n before_o god_n and_o to_o the_o yield_a orbr_v out_o of_o the_o sincere_a fruit_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v to_o say_v good_a work_n which_o can_v but_o assure_v i_o of_o my_o salvation_n and_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o confirm_v i_o in_o the_o certain_a hope_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n peter_n provoke_v unto_o when_o he_o say_v brethren_n g_o we_o diligence_n by_o good_a work_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o may_v be_v idle_a in_o we_o no_o very_o satan_n when_o he_o possess_v man_n will_v not_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v idle_a much_o less_o jesus_n christ_n but_o provoke_v they_o still_o to_o honest_a labour_n and_o good_a work_n for_o by_o his_o spiritual_a power_n he_o manife_v his_o own_o strength_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o our_o manifold_a weakness_n now_o if_o that_o be_v true_a than_o this_o ensue_v thereupon_o that_o i_o be_o christ_n and_o christ_n be_v i_o as_o the_o church_n &_o faithful_a soul_n sing_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o canticle_n yea_o he_o himself_o with_o all_o his_o grace_n and_o merit_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o he_o which_o feel_v and_o find_v these_o effect_n in_o himself_o can_v not_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n infer_v thereupon_o that_o he_o have_v faith_n manner_n be_v true_a as_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o spiritual_a life_n here_o in_o religion_n we_o know_v that_o god_n accept_v both_o the_o whole_a church_n &_o the_o several_a member_n of_o it_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v not_o provide_v always_o that_o that_o which_o they_o have_v they_o have_v it_o from_o he_o or_o else_o how_o can_v the_o church_n &_o member_n of_o it_o rejoice_v or_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v and_o from_o hence_o be_v it_o indeed_o that_o we_o learn_v notwithstanding_o weakness_n &_o want_n either_o in_o whole_a congregation_n or_o several_a member_n not_o to_o break_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o band_n of_o peace_n nor_o to_o forsake_v the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o brethren_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o church_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o n_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o power_n from_o above_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o our_o persuasion_n but_o in_o our_o practice_n not_o forsake_v the_o good_a of_o our_o god_n for_o some_o evil_n or_o corruption_n of_o man_n adjoin_v therewithal_o nor_o yet_o for_o the_o good_n sake_n justify_v or_o approve_v the_o evil_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o we_o have_v further_a prop_n to_o our_o faith_n god_n mercy_n in_o this_o life_n and_o the_o full_a fruition_n of_o the_o lord_n himself_o and_o all_o his_o favour_n in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v through_o christ_n the_o life_n of_o christian_n man_n &_o woman_n here_o upon_o earth_n be_v not_o without_o cause_n right_a honourable_a and_o right_a worshipful_a neither_o yet_o unfite_o compare_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o canonical_a scripture_n to_o a_o continual_a combat_n and_o warfaire_n of_o which_o as_o the_o write_a word_n itself_o in_o the_o sound_a doctrine_n and_o approve_a example_n thereof_o concern_v this_o point_n do_v bear_v faithful_a witness_n so_o if_o god_n will_v give_v we_o grace_n careful_o to_o observe_v either_o other_o man_n or_o ourselves_o in_o such_o sort_n as_o we_o ought_v or_o can_v not_o but_o quick_o find_v good_a warrantise_n for_o it_o in_o the_o world_n likewise_o for_o confirmation_n whereof_o if_o we_o have_v no_o more_o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o dark_a both_o in_o god_n religion_n yea_o and_o in_o man_n reason_n also_o they_o can_v not_o but_o know_v &_o confess_v that_o every_o singular_a virtue_n or_o good_a work_n have_v two_o sin_n set_v against_o it_o the_o one_o as_o disagree_v from_o it_o the_o other_o as_o contrary_a to_o it_o the_o virtue_n or_o good_a work_n as_o we_o now_o call_v it_o here_o be_v trust_v in_o god_n then_o pitiful_a by_o how_o much_o it_o cross_v