make_v this_o a_o sign_n to_o the_o people_n to_o try_v their_o faith_n by_o if_o they_o can_v believe_v at_o all_o time_n that_o god_n will_v bring_v about_o every_o particular_a thing_n for_o they_o which_o their_o eye_n be_v towards_o he_o for_o and_o which_o he_o have_v promise_v without_o hesitation_n waver_v and_o consider_v and_o pore_v upon_o those_o thing_n that_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n as_o a_o trial_n of_o faith_n that_o one_o that_o have_v true_a faith_n will_v not_o be_v daunt_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o great_a peril_n nor_o use_v sinful_a way_n to_o bring_v himself_o out_o of_o trouble_n and_o quote_v for_o this_o the_o heroic_a courage_n of_o the_o three_o child_n before_o nabuchadnezzar_n daniel_n 3._o and_o david_n encourage_v himself_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o ziklag_n be_v take_v and_o the_o people_n speak_v of_o ston_a he_o 1_o sam._n 30.6_o how_o may_v this_o puzzle_v poor_a soul_n and_o make_v they_o reflect_v upon_o themselves_o as_o if_o they_o have_v no_o true_a faith_n because_o it_o may_v be_v they_o have_v find_v many_o fear_n in_o time_n of_o danger_n and_o use_v some_o sinful_a shift_a in_o time_n of_o trouble_n yea_o and_o do_v not_o those_o man_n who_o be_v so_o famous_a in_o their_o genneration_n falter_v much_o in_o their_o faith_n and_o courage_n sometime_o as_o abraham_n when_o he_o twice_o deny_v sarah_n to_o be_v his_o wife_n as_o we_o see_v in_o geneses_n and_o peter_n when_o he_o deny_v christ_n and_o yet_o still_o the_o habit_n of_o faith_n remain_v with_o they_o and_o david_n though_o all_o that_o time_n before_o mention_v he_o be_v bold_a in_o his_o god_n yet_o all_o other_o time_n how_o fearful_a be_v he_o and_o that_o present_o after_o god_n have_v emminent_o appear_v for_o he_o 1_o sam._n 27.1_o and_o then_o he_o be_v sore_o afraid_a of_o achish_a king_n of_o gath_n and_o change_v his_o behaviour_n and_o feign_v himself_o mad_a and_o scrable_v at_o the_o door_n of_o the_o gate_n etc._n etc._n all_o to_o get_v out_o off_o the_o danger_n he_o be_v in_o therefore_o careful_a must_v we_o be_v when_o we_o set_v before_o other_o trial_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o they_o that_o we_o do_v not_o take_v scripture_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o saint_n of_o old_a when_o they_o act_v grace_n high_o and_o urge_v this_o upon_o people_n that_o if_o they_o do_v not_o always_o so_o they_o have_v not_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o they_o indeed_o such_o example_n of_o the_o saint_n shall_v be_v insist_v on_o to_o show_v other_o what_o they_o shall_v do_v in_o like_a case_n but_o not_o to_o make_v they_o trial_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o their_o grace_n so_o as_o that_o they_o shall_v conclude_v they_o have_v not_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n except_o they_o be_v in_o every_o thing_n at_o all_o time_n assist_v and_o influence_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o they_o be_v sometime_o abraham_n david_n and_o peter_n sometime_o act_v above_o themselves_o through_o the_o strong_a help_n of_o assist_a grace_n and_o sometime_o act_v as_o much_o below_o themselves_o through_o the_o power_n of_o temptation_n and_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o they_o and_o so_o it_o be_v with_o other_o saint_n he_o therefore_o that_o will_v not_o lay_v a_o stumble_a block_n before_o the_o weak_a in_o speak_v of_o these_o thing_n must_v careful_o distinguish_v between_o what_o a_o true_a saint_n be_v in_o his_o principle_n desire_n and_o bent_n of_o his_o heart_n in_o which_o he_o be_v holy_a and_o gracious_a for_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o what_o he_o be_v or_o may_v be_v in_o some_o particular_a act_n in_o which_o he_o may_v discover_v many_o fall_n we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o what_o a_o saint_n shall_v be_v and_o will_v be_v and_o what_o he_o be_v and_o attain_v to_o in_o this_o life_n we_o must_v destingnish_v between_o what_o a_o saint_n be_v sometime_o when_o he_o be_v strong_o influence_v and_o assist_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o what_o he_o be_v at_o other_o