of_o mouth_n after_o a_o sort_n compel_v i_o to_o write_v it_o the_o sum_n and_o effect_n of_o all_o i_o have_v set_v down_o not_o in_o the_o same_o word_n i_o speak_v for_o the_o lord_n know_v i_o mighty_a &_o inward_a work_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n &_o many_o other_o thing_n which_o the_o lord_n work_v most_o merciful_o by_o the_o preach_v of_o his_o glorious_a gospel_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v hope_v for_o by_o read_v the_o write_a sermon_n of_o his_o minister_n nevertheless_o i_o trust_v that_o he_o will_v bless_v the_o read_n hereof_o to_o the_o praise_n of_o his_o own_o name_n particular_o describe_v unto_o his_o auditory_a false_a and_o dissemble_a prophet_n by_o their_o fruit_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v better_o know_v they_o 27._o yet_o in_o this_o 21._o verse_n he_o ascend_v from_o that_o particular_a to_o a_o general_a description_n of_o all_o false_a &_o feign_a professor_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o calling_n and_o function_n soever_o they_o be_v of_o in_o the_o church_n or_o common_a wealth_n as_o appear_v most_o plain_o both_o by_o the_o similitude_n general_o use_v in_o the_o 17.18_o &_o 19_o verse_n go_v before_o and_o also_o by_o these_o word_n not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v unto_o
i_o lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n nevertheless_o the_o principal_a meaning_n and_o drift_n of_o christ_n be_v to_o terrify_v the_o false_a prophet_n and_o their_o doctrine_n verse_n this_o dreadful_a declaration_n of_o the_o just_a condemnation_n of_o all_o hypocrite_n &_o feign_a professor_n of_o the_o true_a gospel_n contain_v two_o general_a &_o principal_a part_n the_o first_o be_v a_o division_n of_o all_o such_o as_o profess_v the_o truth_n into_o two_o sort_n full_o and_o plain_o express_v in_o the_o 21._o verse_n the_o second_o be_v a_o meeting_n with_o a_o objection_n contain_v both_o a_o kind_n of_o defence_n whereby_o the_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n and_o worker_n of_o miracle_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o great_a knowledge_n and_o rare_a gift_n may_v seem_v as_o to_o clear_v and_o defend_v themselves_o so_o to_o avoid_v and_o escape_v the_o just_a sentence_n of_o eternal_a curse_n and_o malediction_n set_v down_o in_o the_o 22._o verse_n many_o shall_v say_v unto_o i_o in_o that_o day_n lord_n lord_n etc_n etc_n and_o also_o a_o most_o wise_a and_o perfect_a though_o very_o fearful_a answer_v of_o christ_n there_o unto_o in_o the_o 23._o verse_n and_o then_o will_v i_o confess_v to_o they_o etc_n etc_n wherein_o notwithstanding_o these_o glorious_a work_n allege_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n for_o their_o defence_n he_o show_v that_o because_o he_o never_o acknowledge_v they_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o because_o in_o do_v such_o work_n they_o bring_v forth_o iniquity_n therefore_o he_o must_v necessary_o forbid_v they_o his_o presence_n wherein_o only_o be_v all_o joy_n and_o felicity_n as_o contrary_o to_o be_v seclude_v from_o his_o presence_n be_v all_o sorrow_n and_o extreme_a misery_n thus_o we_o see_v both_o the_o sum_n and_o true_a meaning_n and_o also_o the_o plain_a and_o natural_a disposition_n of_o this_o part_n of_o christ_n sermon_n contain_v in_o these_o three_o verse_n whereof_o i_o purpose_v to_o speak_v particular_o not_o in_o the_o excellency_n of_o word_n or_o in_o the_o entice_a speech_n of_o man_n wisdom_n but_o in_o plain_a evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o truth_n religion_n not_o every_o one_o etc_n etc_n here_o our_o saviour_n christ_n divide_v all_o the_o worshipper_n of_o god_n and_o the_o professor_n of_o his_o gospel_n into_o two_o sort_n for_o the_o first_o sentence_n of_o this_o verse_n be_v equivalent_a or_o all_o one_o in_o sense_n with_o this_o particular_a say_n some_o man_n say_v unto_o christ_n lord_n lord_n shall_v not_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n wherein_o as_o he_o note_v the_o first_o sort_n of_o professor_n so_o he_o describe_v they_o by_o their_o external_a confess_v of_o christ_n to_o be_v their_o lord_n and_o master_n and_o also_o by_o their_o end_n the_o second_o