and_o corrupt_a interpretation_n who_o further_o add_v to_o his_o corrupt_a doctrine_n as_o follow_v bapt._n but_o as_o he_o be_v god_n without_o be_v man_n or_o the_o root_n and_o not_o the_o offspring_n he_o can_v not_o save_v man_n for_o god_n be_v the_o offend_v and_o man_n the_o offender_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o the_o offend_v to_o acquit_v and_o clear_v the_o guilty_a and_o to_o discharge_v the_o debt_n and_o to_o embrace_v the_o offender_n for_o no_o man_n out_o of_o christ_n can_v see_v god_n face_n and_o live_v answ._n here_o it_o appear_v what_o he_o mean_v by_o save_a man_n and_o clear_v the_o guilty_a only_o a_o pacify_v of_o god_n and_o a_o acquit_v man_n from_o the_o penalty_n as_o he_o imagine_v which_o as_o he_o say_v god_n can_v not_o do_v but_o something_o that_o be_v not_o god_n but_o the_o offspring_n of_o man_n as_o he_o say_v so_o by_o this_o he_o do_v not_o mean_a salvation_n to_o be_v a_o work_n wrought_v in_o man_n as_o a_o save_n and_o deliver_v from_o sin_n or_o the_o offence_n within_o but_o a_o satisfaction_n make_v to_o god_n that_o he_o may_v embrace_v the_o offender_n and_o yet_o he_o must_v be_v in_o christ_n that_o of_o god_n but_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o antichrist_n 1_o joh._n 4._o it_o be_v not_o jesus_n christ_n come_v in_o jesus_n christ._n thus_o you_o make_v yourselves_o ridiculous_a by_o carp_n at_o the_o truth_n and_o caval_v against_o christ_n light_n which_o the_o quaker_n own_o and_o as_o to_o our_o lay_v the_o stress_n of_o salvation_n upon_o our_o obedience_n to_o the_o light_n within_o as_o have_v not_o read_v scripture_n nor_o have_v the_o true_a god_n and_o christ_n preach_v to_o they_o rep._n but_o conscience_n do_v not_o act_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o they_o speak_v of_o rom._n 2.15_o neither_o do_v it_o act_v various_o when_o quicken_v so_o as_o to_o reprove_v evil_a as_o before_o how_o then_o do_v it_o act_v various_o in_o the_o heathen_a bapt._n answ._n p._n 17_o 18._o many_o there_o be_v that_o worship_n planet_n many_o there_o be_v among_o the_o heathen_n and_o other_o that_o make_v great_a conscience_n of_o adore_v that_o which_o they_o do_v attribute_v the_o title_n of_o a_o god_n to_o if_o a_o man_n in_o god_n worship_n never_o so_o much_o err_v if_o he_o be_v serious_a in_o it_o conscience_n be_v quiet_a but_o if_o there_o be_v a_o falter_v conscience_n reflect_v rep._n this_o be_v in_o those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o be_v deceive_v and_o captivate_v in_o their_o understanding_n and_o their_o mind_n corrupt_v from_o the_o true_a light_n in_o they_o that_o man_n be_v become_v a_o law_n to_o themselves_o in_o those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o be_v deceive_v and_o mislead_v which_o be_v as_o so_o many_o veil_n and_o mist_n and_o cloud_n cast_v over_o their_o understanding_n and_o so_o their_o conscience_n be_v defile_v though_o conscience_n simple_o consider_v whilst_o man_n mind_n be_v not_o bring_v under_o those_o cloud_n delusion_n and_o sorcery_n it_o be_v simple_o that_o computure_a of_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n that_o god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o spirit_n of_o man_n which_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o exercise_n and_o guidance_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n or_o spirit_n and_o as_o it_o reprove_v sin_n as_o confess_v before_o and_o bear_v witness_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n within_o which_o be_v light_n it_o do_v not_o act_v various_o as_o to_o prompt_v man_n in_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v sinful_a either_o in_o thing_n relate_v to_o man_n or_o worship_n it_o do_v not_o act_v nor_o lead_v in_o any_o idolatrous_a way_n or_o worship_n for_o that_o be_v sinful_a which_o they_o that_o be_v lead_v into_o it_o be_v common_o by_o man_n tradition_n that_o corrupt_v the_o simple_a that_o original_o flow_v from_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n and_o not_o by_o the_o light_n within_o as_o many_o be_v by_o corrupt_a doctrine_n and_o tradition_n pervert_v &_o draw_v from_o the_o light_n within_o and_o keep_v from_o look_v to_o it_o and_o so_o in_o a_o dark_a ignorant_a state_n and_o this_o be_v the_o tendency_n of_o your_o doctrine_n who_o be_v war_a against_o the_o light_n within_o as_o thou_o w._n burnet_n have_v do_v one_o while_o tell_v we_o there_o be_v not_o any_o light_n in_o those_o that_o be_v in_o the_o dark_a another_o while_n there_o be_v a_o convince_a light_n in_o every_o man_n which_o be_v one_o while_o conscience_n that_o so_o convince_v and_o