that_o sure_o such_o lewdness_n and_o careless_a kind_n of_o live_v can_v never_o befall_v the_o call_v of_o god_n that_o so_o long_o so_o lewd_o and_o so_o careless_o they_o shall_v pass_v away_o in_o thou_o that_o either_o thou_o have_v have_v some_o token_n of_o faith_n and_o of_o the_o effectual_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o apparent_a in_o thou_o or_o else_o thou_o have_v not_o have_v they_o at_o all_o tell_v i_o now_o do_v thou_o never_o find_v as_o yet_o any_o token_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o faith_n nor_o any_o sign_n of_o thy_o regeneration_n to_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o thou_o if_o not_o i_o say_v then_o that_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n to_o see_v the_o man_n of_o god_n that_o be_v as_o yet_o unregenerate_a to_o drench_v himself_o so_o deep_o in_o sin_n for_o until_o he_o feel_v these_o token_n in_o some_o part_n appear_v in_o he_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o in_o wicked_a and_o disorder_a course_n of_o life_n there_o be_v little_a or_o no_o difference_n at_o all_o to_o be_v find_v betwixt_o he_o and_o the_o reprobate_n and_o yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o also_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n calling_n be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o we_o so_o uncertain_a and_o unknown_a i_o affirm_v that_o all_o this_o notwithstanding_o a_o man_n may_v in_o time_n be_v call_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v not_o so_o desperate_o to_o judge_v of_o himself_o and_o again_o if_o it_o so_o be_v that_o thou_o have_v selt_z faith_n in_o her_o fruit_n more_o or_o less_o already_o work_v in_o thou_o and_o have_v perceive_v more_o and_o sometime_o less_o and_o as_o faith_n itself_o sometime_o grow_v to_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o feeble_a that_o it_o show_v not_o itself_o at_o all_o but_o seem_v to_o be_v as_o you_o will_v say_v even_o dead_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o hide_a life_n still_o remain_v in_o it_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o we_o read_v of_o diverse_a the_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o noah_n lot_n david_n peter_n and_o other_o who_o faith_n be_v sometime_o bring_v to_o so_o low_a a_o ebb_n and_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o sometime_o in_o they_o prevail_v so_o much_o and_o so_o mighty_o that_o if_o we_o respect_v their_o do_n for_o the_o time_n they_o seem_v to_o have_v little_a or_o no_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o as_o man_n no_o whit_n regenerate_v do_v give_v themselves_o over_o to_o commit_v of_o sin_n and_o those_o most_o odious_a and_o abominable_a and_o without_o any_o respect_n do_v show_v and_o behave_v themselves_o as_o man_n secure_a and_o careless_a for_o the_o time_n which_o time_n of_o their_o secure_a loose_a and_o sinful_a manner_n of_o life_n i_o may_v just_o call_v the_o time_n of_o god_n desertion_n for_o that_o he_o do_v as_o it_o be_v withdraw_v from_o they_o the_o lively_a and_o effectual_a work_n and_o operation_n of_o his_o spirit_n permit_v satan_n and_o the_o flesh_n for_o a_o time_n to_o have_v the_o sovereignty_n and_o dominion_n over_o they_o and_o for_o that_o the_o time_n also_o of_o this_o desertion_n as_o experience_n teach_v be_v not_o alike_o to_o all_o but_o in_o some_o be_v of_o short_a and_o in_o other_o of_o a_o long_a continuance_n as_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o wisdom_n shall_v appoint_v i_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o this_o say_a time_n of_o desertion_n may_v not_o be_v any_o cause_n so_o hardly_o to_o judge_v of_o the_o state_n of_o any_o now_o whereas_o this_o decrease_n in_o some_o be_v so_o small_a not_o some_o misdoubt_v themselves_o to_o their_o good_a and_o then_o much_o more_o to_o those_o that_o be_v member_n of_o the_o same_o body_n with_o we_o according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n do_v good_a unto_o all_o man_n but_o we_o take_v some_o pain_n to_o syft_n out_o and_o try_v also_o how_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n his_o faithful_a and_o elect_a child_n may_v discern_v and_o know_v that_o they_o have_v that_o testify_a spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereof_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 8.16_o that_o give_v that_o plain_a and_o evident_a testimony_n unto_o their_o spirit_n that_o they_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n for_o the_o wicked_a and_o reprobate_n in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o therefore_o it_o seem_v that_o the_o elect_n in_o this_o point_n may_v be_v easy_o deceive_v and_o mistake_v this_o their_o witness_n two_o thing_n here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o must_v take_v good_a heed_n of_o first_o that_o although_o the_o reprobate_n as_o i_o have_v say_v may_v god_n only_o and_o to_o none_o other_o for_o as_o many_o as_o be_v lead_v by_o this_o spirit_n 8.14.2_o rom._n 8.14.2_o they_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n second_o that_o we_o do_v not_o imagine_v this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n to_o be_v distinct_a in_o substance_n and_o essence_n from_o that_o whereof_o the_o wicked_a be_v partaker_n as_o though_o it_o have_v a_o diverse_a nature_n but_o fear_n and_o terror_n into_o any_o he_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v dinner_n sity_n of_o gift_n etc._n 1._o cor._n 12.8_o etc._n etc._n but_o the_o same_o spirit_n for_o to_o one_o be_v give_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o word_n of_o wisdom_n and_o to_o another_o the_o word_n of_o knowledge_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o be_v give_v faith_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o gift_n of_o heal_a by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o operation_n of_o great_a work_n and_o to_o another_o prophecy_n and_o to_o another_o the_o discern_a of_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n and_o to_o another_o the_o interpretation_n of_o tongue_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n work_v even_o the_o self_n same_o spirit_n distribute_v to_o every_o man_n several_o as_o he_o will_n so_o that_o in_o nature_n and_o essence_n it_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o distribution_n of_o all_o these_o gift_n both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o also_o reprobate_n although_o the_o person_n in_o who_o he_o work_v be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v find_v to_o be_v diverse_a see_v then_o that_o the_o case_n stand_v so_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o iniquity_n live_v in_o hypocrisy_n die_v in_o misery_n and_o damn_v for_o ever_o but_o why_o do_v i_o thus_o strive_v to_o open_v and_o unfold_v the_o greatness_n of_o these_o extremity_n for_o to_o heal_v up_o the_o most_o pestilent_a sore_n and_o to_o cure_v the_o most_o contagious_a and_o deadly_a wound_n of_o sin_n and_o withal_o look_v into_o themselves_o and_o find_v there_o a_o defect_n and_o want_n to_o receive_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o themselves_o be_v they_o never_o so_o sweet_a and_o precious_a because_o they_o have_v not_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o only_a hand_n to_o retain_v and_o hold_v they_o they_o be_v more_o distress_v and_o affright_v then_o if_o they_o never_o hear_v or_o think_v upon_o they_o insomuch_o that_o as_o satan_n be_v ready_a always_o to_o cast_v something_o in_o their_o way_n thereby_o to_o further_o they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o desperation_n so_o be_v they_o as_o ready_a so_o soon_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v offer_v to_o catch_v it_o and_o accept_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n and_o therefore_o never_o think_v of_o god_n order_n and_o course_n of_o call_v which_o be_v in_o some_o soon_o in_o some_o late_a and_o not_o alike_o in_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v not_o the_o present_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n within_o they_o and_o the_o pulse_n of_o faith_n to_o move_v and_o beat_v in_o their_o heart_n they_o stick_v not_o peremptory_o and_o without_o exception_n to_o conclude_v upon_o themselves_o say_v i_o have_v no_o faith_n i_o can_v believe_v and_o therefore_o i_o can_v be_v save_v my_o sin_n can_v be_v pardon_v i_o be_o but_o a_o reprobate_n and_o a_o damn_a castaway_n so_o that_o this_o motion_n be_v not_o