shut_v up_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o evasion_n this_o will_v bring_v he_o in_o indeed_o if_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n can_v find_v any_o way_n to_o get_v out_o he_o will_v never_o come_v in_o to_o christ_n but_o when_o he_o shall_v not_o tell_v how_o to_o escape_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n if_o he_o sin_n against_o man_n man_n shall_v judge_v he_o but_o who_o shall_v when_o he_o sin_n against_o god_n if_o he_o consider_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n wrath_n if_o he_o shut_v up_o and_o his_o mouth_n stop_v and_o he_o leave_v inexcusable_a and_o shall_v see_v himself_o a_o miserable_a man_n i_o say_v this_o will_v make_v he_o go_v home_o to_o christ_n and_o that_o be_v the_o use_n you_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o and_o be_v sure_a he_o will_v receive_v you_o particular_a especial_o that_o be_v such_o as_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v considerable_a in_o these_o word_n mark_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o that_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n which_o god_n have_v write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o natural_a man_n second_o that_o this_o truth_n be_v withheld_a by_o they_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d signify_v keep_v it_o in_o prison_n it_o be_v keep_v down_o not_o suffer_v to_o rise_v up_o and_o show_v itself_o in_o practice_n and_o action_n three_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v out_o of_o love_n to_o unrighteousness_n or_o delight_v therein_o that_o be_v of_o unrighteous_a lust_n but_o we_o will_v put_v all_o these_o into_o this_o one_o proposition_n doctr._n it_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o best_a man_n before_o regeneration_n to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n that_o be_v the_o point_n paul_n speak_v not_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o some_o few_o but_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n in_o general_n and_o these_o be_v the_o man_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v chief_o reveal_v these_o be_v the_o man_n that_o of_o all_o other_o think_v themselves_o the_o free_a civil_a man_n that_o carry_v themselves_o sober_o deal_v just_o with_o man_n that_o do_v well_o in_o many_o thing_n that_o indeed_o know_v much_o but_o practise_v not_o according_a to_o knowledge_n these_o i_o say_v be_v the_o man_n against_o who_o the_o wrath_n etc._n etc._n object_n it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v object_v here_o that_o be_v strange_a that_o the_o more_o truth_n be_v reveal_v to_o man_n the_o more_o knowledge_n they_o have_v the_o more_o moral_a virtue_n they_o practise_v the_o worse_a it_o shall_v be_v with_o they_o answ._n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o have_v of_o this_o truth_n the_o bestow_n of_o any_o of_o these_o common_a grace_n put_v no_o man_n into_o a_o better_a condition_n it_o be_v god_n work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o reckon_n only_o indeed_o the_o use_v or_o abuse_v of_o they_o be_v his_o own_o work_n and_o put_v upon_o his_o own_o reckon_n and_o therefore_o in_o regard_n he_o may_v abuse_v they_o they_o may_v do_v he_o hurt_v and_o those_o that_o have_v much_o of_o these_o truth_n but_o use_v they_o not_o or_o that_o if_o they_o do_v use_v some_o of_o they_o yet_o do_v it_o for_o their_o own_o end_n and_o not_o simple_o for_o god_n glory_n be_v as_o abominable_a to_o god_n as_o those_o that_o run_v into_o the_o great_a outrage_n man_n that_o be_v more_o civil_a be_v like_o wolf_n tie_v up_o other_o be_v like_o wolf_n at_o liberty_n it_o be_v true_a other_o man_n do_v more_o mischief_n that_o be_v they_o commit_v more_o sinful_a first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v second_o how_o it_o be_v withheld_a three_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o