god_n himself_o who_o be_v the_o sovereign_a lord_n be_v high_a than_o magistrate_n second_o in_o regard_n of_o government_n and_o direction_n the_o head_n it_o guard_v the_o body_n and_o order_n it_o and_o dispose_n of_o it_o and_o so_o do_v such_o as_o these_o that_o be_v it_o be_v their_o place_n and_o office_n so_o to_o do_v as_o proper_a unto_o they_o three_o in_o regard_n of_o influence_n and_o causality_n the_o head_n it_o do_v communicate_v sense_n and_o life_n and_o motion_n to_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o part_n even_o so_o be_v it_o also_o the_o work_n of_o magistrate_n to_o do_v to_o those_o which_o be_v commit_v unto_o they_o peace_n and_o strength_n and_o safety_n and_o protection_n and_o all_o kind_n of_o welfare_n whatsoever_o which_o they_o be_v capable_a of_o it_o be_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o place_n which_o they_o do_v officiate_v they_o may_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n be_v the_o tail_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o execution_n of_o those_o place_n when_o they_o shall_v carry_v themselves_o in_o they_o either_o negligent_o or_o else_o corrupt_o and_o it_o be_v not_o any_o outward_a dignity_n or_o advancement_n which_o may_v be_v put_v upon_o they_o which_o in_o such_o circumstance_n can_v exempt_v they_o from_o such_o a_o nickname_n as_o this_o be_v and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o first_o kind_n of_o metaphor_n or_o resemblance_n which_o be_v here_o use_v as_o or_o plant_n the_o branch_n and_o the_o rush_n it_o be_v the_o conceit_n of_o the_o philosopher_n that_o man_n be_v a_o tree_n turn_v upside-down_a his_o head_n the_o root_n his_o breath_n the_o especial_o 1._o as_o to_o matter_n of_o opinion_n 2._o of_o contemplation_n 3._o of_o design_n first_o as_o to_o matter_n of_o opinion_n take_v a_o man_n in_o his_o natural_a condition_n and_o he_o have_v many_o strange_a conceit_n in_o his_o head_n whilst_o he_o so_o remain_v as_o it_o be_v say_v concern_v the_o gentile_n rom._n 1.21_o they_o become_v vain_a in_o their_o imagination_n and_o their_o foolish_a heart_n be_v darken_v even_o so_o be_v it_o with_o such_o person_n they_o bring_v religion_n oftentimes_o to_o their_o carnal_a and_o corrupt_a reason_n and_o confine_v it_o to_o that_o but_o now_o convert_v grace_n where_o it_o come_v it_o overthrow_v they_o all_o cast_v down_o imagination_n etc._n etc._n 2_o cor._n 10.5_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o particular_n first_o the_o thought_n of_o sin_n when_o a_o man_n be_v convert_v he_o forsake_v these_o and_o it_o concern_v he_o to_o do_v so_o take_v a_o man_n in_o his_o natural_a condition_n and_o he_o many_o hear_v it_o as_o we_o may_v conceive_v it_o brief_o thus_o according_a to_o these_o explication_n first_o originally_n as_o in_o form_v the_o organ_n of_o the_o body_n when_o the_o ear_n hear_v it_o be_v the_o soul_n hear_v as_o convey_v its_o faculty_n by_o that_o particular_a part_n and_o member_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d it_o be_v the_o mind_n see_v and_o the_o mind_n hear_v and_o all_o bring_v they_o down_o to_o their_o own_o spiritual_a improvement_n and_o advancement_n in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n as_o we_o have_v here_o great_a revelation_n so_o from_o it_o we_o shall_v have_v better_a affection_n but_o second_o to_o come_v more_o close_o to_o the_o particular_a jeremy_n cry_v out_o of_o his_o bowel_n here_o he_o have_v hear_v the_o sound_n of_o the_o trumpet_n etc._n and_o also_o to_o excuse_v their_o secret_a and_o inwad_n abomination_n by_o outward_a and_o glorious_a practice_n which_o be_v see_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o world_n three_o this_o pharisaical_a righteousness_n it_o be_v also_o defective_a in_o regard_n of_o its_o effect_n in_o that_o it_o do_v not_o reach_v to_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v desirable_a in_o it_o as_o first_o it_o be_v such_o as_o do_v not_o satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n that_o righteousness_n which_o do_v not_o satisfy_v god_n justice_n it_o can_v bring_v a_o man_n to_o heaven_n because_o notwithstanding_o that_o righteousness_n he_o be_v liable_a to_o eternal_a condemnation_n where_o the_o debt_n be_v not_o pay_v the_o debtor_n can_v be_v discharge_v all_o a_o man_n external_a righteousness_n it_o will_v better_o who_o never_o have_v sin_n set_v home_o upon_o their_o heart_n nor_o their_o conscience_n ever_o enlighten_v to_o see_v the_o wretchedness_n of_o their_o