time_n when_o the_o lord_n leave_v he_o in_o part_n for_o his_o humiliation_n and_o that_o he_o may_v see_v what_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o what_o a_o true_a saint_n be_v in_o his_o main_a course_n so_o he_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o what_o he_o be_v at_o sometime_o when_o as_o paul_n himself_o say_v the_o evil_a which_o he_o will_v not_o do_v and_o that_o which_o he_o hate_v that_o he_o do_v the_o life_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o believer_n be_v a_o great_a mystery_n the_o flesh_n oppose_v the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n the_o flesh_n in_o they_o the_o flesh_n and_o corruption_n in_o they_o can_v precipitate_v they_o to_o evil_a as_o it_o will_v because_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o way_n to_o destruction_n so_o they_o shall_v be_v careful_a at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o they_o do_v not_o quench_v the_o smoke_a flax_n nor_o break_v the_o bruise_a reed_n puzzle_v and_o make_v sad_a any_o righteous_a one_o who_o god_n will_v not_o have_v make_v sad_a remember_v that_o it_o be_v one_o end_n of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v helper_n of_o self_n examination_n if_o happy_o we_o may_v find_v that_o god_n have_v call_v we_o into_o the_o fellowship_n of_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n 2._o in_o try_v our_o spiritual_a estate_n by_o sing_v of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o our_o heart_n it_o be_v best_a or_o dinary_o to_o try_v ourselves_o about_o the_o main_a thing_n wherein_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n do_v principal_o consist_v as_o to_o try_v whether_o we_o have_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n true_a repentance_n true_a love_n to_o god_n and_o the_o like_a or_o else_o through_o our_o weakness_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v confound_v by_o a_o multitude_n of_o sign_n this_o way_n be_v safe_a enough_o for_o where_o there_o be_v only_a grace_n in_o truth_n there_o be_v all_o at_o least_o in_o the_o root_n and_o habit_n 3._o in_o try_v and_o examine_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o our_o heart_n we_o must_v pray_v for_o the_o light_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o show_v we_o those_o grace_n that_o he_o have_v wrought_v in_o we_o otherwise_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o discern_v they_o the_o holy_a ghost_n can_v put_v a_o insture_n and_o shine_v upon_o our_o grace_n and_o when_o the_o conscience_n be_v in_o great_a distress_n can_v say_v be_v not_o afraid_a christ_n be_v here_o see_v thou_o believe_v in_o he_o thou_o fear_v god_n and_o love_v he_o in_o sincerity_n when_o a_o believer_n be_v examine_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o the_o heart_n sometime_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v please_v to_o put_v grace_n into_o fresh_a
act_n whereby_o it_o be_v more_o easy_o discern_v as_o for_o example_n when_o a_o believer_n be_v examine_v whether_o he_o have_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v sometime_o put_v that_o grace_n into_o act_n at_o that_o very_a time_n and_o then_o he_o can_v say_v lord_z i_o believe_v i_o see_v faith_n at_o this_o very_a time_n work_v in_o my_o heart_n and_o so_o for_o other_o grace_n as_o repentance_n love_v to_o god_n and_o the_o like_a when_o it_o be_v thus_o a_o poor_a believer_n go_v through_o the_o work_n of_o self_n examination_n with_o great_a satisfaction_n and_o delight_n and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o always_o so_o yet_o let_v a_o believer_n pray_v and_o search_v into_o his_o heart_n and_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n if_o he_o hide_v his_o face_n yet_o wait_v upon_o he_o for_o a_o good_a hour_n when_o he_o will_v come_v unto_o we_o and_o comfort_v we_o 4._o the_o strong_a the_o habit_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v and_o the_o more_o frequent_a and_o constant_a the_o act_n of_o grace_n be_v the_o more_o easy_o may_v we_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o if_o faith_n be_v strong_a in_o the_o habit_n and_o more_o frequent_a in_o the_o act_n we_o