for_o the_o person_n salute_v here_o then_o be_v many_o kind_n of_o salutation_n censure_v first_o the_o profane_a salutation_n of_o swear_v swaggerer_n profane_a not_o profane_a and_o rude_a and_o ridiculous_a and_o herein_o consist_v all_o their_o grace_n of_o their_o greeting_n in_o court_v and_o congey_v and_o duck_v and_o such_o other_o gesture_n but_o that_o which_o be_v the_o very_a pith_n and_o marrow_n of_o a_o christian_a salutation_n the_o lift_v up_o of_o the_o heart_n to_o god_n in_o desire_v the_o welfare_n of_o those_o they_o salute_v be_v whole_o want_v gesture_n in_o salute_v be_v good_a and_o commendable_a so_o they_o may_v stand_v with_o comeliness_n and_o the_o simplicity_n of_o christianity_n but_o this_o be_v a_o fault_n even_o in_o many_o who_o yet_o be_v not_o so_o fond_a and_o so_o full_a of_o affectation_n in_o their_o salutation_n as_o other_o that_o in_o salute_v their_o brethren_n with_o those_o good_a and_o holy_a form_n in_o common_a use_n as_o god_n be_v with_o you_o god_n save_v you_o etc._n etc._n they_o take_v the_o holy_a name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a not_o have_v their_o heart_n lift_v up_o to_o god_n who_o name_n they_o call_v upon_o but_o only_o speak_v of_o custom_n and_o so_o not_o mind_v what_o they_o say_v a_o fault_n in_o most_o and_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o humiliation_n unto_o we_o as_o be_v a_o argument_n both_o of_o the_o want_n of_o fear_n to_o god_n and_o love_n to_o our_o neighbour_n salutation_n be_v prayer_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v with_o all_o reverence_n be_v think_v upon_o when_o they_o be_v use_v some_o hence_o take_v occasion_n to_o neglect_v this_o duty_n because_o they_o be_v prayer_n and_o they_o think_v it_o not_o lawful_a to_o wish_v well_o in_o prayer_n to_o every_o one_o we_o meet_v who_o sometime_o may_v haply_o be_v go_v about_o some_o wicked_a enterprise_n but_o beside_o that_o charity_n bid_v we_o to_o think_v and_o hope_v the_o best_a in_o matter_n of_o uncertainty_n they_o shall_v have_v remember_v that_o of_o our_o saviour_n luke_n 10._o into_o whatsoever_o house_n you_o go_v say_v peace_n be_v unto_o this_o the_o former_a of_o they_o be_v grace_n this_o word_n grace_n often_o be_v take_v for_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o a_o metonymy_n of_o the_o efficient_a because_o they_o come_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o grace_n and_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n as_o john_n 1._o 16._o and_o of_o his_o fullness_n have_v we_o all_o receive_a take_v grace_n how_o take_v grace_n upon_o grace_n and_o verse_n 17._o grace_n and_o truth_n come_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o 2._o cor._n 12._o my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o but_o this_o grace_n be_v not_o here_o principal_o mean_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n therefore_o there_o be_v a_o second_o and_o that_o more_o proper_a signification_n of_o this_o word_n grace_n for_o the_o favour_n and_o good_a will_n of_o god_n as_o ephes_n 2._o 8._o for_o by_o grace_n be_v you_o save_v through_o faith_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o here_o the_o apostle_n wish_v to_o philemon_z now_o this_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v twofold_a first_o that_o favour_n of_o god_n whereby_o he_o purpose_v love_n two_o degree_n of_o god_n love_n to_o make_v we_o capable_a of_o his_o favour_n and_o fit_a to_o be_v favour_v of_o he_o when_o as_o in_o ourselves_o there_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o favour_n but_o only_o of_o displeasure_n the_o give_v of_o christ_n unto_o we_o and_o all_o the_o benefit_n which_o we_o receive_v in_o christ_n be_v make_v fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o this_o favour_n rom_n 5._o 15._o much_o more_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o gift_n by_o grace_n have_v abound_v to_o many_o the_o gift_n by_o grace_n be_v justification_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n a_o man_n will_v think_v we_o can_v not_o be_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n till_o christ_n have_v reconcile_v us._n i_o but_o that_o christ_n be_v give_v unto_o we_o to_o be_v our_o reconciler_n whence_o