deceive_v you_o with_o vain_a word_n for_o because_o of_o these_o thing_n come_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n rev._n 21.8_o the_o abominable_a be_v say_v to_o malicious_a spirit_n and_o affection_n in_o they_o against_o the_o way_n of_o god_n such_o as_o these_o be_v of_o a_o devilish_a nature_n and_o the_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n rule_v in_o they_o they_o be_v therefore_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o government_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o those_o other_o person_n in_o this_o chapter_n which_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n and_o herodian_o they_o come_v to_o he_o with_o a_o malicious_a affection_n to_o entangle_v he_o and_o ensnare_v he_o in_o his_o speech_n and_o thereby_o to_o betray_v he_o who_o therefore_o be_v say_v here_o implicit_o to_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n which_o this_o honest_a scribe_n be_v not_o and_o so_o in_o other_o place_n of_o the_o gospel_n our_o saviour_n do_v in_o special_a manner_n strike_v at_o the_o pharisee_n for_o thus_o their_o malicious_a oppose_a and_o contradict_v of_o the_o know_a truth_n which_o do_v set_v man_n in_o as_o great_a a_o distance_n to_o this_o purpose_n as_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o nothing_o more_o even_o there_o where_o it_o be_v veil_v with_o the_o fair_a pretence_n that_o may_v be_v three_o all_o such_o person_n as_o be_v mere_o civil_a or_o formal_a which_o have_v no_o more_o but_o common_a and_o moral_a honesty_n in_o they_o though_o this_o in_o itself_o and_o simple_o consider_v be_v very_o good_a we_o do_v not_o speak_v against_o it_o nor_o have_v not_o need_v in_o these_o time_n yet_o such_o i_o say_v who_o be_v no_o more_o than_o so_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o infinite_a distance_n betwixt_o civility_n and_o piety_n betwixt_o god_n nature_n and_o grace_n betwixt_o formality_n and_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n those_o which_o go_v no_o far_o than_o that_o they_o come_v far_o short_a of_o this_o and_o so_o in_o conclusion_n if_o they_o go_v no_o far_o of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o consequent_a of_o it_o eternal_a life_n thus_o our_o saviour_n himself_o tell_v we_o matt._n 5.20_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o that_o except_o your_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n you_o shall_v in_o no_o case_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n the_o somewhat_o more_o in_o they_o than_o this_o or_o no_o salvation_n and_o thus_o it_o have_v likewise_o be_v apprehend_v by_o those_o who_o god_n have_v please_v to_o enlighten_v and_o to_o work_v a_o further_a work_n in_o they_o as_o for_o instance_n the_o apostle_n paul_n himself_n we_o can_v have_v a_o better_a proof_n of_o this_o point_n than_o in_o his_o epistle_n by_o consider_v he_o what_o he_o be_v before_o conversion_n and_o consider_v he_o what_o he_o be_v after_o take_v it_o from_o his_o own_o mouth_n gal._n 1.14_o he_o there_o tell_v we_o what_o he_o have_v be_v before_o how_o he_o he_o have_v profit_v in_o the_o jew_n religion_n above_o many_o of_o his_o equal_n and_o have_v be_v exceed_o zealous_a of_o the_o tradition_n of_o his_o father_n so_o phil._n 3.6_o he_o say_v that_o a_o double_a defect_n or_o insufficiency_n in_o mere_a civility_n to_o this_o purpose_n first_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n or_o matter_n which_o it_o be_v exercise_v about_o which_o be_v considerable_a chief_o in_o the_o inferior_a thing_n of_o the_o law_n and_o such_o as_o do_v