messiah_n or_o christ_n be_v so_o often_o repeat_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n why_o be_v this_o sometime_o urge_v without_o the_o mention_v of_o any_o other_o article_n of_o belief_n do_v not_o this_o plain_o show_v that_o this_o be_v all_o that_o be_v require_v to_o be_v believe_v as_o necessary_a to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_a may_v we_o not_o infer_v from_o the_o frequent_a and_o sole_a repetition_n of_o this_o article_n in_o several_a place_n of_o the_o evangelist_n and_o the_o act_n that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o point_n of_o faith_n of_o absolute_a necessity_n but_o that_o this_o alone_a be_v sufficient_a to_o constitute_v a_o man_n a_o true_a member_n of_o christ._n by_o which_o he_o show_v that_o he_o be_v uncertain_a which_o way_n to_o put_v the_o objection_n so_o as_o may_v be_v easy_a to_o get_v rid_v of_o it_o and_o therefore_o he_o have_v turn_v it_o several_a way_n and_o put_v several_a question_n about_o it_o as_o first_o why_o this_o article_n of_o faith_n viz._n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n be_v so_o often_o repeat_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n his_o next_o question_n be_v why_o be_v this_o sometime_o urge_v without_o the_o mention_v any_o other_o article_n of_o belief_n which_o suppose_v that_o sometime_o other_o article_n of_o belief_n be_v mention_v with_o it_o the_o three_o question_n be_v may_v we_o not_o infer_v from_o the_o frequent_a and_o sole_a repetition_n of_o this_o article_n in_o several_a place_n of_o the_o evangelist_n and_o acts._n which_o last_o question_n be_v in_o effect_n why_o be_v this_o so_o frequent_o and_o alone_o repeat_v in_o the_o evangelist_n and_o the_o act_n i._n e._n in_o the_o preach_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n to_o unbeliever_n for_o of_o that_o he_o must_v give_v a_o account_n if_o he_o will_v remove_v the_o difficulty_n which_o three_o though_o put_v as_o one_o yet_o be_v three_o as_o distinct_a question_n and_o demand_v a_o reason_n for_o three_o as_o distinct_a matter_n of_o fact_n as_o these_o three_o be_v viz._n frequent_o propose_v sometime_o propose_v alone_o and_o always_o propose_v alone_o in_o the_o preach_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n for_o so_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v all_o through_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o act_n to_o the_o unconverted_a believer_n of_o one_o god_n alone_o these_o three_o question_n be_v thus_o jumble_v together_o in_o one_o objection_n let_v we_o see_v how_o the_o four_o particular_n he_o mention_n will_v account_v for_o they_o the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v this_o the_o believe_v of_o jesus_n to_o be_v the_o promise_a messiah_n be_v say_v he_o the_o first_o step_n to_o christianity_n let_v it_o be_v so_o what_o do_v you_o infer_v from_o thence_o the_o next_o word_n show_v therefore_o this_o rather_o than_o any_o other_o article_n be_v propound_v to_o be_v believe_v by_o all_o those_o who_o either_o our_o saviour_n or_o his_o apostle_n invite_v to_o embrace_v christianity_n let_v your_o premise_n be_v never_o so_o true_a and_o your_o deduction_n of_o this_o
epistle_n which_o be_v all_o write_v to_o those_o who_o have_v embrace_v the_o faith_n and_o be_v all_o christian_n already_o i_o think_v will_v not_o so_o distinct_o show_v what_o be_v those_o doctrine_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n they_o be_v not_o write_v to_o convert_v unbeliever_n but_o to_o build_v up_o those_o who_o be_v already_o believer_n in_o their_o most_o holy_a faith_n this_o be_v plain_o express_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n v._o 11_o &c_n &c_n of_o who_o i._n e._n christ_n we_o have_v many_o thing_n to_o say_v and_o hard_a to_o be_v utter_v see_v you_o be_v all_o dull_a of_o hear_v for_o when_o for_o the_o time_n you_o ought_v to_o be_v teacher_n you_o have_v need_v that_o one_o teach_v you_o again_o which_o be_v the_o first_o principle_n of_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n and_o be_v become_v such_o as_o have_v need_n of_o milk_n and_o not_o of_o strong_a meat_n for_o every_o one_o that_o use_v milk_n be_v unskilful_a in_o the_o word_n of_o righteousness_n for_o he_o be_v a_o babe_n but_o strong_a meat_n belong_v to_o he_o that_o be_v of_o full_a age_n even_o those_o who_o by_o reason_n of_o use_n have_v their_o sense_n exercise_v to_o discern_v both_o good_a and_o bad_a therefore_o leave_v the_o principle_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n let_v we_o go_v on_o unto_o perfection_n not_o contrivance_n and_o carry_v on_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o evidence_n of_o it_o which_o he_o make_v out_o in_o this_o epistle_n by_o show_v its_o