priest_n yet_o he_o will_v bring_v shame_n upon_o thy_o head_n use_v 2_o this_o show_v the_o madness_n of_o those_o man_n and_o woman_n describe_v folly_n of_o worldling_n describe_v who_o desire_v to_o enjoy_v their_o honour_n riches_n and_o dignity_n profit_n and_o preferrement_n they_o take_v a_o most_o preposterous_a and_o very_o wrong_a course_n for_o how_o do_v man_n seek_v for_o preferment_n honour_n and_o promotion_n land_n and_o live_n namely_o by_o oppression_n bribery_n usury_n extortion_n &_o the_o like_a now_o alas_o we_o see_v that_o be_v a_o vain_a course_n &_o the_o next_o way_n to_o strip_v a_o man_n naked_a of_o all_o these_o thing_n and_o to_o bring_v he_o to_o shame_n and_o reproach_n misery_n and_o poverty_n for_o sin_n bring_v all_o these_o thing_n upon_o they_o but_o if_o you_o will_v come_v to_o honour_n and_o dignity_n riches_n preferment_n then_o seek_v to_o keep_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n serve_v he_o worship_v he_o honour_v he_o and_o he_o will_v honour_v they_o that_o do_v so_o and_o if_o thou_o seek_v these_o thing_n by_o wicked_a and_o unlawful_a mean_n certain_o the_o lord_n will_v cast_v dung_n in_o thy_o face_n second_o when_o david_n pray_v that_o god_n will_v not_o take_v his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o he_o mean_v not_o the_o essence_n of_o the_o three_o person_n but_o his_o gift_n and_o grace_n the_o virtue_n of_o god_n spirit_n sanctify_v his_o heart_n and_o renew_v of_o he_o so_o than_o we_o understand_v these_o word_n we_o must_v consider_v this_o objection_n quest_n whether_o that_o the_o gift_n &_o grace_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n wrought_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o god_n child_n can_v be_v total_o and_o final_o lose_v as_o david_n word_n seem_v to_o imply_v double_a grace_n of_o god_n double_a for_o the_o clear_a answer_n of_o this_o question_n we_o must_v know_v that_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v first_o temporary_a for_o this_o life_n or_o else_o spiritual_a for_o the_o life_n to_o come_v now_o of_o the_o former_a there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o the_o temporary_a gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v lose_v utter_o again_o the_o spiritual_a gift_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n some_o common_a to_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_a some_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a to_o god_n elect_n and_o choose_a child_n now_o concern_v the_o common_a gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n which_o be_v common_a to_o the_o wicked_a aswell_o as_o the_o godly_a to_o hear_v the_o word_n to_o preach_v the_o word_n and_o to_o do_v such_o like_a thing_n they_o may_v be_v lose_v three_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v such_o as_o either_o be_v essential_a to_o faith_n and_o without_o which_o faith_n can_v be_v or_o else_o the_o effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v not_o of_o the_o essence_n of_o faith_n such_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o be_v not_o of_o the_o essence_n of_o faith_n nor_o absolute_a necessary_a to_o eternal_a life_n the_o lord_n do_v sometime_o take_v away_o for_o a_o time_n as_o namely_o the_o purity_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n that_o that_o inward_a peace_n which_o do_v company_n it_o the_o sense_n &_o feeling_n of_o god_n love_n in_o christ_n and_o his_o especial_a favour_n cheerfulness_n of_o spirit_n in_o prayer_n hear_v and_o such_o holy_a duty_n joy_n in_o the_o holy-ghost_n patience_n the_o gift_n of_o prayer_n and_o such_o like_a because_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o the_o faithful_a may_v stand_v without_o these_o for_o a_o time_n but_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o