reprove_v another_o while_n it_o be_v the_o light_n of_o nature_n another_o while_n the_o law_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o then_o its_o creation_n light_n another_o while_o it_o be_v the_o candle_n of_o the_o lord_n the_o spirit_n of_o the_o understanding_n another_o while_n it_o be_v the_o substance_n or_o body_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n pag._n 16_o 17._o alas_o poor_a ignorant_a and_o scornful_a contend_v how_o pitiful_o be_v thou_o put_v to_o it_o and_o how_o be_v with_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n and_o justice_n with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o have_v the_o counsel_n or_o law_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n that_o though_o he_o lose_v himself_o cause_n and_o not_o we_o nor_o our_o principle_n but_o rather_o confess_v to_o it_o after_o he_o have_v render_v we_o and_o it_o as_o odious_a as_o he_o can_v beside_o as_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o conscience-conviction_n conscience_n in_o that_o capacity_n will_v not_o allow_v a_o man_n in_o any_o evil_n and_o do_v not_o god_n leave_v ability_n in_o man_n to_o do_v good_a how_o then_o do_v he_o by_o his_o law_n in_o man_n require_v good_a to_o be_v do_v and_o how_o can_v he_o then_o condemn_v man_n for_o not_o obey_v he_o if_o he_o have_v not_o give_v he_o power_n to_o obey_v do_v he_o require_v impossibility_n and_o then_o condemn_v man_n for_o not_o answer_v his_o requiring_n no_o sure_a if_o he_o do_v it_o will_v render_v he_o a_o very_a hard_a master_n and_o what_o less_o have_v our_o opposer_n do_v but_o what_o say_v he_o further_o to_o the_o matter_n what_o capacity_n be_v fall_v man_n in_o as_o to_o light_v and_o knowledge_n within_o bapt._n every_o man_n by_o nature_n have_v the_o law_n place_v in_o his_o heart_n viz._n the_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o so_o much_o light_n and_o understanding_n leave_v in_o he_o as_o to_o know_v good_a and_o evil_n in_o some_o measure_n though_o they_o never_o have_v the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n yet_o have_v the_o substance_n of_o it_o god_n do_v expect_v a_o act_n according_o answ._n if_o god_n do_v expect_v a_o act_n according_a to_o his_o law_n which_o be_v in_o man_n viz._n the_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n then_o he_o expect_v man_n shall_v true_o love_v he_o and_o for_o that_o end_n he_o give_v ability_n or_o else_o he_o will_v not_o require_v it_o man_n be_v not_o condemn_v for_o that_o he_o have_v not_o afford_v he_o or_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o for_o he_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o bapt._n and_o then_o whereas_o w._n b._n speak_v of_o the_o body_n of_o this_o law_n or_o light_n in_o the_o heathen_a that_o they_o have_v a_o understanding_n there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o that_o worship_n be_v due_a to_o he_o though_o this_o god_n they_o know_v not_o nor_o how_o or_o in_o what_o form_n to_o worship_v he_o for_o that_o be_v reveal_v by_o the_o scripture_n he_o say_v p._n 17._o answ._n yet_o notwithstanding_o in_o contradiction_n to_o himself_o he_o have_v confess_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n to_o
be_v in_o their_o heart_n to_o which_o god_n expect_v obedience_n sure_o that_o which_o teach_v man_n to_o love_v the_o lord_n god_n with_o all_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n teach_v they_o the_o substance_n of_o true_a worship_n and_o the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v pure_a convert_v the_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v probable_a many_o that_o have_v a_o sense_n of_o this_o law_n of_o god_n within_o and_o his_o worship_n may_v not_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o these_o baptist_n nor_o come_v under_o their_o form_n of_o water-baptism_n which_o such_o a_o great_a stress_n they_o lie_v upon_o and_o yet_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n and_o save_v notwithstanding_o be_v baptize_v by_o the_o spirit_n bapt._n there_o be_v that_o light_n and_o understanding_n still_o leave_v in_o nature_n that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o there_o be_v worship_n due_a to_o he_o but_o the_o light_n in_o man_n leave_v he_o short_a of_o what_o the_o true_a god_n be_v and_o what_o worship_n be_v due_a to_o he_o answ._n the_o light_n that_o god_n have_v give_v in_o man_n do_v not_o only_o show_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o a_o worship_n due_a but_o also_o lead_v he_o to_o know_v the_o true_a god_n and_o his_o worship_n where_o it_o be_v obey_v as_o it_o do_v to_o