regulate_v and_o reform_v the_o outward_a conversation_n as_o justice_z and_o temperance_n and_o sobriety_n and_o such_o as_o these_o but_o as_o for_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o weighty_a and_o more_o substantial_a matter_n as_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n here_o it_o be_v more_o lax_n and_o remiss_a or_o nothing_o at_o all_o second_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o principle_n and_o spring_n whence_o these_o action_n proceed_v which_o be_v not_o a_o heart_n any_o thing_n change_v or_o renew_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o its_o mind_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v but_o still_o remain_v in_o its_o natural_a condition_n and_o original_a corruption_n and_o defilement_n which_o it_o have_v contract_v to_o itself_o in_o each_o of_o these_o respect_n do_v civility_n shall_v short_v of_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o let_v none_o of_o we_o rest_n satisfy_v or_o content_v with_o it_o let_v this_o be_v the_o use_n and_o improvement_n which_o we_o make_v of_o this_o observation_n to_o labour_v to_o find_v a_o further_a work_n than_o this_o come_v to_o upon_o our_o heart_n a_o sight_n of_o our_o wretched_a and_o miserable_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o mourn_v under_o it_o a_o new_a bias_n and_o inclination_n put_v upon_o we_o carry_v we_o out_o to_o that_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n a_o close_n with_o christ_n upon_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o forsake_v our_o dear_a lust_n to_o forego_v our_o strong_a corruption_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o he_o shall_v lay_v upon_o we_o to_o deny_v ourselves_o perfect_o for_o he_o and_o to_o submit_v to_o his_o sceptre_n and_o government_n to_o take_v place_n in_o we_o to_o have_v a_o special_a savour_n and_o relish_v of_o the_o truth_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n especial_o as_o they_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o pertinent_a to_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o religion_n to_o love_v the_o child_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o account_n because_o they_o be_v his_o child_n and_o have_v his_o image_n enstamp_v upon_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a be_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v somewhat_o further_o than_o mere_a civility_n and_o the_o common_a honesty_n of_o the_o world_n which_o whosoever_o have_v not_o in_o themselves_o more_o or_o less_o and_o in_o some_o kind_n of_o measure_n and_o degree_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o in_o this_o distance_n and_o remoteness_n
as_o the_o other_o a_o mere_a civil_a man_n he_o be_v only_o propior_fw-la a_o salute_n he_o be_v near_a from_o salvation_n but_o for_o to_o it_o that_o he_o be_v not_o and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o explication_n of_o this_o proposition_n which_o we_o be_v now_o upon_o now_o these_o thing_n be_v thus_o premise_v we_o do_v yet_o say_v notwithstanding_o that_o as_o to_o god_n ordinary_a and_o more_o usual_a dispensation_n of_o himself_o so_o a_o man_n that_o live_v civil_o be_v in_o a_o more_o likelihood_n and_o fair_a way_n for_o conversion_n than_o a_o man_n that_o live_v profane_o there_o be_v more_o hope_n of_o the_o one_o than_o there_o be_v of_o the_o other_o of_o the_o former_a than_o there_o be_v of_o the_o latter_a so_o to_o he_o that_o have_v shall_v be_v give_v as_o our_o bless_a saviour_n speak_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o open_v this_o a_o little_a further_o to_o we_o we_o yet_o say_v two_o thing_n more_o first_o that_o god_n do_v not_o always_o and_o infallible_o go_v by_o this_o rule_n without_o exception_n that_o be_v to_o give_v his_o grace_n to_o a_o civil_a man_n when_o he_o deny_v it_o to_o a_o profane_a nay_o he_o many_o time_n do_v the_o contrary_a he_o oftentimes_o leave_v a_o mere_a moral_a man_n in_o his_o sin_n when_o as_o yet_o he_o be_v please_v to_o draw_v and_o pull_v a_o profane_a man_n out_o