A85043 The churches and ministery of England, true churches and true ministery. Cleared, and proved, in a sermon / preach'd the 4th of May at Wiviliscombe; before a numerous congregation assembled together to hear the opposition, which had been long threatned to be made that day, by Mr Collier and others of his party, who, with the greatest strength the West would afford them, were present at the sermon. Wherein were these five things undeniably proved: 1. That a mixture of prophane and scandalous persons with reall saints, is not inconsistent with the Church of God or a true church. ... 5. And then, they also must needs be guilty, who forsake true churches and a lawfull ministry, to follow and hear unsent preachers. By Francis Fullwood minister of the Gospel at Staple Fitzpane in the county of Somerset. Before it there is an epistle and preface, shewing the manner, and a narrative subjoyned shewing the substance of the dispute after the sermon, (both which lasted nine hours.) Set forth by the ministers that were at the dispute, and attested under their hands. if_o they_o have_v say_v by_o what_o authority_n do_v or_o may_v we_o preach_v why_o do_v not_o doubt_v say_v christ_n my_o father_n send_v i_o and_o in_o his_o send_v i_o he_o give_v i_o authority_n to_o send_v other_o as_o he_o send_v i_o so_o i_o say_v or_o by_o that_o i_o have_v power_n to_o send_v you_o and_o give_v you_o power_n to_o send_v other_o he_o send_v i_o to_o preach_v and_o ordain_v i_o send_v you_o to_o preach_v and_o ordain_v and_o do_v you_o send_v other_o to_o preach_v and_o ordain_v etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o find_v the_o apostle_n execute_v their_o commission_n according_o along_o as_o occasion_n require_v paul_n send_v timothy_n titus_n etc._n etc._n bid_v they_o ordain_v and_o so_o successive_o to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n which_o thing_n be_v most_o plain_a in_o the_o text_n we_o be_v upon_o with_o regard_n to_o the_o person_n ordain_v and_o ordain_v person_n ordain_v be_v prophet_n and_o teacher_n and_o person_n ordain_v in_o this_o ordinary_a send_v what_o power_n receive_v they_o they_o be_v send_v it_o be_v most_o apparent_a by_o a_o ordinary_a send_n and_o what_o to_o do_v i_o pray_v you_o why_o to_o preach_v for_o 5._o and_o to_o ordain_v elder_n in_o every_o church_n c._n 13._o 23._o clear_o intimate_v that_o minister_n by_o their_o very_a ordination_n have_v power_n to_o ordain_v as_o well_o as_o to_o preach_v 4._o if_o a_o presbytery_n have_v power_n to_o ordain_v then_o ordinary_a minister_n have_v power_n to_o ordain_v for_o a_o presbytery_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o colledge-combination_n or_o company_n of_o presbyter_n or_o ordinary_a minister_n but_o a_o presbytery_n have_v power_n to_o ordain_v for_o timothy_n be_v ordain_v by_o the_o lay_n on_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o presbytery_n object_n but_o there_o be_v apostle_n in_o these_o presbytery_n answ_n what_o if_o this_o strengthen_v the_o argument_n if_o right_o consider_v for_o if_o it_o be_v count_v a_o act_n of_o the_o presbytery_n when_o apostle_n be_v there_o it_o appear_v that_o the_o apostle_n join_v with_o ordinary_a elder_n act_v as_o elder_n and_o not_o as_o apostle_n or_o extraordinary_a officer_n there_o be_v apostle_n in_o the_o presbytery_n that_o do_v ordain_v and_o yet_o ordination_n be_v say_v to_o be_v do_v by_o the_o presbytery_n clear_o show_v that_o ordination_n be_v a_o proper_a act_n of_o a_o ordinary_a presbytery_n and_o not_o of_o apostle_n as_o so_o and_o to_o make_v it_o out_o of_o doubt_n ordination_n be_v define_v in_o that_o text_n to_o be_v the_o lay_v on_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o presbytery_n but_o this_o hand_n i_o to_o another_o argument_n 5._o if_o ordinary_a officer_n have_v a_o hand_n in_o ordination_n in_o apostle_n time_n much_o more_o and_o safe_a may_v they_o ordain_v now_o there_o be_v no_o extraordinary_a officer_n among_o we_o the_o minor_a imply_v be_v already_o prove_v and_o for_o the_o consequence_n i_o say_v much_o more_o but_o how_o so_o why_o because_o à_fw-la pari_fw-la the_o people_n where_o there_o be_v no_o minister_n to_o do_v their_o work_n have_v power_n to_o ordain_v by_o the_o warrant_n of_o necessity_n then_o much_o more_o ordinary_a minister_n may_v now_o there_o be_v none_o extraordinary_a leave_v if_o they_o as_o so_o have_v a_o hand_n in_o ordination_n by_o the_o like_a warrant_n and_o law_n of_o necessity_n and_o now_o that_o that_o confirm_v i_o about_o all_o doubt_v touch_v the_o ordination_n of_o ordinary_a officer_n be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o primitive_a church_n next_o the_o apostle_n and_o so_o down_o along_o through_o all_o age_n and_o church_n to_o this_o day_n without_o interruption_n or_o contradiction_n unless_o by_o a_o few_o inconsiderable_a man_n as_o the_o seeker_n be_v thus_o we_o have_v show_v what_o gospel_n ordination_n be_v and_o in_o conclusion_n conclusion_n who_o hand_n the_o power_n of_o ordain_v lie_v