those_o gentile_n speak_v of_o in_o rom._n 1.19_o 20_o 21._o when_o that_o which_o may_v be_v know_v of_o god_n be_v manifest_a in_o they_o which_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o discern_v the_o invisible_a thing_n of_o god_n even_o his_o eternal_a power_n and_o godhead_n from_o the_o visible_a creation_n so_o as_o they_o faith_n upon_o ans._n not_o uncertain_a to_o they_o that_o have_v try_v it_o and_o believe_v in_o it_o as_o christ_n exhort_v the_o spirit_n that_o god_n have_v give_v be_v certain_a the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o every_o man_n be_v certain_a the_o substance_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n within_o as_o be_v confess_v be_v certain_a conscience_n when_o act_v by_o the_o light_n and_o law_n of_o god_n within_o be_v not_o uncertain_a in_o its_o check_n against_o sin_n bapt._n for_o if_o that_o light_n that_o be_v in_o man_n be_v darkness_n or_o veil_v with_o gross_a erorr_v and_o so_o the_o soul_n run_v into_o strange_a enormity_n how_o sad_a will_v it_o be_v for_o that_o soul_n that_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o follow_v it_o this_o be_v the_o quaker_n principle_n not_o only_o to_o look_v for_o salvation_n from_o it_o but_o to_o be_v lead_v by_o it_o answ._n sure_o this_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a conclusion_n against_o the_o light_n within_o and_o very_o false_o for_o he_o have_v confound_v err_v conscience_n light_n and_o darkness_n together_o as_o not_o make_v a_o difference_n here_o in_o the_o end_n of_o his_o work_n for_o first_o a_o light_n that_o convince_v and_o reprove_v the_o wicked_a of_o sin_n be_v confess_v to_o be_v in_o they_o 2_o a_o knowledge_n of_o god_n leave_v in_o man_n 3_o the_o substance_n or_o body_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n 4thly_a conscience_n conviction_n which_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o ground_n of_o none_o of_o which_o can_v true_o be_v deem_v darkness_n though_o some_o put_v light_a for_o darkness_n and_o darkness_n for_o light_n as_o this_o our_o opposer_n have_v do_v also_o to_o tell_v of_o the_o light_n in_o man_n be_v darkness_n or_o veil_v with_o gross_a error_n be_v two_o different_a thing_n for_o the_o light_n be_v veil_v in_o some_o do_v not_o change_v it_o from_o be_v light_n in_o its_o own_o essence_n and_o now_o it_o will_v not_o be_v sad_a for_o that_o soul_n that_o give_v up_o himself_o to_o follow_v the_o light_n within_o which_o convince_v and_o reprove_v for_o sin_n and_o teach_v true_o to_o love_v the_o lord_n god_n and_o to_o do_v righteous_o &_o just_o before_o all_o man_n which_o answer_v and_o fulfil_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n which_o be_v confess_v to_o be_v within_o man_n even_o in_o the_o very_a heathen_a as_o in_o p._n 17._o so_o that_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o principle_n touch_v the_o light_n within_o be_v evident_o verify_v and_o prove_v both_o from_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n as_o also_o from_o our_o adversary_n own_o confession_n therefore_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o principle_n which_o depend_v upon_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v true_a the_o light_n of_o christ_n within_o be_v the_o fundamental_a or_o most_o bind_a as_o w.b._n have_v confess_v so_o the_o less_o need_n be_v say_v to_o his_o frivolous_a objection_n against_o we_o in_o other_o particular_n howbeit_o some_o thing_n may_v be_v observe_v touch_v several_a passage_n follow_v bapt._n those_o that_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n to_o lead_v they_o if_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o rule_n what_o rule_n have_v they_o answ._n without_o the_o guidance_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o right_a use_n and_o end_n of_o the_o scripture_n can_v be_v know_v they_o be_v as_o a_o book_n seal_v only_o by_o the_o spirit_n true_o open_v as_o to_o their_o not_o have_v the_o spirit_n to_o lead_v they_o that_o be_v but_o a_o beg_a the_o question_n and_o contradict_v much_o of_o what_o he_o have_v say_v before_o for_o how_o be_v any_o say_v not_o to_o have_v it_o but_o in_o that_o they_o walk_v not_o in_o its_o way_n nor_o follow_v its_o leading_n but_o rebel_n against_o the_o spirit_n grieve_v and_o vex_v the_o holy_a spirit_n such_o be_v not_o without_o it_o as_o to_o its_o conviction_n and_o reproof_n though_o not_o have_v it_o as_o to_o the_o true_a sense_n and_o apprehension_n of_o it_o guidance_n life_n virtue_n and_o glory_n of_o its_o ministration_n they_o be_v in_o that_o which_o be_v sensual_a and_o devilish_a bapt._n god_n never_o