which_o we_o partake_v in_o that_o sacrament_n 1_o con._n 10.17_o we_o be_v all_o partaker_n of_o that_o one_o bread_n and_o that_o the_o cup_n of_o which_o we_o drink_v and_o thus_o believe_v we_o do_v not_o give_v divine_a worship_n unto_o the_o element_n in_o the_o sacrament_n but_o they_o in_o absolute_a contradiction_n both_o unto_o scripture_n and_o unto_o reason_n and_o unto_o four_o of_o their_o five_o sense_n believe_v that_o after_o consecration_n there_o be_v no_o bread_n but_o the_o natural_a flesh_n of_o christ_n body_n no_o wine_n but_o his_o very_a natural_a blood_n upon_o which_o account_n they_o pay_v a_o divine_a worship_n to_o they_o worship_n that_o which_o be_v not_o god_n that_o which_o be_v real_o bread_n and_o wine_n to_o all_o these_o thing_n i_o may_v now_o add_v the_o superstition_n of_o their_o devotion_n their_o prayer_n for_o deliver_v depart_v soul_n out_o of_o that_o place_n they_o call_v purgatory_n a_o place_n that_o be_v of_o their_o own_o make_n for_o gain_v wealth_n unto_o their_o church_n their_o pilgrimage_n to_o the_o tomb_n of_o saint_n a_o infinite_a mass_n of_o rite_n and_o ceremony_n for_o which_o thing_n they_o have_v no_o precept_n in_o the_o scripture_n no_o example_n either_o there_o or_o in_o the_o primitive_a age_n of_o christianity_n rite_n which_o obscure_a and_o burden_a religion_n with_o a_o numberless_a heap_n of_o superstition_n contrary_a to_o the_o very_a nature_n to_o the_o simplicity_n of_o christianity_n from_o matter_n of_o worship_n pass_v we_o on_o to_o matter_n of_o common_a life_n and_o action_n 1._o as_o it_o relate_v to_o moral_a duty_n 2._o and_o also_o unto_o civil_a society_n 1._o and_o for_o the_o former_a our_o church_n declare_v that_o true_a repentance_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o gain_v the_o remission_n and_o pardon_n of_o sin_n we_o also_o affirm_v that_o reformation_n be_v the_o best_a and_o most_o essential_a part_n of_o true_a repentance_n we_o do_v not_o pretend_v to_o any_o power_n to_o give_v absolution_n to_o any_o person_n who_o do_v not_o practice_v such_o repentance_n that_o be_v to_o say_v who_o do_v not_o true_o reform_v himself_o in_o life_n and_o action_n in_o case_n life_n be_v continue_v to_o he_o or_o in_o real_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n in_o a_o effectual_a change_n of_o heart_n we_o make_v no_o pretence_n to_o a_o authority_n of_o give_v indulgence_n and_o remission_n or_o of_o admit_v any_o penance_n and_o commutation_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n where_o the_o sin_n be_v still_o continue_a in_o whereas_o they_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n give_v absolution_n to_o attrition_n that_o be_v to_o the_o mere_a fear_n of_o hell_n and_o these_o two_o thing_n namely_o attrition_n and_o absolution_n they_o judge_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n they_o admit_v of_o penance_n and_o commutation_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o man_n sin_n and_o by_o these_o mean_n teach_v their_o follower_n to_o hope_v for_o remission_n of_o the_o punishment_n although_o they_o retain_v the_o sin_n itself_o and_o lest_o the_o penance_n shall_v seem_v burdensome_a and_o too_o severe_a they_o can_v give_v indulgence_n for_o that_o too_o to_o they_o that_o will_v be_v at_o the_o cost_n to_o buy_v it_o by_o all_o which_o mean_v they_o make_v the_o precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o law_n of_o christ_n of_o no_o effect_n make_v it_o needless_a to_o obey_v they_o unless_o a_o man_n have_v a_o mind_n unto_o it_o and_o to_o do_v more_o than_o what_o be_v needful_a 2._o for_o civil_a society_n it_o be_v well_o know_v how_o many_o there_o