sanctify_v i._n e._n have_v separate_v his_o church_n by_o the_o wash_n of_o water_n and_o the_o word_n i_o wonder_v that_o the_o author_n shall_v say_v that_o these_o scripture_n be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o notion_n that_o christ_n intend_v the_o salvation_n of_o no_o particular_a christian_n but_o consider_v as_o member_n of_o a_o church_n i_o answer_v they_o be_v ever_o just_a so_o much_o agreeable_a to_o his_o notion_n as_o the_o text_n beforenamed_n he_o say_v all_o acknowledge_v that_o baptism_n be_v a_o ceremony_n initiate_a we_o into_o christianity_n i_o wonder_v who_o acknowledge_v
thing_n upon_o man_n conscience_n as_o necessary_a which_o be_v doubtful_a or_o unlawful_a and_o wherever_o the_o same_o thing_n be_v do_v there_o be_v a_o usurpation_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n though_o not_o in_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n and_o it_o may_v be_v as_o lawful_a to_o withdraw_v communion_n from_o one_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o be_v rule_v by_o their_o governor_n in_o determine_v what_o thing_n be_v lawful_a and_o what_o not_o to_o this_o it_o be_v answer_v first_o no_o true_a protestant_n can_v swear_v blind_a obedience_n to_o church_n governor_n in_o all_o thing_n it_o be_v the_o high_a usurpation_n to_o rob_v man_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o their_o judgement_n that_o which_o we_o plead_v for_o against_o the_o papist_n be_v that_o all_o man_n have_v their_o eye_n in_o their_o head_n as_o well_o as_o the_o pope_n that_o every_o one_o have_v a_o judicium_fw-la privatae_fw-la discretionis_fw-la which_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o practice_n as_o to_o himself_o and_o though_o we_o free_o allow_v a_o ministerial_a power_n under_o christ_n in_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n yet_o that_o extend_v not_o to_o a_o obligation_n upon_o man_n to_o go_v against_o the_o dictate_v of_o their_o own_o reason_n and_o conscience_n etc._n etc._n a_o man_n have_v not_o the_o power_n over_o his_o own_o understanding_n much_o less_o can_v other_o have_v it_o nullus_fw-la credit_n aliquid_fw-la esse_fw-la verum_fw-la quia_fw-la vult_fw-la credere_fw-la id_fw-la esse_fw-la verum_fw-la non_fw-la est_fw-la in_o potestate_fw-la hominis_fw-la facere_fw-la aliquid_fw-la apparere_fw-la intellectui_fw-la svo_fw-la verum_fw-la quando_fw-la volucrit_fw-fr either_o therefore_o man_n be_v bind_v to_o obey_v church_n governor_n in_o all_o thing_n absolute_o without_o restriction_n or_o limitation_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o usurpation_n and_o dominion_n over_o other_o faith_n in_o they_o and_o what_o not_o which_o be_v command_v as_o when_o all_o be_v say_v every_o man_n will_v be_v his_o own_o judge_n in_o this_o case_n in_o thing_n concern_v his_o own_o welfare_n than_o he_o be_v no_o further_o bind_v to_o obey_v than_o he_o judge_n the_o thing_n to_o be_v lawful_a which_o be_v command_v the_o plea_n of_o a_o erroneous_a conscience_n take_v not_o off_o the_o obligation_n to_o follow_v the_o dictate_v of_o it_o for_o as_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o lay_v it_o down_o suppose_v it_o erroneous_a so_o he_o be_v bind_v not_o to_o go_v against_o it_o while_o it_o be_v not_o lay_v down_o these_o testimony_n be_v so_o clear_a and_o back_v with_o such_o unanswerable_a reason_n that_o i_o shall_v now_o not_o scruple_n to_o qualify_v the_o proposition_n under_o consideration_n thus_o that_o where_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n so_o say_v he_o i_o add_v or_o the_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v suspect_v to_o be_v sinful_a be_v require_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o communion_n there_o a_o withdraw_a be_v lawful_a and_o not_o at_o all_o schismatical_a have_v thus_o give_v a_o account_n of_o these_o different_a scene_n in_o which_o both_o he_o and_o i_o do_v understand_v the_o several_a part_n of_o this_o proposition_n i_o shall_v now_o come_v to_o examine_v what_o he_o have_v say_v for_o the_o confirmation_n thereof_o there_o be_v say_v he_o p._n 19_o but_o two_o case_n wherein_o it_o can_v be_v lawful_a to_o withdraw_v communion_n from_o a_o church_n one_o be_v when_o the_o church_n require_v of_o we_o as_o a_o condition_n of_o her_o communion_n a_o acknowledgement_n and_o profession_n of_o that_o to_o be_v truth_n which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v a_o error_n the_o other_o be_v when_o she_o require_v of_o we_o the_o join_n with_o she_o in_o some_o practice_n which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n