even_o their_o own_o opinion_n &_o practice_n for_o how_o can_v that_o conceit_n of_o they_o touch_v merit_n before_o christ_n and_o special_o of_o merit_v eternal_a life_n stand_v with_o the_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v see_v that_o merit_n or_o absolute_a obedience_n special_o if_o man_n deal_v with_o one_o that_o be_v just_a as_o christ_n who_o be_v justice_n itself_o must_v needs_o shut_v out_o doubt_v touch_v that_o we_o be_v sure_o we_o have_v deserve_v and_o he_o can_v choose_v but_o of_o justice_n give_v and_o grant_v but_o such_o vain_a fantesy_n must_v they_o fall_v into_o that_o fall_v away_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n and_o will_v lift_v up_o themselves_o against_o christ_n our_o saviour_n that_o so_o refuse_v grace_n offer_v and_o feel_v it_o where_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v they_o may_v vanish_v away_o through_o the_o disquietness_n of_o their_o spirit_n in_o the_o vain_a imagination_n this_o life_n we_o can_v not_o attain_v to_o that_o fullness_n of_o faith_n which_o we_o great_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o and_o though_o through_o god_n goodness_n we_o have_v gain_v somewhat_o yet_o many_o time_n we_o find_v those_o grace_n so_o eclipse_v and_o darken_v in_o we_o that_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o but_o what_o mean_v we_o to_o travail_v in_o the_o strengthen_n of_o these_o point_n which_o in_o everye_o man_n mind_n and_o mouth_n almost_o be_v so_o clear_a and_o usual_a as_o nothing_o more_o the_o thing_n rather_o that_o we_o shall_v strive_v unto_o be_v this_o namely_o that_o sith_o by_o corrupt_a opinion_n we_o be_v or_o may_v be_v daily_o assault_v outward_o and_o by_o satan_n subtle_a suggestion_n and_o our_o own_o curse_a corruption_n we_o be_v continual_o provoke_v inward_o as_o to_o every_o other_o evil_n general_o so_o particular_o to_o this_o sore_a sickness_n of_o our_o soul_n distrust_n or_o doubt_v we_o shall_v in_o the_o they_o that_o belong_v unto_o he_o and_o of_o this_o sort_n be_v their_o imagination_n of_o justification_n before_o god_n by_o work_n of_o the_o pope_n absolute_a supremacy_n &_o authority_n over_o free_a justification_n and_o everlasting_a salvation_n through_o christ_n and_o herein_o i_o have_v purpose_v and_o mind_n through_o god_n goodness_n to_o perform_v and_o observe_v this_o order_n both_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o this_o corrupt_a point_n we_o will_v first_o answer_v the_o place_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o after_o of_o the_o new_a place_n out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n they_o common_o allege_v from_o thence_o such_o place_n as_o
any_o grace_n in_o himself_o from_o god_n but_o also_o to_o speak_v of_o they_o as_o time_n and_o occasion_n serve_v he_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o he_o be_v so_o far_o of_o to_o shut_v god_n out_o from_o order_v and_o dispose_n of_o all_o these_o man_n and_o their_o matter_n that_o he_o take_v it_o rather_o for_o fury_n and_o madness_n in_o man_n to_o think_v otherwise_o special_o see_v that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o weight_n and_o importance_n as_o for_o this_o argument_n if_o we_o know_v or_o understand_v right_o what_o the_o apostle_n mean_v by_o these_o word_n it_o be_v or_o will_v be_v easy_o absolve_v for_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o so_o hard_o twist_v or_o tie_v as_o they_o imagine_v it_o seem_v unto_o man_n that_o as_o verse_n 1._o of_o the_o 4._o chap._n he_o have_v put_v the_o people_n in_o mind_n of_o their_o duty_n towards_o their_o minister_n namely_o that_o though_o they_o may_v not_o account_v they_o lord_n and_o ruler_n yet_o they_o shall_v esteem_v they_o as_o such_o who_o christ_n have_v send_v even_o by_o their_o hand_n to_o deliver_v unto_o they_o the_o treasure_n &_o hide_a secret_n of_o god_n kingdom_n and_o salvation_n so_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o have_v tell_v the_o minister_n &_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v their_o duty_n namely_o that_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o their_o charge_n they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o not_o as_o lord_n but_o as_o servant_n yea_o as_o faithful_a