principle_n and_o go_v astray_o from_o the_o centre_n of_o his_o happiness_n no_o doubt_n antiquity_n be_v venerable_a but_o it_o must_v be_v in_o a_o good_a cause_n and_o where_o truth_n and_o that_o join_v together_o the_o argument_n be_v persuasive_a and_o may_v be_v call_v invincible_a but_o a_o thing_n be_v not_o therefore_o true_a because_o it_o be_v ancient_a nor_o do_v it_o command_v assent_v because_o of_o its_o uncommon_a pedigree_n sin_n and_o error_n lose_v little_a of_o their_o deformity_n by_o appeal_n to_o ancient_a time_n and_o a_o error_n be_v so_o much_o the_o worse_o by_o how_o much_o it_o defend_v itself_o by_o the_o practice_n of_o former_a age_n idolatry_n and_o all_o the_o vice_n in_o the_o world_n may_v shelter_v themselves_o under_o this_o roof_n and_o there_o be_v no_o villainy_n so_o great_a but_o man_n may_v find_v a_o precedent_n two_o or_o three_o thousand_o year_n ago_o the_o priest_n of_o the_o temple_n of_o diana_n at_o ephesus_n call_v the_o wicker-image_n of_o that_o goddess_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d fall_v down_o from_o jupiter_n mere_o because_o it_o be_v ancient_a and_o the_o temple_n have_v be_v seven_o time_n ruin_v and_o build_v up_o again_o and_o this_o image_n still_o preserve_v be_v to_o they_o a_o argument_n that_o this_o worship_n must_v be_v lawful_a indeed_o at_o this_o rate_n a_o man_n may_v even_o defend_v sodomy_n with_o the_o romish_a archbishop_n joannes_n casa_n because_o it_o be_v practise_v in_o the_o city_n which_o god_n destroy_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n and_o the_o jew_n will_v have_v have_v a_o good_a plea_n for_o their_o adoration_n of_o the_o queen_n of_o heaven_n because_o their_o father_n have_v be_v use_v to_o it_o this_o very_a argument_n make_v the_o allegation_n of_o the_o roman_a church_n from_o antiquity_n ridiculous_a and_o they_o may_v as_o well_o espouse_v the_o heresy_n of_o ebian_n and_o cerinthus_n because_o they_o live_v in_o and_o about_o the_o age_n of_o the_o holy_a apostle_n when_o god_n have_v give_v a_o standard_n of_o truth_n that_o must_v be_v the_o rule_n whereby_o truth_n and_o error_n must_v be_v conclude_v and_o when_o that_o say_v a_o thing_n be_v true_a it_o be_v not_o its_o be_v revive_v or_o teach_v but_o yesterday_o that_o can_v make_v it_o false_a and_o whatever_o be_v contrary_a to_o that_o form_n of_o sound_a word_n must_v be_v erroneous_a and_o false_a though_o it_o be_v as_o old_a as_o the_o rebellion_n of_o corah_n dathan_n and_o abiram_n the_o worship_n of_o image_n be_v not_o therefore_o lawful_a because_o irene_n a_o superstitious_a woman_n 900_o year_n ago_o get_v a_o company_n of_o illiterate_a and_o passionate_a man_n together_o who_o decree_v it_o in_o a_o council_n nor_o be_v sedition_n and_o disobedience_n to_o magistrate_n therefore_o justifiable_a because_o gregory_n ii_o pope_n of_o rome_n in_o the_o eight_o century_n shake_v off_o the_o authority_n of_o leo_n isaurus_n his_o emperor_n and_o therefore_o let_v none_o of_o you_o plead_v for_o any_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v the_o fashion_n nor_o allow_v themselves_o in_o action_n offensive_a to_o god_n holiness_n because_o it_o have_v be_v the_o custom_n of_o the_o country_n to_o do_v so_o for_o many_o age_n this_o will_v be_v but_o a_o poor_a defence_n in_o the_o last_o day_n to_o allege_v that_o you_o follow_v the_o sinful_a practice_n of_o your_o ancestor_n or_o to_o say_v it_o be_v unmannerly_a to_o depart_v from_o that_o which_o be_v do_v before_o you_o for_o many_o generation_n to_o be_v sure_a man_n be_v good_a before_o they_o be_v bad_a and_o there_o be_v a_o golden_a age_n before_o that_o of_o iron_n take_v place_n in_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o if_o antiquity_n be_v a_o motive_n nothing_o can_v challenge_v your_o embrace_n more_o than_o righteousness_n and_o dominion_n over_o your_o appetite_n and_o passion_n for_o