their_o garland_n and_o their_o best_a portion_n it_o be_v most_o worthy_o to_o be_v bewail_v which_o testify_v too_o clear_o that_o either_o there_o be_v many_o enemy_n of_o the_o gospel_n among_o stock_n and_o reproach_n to_o such_o as_o have_v no_o more_o than_o a_o bare_a name_n or_o vain_a opinion_n thereof_o even_o to_o many_o of_o the_o professor_n themselves_o as_o to_o the_o rest_n of_o that_o they_o be_v the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o without_o waver_v can_v be_v sufficient_o and_o clear_o enough_o lay_v forth_o by_o the_o skilful_a teacher_n seldom_o teach_v neither_o if_o it_o can_v be_v the_o hearer_n able_a to_o conceive_v and_o understand_v 8.11_o remember_v and_o be_v familiar_o acquaint_v with_o it_o so_o as_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o try_v themselves_o and_o to_o prove_v their_o estate_n to_o be_v good_a all_o which_o yet_o be_v meet_v and_o necessary_a for_o though_o i_o know_v that_o the_o ground_n and_o general_a truth_n be_v few_o upon_o which_o this_o one_o they_o as_o their_o case_n require_v and_o first_o they_o must_v be_v persuade_v that_o they_o be_v not_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n neither_o be_v his_o anger_n kindle_v against_o they_o for_o all_o their_o fear_n that_o oppress_v they_o when_o their_o estate_n be_v to_o their_o own_o feel_n even_o at_o the_o worst_a because_o they_o have_v not_o sin_v against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o sin_n only_o be_v able_a to_o shut_v they_o out_o from_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o yet_o many_o of_o they_o in_o their_o temptation_n do_v think_v that_o they_o have_v and_o to_o prove_v that_o they_o have_v not_o commit_v that_o sin_n it_o may_v appear_v by_o this_o that_o they_o have_v not_o malicious_o set_v themselves_o against_o the_o truth_n and_o gospel_n of_o god_n nor_o wilful_o persecute_v it_o against_o their_o conscience_n but_o do_v embrace_v it_o hearty_o and_o love_v the_o same_o which_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o deny_v but_o it_o be_v a_o mere_a delusion_n and_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n which_o hold_v they_o in_o this_o terror_n and_o bondage_n which_o time_n will_v discover_v and_o lay_v open_a as_o they_o themselves_o shall_v hereafter_o most_o plain_o see_v and_o discern_v which_o many_o such_o as_o they_o be_v in_o the_o like_a case_n have_v find_v in_o the_o end_n and_o though_o it_o be_v a_o temptation_n of_o the_o enemy_n purpose_v of_o god_n for_o the_o first_o of_o these_o two_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o he_o after_o a_o personal_a manner_n to_o the_o soul_n though_o not_o in_o bodily_a shape_n to_o the_o eye_n without_o mean_n of_o outward_a thing_n tempt_v we_o in_o the_o very_a secret_a thought_n of_o our_o heart_n for_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n and_o by_o creation_n most_o excellent_a have_v access_n unto_o our_o spirit_n to_o trouble_v they_o and_o disorder_v all_o their_o action_n as_o we_o see_v corporal_a creature_n with_o corporal_a and_o bodily_a force_n to_o annoy_v one_o another_o and_o as_o he_o be_v a_o spirit_n so_o the_o long_a experience_n which_o he_o have_v of_o our_o corruption_n and_o misery_n from_o age_n to_o age_n give_v he_o knowledge_n of_o our_o mind_n more_o perfect_o who_o gather_v it_o by_o the_o least_o sign_n of_o our_o inclination_n and_o will_n not_o that_o he_o know_v our_o heart_n for_o that_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n only_o but_o through_o his_o long_a acquaintance_n with_o our_o nature_n he_o conceive_v our_o intent_n and_o purpose_n and_o that_o oftentimes_o without_o signification_n either_o of_o speech_n or_o gesture_n and_o thus_o he_o be_v able_a to_o discover_v the_o vanity_n of_o our_o mind_n by_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o universal_a corruption_n as_o he_o see_v occasion_n and_o whereto_o we_o most_o incline_v he_o suggest_v his_o temptation_n to_o sin_n and_o disobedience_n now_o if_o to_o these_o two_o we_o add_v his_o malice_n for_o he_o be_v not_o call_v the_o envious_a man_n for_o naught_o and_o his_o unsearchable_a subtlety_n and_o