only_o find_v in_o such_o as_o have_v a_o utter_a defect_n and_o want_n of_o faith_n but_o also_o oftentimes_o in_o those_o which_o have_v a_o faith_n who_o although_o as_o i_o have_v say_v they_o have_v a_o faith_n in_o deed_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o weak_a and_o a_o faint_a faith_n and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o for_o infirmity_n be_v not_o able_a to_o move_v and_o stir_v itself_o for_o as_o the_o man_n that_o be_v in_o a_o swoon_n swoon_n such_o who_o faith_n be_v weak_a compare_v to_o a_o man_n in_o a_o swoon_n or_o he_o who_o part_n be_v benumb_v with_o some_o extreme_a cold_a or_o sudden_a stroke_n though_o there_o be_v a_o life_n still_o remain_v in_o they_o yet_o such_o be_v their_o infirmity_n that_o they_o seem_v as_o dead_a and_o be_v unable_a to_o perform_v the_o function_n that_o belong_v unto_o a_o live_a body_n even_o so_o this_o faith_n though_o in_o truth_n it_o be_v a_o faith_n and_o have_v a_o life_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o benumb_a with_o the_o chill_a cold_a of_o sin_n and_o astonish_v with_o the_o stroke_n of_o our_o natural_a imperfection_n that_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v dead_a and_o utter_o void_a of_o vital_a motion_n so_o that_o sin_n unto_o this_o weak_a and_o waver_a soul_n be_v even_o as_o meat_n be_v oftentimes_o to_o he_o that_o surfete_v he_o eat_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o it_o yet_o when_o his_o stomach_n come_v to_o digest_v and_o work_v upon_o it_o the_o strength_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v the_o abundance_n of_o unconcoct_v humour_n the_o whole_a body_n be_v sick_a and_o weaken_a in_o every_o part_n and_o faculty_n so_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v glut_v and_o
and_o discern_v of_o we_o whether_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n or_o no_o until_o such_o time_n as_o it_o be_v so_o grow_v to_o a_o head_n and_o have_v take_v such_o root_n in_o we_o as_o that_o it_o begin_v open_o to_o show_v forth_o some_o undoubted_a fruit_n and_o effect_n thereof_o whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o distress_a conscience_n unacquainted_a with_o the_o several_a effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o with_o the_o nature_n thereof_o before_o it_o come_v unto_o full_a perfection_n stammer_v and_o stagger_v in_o doubt_n thereof_o as_o though_o he_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o wherefore_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a that_o we_o further_o consider_v of_o certain_a particular_n worthy_a observation_n in_o the_o course_n and_o order_n of_o man_n have_v sin_v and_o transgress_v against_o his_o law_n and_o by_o the_o other_o that_o be_v the_o gospel_n he_o be_v reveal_v unto_o we_o as_o a_o most_o love_a father_n full_a of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o thus_o far_o the_o elect_n and_o reprobate_n may_v go_v both_o together_o for_o the_o very_a castawaye_n have_v a_o kind_n of_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n of_o by_o diverse_a example_n in_o the_o scripture_n yea_o they_o know_v the_o gospel_n also_o how_o that_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n for_o a_o redemption_n for_o sin_n insomuch_o that_o oftentimes_o with_o the_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n of_o it_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v some_o joy_n though_o it_o be_v but_o momentany_a 13.20_o mat._n 13.20_o which_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n be_v call_v the_o receive_n of_o the_o word_n with_o joy_n 5._o heb._n 6.4_o 5._o and_o by_o the_o apostle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n the_o taste_n of_o the_o heavenly_a gift_n and_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v but_o herein_o they_o may_v very_o well_o be_v compare_v to_o a_o man_n that_o abound_v with_o melancholy_a who_o joy_v and_o delight_v himself_o in_o the_o very_a thought_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v unlikely_a and_o which_o he_o never_o look_v shall_v come_v to_o pass_v and_o so_o his_o joy_n vanish_v so_o these_o man_n in_o a_o bare_a conceit_n and_o a_o naked_a knowledge_n for_o the_o time_n do_v seem_v to_o joy_n and_o solace_v