may_v have_v more_o assurance_n that_o we_o have_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o grace_n and_o usual_o it_o be_v so_o that_o such_o have_v most_o assurance_n the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o repentance_n love_v to_o god_n and_o other_o grace_n happy_a be_v it_o when_o a_o man_n can_v true_o say_v shall_v i_o question_v the_o truth_n of_o my_o faith_n in_o christ_n when_o through_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n who_o have_v wrought_v my_o heart_n to_o this_o self_n same_o thing_n i_o find_v a_o strong_a bent_n upon_o my_o heart_n to_o cleave_v to_o christ_n as_o my_o mediator_n for_o ever_o i_o be_o continual_o look_v to_o he_o he_o be_v precious_a to_o i_o the_o meditation_n of_o he_o be_v sweet_a to_o my_o soul_n i_o have_v count_v do_v count_v and_o will_v for_o ever_o count_v all_o thing_n but_o dung_n in_o comparison_n of_o he_o shall_v i_o question_v the_o truth_n of_o my_o repentance_n when_o i_o find_v that_o i_o have_v continual_a sorrow_n in_o my_o heart_n for_o my_o sin_n and_o sigh_n and_o cry_v continual_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o all_o my_o corruption_n i_o say_v happy_a be_v that_o man_n who_o grace_n be_v so_o strong_a and_o in_o such_o continual_a motion_n and_o action_n such_o a_o man_n can_v more_o easy_o discern_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o let_v we_o pray_v and_o wait_v for_o this_o 5._o believer_n must_v not_o be_v take_v up_o whole_o in_o try_v of_o themselves_o whether_o they_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n or_o no_o but_o press_v forward_o in_o put_v forth_o new_a act_n of_o faith_n new_a act_n of_o repentance_n new_a act_n of_o love_n to_o christ_n and_o new_a act_n of_o mortification_n of_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v grow_v up_o into_o he_o in_o all_o grace_n who_o be_v our_o head_n even_o christ_n yea_o sometime_o former_a grace_n receive_v may_v be_v many_o way_n so_o obscure_v yea_o weaken_a that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o recover_v the_o vigour_n and_o comfort_n of_o grace_n but_o for_o the_o soul_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n repent_v and_o turn_v to_o god_n as_o if_o it_o be_v but_o now_o to_o begin_v to_o follow_v christ_n second_o conversion_n and_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o the_o heart_n be_v sometime_o manifest_v to_o we_o by_o the_o more_o immediate_a testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v indeed_o persuade_v and_o assure_v our_o heart_n that_o we_o be_v in_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n than_o we_o be_v effectual_o call_v for_o though_o god_n love_v those_o who_o he_o have_v choose_v from_o everlasting_a and_o the_o give_v of_o christ_n to_o die_v for_o they_o and_o his_o draw_v they_o to_o christ_n be_v from_o that_o free_a love_n and_o good_a pleasure_n of_o his_o will_n towards_o they_o yet_o until_o a_o person_n be_v convert_v the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v not_o assure_v he_o that_o god_n have_v ordain_v he_o to_o eternal_a life_n those_o who_o god_n have_v foreknow_v he_o have_v predestinate_v from_o eternity_n to_o the_o adoption_n of_o child_n by_o jesus_n christ_n but_o till_o they_o be_v actual_o son_n and_o daughter_n which_o be_v not_o till_o their_o conversion_n and_o believe_v in_o christ_n john_n 1.12_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o send_v his_o spirit_n into_o their_o heart_n to_o enable_v they_o to_o cry_v abba_n father_n the_o lord_n indeed_o send_v his_o spirit_n into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o elect_n to_o convert_v they_o and_o work_v faith_n in_o they_o for_o without_o the_o spirit_n it_o can_v never_o be_v do_v but_o it_o be_v a_o after_o work_n for_o the_o spirit_n to_o come_v into_o our_o heart_n enable_v we_o to_o cry_v abba_n father_n assure_v we_o that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n rom._n 8.16_o and_o shed_v abroad_o and_o pour_v in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o we_o in_o particular_a into_o our_o heart_n rom._n 5_o 5._o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n at_o first_o dash_n we_o