servant_n who_o must_v one_o day_n render_v a_o account_n for_o the_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n to_o god_n and_o because_o he_o have_v set_v forth_o himself_o as_o a_o example_n &_o yet_o many_o of_o the_o corinthian_n regard_v he_o not_o but_o esteem_v he_o as_o a_o base_a person_n he_o do_v verse_n 3._o use_v a_o prevention_n that_o he_o little_a or_o nothing_o at_o all_o stay_v upon_o the_o contrary_a judgement_n that_o they_o have_v of_o he_o and_o lest_o he_o may_v be_v think_v to_o have_v speak_v this_o without_o reason_n he_o show_v diverse_a reason_n why_o he_o esteem_v not_o their_o perverse_a and_o corrupt_a judgement_n concern_v himself_o the_o first_o be_v that_o when_o man_n judge_v in_o these_o matter_n according_a to_o their_o own_o brain_n and_o understanding_n it_o ought_v to_o be_v account_v of_o no_o great_a weight_n then_o if_o ignorant_a man_n shall_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o judge_v of_o learning_n and_o wisdom_n or_o of_o wise_a and_o learned_a man_n &_o this_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o latter_a part_n of_o verse_n 3._o the_o second_o be_v take_v from_o his_o own_o person_n and_o they_o together_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v how_o be_v you_o able_a to_o judge_v what_o manner_n of_o man_n i_o be_o in_o the_o execution_n of_o my_o ministry_n since_o i_o myself_o who_o by_o all_o probability_n shall_v in_o that_o behalf_n better_o know_v myself_o than_o you_o can_v yea_o in_o a_o good_a conscience_n can_v testify_v before_o god_n and_o man_n that_o in_o that_o charge_n i_o have_v in_o some_o good_a measure_n upright_o behave_v myself_o dare_v not_o yet_o therefore_o arrogate_v any_o thing_n to_o myself_o for_o i_o know_v that_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o for_o all_o that_o unblameable_a special_o before_o god_n or_o that_o i_o shall_v please_v and_o flatter_v myself_o as_o you_o do_v and_o this_o be_v the_o argument_n that_o the_o apostle_n use_v in_o this_o 4._o verse_n what_o be_v here_o against_o the_o certainty_n of_o paul_n justification_n before_o god_n or_o the_o assurednes_n of_o his_o heart_n as_o in_o that_o respect_n he_o show_v they_o can_v not_o judge_v he_o because_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a thorough_o and_o exact_o to_o discern_v himself_o must_v he_o therefore_o doubt_v of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o salvation_n before_o god_n sure_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v for_o first_o beside_o that_o god_n and_o man_n differ_v it_o be_v not_o safe_a to_o infer_v upon_o a_o godly_a man_n debase_v of_o himself_o for_o some_o respect_n before_o man_n his_o doubt_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n or_o his_o distrustfulness_n of_o his_o mercy_n towards_o he_o many_o a_o man_n debase_v himself_o before_o god_n and_o yet_o have_v hope_n in_o his_o heart_n yea_o the_o more_o for_o that_o because_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a &_o presumptuous_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o lowly_a and_o meek_a as_o the_o scripture_n say_v and_o though_o we_o shall_v understand_v it_o of_o justification_n before_o god_n yet_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o some_o thing_n in_o this_o for_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o shall_v declare_v it_o for_o sure_o the_o apostle_n here_o doubt_v not_o whether_o the_o newene_n of_o life_n &_o good_a work_n which_o he_o be_v renew_v have_v do_v be_v seal_n &_o pledge_n unto_o he_o of_o this_o that_o he_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n but_o plain_o &_o simple_o deni_v that_o by_o they_o he_o be_v justify_v which_o as_o we_o may_v confirm_v by_o a_o other_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n phil._n 3._o when_o he_o say_v that_o he_o have_v no_o confidence_n in_o the_o flesh_n &_o that_o if_o any_o other_o man_n think_v he_o have_v aught_o whereof_o he_o may_v trust_v in_o the_o flesh_n much_o more_o he_o who_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n be_v unrebukeable_a some_o think_v it_o stand_v upon_o religious_a reason_n because_o all_o our_o righteousness_n be_v as_o filthy_a and_o stain_a clothes_n and_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a