it_o be_v a_o set_a man_n apart_o with_o fast_v and_o prayer_n and_o lay_v on_o of_o hand_n by_o preach_v elder_n which_o be_v indeed_o in_o every_o jot_n and_o title_n of_o it_o the_o very_a same_o with_o the_o ordination_n allow_v and_o practise_v in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n time_n out_o of_o mind_n the_o additional_a ceremony_n and_o harsh_a oath_n be_v take_v away_o and_o we_o now_o have_v nothing_o leave_v but_o pure_a ordination_n according_a to_o the_o word_n so_o that_o the_o word_n do_v allow_v we_o lawful_a minister_n because_o we_o have_v what_o the_o word_n require_v to_o make_v we_o so_o obj._n to_o say_v we_o be_v ordain_v by_o bishop_n be_v not_o worth_a the_o while_n for_o still_o there_o be_v ordinary_a presbyter_n join_v with_o they_o and_o they_o themselves_o be_v no_o more_o but_o ordinary_a presbyter_n though_o they_o think_v themselves_o more_o their_o thought_n can_v not_o add_v one_o cubit_n to_o their_o stature_n who_o neither_o church_n nor_o state_n do_v ever_o declare_v to_o be_v a_o superior_a order_n to_o other_o presbyter_n but_o for_o this_o i_o refer_v you_o to_o mr_n seaman_n who_o have_v give_v five_o answer_n to_o this_o very_a objection_n every_o one_o of_o which_o be_v so_o sound_a and_o solid_a that_o they_o be_v single_a and_o apart_o from_o each_o other_o abundant_o satisfy_v see_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d p._n 85._o object_n but_o the_o great_a objection_n yet_o remain_v viz._n that_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v antichristian_a because_o by_o a_o line_n of_o succession_n we_o descend_v from_o antichrist_n this_o indeed_o be_v all_o they_o have_v to_o say_v against_o our_o ministry_n answ_n there_o be_v two_o knot_n in_o the_o line_n of_o succession_n of_o the_o gospel-ministery_n to_o our_o time_n the_o first_o be_v as_o it_o pass_v the_o bound_n of_o the_o apostle_n day_n and_o this_o the_o seeker_n tie_v but_o we_o have_v already_o dissolve_v it_o the_o other_o be_v in_o the_o passage_n of_o it_o from_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o the_o reform_a church_n as_o it_o lie_v in_o this_o objection_n ordination_n four_o argument_n to_o clear_v the_o succession_n of_o ordination_n make_v by_o brownist_n anabaptist_n etc._n etc._n which_o i_o shall_v now_o untie_v i_o shall_v touch_v but_o four_o argument_n for_o i_o be_o in_o haste_n every_o of_o which_o experience_n have_v prove_v very_o effectual_a 1._o i_o judge_v it_o a_o truth_n not_o to_o be_v question_v that_o there_o have_v be_v certain_a minister_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o world_n ever_o since_o there_o be_v any_o and_o more_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o there_o be_v true_a minister_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n when_o our_o first_o reformer_n begin_v to_o think_v of_o break_v off_o from_o she_o for_o there_o be_v conversion_n there_o else_o god_n will_v not_o have_v have_v a_o people_n there_o and_o conversion_n be_v the_o work_n of_o send_v minister_n rom._n 10._o 14_o 15._o now_o can_v any_o man_n in_o reason_n think_v that_o those_o that_o forsake_v both_o rome_n and_o her_o harlotry_n and_o obey_v that_o know_a command_n of_o god_n and_o come_v out_o from_o rome_n be_v not_o the_o best_a of_o the_o minister_n there_o and_o so_o by_o consequence_n the_o minister_n of_o christ_n if_o there_o be_v any_o which_o may_v not_o be_v doubt_v yea_o therefore_o remarkable_a providence_n do_v seal_v to_o their_o ministry_n immediate_o upon_o their_o leave_v rome_n be_v use_v by_o god_n to_o preach_v that_o doctrine_n and_o press_v that_o command_n come_v out_o of_o she_o my_o people_n and_o to_o prevail_v with_o a_o great_a number_n to_o follow_v their_o step_n and_o leave_v the_o whore_n and_o when_o god_n by_o they_o have_v draw_v his_o people_n into_o the_o wilderness_n he_o do_v feed_v they_o there_o by_o the_o same_o pastor_n rev._n 12._o 6_o and_o 14._o which_o help_v i_o to_o conclude_v that_o as_o the_o best_a of_o the_o member_n leave_v rome_n be_v own_v by_o god_n for_o the_o true_a church_n so_o the_o first_o of_o the_o minister_n leave_v rome_n be_v acknowledge_v by_o god_n for_o the_o true_a ministry_n every_o man_n abide_v in_o that_o call_n wherein_o he_o be_v call_v whether_o member_n or_o minister_n 2._o again_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o question_v but_o that_o our_o first_o reformer_n have_v a_o inward_a call_n and_o if_o their_o outward_a call_n be_v question_v it_o be_v no_o great_a matter_n since_o both_o we_o and_o our_o adversary_n agree_v in_o this_o that_o in_o such_o a_o strait_a and_o a_o case_n so_o extraordinary_a as_o that_o be_v the_o people_n be_v bind_v to_o choose_v and_o call_v a_o minister_n and_o they_o be_v valid_a no_o man_n doubt_n in_o such_o a_o case_n and_o therefore_o the_o call_v of_o our_o first_o reformer_n may_v not_o be_v question_v by_o our_o opponent_n any_o more_o until_o they_o leave_v their_o principle_n since_o it_o be_v confirm_v by_o god_n and_o the_o
