i_o shall_v therefore_o first_o of_o all_o set_v down_o what_o by_o compare_v the_o several_a part_n of_o your_o letter_n together_o i_o take_v to_o be_v your_o notion_n which_o when_o i_o have_v state_v and_o consider_v i_o shall_v reflect_v upon_o some_o single_a passage_n in_o your_o letter_n that_o relate_v to_o it_o and_o in_o this_o you_o have_v the_o model_n of_o the_o answer_n that_o i_o intend_v to_o begin_v then_o with_o a_o account_n of_o your_o notion_n you_o distinguish_v of_o two_o sort_n of_o pain_n that_o which_o be_v sensible_a or_o bodily_a and_o that_o which_o be_v mental_a by_o sensible_a pain_n mean_v that_o which_o be_v in_o the_o inferior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n that_o which_o be_v exercise_v about_o object_n of_o sense_n and_o by_o mental_a pain_n that_o which_o affect_v the_o superior_a and_o intellectual_a part._n now_o as_o for_o mental_a pain_n that_o you_o allow_v to_o be_v a_o evil_a and_o the_o only_a proper_a evil_a of_o man_n but_o than_o you_o say_v god_n be_v not_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o and_o as_o for_o sensible_a or_o bodily_a pain_n that_o you_o allow_v god_n to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o but_o than_o you_o say_v that_o be_v not_o true_o and_o real_o a_o evil_a as_o not_o affect_v what_o be_v proper_o the_o man._n and_o therefore_o though_o god_n be_v the_o true_a cause_n of_o pian_n as_o well_o as_o pleasure_n yet_o since_o the_o pain_n which_o he_o cause_v be_v not_o of_o the_o first_o sort_n viz._n mental_a pain_n which_o be_v a_o evil_a but_o of_o the_o second_o sort_n viz._n sensible_a pain_n which_o be_v not_o the_o proper_a evil_n of_o the_o man_n this_o aught_o to_o be_v no_o bar_n to_o our_o love_n of_o he_o much_o less_o a_o reason_n of_o make_v he_o the_o object_n of_o our_o aversion_n this_o i_o think_v be_v in_o short_a your_o true_a system_n which_o lie_v thus_o in_o a_o regular_a and_o compendious_a draught_n may_v be_v the_o more_o distinct_o consider_v which_o be_v the_o advantage_n i_o aim_v at_o by_o cast_v it_o into_o this_o form_n my_o first_o remark_n upon_o this_o be_v that_o your_o distinction_n of_o sensible_a and_o mental_a pain_n in_o the_o general_n be_v right_a and_o found_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n for_o certain_o the_o idea_n of_o joy_n and_o sensible_a pleasure_n grief_n and_o bodily_a pain_n be_v very_o distinct_a some_o i_o know_v that_o pretend_v to_o philosophy_n confound_v these_o make_v that_o pleasure_n or_o pain_n suppose_v which_o a_o man_n feel_v upon_o his_o draw_v near_o the_o fire_n to_o be_v all_o one_o with_o joy_n or_o grief_n the_o soul_n know_v say_v they_o or_o feel_v that_o the_o body_n which_o she_o love_v be_v well_o or_o ill_o dispose_v that_o there_o happen_v some_o good_a or_o ill_a to_o its_o mechanical_a frame_n either_o rejoice_v or_o be_v grieve_v at_o it_o the_o one_o be_v our_o pain_n the_o other_o our_o pleasure_n but_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v gross_a philosophy_n though_o the_o author_n of_o it_o think_v it_o fine_a it_o be_v true_a indeed_o that_o as_o often_o as_o the_o sentiment_n of_o pleasure_n or_o pain_n do_v give_v we_o notice_n that_o our_o body_n be_v well_o or_o ill_o dispose_v we_o be_v affect_v with_o joy_n or_o grief_n but_o a_o little_a reflection_n may_v help_v we_o to_o perceive_v that_o this_o joy_n and_o grief_n that_o be_v the_o consequence_n of_o our_o know_v how_o it_o be_v with_o the_o state_n of_o our_o body_n differ_v exceed_o from_o those_o antecedent_n pain_n and_o pleasure_n whence_o the_o information_n be_v receive_v for_o these_o prevent_v our_o reason_n whereas_o the_o other_o follow_v upon_o it_o pain_n anticipate_v all_o thought_n or_o reflection_n but_o grief_n suppose_v it_o and_o be_v ground_v upon_o it_o i_o grieve_v because_o i_o know_v myself_o to_o be_v in_o pain_n or_o because_o i_o expect_v or_o fear_v it_o whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o my_o grief_n and_o my_o pain_n be_v not_o one_o and_o the_o same_o but_o two_o very_a different_a and_o distinct_a sentiment_n i_o therefore_o allow_v your_o distinction_n though_o i_o be_o not_o so_o well_o satisfy_v with_o the_o ground_n of_o it_o you_o ground_n your_o distinction_n of_o mental_a and_o sensible_a pain_n upon_o a_o double_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o superior_a and_o the_o inferior_a the_o distinction_n be_v authorise_v by_o custom_n and_o what_o be_v more_o by_o you_o but_o i_o must_v own_o to_o you_o sincere_o that_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o i_o have_v hear_v much_o talk_n of_o this_o superior_a and_o inferior_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o have_v think_v much_o about_o it_o but_o can_v for_o my_o life_n form_n to_o myself_o a_o clear_a idea_n of_o any_o such_o part_n for_o beside_o that_o i_o think_v the_o soul_n have_v no_o part_n at_o all_o if_o it_o have_v sure_o they_o be_v not_o such_o dissimular_a and_o heterogeneous_a part_n as_o superior_a and_o inferior_a intellectual_a and_o sensitive_a the_o soul_n i_o take_v to_o be_v a_o entire_a simple_a uniform_a essence_n intellectual_a throughout_o without_o any_o part_n at_o all_o much_o less_o such_o heterogeneous_a part_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o need_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v any_o such_o for_o the_o establishment_n of_o the_o present_a distinction_n the_o distinction_n of_o sentiment_n do_v not_o need_v distinction_n of_o part_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o same_o essence_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v various_o modify_v may_v be_v various_o affect_v and_o