sort_n he_o note_v in_o the_o latter_a and_o also_o describe_v they_o by_o their_o fruit_n &_o end_n in_o these_o word_n but_o he_o that_o do_v my_o father_n will_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n which_o end_n although_o it_o be_v not_o express_v yet_o it_o be_v necessary_o to_o be_v supply_v out_o of_o the_o former_a part_n therefore_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n be_v this_o of_o the_o external_a professor_n of_o christ_n some_o do_v only_o profess_v in_o outward_a show_n and_o some_o other_o do_v both_o outward_o profess_v and_o also_o do_v the_o father_n will_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n so_o that_o the_o author_n of_o this_o division_n be_v our_o saviour_n himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v in_o no_o wise_a to_o be_v doubt_v of_o yet_o because_o the_o common_a and_o usual_a conversation_n of_o christian_n be_v so_o corrupt_a that_o it_o evident_o declare_v they_o to_o be_v content_v and_o satisfy_v with_o a_o outward_a serve_v of_o god_n void_a of_o inward_a sincerity_n and_o true_a belief_n it_o shall_v be_v requisite_a and_o needful_a in_o few_o word_n to_o show_v out_o of_o the_o word_n the_o certain_a truth_n of_o these_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n in_o the_o first_o age_n of_o the_o world_n when_o there_o be_v but_o four_o person_n which_o serve_v the_o true_a god_n the_o creator_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n the_o holy_a ghost_n teach_v that_o habel_n and_o cain_n albeit_o they_o both_o do_v external_o profess_v their_o religion_n by_o offer_v of_o the_o first_o fruit_n of_o sheep_n and_o of_o the_o ground_n yet_o cain_n his_o profession_n be_v only_o in_o outward_a show_n because_o his_o outward_a sacrifice_n 4.5_o be_v void_a of_o faith_n be_v not_o regard_v of_o god_n but_o habels_n profession_n be_v both_o in_o outward_a show_n and_o also_o in_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n commend_v he_o testify_v that_o by_o faith_n he_o offer_v a_o sacrifice_n of_o great_a price_n than_o cain_n 11.4_o and_o by_o that_o faith_n obtain_v witness_n of_o god_n that_o he_o be_v righteous_a 4.4_o for_o which_o cause_n it_o be_v say_v the_o lord_n have_v respect_n to_o he_o and_o to_o his_o offering_n in_o the_o family_n of_o abraham_n and_o isaac_n be_v then_o only_o the_o visible_a church_n ishmael_n isaac_n jaakob_n and_o esau_n receive_v circumcision_n the_o external_a sign_n of_o their_o profession_n by_o reason_n whereof_o every_o of_o they_o be_v account_v true_a worshipper_n of_o the_o god_n of_o abraham_n yet_o isaac_n and_o jaakob_n only_o be_v doer_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n 12.16.17_o as_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n testify_v in_o the_o eleve_v &_o 12._o to_o the_o hebrew_n in_o the_o 50_o psalm_n the_o lord_n himself_o expostulate_v and_o with_o great_a authority_n reason_v with_o the_o first_o sort_n of_o professor_n say_v 50.16_o what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o declare_v my_o ordinance_n that_o thou_o shall_v take_v my_o covenant_n in_o thy_o mouth_n 17_o see_v thou_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v and_o have_v cast_v my_o word_n behind_o thou_o but_o unto_o the_o other_o sort_n he_o speak_v thus_o in_o the_o same_o psalm_n 23_o he_o that_o offer_v praise_n shall_v glorify_v i_o and_o to_o he_o that_o dispose_v his_o way_n aright_o i_o will_v show_v the_o salvation_n of_o god._n wherein_o he_o forbid_v and_o condemn_v the_o outward_a profession_n of_o his_o word_n and_o ordinance_n be_v separate_v from_o the_o right_a disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o life_n but_o be_v join_v together_o he_o promise_v thereunto_o eternal_a salvation_n a_o place_n therefore_o most_o fit_a to_o warrant_v &_o confirm_v these_o two_o sort_n of_o professor_n of_o god_n word_n the_o prophet_n isaiah_n do_v not_o only_o describe_v these_o sort_n of_o professor_n in_o plain_a word_n but_o also_o threaten_v against_o the_o former_a sort_n a_o wonderful_a judgement_n of_o god_n say_v 29.13_o because_o this_o people_n come_v near_o i_o with_o their_o mouth_n and_o honour_v i_o with_o their_o lip_n but_o have_v remove_v their_o heart_n from_o i_o and_o their_o fear_n towards_o i_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o precept_n of_o man_n 14_o therefore_o behold_v i_o will_v again_o do_v a_o marvelous_a work_n in_o this_o people_n even_o a_o marvelous_a work_n and_o a_o wonder_n for_o the_o wisdom_n of_o their_o wise_a man_n shall_v perish_v and_o the_o understanding_n of_o their_o prudent_a man_n shall_v be_v of_o all_o the_o prophet_n who_o as_o they_o have_v great_a experience_n of_o both_o these_o kind_n of_o