exceed_a strength_n property_n and_o that_o which_o be_v great_a than_o all_o the_o rest_n that_o he_o most_o hurt_v when_o it_o least_o appear_v when_o we_o least_o suspect_v it_o many_o be_v deceive_v this_o way_n partly_o for_o want_v of_o knowledge_n and_o ground_a judgement_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o partly_o while_o they_o have_v through_o long_a custom_n be_v detain_v effectual_a though_o weak_a and_o feeble_a for_o upon_o these_o the_o matter_n depend_v and_o if_o they_o can_v be_v certify_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n since_o and_o through_o their_o hear_n of_o his_o gospel_n preach_v unto_o they_o have_v shed_v such_o grace_n into_o their_o heart_n as_o to_o make_v they_o partaker_n of_o the_o fruit_n thereof_o they_o shall_v not_o need_v to_o be_v trouble_v about_o the_o other_o and_o if_o they_o contrariwise_o find_v that_o they_o do_v yet_o want_v these_o they_o must_v full_o purpose_v to_o seek_v for_o they_o and_o not_o to_o feed_v principal_o and_o most_o chief_o i_o have_v do_v it_o for_o the_o uphold_v &_o comfort_n of_o god_n weak_a servant_n who_o may_v see_v he_o most_o love_a and_o gracious_a unto_o they_o even_o in_o that_o i_o mean_v their_o abasement_n and_o humiliation_n which_o they_o sometime_o think_v to_o be_v their_o utter_a and_o extreme_a misery_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o second_o point_n of_o the_o second_o part_n or_o general_a head_n namely_o of_o the_o stay_n of_o the_o weak_a christian_n and_o how_o they_o differ_v from_o unbeliever_n thus_o i_o have_v not_o as_o i_o will_v but_o as_o i_o can_v head_n set_v down_o my_o meditation_n upon_o this_o first_o point_n to_o show_v who_o be_v the_o true_a people_n of_o god_n and_o give_v occasion_n to_o many_o who_o have_v little_a to_o say_v for_o themselves_o why_o they_o shall_v claim_v any_o right_a or_o title_n in_o that_o great_a purchase_n to_o consider_v of_o their_o estate_n more_o deep_o and_o serious_o than_o they_o have_v do_v if_o these_o who_o be_v almost_o christian_n and_o as_o i_o may_v say_v not_o far_o from_o eternal_a life_n be_v many_o of_o they_o usual_a hearer_n of_o sermon_n will_v inquire_v about_o their_o for_o their_o good_a which_o i_o hearty_o desire_v and_o pray_v for_o this_o i_o beseech_v to_o hear_v i_o in_o what_o wisdom_n shall_v they_o show_v to_o be_v careless_a in_o so_o weighty_a a_o matter_n as_o this_o be_v concern_v their_o salvation_n and_o that_o their_o care_n in_o matter_n transitory_a can_v never_o be_v enough_o or_o what_o sound_a comfort_n do_v they_o look_v for_o while_o they_o rest_v but_o in_o uncertainty_n about_o the_o assurance_n thereof_o which_o yet_o to_o miss_v and_o go_v without_o be_v their_o utter_a and_o perpetual_a desolation_n but_o they_o hope_v they_o be_v in_o good_a case_n and_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o estate_n of_o grace_n i_o be_o far_o from_o envy_v it_o they_o i_o will_v to_o god_n that_o i_o can_v hope_v so_o too_o but_o what_o evidence_n or_o proof_n have_v they_o of_o it_o they_o can_v answer_v none_o but_o this_o that_o they_o profess_v christ_n and_o love_v the_o gospel_n and_o contemn_v popery_n they_o hear_v sermon_n oft_o and_o think_v not_o well_o of_o they_o who_o do_v not_o so_o some_o of_o the_o forward_a sort_n do_v think_v very_o sometime_o that_o they_o believe_v and_o joy_n therein_o and_o sometime_o weep_v at_o a_o sermon_n but_o this_o be_v their_o anchor_n that_o they_o hold_v themselves_o by_o long_o after_o when_o they_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v of_o such_o time_n and_o action_n do_v in_o they_o but_o when_o they_o have_v be_v at_o the_o best_a have_v they_o then_o put_v forth_o themselves_o a_o little_a further_o to_o demand_v be_v these_o thing_n sufficient_a mark_n and_o testimony_n of_o our_o salvation_n or_o if_o they_o be_v not_o do_v they_o inquire_v what_o be_v and_o do_v they_o not_o cease_v try_v their_o state_n till_o they_o can_v prove_v it_o to_o be_v good_a indeed_o and_o until_o they_o find_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n that_o can_v deceive_v they_o nay_o rather_o they_o come_v not_o to_o this_o at_o all_o that_o