of_o they_o he_o be_v find_v of_o they_o that_o seek_v he_o not_o he_o be_v manifest_a to_o they_o which_o ask_v not_o after_o he_o isa_n 65.1_o the_o corinthian_n and_o ephesian_n and_o colossian_n before_o their_o conversion_n they_o be_v most_o grievous_a and_o notorious_a offender_n and_o so_o it_o have_v be_v with_o many_o other_o which_o be_v now_o convert_v and_o bring_v home_o to_o god_n so_o that_o i_o say_v he_o do_v not_o absolute_o and_o indefinite_o bind_v himself_o to_o it_o as_o he_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o it_o from_o any_o congruous_a disposition_n in_o a_o civil_a person_n himself_o so_o neither_o from_o his_o own_o divine_a purpose_n or_o resolution_n god_n be_v and_o will_v be_v free_a in_o all_o these_o thing_n nor_o yet_o second_o do_v we_o say_v that_o it_o be_v easy_a in_o regard_n of_o god_n himself_o to_o do_v it_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o or_o less_o hard_a to_o all-sufficiency_n and_o omnipotency_n itself_o god_n grace_n be_v of_o a_o infinite_a power_n every_o thing_n be_v emollere_fw-la majorem_fw-la duritiem_fw-la and_o he_o do_v edomare_a majorem_fw-la ferocitatem_fw-la he_o take_v away_o great_a resistance_n and_o he_o soften_v great_a hardness_n and_o he_o suppress_v great_a untamedness_n in_o the_o one_o than_o he_o do_v in_o the_o other_o this_o be_v the_o distance_n and_o difference_n betwixt_o they_o god_n grace_n work_v upon_o a_o civil_a man_n be_v like_o fire_n in_o the_o consume_n of_o dry_a wood_n but_o god_n grace_n work_v upon_o a_o wicked_a man_n be_v like_o fire_n in_o the_o consume_n of_o green_a wood_n where_o both_o of_o they_o be_v burn_v up_o but_o one_o of_o they_o with_o the_o great_a opposition_n and_o repugnancy_n in_o the_o fuel_n itself_o to_o the_o burn_a of_o it_o and_o so_o answerable_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v conversion_n in_o such_o as_o these_o more_o difficult_a in_o regard_n of_o themselves_o and_o with_o great_a trouble_n and_o affliction_n to_o they_o there_o be_v more_o of_o the_o break_a bone_n of_o the_o terror_n and_o bruising_n of_o the_o almighty_a in_o the_o conversion_n of_o scandalous_a sinner_n and_o those_o who_o have_v live_v wicked_o and_o debauched_o than_o there_o be_v in_o the_o conversion_n of_o those_o who_o have_v be_v more_o free_a from_o such_o kind_n of_o offence_n as_o these_o be_v thus_o we_o see_v what_o cause_n there_o be_v for_o man_n to_o be_v encourage_v in_o way_n of_o civility_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o way_n of_o looseness_n and_o profaneness_n not_o only_o as_o hereby_o avoid_v the_o great_a condemnation_n and_o as_o have_v less_o punishment_n attend_v thereupon_o but_o likewise_o as_o be_v not_o so_o far_o though_o far_o enough_o from_o a_o state_n of_o conversion_n a_o state_n of_o civility_n be_v not_o so_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o a_o state_n of_o profaneness_n but_o yet_o this_o again_o will_v admit_v of_o a_o further_a explication_n of_o it_o still_o to_o bring_v it_o home_o to_o the_o full_a and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o though_o a_o state_n of_o civility_n be_v not_o so_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o a_o state_n of_o profaneness_n simple_o and_o absolute_o consider_v yet_o occasional_o and_o accidental_o it_o may_v be_v far_o a_o civil_a man_n in_o some_o case_n may_v be_v further_o off_o from_o conversion_n than_o a_o profane_a yea_o and_o oftentimes_o be_v though_o not_o further_o off_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o term_n yet_o further_o off_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o event_n and_o actual_a accomplishment_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v this_o because_o a_o profane_a person_n which_o commit_v such_o gross_a sin_n as_o be_v odious_a to_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n such_o a_o one_o be_v easy_o convince_v of_o the_o wickedness_n and_o vileness_n of_o his_o way_n from_o whence_o he_o be_v draw_v to_o close_v with_o christ_n upon_o his_o own_o condition_n out_o