delusion_n of_o popish_a emissary_n who_o go_v about_o seek_v who_o they_o may_v deceive_v chap._n iii_o a_o answer_n to_o some_o proposition_n say_v to_o be_v unanswerable_a by_o protestant_n t._n in_o the_o next_o place_n i_o find_v your_o author_n at_o his_o scholar_n request_n furnish_v he_o with_o some_o unanswerable_a proposition_n as_o he_o vain_o style_v they_o against_o protestant_n of_o these_o he_o name_v eight_o take_v as_o he_o say_v from_o costerus_n the_o jesuit_n who_o therewith_o if_o we_o may_v believe_v he_o put_v all_o the_o able_a minister_n of_o germany_n and_o the_o low-countries_n to_o their_o wit_n end_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o one_o will_v wonder_v that_o there_o be_v any_o protestant_a minister_n or_o people_n leave_v in_o those_o country_n and_o that_o they_o be_v not_o all_o long_a since_o drive_v out_o of_o their_o wit_n and_o their_o religion_n into_o popery_n but_o have_v they_o never_o use_v those_o terrible_a argument_n of_o fire_n and_o sword_n prison_n and_o inquisition_n no_o body_n will_v much_o fear_v their_o pregnant_a argument_n difficult_a question_n or_o unanswerable_a proposition_n the_o two_o former_a we_o have_v already_o dispatch_v let_v we_o now_o survey_v the_o last_o in_o which_o i_o be_o apt_a to_o think_v we_o shall_v still_o find_v a_o tedious_a repetition_n of_o many_o the_o same_o thing_n that_o we_o have_v already_o often_o hear_v which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o we_o shall_v more_o brief_o pass_v over_o they_o l._n probably_n you_o will_v find_v it_o so_o however_o i_o think_v we_o shall_v soon_o have_v finish_v if_o you_o please_v to_o give_v the_o answer_n yourself_o to_o these_o his_o proposition_n which_o i_o shall_v exact_o recite_v to_o you_o t._n that_o shall_v be_v as_o you_o will_v but_o i_o hope_v you_o be_v not_o move_v with_o his_o formidable_a title_n of_o unanswerable_a proposition_n l._n i_o have_v no_o reason_n i_o be_o sure_a if_o they_o be_v like_o his_o unanswerable_a question_n world_n who_o do_v in_o all_o thing_n consent_v with_o either_o lutheran_n calvinist_n anabaptist_n or_o other_o sectary_n opinion_n nor_o shall_v ever_o any_o of_o the_o sectary_n prove_v the_o apostle_n or_o evangelist_n to_o have_v be_v of_o the_o lutheran_n calvinistical_a or_o any_o other_o new_a sect._n whence_o follow_v that_o luther_n and_o the_o rest_n have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o but_o only_o a_o new_a fancy_a invention_n which_o they_o adorn_v with_o the_o name_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o man_n of_o who_o the_o scripture_n in_o several_a place_n affirm_v that_o there_o will_v come_v in_o the_o latter_a time_n false_a prophet_n t._n as_o to_o lutheran_n or_o calvinist_n we_o own_o neither_o one_o name_n or_o other_o as_o have_v be_v often_o say_v nor_o be_v we_o concern_v to_o vindicate_v any_o particular_a opinion_n of_o this_o man_n or_o that_o though_o i_o reckon_v the_o doctrine_n of_o both_o as_o to_o the_o substance_n of_o it_o to_o be_v sound_a and_o good_a at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o it_o agree_v with_o that_o of_o our_o church_n which_o only_o we_o be_v oblige_v to_o answer_v for_o and_o easy_o we_o may_v though_o he_o revile_v we_o also_o as_o sectary_n since_o it_o be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o same_o christian_a doctrine_n which_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o sum_v up_o in_o the_o creed_n and_o this_o let_v he_o confute_v if_o he_o can_v or_o attempt_v it_o if_o he_o dare_v and_o in_o this_o doctrine_n we_o be_v sure_a both_o the_o apostle_n of_o old_a with_o the_o catholic_n church_n in_o their_o age_n and_o in_o all_o age_n since_o do_v full_o consent_v with_o we_o nor_o be_v it_o any_o new_a doctrine_n that_o our_o reformer_n bring_v in_o no_o but_o whilst_o they_o reject_v popish_a novelty_n they_o retain_v those_o truth_n of_o christianity_n which_o be_v as_o old_a as_o the_o first_o institution_n of_o religion_n what_o