that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n before_o mankind_n know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n murder_n be_v as_o ancient_a as_o the_o time_n of_o cain_n yet_o no_o civilise_a nation_n under_o the_o cope_n of_o heaven_n will_v allow_v of_o it_o because_o of_o its_o antiquity_n so_o far_o from_o it_o that_o in_o all_o country_n it_o be_v order_v to_o be_v punish_v with_o the_o death_n of_o the_o insolent_a creature_n which_o call_v i_o to_o the_o ii_o observation_n that_o murder_n be_v a_o crime_n which_o a_o magistrate_n must_v by_o no_o mean_n suffer_v to_o go_v unpunished_a for_o it_o have_v be_v say_v thou_o shall_v not_o kill_v and_o whosoever_o shall_v kill_v shall_v be_v in_o danger_n of_o the_o judgement_n the_o substance_n of_o this_o have_v be_v say_v by_o almighty_a god_n as_o well_o as_o by_o they_o of_o old_a time_n and_o so_o far_o as_o god_n have_v say_v it_o it_o be_v a_o law_n unalterable_a murder_n be_v a_o true_o cry_v sin_n for_o the_o voice_n of_o thy_o brother_n blood_n cry_v unto_o i_o from_o the_o ground_n say_v god_n gen._n iu._n 10_o this_o be_v a_o crime_n which_o nature_n itself_o tremble_v at_o and_o yet_o we_o see_v there_o be_v wretch_n and_o monster_n who_o can_v steel_n and_o harden_v their_o conscience_n against_o the_o horror_n of_o it_o but_o god_n thunder_v against_o it_o from_o heaven_n and_o because_o the_o crime_n be_v so_o great_a he_o have_v make_v a_o law_n and_o give_v it_o to_o all_o mankind_n that_o whoso_o shed_v man_n blood_n by_o man_n i._n e._n by_o the_o magistrate_n shall_v his_o blood_n be_v shed_v gen._n ix_o 6_o nay_o if_o a_o wild_a beast_n tear_v a_o man_n who_o be_v go_v about_o his_o lawful_a occasion_n in_o piece_n though_o a_o irrational_a creature_n god_n will_v strike_v that_o beast_n dead_a because_o it_o kill_v sanctius_n his_o animal_n a_o noble_a and_o more_o sacred_a fabric_n so_o tender_a be_v god_n of_o the_o life_n of_o man_n nor_o will_v he_o suffer_v his_o tabernacle_n or_o sanctuary_n to_o be_v a_o refuge_n for_o such_o a_o barbarous_a wretch_n the_o horn_n of_o the_o altar_n can_v not_o save_v the_o offender_n and_o from_o the_o very_a temple_n he_o be_v to_o be_v drag_v to_o the_o gallow_n or_o place_n of_o execution_n the_o whole_a country_n come_v to_o be_v defile_v by_o the_o horrid_a crime_n where_o it_o go_v unpunished_a and_o that_o magistrate_n make_v his_o soul_n black_a with_o gild_n that_o connive_n at_o the_o inhuman_a action_n or_o out_o of_o respect_n to_o greatness_n or_o rank_n or_o quality_n pardon_v the_o intolerable_a extravagance_n where_o this_o remain_v unpunished_a when_o know_v a_o nation_n fall_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n and_o whatever_o judgement_n befall_v they_o a_o ounce_n of_o the_o unpunished_a murder_n as_o the_o jew_n say_v of_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o golden_a calf_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o ingredient_n of_o their_o calamity_n we_o have_v a_o distinction_n in_o our_o law_n betwixt_o mans-slaughter_n and_o murder_n a_o distinction_n which_o i_o wish_v do_v not_o too_o often_o cover_v that_o bloody_a crime_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v avenge_v by_o public_a justice_n the_o word_n of_o god_n know_v no_o such_o distinction_n and_o though_o it_o provide_v for_o chance-medley_o and_o give_v pardon_n to_o the_o man_n that_o unaware_o and_o without_o any_o intent_n to_o kill_v prove_v the_o occasion_n of_o another_o death_n yet_o this_o be_v nothing_o to_o that_o act_n which_o wrath_n and_o anger_n whether_o sudden_a or_o premeditate_v do_v produce_v to_o the_o horror_n of_o the_o creation_n neither_o do_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n nor_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n in_o this_o case_n before_o we_o reverse_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o god_n be_v so_o resolute_a that_o the_o magistrate_n