foresay_a dignity_n etc._n etc._n touch_v the_o coherence_n of_o these_o word_n with_o the_o former_a it_o be_v this_o in_o the_o 28._o verse_n of_o the_o former_a chapter_n the_o apostle_n have_v exhort_v these_o christian_n to_o who_o he_o write_v unto_o constancy_n say_v and_o now_o little_a child_n abide_v in_o he_o meaning_n christ_n this_o exhortation_n he_o have_v confirm_v by_o a_o wicked_a a_o thing_n much_o condemn_v as_o we_o have_v hear_v but_o to_o repress_v the_o pride_n of_o the_o wicked_a in_o disdain_v the_o company_n of_o the_o godly_a at_o least_o all_o marriage_n think_v themselves_o the_o only_a happy_a man_n of_o the_o world_n but_o alas_o how_o they_o be_v deceive_v may_v appear_v by_o the_o premise_n not_o only_o be_v the_o poor_a the_o mean_a the_o weak_a and_o the_o sick_a the_o base_a the_o most_o destitute_a and_o forlorn_a child_n of_o god_n destitute_a i_o mean_v of_o all_o worldly_a help_n and_o comfort_n in_o far_o better_a state_n than_o the_o great_a monarch_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v not_o by_o regeneration_n the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o such_o a_o unregenerate_v man_n be_v also_o in_o far_o worse_a state_n and_o condition_n first_o therefore_o for_o die_a more_o and_o more_o unto_o sin_n or_o for_o the_o die_a more_o and_o more_o of_o sin_n in_o we_o this_o phrase_n may_v seem_v somewhat_o harsh_a &_o strange_a because_o in_o natural_a thing_n that_o that_o be_v once_o dead_a indeed_o can_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o die_v any_o more_o there_o can_v be_v a_o continual_a die_a or_o a_o die_n by_o piecemeal_n but_o where_o there_o be_v a_o remnant_n of_o life_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o even_o in_o natural_a thing_n that_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v kill_v that_o receive_v such_o a_o deadly_a wound_n that_o from_o the_o day_n of_o receive_v thereof_o it_o never_o thrive_v or_o joy_v as_o we_o speak_v but_o pine_v &_o waste_v away_o every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o till_o it_o perish_v so_o both_o man_n and_o also_o unreasonable_a creature_n upon_o some_o wound_n give_v they_o by_o other_o creature_n or_o take_v by_o their_o own_o untuline_n do_v many_o time_n consume_v unto_o but_o have_v their_o heart_n set_v upon_o better_a even_o upon_o thing_n that_o be_v above_o where_o christ_n jesus_n sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n colos_n 3._o 1._o and_o be_v also_o in_o that_o respect_n oft_o time_n very_o shiftless_a for_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n they_o get_v but_o a_o little_a and_o be_v content_a with_o a_o little_a so_o that_o they_o have_v enough_o for_o present_a necessity_n and_o so_o that_o they_o grow_v rich_a in_o heavenly_a blessing_n again_o the_o great_a blessing_n of_o god_n for_o this_o life_n bestow_v upon_o the_o wicked_a be_v but_o as_o great_a pasture_n knee_n deep_a for_o ox_n fat_v for_o the_o slaughter_n furthermore_o all_o the_o right_a of_o the_o blessing_n of_o this_o life_n be_v only_o in_o the_o child_n of_o god_n especial_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o from_o god_n whatsoever_o the_o wicked_a do_v possess_v yet_o be_v they_o never_o the_o rich_a thereby_o nay_o their_o state_n be_v the_o worse_o not_o only_o because_o be_v once_o know_v that_o they_o be_v worth_a nothing_o but_o that_o they_o owe_v ten_o time_n more_o than_o all_o that_o they_o have_v will_v discharge_v every_o man_n than_o come_v upon_o they_o wicked_a as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o child_n of_o god_n or_o special_a either_o to_o the_o wicked_a alone_o or_o to_o the_o godly_a alone_o touch_v common_a use_n this_o doctrine_n first_o of_o all_o serve_v to_o correct_v the_o base_a opinion_n that_o most_o man_n have_v conceive_v of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o to_o teach_v we_o to_o think_v and_o esteem_v of_o they_o according_a to_o those_o thing_n before_o speak_v all_o man_n for_o the_o most_o part_n regard_v man_n more_o according_a to_o their_o state_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v according_a to_o their_o riches_n to_o their_o honour_n and_o credit_n with_o great_a man_n in_o the_o world_n to_o their_o power_n and_o authority_n for_o do_v of_o worldly_a matter_n all_o man_n i_o say_v for_o the_o most_o part_n do_v more_o regard_v man_n according_a to_o these_o thing_n then_o according_a to_o their_o adoption_n according_a to_o their_o grace_n whereby_o they_o show_v forth_o their_o adoption_n and_o according_a to_o