seruamt_n so_o many_o defect_n yea_o corruption_n cleave_v unto_o our_o best_a and_o most_o religious_a duty_n as_o we_o perform_v they_o yea_o it_o shall_v seem_v that_o he_o in_o this_o very_a place_n render_v a_o reason_n of_o it_o because_o that_o though_o he_o be_v unblameable_a before_o man_n yet_o he_o can_v not_o by_o his_o work_n stand_v before_o god_n judgement_n or_o god_n himself_o who_o require_v such_o perfect_a obedience_n that_o if_o a_o man_n perform_v not_o all_o thing_n command_v in_o his_o law_n he_o subiect_v he_o to_o the_o curse_n thereof_o or_o as_o saint_n jeame_n say_v chap._n 2._o he_o that_o offend_v in_o one_o be_v guilty_a of_o they_o all_o and_o so_o if_o you_o will_v needs_o understand_v it_o of_o this_o justification_n the_o apostle_n show_v that_o he_o have_v need_n of_o another_o righteousness_n than_o his_o own_o namely_o the_o absolute_a and_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o christ_n the_o mediator_n which_o he_o may_v safe_o oppose_v against_o god_n wrath_n &_o judgement_n &_o be_v thereby_o justify_v and_o accept_v even_o unto_o eternal_a life_n and_o of_o this_o justification_n because_o it_o be_v absolute_a &_o infinite_a he_o never_o speak_v doubtful_o but_o always_o resolute_o as_o rom._n 5._o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n towards_o god_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o again_o roman_n 8_o it_o be_v god_n that_o justifi_v who_o shall_v condemn_v so_o that_o we_o see_v &_o may_v say_v that_o take_v it_o which_o way_n they_o will_v or_o can_v it_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o in_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o spirit_n speak_v that_o they_o will_v have_v it_o or_o prove_v that_o for_o which_o they_o produce_v it_o 5_o a_o five_o argument_n they_o frame_v thus_o we_o be_v uncerten_a say_v they_o concern_v predestination_n or_o election_n that_o be_v as_o they_o themselves_o expound_v it_o or_o must_v expound_v it_o we_o can_v out_o of_o god_n word_n show_v who_o god_n have_v choose_v unto_o himself_o unless_o beside_o and_o without_o the_o word_n
we_o have_v some_o special_a or_o particular_a revelation_n therefore_o we_o be_v uncerten_a and_o by_o consequent_a doubt_n also_o concern_v god_n grace_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n salvation_n etc._n etc._n hereunto_o we_o answer_v that_o we_o deny_v the_o antecedent_n of_o this_o enthymenie_n or_o maim_a syllogism_n and_o we_o have_v good_a reason_n so_o to_o do_v yea_o many_o good_a reason_n indeed_o for_o first_o this_o be_v false_a which_o they_o say_v that_o we_o can_v by_o god_n word_n be_v assure_v of_o predestination_n or_o election_n for_o god_n have_v as_o plain_o and_o plentiful_o propound_v that_o point_n as_o possible_o may_v be_v and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o affirm_v it_o here_o &_o there_o in_o some_o short_a sentence_n but_o by_o large_a deduction_n and_o as_o it_o be_v discourse_n and_o treatise_n make_v of_o purpose_n concern_v it_o as_o may_v appear_v from_o the_o middle_n of_o the_o eight_o chapter_n of_o the_o epistle_n unto_o the_o roman_n to_o the_o end_n of_o 11._o chapter_n of_o the_o same_o epistle_n and_o also_o eph._n 1._o and_o sundry_a other_o place_n but_o if_o they_o will_v say_v they_o mean_v it_o of_o person_n elect_v and_o not_o of_o the_o doctrine_n and_o indeed_o so_o their_o exposition_n seem_v to_o lead_v that_o way_n yet_o than_o we_o tell_v they_o also_o that_o be_v false_a and_o faulty_a as_o the_o former_a for_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n we_o be_v able_a not_o only_o right_o to_o judge_v of_o that_o which_o be_v past_o concern_v the_o rejection_n of_o the_o jew_n the_o election_n of_o the_o gentile_n etc._n etc._n but_o also_o both_o probable_o together_o and_o charitable_o to_o judge_v of_o other_o as_o we_o see_v the_o apostle_n peter_n do_v of_o the_o stranger_n that_o dwell_v here_o and_o there_o 1._o pet._n 1._o verse_n 2_o yea_o and_o of_o some_o natural_a person_n also_o as_o john_n do_v in_o his_o second_o epistle_n to_o the_o elect_a lady_n and_o certain_o also_o to_o determine_v concern_v our_o own_o estate_n that_o way_n whether_o we_o consider_v ourselves_o by_o ourselves_o singular_o or_o as_o we_o be_v join_v with_o the_o rest_n of_o