come_v this_o but_o of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n namely_o this_o first_o kind_n of_o favour_n whereby_o christ_n die_v for_o we_o and_o christ_n himself_o joh._n 3._o 16._o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o such_o a_o kind_n of_o love_n and_o favour_n whereby_o he_o be_v willing_a as_o it_o be_v and_o desirous_a to_o favour_v we_o and_o not_o otherwise_o for_o how_o then_o can_v we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n by_o christ_n if_o before_o we_o be_v actual_o in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o of_o this_o grace_n our_o election_n be_v make_v a_o fruit_n ephes_n 1._o 5_o 6._o who_o have_v predestinate_v we_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o grace_n whereby_o he_o have_v free_o make_v we_o accept_v in_o his_o belove_a that_o be_v whereby_o he_o have_v predestinate_v us._n second_o there_o be_v another_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n when_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o favour_v we_o and_o a_o free_a disposition_n to_o do_v we_o good_a and_o because_o it_o will_v not_o stand_v with_o his_o justice_n to_o favour_v the_o vile_a and_o abominable_a have_v further_o of_o his_o own_o good_a pleasure_n in_o christ_n fit_v we_o for_o his_o favour_n he_o do_v now_o take_v a_o singular_a pleasure_n and_o delight_n in_o us._n so_o then_o there_o be_v a_o favour_n whereby_o god_n make_v we_o as_o i_o may_v say_v favourable_a such_o as_o may_v be_v favour_v and_o it_o be_v the_o description_n of_o the_o apostle_n himself_o ephes_n 1._o 6._o by_o the_o which_o grace_n he_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v and_o there_o be_v a_o further_a favour_n whereby_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v that_o be_v such_o as_o may_v be_v accept_v he_o do_v indeed_o accept_v we_o and_o be_v exceed_o well_o please_v with_o us._n this_o may_v be_v call_v the_o favour_n of_o complacency_n
and_o this_o be_v that_o favour_n which_o so_o often_o in_o the_o psalm_n be_v call_v the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n the_o consideration_n of_o these_o distinct_a not_o kind_n but_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o hereby_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v both_o the_o cause_n and_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n a_o cause_n of_o this_o latter_a favour_n a_o effect_n of_o the_o former_a hereby_o also_o we_o see_v how_o both_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v merit_v by_o christ_n for_o we_o and_o yet_o free_a because_o it_o be_v of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n to_o vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o procure_n of_o his_o favour_n now_o in_o this_o place_n both_o these_o favour_n be_v mean_v so_o that_o the_o full_a meaning_n of_o the_o apostle_n say_v grace_n be_v unto_o you_o from_o god_n be_v this_o the_o lord_n grant_v unto_o you_o his_o favour_n both_o that_o favour_n whereby_o you_o may_v be_v make_v capable_a of_o his_o favour_n in_o be_v justify_v through_o christ_n as_o also_o that_o sweet_a acceptation_n of_o you_o be_v thus_o fit_v for_o his_o favour_n what_o need_v the_o apostle_n wish_v unto_o they_o the_o first_o object_n favour_n since_o that_o be_v grant_v unto_o they_o from_o everlasting_a as_o also_o some_o fruit_n thereof_o namely_o their_o election_n in_o christ_n and_o in_o time_n the_o other_o fruit_n thereof_o their_o engraft_v into_o christ_n justification_n and_o adoption_n though_o god_n have_v vouchsafe_v they_o this_o favour_n ans_fw-fr before_o all_o world_n and_o they_o by_o it_o be_v make_v fit_a to_o be_v entertain_v into_o his_o special_a favour_n yet_o paul_n may_v pray_v that_o god_n will_v continue_v it_o still_o towards_o they_o for_o as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o those_o good_a thing_n which_o make_v we_o acceptable_a to_o god_n so_o likewise_o be_v it_o the_o cause_n of_o the_o continuance_n of_o they_o namely_o of_o christ_n and_o all_o his_o blessing_n and_o so_o consequent_o of_o our_o acceptation_n for_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o forfeit_v christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n daily_o and_o so_o to_o lose_v all_o that_o grace_n which_o by_o