be_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n who_o do_v affirm_v that_o it_o be_v not_o needful_a to_o discharge_v a_o promise_n to_o a_o heretic_n and_o all_o be_v heretic_n in_o their_o account_n who_o make_v profession_n of_o christianity_n and_o do_v not_o communicate_v with_o their_o church_n we_o know_v there_o be_v safe_a conduct_n promise_v to_o john_n hus_n and_o jerom_n of_o prague_n to_o the_o council_n of_o conslance_n and_o how_o that_o promise_n be_v perform_v the_o promise_n be_v break_v and_o the_o man_n burn_v and_o so_o indeed_o they_o justify_v their_o doctrine_n by_o their_o practice_n they_o exempt_v the_o clergy_n from_o the_o authority_n of_o secular_a power_n till_o they_o be_v surrender_v thereunto_o by_o their_o superior_n in_o the_o church_n and_o they_o surrender_v they_o when_o they_o please_v and_o when_o they_o please_v they_o do_v not_o upon_o which_o account_n many_o villainy_n many_o murder_n have_v be_v commit_v in_o the_o state_n to_o the_o infinite_a scandal_n of_o religion_n it_o be_v complain_v in_o the_o six_o year_n of_o king_n henry_n the_o second_o that_o there_o have_v be_v above_o a_o hundred_o man_n slaughter_n commit_v by_o the_o then_o clergy_n since_o the_o begin_n of_o his_o reign_n but_o that_o which_o be_v of_o the_o vile_a consequence_n in_o this_o point_n be_v that_o they_o affirm_v that_o the_o pope_n of_o rome_n have_v power_n to_o depose_v king_n and_o prince_n and_o that_o pursuant_n to_o this_o doctrine_n they_o have_v excommunicate_v and_o depose_v lawful_a prince_n in_o several_a place_n and_o give_v their_o kingdom_n and_o dominion_n to_o other_o person_n that_o there_o be_v infinite_a number_n of_o author_n who_o defend_v and_o justify_v this_o doctrine_n that_o these_o be_v countenance_v by_o a_o council_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o four_o lateran_n which_o they_o themselves_o call_v a_o general_n council_n for_o it_o be_v there_o express_o say_v that_o in_o case_n a_o prince_n do_v not_o purge_v his_o country_n from_o heretical_a pravity_n in_o the_o space_n of_o a_o year_n after_o admonition_n so_o to_o do_v by_o the_o metropolitan_a and_o his_o comprovincial_o than_o this_o himself_o for_o so_o do_v for_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o case_n of_o henry_n the_o three_o of_o france_n these_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n relate_v unto_o civil_a society_n what_o we_o be_v i_o need_v not_o say_v we_o own_v ourselves_o oblige_v to_o do_v good_a to_o all_o man_n and_o that_o although_o we_o have_v not_o oblige_v ourselves_o thereto_o by_o any_o particular_a promise_n to_o they_o much_o more_o discharge_v our_o faith_n to_o all_o we_o own_o the_o king_n to_o be_v supreme_a in_o his_o own_o dominion_n and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o power_n in_o any_o to_o depose_v he_o and_o to_o conclude_v we_o own_o the_o truth_n of_o s._n peter_n word_n and_o that_o in_o the_o very_o full_a sense_n honour_n or_o as_o the_o margin_n read_v it_o esteem_v all_o man_n love_v the_o brotherhood_n fear_v god_n honour_v the_o king_n 1_o pet._n 2.17_o we_o own_o all_o to_o be_v oblige_v to_o submit_v to_o every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n whether_o it_o be_v to_o the_o king_n as_o supreme_a or_o to_o governor_n as_o send_v by_o he_o for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil_a doer_n i_o have_v here_o give_v you_o a_o account_n of_o some_o of_o the_o most_o material_a difference_n between_o we_o and_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n in_o point_n of_o faith_n and_o worship_n and_o manner_n and_o shall_v now_o persuade_v you_o to_o stand_v fast_o in_o all_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v