god_n elect_v we_o say_v of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o they_o in_o our_o measure_n touch_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n as_o saint_n john_n say_v for_o himself_o and_o the_o faithful_a in_o that_o behalf_n if_o any_o man_n sin_n we_o have_v a_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n jesus_n christ_n the_o righteouse_a and_o he_o be_v the_o reconciliation_n for_o our_o sin_n etc._n etc._n and_o concern_v god_n love_v towards_o we_o in_o jesus_n christ_n for_o eternal_a life_n as_o saint_n paul_n speak_v of_o himself_o and_o the_o sound_a member_n of_o the_o church_n say_v i_o be_o persuade_v that_o neither_o death_n nor_o life_n nor_o angel_n nor_o principality_n nor_o power_n nor_o thing_n present_a nor_o thing_n to_o come_v nor_o height_n nor_o depth_n nor_o any_o other_o creature_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o separate_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n our_o lord_n and_o in_o another_o place_n we_o know_v that_o if_o our_o earthly_a house_n of_o this_o tabernacle_n be_v destroy_v we_o have_v a_o building_n give_v of_o god_n that_o be_v a_o house_n not_o make_v with_o hand_n but_o eternal_a in_o the_o heaven_n and_o this_o we_o judge_v not_o so_o much_o by_o god_n eternal_a election_n itself_o though_o we_o know_v believe_v &_o persuade_v our_o own_o heart_n that_o such_o a_o thing_n there_o be_v in_o god_n because_o that_o be_v always_o hide_v in_o himself_o even_o as_o we_o may_v say_v in_o the_o bosom_n and_o breast_n of_o his_o everlasting_a free_a knowledge_n though_o by_o many_o good_a mean_n as_o we_o shall_v hear_v anon_o he_o discover_v the_o same_o unto_o we_o but_o by_o certain_a and_o assure_a infallible_a note_n that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o in_o his_o word_n by_o which_o we_o may_v know_v and_o be_v assure_v for_o ourselves_o and_o according_a to_o truth_n and_o charity_n may_v judge_v of_o other_o and_o that_o without_o any_o special_a revelation_n as_o these_o man_n fantasy_n that_o we_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_v as_o if_o god_n give_v we_o a_o effectual_a call_n through_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o make_v we_o comfortable_o to_o feel_v the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o a_o steadfast_a hope_n of_o eternal_a glorification_n we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o of_o our_o election_n as_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o that_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 8._o who_o he_o have_v predestine_v they_o also_o he_o have_v call_v &_o who_o he_o have_v call_v they_o also_o he_o have_v justify_v and_o they_o who_o he_o have_v justify_v they_o he_o have_v also_o glorify_v and_o 2._o timoth._n 1_o god_n have_v save_v we_o and_o call_v we_o with_o a_o holy_a call_n not_o according_a to_o our_o work_n but_o according_a to_o his_o own_o purpose_n and_o grace_n which_o be_v give_v to_o we_o through_o jese_n christ_n before_o the_o world_n be_v as_o also_o if_o he_o give_v we_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o well-doing_n it_o pleadge_v the_o same_o grace_n unto_o we_o according_a to_o which_o saint_n peter_n say_v give_v diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a and_o therefore_o we_o see_v that_o god_n election_n even_o as_o it_o be_v manifest_v unto_o we_o in_o god_n word_n be_v far_o of_o from_o overthrow_v our_o certainty_n &_o hope_n of_o salvation_n that_o look_v upon_o it_o and_o into_o it_o as_o he_o will_v have_v we_o judge_v of_o it_o it_o do_v indeed_o confirm_v and_o establish_v the_o same_o both_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o itself_o because_o so_o it_o be_v always_o sure_a and_o certain_a and_o also_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o faint_a heart_n and_o feeble_a hope_n which_o by_o this_o mean_n be_v uphold_v as_o the_o church_n canticl_n 2._o be_v stay_v with_o flagon_n and_o comfort_v with_o appell_n as_o for_o that_o which_o they_o speak_v of_o particular_a and_o special_a revelation_n it_o be_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o holy_a scripture_n and_o ground_n of_o christian_n religion_n for_o god_n have_v in_o these_o latter_a day_n speak_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o