truth_n a_o excellent_a question_n indeed_o if_o it_o have_v proceed_v from_o his_o heart_n and_o that_o he_o have_v be_v in_o earnest_n for_o what_o be_v more_o profitable_a and_o pleasant_a to_o search_v after_o than_o the_o truth_n all_o the_o world_n invocate_v the_o truth_n as_o we_o read_v 1_o esdras_n 4._o yea_o wicked_a man_n themselves_o though_o they_o be_v liar_n and_o false_a yet_o will_v press_v other_o to_o speak_v the_o truth_n and_o will_v not_o be_v cheat_v and_o deceive_v much_o more_o beautiful_a be_v truth_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o pilate_n do_v not_o ask_v this_o question_n hearty_o but_o as_o it_o be_v scornful_o and_o disdainful_o as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v do_v thou_o broach_v any_o other_o truth_n than_o what_o your_o high_a priest_n and_o our_o priest_n to_o hear_v a_o answer_n to_o his_o question_n he_o hear_v enough_o if_o he_o will_v have_v believe_v it_o 2._o but_o christ_n will_v no_o long_o linger_v out_o his_o passion_n and_o what_o need_n draw_v by_o consequence_n from_o the_o gospel_n but_o pilate_n have_v not_o receive_v a_o answer_n to_o his_o mind_n go_v out_o to_o the_o jew_n again_o he_o suppose_v that_o the_o law_n of_o caesar_n will_v have_v serve_v his_o turn_n and_o that_o he_o need_v no_o other_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n second_o he_o perceive_v that_o this_o do_v not_o much_o concern_v the_o case_n in_o hand_n three_o he_o see_v the_o jew_n be_v in_o haste_n and_o it_o be_v no_o time_n to_o talk_v any_o long_o with_o christ_n for_o the_o jew_n be_v afraid_a lest_o christ_n shall_v mollify_v the_o mind_n of_o the_o judge_n with_o his_o word_n which_o they_o know_v be_v very_o efficacious_a and_o penetrate_a last_o he_o have_v now_o learned_a by_o experience_n that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o most_o innocent_a jesus_n from_o pilate_n to_o herod_n that_o be_v from_o a_o wicked_a heathen_a to_o a_o ungodly_a mongrel_n jew_n for_o so_o it_o must_v be_v when_o you_o shall_v stand_v say_v he_o before_o king_n and_o governor_n that_o be_v before_o herod_n and_o pilate_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o it_o befall_v the_o apostle_n not_o long_o after_o and_o whereas_o christ_n be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o sometime_o to_o annas_n and_o sometime_o to_o caiaphas_n now_o to_o pilate_n and_o then_o to_o herod_n this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o divine_a counsel_n of_o god_n that_o every_o where_o he_o may_v have_v the_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o innocency_n as_o it_o befall_v christ_n to_o be_v drag_v hither_o and_o thither_o from_o judge_n to_o judge_n the_o same_o do_v still_o befall_v the_o poor_a in_o the_o court_n of_o man_n where_o they_o be_v always_o send_v from_o one_o judge_n to_o another_o till_o they_o perish_v and_o be_v utter_o undo_v act_v 4._o thus_o the_o poor_a be_v every_o where_o trample_v upon_o that_o he_o may_v be_v crucify_v with_o jesus_n but_o for_o all_o this_o we_o shall_v not_o become_v impatient_a for_o the_o world_n have_v no_o better_a usage_n for_o they_o of_o which_o christ_n himself_o have_v sufficient_a experience_n all_o these_o thing_n be_v for_o our_o trial_n and_o that_o every_o creature_n may_v be_v a_o witness_n of_o our_o trial_n and_o patience_n but_o to_o return_v again_o to_o herod_n when_o he_o see_v jesus_n bring_v before_o he_o he_o be_v exceed_v glad_a but_o this_o his_o joy_n be_v not_o good_a for_o he_o do_v not_o rejoice_v in_o the_o verity_n but_o in_o vanity_n he_o regard_v not_o christ_n doctrine_n or_o his_o own_o amendment_n but_o he_o look_v only_o for_o some_o new_a and_o strange_a thing_n because_o he_o have_v hear_v so_o much_o of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o miracle_n he_o be_v in_o hope_n that_o christ_n will_v work_v some_o wonder_n in_o