themselves_o in_o the_o word_n &_o promise_n of_o life_n which_o notwithstanding_o do_v not_o concern_v they_o and_o so_o their_o joy_n quick_o vanish_v and_o fall_v away_o as_o though_o it_o have_v never_o be_v after_o this_o knowledge_n in_o some_o measurable_a sort_n effect_v as_o shall_v be_v think_v in_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n convenient_a knowledge_n his_o application_n &_o use_n of_o his_o knowledge_n then_o grow_v the_o application_n and_o use_n of_o the_o same_o knowledge_n according_a to_o the_o two_o part_n thereof_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n first_o when_o a_o man_n find_v in_o the_o law_n the_o anger_n and_o curse_v of_o god_n against_o sin_n and_o confer_v the_o thing_n forbid_v in_o the_o law_n with_o his_o own_o life_n and_o action_n he_o conclude_v straightway_o either_o the_o safety_n or_o the_o danger_n of_o his_o own_o estate_n and_o this_o i_o may_v right_o term_v a_o legal_a conscience_n whereby_o through_o this_o examination_n so_o make_v of_o his_o action_n and_o assume_v the_o same_o either_o by_o affirmation_n or_o negation_n upon_o the_o general_a sentence_n of_o the_o law_n before_o discern_v a_o man_n in_o himself_o be_v either_o acquit_v or_o condemn_v in_o regard_n of_o his_o deed_n before_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o examination_n ensue_v also_o the_o prick_n of_o conscience_n conscience_n the_o prick_n of_o conscience_n which_o be_v a_o continual_a and_o fearful_a remembrance_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o their_o dangerous_a estate_n through_o sin_n trouble_v and_o disquiet_v the_o mind_n with_o often_o fear_v and_o horror_n of_o judgement_n and_o both_o these_o be_v find_v to_o be_v incident_a both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o reprobate_n though_o in_o both_o they_o be_v not_o accompany_v with_o the_o like_a effect_n and_o this_o prick_n and_o sting_v of_o conscience_n be_v the_o thing_n which_o disarmeth_z the_o weak_a christian_a that_o be_v not_o to_o the_o full_a renew_v of_o all_o hope_n and_o comfort_n while_o he_o be_v too_o much_o bend_v upon_o it_o and_o intentive_a in_o it_o and_o so_o much_o the_o more_o because_o that_o find_v this_o to_o be_v a_o thing_n whereby_o heeis_n assimilate_v and_o make_v so_o like_a unto_o one_o that_o be_v indeed_o a_o reprobate_n he_o be_v not_o able_a to_o find_v out_o the_o odds_n nor_o to_o make_v the_o difference_n that_o be_v betwixt_o they_o 3._o upon_o this_o application_n come_v a_o sorrow_n and_o fearful_a mourning_n for_o sin_n but_o not_o so_o much_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o nature_n and_o filthiness_n of_o the_o sin_n itself_o sin_n sorrow_n &_o mourning_n for_o sin_n that_o be_v commit_v or_o of_o that_o gracious_a god_n who_o majesty_n he_o have_v through_o sin_n so_o grievous_o offend_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o fearful_a curse_n and_o judgement_n which_o he_o that_o every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o conquer_v &_o subdue_v the_o despair_a thought_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o motion_n thereof_o and_o the_o comfortable_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n seem_v every_o day_n more_o than_o other_o to_o have_v a_o large_a and_o free_a passage_n in_o the_o chamber_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o testify_v unto_o they_o the_o grace_n of_o great_a and_o goodly_a estate_n whereas_o indeed_o his_o condition_n be_v none_o other_o but_o the_o very_a same_o still_a and_o all_o one_o with_o that_o it_o be_v before_o but_o of_o this_o in_o the_o end_n &_o with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n so_o his_o grace_n flow_v from_o this_o love_n be_v permanent_a for_o ever_o in_o his_o belove_a child_n and_o look_v what_o good_a work_n he_o have_v evident_o appear_v by_o the_o example_n of_o the_o church_n which_o be_v deprive_v for_o the_o tune_n of_o this_o inward_a joy_n of_o the_o presence_n and_o effectual_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o though_o christ_n be_v depart_v from_o she_o be_v say_v to_o rise_v out_o of_o her_o bed_n 3.2_o cant._n 3.2_o and_o to_o go_v about_o the_o city_n by_o the_o street_n and_o open_a place_n to_o seek_v choose_a vessel_n and_o a_o elect_a