of_o the_o necessity_n which_o he_o apprehend_v he_o have_v of_o he_o whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o civil_a person_n which_o be_v guilty_a of_o none_o of_o those_o crime_n he_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v so_o far_o opinionate_a and_o conceit_a of_o his_o own_o civil_a righteousness_n and_o that_o goodness_n which_o he_o have_v already_o in_o himself_o as_o to_o think_v that_o he_o have_v no_o need_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n but_o may_v do_v very_o well_o without_o he_o and_o so_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o that_o remedy_n which_o otherwise_o he_o may_v be_v supply_v withal_o as_o it_o be_v sometime_o in_o the_o body_n those_o which_o have_v great_a sickness_n they_o many_o time_n get_v up_o and_o recover_v while_o those_o which_o have_v some_o small_a distemper_n do_v perhaps_o die_v under_o it_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o how_o come_v it_o about_o why_o the_o one_o think_v himself_o to_o be_v in_o danger_n go_v to_o the_o physician_n the_o other_o be_v more_o secure_a neglect_v he_o and_o look_v not_o after_o he_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o man_n also_o in_o religion_n civility_n trust_v in_o be_v further_o off_o from_o conversion_n than_o profaneness_n in_o the_o effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o it_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o jew_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o gentile_n the_o gentile_n simple_o consider_v be_v far_o great_a sinner_n than_o they_o yet_o in_o this_o event_n save_v before_o they_o as_o the_o apostle_n express_v it_o in_o rom._n 9.30_o 31._o what_o shall_v we_o say_v they_o that_o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v to_o righteousness_n even_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o faith_n but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n have_v not_o atttain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n so_o again_o rom._n 10.3_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n and_o go_v about_o to_o establish_v their_o own_o righteousness_n have_v not_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n where_o we_o see_v that_o man_n own_o righteousness_n be_v occasional_o a_o hindrance_n to_o they_o of_o their_o look_v after_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n this_o be_v likewise_o the_o case_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n in_o comparison_n with_o the_o publican_n and_o harlot_n mat._n 21.31_o our_o saviour_n there_o tell_v they_o that_o the_o publican_n and_o harlot_n go_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n before_o themselves_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n be_v person_n of_o a_o strict_a conversation_n as_o i_o show_v before_o the_o publican_n and_o
our_o heart_n do_v thereby_o bring_v we_o to_o glory_n and_o make_v we_o partaker_n of_o his_o heavenly_a kingdom_n and_o so_o they_o be_v all_o upon_o the_o point_n one_o and_o the_o same_o and_z we_o have_v need_n of_o food_n and_o raiment_n and_o employment_n and_o thing_n conduce_v to_o these_o as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v his_o disciple_n in_o another_o place_n your_o heavenly_a father_n the_o hide_a manna_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o the_o like_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o great_a intricacy_n and_o imperceptibility_n which_o be_v upon_o it_o as_o that_o which_o be_v so_o difficult_o apprehend_v it_o be_v such_o as_o the_o best_a that_o be_v and_o those_o who_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o it_o do_v not_o discern_v or_o apprehend_v perfect_o but_o it_o be_v such_o as_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a person_n do_v not_o discern_v at_o all_o the_o natural_a man_n receive_v not_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v foolishness_n unto_o he_o neither_o can_v he_o know_v they_o because_o they_o be_v spiritual_o discern_v as_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o 