that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o sometime_o he_o do_v it_o more_o immediate_o that_o when_o the_o believer_n have_v not_o be_v at_o that_o time_n try_v his_o spiritual_a estate_n or_o it_o may_v be_v be_v in_o great_a heaviness_n through_o manifold_a inward_a temptation_n and_o outward_a danger_n and_o affliction_n sudden_o the_o holy_a ghost_n make_v he_o to_o triumph_v in_o christ_n and_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o full_a of_o glory_n indeed_o this_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n witness_v to_o the_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v most_o refresh_a and_o ravish_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o ordinary_a as_o the_o other_o and_o it_o be_v more_o transient_a and_o quick_o pass_v away_o and_o be_v rather_o a_o cordial_a for_o some_o swoon_v fit_a or_o some_o antidote_n to_o strengthen_v the_o heart_n in_o some_o great_a appraoch_a service_n or_o trial_n then_o the_o common_a food_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o this_o life_n if_o any_o shall_v say_v how_o do_v believer_n know_v the_o voice_n and_o witness_v of_o the_o spirit_n speak_v peace_n and_o joy_n by_o jesus_n christ_n to_o their_o soul_n from_o a_o delusion_n i_o answer_v 1._o by_o a_o certain_a spiritual_a instinct_n which_o no_o man_n know_v but_o he_o that_o have_v it_o by_o this_o they_o know_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o spirit_n from_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o stranger_n 2._o by_o the_o sign_n that_o follow_v this_o voice_n and_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n raise_v our_o heart_n to_o look_v to_o christ_n the_o mediator_n as_o he_o from_o who_o all_o our_o spring_n be_v admire_v the_o love_n of_o the_o father_n in_o give_v he_o to_o be_v the_o propitiation_n for_o our_o sin_n loathe_v of_o ourselves_o for_o our_o iniquity_n and_o strong_a desire_n to_o walk_v in_o universal_a obedience_n to_o the_o lord_n but_o now_o because_o some_o seem_v to_o examine_v themselves_o little_a concern_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n upon_o their_o heart_n but_o in_o give_v a_o reason_n of_o the_o hope_n they_o have_v that_o they_o be_v pass_v from_o death_n to_o life_n speak_v not_o of_o their_o faith_n repentance_n and_o other_o grace_n but_o say_v that_o they_o have_v such_o and_o such_o a_o word_n give_v in_o as_o for_o example_n i_o have_v love_v thou_o with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n or_o i_o have_v blot_v out_o as_o a_o
believe_v the_o doctrine_n of_o religion_n so_o as_o that_o he_o make_v no_o question_n of_o the_o truth_n thereof_o he_o do_v well_o and_o he_o ought_v to_o be_v thankful_a for_o this_o common_a light_n and_o help_v of_o the_o spirit_n for_o all_o man_n have_v not_o this_o faith_n of_o assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o christian_a religion_n yea_o at_o some_o special_a season_n of_o temptation_n a_o child_n of_o god_n may_v be_v much_o trouble_v about_o some_o main_a point_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o the_o god_n of_o all_o grace_n will_v after_o they_o have_v see_v their_o own_o weakness_n a_o while_n and_o be_v great_o humble_v establish_v they_o and_o settle_v they_o again_o but_o i_o say_v that_o a_o mere_a assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o religion_n be_v not_o enough_o to_o prove_v a_o man_n to_o be_v convert_v for_o that_o may_v be_v without_o the_o true_a love_n and_o like_n of_o religion_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o believe_v in_o christ_n which_o be_v peculiar_a to_o those_o that_o be_v save_v may_v be_v thus_o describe_v it_o be_v a_o principle_n infuse_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n into_o the_o heart_n whereby_o a_o poor_a sinner_n enlighten_v to_o see_v the_o truth_n of_o christian_a religion_n and_o convince_v of_o his_o lose_a and_o miserable_a estate_n by_o sin_n and_o take_v off_o from_o all_o hope_n and_o confidence_n in_o himself_o do_v trust_v and_o rely_v upon_o jesus_n christ_n our_o great_a high_a priest_n and_o mediator_n to_o be_v pardon_v and_o accept_v and_o be_v make_v a_o heir_n of_o eternal_a life_n through_o he_o the_o nature_n