they_o can_v apply_v christ_n to_o they_o that_o study_n be_v utter_o unwelcome_a to_o they_o and_o unsavourie_a they_o can_v do_v any_o thing_n but_o that_o and_o why_o so_o very_o even_o to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v out_o of_o the_o way_n again_o therefore_o not_o only_o these_o which_o be_v evil_a of_o themselves_o must_v grow_v loathsome_a to_o they_o but_o they_o must_v also_o be_v sober_a and_o moderate_v sometime_o hold_v and_o embrace_v after_o hear_v public_o or_o any_o such_o like_a mean_n enjoy_v of_o they_o they_o do_v soon_o i_o say_v let_v they_o slip_v fearful_a unless_o they_o can_v bring_v themselves_o to_o review_v and_o call_v they_o to_o mind_n usual_o yea_o and_o further_o unless_o they_o do_v provide_v to_o help_v their_o feebleness_n of_o heart_n and_o memory_n as_o they_o shall_v us._n we_o will_v willing_o please_v ourselves_o in_o some_o unlawful_a liberty_n when_o we_o have_v please_v god_n in_o some_o duty_n but_o a_o wise_a man_n will_v keep_v well_o while_o he_o be_v well_o and_o not_o trouble_v himself_o with_o a_o ill_a conscience_n when_o god_n do_v not_o trouble_v he_o with_o hard_a affliction_n see_v it_o be_v write_v hebr._n 3.12_o and_o 1._o cor._n 10.31_o they_o not_o for_o use_v psalm_n 87.3_o and_o 84.11.12_o one_o day_n in_o thy_o house_n o_o god_n be_v better_a than_o a_o thousand_o elsewhere_o and_o psalm_n 4.8_o try_v out_o therefore_o the_o truth_n of_o they_o when_o we_o become_v to_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o serve_v god_n with_o much_o travail_n yet_o we_o abide_v hardly_o and_o a_o short_a time_n therein_o at_o least_o much_o breastplate_n of_o righteousness_n that_o i_o may_v not_o fear_v any_o danger_n by_o false_a accusation_n and_o malicious_a tongue_n but_o may_v bring_v forth_o plentiful_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n in_o all_o my_o deal_n and_o my_o innocence_n may_v shine_v as_o light_v in_o the_o world_n that_o my_o knowledge_n by_o thy_o word_n may_v direct_v i_o to_o discern_v good_a from_o evil_n truth_n from_o error_n and_o so_o may_v keep_v my_o foot_n from_o fall_v by_o the_o deceiptfulnesse_n of_o sin_n that_o i_o be_v shod_a with_o the_o shoe_n of_o peace_n may_v not_o only_o have_v peace_n of_o mind_n in_o the_o time_n of_o health_n and_o prosperity_n but_o be_v prepare_v thereby_o to_o go_v on_o my_o journey_n of_o this_o life_n ever_o in_o sickness_n and_o tribulation_n also_o and_o last_o that_o i_o may_v be_v so_o gird_v about_o with_o sincerity_n and_o integrity_n that_o i_o may_v be_v far_o from_o all_o hollowness_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o may_v carry_v myself_o in_o plainness_n and_o simplicity_n throughout_o and_o that_o behaviour_n in_o my_o heart_n or_o life_n which_o will_v not_o stand_v with_o this_o course_n let_v be_v as_o i_o have_v pray_v as_o superfluous_a rubbish_n cut_v off_o and_o cast_v from_o i_o and_o let_v i_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o it_o that_o my_o life_n may_v be_v free_a from_o dangerous_a and_o reproachful_a evil_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o thou_o know_v expedient_a for_o i_o bodily_a or_o spiritual_a in_o this_o life_n or_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v grant_v it_o to_o i_o for_o christ_n sake_n to_o who_o with_o thou_o o_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v all_o honour_n and_o glory_n for_o ever_o amen_n this_o prayer_n be_v not_o set_v down_o to_o urge_v any_o to_o use_v it_o daily_o but_o as_o any_o shall_v see_v cause_n and_o sometime_o to_o stir_v up_o those_o that_o feel_v themselves_o dead_a and_o unfit_a to_o pray_v by_o read_v it_o over_o and_o every_o thing_n in_o it_o so_o far_o to_o be_v apply_v as_o the_o state_n of_o the_o person_n shall_v require_v the_o end_n of_o the_o four_o treatise_n the_o five_o treatise_n show_v the_o let_v which_o hinder_v the_o sincere_a course_n of_o the_o christian_a life_n before_o describe_v chap._n 1._o of_o the_o sum_n and_o order_n of_o this_o treatise_n and_o how_o it_o agree_v well_o with_o the_o former_a as_o it_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o constrain_v and_o enable_v we_o to_o love_v