teach_v in_o this_o church_n not_o suffer_v yourselves_o to_o be_v abase_v by_o vain_a sophistry_n of_o deceiver_n if_o they_o ask_v you_o where_o our_o church_n be_v before_o luther_n ask_v you_o again_o where_o they_o be_v before_o the_o four_o lateran_n council_n nay_o before_o that_o of_o trent_n itself_o for_o sure_a it_o be_v there_o be_v never_o any_o church_n before_o those_o council_n that_o do_v in_o all_o thing_n teach_v and_o practice_v as_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n at_o this_o present_a time_n tell_v they_o our_o church_n that_o be_v a_o church_n wherein_o the_o same_o faith_n and_o worship_n the_o same_o obedience_n to_o god_n command_n be_v teach_v and_o require_v which_o be_v now_o teach_v and_o require_v in_o we_o be_v many_o age_n before_o they_o such_o a_o church_n there_o be_v assoon_o as_o there_o be_v a_o christian_a church_n such_o a_o church_n plant_v by_o christ_n himself_o such_o a_o church_n propagate_v by_o his_o apostle_n such_o a_o church_n for_o several_a hundred_o year_n for_o several_a age_n after_o that_o afterward_o there_o arise_v a_o time_n of_o darkness_n upon_o the_o face_n of_o the_o christian_a world_n in_o that_o darkness_n many_o error_n creep_v into_o the_o church_n many_o corruption_n in_o worship_n
council_n and_o endeavour_n but_o only_o from_o the_o god_n of_o spirit_n from_o he_o that_o move_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n when_o and_o where_o and_o whither_o he_o please_v by_o strong_a though_o invisible_a operation_n and_o which_o further_o entitle_v god_n to_o our_o deliverance_n be_v that_o it_o be_v wrought_v without_o arm_n without_o war_n without_o the_o effusion_n and_o loss_n of_o blood_n in_o a_o still_o and_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a manner_n this_o show_v that_o it_o be_v from_o the_o god_n of_o peace_n this_o own_v he_o for_o its_o proper_a author_n and_o to_o he_o belong_v the_o honour_n of_o it_o to_o we_o the_o due_a and_o proper_a use_n of_o such_o a_o timely_a and_o great_a deliverance_n 2._o have_v thus_o dispatch_v the_o former_a general_n namely_o the_o acknowledgement_n make_v to_o god_n that_o it_o be_v he_o that_o settle_v kingdom_n and_o commonwealth_n proceed_v we_o now_o unto_o the_o latter_a which_o be_v the_o prayer_n put_v up_o to_o he_o strengthen_v o_o god_n what_o thou_o have_v wrought_v for_o we_o where_o we_o have_v these_o two_o thing_n suggest_v 1._o the_o necessity_n of_o god_n assistance_n for_o the_o confirmation_n and_o establishment_n of_o the_o society_n of_o mankind_n especial_o 2._o and_o second_o his_o willingness_n to_o establish_v they_o upon_o their_o due_a and_o right_a behaviour_n both_o which_o thing_n be_v plain_o grant_v by_o he_o that_o make_v this_o prayer_n for_o it_o else_o have_v the_o prayer_n itself_o be_v useless_a 1._o the_o first_o thing_n then_o that_o be_v suggest_v be_v the_o necessity_n of_o god_n assistance_n for_o the_o establishment_n and_o confirmation_n of_o the_o society_n of_o mankind_n and_o have_v we_o no_o more_o for_o the_o demonstration_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o god_n assistance_n to_o this_o purpose_n than_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o mortal_a man_n even_o this_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o all_o the_o affair_n of_o mankind_n depend_v upon_o the_o action_n of_o man_n their_o action_n depend_v upon_o their_o counsel_n and_o their_o counsel_n general_o upon_o their_o passion_n and_o these_o upon_o so_o many_o accident_n so_o many_o little_a uncertain_a cause_n so_o numerous_a so_o various_a thing_n that_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o every_o