child_n of_o god_n be_v it_o likely_a think_v thou_o that_o he_o that_o be_v unregenerate_a and_o abide_v still_o in_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o take_v a_o pleasure_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o filthy_a lust_n thereof_o shall_v take_v such_o joy_n and_o solace_n in_o the_o spirit_n as_o that_o he_o can_v not_o tolerate_v or_o abide_v to_o have_v the_o same_o absent_a from_o he_o will_v he_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v because_o he_o withdraw_v himself_o from_o he_o or_o will_v he_o long_o after_o the_o spirit_n and_o wish_v and_o desire_v to_o find_v and_o feel_v it_o work_v within_o he_o i_o assure_v thou_o no_o these_o affection_n be_v not_o of_o the_o flesh_n but_o of_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o see_v how_o much_o thou_o be_v deceive_v that_o while_o the_o spirit_n work_v thus_o effectual_o within_o thy_o heart_n yet_o thou_o complain_v of_o the_o want_n thereof_o and_o say_v thou_o feel_v it_o not_o thou_o find_v it_o not_o and_o the_o reason_n whereby_o thou_o be_v lead_v to_o think_v and_o judge_v thus_o of_o thyself_o be_v because_o that_o thou_o be_v so_o intentive_a upon_o one_o only_a fruit_n forget_v that_o estate_n for_o hecreby_o oftentimes_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o while_o we_o too_o much_o gaze_v upon_o their_o perfection_n and_o then_o look_v down_o again_o upon_o our_o own_o infirmity_n we_o fall_v not_o only_o to_o a_o dislike_n but_o oftentimes_o to_o a_o marvelous_a distrust_n and_o despair_n of_o our_o own_o estate_n much_o like_a to_o he_o that_o gaze_v too_o much_o upon_o the_o sun_n have_v his_o eye_n dazzle_v with_o the_o brightness_n thereof_o that_o when_o he_o look_v down_o again_o upon_o the_o earth_n he_o hardly_o see_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o or_o at_o the_o least_o not_o so_o lively_a a_o resemblance_n as_o he_o do_v before_o in_o this_o point_n therefore_o we_o must_v remember_v first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o perfection_n but_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v require_v for_o if_o thy_o faith_n be_v true_a and_o unfeigned_a though_o it_o be_v in_o thy_o eye_n weak_a and_o feeble_a it_o be_v sufficient_a the_o hand_n and_o arm_n that_o be_v not_o dead_a indeed_o but_o only_o take_v with_o a_o shake_a palsy_n be_v able_a to_o receive_v a_o reward_n that_o shall_v be_v give_v as_o effeclual_o though_o not_o so_o steady_o as_o be_v the_o hand_n and_o arm_n be_v strong_a and_o sound_a without_o such_o imperfection_n so_o faith_n though_o faint_a and_o feeble_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o cumber_v with_o many_o doubt_a cogitation_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o shake_a palsy_n yet_o see_v it_o be_v not_o dead_a but_o lively_o assure_v thyself_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_a to_o receive_v at_o god_n hand_n the_o penny_n &_o reward_n of_o eternal_a which_o with_o many_o of_o they_o be_v full_a oft_o and_o every_o day_n answ_n whereunto_o may_v be_v answer_v 29.13_o esay_n 29.13_o that_o this_o be_v not_o to_o come_v and_o approach_v to_o god_n for_o though_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o draw_v near_o and_o honour_n god_n with_o their_o lip_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o away_o neither_o do_v their_o prayer_n howsoever_o they_o make_v a_o outward_a show_n proceed_v from_o any_o good_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o have_v a_o desire_n and_o longing_n to_o obtain_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o pray_v for_o but_o only_o be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o offence_n against_o god_n that_o be_v so_o gracious_a and_o so_o love_v a_o father_n this_o hatred_n be_v not_o to_o be_v number_v among_o the_o work_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o so_o prohibit_v and_o forbid_v unto_o man_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v just_o account_v among_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o give_v in_o charge_n &_o commandment_n unto_o man_n discern_v for_o that_o it_o follow_v immediate_o in_o the_o same_o verse_n that_o these_o thing_n of_o god_n know_v no_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n