withhold_a the_o truth_n etc._n etc._n for_o the_o first_o what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o threefold_a kind_n of_o truth_n first_o a_o natural_a truth_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o who_o the_o scripture_n be_v never_o reveal_v second_o a_o common_a truth_n or_o common_a knowledge_n such_o as_o they_o have_v that_o live_v in_o the_o church_n but_o be_v not_o sanctify_v three_o a_o spiritual_a knowledge_n which_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n of_o they_o in_o who_o it_o be_v the_o two_o first_o whereof_o natural_a knowledge_n and_o common_a knowledge_n natural_a man_n may_v have_v now_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v to_o do_v be_v to_o show_v you_o what_o this_o knowledge_n here_o mean_v be_v because_o the_o difference_n be_v not_o very_o apparent_a now_o as_o to_o understand_v what_o a_o accident_n be_v you_o consider_v the_o subject_n the_o author_n and_o efficient_a and_o the_o extent_n thereof_o so_o consider_v you_o these_o three_o thing_n and_o then_o you_o shall_v know_v what_o this_o truth_n be_v truth_n first_o where_o this_o truth_n be_v now_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n place_v in_o the_o speculative_a part_n of_o the_o mind_n or_o understanding_n which_o be_v that_o by_o which_o we_o know_v and_o judge_v aright_o concern_v god_n and_o moral_a virtue_n what_o be_v good_a and_o what_o be_v bad_a what_o be_v just_a and_o what_o be_v unjust_a whereby_o many_o man_n can_v discourse_v learned_o and_o clear_o as_o seneca_n and_o tully_n and_o other_o of_o the_o heathen_a in_o who_o we_o find_v many_o glimmering_n and_o sparkle_n of_o true_a light_n as_o we_o may_v find_v flower_n in_o the_o waste_n though_o the_o proper_a place_n be_v the_o garden_n the_o church_n be_v the_o garden_n of_o god_n as_o in_o canticle_n my_o sister_n my_o spouse_n be_v as_o a_o garden_n enclose_v and_o it_o be_v true_a these_o flower_n proper_o grow_v there_o and_o if_o you_o will_v have_v they_o you_o must_v seek_v they_o in_o the_o scripture_n in_o the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o we_o may_v likewise_o find_v they_o abroad_o second_o this_o truth_n be_v place_v in_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o that_o be_v when_o we_o judge_v of_o good_a thing_n to_o be_v do_v and_o of_o ill_a thing_n not_o to_o be_v do_v and_o that_o as_o have_v reference_n to_o god_n that_o judge_n or_o reward_n and_o this_o be_v it_o divine_v call_v conscience_n and_o it_o differ_v from_o the_o other_o in_o this_o that_o that_o judge_v simple_o whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o bad_a but_o this_o give_v law_n and_o rule_n and_o edict_n of_o life_n it_o
to_o that_o of_o justification_n which_o we_o promise_v to_o handle_v these_o word_n do_v second_o the_o former_a which_o we_o have_v go_v through_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v reveal_v from_o heaven_n etc._n etc._n the_o apostle_n have_v set_v this_o down_o have_v two_o thing_n to_o prove_v first_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o truth_n reveal_v second_o that_o they_o withhold_v it_o in_o unrighteousness_n both_o which_o he_o prove_v in_o the_o sequel_n of_o this_o chapter_n way_n first_o there_o be_v such_o a_o truth_n reveal_v to_o man_n for_o say_v he_o that_o that_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v manifest_a in_o they_o that_o be_v there_o be_v a_o certain_a portion_n of_o truth_n a_o certain_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n which_o god_n have_v made-knowne_a to_o every_o man_n indeed_o there_o be_v different_a measure_n but_o to_o every_o one_o some_o measure_n be_v give_v set_v forth_o by_o the_o author_n thereof_o god_n say_v he_o have_v show_v it_o to_o they_o three_o will_v you_o know_v the_o mean_n how_o it_o be_v reveal_v it_o be_v reveal_v by_o his_o work_n and_o chief_o by_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n