correspondence_n with_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o particular_o with_o the_o oeconomy_n of_o the_o moysaicall_a constitution_n here_o i_o may_v ask_v the_o unmasker_n whether_o those_o many_o thing_n which_o st._n paul_n tell_v the_o hebrew_n he_o have_v to_o say_v of_o christ_n hard_a to_o be_v utter_v to_o they_o because_o they_o be_v dull_a of_o hear_v have_v not_o a_o immediate_a respect_n to_o the_o occasion_n author_n way_n means_n or_o issue_n of_o their_o redemption_n and_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o whether_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n without_o the_o knowledge_n of_o which_o they_o can_v not_o be_v save_v as_o the_o unmasker_n say_v of_o such_o thing_n p._n 23._o and_o the_o like_a i_o may_v ask_v he_o concern_v those_o thing_n which_o the_o apostle_n tell_v the_o corinthian_n 1_o ep._n chap._n iii_o 2._o that_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o able_a to_o bear_v for_o much_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o speak_v to_o the_o corinthian_n ep._n 1._o ch._n iii_o as_o in_o the_o above-cited_n place_n he_o do_v to_o the_o hebrew_n that_o he_o as_o a_o wise_a master-builder_n have_v lay_v the_o foundation_n and_o that_o foundation_n he_o himself_o tell_v we_o be_v jesus_n the_o messiah_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o foundation_n to_o be_v lay_v and_o that_o in_o this_o he_o lay_v the_o foundation_n of_o christianity_n at_o corinth_n st._n luke_n record_v act_n xviii_o 4._o in_o these_o word_n paul_n at_o corinth_n reason_v in_o the_o synagogue_n every_o sabbath-day_n and_o testify_v to_o the_o jew_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n upon_o which_o foundation_n he_o tell_v they_o there_o may_v be_v a_o superstructure_n but_o that_o what_o be_v build_v on_o the_o foundation_n be_v not_o the_o foundation_n i_o think_v i_o need_v not_o prove_v he_o further_o tell_v they_o that_o he_o have_v desire_v to_o build_v upon_o this_o foundation_n but_o withal_o say_v he_o have_v feed_v they_o till_o then_o with_o milk_n and_o not_o with_o meat_n because_o they_o be_v babe_n and_o have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v it_o neither_o be_v they_o yet_o able_a and_o therefore_o this_o epistle_n we_o see_v be_v almost_o whole_o spend_v in_o reproof_n of_o their_o miscarriage_n and_o in_o exhortation_n and_o instruction_n relate_v to_o practice_n and_o very_o little_o say_v in_o it_o for_o the_o explain_v any_o part_n of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o salvation_n contain_v in_o the_o gospel_n by_o these_o passage_n we_o may_v see_v be_v it_o not_o evident_a to_o common_a sense_n itself_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n that_o the_o design_n of_o these_o epistle_n be_v not_o to_o lay_v the_o foundation_n or_o teach_v the_o principle_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n they_o be_v write_v to_o those_o who_o have_v receive_v they_o and_o be_v christian_n already_o the_o same_o hold_v in_o all_o the_o other_o epistle_n and_o therefore_o the_o epistle_n seem_v not_o to_o i_o the_o proper_a part_n of_o scripture_n to_o give_v we_o that_o foundation_n distinct_a from_o all_o the_o superstructure_n build_v on_o it_o because_o in_o the_o epistle_n the_o latter_a be_v the_o thing_n propose_v rather_o than_o the_o former_a for_o the_o main_a intention_n of_o the_o apostle_n in_o write_v their_o epistle_n can_v not_o be_v to_o do_v what_o be_v do_v already_o to_o lay_v down_o bare_o the_o foundation_n of_o christianity_n to_o those_o who_o be_v christian_n already_o but_o to_o build_v upon_o it_o some_o â—arther_a explication_n of_o it_o which_o either_o their_o particular_a circumstance_n or_o a_o general_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n wisdom_n excellency_n and_o privilege_n etc._n etc._n of_o the_o gospel_n require_v this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o persuade_v i_o to_o take_v the_o article_n of_o faith_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v receive_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n only_o from_o the_o preach_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n to_o the_o unconverted_a world_n as_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o historical_a part_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n and_o i_o think_v it_o a_o good_a reason_n it_o be_v past_a doubt_n that_o they_o in_o their_o preach_n propose_v to_o the_o unconvert_v all_o that_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v they_o christian_n and_o also_o that_o that_o faith_n upon_o a_o profession_n whereof_o any_o one_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o church_n as_o a_o believer_n have_v all_o that_o be_v necessary_a in_o it_o to_o make_v he_o