temperate_a man_n to_o the_o health_n of_o his_o body_n and_o to_o the_o health_n of_o his_o mind_n from_o the_o health_n of_o both_o which_o arise_v the_o great_a good_a which_o he_o be_v capable_a of_o at_o present_a and_o also_o to_o the_o enrichment_n of_o the_o public_a for_o the_o less_o be_v consume_v at_o home_n of_o any_o thing_n serviceable_a to_o life_n the_o more_o remain_v to_o be_v export_v abroad_o by_o way_n of_o trade_n justice_z and_o charity_n be_v immediate_o visible_o beneficial_a to_o society_n and_o they_o purchase_v to_o the_o just_a and_o charitable_a person_n not_o only_o the_o agreeable_a comfort_n of_o a_o good_a reputation_n but_o great_a measure_n of_o security_n to_o be_v treat_v with_o justice_n again_o and_o reasonable_a hope_n to_o find_v a_o return_n of_o charity_n in_o time_n of_o need_n now_o such_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o virtue_n so_o proportion_v and_o fit_v to_o all_o the_o honest_a desire_n and_o noble_a end_n of_o mankind_n in_o this_o state_n it_o will_v become_v a_o wise_a man_n in_o some_o case_n to_o practice_v it_o even_o though_o he_o be_v sure_o there_o be_v no_o reward_n nothing_o to_o be_v get_v by_o it_o hereafter_o but_o then_o there_o be_v other_o case_n in_o which_o virtue_n though_o always_o serviceable_a to_o society_n may_v accidental_o happen_v to_o be_v unserviceable_a to_o a_o private_a man_n and_o whole_o unable_a to_o create_v he_o present_a joy_n equal_a to_o the_o labour_n and_o danger_n thereof_o nay_o there_o be_v case_n in_o which_o some_o virtue_n aim_v at_o the_o service_n of_o the_o public_a may_v become_v effectual_a to_o the_o utter_a ruin_n of_o a_o man_n fortune_n friend_n health_n life_n now_o if_o it_o be_v ever_o odds_o against_o a_o man_n that_o his_o virtue_n shall_v not_o be_v there_o be_v not_o one_o instance_n of_o virtue_n more_o wide_o beneficial_a and_o more_o true_o glorious_a than_o a_o wise_a and_o resolute_a use_n of_o all_o lawful_a likely_a mean_n to_o preserve_v to_o that_o society_n whereof_o we_o be_v member_n the_o safe_a and_o secure_a enjoyment_n of_o their_o trade_n and_o liberty_n the_o satisfaction_n and_o pleasure_n of_o mind_n in_o labour_v this_o of_o man_n write_v in_o book_n be_v both_o make_v insignificant_a and_o useless_a good_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o prove_v a_o defect_n of_o wisdom_n in_o their_o author_n but_o among_o those_o who_o question_n the_o future_a state_n some_o there_o be_v who_o willing_o grant_v that_o the_o fear_v of_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n vengeance_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o future_a misery_n have_v both_o this_o i_o reply_v it_o must_v be_v grant_v that_o the_o wise_a heathen_n who_o have_v form_v their_o virtue_n on_o the_o noble_a principle_n the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o a_o conscience_n exercise_v in_o all_o manner_n of_o well-doing_n have_v just_o condemn_v that_o abstinence_n from_o vice_n which_o be_v enforce_v mere_o by_o a_o dread_n of_o the_o rod_n and_o axe_n of_o improbable_a as_o the_o impostor_n mahomet_n paradise_n i_o be_o far_o from_o think_v such_o scheme_n necessary_a or_o useful_a to_o virtuous_a end_n and_o purpose_n but_o i_o look_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o a_o future_a state_n wherein_o it_o will_v be_v well_o with_o the_o virtuous_a and_o ill_o with_o vicious_a man_n as_o the_o only_a sure_a foundation_n which_o can_v firm_o bear_v the_o whole_a superstructure_n of_o morality_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v to_o be_v every_o man_n interest_n to_o be_v sober_a and_o chaste_a just_a and_o merciful_a charitable_a and_o holy_a in_o the_o worst_a of_o time_n and_o most_o unhappy_a circumstance_n it_o may_v seem_v perhaps_o to_o some_o that_o my_o former_a discourse_n contradict_v what_o i_o here_o advance_v for_o i_o have_v admit_v that_o the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n the_o joy_n of_o a_o mind_n reflect_v on_o its_o own_o virtuous_a disposition_n and_o beneficial_a act_n be_v far_o more_o pleasant_a and_o joyous_a than_o the_o joy_n and_o pleasure_n of_o sense_n and_o that_o the_o torment_n of_o a_o mind_n reflect_v on_o its_o own_o criminal_a disorder_n irregular_a and_o unnatural_a passion_n and_o affection_n be_v far_o more_o punish_v than_o the_o pain_n of_o a_o wound_a or_o disease_a body_n now_o judge_v at_o first_o sight_n this_o may_v be_v mistake_v for_o a_o good_a argument_n it_o be_v most_o probable_a that_o the_o bulk_n of_o mankind_n shall_v be_v virtuous_a because_o in_o this_o life_n there_o be_v most_o to_o be_v get_v by_o virtue_n most_o to_o be_v lose_v and_o suffer_v by_o of_o the_o power_n of_o reason_v in_o our_o first_o year_n we_o be_v bear_v indeed_o with_o a_o docility_n above_o all_o other_o creature_n that_o we_o know_v of_o with_o a_o capacity_n of_o learning_n to_o reason_n but_o we_o learn_v it_o by_o slow_a degree_n a_o long_a while_o we_o live_v only_o the_o life_n of_o sense_n and_o then_o our_o choice_n be_v govern_v whole_o by_o our_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o we_o have_v no_o regard_n to_o any_o but_o ourselves_o except_o to_o they_o who_o gratify_v our_o desire_n nay_o which_o be_v worse_o than_o all_o this_o they_o that_o have_v the_o most_o careful_a education_n do_v not_o miss_v the_o sight_n of_o many_o vicious_a example_n to_o prefer_v ourselves_o before_o all_o other_o and_o indulge_v our_o sensual_a appetite_n