god_n sanctify_a spirit_n as_o faith_n in_o god_n promise_n hope_v of_o eternal_a life_n affiance_n in_o god_n mercy_n in_o jesus_n christ_n love_n of_o g_o odd_a his_o word_n and_o child_n these_o grace_n can_v never_o be_v lose_v whole_o true_a it_o be_v they_o may_v be_v weaken_v and_o lessen_v and_o sometimes_o seem_v to_o be_v lose_v for_o the_o time_n but_o yet_o certain_a it_o be_v they_o can_v not_o be_v whole_o and_o final_o lose_v they_o may_v be_v as_o the_o sun_n under_o a_o cloud_n and_o as_o fire_v rake_v up_o in_o the_o ash_n or_o as_o the_o tree_n in_o winter_n but_o they_o can_v not_o be_v extinguish_v lose_v and_o take_v clean_o away_o but_o as_o the_o sun_n shine_v clear_a the_o cloud_n be_v scatter_v and_o the_o fire_n give_v light_a and_o heat_n be_v stir_v so_o faith_n hope_n affiance_n joy_n comfort_n peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o feel_v of_o god_n love_n be_v renew_a and_o show_v themselves_o clear_a again_o use_v 1_o see_v that_o the_o save_a grace_n of_o god_n holy_a and_o sanctify_a spirit_n can_v total_o and_o final_o be_v lose_v lose_v comfort_n to_o the_o godly_a that_o grace_n can_v not_o be_v lose_v this_o be_v matter_n of_o endless_a comfort_n to_o every_o true_a child_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o temptation_n and_o grievous_a trial_n for_o if_o ever_o thou_o find_v and_o felt_a in_o thy_o hart_n true_a faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n sound_a repentance_n hope_v of_o eternal_a life_n love_n of_o god_n howsoever_o these_o may_v be_v much_o weaken_v and_o for_o a_o time_n in_o thy_o sense_n and_o feeling_n seem_v be_v lose_v yet_o they_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o yea_o if_o thou_o do_v careful_o attend_v the_o mean_n as_o namely_o the_o sincere_a preach_n of_o the_o word_n administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n continual_a humble_a and_o earnest_a prayer_n the_o lord_n will_v revive_v they_o and_o renew_v they_o again_o use_v 2_o this_o must_v serve_v to_o direct_v we_o how_o to_o judge_v of_o they_o who_o fall_v sometime_o into_o pang_n of_o despair_n utter_v word_n of_o desperation_n that_o they_o be_v damn_v person_n and_o reprobate_n and_o cry_v out_o of_o themselves_o true_o if_o ever_o we_o see_v in_o they_o the_o sound_a work_n of_o grace_n and_o true_a repentance_n delight_n in_o the_o word_n care_v to_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n love_n to_o god_n child_n etc._n etc._n we_o be_v in_o charity_n to_o hope_v the_o best_a of_o they_o to_o think_v that_o they_o belong_v to_o god_n and_o that_o they_o speak_v they_o know_v not_o what_o of_o themselves_o for_o they_o speak_v according_a to_o their_o present_a sense_n and_o feeling_n whenas_o indeed_o in_o time_n of_o temptation_n &_o trouble_n of_o mind_n they_o be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o a_o ague_n he_o can_v relish_v no_o meat_n every_o thing_n seem_v bitter_a unto_o he_o because_o his_o mouth_n be_v out_o of_o temper_n but_o when_o he_o come_v to_o health_n he_o judge_v otherwise_o even_o so_o these_o poor_a distress_a soul_n in_o their_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n they_o speak_v they_o know_v not_o what_o not_o as_o their_o estate_n be_v in_o truth_n but_o as_o they_o think_v it_o to_o be_v according_a to_o their_o present_a sense_n and_o feeling_n use_v 3_o hence_o we_o see_v what_o to_o answer_v to_o that_o objection_n that_o many_o man_n who_o have_v make_v a_o fair_a profession_n of_o the_o truth_n have_v excellent_a gift_n and_o yet_o have_v fall_v clean_o away_o so_o hebr._n 6._o a_o man_n may_v be_v enlighten_v taste_v of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n taste_v of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v such_o man_n