2_o cor._n 2.14_o indeed_o such_o person_n as_o these_o may_v discourse_v at_o random_n about_o it_o and_o speak_v problematical_o of_o it_o as_o the_o philosopher_n do_v of_o the_o wind_n and_o they_o may_v have_v some_o common_a notion_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o as_o far_o as_o part_n and_o book_n will_v carry_v they_o but_o to_o speak_v distinct_o and_o understand_o of_o it_o that_o they_o can_v do_v as_o want_v the_o sense_n and_o experience_n of_o it_o upon_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o those_o that_o have_v this_o experience_n of_o it_o yet_o be_v they_o to_o seek_v of_o it_o in_o sundry_a particular_n we_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o it_o in_o either_o of_o these_o person_n whether_o those_o who_o be_v not_o regenerate_v or_o which_o be_v so_o and_o so_o show_v you_o how_o either_o of_o they_o be_v in_o their_o kind_n ignorant_a of_o this_o mystery_n first_o take_v it_o as_o to_o those_o who_o be_v regenerate_v and_o themselves_o partaker_n of_o this_o new-birth_n and_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n even_o such_o as_o these_o can_v give_v a_o account_n of_o it_o in_o some_o particular_n which_o be_v belong_v unto_o it_o as_o to_o instance_n a_o little_a in_o some_o few_o among_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o manner_n of_o work_v of_o it_o not_o able_a to_o determine_v and_o we_o may_v apply_v hereunto_o that_o which_o the_o preacher_n have_v of_o the_o natural_a generation_n as_o thou_o know_v not_o what_o be_v the_o way_n of_o the_o spirit_n nor_o how_o the_o bone_n do_v grow_v in_o the_o womb_n of_o she_o that_o be_v with_o child_n even_o so_o thou_o know_v not_o the_o work_n of_o god_n that_o make_v all_o eccl._n 11.5_o and_o the_o argument_n it_o hold_v here_o in_o this_o particular_a business_n a_o fortiori_fw-la if_o we_o can_v discover_v the_o mystery_n of_o nature_n much_o less_o the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n and_o if_o not_o the_o thing_n of_o earth_n how_o much_o less_o the_o thing_n of_o heaven_n which_o be_v so_o far_o remote_a from_o humane_a understanding_n this_o be_v the_o very_a scope_n and_o drift_n of_o our_o saviour_n here_o in_o the_o text_n to_o conclude_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o that_o because_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o wind_n be_v imperceptible_a therefore_o be_v also_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o we_o may_v reason_v likewise_o as_o to_o other_o thing_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o it_o as_o for_o example_n the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o production_n of_o that_o whether_o by_o creation_n or_o generation_n whether_o as_o infuse_v by_o god_n himself_o or_o as_o result_v out_o of_o the_o matter_n prepare_v we_o know_v there_o be_v great_a dispute_n about_o it_o and_o difficulty_n in_o it_o now_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o as_o to_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o natural_a state_n of_o it_o how_o much_o more_o may_v it_o be_v thus_o with_o it_o in_o the_o spiritual_a this_o god_n will_v have_v to_o be_v for_o this_o reason_n among_o the_o rest_n that_o so_o we_o may_v the_o more_o adore_v he_o and_o acknowledge_v he_o in_o such_o work_n as_o these_o be_v and_o say_v that_o it_o be_v he_o that_o have_v make_v we_o and_o not_o we_o ourselves_o not_o only_o as_o to_o our_o first_o make_v but_o as_o to_o our_o second_o his_o company_n from_o a_o great_a danger_n which_o happen_v unto_o they_o and_o therein_o express_v his_o thankfulness_n and_o holy_a rejoice_n as_o also_o give_v we_o a_o hint_n of_o expectation_n of_o further_a deliverance_n from_o the_o like_a danger_n that_o may_v happen_v unto_o they_o and_o therein_o express_v his_o hope_n and_o most_o holy_a faith_n who_o deliver_v we_o from_o so_o great_a a_o death_n and_o do_v deliver_v in_o who_o we_o trust_v also_o etc._n etc._n this_o passage_n it_o relate_v to_o a_o story_n which_o we_o meet_v withal_o in_o act._n 19.29_o 30._o which_o care_n