object_n but_o you_o will_v object_v his_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n be_v invisible_a shut_v up_o from_o the_o view_n of_o man_n how_o shall_v man_n do_v to_o see_v and_o understand_v these_o thing_n answ._n see_v they_o be_v so_o remote_a say_v he_o they_o be_v know_v by_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v see_v you_o may_v see_v the_o world_n you_o may_v see_v the_o work_n of_o his_o providence_n these_o thing_n run_v into_o the_o sense_n and_o by_o these_o they_o be_v know_v as_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n be_v a_o thing_n in_o itself_o invisible_a but_o yet_o you_o may_v see_v it_o by_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o body_n the_o effect_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n this_o the_o sense_n be_v capable_a of_o so_o the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n be_v know_v by_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v see_v last_o of_o all_o this_o be_v set_v out_o by_o the_o end_n wherefore_o god_n have_v do_v this_o the_o end_n be_v that_o they_o may_v be_v without_o excuse_n and_o so_o far_o he_o prove_v the_o first_o part_n that_o there_o be_v a_o truth_n reveal_v to_o man_n in_o the_o next_o word_n he_o come_v to_o prove_v unrighteousness_n that_o they_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n for_o they_o know_v god_n but_o they_o glorify_v he_o not_o as_o god_n and_o not_o negative_o only_a but_o affirmative_o also_o their_o foolish_a heart_n be_v full_a of_o darkness_n they_o become_v vain_a in_o their_o be_v a_o place_n of_o scripture_n on_o which_o we_o mean_v not_o to_o dwell_v but_o these_o three_o point_n we_o intend_v to_o handle_v out_o of_o these_o two_o verse_n in_o the_o handle_n of_o which_o you_o shall_v see_v all_o these_o particular_n will_v be_v bring_v in_o the_o first_o be_v that_o that_o law_n or_o truth_n or_o knowledge_n by_o which_o every_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v be_v make_v manifest_a by_o god_n himself_o second_o the_o work_n of_o god_n or_o the_o creation_n be_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o he_o have_v make_v it_o know_v three_o they_o be_v so_o much_o make_v know_v to_o every_o man_n as_o will_v make_v he_o inexcusable_a 1._o to_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o i_o say_v that_o truth_n or_o that_o law_n himself_o or_o that_o knowledge_n by_o which_o every_o manifest_a the_o meaning_n be_v every_o man_n have_v a_o measure_n and_o that_o be_v to_o be_v make_v manifest_a as_o light_v when_o it_o come_v into_o a_o room_n it_o show_v all_o the_o glory_n all_o the_o beauty_n and_o deformity_n round_o about_o it_o show_v the_o right_a way_n and_o the_o wrong_a way_n if_o you_o come_v to_o the_o light_n all_o thing_n be_v make_v manifest_a now_o which_o be_v cover_v when_o you_o be_v in_o darkness_n thus_o god_n enlighten_v man_n he_o kindle_v a_o certain_a light_n in_o their_o mind_n for_o so_o the_o word_n signify_v he_o put_v a_o light_n into_o their_o heart_n by_o which_o they_o be_v able_a to_o judge_v of_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o evil_a of_o that_o which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o will_n and_o contrary_a to_o his_o will_n of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o way_n to_o happiness_n and_o that_o which_o be_v not_o and_o this_o be_v make_v know_v the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v mark_v in_o this_o proposition_n know_v be_v to_o show_v how_o it_o be_v make_v know_v you_o see_v that_o the_o thing_n be_v make_v know_v to_o we_o not_o it_o be_v make_v know_v to_o we_o these_o four_o way_n way_n first_o nature_n it_o be_v make_v know_v to_o we_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n god_n have_v write_v the_o law_n in_o their_o heart_n rom._n 2.15_o they_o show_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o law_n which_o law_n be_v write_v in_o their_o