he_o and_o therefore_o to_o endeavour_v to_o obey_v he_o so_o the_o wicked_a who_o be_v not_o belove_v of_o he_o can_v love_v nor_o serve_v he_o therefore_o it_o be_v infinite_a and_o not_o to_o my_o purpose_n here_o to_o make_v a_o large_a discourse_n of_o this_o what_o let_v hinder_v they_o from_o the_o same_o see_v it_o be_v no_o one_o particular_o but_o many_o which_o hold_v they_o from_o a_o godly_a life_n as_o also_o from_o faith_n but_o see_v the_o most_o of_o the_o impediment_n which_o hinder_v they_o altogether_o be_v also_o stop_v and_o stay_v to_o god_n dear_a servant_n so_o that_o they_o be_v not_o so_o clear_a light_n in_o give_v good_a example_n as_o they_o may_v and_o as_o be_v meet_v for_o they_o therefore_o for_o the_o better_a further_a of_o they_o in_o the_o way_n to_o a_o godly_a life_n i_o will_v by_o that_o occasion_n lie_v forth_o some_o of_o they_o which_o hinder_v both_o but_o chief_o i_o will_v show_v how_o the_o poor_a child_n of_o god_n be_v hold_v back_o and_o so_o become_v more_o offensive_a and_o give_v such_o help_n as_o i_o can_v against_o the_o same_o for_o that_o be_v the_o point_n which_o i_o propound_v in_o this_o treatise_n to_o acquaint_v the_o reader_n with_o and_o first_o to_o say_v somewhat_o general_o before_o i_o proceed_v he_o that_o faithful_o use_v the_o daily_a direction_n set_v down_o before_o or_o the_o like_a danger_n shall_v be_v furnish_v daily_o with_o the_o munition_n that_o a_o christian_n shall_v need_v against_o his_o great_a enemy_n and_o as_o i_o have_v say_v shall_v find_v rest_n to_o his_o soul_n daily_o which_o otherwise_o be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v nor_o enjoy_v constant_o of_o any_o neither_o the_o beauty_n and_o felicity_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n in_o any_o sort_n possess_v as_o it_o may_v for_o though_o i_o dream_v of_o no_o perfection_n in_o this_o life_n yet_o he_o that_o walk_v in_o this_o royal_a way_n shall_v not_o doubt_v where_o he_o be_v and_o whether_o he_o be_v out_o of_o his_o way_n as_o other_o shall_v from_o time_n to_o time_n he_o shall_v be_v accompany_v throughout_o the_o day_n and_o from_o day_n to_o day_n with_o faith_n hope_n love_n humility_n meekness_n righteousness_n uprightness_n patience_n temperancy_n somewhat_o arm_v against_o trouble_n have_v the_o word_n according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n ready_a to_o guide_v he_o what_o to_o follow_v and_o what_o to_o refuse_v now_o therefore_o it_o may_v seem_v needless_a to_o say_v any_o more_o about_o this_o matter_n and_o indeed_o this_o i_o say_v that_o he_o who_o be_v settle_v firm_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o that_o which_o be_v before_o set_v down_o shall_v find_v every_o day_n less_o to_o hinder_v he_o then_o other_o and_o the_o christian_a life_n more_o easy_a to_o he_o but_o because_o we_o be_v not_o ignorant_a of_o satan_n enterprise_n who_o way_n as_o he_o be_v first_o hardly_o cast_v out_o and_o with_o much_o ado_n so_o he_o be_v afterward_o more_o fierce_a and_o subtle_a to_o hinder_v such_o as_o have_v escape_v his_o hand_n therefore_o i_o will_v not_o bear_v the_o reader_n in_o hand_n that_o this_o direction_n or_o the_o like_a will_v be_v as_o easy_o observe_v and_o keep_v constant_o as_o read_v and_o learned_a lest_o he_o find_v it_o otherwise_o shall_v be_v discourage_v and_o set_v further_o back_o but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v of_o the_o part_n already_o with_o how_o much_o ado_n they_o shall_v be_v practise_v so_o i_o say_v much_o more_o of_o the_o whole_a that_o see_v it_o be_v a_o chain_a up_o of_o the_o unruly_a thought_n and_o desire_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o will_v at_o the_o first_o seem_v the_o more_o difficult_a but_o although_o they_o escape_v that_o first_o plunge_n i_o mean_v not_o to_o renounce_v and_o cast_v off_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o altogether_o through_o the_o difficulty_n and_o hardness_n which_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o it_o but_o will_v conceive_v hope_n that_o god_n will_v strengthen_v they_o to_o abide_v constant_o therein_o which_o be_v a_o great_a conquest_n