government_n of_o israel_n so_o also_o do_v he_o in_o the_o acknowledge_v &_o publish_v unto_o they_o this_o doctrine_n as_o appear_v in_o the_o 22._o chap._n of_o his_o book_n say_v 22.5_o but_o truth_n all_o those_o that_o seem_v to_o embrace_v christ_n jesus_n and_o his_o true_a religion_n as_o libertine_n catholic_n and_o carnal_a protestant_n the_o libertine_n and_o carnal_a protestant_a be_v by_o it_o most_o just_o condemn_v because_o they_o have_v no_o work_n at_o all_o neither_o any_o soundness_n of_o faith_n or_o religion_n but_o only_o a_o false_a persuasion_n and_o vain_a shadow_n of_o both_o as_o the_o apostle_n james_n teach_v in_o the_o whole_a treaty_n of_o his_o epistle_n the_o catholic_n though_o they_o have_v many_o outward_a and_o glorious_a work_v to_o allege_v for_o themselves_o yet_o they_o fail_v altogether_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v for_o not_o only_o their_o judgement_n by_o false_a doctrine_n be_v corrupt_v â—_o in_o that_o they_o teach_v that_o work_n in_o part_n do_v justify_v that_o they_o be_v accept_v the_o better_a for_o the_o virtue_n and_o intercession_n of_o saint_n depart_v that_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o christ_n his_o oblation_n only_o wash_v away_o sin_n commit_v before_o baptism_n last_o that_o a_o temporal_a punishment_n here_o and_o in_o purgatory_n can_v satisfy_v and_o sufficient_o recompense_v that_o transgression_n whereby_o the_o perfect_v law_n and_o infinite_a justice_n of_o god_n be_v break_v but_o also_o they_o fail_v in_o all_o those_o point_n which_o we_o have_v teach_v to_o appertain_v of_o our_o brethren_n do_v they_o not_o most_o uncharitable_o and_o flat_o against_o the_o edification_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_o which_o in_o all_o public_a action_n under_o pain_n of_o damnation_n must_v be_v regard_v teach_v and_o believe_v that_o ignorance_n of_o god_n religion_n be_v the_o mother_n of_o devotion_n do_v they_o not_o read_v the_o word_n pray_v and_o give_v thanks_n in_o a_o strange_a language_n and_o unknown_a tongue_n do_v they_o give_v which_o be_v not_o they_o to_o give_v absolution_n from_o sin_n of_o mere_a love_n and_o not_o for_o money_n final_o do_v they_o vex_v grieve_v torment_n persecute_v and_o burn_v the_o body_n of_o god_n saint_n after_o two_o or_o three_o light_a conference_n and_o disorder_a examination_n because_o they_o love_v their_o body_n and_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n no_o very_o these_o thing_n rather_o do_v manifest_o declare_v not_o only_o that_o they_o be_v destitute_a of_o charity_n towards_o man_n but_o also_o of_o pure_a love_n towards_o god_n for_o he_o that_o say_v he_o love_v god_n and_o hate_v his_o brother_n he_o be_v a_o liar_n for_o how_o can_v he_o that_o love_v not_o his_o brother_n who_o he_o have_v see_v love_n god_o who_o he_o have_v not_o see_v as_o for_o the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n how_o can_v it_o be_v in_o they_o see_v that_o they_o hold_v that_o god_n eternal_a wrath_n against_o our_o sin_n either_o past_a or_o to_o come_v can_v just_o and_o sufficient_o be_v appease_v by_o trifle_a pardon_n and_o bull_n give_v of_o mortal_a man_n and_o to_o be_v short_a consider_v not_o where_o last_o for_o careful_a watchefulnesse_n to_o retain_v all_o the_o foresay_a grace_n how_o can_v it_o be_v in_o they_o see_v they_o be_v void_a and_o destitute_a of_o these_o gracious_a and_o holy_a bread_n offering_n carnal_a fast_n cross_n anointinge_n with_o infinite_a more_o of_o the_o same_o sort_n all_o which_o invention_n of_o man_n be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o that_o worship_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n witness_v to_o consist_v in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n