whereunto_o i_o answer_v that_o although_o we_o can_v judge_v and_o discern_v of_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n either_o concern_v his_o excellent_a nature_n or_o the_o mystery_n of_o his_o will_n in_o the_o way_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n what_o and_o how_o it_o shall_v be_v but_o by_o the_o spirit_n reveal_v and_o manifest_v the_o same_o in_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n yet_o the_o knowledge_n of_o these_o thing_n be_v have_v it_o hinder_v not_o but_o that_o by_o our_o own_o spirit_n we_o may_v judge_v the_o presence_n of_o those_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o which_o the_o spirit_n have_v thus_o general_o set_v down_o as_o thing_n necessary_a in_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n so_o then_o be_v by_o the_o word_n and_o out_o of_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n school_v and_o instruct_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o these_o gift_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o faith_n or_o other_o spiritual_a gift_n whatsoever_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o matter_n within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o own_o spirit_n be_v thus_o beforehand_o furnish_v and_o provide_v to_o judge_v and_o discern_v whether_o these_o thing_n be_v wrought_v and_o effect_v in_o we_o as_o yet_o or_o not_o which_o be_v sufficient_a for_o my_o purpose_n and_o all_o that_o i_o require_v if_o therefore_o thou_o will_v know_v if_o thou_o be_v unto_o we_o our_o adoption_n that_o we_o be_v single_v out_o from_o the_o world_n and_o by_o grace_n in_o christ_n adopt_v to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o this_o so_o full_o and_o effectual_o that_o it_o make_v we_o confident_o and_o bold_o to_o cry_v and_o call_v upon_o god_n by_o the_o name_n of_o father_n it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o promise_n because_o it_o seal_v unto_o our_o the_o earnest_a of_o our_o inheritance_n for_o that_o it_o be_v as_o a_o pledge_n and_o pawn_n unto_o we_o whereby_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o god_n will_v perfect_v and_o perform_v his_o covenant_n of_o life_n in_o christ_n that_o he_o have_v make_v and_o indent_v with_o we_o that_o be_v his_o faithful_a child_n although_o this_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v most_o true_a and_o in_o the_o due_a and_o appoint_a time_n of_o god_n 1.13_o ephes_n 1.13_o that_o be_v after_o that_o they_o do_v believe_v be_v certain_o find_v in_o all_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n ephes_n 1.13_o yet_o i_o think_v it_o not_o sufficient_a this_o to_o affirm_v but_o also_o more_o at_o large_a to_o show_v what_o this_o witness_n and_o this_o seal_n be_v in_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n that_o so_o every_o man_n may_v the_o better_o discern_v and_o judge_v of_o it_o in_o himself_o for_o though_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o earnest_a of_o our_o inheritance_n because_o that_o the_o spirit_n which_o thus_o in_o part_n work_v in_o we_o be_v a_o part_n of_o our_o glorification_n which_o be_v here_o in_o this_o life_n begin_v and_o that_o we_o be_v by_o this_o part_n as_o by_o a_o earnest_a penny_n assure_v that_o god_n in_o his_o time_n appoint_v will_v bring_v this_o work_n in_o we_o unto_o perfection_n for_o that_o he_o be_v faithful_a and_o just_a of_o his_o promise_n and_o cancel_v and_o deface_v in_o we_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n so_o that_o when_o the_o spirit_n be_v thus_o say_v to_o seal_v nothing_o else_o be_v mean_v thereby_o but_o that_o it_o do_v again_o instamp_n and_o engrave_v and_o set_v upon_o we_o even_o upon_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n that_o image_n of_o goodness_n purity_n holiness_n wisdom_n sanctity_n truth_n and_o