a_o christian_a because_o if_o it_o want_v any_o thing_n necessary_a he_o have_v necessary_o not_o be_v admit_v unless_o we_o can_v suppose_v that_o any_o one_o be_v admit_v into_o the_o christian_a church_n by_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o a_o christian_a or_o pronounce_v a_o believer_n who_o yet_o want_v something_o necessary_a to_o make_v he_o a_o believer_n i._n e._n be_v a_o believer_n and_o not_o a_o believer_n at_o the_o same_o time_n but_o what_o those_o article_n be_v which_o have_v be_v preach_v to_o those_o to_o who_o the_o epistle_n be_v write_v and_o upon_o the_o belief_n whereof_o they_o have_v be_v admit_v into_o the_o christian_a church_n and_o become_v as_o they_o be_v call_v believer_n saint_n faithful_n elect_a etc._n etc._n can_v not_o be_v collect_v out_o of_o the_o epistle_n this_o though_o it_o be_v my_o reason_n and_o must_v be_v a_o reason_n to_o every_o one_o who_o will_v make_v this_o enquiry_n and_o the_o unmasker_n quote_v the_o place_n where_o i_o tell_v he_o it_o be_v my_o reason_n yet_o he_o according_a to_o his_o never_o err_a illumination_n flat_o tell_v i_o p._n 38._o that_o it_o be_v not_o and_o add_v here_o then_o be_v want_n of_o sincerity_n etc._n etc._n i_o must_v desire_v he_o therefore_o to_o prove_v what_o he_o say_v p._n 38._o viz._n xv._n that_o by_o the_o same_o argument_n that_o i_o will_v persuade_v that_o the_o fundamental_o be_v not_o to_o be_v seek_v for_o in_o the_o epistle_n he_o can_v prove_v that_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v seek_v for_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o the_o act_n because_o even_o these_o be_v write_v to_o those_o that_o believe_v and_o next_o i_o desire_v he_o to_o prove_v what_o he_o also_o say_v in_o the_o same_o page_n viz._n xvi_o that_o the_o epistle_n be_v write_v to_o those_o that_o believe_v be_v not_o a_o argument_n that_o i_o do_v make_v use_n of_o he_o tell_v we_o p._n 38._o that_o it_o be_v the_o argument_n whereby_o i_o will_v persuade_v and_o in_o the_o very_a same_o page_n a_o few_o line_n low_a say_z that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o argument_n i_o do_v make_v use_n of_o who_o but_o a_o arrant_a unmasker_n will_v contradict_v himself_o so_o
not_o then_o discover_v or_o at_o least_o not_o full_o we_o must_v here_o excuse_v the_o doubtfulness_n of_o his_o talk_a concern_v the_o discovery_n of_o his_o other_o necessary_a article_n for_o how_o can_v he_o say_v they_o be_v discover_v or_o not_o discover_v clear_o or_o obscure_o full_o or_o not_o full_o when_o he_o do_v not_o yet_o know_v they_o all_o nor_o can_v tell_v we_o what_o those_o necessary_a article_n be_v if_o he_o do_v know_v they_o let_v he_o give_v we_o a_o list_n of_o they_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v see_v easy_o whether_o they_o be_v at_o all_o publish_v or_o discover_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n if_o there_o be_v some_o of_o they_o that_o be_v not_o at_o all_o discover_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n let_v he_o speak_v it_o out_o and_o leave_v shift_a and_o if_o some_o of_o those_o that_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o our_o saviour_n time_n but_o for_o the_o succeed_a one_o only_o be_v yet_o discover_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n why_o be_v they_o not_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v in_o that_o time_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v he_o know_v not_o what_o these_o doctrine_n necessary_a for_o succeed_v time_n be_v and_o therefore_o can_v say_v nothing_o positive_a about_o their_o discovery_n and_o for_o those_o that_o he_o have_v set_v down_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o shall_v name_v any_o one_o of_o they_o to_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o those_o not_o necessary_a for_o our_o saviour_n time_n but_o necessary_a for_o the_o succeed_v one_o it_o will_v present_o appear_v either_o that_o it_o be_v discover_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n and_o than_o it_o be_v as_o necessary_a for_o his_o time_n as_o the_o succeed_v or_o else_o that_o it_o be_v not_o discover_v in_o his_o time_n nor_o to_o several_a convert_v after_o his_o time_n before_o they_o be_v make_v christian_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o more_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_a in_o the_o succeed_v than_o it_o be_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n however_o general_a position_n and_o distinction_n without_o a_o foundation_n serve_v for_o show_v and_o to_o beguile_v unwary_a and_o inattentive_a reader_n 2_o o._n have_v thus_o mind_v he_o that_o the_o question_n be_v about_o article_n of_o faith_n necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o and_o distinct_o