yet_o they_o must_v know_v that_o there_o will_v fall_v out_o very_a many_o let_v to_o hinder_v and_o hold_v they_o back_o one_o time_n or_o other_o and_o one_o way_n or_o other_o to_o make_v the_o doctrine_n which_o shall_v direct_v they_o without_o fruit_n unto_o they_o the_o devil_n as_o i_o have_v say_v will_v lay_v sundry_a block_n in_o their_o way_n to_o hinder_v they_o from_o go_v forward_o in_o and_o after_o this_o course_n of_o live_v by_o faith_n daily_o beside_o these_o there_o be_v some_o which_o desire_v to_o please_v god_n from_o their_o heart_n though_o not_o acquaint_v with_o any_o direction_n how_o to_o be_v guide_v but_o come_v far_o behind_o they_o help_v we_o must_v therefore_o seek_v how_o to_o prop_v up_o and_o bring_v on_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o weak_a as_o well_o as_o give_v rule_n to_o the_o strong_a and_o endeavour_n to_o bring_v they_o by_o little_a and_o little_a to_o this_o estate_n as_o well_o as_o teach_v the_o other_o how_o to_o keep_v in_o the_o good_a course_n which_o they_o have_v attain_v to_o final_o we_o must_v in_o a_o wise_a and_o tender_a regard_n of_o their_o frailty_n as_o forgetfulness_n earthly_a mindedness_n way_n coldness_n slothfulness_n also_o of_o their_o ignorance_n and_o other_o want_v of_o experience_n teach_v they_o as_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o how_o to_o rise_v when_o they_o be_v fall_v &_o to_o come_v into_o the_o way_n when_o by_o occasion_n they_o be_v go_v out_o that_o thus_o they_o may_v not_o be_v too_o much_o dismay_v by_o their_o infirmity_n but_o rather_o strong_o encourage_v to_o have_v better_a acquaintance_n with_o the_o life_n of_o a_o
how_o the_o love_n even_o of_o the_o godly_a shall_v wax_v cold_a which_o he_o speak_v as_o a_o thing_n both_o admirable_a and_o to_o be_v much_o lament_v and_o withal_o this_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n feel_v of_o not_o quench_v the_o spirit_n be_v of_o any_o weight_n with_o we_o why_o be_v it_o at_o this_o day_n with_o many_o which_o be_v of_o good_a hope_n that_o they_o appertain_v to_o god_n as_o it_o be_v and_o as_o we_o see_v it_o to_o be_v that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o their_o good_a beginning_n have_v be_v turn_v into_o unlike_a even_o dangerous_a proceed_n for_o in_o many_o it_o may_v be_v see_v of_o who_o it_o may_v as_o true_o be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v nothing_o like_o the_o people_n which_o once_o they_o be_v when_o they_o first_o embrace_v the_o gospel_n case_n i_o may_v just_o make_v the_o complaint_n of_o any_o which_o have_v be_v but_o abate_v in_o their_o zeal_n and_o fervent_a love_n of_o good_a thing_n of_o which_o sort_n there_o be_v innumerable_a but_o i_o will_v i_o may_v not_o also_o charge_v number_n that_o they_o be_v disguise_v be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o forward_a and_o zealous_a professor_n which_o once_o they_o be_v that_o as_o saint_n paul_n complain_v of_o the_o corinthian_n they_o be_v now_o full_a yea_o they_o think_v it_o mere_a foolishness_n to_o hunger_n after_o knowledge_n 4.8_o and_o thirst_n after_o grace_n and_o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n to_o desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n 2.2_o that_o they_o may_v grow_v thereby_o who_o if_o they_o think_v much_o to_o be_v still_o call_v babe_n and_o so_o to_o desire_v milk_n yet_o i_o hope_v though_o they_o be_v man_n grow_v they_o must_v still_o hunger_n after_o strong_a meat_n but_o howsoever_o it_o be_v and_o howsoever_o some_o have_v degenerate_v from_o their_o first_o love_n more_o than_o other_o it_o be_v too_o fearful_a to_o see_v i_o say_v not_o how_o many_o have_v no_o affection_n neither_o bear_v any_o hearty_a good_a will_n to_o the_o sincere_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n neither_o at_o any_o time_n ever_o do_v 5.14_o for_o who_o can_v number_v they_o but_o it_o be_v too_o fearful_a i_o say_v to_o see_v how_o many_o of_o they_o be_v change_v who_o begin_v well_o and_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v run_v well_o 5.7_o but_o they_o have_v be_v let_v in_o such_o wise_a as_o they_o obey_v not_o the_o truth_n