love_n that_o be_v of_o god_n for_o this_o be_v the_o very_a stamp_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o otherwise_o in_o other_o place_n be_v call_v our_o regeneration_n and_o this_o be_v the_o testimony_n and_o witness_n that_o it_o give_v wherefore_o that_o we_o may_v now_o the_o better_a see_v and_o understand_v how_o this_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o this_o sort_n do_v witness_v and_o give_v testimony_n with_o our_o spirit_n of_o nor_o adoption_n into_o the_o number_n and_o fellowship_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n i_o think_v it_o good_a that_o we_o proceed_v a_o little_a further_o in_o the_o apostle_n similitude_n this_o phrase_n and_o manner_n of_o speak_v be_v draw_v from_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n use_v for_o confirmation_n of_o contract_n and_o bargain_n make_v who_o have_v be_v only_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a unto_o the_o choose_a and_o elect_a of_o god_n they_o only_o be_v regenerate_v they_o only_o be_v in_o christ_n adopt_v and_o they_o and_o none_o but_o they_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o the_o resolution_n of_o this_o doubt_n let_v this_o suffice_v it_o come_v next_o to_o be_v consider_v of_o the_o true_a mark_n whereby_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v how_o the_o elect_n may_v know_v this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n to_o be_v in_o they_o and_o that_o witness_n and_o testimony_n that_o they_o feel_v in_o they_o to_o be_v the_o true_a testimony_n and_o witness_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n chap._n xxxiiii_o of_o the_o true_a mark_v whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v be_v know_v there_o need_v no_o long_a discourse_n concern_v these_o mark_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o doption_n nor_o how_o it_o may_v be_v know_v to_o be_v in_o we_o if_o we_o have_v once_o find_v our_o faith_n by_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n before_o show_v to_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n for_o this_o be_v to_o be_v hold_v for_o a_o maxim_n or_o principle_n in_o christian_a religion_n that_o none_o can_v have_v this_o true_a faith_n without_o the_o inward_a work_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n he_o be_v the_o giver_n and_o effecter_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o when_o thou_o have_v find_v thy_o faith_n to_o be_v such_o that_o be_v true_a and_o lively_a as_o i_o have_v say_v thou_o may_v safe_o assure_v thyself_o that_o thou_o have_v this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o thou_o be_v seal_v unto_o the_o day_n of_o redemption_n 30._o ephes_n 4_o 30._o and_o glorious_a manifestation_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n quest._n but_o here_o thou_o will_v object_v and_o say_v to_o what_o purpose_n be_v this_o the_o spirit_n have_v a_o testimony_n and_o witness_n also_o and_o see_v that_o hypocrite_n may_v flatter_v themselves_o in_o uncertain_a hope_n how_o shall_v i_o know_v whether_o the_o testimony_n in_o myself_o be_v from_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n or_o no_o answ_n thy_o question_n be_v well_o move_v and_o i_o will_v by_o the_o help_n and_o assistance_n of_o this_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v what_o i_o can_v to_o satisfy_v thou_o herein_o first_o thou_o must_v know_v that_o this_o spirit_n be_v find_v in_o thou_o by_o thy_o faith_n show_v itself_o so_o lively_a and_o effectual_a and_o withal_o if_o thou_o find_v any_o such_o witness_n of_o thy_o election_n as_o have_v be_v before_o rouch_v thou_o be_v then_o to_o assure_v thyself_o that_o it_o be_v the_o witness_n of_o none_o other_o but_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n for_o as_o this_o spirit_n have_v once_o take_v possession_n in_o we_o can_v be_v idle_a and_o unfruitful_a but_o be_v always_o work_v in_o some_o measure_n more_o or_o less_o so_o neither_o will_n satan_n seek_v by_o such_o godly_a motion_n to_o deceive_v those_o that_o be_v true_o regenerate_v as_o he_o do_v the_o hypocrite_n and_o reprobate_n but_o take_v a_o far_o contrary_a course_n that_o be_v as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v or_o that_o he_o can_v or_o may_v to_o rebate_v and_o lessen_v such_o good_a motion_n and_o to_o falsify_v this_o undoubted_a and_o certain_a witness_n in_o they_o because_o he_o see_v they_o to_o be_v truth_n in_o deed_n otherwise_o he_o shall_v rather_o confirm_v then_o hinder_v the_o saint_n of_o god_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n clean_o contrary_a and_o against_o his_o nature_n for_o he_o be_v a_o a_o liar_n