believe_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_a i_o then_o in_o the_o next_o place_n demand_v of_o he_o to_o tell_v i_o thirty-nine_o whether_o or_o no_o all_o the_o article_n necessary_a now_o to_o be_v distinct_o and_o explicit_o believe_v to_o make_v any_o man_n a_o christian_n be_v distinct_o and_o explicit_o publish_v or_o discover_v in_o our_o saviour_n time_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v desire_v to_o know_v of_o he_o xl._o a_o reason_n why_o they_o be_v not_o those_o that_o he_o instance_n in_o of_o christ_n death_n and_o resurrection_n will_v not_o help_v he_o one_o jot_n for_o they_o be_v not_o new_a doctrine_n reveal_v new_a mystery_n discover_v but_o matter_n of_o fact_n which_o happen_v to_o our_o saviour_n in_o their_o due_a time_n to_o complete_a in_o he_o the_o character_n and_o prediction_n of_o the_o messiah_n and_o demonstrate_v he_o to_o be_v the_o deliverer_n promise_v these_o be_v record_v of_o he_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a writ_n but_o be_v no_o more_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n than_o any_o other_o part_n of_o divine_a revelation_n but_o as_o far_o as_o they_o have_v a_o immediate_a connexion_n with_o his_o be_v the_o messiah_n and_o can_v be_v deny_v without_o deny_v he_o to_o be_v the_o messiah_n and_o therefore_o this_o article_n of_o his_o resurrection_n which_o suppose_v his_o death_n and_o such_o other_o proposition_n as_o be_v convertible_a with_o his_o be_v the_o messiah_n be_v as_o they_o very_o well_o may_v be_v put_v for_o his_o be_v the_o messiah_n and_o as_o i_o have_v show_v propose_v to_o be_v believe_v in_o the_o place_n of_o it_o all_o that_o be_v reveal_v in_o scripture_n have_v a_o consequential_a necessity_n of_o be_v believe_v by_o all_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v propose_v because_o it_o be_v of_o divine_a authority_n one_o part_n as_o much_o as_o another_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o the_o divine_a truth_n in_o the_o inspire_a write_n be_v fundamental_a and_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v but_o then_o this_o will_v destroy_v our_o vnmasker_n select_a number_n of_o fundamental_a article_n and_o the_o choice_a and_o sublimest_n truth_n of_o christianity_n which_o he_o tell_v we_o be_v to_o be_v meet_v with_o in_o the_o epistle_n will_v not_o be_v more_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v than_o any_o which_o he_o may_v think_v the_o common_a or_o mean_a truth_n in_o any_o of_o the_o epistle_n or_o the_o gospel_n whatsoever_o part_n of_o divine_a revelation_n whether_o reveal_v before_o or_o in_o or_o after_o our_o saviour_n time_n whether_o it_o contain_v according_a to_o the_o distinction_n of_o our_o unmasker_n nice_a palate_n choice_n or_o common_a sublime_a or_o not_o sublime_a truth_n be_v necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v by_o every_o one_o to_o who_o it_o be_v propose_v as_o far_o as_o he_o understand_v what_o be_v propose_v but_o god_n by_o jesus_n christ_n have_v enter_v into_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n with_o mankind_n a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n instead_o of_o that_o of_o work_n wherein_o some_o truth_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o believe_v by_o they_o to_o make_v man_n christian_n and_o therefore_o those_o truth_n be_v necessary_a to_o be_v know_v and_o consequent_o necessary_a to_o be_v propose_v to_o they_o to_o make_v they_o christian_n this_o be_v peculiar_a to_o they_o to_o make_v man_n christian_n for_o all_o man_n as_o man_n be_v under_o a_o necessary_a obligation_n to_o believe_v what_o god_n propose_v to_o they_o to_o be_v believe_v but_o there_o be_v certain_a distinguish_a truth_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o if_o men_n know_v not_o they_o can_v be_v christian_n and_o they_o be_v some_o of_o they_o such_o as_o can_v be_v know_v without_o be_v propose_v those_o and_o those_o only_o be_v the_o necessary_a doctrine_n of_o christianity_n i_o speak_v of_o without_o a_o knowledge_n of_o and_o assent_v to_o which_o no_o man_n can_v be_v a_o christian._n to_o come_v therefore_o to_o a_o clear_a decision_n of_o this_o controversy_n i_o desire_v the_o unmasker_n to_o tell_v i_o xli_o what_o those_o doctrine_n be_v which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v propose_v to_o every_o history_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n preach_v have_v with_o such_o a_o peculiar_a distinction_n every_o where_o propose_v xliv_o 3_o o._n or_o whether_o the_o doctrine_n necessary_a to_o be_v propose_v to_o every_o one_o to_o make_v he_o a_o christian_a be_v any_o set_v of_o truth_n between_o these_o two_o and_o if_o he_o say_v this_o latter_a than_o i_o must_v ask_v he_o xlv_o