if_o weariness_n of_o at_o least_o wise_a little_a pleasure_n take_v in_o the_o public_a ministry_n thereof_o neglect_v of_o private_a conference_n and_o of_o exhort_v and_o edify_v one_o another_o untowardness_n to_o good_a work_n and_o shake_v off_o love_n to_o the_o brethren_n embrace_v the_o world_n and_o the_o entertain_n of_o ill_a companionship_n with_o heart-burning_a against_o the_o preacher_n for_o tell_v they_o the_o truth_n who_o sometime_o they_o love_v and_o reverence_v high_o and_o if_o the_o make_n of_o no_o conscience_n of_o open_a sin_n where_o secret_a and_o small_a one_o can_v not_o sometime_o have_v be_v abide_v if_o i_o say_v these_o and_o such_o like_a in_o man_n where_o the_o contrary_a have_v be_v be_v sign_n that_o the_o first_o love_n be_v cool_v and_o sore_o decay_v there_o be_v enough_o who_o give_v just_a cause_n of_o complain_v even_o these_o i_o say_v be_v sufficient_o convict_v to_o have_v leave_v their_o first_o love_n who_o be_v thus_o eclipse_v and_o darken_v as_o i_o have_v say_v for_o how_o can_v other_o be_v draw_v by_o their_o example_n when_o they_o see_v they_o not_o to_o hold_v out_o the_o profession_n of_o their_o hope_n with_o joyfulness_n as_o they_o be_v wont_a nay_o how_o can_v they_o choose_v but_o be_v more_o backward_o in_o religion_n and_o discourage_v by_o the_o same_o indeed_o i_o confess_v it_o require_v the_o whole_a man_n to_o be_v take_v up_o and_o employ_v in_o this_o work_n that_o god_n may_v be_v serve_v of_o we_o with_o such_o cheerfulness_n and_o readiness_n as_o he_o be_v at_o the_o beginning_n but_o what_o then_o can_v we_o for_o all_o that_o deny_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v employ_v with_o all_o possible_a care_n therein_o and_o what_o day_n come_v over_o our_o head_n wherein_o god_n give_v we_o not_o encouragement_n hereunto_o for_o what_o day_n do_v we_o not_o or_o may_v we_o not_o make_v our_o heart_n merry_a with_o the_o lord_n favour_v free_o grant_v we_o and_o his_o love_a countenance_n shine_v upon_o we_o and_o can_v it_o be_v any_o less_o than_o our_o great_a sin_n work_n to_o have_v our_o heart_n go_v after_o strange_a delight_n which_o shall_v malice_n and_o vigilancy_n not_o only_o to_o hinder_v but_o even_o to_o hold_v under_o goodness_n in_o we_o especial_o through_o so_o many_o occasion_n and_o provocation_n as_o we_o walk_v subject_a to_o in_o the_o world_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o lord_n may_v we_o not_o shake_v off_o our_o fervency_n and_o diligence_n in_o do_v the_o lord_n work_v and_o although_o we_o can_v avoid_v it_o but_o we_o shall_v be_v near_o lay_v at_o and_o narrow_o beset_v with_o all_o manner_n of_o hindrance_n both_o allurement_n and_o discouragement_n so_o as_o we_o shall_v be_v break_v off_o again_o and_o again_o yet_o must_v we_o therefore_o know_v that_o our_o life_n be_v call_v and_o so_o we_o must_v find_v it_o even_o a_o continual_a battle_n with_o our_o lust_n worldly_a and_o unruly_a and_o our_o affection_n unmortify_v and_o we_o must_v accustom_v overselue_n hereto_o careful_o thereto_o see_v the_o lord_n have_v promise_v to_o teach_v our_o finger_n to_o fight_v and_o our_o hand_n to_o war_n that_o in_o time_n we_o may_v be_v expert_a rather_o than_o cowardly_a to_o faint_v or_o treacherous_o to_o run_v away_o yea_o but_o you_o will_v say_v we_o be_v ignorant_a in_o many_o point_n how_o to_o behave_v our_o self_n which_o procure_v we_o no_o small_a disadvantage_n and_o i_o say_v again_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o ignorance_n shall_v not_o great_o hurt_v we_o which_o we_o can_v be_v without_o but_o shall_v serve_v to_o humble_v we_o only_o yea_o but_o we_o be_v forgetful_a also_o you_o will_v say_v &_o that_o much_o trouble_v us._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v as_o to_o the_o former_a it_o be_v not_o this_o that_o can_v unsettle_v we_o if_o we_o add_v not_o thereunto_o our_o own_o wit_n &_o wilful_a negligence_n and_o if_o you_o object_n that_o for_o all_o our_o care_n and_o watch_v to_o nourish_v and_o preserve_v grace_n and_o holy_a affection_n in_o we_o yet_o who_o be_v so_o circumspect_a and_o vigilant_a but_o he_o shall_v be_v unsettle_a and_o