mean_v he_o then_o by_o say_v that_o none_o of_o the_o ancient_n consent_v with_o we_o in_o all_o thing_n in_o every_o little_a opinion_n it_o be_v scarce_o likely_a there_o be_v or_o ever_o will_v be_v two_o man_n in_o the_o world_n that_o do_v exact_o agree_v no_o such_o agreement_n i_o be_o sure_a be_v to_o be_v find_v among_o the_o divine_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n but_o as_o sure_o it_o be_v that_o we_o agree_v with_o the_o apostle_n and_o ancient_a church_n in_o all_o thing_n material_a and_o substantial_a in_o all_o point_n of_o faith_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n for_o we_o embrace_v the_o same_o holy_a scripture_n and_o the_o same_o creed_n which_o they_o do_v what_o mean_v he_o again_o by_o say_v that_o the_o apostle_n be_v not_o of_o the_o lutheran_n or_o calvinistical_a sect_n what_o that_o they_o be_v not_o follower_n of_o luther_n or_o calvin_n they_o be_v not_o like_v indeed_o but_o it_o be_v enough_o i_o hope_v if_o luther_n and_o calvin_n be_v follower_n of_o the_o apostle_n thus_o what_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v that_o the_o apostle_n be_v not_o of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v it_o not_o sufficient_a that_o our_o church_n embrace_v the_o same_o faith_n which_o the_o apostle_n plant_v in_o all_o place_n where_o they_o come_v wherefore_o we_o may_v with_o great_a reason_n conclude_v contrary_a to_o his_o extravagant_a and_o most_o uncharitable_a inference_n that_o we_o have_v the_o true_a christian_a faith_n in_o our_o church_n and_o not_o any_o new-fangled_a invention_n etc._n etc._n if_o the_o apostle_n creed_n be_v a_o summary_n of_o the_o true_a faith_n i_o be_o sure_a we_o have_v it_o since_o we_o do_v most_o hearty_o embrace_v this_o creed_n and_o those_o holy_a scripture_n whence_o it_o be_v take_v and_o therefore_o we_o be_v none_o of_o those_o false_a prophet_n foretell_v in_o scripture_n for_o whilst_o we_o keep_v close_o to_o god_n word_n as_o the_o rule_n of_o our_o faith_n we_o be_v safe_a enough_o from_o deserve_v any_o such_o charge_n but_o how_o will_v they_o of_o the_o romish_a church_n acquit_v themselves_o from_o it_o whilst_o they_o have_v bring_v in_o many_o device_n of_o their_o own_o to_o which_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a christian_n be_v mere_a stranger_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v say_v to_o consent_v with_o papist_n therein_o such_o be_v their_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n transubstantiation_n etc._n etc._n such_o be_v their_o custom_n of_o pray_v in_o a_o unknown_a tongue_n have_v private_a mass_n where_o the_o priest_n only_o receive_v in_o their_o public_a assembly_n their_o half-communions_a give_v only_o the_o bread_n to_o the_o people_n when_o they_o do_v communicate_v etc._n etc._n none_o of_o these_o thing_n be_v ancient_o teach_v or_o use_v in_o the_o church_n and_o some_o of_o they_o but_o late_o establish_v among_o themselves_o these_o therefore_o we_o may_v just_o