be_v how_o it_o shall_v be_v know_v that_o god_n have_v do_v so_o why_o say_v he_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o effect_n every_o man_n even_o heathen_n though_o they_o have_v not_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o scripture_n yeâ—_n they_o have_v the_o law_n write_v in_o their_o heart_n foâ—_n they_o do_v the_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o law_n their_o action_n show_v it_o they_o can_v not_o do_v these_o thing_n if_o they_o have_v not_o the_o law_n write_v in_o their_o heart_n again_o their_o conscience_n accuse_v and_o excuse_v again_o it_o be_v see_v by_o their_o judge_n of_o other_o for_o in_o judge_v of_o other_o they_o judge_v themselves_o and_o make_v it_o evident_a that_o they_o do_v know_v though_o they_o do_v not_o practice_n and_o so_o it_o be_v reveal_v by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n work_n second_o god_n make_v it_o know_v by_o his_o work_n special_o by_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n by_o his_o work_n of_o providence_n which_o be_v ordinary_a and_o extraordinary_a as_o miracle_n that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n look_v on_o the_o great_a volume_n of_o the_o world_n there_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n will_v have_v know_v be_v write_v in_o capital_a letter_n and_o such_o letter_n as_o every_o one_o may_v understand_v and_o read_v so_o as_o that_o which_o the_o papist_n say_v of_o image_n they_o be_v layman_n book_n and_o ignorant_a man_n book_n so_o and_o in_o a_o much_o better_a sense_n this_o book_n of_o the_o world_n be_v the_o heathen_a man_n book_n wherein_o
he_o may_v see_v there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o his_o eternal_a power_n and_o wherein_o all_o man_n may_v see_v what_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v to_o this_o god_n scripture_n three_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o scripture_n joh._n 5.39_o say_v christ_n search_v the_o scripture_n for_o therein_o you_o think_v to_o have_v eternal_a life_n and_o they_o testify_v of_o i_o this_o be_v out_o of_o question_n that_o the_o scripture_n testify_v of_o god_n they_o make_v god_n know_v to_o man_n saint_n last_o it_o be_v make_v know_v by_o the_o saint_n as_o in_o the_o same_o chapter_n joh._n 5._o john_n bare_a witness_n of_o i_o and_o what_o be_v say_v of_o john_n may_v be_v say_v of_o other_o the_o saint_n bear_v witness_n of_o god_n therefore_o in_o the_o second_o to_o the_o philippian_n they_o be_v say_v to_o shine_v as_o light_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v they_o make_v god_n know_v to_o man_n so_o by_o these_o four_o way_n god_n make_v it_o know_v namely_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n second_o by_o his_o work_n three_o by_o the_o scripture_n four_o by_o the_o faithful_a that_o live_v in_o the_o world_n the_o two_o first_o make_v it_o know_v to_o the_o heathen_a the_o two_o last_o to_o they_o within_o the_o church_n that_o be_v the_o faithful_a and_o these_o be_v the_o mean_n by_o which_o it_o be_v evident_a now_o the_o three_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v evident_a be_v that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o make_v this_o truth_n evident_a this_o be_v enough_o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v god_n because_o it_o be_v universal_o do_v go_v to_o all_o nation_n to_o savage_a man_n that_o seem_v to_o be_v most_o remote_a from_o the_o light_n that_o come_v not_o near_o any_o mean_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n yet_o these_o man_n believe_v there_o â—s_a a_o god_n every_o man_n without_o exception_n do_v so_o now_o where_o there_o be_v a_o universal_a effect_n it_o must_v needs_o come_v from_o a_o universal_a cause_n therefore_o from_o god_n himself_o now_o this_o be_v not_o add_v in_o vain_a deduce_v but_o this_o you_o may_v observe_v in_o that_o it_o come_v from_o god_n first_o