turn_v out_o of_o his_o course_n before_o he_o be_v aware_a i_o answer_v again_o howsoever_o this_o be_v or_o come_v to_o pass_v it_o be_v but_o to_o the_o end_n we_o shall_v rise_v up_o &_o recover_v by_o receive_v we_o again_o i_o have_v object_v the_o hard_a that_o be_v wont_a to_o hinder_v and_o break_v off_o our_o first_o love_n and_o be_v our_o heart_n daily_o set_v to_o count_v it_o our_o great_a work_n to_o keep_v it_o as_o how_o great_a be_v our_o help_n and_o encouragement_n hereto_o god_n witness_v to_o that_o i_o say_v though_o many_o do_v who_o will_v not_o be_v counsel_v yet_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v they_o who_o shall_v lose_v their_o first_o love_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o this_o second_o let_v arise_v from_o want_n of_o some_o necessary_a thing_n namely_o of_o our_o first_o love_n where_o in_o the_o way_n of_o answer_v objection_n i_o have_v set_v down_o the_o remedy_n against_o it_o chap._n 7._o of_o a_o three_o let_v in_o this_o first_o kind_n namely_o the_o want_n satan_n abuse_v by_o occasion_n of_o some_o want_n of_o good_a thing_n in_o they_o when_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n if_o they_o know_v so_o much_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n but_o contrariwise_o of_o rejoice_v thus_o much_o of_o the_o first_o kind_n of_o let_n chap._n 8._o of_o the_o second_o kind_n of_o general_a let_n namely_o the_o unmortified_a affection_n wherewith_o he_o oppress_v the_o man_n can_v tell_v which_o be_v most_o odious_a in_o itself_o and_o work_v most_o furious_o and_o that_o most_o disguise_v we_o who_o make_v ourselves_o bondman_n thereto_o for_o proof_n of_o that_o it_o trouble_n and_o disquiet_v he_o yea_o wound_n and_o accuse_v he_o he_o think_v it_o the_o loathsome_a and_o most_o shameful_a of_o all_o other_o as_o indeed_o there_o need_v no_o worse_o thing_n to_o annoy_v and_o disturb_v he_o and_o it_o cause_v he_o oft_o to_o say_v oh_o what_o can_v be_v more_o irksome_a unsavoury_a and_o shameful_a than_o this_o 12.19.20_o even_o as_o the_o people_n say_v in_o samuel_n of_o their_o wilfulness_n we_o have_v sin_v many_o other_o way_n but_o especial_o in_o ask_v a_o king_n so_o i_o say_v that_o sin_n seem_v to_o a_o penitent_a christian_n when_o he_o come_v to_o himself_o most_o odious_a wherewith_o he_o have_v feel_v his_o heart_n most_o entangle_v but_o to_o prove_v that_o true_a which_o i_o say_v so_o do_v he_o cry_v out_o of_o the_o several_o with_o the_o several_a let_n or_o one_o remedy_n for_o sundry_a let_n or_o where_o neither_o be_v know_v that_o the_o daily_a direction_n which_o we_o have_v be_v move_v to_o practice_v shall_v be_v the_o remedy_n in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o among_o the_o unmortified_a affection_n i_o will_v begin_v with_o that_o which_o trouble_v the_o most_o of_o they_o etc._n till_o god_n give_v under_o dreadful_a fear_n and_o distrustfulness_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o persevere_v to_o the_o end_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n especial_o in_o sore_a trial_n and_o when_o persecution_n and_o strong_a temptation_n shall_v come_v one_o and_o this_o fear_n he_o do_v fasten_v upon_o they_o the_o more_o easy_o see_v that_o affection_n of_o fear_n be_v most_o near_o glue_v to_o they_o and_o beside_o when_o they_o see_v example_n of_o faint_n in_o many_o professor_n and_o how_o cruel_a the_o ungodly_a profane_a scorner_n atheist_n papist_n and_o persecuter_n be_v among_o who_o they_o live_v this_o fear_n be_v soon_o strengthen_v and_o confirm_v in_o they_o for_o which_o cause_n our_o saviour_n forewarn_v his_o disciple_n of_o it_o 10.28_o say_v fear_v not_o they_o which_o kill_v the_o body_n but_o be_v not_o able_a to_o kill_v the_o soul_n but_o rather_o fear_v he_o which_o be_v able_a to_o destroy_v both_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o hell_n 1.28_o and_o saint_n paul_n in_o nothing_o fear_v your_o adversary_n etc._n etc._n for_o this_o can_v be_v predominant_a but_o it_o feeble_v utter_o the_o power_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o the_o raise_n of_o the_o mud_n in_o a_o spring_n they_o trouble_v the_o