day_n produce_v so_o many_o alteration_n the_o wonder_n be_v that_o the_o great_a thing_n that_o depend_v upon_o such_o uncertain_a cause_n the_o great_a kingdom_n and_o commonwealth_n have_v not_o more_o and_o quick_a revolution_n great_a and_o more_o sudden_a change_n than_o what_o we_o general_o find_v have_v be_v the_o strength_n and_o settlement_n of_o every_o government_n of_o every_o kingdom_n and_o commonwealth_n depend_v not_o only_o upon_o the_o close_a and_o entire_a union_n of_o the_o member_n of_o the_o fame_n society_n among_o themselves_o a_o thing_n not_o easy_a to_o be_v have_v but_o upon_o all_o the_o several_a cause_n that_o keep_v the_o balance_n even_o and_o steady_a between_o the_o neighbour_a nation_n also_o which_o cause_n be_v so_o very_o numerous_a and_o so_o various_a mutable_a and_o uncertain_a that_o the_o balance_n will_v daily_o change_v and_o vary_v do_v not_o god_n himself_o hold_v the_o scale_n and_o keep_v thing_n even_o by_o his_o own_o power_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o give_v a_o account_n of_o all_o the_o cause_n that_o may_v produce_v strange_a alteration_n in_o the_o society_n of_o mankind_n unless_o providence_n shall_v interpose_v for_o their_o continuance_n and_o preservation_n a_o sudden_a fire_n may_v break_v out_o in_o a_o capital_a city_n and_o present_o consume_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o wealth_n and_o treasure_n of_o a_o nation_n a_o tempest_n or_o violent_a inundation_n a_o earthquake_n or_o thunder_n from_o above_o may_v have_v the_o very_a same_o effect_n a_o general_a plague_n may_v sweep_v away_o such_o vast_a multitude_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n as_o that_o the_o rest_n may_v be_v expose_v to_o the_o invasion_n of_o their_o neighbour_n this_o give_v sparta_n a_o great_a advantage_n against_o athens_n the_o dulness_n and_o idleness_n of_o one_o country_n may_v give_v opportunity_n to_o another_o to_o overgrow_v it_o in_o wealth_n and_o power_n and_o so_o to_o conquer_v and_o enslave_v it_o the_o vice_n and_o luxury_n of_o a_o people_n may_v soon_o consume_v their_o own_o strength_n and_o bring_v the_o same_o distress_n and_o difficulty_n upon_o a_o country_n that_o they_o usual_o bring_v on_o a_o single_a family_n ease_n and_o plenty_n and_o wealth_n itself_o may_v first_o occasion_n disuse_n of_o arm_n and_o then_o infect_v a_o whole_a nation_n with_o a_o general_a softness_n and_o effeminacy_n and_o so_o expose_v it_o to_o the_o usurpation_n of_o a_o hardy_a and_o more_o needy_a people_n thus_o fall_v the_o persian_n before_o the_o greek_n the_o death_n of_o a_o prince_n or_o a_o great_a man_n may_v prove_v destructive_a to_o a_o people_n when_o epaminondas_n the_o theban_a fall_v thebes_n itself_o fall_v with_o he_o be_v never_o prosperous_a before_o nor_o after_o he_o add_v hereunto_o what_o violent_a change_n and_o alteration_n domestic_a sedition_n may_v produce_v in_o every_o nation_n and_o how_o many_o cause_n and_o little_a accident_n may_v easy_o produce_v such_o sedition_n the_o error_n and_o mistake_n of_o magistrate_n the_o natural_a inconstancy_n of_o the_o people_n the_o ambition_n of_o man_n of_o wit_n and_o part_n or_o such_o as_o fancy_n themselves_o to_o be_v so_o their_o mutual_a enmity_n among_o themselves_o their_o envy_n at_o each_o other_o greatness_n their_o infinite_a rage_n and_o indignation_n when_o they_o fail_v of_o what_o they_o aspire_v after_o these_o with_o infinite_a other_o cause_n which_o be_v impossible_a to_o be_v number_v do_v as_o natural_o tend_v to_o the_o dissolution_n of_o public_a body_n of_o civil_a government_n and_o society_n as_o all_o the_o disease_n and_o fatal_a accident_n to_o which_o man_n