if_o it_o come_v from_o god_n it_o be_v not_o a_o deceivable_a rule_n it_o be_v not_o a_o fancy_n but_o a_o firm_a truth_n which_o you_o may_v build_v on_o again_o if_o god_n make_v it_o know_v it_o be_v not_o do_v slight_o whatsoever_o god_n do_v if_o he_o make_v it_o purpose_n therefore_o you_o must_v not_o neglect_v it_o in_o observe_v of_o it_o be_v happiness_n and_o in_o break_v of_o it_o you_o shall_v find_v there_o will_v come_v ruin_n and_o destruction_n man_n be_v of_o more_o or_o less_o moment_n according_a to_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o author_n the_o law_n be_v to_o be_v value_v according_a to_o the_o person_n that_o give_v the_o law_n therefore_o man_n law_n be_v of_o some_o moment_n but_o god_n law_n be_v of_o more_o moment_n this_o truth_n be_v most_o press_v in_o scripture_n when_o christ_n preach_v the_o word_n he_o say_v it_o be_v good_a to_o go_v in_o the_o midst_n so_o it_o be_v good_a not_o to_o be_v scrupulous_a and_o yet_o not_o to_o give_v it_o offence_n for_o if_o thou_o do_v withhold_v it_o imprison_v it_o or_o restrain_v it_o thou_o shall_v find_v it_o will_v be_v revenge_v on_o thou_o for_o it_o be_v attend_v with_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n five_o 5._o if_o this_o be_v the_o miserable_a condition_n of_o all_o unregenerate_a man_n rule_v thus_o to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n as_o there_o have_v be_v word_n of_o humiliation_n and_o reproof_n so_o let_v i_o shut_v up_o with_o a_o word_n of_o exhortation_n be_v exhort_v therefore_o from_o hence_o to_o give_v this_o truth_n leave_v to_o rule_v and_o govern_v in_o thy_o heart_n and_o life_n do_v not_o make_v a_o bank_n against_o it_o or_o a_o hedge_n about_o it_o restrain_v it_o not_o fetter_v it_o not_o but_o suffer_v it_o to_o walk_v free_o in_o every_o part_n of_o thy_o conversation_n to_o rectify_v and_o themselves_o they_o see_v there_o be_v dross_n and_o when_o they_o see_v it_o they_o labour_v to_o purge_v it_o by_o repentance_n it_o be_v quite_o contrary_a with_o the_o other_o the_o more_o they_o fall_v into_o sin_n the_o more_o they_o suffocate_v the_o truth_n their_o fall_n into_o sin_n give_v sin_n more_o ground_n it_o make_v they_o more_o in_o love_n with_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o more_o prevalent_a against_o they_o the_o more_o they_o delight_v in_o it_o so_o that_o every_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o sea_n get_v ground_n of_o the_o land_n which_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o recover_v so_o this_o be_v the_o four_o way_n by_o frequent_a quench_v of_o good_a motion_n by_o ill_a company_n and_o fall_v into_o sin_n they_o do_v harden_v their_o heart_n and_o so_o suffocate_v and_o quench_v this_o truth_n 5._o the_o five_o way_n be_v when_o we_o do_v not_o remove_v the_o impediment_n impediment_n which_o if_o they_o be_v take_v away_o the_o truth_n will_v rise_v and_o show_v itself_o for_o that_o be_v it_o that_o keep_v down_o the_o truth_n god_n have_v write_v it_o plain_a enough_o on_o man_n heart_n but_o when_o we_o let_v dust_n and_o soil_n lie_v on_o it_o we_o can_v read_v it_o this_o idleness_n and_o laziness_n suffer_v these_o impediment_n to_o lie_v on_o you_o to_o cover_v the_o truth_n in_o you_o be_v to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n therefore_o seneca_n have_v a_o notion_n in_o this_o case_n though_o he_o be_v a_o heathen_a the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v it_o free_a from_o passion_n and_o distraction_n and_o be_v quiet_a truth_n shall_v be_v see_v clear_o god_n neither_o indeed_o can_v be_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o enemy_n that_o be_v when_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o man_n look_v on_o the_o exactness_n and_o strictness_n of_o holiness_n and_o pureness_n that_o god_n require_v he_o do_v not_o mean_a to_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o and_o see_v he_o will_v