all_o generation_n however_o the_o drift_n of_o the_o psalmist_n in_o these_o word_n be_v to_o imply_v his_o confidence_n that_o god_n will_v not_o cast_v off_o his_o people_n for_o ever_o verse_n 2._o for_o i_o have_v say_v mercy_n shall_v be_v build_v up_o for_o ever_o etc._n etc._n that_o be_v i_o have_v conclude_v on_o this_o within_o myself_o that_o however_o thing_n go_v and_o though_o my_o servant_n that_o be_v i_o have_v make_v a_o sure_a and_o irrevocable_a covenant_n with_o he_o to_o wit_n concern_v the_o stability_n of_o his_o seed_n and_o throne_n for_o which_o see_v the_o angel_n only_o but_o also_o the_o holy_a servant_n of_o god_n in_o this_o world_n man_n of_o heavenly_a mind_n and_o conversation_n who_o shall_v praise_v god_n upon_o earth_n as_o the_o angel_n do_v in_o heaven_n and_o some_o also_o understand_v the_o whole_a verse_n of_o the_o visible_a heaven_n as_o a_o place_n parallel_n with_o that_o psal_n 19.1_o for_o which_o see_v the_o note_n there_o adversary_n can_v bring_v upon_o we_o but_o also_o from_o the_o stroke_n of_o invisible_a spirit_n which_o can_v be_v avoid_v but_o now_o many_o expositor_n do_v understand_v both_o these_o clause_n of_o the_o pestilence_n hold_v that_o it_o be_v call_v the_o terror_n by_o night_n because_o it_o be_v a_o disease_n so_o full_a of_o terror_n especial_o in_o the_o night_n and_o the_o arrow_n that_o do_v here_o in_o this_o world_n than_o the_o meaning_n must_v be_v that_o when_o the_o righteous_a shall_v see_v judgement_n thus_o execute_v upon_o wicked_a man_n they_o shall_v the_o more_o cheerful_o follow_v after_o god_n favour_n in_o a_o way_n of_o righteousness_n though_o for_o a_o time_n they_o suffer_v therein_o as_o see_v that_o in_o the_o conclusion_n god_n will_v not_o fail_v these_o word_n that_o i_o may_v live_v he_o desire_v of_o god_n the_o spiritual_a life_n of_o grace_n or_o that_o he_o may_v live_v cheerful_o &_o comfortable_o as_o be_v assure_v of_o god_n favour_n which_o be_v indeed_o only_o worthy_a the_o name_n of_o live_v verse_n 18._o open_v thou_o my_o eye_n that_o i_o may_v behold_v wondrous_a thing_n out_o of_o thy_o law_n this_o may_v be_v mean_v of_o type_n &_o shadow_n in_o those_o time_n of_o the_o law_n verse_n 19_o i_o be_o a_o stranger_n in_o the_o earth_n etc._n etc._n see_v the_o note_n gen._n 47.9_o this_o be_v lay_v down_o as_o the_o we_o shall_v conceive_v that_o in_o the_o first_o clause_n the_o word_n be_v be_v to_o be_v understand_v as_o some_o translate_v it_o the_o preparation_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v in_o man_n but_o the_o answer_n of_o the_o tongue_n be_v from_o the_o lord_n the_o meaning_n can_v be_v no_o more_o but_o this_o that_o when_o man_n have_v meditate_a in_o their_o heart_n both_o what_o they_o will_v speak_v &_o how_o and_o in_o what_o order_n they_o will_v speak_v it_o and_o so_o there_o be_v in_o their_o mind_n whole_a army_n as_o it_o be_v of_o thought_n marshal_v in_o order_n as_o in_o battle-array_n which_o the_o hebrew_n word_n that_o we_o translate_v preparation_n or_o disposing_n do_v clear_o signify_v yet_o shall_v they_o for_o all_o this_o be_v no_o far_o able_a to_o express_v themselves_o then_o as_o god_n shall_v enable_v they_o &_o give_v they_o utterance_n nor_o shall_v they_o always_o speak_v what_o they_o purpose_v but_o what_o god_n shall_v cause_v they_o to_o speak_v a_o multitude_n of_o thought_n they_o may_v have_v in_o their_o mind_n but_o without_o god_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o utter_v a_o word_n verse_n 2._o all_o the_o way_n of_o a_o man_n be_v clean_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n etc._n etc._n see_v the_o note_n chap._n 14.12_o but_o the_o lord_n weigh_v the_o spirit_n that_o be_v he_o do_v exact_o know_v &_o observe_v the_o soul_n &_o heart_n of_o man_n what_o their_o intention_n the_o affection_n and_o disposition_n of_o their_o mind_n be_v whether_o their_o heart_n be_v purge_v by_o faith_n or_o no_o whether_o they_o be_v pure_a and_o sincere_a or_o profane_a and_o hypocritical_a and_o so_o he_o discover_v how_o vain_o they_o deceive_v themselves_o and_o so_o condemn_v that_o which_o to_o