his_o sight_n to_o satisfy_v his_o curiosity_n other_o desire_z signs_z to_o strengthen_v their_o faith_n but_o this_o man_n for_o his_o curiosity_n only_o he_o have_v of_o a_o long_a time_n desire_v to_o see_v christ_n but_o he_o will_v never_o vouchsafe_v to_o hear_v he_o preach_v nor_o never_o so_o much_o as_o invite_v christ_n to_o his_o house_n so_o that_o you_o may_v see_v there_o be_v no_o goodness_n in_o the_o man_n at_o all_o just_a as_o it_o be_v at_o this_o very_a day_n the_o major_a part_n of_o our_o grandee_n care_v little_a for_o christ_n or_o his_o doctrine_n god_n do_v know_v and_o in_o his_o time_n he_o will_v make_v all_o know_v what_o it_o be_v that_o every_o one_o do_v seek_v for_o in_o christ_n sure_a herod_n be_v a_o type_n of_o such_o who_o read_v and_o hear_v the_o the_o scripture_n only_o out_o of_o curiosity_n have_v no_o cordial_a respect_n at_o all_o to_o godliness_n herod_n question_v christ_n in_o many_o word_n but_o he_o be_v not_o think_v worthy_a to_o receive_v any_o answer_n much_o less_o to_o see_v the_o least_o sign_n or_o miracle_n do_v before_o he_o for_o why_o shall_v christ_n cast_v his_o pearl_n to_o such_o swine_n herod_n cruelty_n do_v not_o deserve_v to_o hear_v the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o speak_v after_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o ear_n nor_o judge_v after_o the_o outward_a appearance_n isa_n 11.3_o herod_n be_v one_o that_o do_v not_o seek_v after_o any_o true_a and_o solid_a matter_n so_o small_a a_o desire_n to_o search_v out_o the_o truth_n there_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o reveal_v all_o mystery_n pilate_n seek_v but_o spare_o yet_o sincere_o after_o the_o truth_n therefore_o he_o be_v count_v worthy_a to_o hear_v more_o but_o herod_n seek_v not_o the_o truth_n at_o all_o therefore_o christ_n speak_v not_o so_o much_o as_o one_o word_n in_o his_o presence_n which_o he_o will_v never_o have_v do_v have_v he_o be_v ask_v to_o another_o end_n viz._n to_o prove_v and_o make_v good_a his_o doctrine_n as_o he_o do_v before_o annas_n or_o to_o declare_v and_o reveal_v the_o be_v as_o a_o good_a shepherd_n that_o withstand_v the_o assault_n and_o break_v the_o snare_n and_o begin_v of_o thief_n and_o wolf_n to_o preserve_v the_o sheep_n commit_v to_o his_o charge_n learn_v we_o hence_o 1._o that_o we_o give_v not_o that_o which_o be_v holy_a unto_o dog_n nor_o lay_v open_a divine_a mystery_n to_o those_o who_o will_v scorn_v and_o scoff_n at_o they_o 2._o let_v we_o not_o brag_v and_o boast_v of_o our_o virtue_n and_o grace_n and_o of_o god_n gift_n and_o our_o good_a work_n to_o flourish_v it_o out_o before_o vain_a man_n as_o christ_n here_o will_v not_o put_v forth_o his_o power_n for_o they_o that_o affect_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n they_o get_v nothing_o but_o lose_v and_o shatter_v all_o the_o fruit_n of_o all_o their_o pain_n in_o themselves_o say_v of_o such_o as_o vapour_n out_o their_o good_a work_n with_o a_o trumpet_n that_o they_o have_v all_o their_o reward_n already_o 6._o mat._n 6._o but_o though_o christ_n say_v nothing_o the_o jew_n do_v not_o hold_v their_o peace_n they_o stand_v and_o accuse_v he_o vehment_o they_o have_v no_o other_o crime_n to_o produce_v against_o christ_n than_o what_o they_o have_v already_o charge_v he_o with_o before_o pilate_n yet_o they_o aggravate_v the_o same_o by_o their_o brawl_a clamour_n hope_v that_o herod_n will_v soon_o satisfy_v their_o desire_n then_o pilate_n do_v beside_o the_o long_o the_o business_n be_v delay_v and_o put_v off_o the_o more_o they_o be_v afraid_a that_o their_o cause_n will_v cool_v and_o at_o last_o be_v quite_o cashier_v the_o court._n therefore_o they_o press_v it_o on_o might_n and_o main_a they_o think_v pilate_n be_v a_o little_a too_o remiss_a in_o this_o business_n they_o conceit_v of_o themselves_o that_o they_o be_v such_o man_n that_o