say_v be_v new-fangled_a invention_n devise_v of_o their_o own_o brain_n contrary_a to_o holy_a scripture_n and_o they_o who_o broach_n and_o maintain_v they_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n false_a teacher_n and_o probable_o some_o of_o those_o who_o be_v foretell_v in_o scripture_n at_o least_o they_o and_o their_o false_a doctrine_n be_v condemn_v by_o it_o and_o that_o be_v enough_o for_o our_o purpose_n l._n it_o be_v so_o indeed_o and_o enough_o have_v you_o say_v to_o weaken_v and_o refute_v this_o his_o first_o proposition_n if_o the_o rest_n have_v no_o more_o strength_n they_o be_v far_o from_o deserve_v that_o great_a title_n he_o give_v they_o i_o shall_v rehearse_v the_o next_o if_o you_o please_v t._n present_o you_o shall_v only_o take_v notice_n from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v how_o plain_a the_o answer_n be_v to_o that_o the_o christian_a faith_n they_o keep_v and_o do_v still_o keep_v the_o apostle_n creed_n though_o they_o have_v add_v several_a new_a article_n to_o it_o and_o that_o especial_o in_o their_o council_n of_o trent_n which_o appear_v not_o in_o the_o world_n quite_o so_o soon_o as_o luther_n now_o the_o true_o catholic_n ancient_n christian_a faith_n we_o receive_v but_o their_o new-coined_a article_n we_o reject_v so_o that_o before_o the_o reformation_n our_o religion_n be_v in_o their_o church_n as_o gold_n in_o a_o heap_n of_o dirt_n or_o as_o one_o long_a since_o express_v it_o as_o the_o pure_a flower_n among_o the_o bran_n or_o as_o corn_n among_o tare_n and_o by_o the_o reformation_n we_o only_o wash_v away_o this_o dirt_n sift_v out_o the_o bran_n and_o pluck_v up_o the_o tare_n but_o the_o old_a religion_n the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n remain_v pure_a and_o entire_a l._n but_o say_v they_o where_o do_v the_o apostle_n teach_v that_o there_o be_v no_o purgatory_n no_o transubstantiation_n &_o c_o yet_o thus_o the_o protestant_n teach_v and_o therefore_o they_o consent_v not_o with_o the_o apostle_n t._n yes_o certain_o but_o they_o do_v for_o as_o i_o have_v former_o tell_v you_o we_o therefore_o say_v there_o be_v no_o purgatory_n etc._n etc._n because_o the_o apostle_n say_v no_o such_o thing_n which_o be_v sure_a they_o will_v have_v do_v have_v they_o be_v true_a since_o they_o be_v such_o weighty_a and_o material_a point_n as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n now_o account_v they_o what_o the_o apostle_n teach_v that_o we_o receive_v what_o they_o teach_v not_o we_o refuse_v as_o know_v they_o be_v faithful_a in_o deliver_v all_o that_o they_o receive_v of_o the_o lord_n judge_n then_o which_o of_o we_o consent_v most_o with_o the_o apostle_n we_o who_o receive_v all_o their_o doctrine_n but_o reject_v what_o they_o never_o teach_v of_o they_o who_o teach_v these_o new_a doctrine_n which_o neither_o the_o apostle_n nor_o any_o of_o their_o first_o follower_n ever_o deliver_v nor_o be_v they_o for_o some_o hundred_o year_n after_o general_o profess_v so_o much_o as_o in_o their_o own_o church_n yea_o these_o novelty_n be_v never_o direct_o and_o formal_o establish_v as_o article_n of_o faith_n and_o make_v necessary_a for_o all_o man_n of_o their_o communion_n to_o believe_v till_o in_o these_o latter_a age_n some_o of_o they_o as_o i_o take_v it_o not_o till_o the_o very_a council_n of_o trent_n not_o yet_o a_o hundred_o and_o fifty_o year_n since_o which_o they_o call_v a_o general_n council_n though_o pack_v up_o of_o bishop_n of_o their_o own_o sect_n