they_o seem_v right_a verse_n 3._o commit_v thy_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n etc._n etc._n to_o wit_n by_o take_v direction_n from_o his_o word_n &_o aim_v in_o all_o thing_n at_o his_o glory_n but_o see_v the_o note_n psal_n 37.5_o and_o 55.22_o and_o thy_o thought_n shall_v be_v establish_v that_o be_v thou_o shall_v enjoy_v a_o sweet_a settlement_n &_o tranquillity_n in_o thy_o thought_n and_o spirit_n or_o thy_o purpose_n &_o the_o second_o clause_n and_o by_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n man_n depart_v from_o evil_n that_o be_v they_o avoid_v it_o or_o abandon_v it_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v the_o drift_n of_o that_o must_v be_v to_o show_v either_o that_o when_o god_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o truth_n do_v acquit_v man_n from_o their_o sin_n it_o be_v upon_o condition_n that_o they_o return_v not_o to_o those_o sin_n again_o but_o that_o thenceforth_o they_o shall_v fear_v god_n and_o serve_v he_o in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life_n or_o else_o that_o as_o mercy_n and_o truth_n do_v clear_v we_o from_o sin_n already_o commit_v so_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n preserve_v we_o from_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v verse_n 7._o when_o a_o man_n way_n please_v the_o lord_n he_o make_v his_o very_a enemy_n to_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o he_o to_o wit_n by_o over_o rule_v their_o heart_n so_o that_o though_o they_o hate_v he_o yet_o they_o shall_v not_o seek_v to_o hurt_v he_o or_o by_o incline_v their_o heart_n to_o love_v he_o and_o to_o do_v he_o good_a or_o else_o by_o bring_v thing_n on_o either_o side_n to_o that_o pass_n that_o man_n heart_n devise_v his_o way_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v whether_o he_o will_v go_v or_o what_o he_o will_v do_v but_o the_o lord_n direct_v his_o step_n that_o be_v he_o can_v take_v a_o step_n eager_o bend_v upon_o jollity_n and_o pleasure_n he_o do_v not_o restrain_v it_o from_o any_o delight_n that_o he_o may_v lawful_o take_v no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o by_o delay_v to_o satisfy_v its_o desire_n for_o my_o heart_n rejoice_v in_o all_o my_o labour_n that_o be_v he_o be_v real_o and_o inward_o delight_v and_o please_v with_o the_o work_n that_o with_o much_o labour_n he_o have_v cause_v to_o be_v make_v as_o indeed_o man_n do_v usual_o take_v most_o content_a in_o those_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v get_v by_o their_o own_o labour_n or_o which_o themselves_o have_v cause_v to_o be_v make_v and_o the_o rather_o because_o he_o be_v not_o hinder_v by_o war_n sickness_n or_o any_o other_o notable_a affliction_n or_o sorrow_n and_o this_o be_v my_o portion_n of_o all_o my_o labour_n that_o be_v the_o use_n of_o these_o thing_n or_o the_o delight_n i_o take_v in_o they_o i_o resolve_v be_v the_o only_a fruit_n i_o be_v to_o reap_v of_o my_o labour_n because_o when_o i_o come_v to_o die_v i_o be_v sure_a to_o leave_v they_o and_o according_o i_o set_v myself_o to_o enjoy_v they_o which_o many_o covetous_a wretch_n never_o do_v and_o thus_o a_o little_a transitory_a enjoyment_n of_o they_o be_v all_o the_o fruit_n i_o have_v of_o these_o painful_a pleasure_n that_o which_o solomon_n say_v here_o of_o his_o not_o deny_v himself_o any_o pleasure_n he_o desire_v some_o understand_v of_o his_o sinful_a excess_n beyond_o his_o first_o intention_n but_o this_o do_v not_o agree_v with_o that_o which_o he_o say_v in_o the_o forego_n verse_n that_o his_o wisdom_n remain_v with_o he_o verse_n 11._o then_o i_o look_v on_o all_o the_o work_n that_o my_o hand_n have_v wrought_v and_o on_o the_o labour_n that_o i_o have_v labour_v to_o do_v etc._n etc._n that_o all_o be_v vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n that_o be_v the_o pleasure_n that_o be_v take_v in_o the_o enjoy_n of_o they_o be_v not_o answerable_a to_o the_o toil_n that_o be_v undergo_v about_o they_o but_o all_o be_v mere_a vanity_n and_o vexation_n of_o spirit_n not_o only_o because_o the_o thing_n themselves_o wherein_o man_n take_v