and_o the_o father_n of_o lie_n 8.44_o joh._n 8.44_o and_o can_v abide_v to_o speak_v the_o truth_n except_o it_o be_v to_o his_o own_o advantage_n he_o be_v a_o common_a ancient_a and_o a_o profess_a enemy_n of_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_a of_o god_n always_o greedy_o seek_v and_o gape_v after_o their_o destruction_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v in_o mere_a compulsion_n and_o contrary_a to_o his_o intent_n and_o desire_n if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o be_v suppose_v to_o do_v any_o good_a now_o then_o when_o thou_o have_v find_v thy_o faith_n and_o thereby_o also_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o the_o witness_n that_o thou_o feel_v within_o thou_o witness_v unto_o thy_o soul_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v the_o witness_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n second_o thou_o may_v know_v and_o discern_v it_o if_o thou_o do_v but_o well_o consider_v and_o view_v it_o in_o itself_o as_o it_o be_v before_o describe_v where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o be_v that_o same_o print_n and_o impression_n from_o they_o in_o manner_n they_o be_v doubtless_o the_o true_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o himself_o also_o undoubted_o to_o be_v in_o the_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o god_n adopt_a child_n chap._n xxxvi_o of_o the_o second_o objection_n hitherto_o we_o have_v show_v how_o the_o man_n regenerate_v may_v be_v assure_v of_o his_o adoption_n now_o we_o be_v come_v to_o the_o other_o objection_n which_o be_v that_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o regenerate_a may_v fall_v again_o and_o therefore_o that_o all_o this_o which_o have_v be_v say_v be_v himself_o the_o author_n of_o all_o mischief_n &_o therefore_o very_o prejudicial_a unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o not_o in_o any_o hand_n to_o be_v of_o we_o receive_v or_o hearken_v unto_o yea_o which_o be_v more_o it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v very_o injurious_a even_o to_o all_o the_o person_n in_o the_o deity_n in_o that_o their_o eternal_a decree_n be_v thereby_o as_o far_o as_o satan_n upon_o the_o table_n of_o every_o faithful_a &_o christian_a soul_n that_o they_o that_o be_v once_o thorough_o and_o effectual_o call_v &_o regenerate_v can_v never_o fall_v away_o for_o ever_o but_o that_o god_n who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o this_o decree_n do_v never_o alter_v or_o change_v &_o therefore_o his_o decree_n &_o purpose_n can_v be_v alter_v or_o change_v if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o his_o counsel_n can_v be_v change_v in_o this_o point_n these_o inconvenience_n will_v then_o follow_v that_o either_o god_n can_v not_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v decree_v and_o determine_v or_o else_o that_o in_o continuance_n of_o time_n the_o same_o decree_n may_v be_v better_v &_o amend_v both_o which_o be_v far_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n either_o not_o to_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v his_o will_n or_o not_o to_o see_v even_o at_o first_o and_o before_o all_o time_n what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o own_o glory_n this_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o of_o all_o the_o faithful_a to_o be_v receive_v as_o a_o undoubted_a verity_n that_o as_o god_n have_v be_v most_o wise_a and_o prudent_a before_o all_o beginning_n in_o his_o counsel_n and_o decree_n so_o he_o be_v and_o shall_v continue_v most_o powerful_a even_o for_o all_o eternity_n in_o perform_v and_o effect_v of_o the_o same_o wherefore_o since_o the_o election_n of_o every_o one_o of_o god_n faithful_a child_n be_v a_o thing_n so_o certain_a and_o so_o immutable_a that_o it_o can_v never_o change_v and_o since_o it_o be_v also_o prove_v that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o elect_n in_o his_o due_a time_n may_v assure_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v elect_v it_o also_o follow_v of_o necessity_n that_o he_o may_v in_o like_a sort_n assure_v himself_o of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v no_o less_o because_o that_o otherwise_o he_o shall_v make_v god_n to_o be_v