and_o the_o major_a part_n the_o pope_n own_o creature_n who_o use_v all_o the_o foul_a art_n imaginable_a to_o carry_v thing_n according_a to_o his_o humour_n as_o be_v plain_o to_o be_v see_v in_o the_o history_n of_o that_o council_n write_v by_o some_o of_o their_o own_o church_n now_o in_o respect_n of_o these_o article_n in_o which_o popery_n chief_o consist_v we_o may_v with_o great_a reason_n retort_v the_o question_n and_o demand_v where_o be_v your_o religion_n before_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n and_o be_v the_o apostle_n of_o the_o same_o opinion_n with_o these_o trent_n father_n compare_v their_o creed_n together_o and_o it_o will_v easy_o appear_v yea_o compare_v that_o of_o trent_n with_o any_o other_o of_o the_o old_a creed_n such_o as_o the_o nicene_n or_o constantinopolitan_n and_o it_o will_v easy_o appear_v what_o addition_n they_o have_v make_v to_o the_o ancient_a faith_n whereas_o our_o church_n receive_v those_o very_o same_o creed_n without_o addition_n or_o diminution_n to_o conclude_v this_o though_o we_o ready_o grant_v their_o popish_a error_n to_o have_v be_v before_o our_o reformation_n from_o they_o for_o they_o can_v not_o be_v cast_v out_o before_o they_o be_v bring_v in_o yet_o the_o great_a truth_n of_o our_o religion_n be_v teach_v and_o receive_v in_o the_o church_n some_o age_n before_o those_o error_n be_v ever_o hear_v of_o our_o religion_n then_o do_v not_o first_o appear_v in_o luther_n day_n when_o the_o reformation_n be_v wrought_v but_o be_v as_o old_a as_o since_o the_o time_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o pure_a christianity_n resorm_v from_o the_o error_n and_o abuse_n of_o popery_n these_o thing_n i_o have_v already_o oft_o mention_v but_o can_v not_o well_o avoid_v the_o repetition_n of_o they_o on_o occasion_n of_o this_o his_o first_o proposition_n which_o by_o this_o time_n you_o see_v

ever_o he_o require_v man_n to_o believe_v any_o thing_n direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o evidence_n of_o their_o sense_n to_o believe_v it_o be_v dark_a as_o midnight_n when_o they_o see_v the_o sun_n shine_v at_o noonday_n to_o believe_v the_o same_o man_n to_o lie_v dead_a in_o his_o grave_n who_o they_o see_v alive_a walk_v before_o they_o for_o at_o this_o rate_n all_o our_o saviour_n miracle_n have_v be_v wrought_v in_o vain_a if_o man_n must_v not_o believe_v their_o own_o eye_n as_o we_o use_v to_o say_v for_o we_o must_v consider_v that_o almighty_a god_n have_v so_o frame_v our_o nature_n that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v direct_v and_o guide_v by_o our_o sense_n in_o those_o matter_n that_o proper_o belong_v to_o they_o nor_o can_v we_o i_o think_v in_o this_o present_a state_n have_v more_o clear_a and_o full_a assurance_n of_o any_o thing_n than_o what_o our_o sense_n when_o sound_a and_o perfect_a convey_v to_o we_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v say_v our_o saviour_n take_v this_o way_n to_o give_v assurance_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o his_o gospel_n and_o of_o his_o resurrection_n by_o that_o satisfaction_n he_o give_v to_o the_o very_a sense_n of_o men._n thus_o st._n john_n when_o he_o will_v give_v the_o clear_a and_o full_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o christian_a doctrine_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o which_o we_o have_v hear_v which_o we_o have_v see_v with_o our_o eye_n which_o our_o hand_n have_v handle_v declare_v we_o unto_o you_o 1_o joh._n 