pure_a water_n and_o consequent_o hold_v back_o the_o instrument_n of_o the_o body_n from_o practise_v well_o any_o kind_n of_o duty_n in_o these_o fetter_n therefore_o of_o fear_n and_o most_o painful_a and_o irksome_a straits_n he_o hold_v they_o or_o if_o any_o escape_n and_o so_o begin_v to_o rejoice_v in_o their_o hope_n again_o yet_o shall_v they_o not_o attain_v thereto_o nor_o grow_v therein_o distrust_v themselves_o and_o rest_v in_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n nor_o be_v deliver_v out_o of_o their_o fear_n but_o with_o much_o difficulty_n and_o promise_n of_o god_n if_o we_o sue_v and_o seek_v to_o he_o with_o this_o condition_n to_o be_v deliver_v if_o it_o be_v expedient_a in_o his_o eye_n endeavour_v to_o be_v content_v with_o that_o which_o shall_v fall_v out_o on_o either_o side_n note_n we_o have_v behave_v ourselves_o as_o it_o become_v we_o we_o have_v seek_v to_o he_o aright_o as_o his_o word_n teach_v we_o and_o if_o we_o after_o this_o obtain_v deliverance_n god_n have_v hear_v we_o he_o have_v keep_v promise_n with_o we_o and_o we_o have_v receive_v good_a proof_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o who_o can_v deny_v but_o be_v so_o far_o off_o that_o we_o shall_v count_v that_o a_o privilege_n or_o any_o matter_n of_o rejoice_v that_o it_o make_v our_o affliction_n double_a yea_o tenfold_o thereby_o which_o be_v in_o a_o manner_n none_o at_o all_o before_o and_o thus_o i_o conclude_v this_o other_o point_n affirm_v that_o as_o it_o be_v a_o singular_a prerogative_n to_o we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v keep_v from_o many_o trouble_v altogether_o which_o other_o can_v be_v free_v from_o so_o it_o be_v no_o less_o honour_n privilege_n and_o favour_n that_o we_o may_v be_v deliver_v out_o of_o many_o which_o other_o shall_v not_o be_v deliver_v from_o as_o i_o have_v show_v and_o prove_v in_o this_o present_a point_n but_o yet_o then_o only_o it_o be_v a_o privilege_n as_o i_o have_v say_v that_o we_o may_v be_v we_o may_v have_v much_o good_a by_o our_o affliction_n the_o three_o point_n of_o this_o second_o branch_n now_o follow_v which_o be_v no_o less_o than_o a_o great_a privilege_n itself_o beside_o the_o two_o former_a and_o that_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n teach_v his_o child_n aright_o and_o well_o to_o bear_v those_o affliction_n which_o he_o think_v meet_v to_o try_v they_o with_o and_o to_o hold_v they_o under_o so_o that_o they_o may_v not_o only_o endure_v and_o go_v under_o they_o patient_o and_o content_o 119.71_o but_o also_o receive_v much_o good_a by_o they_o as_o they_o themselves_o be_v constrain_v to_o confess_v and_o as_o the_o lord_n teach_v his_o people_n to_o make_v this_o use_n of_o their_o affliction_n 1.5.6_o so_o every_o one_o of_o he_o may_v also_o learn_v the_o same_o if_o they_o be_v wise_a enough_o to_o think_v so_o that_o be_v to_o be_v resolve_v that_o for_o their_o exceed_a benefit_n and_o profit_n he_o send_v they_o for_o then_o and_o never_o till_o then_o they_o frame_v and_o address_v themselves_o to_o receive_v they_o from_o god_n thankful_o and_o meek_o when_o his_o word_n have_v thorough_o settle_v this_o thought_n and_o persuasion_n in_o they_o which_o wisdom_n few_o have_v or_o attain_v unto_o thus_o to_o think_v but_o their_o own_o foolish_a reason_n which_o while_o they_o seek_v nothing_o but_o ease_n and_o freedom_n from_o trouble_n lead_v they_o a_o clean_a contrary_a way_n that_o be_v to_o be_v utter_o unwilling_a to_o bear_v they_o even_o discourage_v and_o heavy_a heart_a as_o oft_o as_o they_o think_v on_o they_o this_o wisdom_n therefore_o must_v be_v seek_v for_o even_o of_o the_o good_a servant_n of_o god_n 9.23_o that_o they_o look_v for_o they_o daily_o and_o be_v ready_a to_o receive_v they_o from_o god_n this_o it_o be_v that_o must_v suppress_v and_o check_v all_o contrary_a power_n of_o carnal_a reason_n which_o will_v be_v otherwise_o in_o the_o way_n at_o all_o time_n to_o annoy_v they_o it_o follow_v therefore_o next_o and_o most_o consequent_o to_o declare_v how_o the_o poor_a people_n of_o god_n may_v come_v by_o this_o wisdom_n &_o then_o to_o show_v how_o it_o guide_v they_o to_o