which_o be_v to_o be_v use_v for_o the_o avoid_n of_o it_o the_o danger_n suppose_v that_o be_v this_o that_o we_o be_v apt_a and_o ready_a to_o do_v so_o without_o better_a heed_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o let_v these_o thing_n slip_v the_o care_n which_o be_v to_o be_v use_v for_o the_o avoid_n of_o it_o that_o be_v by_o take_v good_a heed_n we_o be_v to_o take_v heed_n lest_o we_o let_v they_o slip_v first_o i_o say_v here_o be_v the_o suppose_a danger_n we_o be_v apt_a to_o do_v so_o to_o let_v they_o slip_v when_o we_o have_v hear_v any_o such_o point_n as_o these_o be_v to_o let_v they_o go_v from_o we_o otherwise_o the_o apostle_n will_v not_o have_v lay_v such_o a_o strict_a charge_n and_o caution_n upon_o we_o as_o consider_v the_o danger_n and_z according_o sets_z and_z applies_z himself_z what_o he_o can_v to_o the_o prevention_n of_o it_o in_o we_o now_o the_o danger_n lie_v in_o these_o respect_n first_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n themselves_o which_o be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n but_o very_o slight_a and_o superficial_a retainer_n we_o have_v but_o weak_a and_o slippery_a memory_n and_o we_o have_v but_o easy_a and_o shallow_a understanding_n and_o we_o have_v but_o hollow_a and_o empty_a heart_n for_o the_o most_o part_n in_o we_o and_o these_o do_v very_o quick_o let_v slip_v those_o which_o have_v no_o grace_n at_o all_o in_o they_o they_o be_v hallow_v quite_o thorough_a a_o bottle_n with_o the_o stopple_n out_o of_o it_o a_o tub_n full_a of_o hole_n indeed_o those_o which_o have_v grace_n and_o be_v bear_v again_o and_o have_v oil_n in_o their_o vessel_n these_o vessel_n of_o they_o be_v very_o chary_a and_o tender_a and_o weak_a and_o impersect_v in_o they_o insomuch_o as_o they_o be_v ever_o and_o anon_o ready_a to_o run_v out_o if_o there_o be_v not_o the_o great_a care_n and_o circumspection_n have_v about_o they_o and_o look_v unto_o they_o so_o then_o that_o be_v one_o account_n of_o this_o danger_n to_o wit_n from_o the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o our_o own_o mind_n themselves_o the_o second_o be_v from_o the_o care_n and_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n mingle_v themselves_o with_o we_o these_o be_v another_o occasion_n of_o this_o break_n or_o overflow_a as_o a_o vessel_n when_o it_o have_v wine_n in_o it_o if_o you_o put_v too_o much_o water_n into_o it_o it_o will_v make_v it_o run_v over_o or_o if_o you_o pierce_v it_o than_o it_o will_v run_v out_o this_o be_v the_o notion_n and_o condition_n of_o these_o worldly_a matter_n they_o be_v great_a piercer_n which_o make_v hole_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o let_v out_o that_o precious_a liquor_n which_o be_v put_v into_o they_o as_o it_o be_v say_v express_o in_o 1_o tim._n 6.10_o the_o love_n of_o money_n be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a which_o while_o some_o have_v covet_v after_o they_o have_v err_v from_o the_o faith_n and_o pierce_v themselves_o through_o with_o many_o sorrow_n the_o love_n of_o money_n and_o of_o the_o world_n it_o be_v a_o pierce_a and_o such_o as_o will_v have_v sorrow_n attend_v it_o in_o those_o person_n which_o give_v fall_v to_o their_o thought_n and_o discourse_n of_o their_o gain_n and_o profit_n and_o commodity_n and_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v how_o can_v they_o choose_v but_o make_v hole_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o let_v slip_v such_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n and_o truth_n as_o be_v preach_v unto_o they_o three_o satan_n he_o stand_v at_o our_o elbow_n and_o give_v we_o a_o jog_v that_o be_v another_o cause_n of_o this_o danger_n whereof_o we_o now_o speak_v though_o a_o cup_n or_o vessel_n be_v sound_a and_o whole_a no_o pierce_a at_o all_o of_o it_o yet_o if_o it_o be_v shake_v it_o may_v chance_v to_o overflow_v to_o spill_v and_o let_v out_o that_o which_o be_v in_o it_o and_o so_o be_v it_o here_o as_o we_o have_v it_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a mat._n 13.19_o