notwithstanding_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o that_o final_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o speak_v there_o of_o the_o true_a work_n of_o grace_n and_o sanctification_n of_o save_v faith_n sound_a repentance_n hearty_a to_o betray_v his_o master_n but_o how_o he_o digest_v the_o same_o in_o the_o end_n 26.27_o mat._n 26.27_o the_o evangelist_n declare_v when_o he_o see_v that_o christ_n be_v condemn_v he_o bring_v labourer_n into_o his_o harvest_n 9_o math._n 9_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n show_v the_o fruit_n of_o this_o duty_n verse_n part_v of_o the_o verse_n that_o david_n will_v perform_v namely_o that_o hereby_o by_o his_o doctrine_n and_o by_o his_o example_n many_o a_o poor_a sinner_n shall_v be_v convert_v unto_o god_n doctr._fw-la 1_o in_o that_o david_n here_o promise_v to_o himself_o this_o use_n and_o fruit_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v by_o his_o preach_a and_o example_n work_n conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v god_n work_n a_o mean_n to_o bring_v other_o to_o god_n hence_o we_o may_v learn_v a_o gracious_a comfort_n for_o all_o godly_a minister_n of_o the_o word_n who_o labour_n both_o by_o life_n and_o doctrine_n to_o win_v other_o that_o if_o they_o shall_v be_v painful_a in_o teach_v and_o careful_a to_o live_v a_o godly_a life_n they_o shall_v certain_o find_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o labour_n to_o the_o convert_n of_o sinner_n and_o save_v of_o soul_n if_o i_o have_v send_v these_o prophet_n and_o if_o they_o have_v stand_v in_o my_o counsel_n and_o declare_v my_o way_n unto_o my_o people_n 23.22_o jer._n 23.22_o than_o they_o shall_v have_v turn_v they_o from_o their_o evil_a way_n and_o from_o the_o wickedness_n of_o their_o invention_n where_o the_o lord_n show_v that_o all_o such_o as_o be_v the_o true_a prophet_n of_o god_n stand_v in_o his_o steed_n teach_v his_o way_n they_o shall_v see_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o their_o labour_n and_o the_o cause_n why_o man_n convert_v not_o soul_n be_v because_o they_o be_v never_o send_v of_o god_n and_o do_v not_o teach_v god_n way_n and_o stand_v not_o in_o his_o steed_n or_o else_o because_o though_o they_o teach_v the_o truth_n yet_o their_o life_n be_v vile_a and_o wicked_a they_o pluck_v down_o with_o one_o hand_n that_o they_o build_v with_o the_o other_o and_o destroy_v that_o in_o life_n which_o they_o teach_v in_o doctrine_n use_v 1_o hence_o mark_v the_o reason_n why_o so_o many_o great_a and_o learned_a man_n of_o excellent_a gift_n wit_n and_o learning_n do_v not_o convert_v many_o soul_n unto_o god_n because_o they_o either_o teach_v not_o god_n way_n but_o their_o own_o way_n their_o wit_n eloquence_n and_o device_n or_o else_o though_o they_o teach_v well_o yet_o they_o live_v ill_a and_o so_o cause_v their_o doctrine_n to_o be_v less_o regard_v and_o weaken_v the_o power_n of_o it_o by_o their_o sinful_a life_n and_o it_o please_v god_n in_o his_o great_a mercy_n to_o use_v the_o labour_n of_o his_o poor_a servant_n who_o dare_v not_o speak_v their_o own_o word_n nor_o seek_v themselves_o but_o god_n word_n in_o plain_a evidence_n and_o simplicity_n and_o live_v according_a to_o their_o teach_n the_o lord_n do_v bless_v their_o labour_n for_o the_o conversion_n of_o sinner_n and_o save_v of_o poor_a soul_n use_v 2_o it_o may_v admonish_v all_o those_o who_o either_o teach_v their_o own_o way_n by_o paint_a cloquence_n toy_n or_o tale_n or_o else_o though_o they_o teach_v the_o truth_n that_o they_o join_v with_o it_o a_o godly_a life_n else_o they_o may_v teach_v long_o enough_o ere_o they_o do_v any_o good_a and_o if_o they_o will_v convert_v sinner_n let_v they_o first_o be_v convert_v when_o thou_o be_v convert_v strengthen_v thy_o brethren_n 22._o luke_n 