1._o 1_o 2_o 3._o now_o all_o this_o may_v assure_v we_o that_o those_o word_n this_o be_v my_o body_n be_v not_o to_o be_v take_v in_o such_o a_o sense_n as_o will_v engage_v we_o to_o the_o belief_n of_o transubstantiation_n nay_o the_o word_n of_o god_n itself_o assure_v we_o that_o they_o be_v certainty_n of_o any_o thing_n whatever_o in_o a_o manner_n utter_o destroy_v how_o can_v i_o tell_v that_o i_o tread_v upon_o the_o earth_n that_o i_o see_v the_o heaven_n over_o my_o head_n or_o the_o sun_n shine_v in_o the_o firmament_n in_o these_o and_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o i_o think_v that_o i_o see_v or_o hear_v my_o sense_n may_v be_v impose_v upon_o as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o present_a case_n and_o how_o then_o can_v i_o be_v sure_a that_o any_o revelation_n be_v ever_o make_v from_o god_n to_o man_n or_o how_o can_v any_o man_n be_v sure_a of_o it_o though_o a_o voice_n come_v to_o he_o from_o heaven_n or_o a_o vision_n appear_v to_o he_o all_o this_o may_v be_v but_o idle_a fancy_n and_o delusion_n his_o hear_v and_o his_o sight_n be_v not_o to_o be_v trust_v yea_o let_v this_o opinion_n be_v admit_v and_o how_o can_v we_o be_v certain_a of_o the_o truth_n of_o that_o which_o god_n have_v in_o his_o word_n reveal_v for_o if_o he_o deceive_v i_o one_o way_n why_o he_o will_v not_o deceive_v i_o in_o his_o word_n why_o may_v i_o not_o from_o the_o same_o goodness_n argue_v that_o he_o will_v not_o deceive_v i_o in_o his_o work_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v do_v it_o in_o the_o latter_a why_o may_v he_o not_o in_o the_o former_a also_o l._n they_o may_v say_v this_o be_v a_o particular_a case_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o sense_n may_v herein_o be_v mistake_v yet_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o suspect_v they_o at_o other_o time_n t._n a_o particular_a case_n it_o be_v indeed_o and_o such_o as_o nothing_o like_o it_o can_v be_v instance_a in_o nor_o yet_o any_o good_a reason_n assign_v why_o our_o sense_n may_v not_o at_o any_o other_o time_n be_v deceive_v as_o well_o as_o in_o this_o matter_n but_o strange_a of_o all_o it_o be_v that_o we_o have_v no_o warning_n give_v we_o in_o scripture_n not_o to_o trust_v our_o sense_n in_o this_o particular_a case_n though_o in_o all_o other_o we_o may_v nor_o do_v we_o find_v any_o thing_n say_v to_o take_v off_o the_o prejudice_n that_o may_v arise_v in_o man_n mind_n against_o so_o strange_a a_o doctrine_n we_o hear_v of_o no_o objection_n make_v of_o old_a against_o it_o by_o the_o enemy_n of_o christianity_n nor_o of_o any_o answer_n give_v to_o silence_n or_o prevent_v such_o objection_n nay_o on_o the_o contrary_a as_o i_o have_v say_v when_o the_o capernaite_v mistake_v our_o saviour_n meaning_n he_o let_v they_o know_v that_o his_o discourse_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n joh._n 6._o 63._o thus_o certain_o the_o apostle_n understand_v it_o as_o also_o those_o word_n this_o be_v my_o body_n else_o sure_o we_o shall_v have_v hear_v of_o their_o doubt_n and_o objection_n at_o least_o they_o will_v have_v make_v some_o further_a enquiry_n about_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o they_o else_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o we_o never_o find_v the_o least_o mention_n of_o this_o same_o doctrine_n in_o any_o of_o the_o apostle_n sermon_n or_o in_o the_o epistle_n write_v to_o any_o of_o the_o church_n nay_o though_o there_o be_v so_o fair_a a_o