person_n of_o his_o son_n and_o absolute_o and_o full_o reveal_v his_o will_n in_o his_o word_n with_o this_o threaten_n that_o whosoever_o add_v thereunto_o upon_o he_o shall_v be_v pour_v forth_o all_o the_o plague_n write_v therein_o he_o have_v teach_v we_o thereby_o to_o cast_v away_o and_o reject_v as_o devilish_a and_o abominable_a all_o such_o conceit_n beside_o that_o it_o strong_o savour_v of_o anabaptistry_n which_o for_o many_o fond_a fantasy_n of_o their_o own_o have_v nothing_o to_o say_v but_o only_o pretend_v odd_a revelation_n or_o vision_n but_o yet_o our_o adversary_n urge_v this_o point_n further_o and_o say_v that_o man_n must_v beware_v of_o rash_a enter_v into_o handle_v or_o hear_v of_o that_o same_o reverend_a &_o hide_v mystery_n of_o god_n predestination_n and_o who_o will_v not_o say_v so_o as_o well_o as_o they_o but_o let_v we_o see_v whether_o this_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n god_n predestination_n must_v not_o be_v rash_o rush_v into_o either_o for_o hear_v or_o handle_v therefore_o man_n must_v doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n that_o way_n &_o every_o other_o way_n beside_o it_o follow_v not_o no_o more_o than_o this_o the_o sacred_a authority_n of_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n must_v not_o be_v esteem_v or_o violate_v as_o a_o light_a thing_n therefore_o subject_n must_v doubt_v whether_o their_o princess_n favour_n or_o affect_v they_o i_o think_v it_o will_v rather_o follow_v there_o be_v in_o god_n such_o high_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v better_o persuade_v of_o his_o might_n goodwill_n favour_n etc._n etc._n as_o in_o prince_n their_o majesty_n authority_n etc._n etc._n shall_v assure_v their_o subject_n of_o love_n care_n and_o all_o for_o their_o defence_n but_o we_o will_v come_v to_o the_o point_n we_o take_v that_o to_o be_v rash_a presumption_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o this_o mystery_n when_o either_o we_o look_v into_o this_o same_o hide_a &_o secret_a council_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o or_o in_o he_o alone_o separate_v from_o those_o testimony_n and_o token_n that_o he_o have_v give_v we_o to_o discern_v it_o by_o or_o when_o we_o will_v be_v more_o curious_a in_o it_o than_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o manifest_v in_o his_o word_n now_o that_o this_o be_v to_o be_v avoid_v and_o to_o be_v take_v heed_n of_o as_o a_o high_a sin_n &_o the_o infection_n of_o our_o soul_n every_o man_n will_v confess_v because_o it_o be_v to_o be_v wise_a above_o measure_n &_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o god_n will_v not_o have_v
condemn_v our_o own_o deed_n and_o work_n and_o renounce_v they_o utter_o to_o rest_n and_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n promise_v unto_o we_o for_o christ_n our_o saviour_n his_o sake_n and_o always_o both_o in_o mind_n and_o mouth_n to_o have_v that_o worthy_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n rise_v with_o we_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n o_o lord_n for_o then_o no_o flesh_n shall_v be_v righteouse_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o just_a or_o justify_v for_o all_o that_o one_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n as_o they_o suppose_v but_o arrogancy_n and_o indeed_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o heavenly_a promise_n not_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o or_o not_o to_o believe_v these_o sweet_a promise_n and_o therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n 1._o john_n 5.10_o and_o we_o may_v see_v a_o memorable_a example_n of_o it_o in_o ahaz_n isaiah_n 7._o who_o refuse_v a_o sign_n give_v unto_o he_o from_o god_n but_o they_o press_v this_o further_a &_o say_v it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o humility_n to_o acknowledge_v our_o infirmity_n and_o sin_n and_o who_o will_v deny_v that_o that_o have_v any_o fault_n or_o savour_n in_o he_o of_o godliness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n who_o know_v not_o that_o humility_n and_o doubt_v differ_v as_o much_o as_o vice_n &_o virtue_n or_o what_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v mad_a not_o only_o without_o reason_n