that_o estimation_n in_o which_o the_o say_a grace_n accompany_v adoption_n do_v declare_v they_o to_o be_v with_o god_n himself_o neither_o be_v this_o the_o fault_n only_o of_o natural_a man_n such_o as_o be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n themselves_o but_o even_o sometime_o of_o they_o that_o be_v themselves_o regenerate_v and_o seal_v with_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n even_o they_o i_o say_v do_v not_o so_o regard_v one_o another_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v in_o respect_n of_o their_o adoption_n yea_o the_o child_n of_o god_n do_v often_o time_n think_v the_o more_o base_o their_o state_n and_o condition_n be_v and_o how_o god_n have_v most_o high_o dignify_v and_o advance_v they_o why_o shall_v they_o not_o be_v so_o regard_v of_o other_o why_o shall_v they_o not_o so_o esteem_v of_o themselves_o not_o any_o whit_n to_o puff_n themselves_o up_o and_o to_o make_v themselves_o to_o set_v up_o their_o bristle_n as_o it_o be_v with_o contempt_n against_o any_o other_o but_o rather_o to_o comfort_v themselves_o the_o more_o against_o such_o contempt_n disgrace_n and_o indignity_n as_o they_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o other_o this_o use_n the_o apostle_n james_n commend_v when_o he_o exhort_v not_o to_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o respect_n of_o person_n or_o to_o esteem_v of_o man_n according_a to_o their_o ccstly_a apparel_n or_o outward_a countenance_n which_o they_o do_v bear_v in_o the_o world_n but_o according_a to_o their_o riches_n of_o faith_n and_o according_a to_o their_o in_o heritance_n in_o the_o kingdom_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o they_o that_o love_v he_o james_n 2._o 1._o etc._n etc._n under_o this_o opinion_n i_o comprehend_v also_o love_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o honour_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n agreeable_a to_o the_o say_a opinion_n for_o so_o much_o james_n signify_v in_o the_o placâ—_n before_o allege_v by_o have_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n inrespect_n of_o person_n which_o appear_v plain_o by_o his_o word_n immediate_o follow_v viz._n for_o if_o there_o come_v into_o your_o company_n say_v he_o a_o man_n with_o a_o gold_n ring_n and_o in_o good_a apparel_n and_o there_o come_v in_o also_o a_o poor_a man_n in_o vile_a raiment_n and_o you_o have_v respect_n unto_o â—im_n that_o wear_v gay_a clothing_n and_o you_o say_v unto_o he_o sit_v thou_o here_o in_o a_o good_a place_n and_o sâ—y_o unto_o the_o poor_a stand_v thou_o here_o or_o sit_v here_o under_o my_o footstool_n these_o word_n i_o say_v of_o the_o apostle_n only_o among_o profane_a man_n that_o contemn_v all_o goodness_n nor_o among_o papist_n and_o profess_a atheist_n but_o also_o among_o professor_n themselves_o even_o of_o the_o best_a sort_n viz._n too_o much_o to_o esteem_v the_o gay_a man_n of_o the_o world_n and_o such_o as_o be_v gentleman_n bear_v and_o have_v good_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o wicked_a and_o ungodly_a and_o despiser_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o too_o base_o to_o esteem_v and_o too_o little_a to_o regard_v the_o most_o apparent_a child_n of_o god_n know_v to_o be_v virtuous_a and_o show_v many_o token_n that_o they_o be_v turn_v from_o darkness_n to_o light_n and_o from_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n unto_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o inheritance_n among_o they_o which_o be_v sanctify_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n act_v 26._o 18._o who_o a_o king_n will_v honour_v all_o his_o subject_n also_o honour_n much_o more_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v hear_v of_o the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o prayer_n of_o god_n child_n as_o well_o for_o the_o wicked_a sometime_o as_o for_o the_o godly_a and_o chap._n 28._o where_o we_o entreat_v of_o the_o manifold_a benefit_n that_o other_o do_v enjoy_v by_o god_n child_n and_o final_o in_o the_o last_o before_o of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o they_o that_o do_v show_v any_o kindness_n to_o his_o child_n it_o shall_v not_o therefore_o be_v needful_a to_o enlarge_v this_o use_n with_o any_o other_o argument_n in_o this_o place_n let_v this_o only_o be_v add_v that_o if_o man_n be_v persuade_v indeed_o of_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o of_o that_o gain_n that_o be_v in_o show_v any_o kindness_n unto_o they_o they_o will_v strive_fw-mi who_o shall_v show_v most_o