his_o mean_n we_o have_v with_o god_n therefore_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o still_o we_o shall_v require_v that_o first_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o hold_v out_o and_o be_v continue_v towards_o we_o for_o the_o continuation_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n whatsoever_o which_o depend_v upon_o it_o and_o in_o truth_n this_o second_o favour_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o former_a he_o that_o desire_v the_o latter_a must_v needs_o withal_o desire_v the_o former_a but_o as_o i_o take_v it_o both_o here_o and_o elsewhere_o the_o word_n grace_n especial_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o the_o latter_a degree_n of_o god_n favour_n which_o be_v the_o most_o proper_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n as_o when_o we_o say_v he_o be_v in_o great_a grace_n with_o the_o king_n and_o that_o which_o the_o apostle_n add_v from_o jesus_n christ_n declare_v the_o same_o who_o be_v the_o effecter_n of_o this_o second_o favour_n but_o a_o effect_n of_o the_o former_a but_o yet_o the_o other_o grace_n be_v always_o necessary_o to_o be_v include_v first_o then_o the_o apostle_n pray_v for_o these_o to_o who_o he_o write_v that_o god_n will_v lift_v up_o the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n upon_o they_o and_o second_o for_o that_o purpose_n because_o the_o pure_a eye_n of_o god_n can_v behold_v iniquity_n such_o as_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o that_o he_o will_v of_o his_o free_a favour_n work_v and_o continue_v that_o in_o they_o which_o may_v draw_v his_o sweet_a eye_n towards_o they_o and_o cause_v he_o to_o cast_v a_o gracious_a and_o amiable_a aspect_n upon_o they_o first_o from_o hence_o let_v we_o observe_v the_o chief_a and_o doct._n 1_v principall_a cause_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o we_o namely_o favour_n the_o cause_n of_o god_n favour_n his_o own_o free_a will_n and_o gracious_a disposition_n to_o favour_n us._n for_o though_o indeed_o christ_n obedience_n do_v merit_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o we_o yet_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o we_o to_o merit_v at_o god_n hand_n that_o so_o precious_a a_o treasure_n but_o it_o be_v a_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n grace_n as_o the_o apostle_n notable_o show_v rom._n 8._o who_o have_v give_v we_o his_o own_o son_n the_o word_n signify_v to_o give_v gratis_o and_o free_o so_o then_o god_n grace_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o christ_n his_o be_v give_v it_o be_v also_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o acceptance_n which_o we_o find_v with_o he_o through_o christ_n for_o that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o cause_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o thing_n cause_v and_o therefore_o grace_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v god_n own_o gracious_a inclination_n of_o his_o will_n towards_o we_o to_o do_v good_a to_o we_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o so_o great_a grace_n which_o we_o find_v in_o his_o eye_n and_o herein_o differ_v god_n favour_n from_o man_n man_n favour_n though_o it_o make_v he_o do_v good_a to_o the_o party_n favour_v yet_o first_o of_o all_o it_o presuppose_v some_o good_a in_o the_o man_n favour_v a_o attractive_a and_o drawer_n of_o this_o his_o favour_n now_o god_n favour_n as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n we_o daily_o receive_v so_o be_v it_o also_o the_o cause_n of_o itself_o as_o we_o show_v and_o therefore_o it_o do_v not_o presuppose_v any_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o before_o but_o bring_v with_o it_o that_o good_a thing_n namely_o christ_n jesus_n which_o must_v uphold_v and_o maintain_v this_o his_o favour_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v to_o humble_v we_o in_o ourselves_o as_o have_v not_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o goodness_n in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o ascribe_v all_o praise_n and_o glory_n in_o every_o thing_n to_o god_n who_o grace_n be_v the_o fountain_n and_o foundation_n of_o all_o good_a thing_n whatsoever_o let_v no_o man_n then_o talk_v of_o christ_n