though_o i_o will_v not_o be_v so_o confident_a to_o say_v with_o this_o author_n that_o only_o in_o these_o two_o case_n it_o may_v be_v lawful_a to_o withdraw_v communion_n for_o there_o may_v be_v a_o three_o and_o a_o four_o which_o neither_o he_o nor_o i_o may_v at_o present_a think_v of_o yet_o so_o far_o i_o agree_v with_o he_o that_o these_o two_o case_n mention_v be_v just_a cause_n of_o withdraw_a communion_n but_o whereas_o he_o say_v that_o the_o error_n must_v be_v know_v to_o be_v such_o and_o the_o practice_n know_v to_o be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n to_o that_o i_o say_v that_o knowledge_n imply_v certainty_n but_o i_o say_v if_o the_o error_n and_o practice_n be_v but_o suspect_v so_o as_o the_o conscience_n do_v but_o doubt_n it_o be_v sufficient_a as_o i_o have_v prove_v from_o the_o apostle_n and_o the_o testimony_n and_o reason_n of_o mr._n hales_n and_o dr._n stillingsleet_n this_o be_v premise_v i_o shall_v now_o proceed_v to_o a_o consideration_n of_o those_o ground_n which_o he_o suppose_v nonconformist_n plead_v as_o sufficient_a cause_n of_o their_o separation_n as_o they_o be_v enumerate_v and_o affirm_v by_o he_o to_o be_v insufficient_a first_o he_o say_v vnscriptural_a imposition_n can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a cause_n to_o warrant_v a_o separation_n from_o a_o church_n answer_v by_o unscriptural_a imposition_n he_o suppose_v as_o he_o tell_v we_o be_v mean_v no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n neither_o by_o particular_a or_o general_a rule_n thus_o when_o he_o have_v by_o a_o false_a supposition_n fashion_v and_o erect_v a_o man_n of_o straw_n he_o than_o push_v he_o quite_o down_o with_o the_o horn_n of_o a_o dilemma_n and_o fancy_n to_o himself_o a_o great_a victory_n for_o from_o that_o supposition_n he_o thus_o argue_v those_o unscriptural_a imposition_n which_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v by_o any_o general_a or_o particular_a rule_n in_o scripture_n be_v eitherin_o themselves_o lawful_a or_o unlawful_a if_o unlawful_a than_o they_o be_v against_o some_o particular_a or_o general_n scriptural_a rule_n &_o so_o can_v fall_v under_o the_o notion_n of_o unscriptural_a imposition_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v against_o neither_o of_o these_o rule_n if_o lawful_a than_o it_o can_v be_v imagine_v how_o their_o be_v command_v can_v make_v they_o unlawful_a so_o that_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o yield_a obedience_n and_o consequent_o no_o just_a cause_n of_o withdraw_a our_o communion_n this_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v to_o this_o first_o case_n my_o answer_n be_v this_o i_o wonder_v which_o of_o his_o dissenter_n give_v he_o ground_n to_o suppose_v that_o ever_o any_o of_o they_o take_v unscriptural_a imposition_n for_o such_o thing_n that_o be_v neither_o command_v nor_o forbid_v by_o any_o general_n or_o special_a rule_n in_o scripture_n if_o thus_o you_o care_v not_o upon_o what_o sandy_a premise_n you_o build_v your_o conclusion_n who_o can_v help_v it_o but_o i_o pray_v be_v please_v to_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o what_o we_o ourselves_o mean_v by_o unscriptural_a imposition_n they_o be_v such_o thing_n the_o religious_a use_n whereof_o be_v impose_v upon_o christian_n in_o the_o worship_n and_o service_n of_o god_n under_o the_o penalty_n of_o deprive_v minister_n of_o their_o office_n or_o the_o exercise_n thereof_o and_o of_o deprive_v both_o they_o and_o private_a christian_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o enjoy_v gospel_n ordinance_n or_o the_o privilege_n of_o a_o visible_a church_n state_n by_o the_o censure_n of_o excommunication_n which_o be_v thing_n that_o be_v not_o either_o command_v or_o direct_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n in_o any_o express_a term_n for_o we_o confess_v that_o there_o be_v not_o the_o word_n surplice_n or_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n so_o much_o as_o name_v in_o scripture_n and_o upon_o this_o account_n we_o allow_v they_o the_o name_n of_o unscriptural_a but_o we_o say_v moreover_o that_o the_o religious_a use_n of_o these_o thing_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n and_o much_o more_o the_o imposition_n of_o they_o as_o necessary_a condition_n of_o communion_n be_v against_o general_a rule_n and_o instance_n in_o the_o like_o kind_a dis-allowed_n in_o scripture_n from_o whence_o we_o by_o deduction_n gather_v the_o unlawfulnesse_n and_o sinfulness_n thereof_o and_o upon_o this_o latter_a consideration_n