and_o therefore_o just_o condemn_v for_o if_o bodily_a exercise_n which_o may_v be_v well_o use_v be_v neither_o profitable_a of_o themselves_o neither_o any_o part_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n do_v we_o not_o just_o abhor_v and_o detest_v the_o tradition_n which_o be_v after_o the_o commandment_n and_o doctrine_n of_o man_n and_o now_o as_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o they_o fail_v in_o these_o thing_n so_o also_o in_o the_o end_n whereby_o all_o our_o action_n must_v be_v measure_v and_o the_o true_a church_n of_o god_n we_o have_v need_n with_o all_o care_n and_o study_n to_o try_v and_o examine_v the_o very_a bottom_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o rip_v up_o all_o the_o inward_a and_o secret_a corner_n of_o our_o conscience_n lest_o we_o also_o be_v just_o reprove_v and_o condemn_v by_o the_o same_o for_o assure_o we_o must_v all_o in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n be_v try_v and_o make_v know_v to_o the_o world_n by_o the_o practice_n of_o this_o doctrine_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n &_o the_o comfort_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n whether_o we_o have_v true_o taste_v of_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n or_o no_o but_o if_o we_o do_v content_v ourselves_o with_o the_o shadow_n of_o inward_a godliness_n as_o with_o the_o outward_a use_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o supper_n of_o the_o lord_n with_o lip_n service_n and_o such_o external_a kind_n of_o profession_n deny_v the_o power_n thereof_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o work_n we_o deceive_v our_o own_o heart_n we_o deprive_v our_o soul_n of_o the_o joyful_a fruition_n of_o god_n presence_n and_o walk_v as_o fast_o as_o can_v be_v towards_o the_o place_n of_o darkness_n and_o endless_a destruction_n for_o this_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v unto_o i_o lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n but_o he_o that_o do_v the_o and_o examine_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o gold_n silver_n etc_n etc_n be_v try_v by_o the_o fire_n therefore_o paul_n in_o great_a boldness_n and_o authority_n speak_v on_o this_o manner_n to_o the_o corinthian_a preacher_n 4.19_o but_o i_o will_v come_v to_o you_o short_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v and_o will_v know_v not_o the_o speech_n of_o they_o which_o be_v puff_v up_o but_o the_o this_o be_v that_o true_a and_o perfect_a pattern_n of_o preach_v which_o paul_n commit_v to_o timothy_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o utterance_n and_o of_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o he_o charge_v to_o be_v keep_v and_o observe_v that_o he_o may_v be_v a_o example_n to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o word_n in_o conversation_n in_o love_n in_o spirit_n in_o faith_n and_o in_o pureness_n 1.13_o say_v keep_v the_o true_a pattern_n of_o the_o
wholesome_a word_n which_o thou_o have_v hear_v of_o i_o in_o faith_n and_o love_v which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n 14_o that_o worthy_a thing_n which_o be_v commit_v to_o thou_o keep_v through_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o dwell_v in_o us._n and_o to_o titus_n 2.7_o above_o all_o thing_n show_v thyself_o a_o example_n of_o good_a work_n with_o uncorrupt_a doctrine_n 8_o with_o the_o contrary_a to_o it_o for_o it_o give_v no_o life_n to_o those_o which_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n it_o have_v no_o power_n to_o strike_v in_o sunder_o or_o to_o unloose_v the_o hold_n of_o sin_n no_o sharpness_n to_o cut_v a_o sunder_o the_o cord_n of_o wickedness_n it_o can_v not_o enter_v to_o the_o divide_v a_o sunder_o of_o the_o soul_n and_o spirit_n the_o joint_n and_o the_o marrow_n honour_n and_o worldly_a preferment_n no_o marvel_n therefore_o though_o our_o labour_n be_v curse_v and_o not_o bless_v and_o we_o ourselves_o in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n be_v reject_v for_o body_n let_v not_o therefore_o the_o papist_n rejoice_v though_o they_o be_v able_a to_o confirm_v every_o point_n of_o their_o religion_n by_o a_o great_a miracle_n whereas_o in_o deed_n they_o be_v
