not_o and_o this_o be_v the_o most_o natural_a and_o noble_a regiment_n of_o the_o will_n over_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n 2._o though_o it_o may_v fall_v out_o that_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n may_v appetere_fw-la bonum_fw-la sensibile_fw-la yet_o the_o will_n may_v and_o do_v control_v the_o empire_n of_o the_o appetite_n in_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o appetition_n as_o for_o instance_n a_o man_n see_v delicious_a fruit_n and_o he_o desire_v it_o in_o so_o much_o that_o be_v there_o not_o a_o control_n over_o the_o empire_n of_o his_o appetite_n it_o will_v command_v the_o hand_n to_o reach_v it_o and_o the_o mouth_n to_o eat_v it_o but_o the_o contrary_a command_n of_o the_o will_n supersede_v the_o command_n of_o the_o appetite_n the_o appetite_n desire_v it_o but_o the_o hand_n be_v forbid_v by_o the_o will_v to_o reach_v it_o now_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v say_v this_o contradiction_n appear_v not_o only_o in_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n but_o even_o in_o the_o sensible_a the_o sensible_a appetite_n be_v check_v in_o its_o execution_n oftentimes_o by_o sensual_a fear_n as_o in_o dog_n and_o horse_n and_o other_o brute_n yea_o sometime_o by_o the_o remembrance_n of_o a_o former_a suffering_n for_o the_o like_a attempt_n to_o gratify_v his_o sensual_a appetite_n and_o yet_o they_o be_v destitute_a of_o any_o superior_a faculty_n of_o will_n to_o interpose_v a_o prohibition_n upon_o the_o appetite_n i_o answer_v this_o be_v true_a for_o in_o such_o case_n the_o impendent_a fear_n be_v either_o present_a or_o in_o memory_n and_o so_o expect_v and_o it_o be_v of_o a_o sensible_a evil_n have_v the_o same_o influence_n upon_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n as_o the_o present_a good_a and_o therefore_o if_o the_o evil_n fear_v or_o impendent_a be_v a_o great_a sensible_a evil_n than_o the_o good_a it_o overrule_v the_o appetite_n to_o aversation_n as_o the_o fish_n that_o love_v the_o bait_n yet_o fear_v the_o hook_n which_o it_o discern_v as_o a_o great_a sensible_a evil_n the_o very_a appetite_n be_v thereby_o determine_v to_o aversation_n but_o the_o control_n of_o the_o will_n upon_o the_o appetite_n in_o the_o reasonable_a nature_n the_o divine_a existence_n be_v no_o less_o infinite_a ten_o thousand_o year_n since_o than_o it_o be_v now_o because_o the_o duration_n of_o ten_o thousand_o year_n be_v but_o finite_a and_o therefore_o though_o take_v out_o of_o a_o infinite_a duration_n leave_v still_o the_o duration_n infinite_a for_o finite_a take_v out_o of_o infinite_a leave_v still_o that_o which_o remain_v infinite_a beside_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o glorious_a god_n be_v the_o duration_n of_o such_o a_o be_v as_o be_v indivisible_a and_o as_o he_o have_v no_o divisibility_n in_o himself_o so_o from_o one_o another_o but_o one_o incomprehensible_a god_n bless_v for_o ever_o though_o under_o a_o personal_a distinction_n this_o therefore_o be_v the_o true_a state_n of_o the_o matter_n the_o reason_n herein_o give_v do_v not_o at_o all_o infirm_a the_o important_a reason_n against_o the_o eternity_n of_o mankind_n because_o necessary_o there_o will_v upon_o such_o a_o supposition_n addition_n in_o that_o part_n in_o which_o it_o be_v finite_a yet_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o it_o shall_v have_v any_o thing_n before_o it_o in_o that_o extreme_a wherein_o it_o be_v infinity_o and_o eternity_n consist_v this_o be_v the_o chief_a stress_n of_o the_o former_a debate_n which_o be_v no_o way_n impugn_a by_o the_o instance_n here_o give_v for_o the_o glorious_a god_n and_o his_o eternal_a existence_n be_v such_o that_o it_o have_v not_o can_v have_v any_o thing_n antecedent_n to_o it_o neither_o be_v it_o measure_v by_o successive_a part_n but_o be_v simple_o eternal_a infinite_a before_o all_o thing_n without_o beginning_n of_o be_v or_o duration_n as_o well_o as_o without_o end_n and_o such_o a_o duration_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o suppose_v any_o thing_n before_o it_o or_o any_o thing_n equal_o ancient_a to_o it_o but_o ever_o be_v and_o ever_o have_v be_v or_o existence_n that_o be_v eternal_o and_o immutable_o the_o same_o what_o once_o he_o be_v he_o ever_o be_v still_o be_v and_o ever_o shall_v be_v 5._o a_o five_o objection_n be_v this_o that_o because_o we_o have_v former_o suppose_v that_o nothing_o can_v possible_o be_v eternal_a and_o together_o with_o it_o have_v variety_n of_o operation_n the_o glorious_a eternal_a god_n have_v variety_n of_o operation_n in_o all_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n and_o providence_n his_o emanant_fw-la action_n and_o also_o in_o the_o counsel_n and_o determination_n of_o his_o will_n his_o immanent_a action_n and_o therefore_o the_o position_n seem_v to_o be_v derogatory_n to_o the_o eternity_n of_o almighty_a god_n i_o have_v not_o insert_v this_o objection_n but_o for_o the_o full_a vindication_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o to_o show_v that_o it_o no_o way_n in_o the_o least_o imaginable_a degree_n derogate_v from_o the_o truth_n concern_v god_n i_o therefore_o answer_v that_o when_o we_o be_v speak_v of_o alteration_n or_o change_n it_o may_v reasonable_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v one_o of_o these_o kind_n 1._o a_o alteration_n that_o with_o it_o carry_v a_o change_n of_o the_o nature_n or_o essence_n of_o a_o thing_n and_o thus_o in_o a_o large_a sense_n generation_n or_o corruption_n or_o the_o essential_a change_n of_o any_o thing_n or_o be_v into_o another_o thing_n thus_o corporeal_a matter_n under_o any_o determinate_a form_n be_v changeable_a and_o such_o a_o mutability_n be_v impossible_a to_o be_v consistent_a with_o eternity_n and_o it_o be_v thus_o impossible_a for_o the_o glorious_a god_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o any_o change_n for_o he_o necessary_o and_o therefore_o eternal_o exist_v and_o must_v ever_o exist_v 2._o a_o alteration_n of_o state_n or_o condition_n of_o any_o be_v which_o yet_o as_o to_o its_o essential_a condition_n persist_v as_o before_o thus_o body_n be_v every_o moment_n change_v sometime_o in_o quality_n as_o from_o hot_a to_o cold_a sometime_o in_o figure_n sometime_o in_o dimension_n as_o the_o motion_n of_o augmentation_n and_o diminution_n a_o child_n grow_v unto_o the_o stature_n of_o a_o youth_n and_o then_o of_o a_o man_n and_o such_o being_n as_o these_o can_v sustain_v a_o eternal_a duration_n immutable_o the_o same_o 3._o a_o change_n of_o the_o internal_a and_o immanent_a act_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n in_o a_o be_v endue_v therewith_o as_o to_o know_v that_o which_o before_o it_o know_v not_o to_o will_v purpose_n or_o determine_v what_o before_o it_o will_v not_o or_o purpose_v not_o the_o schoolman_n be_v indeed_o many_o of_o they_o a_o generation_n of_o man_n