merit_n and_o therefore_o in_o this_o regard_n claim_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o life_n eternal_a as_o his_o due_n from_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o we_o have_v christ_n merit_n impute_v unto_o we_o and_o the_o imputation_n of_o they_o daily_o continue_v but_o of_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o so_o for_o all_o this_o the_o apostle_n rom._n 3._o say_v we_o be_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n though_o we_o be_v clothe_v with_o bracelet_n jewel_n and_o ornament_n where_o withal_o god_n holy_a eye_n be_v affect_v ezech._n 16._o yet_o have_v we_o no_o cause_n to_o be_v proud_a for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o put_v upon_o we_o these_o robe_n when_o we_o be_v in_o our_o rag_n and_o filthy_a nastiness_n and_o so_o he_o do_v but_o love_v his_o own_o beauty_n in_o us._n second_o in_o the_o example_n of_o paul_n in_o all_o his_o salutation_n doct._n 2_o wish_v first_o of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v the_o favour_n thing_n the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o be_v desire_v above_o all_o thing_n of_o god_n we_o learn_v what_o it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v chief_o and_o principal_o desire_v either_o for_o ourselves_o or_o other_o our_o child_n wife_n kindred_n father_n and_o mother_n acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n viz._n this_o grace_n of_o s._n paul_n psal_n 4._o 6._o many_o say_v who_o will_v show_v we_o any_o good_a lord_n lift_v thou_o up_o the_o light_n of_o thy_o countenance_n and_o abraham_n wish_n for_o ishmael_n our_o love_n next_o to_o christ_n unto_o the_o saint_n this_o doctrine_n that_o our_o love_n must_v chief_o answ_n respect_v the_o saint_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o a_o even_a comparison_n all_o saint_n be_v not_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o all_o that_o be_v none_o but_o those_o only_a that_o may_v equal_o be_v compare_v with_o they_o as_o those_o of_o my_o own_o which_o be_v godly_a must_v be_v love_v more_o than_o those_o of_o my_o own_o which_o be_v not_o i_o must_v love_v all_o my_o child_n servant_n kinsfolk_n but_o special_o those_o that_o be_v saint_n but_o in_o a_o unequal_a comparison_n it_o hold_v not_o a_o ungodly_a son_n wife_n brother_n etc._n etc._n be_v to_o be_v respect_v before_o a_o godly_a friend_n that_o be_v further_o off_o from_o i_o and_o not_o so_o near_o in_o blood_n again_o though_o natural_a affection_n may_v be_v great_a in_o we_o towards_o our_o kinsfolk_n wicked_a then_o towards_o stranger_n godly_a yet_o true_a christian_a love_n belong_v to_o the_o faithful_a without_o any_o carnal_a respect_n neither_o must_v we_o measure_v it_o so_o much_o by_o outward_a effect_n as_o by_o the_o inward_a affection_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v a_o spiritual_a love_n and_o be_v special_o see_v in_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o in_o the_o holy_a cleave_v of_o heart_n together_o in_o mutual_a prayer_n consolation_n and_o heavenly_a conference_n and_o thus_o i_o may_v love_v my_o christian_a friend_n more_o than_o my_o ungodly_a wife_n or_o child_n though_o in_o nourish_v of_o they_o i_o suffer_v they_o to_o perish_v with_o famine_n as_o not_o have_v sufficient_a to_o relieve_v both_o four_o mark_v the_o object_n of_o philemon_n doct._n 4_o love_n be_v all_z the_o saint_n he_o that_o love_v love_v all_o the_o saint_n must_v be_v love_v one_o saint_n true_o and_o because_o he_o be_v a_o saint_n must_v needs_o love_v all_o though_o there_o be_v diverse_a degree_n of_o our_o love_n to_o the_o saint_n as_o there_o be_v also_o of_o their_o sanctimony_n so_o christ_n love_v john_n above_o the_o other_o disciple_n but_o if_o we_o love_v but_o one_o saint_n because_o of_o his_o grace_n we_o must_v needs_o carry_v the_o same_o mind_n to_o all_o otherwise_o if_o love_v one_o we_o hate_v another_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n we_o love_v he_o not_o because_o he_o be_v a_o saint_n for_o than_o we_o shall_v love_v the_o other_o also_o but_o for_o other_o respect_n here_o then_o be_v condemn_v that_o partiality_n which_o james_n tax_v james_n 2._o five_o observe_v that_o the_o christian_n with_o doct._n 5_o