22._o and_o let_v no_o such_o careless_a minister_n wonder_v that_o god_n give_v no_o blessing_n to_o their_o labour_n see_v they_o fail_v either_o in_o teach_v god_n way_n true_o and_o plain_o or_o else_o in_o life_n they_o live_v wicked_o and_o offensive_a verse_n 14._o 14_o deliver_v i_o from_o blood_n o_o god_n the_o god_n of_o my_o salvation_n and_o my_o tongue_n shall_v sing_v joyful_o of_o thy_o righteousness_n sin_n david_n can_v satisfy_v himself_o in_o seek_v mercy_n for_o his_o sin_n in_o this_o verse_n yet_o once_o again_o david_n return_v to_o entreat_v for_o mercy_n and_o favour_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v pardon_v his_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n yea_o his_o bloody_a sin_n and_o that_o god_n will_v in_o mercy_n deliver_v he_o from_o that_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o he_o for_o the_o same_o for_o he_o entreat_v the_o lord_n to_o deliver_v he_o from_o blood_n that_o be_v his_o heinous_a and_o capital_a sin_n of_o murder_n and_o shed_v that_o innocent_a blood_n of_o urias_n his_o faithful_a servant_n 11._o 2._o sam._n 11._o and_o many_o other_o with_o he_o so_o also_o the_o punishment_n due_a unto_o it_o verse_n part_n of_o the_o verse_n this_o verse_n contain_v two_o part_n first_o a_o request_n with_o great_a earnestness_n to_o god_n for_o deliverance_n from_o his_o grievous_a sin_n deliver_v i_o from_o blood_n second_o a_o reason_n to_o move_v the_o lord_n thereunto_o namely_o take_v from_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n which_o he_o will_v show_v forth_o and_o my_o tongue_n shall_v sing_v joyful_o of_o thy_o rightenesse_n in_o the_o petition_n first_o mark_v his_o god_n and_o the_o god_n of_o his_o salvation_n deliver_v i_o from_o blood_n that_o be_v from_o the_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a unto_o
mercy_n for_o as_o thankfulness_n for_o a_o old_a be_v the_o begin_n of_o a_o new_a so_o unthankfulness_n for_o a_o old_a favour_n be_v the_o next_o way_n to_o deprive_v we_o of_o a_o new_a verse_n 16._o 16_o for_o thou_o desire_v no_o sacrifice_n else_o will_v i_o give_v it_o thou_o etc._n etc._n david_n have_v profess_v that_o it_o be_v his_o earnest_a desire_n to_o honour_n god_n to_o praise_v he_o and_o seek_v his_o glory_n confess_v that_o he_o have_v no_o other_o mean_n but_o to_o speak_v of_o his_o mercy_n and_o to_o be_v willing_a to_o set_v forth_o the_o same_o to_o become_v a_o preacher_n of_o his_o righteousness_n and_o goodness_n and_o he_o confess_v to_o his_o comfort_n that_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o delight_v with_o this_o then_o with_o all_o those_o external_a ceremony_n and_o sacrifice_n which_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n do_v offer_v &_o think_v by_o they_o to_o please_v god_n and_o to_o appease_v his_o anger_n and_o to_o procure_v pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n thereby_o so_o that_o the_o main_a scope_n of_o these_o two_o verse_n be_v this_o to_o show_v that_o david_n though_o he_o have_v nothing_o in_o the_o world_n to_o requite_v the_o lord_n mercy_n unto_o he_o yet_o he_o persuade_v himself_o upon_o his_o true_a repentance_n the_o lord_n will_v accept_v of_o his_o earnest_a desire_n to_o honour_v he_o and_o to_o set_v forth_o his_o praise_n in_o this_o 16._o verse_n he_o show_v what_o be_v those_o sacrifice_n which_o the_o lord_n care_v not_o for_o and_o desire_v not_o outward_a sacrifice_n alone_o which_o man_n offer_v without_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o whereby_o they_o think_v to_o appease_v his_o anger_n and_o merit_v pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n by_o the_o same_o in_o the_o 17._o verse_n he_o show_v what_o receive_v now_o of_o these_o david_n speak_v especial_o here_o and_o of_o sacrifice_n for_o