but_o against_o godliness_n will_v suppose_v that_o our_o true_a humility_n shall_v destroy_v confidence_n boldness_n or_o faith_n concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n since_o our_o humility_n be_v as_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o faith_n if_o man_n do_v sound_o understand_v what_o humility_n be_v they_o will_v doubtless_o be_v of_o another_o mind_n they_o conclude_v so_o this_o be_v humility_n not_o only_o true_o to_o fear_n god_n as_o a_o judge_n and_o so_o to_o acknowledge_v in_o his_o sight_n our_o sin_n and_o infirmity_n but_o also_o to_o fly_v unto_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o stay_v in_o his_o all_o sufficient_a satisfaction_n do_v this_o overthrow_n a_o poor_a man_n poverty_n that_o he_o beg_v a_o alm_n for_o god_n sake_n as_o we_o say_v or_o do_v this_o destroy_v a_o weak_a man_n weakness_n that_o he_o seek_v for_o shelter_n and_o defence_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o strong_a or_o do_v this_o take_v away_o a_o sick_a man_n sickness_n that_o he_o lay_v it_o open_a to_o the_o physician_n and_o require_v medicine_n no_o very_o but_o rather_o argue_v poverty_n weakness_n sickness_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o do_v our_o humility_n but_o let_v we_o go_v forward_o 9_o the_o nine_o argument_n be_v this_o where_o there_o be_v unworthiness_n there_o can_v be_v assurance_n of_o god_n grace_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o salvation_n but_o still_o there_o must_v be_v doubt_v but_o in_o they_o that_o be_v turn_v to_o god_n there_o be_v great_a unworthiness_n while_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o have_v sufficient_o and_o worthy_o prepare_v themselves_o and_o perform_v all_o the_o covenant_n and_o condition_n that_o god_n have_v prescribe_v therefore_o etc._n etc._n the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v very_o false_a because_o the_o behold_n or_o feel_v of_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n do_v no_o more_o work_n doubt_v much_o less_o distrustfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n people_n then_o feel_v of_o outward_a want_n make_v natural_a man_n careless_a of_o a_o supply_n it_o be_v a_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o our_o own_o unworthiness_n yea_o such_o a_o grace_n as_o god_n only_o bestow_v upon_o his_o own_o child_n that_o so_o in_o the_o behold_n and_o sight_n thereof_o they_o may_v more_o earnest_o seek_v after_o and_o be_v more_o fruitful_o make_v partaker_n of_o the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a of_o the_o world_n be_v either_o cease_v with_o benumbedness_n and_o senslesness_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o good_a reason_n thereof_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o sin_n or_o else_o see_v it_o in_o judgement_n and_o condemnation_n and_o good_a reason_n of_o it_o also_o because_o rather_o they_o have_v make_v no_o account_n to_o profit_v by_o god_n mercy_n but_o to_o abuse_v they_o rather_o to_o licentiousness_n and_o sin_n and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o assure_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n namely_o that_o the_o feel_n of_o the_o indignity_n of_o god_n people_n have_v neither_o wrought_v doubt_v in_o themselves_o nor_o cause_v god_n the_o less_o but_o more_o rather_o to_o esteem_v they_o we_o have_v many_o memorable_a example_n but_o for_o the_o present_a we_o will_v content_v ourselves_o with_o one_o out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o another_o out_o of_o the_o new_a that_o so_o see_v the_o consent_n of_o scripture_n and_o the_o confirmitie_n of_o this_o truth_n in_o all_o age_n sundry_a place_n of_o scripture_n and_o namely_o jame_v 1._o where_o the_o spirit_n say_v brethren_n count_v it_o exceed_a joy_n when_o you_o fall_v into_o diverse_a temptation_n know_v that_o the_o try_v of_o your_o faith_n bring_v forth_o patience_n &c_n &c_n or_o else_o correct_v we_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o perish_v with_o the_o wicked_a world_n but_o rather_o that_o by_o this_o mean_v we_o may_v learn_v more_o &_o more_o to_o hate_v sin_n see_v we_o be_v punish_v for_o it_o or_o to_o contemn_v the_o world_n whereunto_o otherwise_o happy_o we_o may_v be_v to_o fast_o