body_n be_v obnoxious_a both_o from_o within_o and_o without_o also_o to_o the_o destruction_n of_o his_o body_n now_o to_o what_o end_n be_v this_o discourse_n to_o show_v the_o need_n that_o all_o the_o concernment_n of_o mankind_n that_o the_o great_a state_n and_o kingdom_n have_v of_o support_n from_o divine_a providence_n be_v not_o only_o so_o inclinable_a to_o crumble_v to_o piece_n of_o themselves_o by_o the_o disease_n that_o be_v within_o they_o but_o likewise_o so_o obnoxious_a too_o to_o be_v dash_v to_o piece_n each_o by_o other_o and_o if_o the_o very_a civil_a society_n of_o mankind_n need_v the_o assistance_n of_o god_n providence_n for_o their_o continuance_n how_o much_o more_o do_v religion_n want_v it_o religion_n if_o true_a be_v a_o ray_n from_o god_n and_o depend_v as_o much_o upon_o his_o influence_n as_o the_o beam_n depend_v upon_o the_o sun_n and_o be_v plant_v in_o we_o man_n must_v needs_o partake_v of_o our_o infirmity_n and_o therefore_o be_v apt_a even_o of_o itself_o like_o other_o establishment_n and_o constitution_n to_o vary_v from_o primitive_a institution_n and_o lose_v its_o original_a strength_n and_o purity_n so_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o christianity_n which_o in_o the_o first_o and_o primitive_a age_n maintain_v itself_o against_o all_o the_o cruelty_n of_o persecution_n by_o the_o zeal_n and_o piety_n of_o its_o follower_n afterward_o suffer_v strange_a decay_n first_o by_o infinite_a swarm_n of_o heresy_n and_o then_o by_o ignorance_n and_o superstition_n which_o now_o be_v reel_v to_o the_o other_o extreme_a namely_o to_o atheism_n and_o infidelity_n and_o to_o the_o contempt_n of_o all_o religion_n nor_o need_v we_o wonder_v it_o shall_v be_v difficult_a to_o preserve_v so_o wise_a and_o holy_a a_o religion_n as_o that_o which_o christ_n have_v reveal_v to_o we_o in_o its_o original_a strength_n and_o purity_n for_o it_o have_v strong_a and_o numerous_a enemy_n every_o man_n lust_n be_v at_o enmity_n with_o it_o every_o man_n vanity_n apt_a to_o corrupt_v it_o every_o man_n ignorance_n apt_a to_o mistake_v it_o nay_o the_o very_a religion_n of_o some_o person_n their_o pride_n and_o pretence_n to_o inspiration_n the_o great_a enemy_n to_o this_o religion_n beside_o all_o this_o there_o be_v several_a accident_n that_o may_v have_v dangerous_a effect_n upon_o it_o according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o time_n and_o place_n if_o the_o minister_n of_o it_o be_v poor_a and_o mean_a this_o general_o bring_v contempt_n on_o they_o and_o upon_o religion_n for_o their_o sake_n if_o they_o be_v rich_a this_o create_v envy_n and_o then_o sacrilege_n be_v reformation_n if_o a_o national_a church_n be_v guard_v and_o settle_v by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o state_n dissenter_n complain_v of_o perfection_n and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o guard_v it_o be_v impossible_a it_o shall_v be_v national_a that_o be_v that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o approve_v itself_o to_o a_o infinite_a difference_n of_o
apprehension_n if_o a_o church_n be_v settle_v by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o state_n and_o those_o not_o put_v in_o execution_n opposer_n have_v a_o double_a advantage_n the_o law_n of_o the_o state_n be_v against_o they_o give_v they_o all_o the_o advantage_n of_o be_v think_v to_o suffer_v persecution_n the_o not_o execute_v those_o law_n give_v they_o all_o the_o advantage_n of_o toleration_n and_o true_o they_o have_v great_a advantage_n that_o have_v both_o these_o put_v together_o that_o of_o a_o seem_a persecution_n and_o that_o of_o a_o real_a toleration_n to_o these_o i_o may_v add_v