shall_v punish_v such_o offender_n with_o death_n that_o where_o they_o do_v not_o himself_z sometime_o take_v the_o sword_n in_o hand_n and_o execute_v the_o presumptuous_a destroyer_n of_o his_o image_n nay_o many_o time_n make_v the_o in_o your_o father_n house_n these_o be_v the_o portion_n of_o his_o child_n this_o world_n indeed_o be_v inhabit_v by_o his_o friend_n but_o the_o great_a part_n of_o those_o who_o dwell_v in_o the_o their_o earthly_a house_n of_o this_o tabernacle_n shall_v be_v dissolve_v there_o will_v fall_v to_o their_o share_n a_o build_n of_o god_n a_o house_n not_o make_v with_o hand_n eternal_a in_o the_o heaven_n sermon_n xxxvii_o st._n matth._n ch._n v._o ver._n 46_o 47._o for_o if_o you_o love_v they_o which_o love_v you_o what_o reward_n have_v you_o do_v not_o even_o the_o publican_n the_o same_o and_o if_o you_o salute_v your_o brethren_n only_o what_o do_v you_o more_o than_o other_o do_v not_o even_o the_o publican_n so_o have_v be_v best_a understand_v by_o the_o preamble_n because_o that_o give_v a_o account_n of_o the_o occasion_n to_o these_o word_n by_o the_o precede_a among_o the_o rule_n of_o holy_a live_n prescribe_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o his_o disciple_n in_o this_o chapter_n that_o of_o love_a our_o enemy_n bless_v they_o that_o curse_v we_o and_o do_v good_a to_o they_o that_o hate_v we_o and_o pray_v for_o they_o which_o despiteful_o use_v we_o be_v most_o remarkable_a he_o be_v sensible_a flesh_n and_o blood_n will_v raise_v objection_n against_o this_o duty_n and_o therefore_o he_o back_v it_o with_o argument_n great_a and_o powerful_a to_o let_v we_o see_v how_o equitable_a and_o reasonable_a it_o be_v in_o the_o precede_a verse_n he_o set_v before_o we_o the_o example_n of_o god_n who_o receive_v great_a affront_v and_o injury_n and_o abuse_n from_o sinful_a man_n than_o one_o man_n can_v possible_o receive_v from_o another_o and_o yet_o as_o ill_o as_o that_o supreme_a be_v be_v use_v he_o let_v his_o sun_n rise_v upon_o the_o evil_a and_o the_o good_a and_o send_v rain_n upon_o the_o just_a and_o unjust_a the_o next_o motive_n be_v take_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o christian_a discipline_n which_o transcend_v all_o other_o religion_n in_o the_o world_n and_o who_o very_a design_n it_o be_v to_o raise_v man_n above_o the_o common_a level_n of_o nature_n and_o education_n and_o consequent_o require_v great_a degree_n of_o love_n and_o goodness_n to_o man_n than_o natural_a man_n heathen_n and_o sinner_n and_o publican_n usual_o pay_v for_o if_o you_o love_v they_o which_o love_v you_o what_o reward_n have_v you_o do_v not_o even_o the_o publican_n the_o same_o and_o if_o you_o salute_v your_o brethren_n only_o what_o do_v you_o more_o than_o other_o do_v not_o even_o the_o publican_n so_o the_o publican_n here_o mention_v be_v person_n that_o sit_v at_o the_o receipt_n of_o custom_n or_o receive_v the_o custom_n due_a to_o the_o roman_a emperor_n in_o palestinae_n from_o commodity_n import_v or_o export_v such_o a_o one_o be_v matthew_n the_o writer_n of_o this_o gospel_n matth._n ix_o 9_o and_o zachaeus_n luk._n nineteeen_o 2_o i_o e._n before_o they_o be_v convert_v for_o though_o tertullian_n will_v not_o allow_v that_o any_o jew_n be_v customhouse_n man_n or_o will_v suffer_v themselves_o to_o be_v employ_v in_o the_o receipt_n of_o custom_n yet_o that_o in_o this_o point_n he_o be_v under_o a_o very_a great_a mistake_n be_v evident_a from_o the_o example_n of_o matthew_n and_o zacchaeus_n who_o be_v both_o jew_n and_o of_o the_o stock_n of_o abraham_n mar._n two_o 14_o luk._n nineteeen_o 9_o it_o be_v possible_a there_o may_v not_o be_v so_o many_o jew_n of_o that_o profession_n as_o there_o be_v greek_n or_o roman_n yet_o that_o even_o the_o jew_n do_v sometime_o court_n and_o accept_v of_o these_o employment_n and_o personal_o discharge_v they_o what_o have_v be_v allege_v be_v as_o good_a as_o