not_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o he_o resist_v it_o fight_v against_o it_o as_o a_o enemy_n three_o there_o be_v some_o that_o fail_v in_o neither_o of_o these_o they_o remember_v the_o truth_n well_o enough_o and_o they_o have_v no_o false_a opinion_n concern_v it_o but_o they_o resist_v the_o truth_n as_o stephen_n act._n 7.51_o speak_v of_o some_o that_o resist_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o be_v when_o their_o opinion_n right_a and_o they_o remember_v it_o too_o but_o they_o suppress_v it_o they_o keep_v it_o down_o they_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o come_v forth_o out_o of_o their_o love_n to_o unrighteousness_n to_o some_o lust_n wherein_o they_o be_v resolve_v to_o please_v themselves_o last_o there_o be_v some_o that_o imprison_v the_o truth_n not_o out_o of_o any_o of_o these_o three_o respect_n but_o because_o they_o misapply_v it_o man_n that_o know_v it_o that_o have_v no_o perverse_a heretical_a opinion_n that_o likewise_o do_v not_o resist_v it_o that_o make_v not_o war_n against_o it_o that_o do_v not_o rise_v in_o rebellion_n against_o it_o but_o yet_o when_o they_o come_v to_o the_o point_n out_o of_o false_a distinction_n and_o evasion_n which_o they_o have_v iuvent_v they_o wrest_v the_o rule_n of_o truth_n they_o bend_v it_o too_o much_o to_o their_o own_o particular_a affection_n and_o practice_v though_o they_o know_v the_o truth_n in_o general_a yet_o in_o particular_n they_o seek_v to_o evade_v it_o and_o fail_v in_o apply_v it_o as_o for_o example_n man_n do_v not_o think_v sabbath-breaking_a good_a but_o now_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o the_o action_n i_o do_v at_o such_o a_o time_n be_v sabbath-breaking_a or_o no_o here_o they_o find_v a_o distinction_n to_o put_v it_o off_o so_o vain_a company_n i_o know_v be_v to_o be_v avoid_v but_o whether_o this_o be_v ill_a company_n be_v all_o the_o question_n all_o these_o way_n man_n be_v say_v to_o imprison_v the_o truth_n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o second_o particular_a the_o three_o thing_n we_o propound_v be_v to_o show_v how_o great_a a_o sin_n it_o be_v to_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n unrighteousness_n and_o that_o will_v appear_v from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o which_o bring_v the_o great_a condemnation_n of_o any_o thing_n else_o this_o be_v the_o condemnation_n joh._n 3._o that_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o man_n love_v darkness_n better_a than_o light_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v there_o be_v other_o thing_n for_o which_o god_n will_v punish_v man_n but_o this_o above_o all_o the_o rest_n deserve_v condemnation_n it_o bring_v great_a and_o swift_a condemnation_n that_o light_n be_v come_v truth_n else_o why_o shall_v peter_n say_v it_o have_v be_v better_a they_o have_v never_o know_v the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n they_o shall_v perish_v that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o these_o truth_n and_o of_o the_o degree_n of_o they_o but_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n it_o shall_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n hard_o with_o they_o that_o know_v and_o do_v not_o practice_v they_o as_o jer._n 5.4_o sure_o say_v the_o prophet_n they_o be_v a_o poor_a and_o foolish_a people_n they_o know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o god_n they_o shall_v his_o own_o child_n as_o a_o father_n be_v with_o his_o son_n but_o his_o wrath_n abide_v not_o on_o they_o he_o take_v they_o to_o favour_v again_o but_o they_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n on_o who_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n remain_v and_o consider_v what_o his_o wrath_n be_v the_o violence_n of_o a_o lion_n be_v terrible_a the_o wrath_n of_o a_o king_n be_v great_a but_o who_o know_v to_o show_v that_o the_o sin_n be_v