thanksgiving_n there_o be_v twosort_n some_o be_v call_v sacrifice_n as_o the_o first_o word_n signify_v where_o some_o beast_n be_v slay_v and_o offer_v in_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n again_o some_o be_v call_v burnt-offering_n which_o be_v all_o consume_v and_o turn_v into_o ash_n and_o they_o be_v call_v so_o because_o the_o smoke_n of_o they_o ascend_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o both_o of_o they_o be_v figure_n of_o christ_n jesus_n who_o shall_v be_v slay_v and_o burn_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o fire_n of_o god_n anger_n for_o our_o sin_n quest_n but_o how_o can_v the_o lord_n be_v say_v not_o to_o desire_v burn_v offering_n and_o sacrifice_n see_v he_o command_v they_o in_o his_o law_n res._n we_o may_v not_o think_v the_o prophet_n speak_v here_o simple_o that_o the_o lord_n care_v not_o for_o sacrifice_n for_o as_o yet_o the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n be_v in_o force_n and_o the_o great_a part_n of_o god_n worship_n stand_v in_o sacrifice_n and_o david_n himself_o and_o solomon_n be_v diligent_a and_o not_o spare_v in_o perform_v this_o duty_n but_o we_o must_v know_v david_n speak_v here_o first_o that_o the_o lord_n care_v not_o for_o sacrifice_n as_o they_o be_v do_v of_o the_o common_a people_n of_o the_o jew_n because_o that_o whereas_o the_o lord_n do_v ordain_v they_o as_o help_v to_o lead_v they_o to_o christ_n that_o they_o may_v deny_v themselves_o and_o see_v they_o be_v worthy_a to_o die_v when_o the_o beast_n be_v slay_v so_o they_o may_v seek_v to_o be_v save_v by_o the_o everlasting_a sacrifice_n of_o christ_n alone_o but_o they_o begin_v to_o imagine_v that_o by_o their_o very_a offering_n of_o beast_n in_o sacrifice_n god_n be_v please_v never_o look_v to_o christ_n jesus_n whereof_o they_o be_v but_o type_n and_o figure_n second_o because_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n do_v offer_v they_o without_o faith_n and_o repentance_n with_o impenitent_a heart_n 7._o jer._n 7._o and_o think_v so_o long_o as_o they_o offer_v sacrifice_n though_o they_o live_v in_o sin_n it_o skill_a not_o three_o the_o lord_n delight_v not_o nor_o be_v not_o so_o well_o please_v with_o this_o outward_a sacrifice_n as_o with_o a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n when_o that_o be_v humble_v and_o mourn_v for_o sin_n believe_v in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o be_v careful_a to_o honour_n god_n by_o a_o holy_a life_n doctr._fw-la 1_o seeing_n david_n affirm_v that_o god_n care_v not_o for_o the_o outward_a sacrifice_n when_o the_o inward_a be_v want_v 29.13_o a_o man_n person_n must_v first_o be_v approve_v before_o his_o sacrifice_n be_v accept_v jer._n 24.20_o esa_n 29.13_o we_o learn_v that_o though_o a_o man_n shall_v 15._o mat._n 15._o a_o repentant_a heart_n a_o sanctify_a heart_n all_o be_v but_o vain_a the_o scribe_n and_o pharisesseem_v marvellous_a precise_a in_o outward_a show_n very_o zealous_a and_o forward_a yet_o their_o heart_n be_v puff_v up_o with_o pride_n self-love_n malice_n covetousness_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o christ_n say_v 15._o math._n 15._o unless_o your_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharise_n you_o can_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n judas_n in_o outward_a show_n preach_v and_o pray_v as_o well_o as_o other_o sacrifice_n as_o if_o they_o shall_v kill_v a_o man_n or_o sacrifice_v a_o dog_n 65.3_o esay_n 65.3_o that_o be_v abomination_n to_o the_o lord_n use_v 1_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o cut_v the_o comb_n not_o the_o lord_n even_o now_o abhor_v our_o sacrifice_n our_o come_n to_o church_n heat_n pray_v etc._n etc._n see_v man_n do_v content_a themselves_o with_o outward_a action_n and_o come_v with_o