demonstration_n these_o publican_n be_v proper_o gatherer_n or_o receiver_n of_o the_o with_o and_o such_o be_v the_o publican_n in_o the_o text._n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v common_o look_v upon_o as_o extortioner_n unjust_a unrighteous_a and_o oppressor_n and_o among_o the_o jew_n particular_o they_o have_v so_o ill_a a_o name_n that_o they_o be_v call_v sinner_n by_o way_n of_o eminency_n and_o a_o heathen_a and_o a_o publican_n be_v with_o they_o convertible_a term_n nay_o the_o pharisee_n seem_v to_o exclude_v they_o from_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n which_o be_v one_o great_a reason_n i_o suppose_v why_o many_o of_o they_o i_o mean_v of_o these_o publican_n do_v so_o ready_o close_a and_o join_v with_o christ_n when_o he_o preach_v to_o they_o repentance_n and_o offer_v they_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n but_o though_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o great_a to_o man_n of_o their_o own_o religion_n this_o be_v premise_v the_o observation_n the_o text_n afford_v may_v be_v reduce_v to_o these_o three_o proposition_n i._o even_o wicked_a man_n do_v and_o christ_n worthy_a of_o a_o civil_a salutation_n a_o civility_n not_o deny_v by_o heathen_n and_o publican_n to_o the_o mean_a of_o their_o brethren_n and_o of_o this_o nature_n be_v those_o false_a salutation_n and_o pretend_a civility_n of_o dissemble_a and_o hypocrital_a man_n such_o as_o joab_n and_o other_o who_o word_n be_v soft_a than_o butter_n but_o war_n be_v in_o their_o heart_n who_o seem_v indeed_o to_o love_v those_o who_o love_v they_o but_o it_o be_v from_o the_o tooth_n outward_a for_o they_o hate_v they_o within_o there_o need_v no_o gospel_n to_o condemn_v such_o bold_a and_o dare_a sinner_n the_o light_n of_o nature_n will_v serve_v to_o do_v it_o though_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o the_o gospel_n under_o which_o they_o live_v and_o which_o teach_v they_o great_a and_o better_a thing_n will_v help_v to_o aggravate_v both_o their_o sin_n and_o punishment_n and_o this_o will_v justify_v our_o three_o enquiry_n iii_o how_o man_n come_v to_o sink_v so_o low_a so_o much_o beneath_o heathen_n and_o publican_n as_o to_o act_v against_o this_o natural_a principle_n and_o 1._o they_o have_v very_o weak_a dull_a and_o dark_a apprehension_n of_o the_o worth_n and_o nature_n of_o christianity_n and_o indeed_o of_o any_o religion_n some_o religion_n or_o other_o they_o must_v profess_v and_o since_o providence_n let_v they_o stumble_v upon_o the_o christian_a they_o embrace_v it_o but_o cansider_v not_o what_o it_o import_v how_o holy_a its_o precept_n be_v how_o rich_a its_o promise_n how_o ample_a its_o advantage_n how_o clear_a its_o revelation_n how_o great_a its_o excellency_n and_o how_o just_o it_o require_v great_a strictness_n than_o either_o judaisme_n or_o heathenism_n or_o any_o other_o religion_n in_o the_o world_n this_o consideration_n will_v make_v they_o dread_a offend_v against_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o make_v they_o ashamed_a to_o think_v that_o they_o who_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v more_o than_o other_o shall_v not_o do_v so_o much_o as_o other_o these_o thing_n be_v no_o object_n of_o their_o thought_n they_o have_v a_o very_a low_a opinion_n of_o the_o religion_n they_o profess_v and_o therefore_o be_v not_o concern_v nor_o fright_v if_o they_o fall_v below_o the_o grandeur_n of_o it_o low_a than_o heathen_n and_o publican_n and_o consequent_o do_v not_o love_v those_o who_o love_v they_o 2._o their_o lust_n be_v strong_a than_o their_o religion_n this_o natural_a principle_n of_o love_v those_o who_o love_v they_o be_v agreeable_a enough_o to_o their_o reason_n and_o speculation_n but_o some_o predominant_a lust_n either_o avarice_n or_o ambition_n or_o pride_n or_o envy_n or_o lasciviousness_n or_o delight_n in_o vain_a company_n or_o