occasion_n offer_v to_o st._n paul_n when_o he_o discourse_n about_o it_o by_o the_o better_a sort_n of_o christian_n by_o what_o weak_a argument_n it_o be_v defend_v by_o what_o ill_a art_n in_o some_o place_n establish_v what_o bad_a effect_n it_o produce_v and_o how_o by_o degree_n the_o people_n be_v sink_v into_o all_o that_o gross_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n which_o have_v overspread_v the_o roman_a church_n and_o particular_o this_o kingdom_n at_o of_o it_o be_v oblige_v to_o say_v over_o the_o whole_a rosary_n once_o in_o a_o week_n at_o least_o and_o these_o prayer_n be_v to_o be_v offer_v up_o in_o a_o certain_a manner_n to_o almighty_a god_n in_o honour_n of_o the_o bless_a virgin_n now_o lest_o this_o shall_v be_v two_o burdensome_a there_o be_v provision_n make_v that_o if_o they_o have_v any_o lawful_a impediment_n they_o may_v fulsome_a ridiculous_a stuff_n let_v we_o return_v to_o your_o author_n and_o see_v what_o he_o say_v for_o this_o manner_n of_o pray_v which_o a_o parrot_n may_v go_v near_o to_o learn_v and_o use_v it_o with_o as_o much_o devotion_n as_o multitude_n of_o they_o l._n he_o say_v that_o the_o ave-mary_n be_v use_v sixty_o three_o time_n because_o the_o bless_a virgin_n mary_n live_v just_a so_o many_o year_n t._n a_o wise_a reason_n true_o but_o i_o wonder_v where_o he_o have_v so_o good_a intelligence_n some_o of_o her_o worshipper_n it_o be_v like_a have_v hear_v it_o from_o her_o own_o mouth_n for_o heretofore_o nothing_o more_o common_a than_o for_o she_o to_o appear_v to_o they_o and_o talk_v familiar_o with_o they_o if_o we_o may_v believe_v their_o own_o legend_n which_o i_o confess_v be_v somewhat_o hard_a to_o do_v yet_o i_o grant_v there_o be_v as_o much_o certainty_n in_o the_o story_n of_o her_o age_n as_o strength_n in_o the_o argument_n take_v from_o it_o that_o be_v just_a none_o at_o all_o why_o do_v they_o not_o by_o this_o reason_n say_v the_o lords-prayer_n thirty_o three_o time_n because_o our_o saviour_n live_v so_o many_o year_n and_o it_o may_v also_o be_v ask_v why_o but_o one_o lords-prayer_n for_o nine_o ave-maries_n but_o wave_v these_o thing_n let_v we_o hear_v his_o pretence_n for_o this_o odd_a way_n of_o pray_v by_o run_v over_o the_o same_o word_n so_o many_o time_n together_o as_o if_o they_o will_v make_v up_o with_o the_o number_n what_o they_o want_v in_o weight_n and_o devotion_n and_o then_o tell_v they_o by_o their_o bead_n as_o if_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o be_v someway_o cheat_v if_o they_o do_v not_o keep_v so_o exact_a a_o reckon_n certain_o we_o have_v neither_o precept_n nor_o example_n in_o scripture_n resolve_v you_o he_o may_v as_o well_o talk_v of_o say_v it_o twelve_o time_n in_o honour_n of_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n and_o then_o seventy_o time_n for_o the_o seventy_o disciple_n and_o after_o that_o as_o oft_o as_o you_o please_v in_o honour_n of_o what_o you_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o for_o they_o forsooth_o have_v a_o certain_a peculiar_a manner_n of_o offer_v up_o their_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o honour_n to_o other_o person_n and_o thing_n which_o i_o confess_v i_o be_o utter_o ignorant_a of_o nor_o do_v i_o think_v they_o themselves_o can_v give_v a_o rational_a account_n of_o church_n which_o be_v no_o part_n of_o true_a and_o save_a religion_n nor_o have_v ever_o be_v so_o account_v by_o the_o generality_n of_o christian_n and_o though_o our_o ancestor_n may_v have_v