pleasure_n have_v no_o permanency_n in_o they_o but_o be_v vain_a in_o every_o regard_n see_v the_o note_n chap._n 1.2_o but_o also_o because_o such_o joy_n be_v not_o attain_v without_o much_o labour_n and_o anguish_n of_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o enjoy_n of_o they_o there_o be_v still_o a_o mixture_n of_o sorrow_n by_o reason_n of_o many_o fear_n jealousy_n interruption_n and_o discontentment_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o permanency_n in_o they_o even_a oâ—â—_n age_n itself_o will_v make_v the_o most_o delightful_a thing_n wearisome_a nor_o can_v they_o quiet_a or_o satisfy_v the_o mind_n of_o man_n yea_o and_o if_o there_o be_v sin_n in_o the_o enjoy_n they_o the_o sting_n of_o conscience_n will_v certain_o follow_v and_o there_o be_v no_o profit_n under_o the_o sun_n see_v the_o note_n chap._n 1.3_o verse_n 12._o and_o i_o turn_v myself_o to_o behold_v wisdom_n and_o madness_n and_o folly_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v have_v thus_o discover_v the_o vanity_n of_o pleasure_n i_o turn_v myself_o back_o to_o take_v a_o review_n of_o that_o wisdom_n and_o madness_n and_o folly_n whereinto_o i_o have_v before_o make_v enquiry_n see_v the_o note_n chap._n 1.17_o as_o determine_v upon_o this_o review_n yet_o once_o more_o to_o consider_v and_o see_v whether_o in_o this_o wisdom_n happiness_n may_v be_v attain_v or_o no_o and_o that_o because_o second_v thought_n be_v many_o time_n the_o wise_a and_o upon_o a_o serious_a review_n of_o thing_n man_n do_v often_o discover_v that_o which_o they_o see_v not_o before_o as_o for_o the_o follow_a word_n for_o what_o can_v the_o man_n do_v that_o come_v after_o the_o king_n even_o that_o which_o have_v be_v already_o do_v therein_o there_o be_v a_o reason_n give_v why_o solomon_n give_v over_o the_o pursuit_n of_o pleasure_n and_o betake_v himself_o again_o to_o make_v enquiry_n whether_o happiness_n may_v be_v attain_v by_o wisdom_n or_o no_o namely_o because_o he_o have_v make_v such_o a_o full_a and_o exact_a trial_n of_o all_o the_o good_a that_o can_v be_v find_v in_o pleasure_n that_o no_o man_n that_o shall_v after_o he_o attempt_n to_o search_v what_o content_n can_v be_v find_v in_o pleasure_n will_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o he_o have_v do_v in_o that_o time_n what_o can_v the_o man_n do_v that_o be_v any_o man_n whatsoever_o that_o come_v after_o the_o king_n the_o meaning_n be_v that_o whosoever_o shall_v try_v to_o find_v any_o more_o happiness_n in_o pleasure_n than_o solomon_n have_v do_v that_o be_v a_o king_n and_o so_o glorious_a a_o king_n in_o every_o regard_n he_o will_v but_o lose_v his_o labour_n he_o can_v try_v nothing_o but_o what_o solomon_n have_v try_v before_o he_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o but_o even_o that_o which_o have_v be_v already_o do_v to_o wit_n by_o he_o and_o other_o the_o last_o clause_n may_v be_v read_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o margin_n what_o can_v the_o man_n do_v that_o come_v after_o the_o king_n in_o those_o thing_n which_o have_v be_v already_o do_v but_o then_o also_o the_o sense_n be_v almost_o full_o the_o same_o to_o wit_n that_o when_o any_o man_n shall_v after_o solomon_n attempt_v to_o find_v happiness_n in_o pleasure_n as_o he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o but_o what_o have_v be_v do_v before_o he_o so_o neither_o will_v he_o be_v able_a in_o do_v over_o those_o thing_n which_o have_v be_v do_v before_o to_o
say_v she_o thy_o love_n be_v better_a than_o wine_n that_o be_v the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o thy_o love_n be_v more_o profitable_a and_o please_a more_o sweet_a and_o delightful_a than_o all_o earthly_a delicate_n and_o creature-comfort_n wine_n make_v glad_a the_o heart_n of_o man_n psal_n 104.15_o &_o eccles_n 10.19_o it_o make_v those_o that_o be_v of_o heavy_a heart_n to_o forget_v their_o affliction_n poverty_n and_o misery_n pro._n 31.6_o 7._o and_o that_o because_o it_o do_v increase_v warm_a and_o refine_v the_o vital_a spirit_n but_o now_o the_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n