something_o their_o sickly_a desire_n crave_v and_o which_o they_o fancy_v their_o reciprocal_a love_n will_v hinder_v they_o from_o some_o such_o lust_n i_o say_v reign_v and_o domineer_a within_o it_o damp_n and_o drown_v that_o reciprocal_a love_n they_o owe_v to_o those_o that_o love_v they_o a_o man_n be_v tempt_v when_o he_o be_v draw_v away_o of_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o entice_v say_v st._n james_n ch._n i_o 14_o as_o natural_a as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v kind_a to_o those_o who_o be_v so_o to_o we_o yet_o if_o a_o man_n give_v way_n to_o some_o violent_a lust_n or_o desire_n and_o le_fw-fr we_o that_o have_v the_o upperhand_n it_o will_v draw_v and_o force_v the_o man_n away_o from_o the_o most_o easy_a and_o most_o familiar_a and_o most_o rational_a duty_n whatsoever_o not_o to_o mention_v that_o if_o the_o party_n who_o be_v or_o have_v be_v kind_a be_v defective_a in_o one_o act_n if_o after_o nineteen_o kindness_n he_o fail_v to_o do_v the_o twenty_o this_o shall_v be_v think_v by_o such_o person_n a_o argument_n sufficient_a to_o justify_v their_o want_n of_o reciprocal_a love_n and_o affection_n but_o this_o show_v the_o disingenuity_n of_o their_o temper_n and_o that_o a_o evil_a spirit_n have_v take_v possession_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o commit_v a_o rape_n upon_o the_o dictate_v of_o their_o reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o thus_o man_n come_v to_o act_v against_o principle_n which_o even_a heathen_n and_o publican_n do_v observe_v inference_n i._o i_o observe_v here_o that_o religion_n be_v not_o intend_v to_o make_v man_n clownish_a and_o uncivil_a for_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o text_n suppose_v salute_v our_o brethren_n to_o be_v not_o only_o lawful_a but_o a_o natural_a duty_n which_o god_n expect_v of_o man_n as_o men._n indeed_o he_o will_v have_v we_o do_v more_o than_o this_o come_v to_o and_o extend_v it_o even_o to_o enemy_n and_o to_o person_n who_o have_v wrong_v affront_v and_o abuse_v we_o but_o he_o do_v not_o deny_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o it_o but_o establish_v this_o low_a duty_n which_o even_o heathen_n and_o publican_n count_v reasonable_a and_o therefore_o that_o sect_n which_o place_n religion_n in_o forbear_v all_o external_a salutation_n sin_n against_o a_o natural_a duty_n the_o gospel_n do_v not_o abolish_v but_o exalt_v all_o natural_a duty_n and_o set_v they_o in_o a_o bright_a light_n and_o that_o therefore_o if_o salute_v our_o brethren_n or_o fellow_n christian_n be_v a_o natural_a duty_n it_o must_v be_v much_o more_o a_o christian_a duty_n so_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o hat_n seem_v rather_o a_o spirit_n of_o pride_n and_o delusion_n than_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o incline_v the_o soul_n to_o assability_n courteousness_n and_o civility_n and_o respect_n to_o superior_n nor_o must_v the_o condescension_n of_o superior_n to_o the_o mean_a capacity_n or_o their_o humility_n make_v we_o lay_v aside_o the_o respect_n we_o owe_v they_o for_o this_o be_v to_o give_v occasion_n that_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n be_v evil_a speak_v of_o and_o to_o bring_v a_o evil_a report_n upon_o the_o good_a land_n it_o be_v true_a in_o christ_n we_o be_v all_o equal_a with_o respect_n to_o the_o privilege_n and_o advantage_n that_o come_v by_o christ_n they_o be_v promise_v or_o tender_v to_o all_o but_o that_o do_v not_o destroy_v the_o external_a respect_n obeisance_n and_o civility_n we_o owe_v to_o person_n of_o different_a rank_n and_o quality_n or_o to_o man_n who_o providence_n have_v raise_v above_o the_o common_a level_n in_o church_n or_o state_n i_o grant_v the_o man_n of_o this_o world_n will_v call_v that_o clownishness_n when_o a_o good_a man_n will_v not_o drink_v with_o they_o nor_o comply_v with_o their_o sensuality_n