great_a again_o one_o evidence_n more_o be_v in_o this_o very_a chapter_n that_o be_v from_o the_o kind_n of_o punishment_n for_o punishment_n you_o know_v where_o which_o it_o may_v be_v say_v as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n let_v it_o rule_v in_o your_o soul_n that_o where_o by_o man_n shall_v be_v act_v be_v by_o man_n imprison_v holy_a ghost_n it_o be_v put_v in_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o to_o extinguish_v this_o truth_n not_o to_o suffer_v it_o to_o live_v not_o to_o nourish_v it_o not_o to_o bring_v it_o forth_o be_v the_o great_a sin_n of_o all_o even_o the_o heathen_a shall_v rise_v in_o judgement_n against_o christian_n for_o this_o who_o maintain_v the_o vestal_a fire_n because_o they_o conceive_v it_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o we_o look_v to_o our_o eye_n the_o guide_n of_o the_o body_n so_o we_o shall_v learn_v to_o watch_v and_o be_v tender_a over_o this_o truth_n as_o over_o our_o eye_n for_o the_o one_o be_v the_o light_n but_o of_o this_o life_n the_o other_o be_v the_o light_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o eternal_a life_n in_o micah_n 3.5_o it_o be_v threaten_v as_o a_o great_a judgement_n when_o god_n shall_v turn_v their_o vision_n into_o night_n and_o their_o divination_n into_o darkness_n when_o the_o sun_n shall_v go_v down_o on_o their_o prophet_n and_o the_o day_n shall_v be_v dark_a on_o they_o and_o will_v you_o bring_v this_o judgement_n on_o yourselves_o they_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o that_o have_v not_o use_v this_o truth_n but_o imprison_v it_o and_o labour_v you_o will_v little_o think_v you_o be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n but_o when_o this_o truth_n come_v as_o a_o prophet_n from_o god_n and_o tell_v you_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n ought_v to_o do_v thou_o no_o good_a take_v heed_n thou_o do_v not_o neglect_v it_o do_v not_o abuse_v it_o take_v not_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a but_o see_v thou_o use_v this_o light_n when_o the_o great_a promise_n of_o christ_n his_o come_n be_v make_v what_o be_v it_o but_o this_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v a_o new_a light_n that_o the_o people_n that_o sit_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o peace_n again_o 3_o three_o to_o join_v that_o with_o it_o as_o you_o must_v be_v thankful_a truth_n so_o in_o the_o three_o place_n you_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o do_v any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o this_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n to_o neglect_v it_o there_o be_v not_o a_o spark_n of_o it_o not_o a_o beam_n of_o this_o light_n which_o be_v convey_v to_o you_o by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o shall_v be_v in_o vain_a though_o you_o do_v not_o prize_v it_o it_o shall_v set_v you_o a_o step_n near_a heaven_n or_o hell_n even_o every_o spark_n and_o beam_n of_o this_o and_o this_o be_v it_o which_o may_v make_v man_n afraid_a and_o look_v about_o they_o see_v that_o when_o this_o light_n be_v make_v know_v it_o be_v so_o dangerous_a to_o neglect_v it_o therefore_o think_v this_o when_o god_n have_v send_v a_o right_a ministry_n consider_v who_o have_v send_v this_o light_n god_n have_v do_v it_o and_o will_v god_n send_v a_o vain_a light_n have_v do_v you_o no_o good_a that_o you_o have_v live_v long_o under_o this_o light_n but_o have_v attain_v no_o good_a you_o have_v know_v much_o but_o practise_v little_a then_o know_v this_o shall_v exceed_o increase_v your_o condemnation_n paul_n say_v we_o thank_v god_n that_o he_o have_v cause_v we_o to_o triumph_v in_o jesus_n christ_n in_o make_v manifest_a the_o savour_n of_o sin_n so_o in_o many_o other_o thing_n in_o case_n of_o election_n or_o in_o do_v of_o business_n this_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v choose_v and_o business_n ought_v to_o