befall_v they_o they_o take_v on_o as_o if_o the_o church_n do_v stand_v or_o fall_v with_o they_o self-interest_n be_v their_o measure_n by_o which_o they_o judge_v of_o time_n and_o thing_n 11._o observe_v also_o how_o eager_o man_n be_v set_v to_o have_v their_o own_o will_n take_v place_n in_o public_a business_n and_o to_o have_v their_o own_o opinion_n to_o be_v the_o rule_n for_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o then_o judge_v by_o this_o of_o their_o self-denial_n be_v not_o self_n predominant_a there_o will_v not_o be_v such_o strive_v who_o shall_v rule_v and_o who_o will_n shall_v be_v the_o law_n but_o man_n will_v think_v that_o other_o be_v as_o likely_a to_o rule_v with_o prudence_n and_o honesty_n as_o they_o how_o eager_a be_v the_o papist_n to_o have_v his_o way_n by_o a_o universal_a monarch_n how_o eager_a be_v other_o for_o one_o ecclesiastical_a national_a head_n how_o eager_a be_v the_o popular_a party_n for_o their_o way_n as_o if_o the_o welfare_n of_o all_o do_v lie_v in_o their_o several_a mode_n of_o government_n and_o so_o confident_o do_v the_o libertine_n speak_v for_o they_o that_o they_o begin_v now_o to_o make_v motion_n that_o our_o parliament-man_n shall_v be_v hang_v or_o behead_v as_o traitor_n if_o any_o shall_v make_v a_o motion_n in_o a_o free_a parliament_n against_o the_o general_n liberty_n which_o they_o desire_v keep_v peace_n as_o in_o family_n and_o neighbourhood_n so_o in_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o judge_v by_o this_o of_o man_n self-denial_n husband_n and_o wife_n brother_n and_o sister_n master_n and_o servant_n live_v at_o variance_n and_o all_o through_o the_o conflict_n that_o arise_v between_o their_o contrary_a self-interest_n if_o a_o beast_n do_v but_o trespass_v on_o a_o neighbour_n ground_n if_o they_o be_v but_o assess_v for_o the_o state_n or_o poor_a above_o their_o expectation_n if_o in_o any_o way_n of_o trade_v their_o commodity_n be_v cross_v you_o shall_v quick_o see_v where_o self_n bear_v rule_n this_o make_v it_o so_o difficult_a a_o work_n to_o keep_v the_o church_n from_o division_n few_o man_n be_v sensible_a of_o the_o universal_a interest_n because_o they_o be_v captivate_v to_o their_o own_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o man_n fear_v not_o to_o make_v party_n and_o division_n in_o the_o church_n and_o will_v tear_v it_o in_o piece_n to_o satisfy_v their_o interest_n or_o selfish_a zeal_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o party_n be_v so_o much_o multiply_v and_o keep_v up_o the_o buckler_n against_o other_o because_o that_o selfishness_n make_v all_o partial_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o people_n fall_v off_o from_o their_o pastor_n or_o else_o fall_v out_o with_o they_o when_o they_o be_v cross_v in_o their_o opinion_n reprove_v for_o their_o sin_n or_o call_v to_o confess_v or_o make_v restitution_n and_o perhaps_o that_o they_o may_v sacrilegious_o desraud_v the_o church_n of_o tithe_n or_o other_o payment_n that_o be_v due_a hence_o it_o be_v also_o that_o member_n so_o oft_o fall_v out_o with_o one_o another_o for_o foul_a word_n or_o difference_n of_o judgement_n or_o some_o point_n or_o other_o of_o self-interest_n nay_o sometime_o about_o their_o very_a seat_n in_o the_o place_n of_o worship_n while_o every_o man_n be_v for_o himself_o the_o minister_n can_v hardly_o keep_v they_o in_o charity_n and_o peace_n and_o be_v any_o of_o this_o agreeable_a to_o our_o holy_a rule_n and_o pattern_n no_o man_n can_v think_v so_o that_o have_v read_v the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o be_v so_o blind_v by_o selfishness_n as_o not_o to_o understand_v what_o make_v against_o it_o and_o here_o beside_o what_o be_v largely_o speak_v after_o let_v i_o tell_v of_o a_o few_o of_o the_o evil_n of_o this_o sin_n and_o the_o contrary_a benefit_n of_o self-denial_n 1._o the_o power_n of_o selfishness_n keep_v man_n stranger_n to_o themselves_o they_o know_v not_o their_o original_a nor_o actual_a sin_n carnal_a mind_n than_o it_o be_v but_o sinful_a sensuality_n or_o vanity_n many_o person_n have_v no_o such_o delight_n to_o read_v the_o useful_a history_n of_o church-affair_n as_o they_o have_v to_o read_v the_o curious_o pen_v though_o less_o useful_a history_n of_o other_o matter_n though_o i_o know_v that_o the_o history_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v very_o serviceable_a to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o divine_a thing_n yet_o they_o that_o use_v it_o to_o holy_a end_n will_v make_v choice_n according_o and_o be_v no_o more_o in_o it_o than_o may_v suit_v with_o those_o end_n it_o be_v the_o most_o humane_a with_o the_o most_o light_a ridiculous_a passage_n that_o be_v most_o please_v to_o vain_a unsanctified_a wit_n but_o the_o godly_a delight_n in_o it_o so_o far_o as_o it_o that_o be_v there_o spend_v their_o time_n in_o nothing_o else_o but_o either_o to_o tell_v or_o to_o hear_v some_o new_a thing_n yea_o novelty_n of_o doctrine_n and_o religion_n and_o teacher_n be_v a_o snare_n and_o bait_n to_o carnal_a fancy_n which_o many_o be_v take_v by_o that_o be_v forsake_v of_o god_n have_v first_o forsake_v he_o and_o prove_v false_a to_o the_o truth_n receive_v chap._n xxxii_o unnecessary_a knowledge_n and_o deligh_n therein_o 15._o another_o part_n of_o carnal_a pleasure_n which_o self_n must_v be_v deny_v in_o be_v a_o desire_n after_o unnecessary_a knowledge_n
