A COPIE of the agreement MADE BETWEENE HVRIAN BASSA Gouernour of Tunis and Argier for the great Turke AND THE LORDS the generall States of the vnited Netherland Prouinces Faithfully Translated out of the Spanish and Dutch Copie MDCXXII A COPIE OF THE AGREEMENT MADE BEtweene Hurian Bassha Gouernour of Turis and Argier for the great Turke And the Lords the generall States of the vnited Netherland Prouinces Jn the name of the Almighty God TO the puissant Lords Protectors of the Christian faith The States generall of the vnited Netherland Prouinces wee wish and desire saluation and prosperity with this our Letter wee also send you na assurance of peace and friendly salutation Not long since we receiued a Letter by your Committie IOHN MAVRICO deliuered vnto vs whereby you desire and require of vs the confirmation of the peace and friendship which wee formerly offered and promised vnto you But hetherto there is no man come from the State neither yet haue we heard any newes thereof Our Ships of Warre put foorth to Sea and haue met with diuers of your Ships which haue emboldned themselues to fight with our Ships and would neither refraine them nor strike their sailes as it was agreed vpon But now hauing seene your Letter we thought it good to commit the Netherland Christians whom wee haue here made Slaues into the hands of your Counsell whom wee will suffer to returne peaceably into their owne Countrey when your Ships of Warre and one from you with Letters shall come hether to agree thereon in such manner that all shall be well And we from henceforth promise In the name of God and our great Prophet To hold and obserue true friendship and peace so that if your Marchants will come and Traffick with their Marchandize they may freely come and if your Ships of War will ioyne themselues with vs to set vpon the Spaniards they may securely come for from this time forth your friendship is our friendship and your Enemy our Enemy In such manner that as your Committies are in Turkie so shall your Committie heere also be and remaine vnder the protection defence of our great Lord so that his Commission doth not in any manner tend vnto the contrary by him promised Wee haue commaunded our Ships that are gone out to Sea and those also that are yet to put to Sea that meeting with your Ships at Sea they shall doe them no hurt neither in their Ships sayles nor Anchors nor once to meddle with them In such sort that in the Straights that shall be obserued which wee haue propounded which is that when any of our Ships come thether they shall peaceably lye by them and shoot off their Ordnance in signe of friendship and from this time forwards our peace shal be peace our word our word and our security our security And therefore we wish you to write and send vs your Letter by your Ships of Warre which doing we will doe as you desire Dated in Argier the last of Mossarraua in the 1031. yeare Vnder written and Sealed Hurian Bassa