be_v carry_v thus_o but_o yet_o out_o of_o some_o by-respect_n a_o man_n will_v have_v it_o carry_v otherwise_o this_o be_v commit_v of_o a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o envy_n this_o man_n preferment_n may_v be_v profitable_a but_o because_o his_o eminency_n may_v be_v hurtful_a to_o i_o i_o can_v affect_v he_o this_o be_v a_o know_a sin_n so_o in_o case_n of_o the_o sacrament_n do_v you_o not_o know_v you_o ought_v to_o receive_v often_o and_o not_o to_o neglect_v it_o in_o the_o congregation_n where_o you_o be_v be_v you_o not_o bind_v to_o that_o you_o think_v it_o a_o sin_n not_o to_o hear_v the_o desire_v god_n to_o try_v he_o another_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o search_v because_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lie_v in_o some_o sin_n or_o because_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o conscience_n trouble_v with_o it_o this_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o false_a heart_n though_o they_o do_v not_o know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o sin_n yet_o it_o have_v the_o shadow_n of_o a_o sin_n and_o they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o examine_v it_o to_o the_o full_a it_o show_v it_o be_v no_o less_o 2._o second_o the_o second_o case_n wherein_o a_o man_n withhold_v this_o knowledge_n knowledge_n and_o detain_v this_o truth_n which_o god_n have_v make_v manifest_a be_v when_o he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o enlarge_v it_o a_o man_n that_o have_v already_o some_o knowledge_n as_o every_o man_n have_v some_o and_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o add_v to_o this_o knowledge_n to_o increase_v it_o that_o man_n proper_o withhold_v the_o truth_n in_o unrighteousness_n for_o he_o that_o withhold_v fuel_n put_v out_o the_o fire_n as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o cast_v water_n on_o it_o and_o he_o that_o take_v away_o food_n from_o a_o live_a creature_n kill_v it_o as_o well_o as_o he_o that_o take_v away_o its_o life_n with_o violence_n so_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o feed_v this_o with_o fuel_n with_o that_o which_o may_v make_v it_o grow_v and_o increase_v if_o thou_o do_v not_o labour_v to_o enlarge_v it_o thou_o do_v extinguish_v it_o those_o and_o of_o these_o man_n there_o be_v two_o sort_n first_o such_o as_o do_v not_o care_n for_o any_o knowledge_n at_o all_o or_o if_o they_o do_v come_v to_o hear_v yet_o they_o recall_v it_o not_o meditate_v not_o upon_o it_o and_o so_o as_o good_a never_o a_o whit_n as_o never_o the_o better_a some_o thing_n they_o must_v do_v for_o fashion_n sake_n but_o if_o they_o do_v hear_v they_o do_v it_o in_o a_o negligent_a manner_n they_o be_v ever_o learning_n and_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n these_o be_v the_o first_o sort_n of_o man_n but_o there_o be_v a_o second_o sort_n and_o that_o be_v those_o which_o have_v know_v much_o have_v hear_v much_o have_v go_v very_o far_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o truth_n yet_o will_v not_o go_v to_o the_o uttermost_a i_o may_v resemble_v they_o by_o felix_n he_o go_v not_o far_o but_o i_o use_v it_o as_o a_o resemblance_n when_o paul_n preach_v and_o begin_v to_o know_v some_o measure_n of_o this_o truth_n when_o some_o of_o these_o spark_n begin_v to_o be_v revive_v and_o stir_v up_o in_o he_o he_o bid_v he_o go_v away_o and_o say_v he_o will_v call_v for_o he_o another_o time_n but_o he_o be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o his_o word_n so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v loath_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o that_o strictness_n and_o exactness_n that_o be_v require_v as_o our_o duty_n when_o he_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o be_v straight_o lace_v that_o live_v at_o liberty_n and_o think_v he_o will_v do_v it_o before_o he_o die_v but_o put_v it_o off_o this_o man_n