design_v the_o spirit_n to_o be_v man_n rule_n but_o to_o be_v man_n assistant_n and_o helper_n to_o walk_v and_o build_v by_o the_o rule_n the_o scripture_n do_v direct_v he_o to_o his_o duty_n pag._n 19_o answ._n and_o be_v not_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o spirit_n according_a to_o the_o scripture_n do_v not_o god_n ever_o design_v the_o spirit_n to_o lead_v into_o all_o truth_n and_o if_o the_o spirit_n do_v principle_n a_o soul_n for_o his_o duty_n as_o this_o our_o opposer_n builder_n that_o have_v his_o judgement_n and_o skill_n principled_a within_o by_o what_o be_v the_o true_a believer_n so_o principled_a if_o not_o by_o the_o spirit_n or_o light_n of_o truth_n within_o be_v it_o not_o the_o spirit_n that_o do_v so_o principle_n a_o man_n for_o his_o work_n both_o in_o pray_v hear_v and_o obedience_n yea_o it_o be_v confess_v in_o the_o same_o page_n that_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n and_o do_v it_o follow_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v not_o a_o rule_n sufficient_a or_o that_o the_o light_n within_o must_v be_v exclude_v from_o try_v doctrine_n because_o the_o berean_o do_v search_v the_o scripture_n to_o see_v whether_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o whereas_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o all_o readiness_n of_o mind_n which_o imply_v that_o in_o the_o main_a they_o be_v satisfy_v in_o that_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o such_o readiness_n and_o they_o search_v the_o scripture_n which_o if_o in_o any_o particular_a thing_n this_o may_v be_v say_v to_o imply_v a_o doubt_n on_o their_o part_n their_o doubt_n can_v be_v any_o argument_n to_o detract_v from_o the_o spirit_n sufficiency_n both_o to_o inform_v satisfy_v and_o guide_v they_o into_o the_o truth_n declare_v of_o in_o the_o scripture_n so_o that_o to_o say_v it_o be_v by_o the_o scripture_n without_o and_o not_o by_o the_o light_n within_o this_o show_v great_a ignorance_n thus_o to_o exclude_v the_o light_n whereas_o he_o shall_v rather_o have_v say_v as_o his_o former_a word_n intimate_v that_o it_o be_v by_o the_o spirit_n or_o light_n within_o together_o with_o the_o scripture_n that_o

he_o prove_v his_o doctrine_n whole_o by_o the_o scripture_n without_o p._n 20._o answ._n if_o he_o be_v far_o from_o turn_v they_o to_o the_o light_n within_o this_o will_v make_v he_o oppose_v his_o own_o commission_n which_o be_v to_o turn_v man_n to_o the_o light_n within_o which_o his_o prove_v his_o doctrine_n by_o the_o scripture_n be_v no_o reason_n against_o for_o he_o be_v a_o minister_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o his_o ministry_n tend_v to_o bring_v to_o the_o spirit_n in_o reason_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n he_o reason_v for_o christ_n the_o light_n and_o in_o prove_v christ_n which_o he_o dare_v not_o deny_v the_o matter_n of_o and_o say_v it_o may_v be_v a_o good_a comparison_n so_o it_o appear_v he_o be_v present_o check_v and_o say_v he_o will_v not_o be_v find_v to_o carp_v at_o any_o thing_n that_o may_v agree_v with_o sound_a doctrine_n though_o he_o have_v carp_v at_o many_o thing_n that_o be_v sound_a and_o now_o do_v he_o not_o deserve_v to_o be_v try_v by_o his_o own_o rule_n and_o ask_v where_o he_o prove_v that_o he_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o shed_n of_o the_o blood_n that_o be_v let_v out_o by_o the_o spear_n in_o so_o many_o word_n and_o where_o in_o so_o many_o word_n that_o blood_n shed_v without_o the_o gat_n of_o jerusalem_n be_v the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n as_o in_o pag._n 28._o whereas_o if_o that_o be_v his_o justifier_n and_o saviour_n where_o be_v it_o it_o be_v not_o in_o be_v pag._n 40._o so_o then_o his_o saviour_n it_o appear_v be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v whereas_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o justify_v purge_v say_v christ_n die_v for_o all_o and_o taste_v death_n for_o every_o man_n he_o die_v but_o for_o all_o that_o he_o die_v for_o or_o for_o every_o man_n for_o who_o he_o taste_v death_n what_o gross_a absurdity_n and_o nonsense_n be_v this_o he_o have_v put_v upon_o plain_a scripture_n and_o how_o have_v he_o set_v himself_o and_o his_o meaning_n to_o be_v judge_n over_o the_o scripture_n when_o at_o other_o time_n he_o will_v make_v we_o believe_v the_o scripture_n be_v his_o best_a and_o most_o perfect_a rule_n but_o here_o deny_v the_o general_a extent_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n so_o plain_o and_o frequent_o own_v in_o scripture_n without_o any_o such_o restriction_n or_o exception_n as_o
